Engineering in Materials Science & Product Design
Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science & Product Design is a 3½-year bachelor of engineering education thought in English. The programme prepares the students to analyse materials and evaluate choice of materials in terms of their quality and from a business perspective. Choice of materials plays an important role when new products are developed. The programme focuses on both the product development and the manufacturing process of the material and the interaction between the two areas. Simultaneously, the student learns to lead and manage processes and projects that will ensure optimisation of the development of materials and products as well as optimisation of the design process.
Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science & Product Design focuses on materials for the textile, clothing and furniture industries.
From the 4th semester the students specialise in one of the following profiles:
- Textile profile is aimed at the textile and clothing industries, and the students gain theoretical knowledge of textile materials and technological developments in textile materials.
The students learn to analyse and assess the materials’ properties, their quality and their possible use. - Furniture profile is aimed at the furniture industry, and the students gain a theoretical knowledge of materials that are used for furniture manufacturing, such as wood, metal, plastic, glass and composites as well as furniture materials of the future. The students acquire knowledge of the processing methods that can be used on different materials. The 5th semester of the bachelor consists of a 6-month work placement that can take place either in Denmark or abroad.
The following list provides examples on work tasks, which a Materials Science & Product Design student would be able to help solve during the work placement period:
- Participate in project work - Analyse materials - Test materials and document tests - Product development tasks - Work with materials’ specifications - Conduct research on new materials - Provide sparring on choice of materials and processes - Technical procurement tasks
As a graduate, a Materials Science & Product Design engineer can, among other areas, work with product development, development and research of new materials and consulting about materials and process selection.

JBS hires interns, because we want to contribute to the industry’s and the students’ professional development. At JBS, we call the work placement period for a trainee period. The students are placed in different departments in the organisation and they get responsibilities and own tasks from day 1. We have two interns at JBS at the moment. One is working in our purchasing department, and the other one is in the production department. Emma, who works in the purchasing department, is responsible for servicing one of our Chinese suppliers. She works with everything related to shipment of materials to production, follow-up, approval and renunciation of goods. Mia, who is in the production department, has tasks related to production control and is responsible for preparing all the materials for our production in Lithuania.
