The story of
Petting Zoo
Week of August 2
The story begins when Gitche-Manito, the Great Spirit and Master of Life, descends from the Land of the Blessed to the Earth. Tribal prophets foresee his coming and call the chiefs and warriors of the tribes together. Gitche-Manito reminds them of all the gifts of nature he has bestowed on them, and emphasizes the futility of war. He commands the warriors to wash off their war paint and discard their weapons, and join together to smoke the calumet (peace-pipe). During his childhood, Nokomis, Hiawatha’s grandmother, shares the stories of her tribe, the Ojibways, with him, and introduces him to the wonders of nature. His playmates are birds and creatures. His childhood ends when he is able to go into the forest alone and kill a deer in order to provide food, clothing and shelter for his people. Against the wishes of Nokomis, Hiawatha travels to the Great Plains, to the land of the Dakotahs, to find and woo his heart’s desire, Minnehaha. Not only does Hiawatha love Minnehaha, but he also hopes their marriage will help to end feuds and wars between the Ojibways and the Dakotahs. He takes her to his home and the Ojibways prepare a wedding feast for the couple, complete with gift giving, singing and dancing. A severe winter brings Famine and Fever to the village. Hiawatha beseeches Gitche-Manito to provide food to the sick and dying. Sadly, Minnehaha passes away and Hiawatha grieves. Indian guides bring Christian missionaries to the Ojibways and Hiawatha welcomes them and is hospitable to them. Then, after bidding Nokomis and the villagers goodbye, he paddles his canoe westward and joins Gitche-Manito in the Land of the Blessed. Please note: The Performing Arts Camp is NOT covered by the general Summer Fun Program registration and requires separate payment in addition to the regular summer camp admission. See the enclosed registration forms for specific information.

Performing Arts Camp
July 6 - July 16th, 2010
SUMMER FUN all summer long GLM is a year-round Montessori program that offers themed summer camps. With special summer activities within the Montessori program, we provide continuity for returning students and develop teacher/child/family relationships with new students.
Toddler Fun in the Sun (18 Months - 3 Years) The summer is a great time for new toddlers to adjust to a day away from parents and other caregivers. The fundamentals of being “in school” are learned in a loving, fun environment. Toddlers attend age-appropriate assemblies and events and enjoy their own outdoor activities such as gardening and splashing in wading pools on warm days.
Summer Fun in the Sun (Pre-K thru Kindergarten) GLM staff have planned special summertime fun for newcomers and returning students. In addition to the continuity of the Montessori classroom curriculum, teachers will include the following activities:
Every Day
Gardening Outdoor sports Music / Movement Science
Every Week Games and Music Yoga Creative Art
Exploration Foreign Language Water play
Performing Arts Camp - July 6-16 only (Ages 6-12 Years) Separate fee
In two short weeks, kids learn about theater, audition, casting, memorize roles and dances - and on Friday, July 16, put on an entire children’s opera. Working with theater professionals, this is an extraordinary opportunity for children who are interested in theater. This program is open to both GLM children and the general public. 9-day attendance is required (this year the 4th of July Holiday falls on the first Monday).
Intro to the Performing Arts - July 6-16 only (Age 5 Years) Part of the Summer in the Fun program
This program is for GLM 5 year olds, enrolled in summer day camp. During Week 1 the children will be escorted daily, for 1-1/2 hours, to the performing arts building (Live-Oak classroom) and will then be returned to their regular GLM classrooms for ongoing activities. Week 2, parents must drop children at the theater and staff will return them to GLM. They will learn dances and songs from specialists and will perform in groups as fireflies and creatures of the forest. Arts, crafts, scenery projects and movement experiences and costumes are part of this introductory theatre program. 9-day attendance is required. Limited enrollment on a first-come, first served basis. PERFORMANCES
