AN ARTISTIC RENAISSANCE HAS BEGUN Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center
A major artistic movement is transforming our community! Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment (PACE) is cultivating a robust cultural landscape with strategic art and cultural partners at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center and throughout Southwest Iowa. Centrally located in downtown Council Bluffs, the 95,000 square foot Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center combines historic renovation and new construction and is home to five arts and culture nonprofits: PACE, American Midwest Ballet, Chanticleer Community Theater, Kanesville Symphony Orchestra, and Kitchen Council. Together, we provide an impressive array of arts and programs for all to enjoy. PACE is a proud initiative of the Iowa West Foundation.
About Pace Pottawattamie Arts, Culture & Entertainment (PACE) is strengthening, developing and promoting arts, cultural and historical institutions and organizations, and activities in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County and throughout the region. Together, PACE and our Partners increase access to the arts, target new audiences, and share costs helping us all to better realize our missions. The following annual programming is available through PACE at low or no cost to the community: Chanticleer Community Theater / Chanticleer, managed by PACE, will have four theater productions with over 20 performances in the Polina & Bob Schlott Performing Arts Center. Kanesville Symphony Orchestra / KSO, managed by PACE, will host a three-concert series. Educational Programs / PACE will have over 50 classes and programs for youth, adults, and families, while collaborating with artists and nonprofits. Examples of classes include pottery, painting, photography, and culinary arts. Gallery Exhibitions / PACE will curate the nearly 8,500 square-foot Anne & John P. Nelson Exhibition and Gallery Floor, which includes separate gallery spaces for our Grant Wood murals, traveling exhibits, and local artists. Artist Studios / PACE helps subsidize five artist studios where artists are encouraged to interact with the community, create and participate in art exhibitions, and teach classes and workshops. Community Programs / PACE continues to host popular programs to activate community spaces, including the Music in the Park series. Public Art / PACE, in partnership with local artists, uses art to help to improve the image and identity of our community. PACE is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and depends on the support of sponsors that share our values to ensure the arts continue to thrive and be in service to the community.

Current gallery exhibits GRANT WOOD Iowa-born artist Grant Wood is most well known for his paintings of clandestine scenes of the American Midwest and his 1930 painting, American Gothic. In 1926, before he became nationally recognized, Wood painted three murals of Iowa landscapes for local hotel magnate Eugene Eppley. These murals were known as the Corn Murals. One of the murals lived inside the Chieftain Hotel in downtown Council Bluffs. Through the passion and hard work of local preservationists, pieces of the Chieftain Hotel’s mural were painstakingly salvaged. Now, large parts of the restored mural have a permanent home in the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center’s Richard & DeAnna Miller Grant Wood Gallery, making it the perfect place to bring Grant Wood’s story to life.
STORMS The smell of rain. The sound of rolling thunder. The flash of lightning. When mother nature activates her atmosphere, we all notice. Every summer in the Midwest, dramatic meteorology draws our eyes upwards. We confront a trinity of inspiration - science, nature, and art - that reminds us that storms constantly change, and storms constantly change us. Look, listen, touch. Explore the gallery and experience storms through the eyes and arms of our resident studio artists, Kent Hertz, Susan Woodford, Buck Christensen, Ann Brugenhemke, and Jeff Koterba, along with featured guest artists. Whether it’s altering the geography of our planet, or changing our emotional present, storms are an universal element in the human story.
ALBERT PALEY’S ODYSSEY In 2010, the Iowa West Foundation commissioned Albert Paley to create a “gateway into Iowa,” which would turn Council Bluffs’ S. 24th St. bridge over I-80 into a distinct landmark. The result was Odyssey, a set of four immense metal sculptures that are visually striking against the vast horizon. The dynamic structures contain symbolic tributes to a rich history of agriculture, including representations of pigs, combines, railways, and rural life. Portions built of corten steel intentionally weather to brown, representing the earth. Bronze GALLERY HOURS elements patina to green like the rolling fields. Finally, stainless Friday steel represents the skies – the clouds and the shining sun. 5PM - 8PM The evolution of Odyssey can be witnessed in these models, Saturday encountered in the intricate layers of abstract shapes that mirror the resilient spirit of the Great Plains and its people. 12PM - 4PM
