Letter From the Director Welcome to the reboot of THE MUSIC MAN. This production actually opened March 13, 2020 and closed the following day due to the virus. Bringing it back has certainly had it’s interesting moments, but with such a solid story and script, those moments were minimal. So many of the young people grew about a foot so costumes didn’t fit, and a couple of cast members were not available to finish our trip to the heart of Iowa. Opening the new Chanticleer with this work was really wonderful. The rich Iowa landscapes and simple values instilled by Meredith Willson made the show a “must” for opening a new Art Center. Not only did he compose the score but he wrote the script as a memory of his home state. Quite an accomplishment. I need to thank so many people for their help in bringing THE MUSIC MAN back to the stage: Robin Putnam and Patti Zukaitis for their choreography, Beth Rutz for Stage Managing, Darrin Golden for light design, Cheri Sanwick for costume revisions, Kris Rutz for Sound Design, Bob Putman for his set design, Jerry Gray for his great musical direction, the dedicated cast and crew and Bob and Denise Putman for their help and friendship. All of these people went beyond the call of duty for this remount. Congratulations to them and to you for venturing out to River City tonight. You are appreciated!!!! Dwayne Ibsen, Director

Synopsis By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson’s six-time, Tony Awardwinning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation. The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Perfect for professional theatres, community groups, summer stock and schools alike, this award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution, thanks to is quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads, which have become popular standards. The cast features a soaring soprano ingenue, parts for young performers and children, and one of the musical theatre’s treasures, a tour de force leading role for a charismatic actor who doesn’t need to be a trained singer.
