Vice-Chancellor and

The ambition of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is to be a University that leads in innovative knowledge and quality technology education. Apart from teaching and learning, research (generating innovative knowledge) is one of the top priorities in our institution. In the past few years various initiatives and interventions have been introduced to shore up and sustain a “culture of research”. These include local and international university collaborations on one hand and government, community and industry partnerships to address societal challenges on the other. The top 10national priorities of government form part of the inputs that determine our research agenda. Research that matters is about opportunities for our academics, new generation of academics and postdoctoral students to create new knowledge, products and services that can be gainfully applied for the betterment of society. In order to do this, our research focuses on deepening our understanding of underlying phenomena and social conditions so as to generate novel, viable and scalable solutions to challenges in industry and society.

The University has adopted an inter-disciplinary approach in its research. This enables our researchers to harvest knowledge platforms gained across the four faculties of Engineering and Technology, Applied and Computer Sciences, Human and Management Sciences, as well as the Directorate for Technology Transfer and Innovation. Collaboration with industry adds a pragmatic dimension to the laboratory work of our researchers.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their contribution in raising the research profile of the Vaal University of Technology. To the reader, I trust that you will find value in this edition of Research Matters.

The availability of supervisors remains a challenge. It was therefore necessary to continue to source external supervisors. This assisted growth in areas which would have been impossible without this support. The Institution focuses on growing its postgraduate cohort. It is therefore imperative to enhance the throughput of existing students. The induction programme that was started in 2011 continued into 2012 and was extended to provide participation opportunities to students from all faculties.

Academic and Research

Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is a teaching institution with a specific research mandate. It accepts its mandate in delivering technology focussed education and developing technological solutions based on appropriate research which defines its research focus. The Institution therefore aims its research focus, while informing its teaching programmes, at real societal needs. This implies an orientation that consistently asks questions about research that matters in order to ensure real impact in and on society. The focus during 2012 remained on establishing effective alignment and a seamless process from the research idea and process to invention and innovation. This perspective requires a clear consideration of the relationship or nexus amongst research, teaching and innovation. The effective integration of the three aspects guarantees curricula sufficiently grounded in theory and application which impact on the graduateness of the learning processes, while the innovation orientation feeds into technology development and the continuous impact on the research agenda committed to output and impact. The challenge remains to find alignment within contexts. For this reason the approach is focussed on positioning the Institution’s activities in terms of the quadruple helix perspective as realised in the context of the national innovation environment. To ensure the alignment with the role players in the quadruple helix relationship, work started on the developing

of a work-based research concept as a frame of reference to guide research initiatives. In this approach direct interaction with partner industries or organisations defines the research need and focus, while the research outcome is immediately relevant and available for implementation. Postgraduate students are therefore functioning in a collaborative environment between the University and industry. This partnership strengthens the theoretical and practical value of research and researchers benefit from wider exposure whilst gaining practice-based skills.

The Hub-and-Spokes programme developed in 2012 to the extent that the first students who received financial and specific academic support while attaining exposure in their respective departments, graduated. These students can now be considered for academic positions. A second Centre of Excellence in Alternative Energy was approved and will soon be launched. With the drastic increase in research outputs and the growth in participation, the Institution needs to continue to strengthen its support base to researchers and postgraduate students.

Continuous research endeavours aimed at promoting the institutionalisation of the research focus areas. This was done through creating awareness and supporting the existing research centres and focus areas. To grow a research culture in a previous Technikon environment requires research opportunities, capacity and support conducive to growth. During 2012 incessant focus was given to building staff capacity through development programmes that included research, writing, knowledge and skills. Through financial support and support to gain exposure to national and international forums, academics were assisted to grow their skills and gain experience. Specific programmes to support staff capacity in the SANTRUST programme where forty staff members are receiving support to finish their doctoral studies delivered beyond expectation. This initiative will not only enhance research output but also grow the number of supervisors available for the growing number of postgraduate students.

I want to congratulate the academics and the staff of the research office for sterling achievements in 2012.

The continuous focus on the improvement of infrastructure continued in 2012 and the approval of funding for the extension of laboratory facilities provided a significant impetus to further grow the research base of the Institution both for teaching and research purposes. Based on the growing research profile of the Institution the need exists for specialised research infrastructure and teaching capacity, which will be further addressed by the grant received. I want to congratulate the academics and the staff of the research office for sterling achievements in 2012. The VUT is well-positioned to continue its research development journey.

Prof. Alwyn Louw DVC: Academic and Research

Direct or

Executive Research

Research at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has been growing from strength to strength. Our most critical challenge currently is to deepen our research culture through institutionalising research into the fabric of the institution. Our legacy offers us with both opportunities and challenges. We remain well-positioned among industries which can be credited for the initial establishment of the institution. On the other hand we continue to strive to introduce, sustain and develop a vibrant and active research climate at our institution. Developing research capacity within an institution in which very few academics have been active has been a great opportunity. Research is movement and without movement, we are at risk of being left behind. Fortunately, increasingly more and more academics have become interested in undertaking research. Many have initially started off by attending research capacity development workshops and programmes. This has developed further as staff has shown increasing commitment to improving their qualifications through registering for master’s and doctoral degrees. The VUT SANTRUST partnership has assisted greatly in assisting the institution in supporting specifically doctoral staff qualification development.

Institutional policies and structures have been further strengthened to encourage and support staff in becoming research active. It is of course a challenge to established staff who in the past might not have been required to undertake research, although sufficient support and encouragement from leadership and colleagues offer staff with the motivation to develop further. Research offers a unique opportunity

The global economic crisis has placed great pressures on universities to establish their unique contribution to societal and economic development. Our institution is continuously thinking through ways in which to claim its unique space. One such initiative we believe we need to foster is work-based research opportunities to support our graduates in adding to the high skills levels in our country and to be work ready.

for individuals to challenge themselves and to continuously experience the process of self-actualisation. The challenge we find is to stimulate confidence and to systematically create appropriate opportunities for staff to experience a supportive and nurturing environment.

The ripple effect will be that faculty too will have a different experience of knowledge production as they too become active role players in work-based research. Universities are surrounded by ubiquitous information, emerging degrees and industry initiated new colleges and universities to ensure that they get what they specifically need in the workplace. Our challenge will continue to remain the relevance of our knowledge contribution. We are confident that what we have been developing in our key strategic areas will support our society in moving forward.

Nurturing our postgraduate culture and environment is critical at our institution. We remain committed to developing the Next Generation of Scholars through our Hub-and-Spokes Programme on which we have 25 scholars. During 2012, they have extended themselves as a collective in engaging with local school learners on the importance of

Direct or Technology Transfer and Innovation

The Vaal University Technology (VUT) is engaged in partnership models in the southern Gauteng region to develop shared strategies for the advancement of social, technological and economic development. This aligns with proven international models, where regional alliances involving Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are an effective means to achieve economic growth, and for moving economies into higher skills levels. As such, the Technology Transfer and Innovation Directorate (TTI) adds an extra conduit through which the VUTcan impact regionally, nationally and internationally. The TTI creates opportunities for the University to collaborate with Commerce, Industry and the Community, together with Government departments and agencies to facilitateoperating through a quadruple-helix mode. This enables the VUT to create an entrepreneurial university environment by: •

Setting up technology platforms or competence groups to respond to strategic government priorities, or in line with industry, commerce or community needs;

Transfer and commercialise university research products to commerce, industry and the community;

Develop opportunities for students (internships, jobs, entrepreneurship);

Commercialise know-how and innovation by students, graduates and staff and capitalises on business

development realised by other potential entrepreneurs; and •

Set up campus companies where the University might retain a stake in the firm for a while.

The TTI strives to create sustainability in terms of research development, innovation and technology transfer and demonstration through the generation of 3rd stream income to support innovative research and development in support of industry and community needs (also through assets in the form of new technology platforms or income through external grants, licensing agreements, patents or equity in start-up businesses). In parallel, availability of new technology platforms broadens the VUT’s research base, builds research and innovation capacity and facilitates the transfer of skills and technology to the wider community (which includes commerce and industry). This enables the University to address knowledge generation and development of human resources. Based on the foundation of creating an external funding stream to support industry-oriented research and development and skills development, the VUT-community created a sustainable system to develop and maintain partnerships and markets that generate demands for new products and services. The TTI, through its different structures, supports companies (or industry clusters) that seek a fresh approach to development and marketing strategies by availing technology platforms,

technologies. Since the restructuring of universities in South Africa, the VUT inherited the previous VISTA campus some distance from its present main VUT campus in Vanderbijlpark. The site is approximately 172 ha. in extent, of which only a small portion has been developed. The availability of the land andexisting buildingsallowed the VUT to develop a Science and Technology Park (STP). Conceptual planning started in 2008, and theTechnology Transfer and Innovation Directorate finally relocated to the Science and Technology Park in May 2012. The VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park was officially opened by Minister Naledi Pandor in June 2012. The existing buildings on the STP terrain are robust, flexible to alter and generally in a good condition. The site also houses the former Sedichem incubator, developed for biotechnology and chemistry-based start-up companies. The Institute for Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) managed to revitalise the failed incubator. Most of the Technology Station Programmeimprovements to date have been to the previous library, which now houses the TTI directorate, the Technology Station and the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct. The VUT management was convinced that converting the EduCity Campus into a Science and Technology Park was necessary. For a university such as the VUT, establishing a Science and Technology Park has several broad benefits:

To raise the profile of a host and situation as agents of change in a region to promote technology led economic development.

While the STP would initially focus on incubating new businesses, it will become a site for improved interaction and networking and a platform from which to match solution seekers to solution providers and opportunity to integrate similar business needs and interests along defined clusters within the economy. The possibility of gradual movement of Research Centres of Excellence to the STP will also help to develop a research and innovation value-chain, to further support industry and community support. A Science and Technology Park (STP) in the southern Gauteng region would be able to achieve the following: •

Provide a point for interaction and integration for complementary agendas of societal stakeholders towards contributing towards eradicating poverty and stimulating sustainable livelihoods through resource sharing and support;

Stimulate and re-energise economic activity within the

In becoming operational, the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park became South Africa’s first example of a university-owned working STP in a more rural settlement. Therefore, the VUT SG STP’s aim is to create a bridge

between the University and the community, and to facilitate local innovation and economic development within the rural area that it serves. In this mode, skills development is part of its core business strategies, and recent grants and financial support showed that if the full value chain is created (from skills development to new venture creation), ample financial support will be available to create a sustainable STP model that can act as benchmark for others to follow – not only within SA or the continent, but world-wide in developing economies, and in line with renewed international strategies to develop STP models that could help to shape the futures of cities (or rural metropoles)!

Faculty of Engineering and Technology

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology revamped the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee (FRIC) during 2012. This has improved the quality of research proposals due to all-inclusive assessment criteria. The generated research proposals are interdisciplinary in nature, thus reinforcing the University’s directive for greater interdisciplinary research approach among researchers. As we endeavour to make our teaching, learning and research complement each other, researchers at the Faculty are stressing the importance of the need to focus more on applicable research, where both the industry, government and society benefits. This is further stressed through the research focus areas/centres of excellence in the Faculty namely: •

Applied Electronics encompassing the Telkom centre of excellence in fuel cells.

High voltage in collaboration with industrial contracts, we are very optimistic of breakthroughs in this area.

Vibration monitoring as a great potential area for growth in partnership with Eskom should be able to give pointers towards optimisation of conductor life span, thus giving pointers towards maintenance schedules. Technology Transfer and Innovation Centre has taken off as shown by the number of postgraduate students

in this area. If well nurtured, this area will play a pivotal collaborative role for the Faculty of Engineering works, with the government’s emphasis ofneed to grow the manufacturing sector to re-vamp our economy, thus creating space and jobs to fast track addressing unemployment especially amongst our youth.

Optimisation/numerical modelling a focus area that no doubt will be accelerating research into numerical modelling in the Faculty. This area cuts across almost all the engineering focus areas of the Faculty thus needing all the support. A number of research papers from this area are documented.

The Faculty continues to grow own timber under the SANTRUST programme. Hopefully the number of staff with doctoral qualifications per department will be greatly improved. This will contribute to both the number and quality of our research outputs. Due to the stress in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), the University is emphasising the need for most of the staff in the Faculty to improve qualifications to doctoral levels. This is stressed by the emphasis put on staff in these areas to be accorded special preference in their pursuit of doctoral qualifications under SANTRUST and other options which comes from time to time.

As we endeavour to make our teaching, learning and research complement each other, researchers at the Faculty are stressing the importance of the need to focus more on applicable research, where both the industry, government and society benefits.

Application of instrumentation systems in industrial processes is placed under the focus area of instrumentation and automation. This area has been steadily growing and will soon challenge other focus areas given the steady interest amongst postgraduate students applying to undertake research in the area.

The Faculty continues to grow collaboration and partnership with both old and new partners locally, regionally and globally. This is to open up and to register our presence across the nation, thus stressing need for North-South and even South-South academic collaborative/partnerships. The research department has always and still supports growth in areas of consulting professors and postdoctoral fellows to assist in fast tracking research at the Faculty. While our research output for the year has not been very impressive, I personally wish to state that research at the Faculty has a bright future. I will give it special attention during the coming academic calendar.

Executive Faculty of Human Sciences

Collaboration across traditional disciplines and the “invention” of new ways to approach old problems is perhaps our Faculty’s greatest assets. High-quality research outputs produced in a variety of genres reflect the rich diversity of intellectual engagement on the part of academics in the Faculty – book chapters, journal articles, edited collections, exhibitions and compositions are outstanding examples of such contributions. Detailed information on these outputs is presented at the back of these reports. The Faculty aspires to become a highly valued nexus for scholars to engage with global issues through an African lens. Research advances depend even more on collaboration. Indeed, today’s research with the greatest impact emerges from the convergence of multiple disciplines. In 2012, the Faculty of Human Sciences hosted an exciting and diverse menu of seminars, symposia and colloquia designed to engage audiences in researching and engaging some of the most pressing questions facing society and scholarship today. More than 32 publications were recorded across the Faculty. 12 were published in accredited journals.

The Faculty’s research profile was further enhanced by staff member’s attendance at various national and international conferences and by their involvement in a wide range of applied research projects. Research informs our graduate education and makes the quality of learning experience second to none. We continue to attract advanced-degree candidates from all over the world. The numbers indicate the Faculty’s research portfolio is balanced across the academic discipline. And because we have a balanced portfolio, we have successfully implemented an interdisciplinary approach to much of our research and creative work. At the Faculty of Human Sciences we refer to ourselves by choice as a place of knowledge and a research led Faculty, one that prizes scholarship and its influence on all that we do. We are grateful to our research partners for longstanding partnerships and we pay tribute to our donors; withouttheirsupport the Faculty would not have been in a position to maintain a sustainable research growth curve.

Prof. C.M. Van der Bank EXECUTIVE DEAN: FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES

The Faculty aspires to become a highly valued nexus for scholars to engage with global issues through an African lens.

Executive Faculty of Management Sciences

I feel elated to report on our research activities in the Faculty of Management Sciences. Our staff members have risen to the occasion to grasp the challenges and embraced research wholeheartedly. Their dedication and commitment shines through in research and our research trajectory has gradually been on the incline. Our postgraduate component has been exponential with a large number of students either engaged in master’s and doctoral studies. The postgraduate induction programme introduced in the Faculty has provided a fertile ground to nurture our students to engage, critique and construct alternatives, and find solutions to contemporary issues that we are confronted with in research. We are committed to continuously engage with our postgraduate students to develop a sound foundation in research, to view the world with different paradigms and practices so that they have freedom to shape their own career paths. Our Faculty has also excelled in accredited research outputs. A total of 41 research outputs (article equivalence = 35) were generated from faculty members. It was also pleasing to note that many of our staff members collaborated with researchers from other universities and countries. In addition, a total of 25 staff members presented papers at national and international conferences. Further

milestones were achieved in the Faculty whereby three (3) staff members have completed their master’s degrees. The participation of our staff in the SANTRUST initiative is also beginning to bear fruit. The Faculty has continued with its endeavours by building research capacity, especially among emerging and novice researchers. The various faculty-staff development workshops have seen many of our researchers coalesce around problems and themes that impact on society and the environment. The analytic and research skills honed during these sessions have paved the way for constructive engagement in research. The Faculty Research Symposium was a tremendous success that afforded the opportunity for staff to showcase their “research in progress” in materialising their work into possible research outputs. Furthermore, master’s students were also given an opportunity to present their proposals amongst peers and staff at a Faculty Colloquium held in the Isak Steyn VIP lounge. The Faculty also held a very successful research awards function on the Liquid Lounge with Prof. Surujlal, Prof. M. Dhurup and Dr D. Pooe receiving the Research Excellence awards and Dr K. Mathu, Mr C. Mafini and Dr A. Mӧllerreceiving the Research Achievement awards. Faculty members also held their heads high when two of our Faculty members, Prof.Surujlal and Prof. M. Dhurup, received the coveted 1st and 3rdprize awards respectively in the University-wide award for Research Excellence. Dr K. Mathu and Mr C. Mafini also displayed their research prowess by receiving the Achievement awards. These achievements were largely as a result of creating a stronger and more sustainable research culture in the Faculty. As we move deeper into the twenty-first century, many societal and global changes which begin impact on our environment, health and well-being calls for new forms of intervention and innovation through research in addressing these problems.

The Faculty will strive in the next few years to grow in this area by making research relevant and meaningful. Gratitude must be extended to the Research Directorate and the DVC: Academic and Research for their support and resources to grow research in the Faculty. With the continuous refinement of our programmes in the Faculty and support to faculty members, we would continue to maintain an unwavering dedication to the pursuit of excellence in research.

Prof. M. Dhurup EXECUTIVE DEAN: Faculty of Management Sciences

As we move deeper into the twenty-first century, many societal and global changes which begin impact on our environment, health and wellbeing calls for new forms of intervention and innovation through research in addressing these problems.

The establishment of the household soy gardens and resultant soy consumption is a good example of how communities can be empowered to become more self-sustainable and healthier.

The mission of the Centre of Sustainable Livelihoods (CSL) is to train and build capacity to address poverty and its resulting consequences in Africa, specifically in South Africa. This is achieved through the implementation of various relevant and high-quality research projects by CSL researchers and postgraduate students, leading to significant scientific impact through publications in scientific journals. One of the aims of the CSL is that all research undertaken should have an impact on the development of communities, specifically related to the nutritional and health status of the children and their caregivers through the implementation of sustainable food and nutrition interventions in these communities. The year 2012 was a productive year for the CSL. Firstly, the South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD) funded project was completed with a number of milestones being reached. This community research project entitled: Addressing household food insecurity and malnutrition in QwaQwa, resulted in significantly improving the health and well-being of the children and their caregivers. The implementation of the soy gardens and soy recipes in the daily menu planning did not only contribute to the alleviation of household food insecurity, but also contributed to a higher macro- (energy, protein,

specifically plant protein) and micronutrient (vitamins B3, B6, folic acid, calcium, iron, zinc and manganese) intake. The soy consumption also contributed to improved mean folate, glucose, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The establishment of the household soy gardens and resultant soy consumption is a good example of how communities can be empowered to become more self-sustainable and healthier. Secondly, the CSL contributed to the VUT research outputs by publishing five articles and three abstracts in accredited peer-reviewed journals and three articles in non-accredited peer-reviewed journals, as well as delivered 12 international conference papers and successfully supervised three MTech students. We hereby wish to thank our funding agencies (NRF, SANPAD) for their financial support as well as the communities in which we work, our postgraduate students and all other stakeholders for their co-operation in making it possible for us to make a difference through scientific research.

A problem experienced at remote telecommunication sites is the apparent lack of reliable uninterrupted power. The emergence of the fuel cell represents a possible alternate to the provision of power at these remote sites. Comparative studies of the zinc-air fuel cell, the methanol fuel cell, the phosphoric acid fuel cell and the PEM fuel cell have been completed. The research led us to a new type of sustainable energy source. This renewable source of energy will benefit both remote telecommunication sites and possible small rural communities comprising a few houses and a school. A complete solar/hydrogen/fuel-cell power plant with a capacity of 1kW was developed and constructed. The power plant can deliver power during the day as well as during the night. The system has been tested over a period of several months and improvements and changes have been made to improve the efficiency of the individual sections and entire system. The system can be used by both the telecommunications industry as well as by small rural communities. The following projects associated with the power plant were completed: •

A solar tracking system

An electronic control system for the entire power plant

A solar hydrogen manufacturing system

Control software development for the hydrogen production plant

The development of special hydrogen storage tanks

A monitor system for the hydrogen production and control of the hydrogen flow to and from the tanks

A DC-DC converter for a phosphoric acid fuel cells that efficiently provides a stable output voltage from the varying PAFC output voltage

Direct or Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology

This document attempts to clarify the strategic position and direction of the ICBT. It is informed by the records before me in terms of the purpose of establishment and the history thus far. The ICBT was conceptualised by the Rectorate of the Vaal University of Technology in an attempt to, amongst others, exploit rich industrial terrain of southern Gauteng. It is for this reason that SASOL Chemical Industries donated a land in its ChemCity Park for downstream chemicals manufacturing and research work. It is clear from this that the Institute was mandated to bridge the gap between the University and industry.

mainly in chemical and biotechnology related projects. The ICBT puts its resources, facilities and infrastructure towards the incubation and nurturing of Chemical and Biochemicalrelated business units, both from within the VUT and outside the University. It welcomes all individuals and developing and developed businesses alike. Staff profile

The question is then, is the ICBT living up to this mandate and in which way?If not, why not?Thesequestions are addressed in the following manner:

Since its re-establishment the ICBT never employed permanent staff. There has been renewal of contracts from time to time for support staff and renewal of a secondment of the Director. This is not a healthy situation. This was brought to the attention of the University management but with no intervention. The hindrance in positive outcomes can be partly because of this unhealthy state.

All about the ICBT

Governance

What is the Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology?

The Institute is depended on an advisory board which in its state was productive. Good views and advice emanated from the board. Unfortunately the Director does not have powers to implement these. The advisory board was more of a talk shop and its members got frustrated of non-action on what they advised.

The Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) is a unit within the Technology Transfer and Innovation division (TTI). The Institute initially received its mandate from the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences and has since stretched to be inclusive of all other Faculties and the community of the Vaal University of Technology and beyond, hence its residence within the TTI. The ICBT, as it is normally referred to, strives towards enterprise and SMME development

The Director of this Institute has since been reluctant to convene further meetings.

The research agenda is determined by industry, government and the community.

78 Alignment to the Faculties The alignment to the Faculties has not been sound. There has been a positive response from the Faculty of Engineering’s Executive Dean’s office and the Chemistry Department of the Applied and Computer Science. There are shared vision and ambitions between the two Faculties. This has a direct and positive bearing in research agenda forthe two Faculties. For example, Prof. Modise and Prof. Sipamla continue to supervise and co-supervise students of the Chemistry Department at both master’s and doctoral level. More can be done if the ICBT was capacitated enough to play a direct role in the research topical areas in both faculties. Sadly, some members of staff including the HoDs are on record for shooting down the concept of ICBT. The sceptics’ attitude is causing the “us and them” syndrome which subsequently limits the scope of the ICBT, and this attitude is counterproductive, to say the least. Research Agenda The research agenda is determined by industry, government and the community. All the ICBT units are in one way or the other involved in research. 1. Natural Resource Management Programme will soon be operating in Centurion (Pretoria). The ICBT has successfully negotiated the re-establishment and re-engineering of this programme with subsequent agreement with the Department of Environmental Affairs (DoE). If successful, the programme will be in a position to impact on the medicinal plant extracts research that is already on-going in the VUT. This will be over and above research work that will be done on alien vegetation as identified by the DoE. Staff has

been committed to this effect and three historically disadvantaged institutions (HDI: University of Venda, North-West University Mafikeng Campus and University of Limpopo (Polokwane) will be among the service providers; as requested by the Ministry. The oil extracts from this facility will be researched into product formulation and readied for sales. Up to 20 students per year will benefit in work-integrated learning that will be afforded by this business unit. Further, projects will be identified for students to enrol for MTech and DTech degrees in this field, supervised by ICBT staff and staff from the participating HDI universities mentioned above. 2. SEDICHEM is a chemical incubator and draws its clients from the VUT and the community. It is characterised by clients who do have brilliant ideas but not the technical know-how of correctly getting to the product. The incubator is funded by both the VUT and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) via Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP). Product development and improvement and validation of claims are done in conjunction with individual researchers in the Chemistry Department and the VUT clinic. The involvement is because researchers are willing and are approached and with no stipend. There is no clear strategy on how to involve all other researchers amid the Non-Disclosure Agreement clauses signed with the incubatees. There is an attempt of involving some BTechstudents and couple them to product development and quality control of new products. In this way they will not only gain experience but might also be inspired to become entrepreneurs.

3. Tzaneen Demonstration Centre is located in Tzaneen and offers an opportunity for essential oil to be pressed off the citrus fruit. Although the ICBT was involved in conceptualising the Centre, much has happened without its involvement. There is no immediate plan to continue participating in this Centre. The plan is however, to reignite the Upington Vegetation Programme which intend exploiting the unique climate and flora in the Northern Cape. In this programme, oil will be extracted from the selected and explored for formulation of drugs, cosmetics and hair-care products. Experience and expertise gained at the Centurion project will come in very handy here. 4. ChemCity (name change envisaged) is a social responsibility arm of SASOL. As stated above, a piece of land has been donated to the VUT’s ICBT. After a long delay of proclamation of the township, we are gearing on a fundraising drive from this year to enable the development of a Downstream Chemicals’ Research facility. The motivation of the VUT to SASOL for partnering and subsequent donation has always been to “exploit SASOL waste to new products”. This motivation was and is still owned by the Rectorate and Council of the VUT. It is envisaged that the new building plan will come to fruition in this year. Research work done here will be aligned to the VUT academic and research programme and vice versa. At this site the VUT’s ICBT will be positioned to also play a role of research and knowledge partners to businesses occupying the park.

Suggested Strategic Direction Short-term strategy To match activities of the ICBT to the personnel, there is an urgent need to review the current mandate of the ICBT and employ permanent staff with clear roles. Having managers/coordinators for each unit will make business sense. To align the units’ activities to the VUT’s research and academic programmes. Medium-term strategy To bring back the idea and dream of ChemCity to the table and make it realisable. To ensure that AMBIO realise its full potential as a business. To synergise and build linkages between all the units(see figure below). To stimulate research in all the units. Long-term strategy An empowered ICBT capable to influence local and national agenda. Positive impact on the research and academic agenda of the VUT. Generating a third-stream income vehicle for the VUT. Positive impact on the community.

RESEARCH Strengthening ties through research collaboration The Eskom/VUT research workshop was held on 11 May 2012 at the VUT, and offered each party an opportunity to make presentations on its current research projects that will show how the collaboration efforts have succeeded to date. The workshop reiterated the importance of the strategic role of the VUT to serve the research needs for industrial partners such as Eskom. Eskom, one of South Africa’s largest consumers of water, is guaranteed water supply from the government, however the problem is that the water is not ready for use. The water still has to undergo vigorous forms of treatment before it is fit for industrial consumption and use. As an institution of higher learning, leading in cutting-edge technology, Eskom then approached the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) with the intention of bringing synergy between applied and

fundamental research into finding ways of collaborating in specific projects. This offered the VUT the opportunity to showcase our research strengths as several niche research areas were identified such as Water Purification, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Waste Management and Energy.

Prof. Louw: Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic & Research said that technology represents a higher order of creating new knowledge, therefore we, as a University of Technology; our academic mandate is to train people on how to develop appropriate and real solutions through research, thus creating new knowledge.

The following are the approved research focus areas:

Mounted vertical axis wind turbine The Vaal University of Technology’s and Eskom’s Exhibition Boards that were displayed during thepresentationsand discussions Mr Gerhard Gericke: Eskom Delegates Leader explained that Eskom plays a role in the development of human capital. The sharing of knowledge then becomes a mutually beneficial partnership for industry and the VUT to assist in the creation of new knowledge stemming from research that will ultimately be siphoned to the relevant communities that will benefit from research that matters.

Vaal University of Technology leads in Research That Matters The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has made significant strides and is aggressively researching avenues for green energy. To this end our academics from the Technology Station has also been privileged to have been part of the Climate Talks at the COP17 Summit with exhibits on the latest wind turbines technology.

The VUT is committed to research and development resulting in several approved research focus areas that are currently underway. This has led to international collaboration agreements for staff and student exchange programmes to advance research, innovation and partnerships. The VUT is working at a pace that sets us apart from other institutions of higher learning. From a technology perspective, our wind turbines technology drew much anticipated interest at the exhibit of the Technological Innovation Agency (TIA) stand during the Cop17 Summit. Furthermore, we are preparing for experiments of a totally new wind turbine, one that opens and closes to optimise recovery of power from wind. This is a world first and we have

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Institute of Applied Electronics – A sustainable solar-driven hydrogen plant, using fuel cells, is currently being developed to supply power to rural communities and off-grid telecommunications sites. This involves hydrogen generation and storage using solar energy and regenerative fuel cells. Research into the application of photovoltaic cells also forms part of this research. Other research involves the dielectric heating of materials via radio frequency power.

Photovoltaic cells used to power the solar-hydrogen power plant on the roof of the VUT library building. Materials Technology – Materials research is aimed at the development of new materials with specific properties for special uses, e.g. nano-materials, superconductors, light metals, etc., much important research on materials is also being done on the benefits of raw natural materials and their engineering applications, especially in trying to find the right material for specific technological applications. The latter is

more important at the Vaal University of Technology where one of our goals is the development of prototypes with commercial potential.

Ambio Environmental Management Laboratory – Preliminary results have confirmed the value of wetlands in improving the water quality prior to release into rivers. In addition the study has also provided valuable cost-effective solutions to ensure sustainability of the wetlands.

Innovative Product Development and Advanced Manufacturing Technology – The research focuses on the use of Additive

platforms.

The group investigates key factors for competitive industrial product development and innovation in terms of utilisation of tools and procedures, organisational co-operation and parallel processes, as well as interdisciplinary teamwork.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), to determine the presence of contaminations inwater.

Water Research Initiatives – As South Africa is known to be a portable waterscarce country, our focus is to meet the challenges of increased industrial pollution of water aquifers. Testing and development of old and new techniques are used for the removal of dissolved substances from polluted waters. The VUT has established three groups to champion these projects.

Midvaal Water Treatment

to combine these technologies in future to offer a viable and efficient strategy to industry and the public sector.

Environmental Pollution Group – The group has focused on qualitative research that is assessing the water quality and investigating the degree of contamination in terms of biological contaminants such as pesticides and antibiotic-resistant microbes. In addition they have also investigated the use of biomass for the removal of heavy metals from industrial effluent. This strategy complements the membrane technology perfectly as it provides the opportunity to remove both high and low metal concentrations. It is intended

VUT student examining water samples using the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipment. Bioenergy – There is an increasing interest in studies that simultaneously address both environmental and energy issues. Most important among these studies is the generation of bioenergy from wastes, such as biogas production from wastewater. However, this method

is not very robust in reducing the toxic level of pollutants; hence there is a need to employ tertiary treatment methods further. The cost of operation is a major impediment for the wide use of tertiary methods such as solar photodegradation and adsorption. For the photodegradation our hope lies in the utilisation of free solar energy, while for the adsorption process the use of agricultural waste seems to be a panacea. The geographical advantage that Africa has is that the temperature favours the biogas production process and readily available solar irradiation favoursphotodegradation. Breeding plants for climate change – One way in which research can mitigate climate change is to breed crops that will adapt to slow environmental changes. Therefore the training of students for the science and technology workforce in South Africa is imperative in addressing some key problems within sustainable agriculture and rural development. The energy value of the technology is the motivation for stakeholders to treat wastewater and subsequently clean the environment.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Socially relevant research The VUT/Eskom Colloquium

the University’s mission to undertake research that impacts on people’s daily lives.

On the 3rd of November 2012, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a VUT/Eskom Partnership Colloquium on “Applicable Research: Opportunities and Possibilities”. There were three focus areas: water and environment, engineering (in particular additive manufacturing) and health security. Presenters came from the VUT, Eskom and international institutions.

Applicable research is based within a socio-economic context, addressing challenges within that environment. At the VUT, located in Vanderbijlpark and incorporating the VUT Science and Technology Park in Sebokeng, this means considering issues such as growing unemployment, the shortage of skilled labour (particularly within technical fields) and the slowed growth in the manufacturing industry.

The colloquium theme is at the core of the VUT as an institution, relating back to

ment and air quality – especially with the increase in informal settle ments. Partnerships and multi-stake holder collaboration result in new opportunities through interaction, cost efficiencies, resource sharing and the cumulative effect that results from momentum building. The events of the day included an exciting programme with six inter na tional presenters, revealing their astonishing research undertakings as well as presenters from ESKOM, the VUT staff members and postgraduate students.

Community Project at Thuto Lore High School The community project was to promote research, informing students that learning doesn’t only end with anational diploma or BTech degree. The postgraduate students were made aware that they can continue with their studies, and in addition if they academically perform well, they can obtain funding. Students were also made aware of how much this country needs researchers especially in the field of Science.

The mentees were divided into two groups and was given two classes. One class had the Biotechnologyand Engineering; the other class had the Chemistry and Human Science students. In each class, mentees presented for an hour and thereafter mentees rotated classes.

Learners showed interest and were eager to learn and participate.

HIGHER DEGREES

Postgraduate Studies includes all academic and professional programmes which require student achievement beyond the undergraduate level in any field, generally leading to the award of a master’s or doctorate (PhD) degree. We administrate all postgraduate admissions and registration into the various programmes, and we continuously try to improve the registration process. All resolutions taken at the Higher Degrees Committee meeting are kept on record, in our department and we share these resolution with all Supervisors and Promoters. We consider all matters that may arise in the course of the postgraduate work of any registered postgraduate student, including special requests, financial queries and other study related difficulties.

Objectives

Registrations

Grow postgraduate numbers to 700 students.

During 2012 the HDU has registered 322 students new and old.

Grow the National Diploma and BTech students into further study. Increase the number of awards outside focus areas and institutes. Monitor and evaluate the postgraduate awards on a continued base, which will assist the students to fund essential services, namely language editing and statistical services, and to assist in paying for printing and binding of dissertation/thesis. Benchmark against other institutions. Monitor, evaluate and improve postgraduate registration at the VUT.

Old students submitted their progress reports to enable us to monitor and evaluate their progress. Sum of Total Registrations

Centralise postgraduate administration. Ensure that postgraduate students have access to appropriate and relevant information. Support postgraduate development programmes at central level.

Postgraduate Development for 2012 The Higher Degrees Unit hosted the Postgraduate Induction Programme for first year postgraduate students in April 2012 for this year. The objective of the Postgraduate Induction Programme is to ensure that all students receive optimal support in their journey from the initiation until the completion of their postgraduate studies. If the VUT, were to excel in its service to postgraduate students through support in ways that demonstrate the institution’s ability to increase its postgraduate student numbers both at intake and output levels, such an intervention becomes a necessity.
