This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama follows troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois as she leaves small-town Mississippi and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski, and her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans. Blanche’s flirtatious Southernbelle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship, leading to even greater conflict in the Kowalski household.

The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is presented by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. on behalf of The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE by Tennessee Williams is a classic of the American Theater. The gritty reality of the script was unlike anything the theater-going public had yet experienced in 1947 and it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, hands down. Playwright Tennessee Williams had been catapulted to national renown in 1944 with his first play, THE GLASS MENAGERIE. It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, quite an accomplishment for a novice playwright. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is not only considered William’s most popular work, it is also one of the most critically acclaimed plays of the 20th Century. STREETCAR is a weighty assignment for any director to tackle. Over the years there have been countless productions, live on-stage and filmed, as well as a myriad number of interpretations. One aspect of the plot which audiences in 1947 would not have readily understood is the nature of Blanche’s mental state and how severely it affects her dealings with others. We now recognize PTSD as one of the disorders from which she suffers, given the stress of caring for ill and dying relatives with no physical or financial support. In addition, she is considered to be a person with Borderline Personality Disorder. BPD is characterized by pervasive unstable moods, difficult interpersonal relationships, and a poor self-image. BPD has been described as one of the most complicated and serious of mental problems. Many people with Borderline Personality Disorder experience anxiety, depression, or both. Typically, the fear of abandonment is a major component of the problem to such a degree that BPD sufferers are desperate and even panicky in their efforts to avoid desertion, which often leads to the very relationship loss they hope to avoid. In examining the traits that accompany Borderline Personality Disorder, Blanche appears to be a textbook case. Add to that the harsh treatment she receives from her brother-in-law (misogyny and physical abuse) and her downward spiral is inevitable.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR... continued As you can imagine, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE presents daunting casting challenges. Happily, for our production, Providence stepped in and provided a truly stellar group of actors. Each has worked tirelessly to bring to life these characters who hail from a bygone era and a completely unfamiliar milieu. Happily, we are also blessed with an enormously talented design team—from the incredibly accommodating Tech Director Joey Lorincz, to Sound Designer Mark Cramer, Lighting Designer Darren Golden and consummate Costumer, Dwayne Ibsen. Faithfully executing the illumination and sound needs of STREETCAR are Mike Jones and Brodie Smith. And Zack Salem, publicist, is responsible for all you are reading. I am deeply indebted to our brilliant stage manager, Beth Rutz who also serves on the Chanticleer Community Advisory Committee. She is a veteran of many children’s theater productions but took a chance with STREETCAR and we are, indeed, the fortunate ones. Likewise, I am beholden to cast members Brett Foster and Korbin Horton for their invaluable contributions to the production, above and beyond. Bob Putman, Theater Manager, has been instrumental in getting everything in place for this production—from the smallest details to some insurmountable requests, he has always “found a way” and we are grateful. I’d like to send out a special thank you to Chris Janicek from Cake Box for providing some amazing birthday cakes during these performances. Finally, I’d like to mention PACE and what a pleasure it is to work in such a gorgeous venue with so many comfortable appointments. All of us involved in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE hope you will enjoy the show. Sincerely, M. Michele Phillips, Director

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE cast bios SYDNEY READMAN | Blanche DuBois After 4 years of being away from the stage, Sydney is making her first appearance at Chanticleer Theater. Prior to the pandemic, Sydney was pursuing her love of acting in Los Angeles, where she made small appearances on Last Man Standing, Veronica Mars, Euphoria, and more (but don’t blink or you’ll miss her!). Prior to LA, some of her favorite productions she participated in, in the Omaha area, were Shakespeare in Love as Lord Wessex (OCP), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as Hallie Jackson (OCP), Bad Jews as Melody (Bluebarn), and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui as Dockdaisy (Bluebarn). CHELSEY WALKER | Stella DuBois No stranger to the stage, Chelsey has been in over 30 productions. Some of her favorite roles she has played include Nancy in Oliver! The Musical and Marian Paroo in The Music Man. Since moving to Omaha from the Chicago suburbs, she is slowly working her way into the local theatre communities, and is looking forward to even more opportunities. Chelsey is very excited to be making her debut on the Chanticleer stage!

KIARA SCOTT | Eunice Hubbell A Streetcar Named Desire is Ms. Scott’s first on-stage appearance. A working mother of two, Kiara is also an aspiring voice actress/ model. Born in Kansas, she migrated to Nebraska, where she confined her professional engagements to voice overs, singing and modeling gigs. Her broadcast assignments include Doctor Who: The Audio Adventures with Taylor’D Vision Productions. She is excited to be working at Chanticleer’s beautiful new home at PACE.

STAN TRACEY | Steve Hubbell Stan is happy to be back at Chanticleer, where he previously appeared in Witness For The Prosecution and All My Sons. He has also been in shows produced by the Florentine Players, Brigit Saint Brigit Theatre Company, Circle Theatre as well as a staged reading at the Omaha Community Playhouse. A lawyer by profession, Stan has a wonderful wife, five outstanding children and a fantastic daughter-in-law. I thank all of them and especially my wife for tolerating and encouraging my forays into acting. Stan assures you that he is nothing like Steve Hubbell! Thank you for supporting live theater. BRETT FOSTER | Harold “Mitch” Mitchell Brett has recently returned to Omaha from NYC. He was last seen in The Lazerous Syndrome as Elliot for SNAP. During his first run in the metro, he was the recipient of TAG, SNAP and OCP awards. Some of his favorite roles have included Eddie Evens in Terra Nova, Tom Jones in Tom Jones, the twins in Love! Valour! Compassion!; Richard in Lion In Winter and Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Show. But Noises Off (as Gary) will forever be his gold standard. Brett is the owner of WOWFACTORE, a three-pronged business that provides event planning, visual merchandising and interior design services. He is grateful to husband Eric for his love and support. ISAAC REILLY | Stanley Kowalski Isaac Reilly’s past roles include Villager/Bottle Dancer in Fiddler on the Roof (OCP-2010), Ty in Sordid Lives (SNAP!2010), Young Collector in A Streetcar Named Desire (OCP2012), Chad/Aaron/Pool Boy in Legally Blonde (OCP-2012), Clifford in Deathtrap (OCP-2013), Stone in City of Angels (OCP2016), Bert Barricune in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (OCP-2017), Jesus Lizard in Beastiary (Firebelly-2017), Jonathan Harker in Dracula (Circle Theatre-2018), Marchand in Incident at Vichy (BSB-2019), and Leon Czolgosz in Assassins (BSB-2019). You can also see him in the upcoming Brigit St. Brigit production of God on Trial. This is his first show with Chanticleer Theatre.

KORBIN HORTON | Collector / Orderly My name is Korbin Horton. I am a junior at Treynor High School. I have performed in several high school plays with my favorite being Once Upon a Mattress. This is my second performance with Chanticleer. I enjoy participating in group and individual speech competitions. I perform in musical theater, one act, and storytelling categories. After high school, I hope to continue pursuing acting in LA. KEENAN REILLY | Pablo Keenan is excited to make his Chanticleer stage debut! His love of theatrics and the stage stemmed from his 7th grade rendition of The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz (St. Vincent DePaul). He went on to play Evelyn Oakly in Duchesne Academy’s production of Anything Goes, and Sparrow/Monkey in the cult/Steve in Beastiary with Firebelly Rep. After high school, he explored other passions such as martial arts, French, History, and visual art, until he was recruited to be the Voice of BravO! National Dance and Talent Competition. He then spent 3 years cheerfully welcoming thousands of dancers to the BravO! stage. After being away from acting for so long, he is thrilled to break the hiatus and once again share the stage with his brother Isaac. PATRICK BRESNAHAN | Doctor Patrick is honored to be in the cast of the Chanticleer Theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Past stage experience includes the Florentine Players’ One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Hint! (Captain Heinz), Circle Theatre’s Do Not Go Gentle (Windsor) and The Hobbit (Bombur).
