Editor’s Note

Hello and welcome to the 14th edition of PaK MaG. I have to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came to our 1st birthday. It was a sensational afternoon with exceptional performances from local groups and a huge welcoming crowd. We raised over $1000 for Sea FM’s Give Me Five For Kids on the day so thanks again to Mighty Nice Meats and Brumbies Edge Hill for assisting us with our BBQ. This edition is all about Spring, one of my favourite seasons which is just around the corner! It’s a seasons, of flowers, races, pretty dresses and of course babies. Now, I think I jinxed myself the last few months with my “I don’t have children” statements… Yes my dear friends-Trent and I are having a baby! It’s a very exciting time, but as much as I think I know kids, I really only know how to have fun with them. I have never even changed a nappy! So mums and dads if you want to send in some parenting tips, morning sickness aka all day sickness tips and anything else you think we should know that would be fabulous as we have a lot of learning to do before the baby arrives in February. Send them to bree@pakmag.com.au On another note and just as exciting, we have some great giveaways this edition including VIP tickets to see Dorothy the Dinosaur live in concert the 21st of August at the Civic Theatre. See inside for more details on how you can win these plus many other fantastic prizes. Next month is another holiday edition, so if you have anything you think we should add make sure you let us know! Until next time, enjoy your month and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PaK MaG. Happy Reading, Bree

Do a 'Green' Spring Clean What does 'clean' actually smell like? How can you tell when your house is really clean? Is it when you can smell fresh zesty lemon, invigorating alpine trees or pot pourri? Marketers spend millions trying to get us to associate cleanliness with these manufactured smells but cleanliness itself doesn't smell like any of these things. In fact, 'clean' smells like nothing at all. Apart from the environmental impact of using harsh household chemicals there's also evidence to show that they are contributing to the rise in allergies, particularly the anti-bacterial brands. We may be eliminating bacteria from our homes but we are also preventing our children from building a resistance to them and we're replacing them with pollutants that are damaging our health. For example, two Australian studies have shown that many common household cleaners give off fumes, which can potentially increase the risk of developing asthma in children. And, a study published in the New Scientist, showed that mothers living in homes where aerosol sprays and air fresheners were used frequently were 25% more likely to suffer headaches and 19% more likely to suffer from depression. So, given that it's spring time, how can we do a thorough spring clean without resorting to the use of potentially damaging chemicals?

Dust The best way to remove dust is to use a damp cloth. And, did you know that in the small print of all the vacuum cleaner manuals it actually says that you need to change the bag after every use to be effective? Grease/dirt/scum There are 3 key ingredients you can use to clean anything in your home: vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. If you make your own cleaning products using these you'll save yourself money and be able to breathe easy knowing there are no pollutants in the air. To use them, mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and start cleaning. For more stubborn dirt and scum make a paste out of vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice and watch it fizzle. Leave for an hour and then wipe it clean. You can also use some of the excellent microfiber cloths on the market which enable you to shift grime physically rather than chemically. Mould Mould can cause some serious health issues and our humid climate obviously provides ideal conditions. The best way to deal with mould is to prevent it

www.pakmag.com.au

by wiping shower walls with vinegar and keeping the area as dry as possible. Plus here's some info for a Box out IF THERE'S ENOUGH SPACE Some (of many) uses for vinegar: 1.

Clean windows with a mixture of water and vinegar.

2.

Use water and vinegar to rinse glasses and dishes to remove film and spots.

3.

Remove scale from kettles by adding water and vinegar and let stand overnight.

4.

Wipe your oven frequently with vinegar to help prevent a buildup of grease.

5.

Add a little vinegar to the water when mopping tile floors. It will make them shine and also act as a deodorant and prevent mould and mildew.

6.

Wash your kids' hair in it once a month to prevent nits!

PARTY BLOOPERS

or PARTY POOPERS? By Elaine Seager

T

he food at children's parties is changing. The media is peppered with stories of childhood obesity and ADHD and consequently some parents are getting the message and providing healthier food at parties. But most kids are still used to being served traditional party food. So, are you a party pooper if there's no cheezels' and fairy bread? Or, are you making a party blooper if you send other people's kids home hyperactive?

We're getting fat! A recent study found that Australia was now the fattest nation on the planet with 26% of the population being obese. That's quite a staggering achievement against stiff competition from the USA who have a 25% obesity rate. Within this, the overweight and obese rates amongst children are accelerating dramatically. Figures show that at least 50% of children who are obese will continue to be obese in to adulthood and with that comes all of the associated illnesses including diabetes, heart disease etc.

“Over the last 30 years the use of additives in food has increased significantly” Clearly, we need to be educating our children about eating healthily and not just because of regulating weight. Jamie Oliver's school dinner's programme also showcased the affect

26

of diet on children's behaviour. Simply by replacing junk food with fresh healthy alternatives there were noticeable changes in behaviour and concentration levels in the classroom. This won't have surprised many parents who say they notice how junk food causes a behaviour change in their children. Over the last 30 years the use of additives in food has increased significantly and many children's diets are almost entirely made up of processed foods making them heavily exposed to additives. Over the same time period, food intolerances, allergies and dietary irritants are on the increase. Whilst research has proven that children with ADHD tend to be sensitive or allergic to certain additives, the long term affects of feeding our children with a combination of many different additives is not known. However many are concerned about the enormous strain we are putting on their internal organs by making them process synthetic additives (some of which are made from petrochemicals!). Some research has shown that certain additives cause tumours when fed in large doses to animals. It doesn't take a nutritionist to realise that artificially manufactured food is obviously not as healthy as the stuff that we grow. But what should you do for the kids party? We spoke to Corinne Snowman, a 'Mum-on-aMission' who is passionate about informing parents of the risks of additives and chemicals in the home who recently faced this dilemma with her son's 6th birthday party: “It posed a moral dilemma for me knowing what I now know about additives and

www.pakmag.com.au

preservatives in food and the basic lack of nutrition in most packaged food. I was torn between buying foods that I know are absolutely no good for my child and the fact that most of the kids coming along to my son's birthday party were used to being served traditional party food” Corinne overcame her dilemma by serving fruit in the shape of faces (an idea sparked by her local supermarket), choosing less harmful brands of potato chips and plain pretzels and making some sushi instead of sandwiches. She admits that she wavered over the hundreds & thousands to make fairy bread but couldn't bring herself to buy them knowing that some of the colours had potentially carcinogenic ingredients in them. To top it all off she opted for 100% preservative free fruit juice and: “Visualising the party table, I figured home popped popcorn would top the table off nicely along with the birthday cake”

“A recent study found that Australia was now the fattest nation on the planet with 26% of the population being obese.” So, with a bit of imagination it is possible to provide a fun and colourful food table that's healthy too. Barbara Randle, another local Mum we spoke to, also said that the healthy food she provided at her daughter's party was very quickly devoured by the kids.

BEST AVOIDED

THE HEALTHY HOME-MADE OPTIONS

Twisties, Cheezels etc

Fruit skewers dipped in chocolate

Cheese sticks (pre-prepared)

Fruit cut in to different shapes Sandwich wheels

Fizzy/artificially coloured soft drinks

Cupcakes or muffins Chicken Nuggets

Lollies

Sushi Cheese sticks (ie. cut from a block of cheese)

BBQ chicken Corn-on-the-cob

ACCEPTABLE These can be made at home and at least have got some nutrients in them. Fairy Bread Sausage rolls Mini Pizzas

The only downside to going healthy is that it probably means making most of the food yourself. The whole reason why we have so many additives in our food today is because of our demand for fast convenient food. Getting back to basics means devoting more time to food preparation which is good in that it means you know what goes in it, but bad in that busy Mum's have to find the time to prepare it all. If you really are short on time and want to buy some pre-prepared snacks then look for the safer alternatives that are available. For example, if you want to buy chips, go for original varieties that don't have lots of artificial flavours (Kettle Original Chips are good). At the very least this will help to minimise the cocktail of additives that your children are eating.

SAFER ALTERNATIVES Kettle Original Salted Chips Smiths Original Doritos Original Natural Confectionery Co. Pascal Jelly Babies Natural Pascal Jelly Mallows Natural Allen's Snake Alive Natural Dick Smith Mini Mates or dark chocolate wheat biscuits Players Milky Tops, Choc Bottoms or Choc Crunch Shortbread biscuits

If you go to all the trouble of creating a healthier spread of food, don't undo all your hard work by giving the kids fizzy drinks to wash it down with. Here's a fascinating fact: Did you know (according to nutrition expert Patrick Holford), fizzy drinks get their

www.pakmag.com.au

7

fizz from a substance called phosphoric acid? The body uses calcium from our bones to neutralise this acid so that it doesn't damage us. So, to avoid weakening the bones and increasing the risk of osteoporosis, either choose organic fizzy drinks, which do not contain phosphoric acid, or add sparkling mineral water to fruit juice. Alternatively, provide some delicious fruit smoothies. The traditional lolly bag is also often packed with cheap lollies which contain numerous potentially harmful additives. Safer alternatives include products from the Natural Confectionery Co. and novelty items like balloons rather than lollies. If all of this seems like too much hard work you could always abandon the idea of catering altogether and invite everyone along to a picnic where they bring their own food! If you want to find out more about food additives, nutritionist Rob McIntyre will be presenting 'Food The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' on Friday 25th. July 7-9.30pm at the Oasis Resort, 122 Lake St. Tickets $12 from www.betterlivingresources.info or call 0407 996726.

R salicious Dorothy's coming to town!

D

orothy the Dinosaur has been busy entertaining young audiences around the world from New York to Shangai and now she's heading back to Australia with a brand new show. Pak Mag spoke to Dorothy ahead of her show in Cairns to bring you the inside information on her new tour.

What can we expect from your new show? This brand new show has been written by Anthony the Blue Wiggle, who also produced the music. The story line includes my friends Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, Don the Postman and of course, Fairy Clare and Fairy Larissa. Our goal with this show has been to bring the beauty and lush quality of the TV series to the theatre. Of course the rosy orchestra has also recorded some wonderful songs such as 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' and 'Dr Knickerbocker' and we'll dance a fairy jig. It's such an exciting new show; I can't wait for children to see it. You've released 2 DVD's, Dorothy's Dance Party and Memory Book as well as having your own TV series. What do the Wiggles think about you branching out on your own? They're very happy for me to sing and dance across Australia with some of my friends! I love travelling and meeting new friends. The TV show has been seen all across Australia on ABC and what is just as exciting is that my show is seen in 104 countries across the world. From Canada to Africa to Scandinavia, children are doing the “Romp Bomp A Stomp!”

By Bree James

What food do you take on tour? There is a big cast in my new show so I've got fairy bread for Fairy Clare and Fairy Larissa, vegetables for Captain Feathersword (sailors eat vegetables to prevent scurvy), juicy bones for Wags the Dog, seaweed pie for Henry the Octopus, a meat pie for Don the Postman and lots of Roses and rosy tea for me! What do you love about touring in the regions? Australia is such a beautiful country and I am so lucky to travel around and see everything. Of course I get to meet the friendly families that live in regional Australia. It's exciting to bring the show that's been seen in Quebec to local towns and cities. What will you be doing for the rest of the year? I'll be touring my new show around Australia and then I'll be joining the Wiggles on their “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” tour. I'll be performing with all my friends on the Carnival cruise ship around the Mexican Rivera and I'm hoping to start work on a very special animated DVD for next year.

Will you be performing songs from these DVD's? Yes, we'll be performing over 12 songs including 'Come on Let's Jump', 'To Have a Tea Party', 'Quack, Quack, Quack' and 'Romp Bomp A Stomp' and we finish with a big celebration with “Let's Have a Party”. What are your favourite colour roses? I love all roses from Bella Vitas to Mother of Pearl to Sorrayas but the best type of rose is one that is given with love! How old are you? I am 5 dinosaur years old. Dinosaur years are a lot longer than human years. What's your favourite food? All types of roses as well as my signature dishes - rosy posy soup, rose petal pie and a lovely cup of rosy tea.

Dorothy the Dinosaur will be appearing at the Civic Theatre on 21st. August.

SPRINGTIME PICNICKING By Elaine Seiger

Spring is here again and what better time to throw the picnic rug and esky in the car and head off to some of our local scenic spots before the sweaty season starts again. Cairns has more great spots for a picnic than we can mention but here's our pick of the best:

8. Ross and Locke: Ross and Locke is situated at the bottom of the Gillies Highway, and is a lovely picnic area with lots of places to choose from. Those with 4WD's have more options for picnic areas but you can still find a nice spot if you have a utility vehicle.

1. Babinda Boulders: A wonderful place to picnic with shaded facilities and table areas, and lots of places to cool off.

Picnic Olympics!

2. Behana Creek: Situated 5mins south of Gordonvale, Behana Creek has pristine, cool waters for swimming and some lovely shaded picnic areas and you won't find many tourists!

Keep the kids amused with these 'mini-Olympic Games': 1)

Sack race - take some pillowcases, you know how this one works.

2)

Egg & Spoon Race

3)

Backward Crawl Race - line the kids up on the starting line on their hands and feet. Turn them around and get them to race backwards. The winner is the one who doesn't keep looking back.

4)

Napkin Race - line up one napkin per 'athlete'. The kids start about 20 metres away and race to pick up a napkin using teeth only and then race back to the starting line.

5)

Mixed Up Shoe Scramble - this works best with lots of kids. Everyone takes their shoes off and put one in each of 2 piles. At the whistle, the kids have to find their own shoes and race to the finish.

3. Lake Eacham: A great day out and perfect for a family picnic. 4. Botanical Gardens: If you don't want to travel very far to get your 'outdoors in nature' fix there's always the lush tropical gardens on Collins Ave. There are plenty of shaded spots to put down your picnic blanket. 5. The Rocks at Redlynch: Locals have known about the Rocks for years but new residents to Cairns may not have discovered this local gem. It's a beautiful, secluded water hole, located on Rocks Road in Redlynch, surrounded by beautiful rainforest, and cool, running water. Very peaceful and relaxing. 6. Tinaroo Dam: Commonly referred to as “The Dam by the locals, it was created when a small village was flooded to create a man made dam. During droughts, you can still see the old fireplaces and even bridges from the old town. Also has camping facilities. 7. Lake Placid: Beautiful scenery and lots of spots for a picnic. Also has paddle boats and other equipment for hire if extra entertainment is needed for the kids. Be sure to wear waterproof shoes when swimming in Lake Placid in case of stone fish.

Health & Fitness Sleep to Be Happy, Sleep to Be Healthy The average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Bodies need sleep and they're all too happy to tell you. Stay up late and in the morning, you'll feel groggy and probably grumpy too. For a mother, getting enough sleep is even more of a challenge. Little sniffles collide with dirty laundry and the work you brought home to finish. Before you know it, you're collapsing with only a few hours left in the night. But getting sleep is essential to your health. Somehow, some way, you need to make it part of your plan to get it. We all know the effect sleep can have on moods, but it has serious impact on health as well. When you are in deepest sleep, blood supply to the brain decreases and the body dedicates itself entirely to healing. Achy muscles, nerve endings and even bad skin need sleep to repair themselves. During REM sleep (or dream sleep), your body focuses on processing emotions, an important psychological stress reliever. The immune system rejuvenates.

By Anne DeAcetis

Hardly any parent would refuse more or better sleep if it were easy to come by. The challenge is how to fit it in. With small children in the house, it can be hard to stretch the number of hours a parent gets. But there's a lot you can do to make sure that the sleep you do get is as restful as possible. Most parents are well aware that their children go to bed easier when they follow a routine. The first step toward getting a good night's sleep? Prepare yourself for bedtime at least as well as you prepare your children. Keep to a schedule for winding down. Start your routine at least 20-30 minutes before you plan to hit the sheets. (Brushing your teeth frantically to get to bed faster is no way to relax.)

When you get a good night's sleep regularly, your entire system functions efficiently. Digestion hums along. You're able to focus on tasks during the day. And quite simply, you're happier when your body is well rested. The day's challenges can be met with a sense of humour, not a series of resigned sighs. Depriving yourself of sleep can do real harm. It affects your attitude towards a hungry toddler, you'll have difficulty making decisions and it can impair your motor functions during activities like driving. Prolonged periods of sleep deprivation can cause your work to suffer and suppress the immune system, making you more susceptible to common illnesses. Researchers continue to probe the relationship between sleep deprivation and serious health problems like obesity, asthma and even diabetes. It can also lead to serious emotional problems.

If you find it hard to fall asleep, try bathing or reading to relax. Don't read or watch television in bed, as you want your body to associate your bed only with sleep or baby making. And it sounds cliché, but a warm, non-caffeinated drink can also calm you. (Drinking prompts the body to breathe evenly, which is why in emergency situations, someone will always ask you if you'd like a glass of water.)

And if you've had a particularly frantic week, ask your spouse to handle any crises that come up that night. Talk together about splitting up the week to ensure there are at least a few nights when each of you can get the extra winks. If your children are old enough, trade sleepover nights with other parents. Ask for help and offer to give itspread sleep! In a community of parents, you'll never lack for friends. It isn't always easy to prioritize sleep when the family needs you so much of your time. You give so much, work so hard and want only the best for your family. You never want to be selfish. But getting enough sleep is essential to take the best care of your family and yourself.

Warm relaxing bath Put aside your stresses for the day. They are real, but tell yourself truthfully, “None of that will be solved tonight. It is time to rest.” Talk with your spouse about when the day should end for both of you. Help each other stick to a sleep schedule as much as you can, even if it means leaving a few dishes in the sink.

Kids sleepover

According to Patrick Holford, an internationally acclaimed nutrition expert, food is not only necessary for the body to function well but it also affects how well the brain functions. Why?

1

Brains are made up of 60% fat so eating the right kind of fats makes you smarter. Omega-3 and omega-6 (found in fish and seeds) are very important to include in your child's diet. In fact, they are so essential to a baby in the womb that the baby will rob them from the mother's brain if she is not eating enough!

2

Nothing is more important for fuelling your child's brain than sugar and without it they can't think clearly. The trick is to keep the supply even. Some foods (white bread, biscuits, sweets etc) cause them to bounce off the walls whilst too little can cause fatigue, dizziness, anxiety and many other symptoms. Low GI foods (wholegrains, veggies, fruit, legumes) provide a slow trickle of glucose in to the bloodstream.

3 4 16

Vitamins and mineral are essential to building and rebuilding the brain and nervous system. They are also proven to boost IQ.

The neuro-transmitters in the brain are made from protein so proteins are also an essential brain food.

PaK with Health BEATING THE WINTER BLUES NATURALLY! We are amidst that time of year that brings anxiety and frustration to all parents. No, we're not talking about school holidays; we're talking about the winter cold season. Of course no parent likes to see his or her child suffer so the natural instinct is to try and do something. The question is what is the best way to handle things when our children get sick? Although logically we as adults know that there is no cure for the common cold, studies show that we let our emotions get the best of us when it comes to our children. In fact, studies demonstrate that: -

Nearly half of the children seen by physicians for common colds and flu are prescribed antibiotics which kill bacteria - despite the fact that the flu and nearly all colds are caused not by bacteria but by viruses

-

Parents rate their physicians with higher satisfaction when antibiotics are prescribed

-

There is often no statistically significant difference between length of cold duration between medicated and non-medicated children

With these facts in mind the natural question for a parent to ask is what can they do to help his or her child in times of illness. It is best to use this opportunity to promote and support immune health. This means getting adequate rest, lots of the right fluids and good nutrition. Also, whereas antibiotics kill off bacteria both good and bad, it may be better to supplement the system with probiotics

(which means pro-life). These aim to promote a stronger immune system and give less opportunity for harmful pathogens (disease causing agents) of all types to flourish and therefore make you sick. It is extremely important that the spine is working at it’s best to ensure proper immune system function. For example, dysfunction of the neck can stop proper drainage of the sinuses and ears leading to an increased chance of infection and therefore sickness. A spinal check from your chiropractor can detect if you child's spine is functioning at its best. Perhaps the biggest change we should make as a society is to change our outlook towards common childhood ailments. Instead of thinking of this as illness we should perhaps think of this as an important part of a child's immune system development, similar to upgrading the antivirus on your computer. Immunologists are now starting to realize the importance of illness in the development of a healthy immune system. Now if they could only find a better way of coping with school holidays‌

4cm apart, on to a sheet of baking paper. Flip paper over and place on a greased oven tray. Using a metric measuring spoon, spoon a slightly rounded tsp of mixture on to each circle. Use the back of a spoon to spread batter to fill circles. 3. Bake for 6-7 minutes or until cookies begin to brown around edges. Working quickly, slide a spatula under each cookie to loosen, then place a message on top of each. Fold hot biscuits in half to enclose, pressing edges together, then bend in half the other way, over the edge of a glass, to create crescent shapes. Hold for a few seconds. Place on a wire rack to cool. Get an adult to help you with this part as they get a bit hot and you have to be quick. 4. Repeat with remaining batter. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Notes & tips * Cook's tip: Baking paper can be reused up to four times; any more and cookies won't be as smooth.

Walking on the Wild Side with Jemma Hi Everyone How did you enjoy your holidays? I had lots of fun. As well as spending time at the zoo I went on a four day horse camp which was great fun. There have been lots of things happening with the animals here. Our two gibbons have finally arrived and they are very cute. They are living on an island in the middle of our hippo dam. The two servals that I told you about last month have settled in very well and love their new home. They spend a lot of time playing and sitting in the sun watching the birds flying around.

In August the Cubs Club is moving to a new club house which will be really cool. I can't wait. See you up here soon at the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve.

We have also just built a new pond in our petting zoo and we are waiting for some turtles and bluetongue lizards to arrive. Our snake whose name is Gundaya (the Aboriginal rainforest name for python) is enjoying her new

BULLETIN #8 Story & Illustrations by William Anthony

ENTURES OF BOPSTAR, BREE AND T THE TOTALLY AMAZING, IN V D A C I HE BOPPERS!! CREDIBLE, FANTAST Where there's a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there's no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.

answered, astonished and outraged, "It looks like some kind of cage, for fish!" All three Boppers could now see that it was a large fish cage and contained hundreds and hundreds of different fish. "Look! There's Wally and Sally!" whispered Eleese. Keeping an eye out for the farmers of this monstrosity, Bree crept up to the pair and asked what had happened.

FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS! Bulletin: Part VIII Last edition: Both Eleese and Bree looked at each other realizing that it was true. Other then Wally and Sally, who had left in a dazed trance, they had not seen a single fish, octopus or shark in a while. What could it be that was moving, or even more horrible, KILLING the fish? The Bopper trio had to find out….and FAST. Was it people? Aliens? Whatever it was, the Bopstars were going to find out! The Boppers huddled behind the bommie and looked towards the mysterious light. "Alright Boppers, follow me and I will try to get us closer to that light!" stated Bree, still a little worried about what they would find. With that, Eleese and Trent followed Bree's every move, creeping from bommie to bommie until they could see a large faint structure in the distance. "There it is!" whispered Eleese.

"Hi Bree. We are so glad to see you." said Wally. "What happened here? Why did you both swim off so fast?" asked Bree. "We don't know!" replied Wally and Sally simultaneously. "One minute we were with you and then all we remember is waking up in this cage!" said Wally. "I think the people running this farm are attracting all the fish off the reef and then they are…" stated Wally, gulping and continuing, "they are harvesting the fish!" Bree could not believe what she was hearing. Humans had set up this enormous cage and were killing all the fish on the reef. "We need back up!" declared Eleese, getting out her Super Duper Water, Shock and Bad singing proof phone out to call the police and let them know what is going on. "Sgt P. Mann, we need you to get out here ASAP! You're not going to believe your eyes!" explained Eleese. "We need a plan to stop the slaughtering and we need it now, before any more fish are harmed!" announced Bree.

And with that, a large metal mesh construction appeared in front of the Bopper trio. "What is it?" quivered Trent, huddled behind the two girls. Bree

Suddenly, a shadow could be seen getting nearer and nearer to the Bopstars. "Hide!" said Trent. To be continued…

PaK Animals Facts Green Turtle

A Threatened Species - Marine turtles Green turtles are amazing creatures and are great survivors, having been present in the oceans for more than 100 million years since the time of the dinosaurs! These shelled swimmers have been named "Green Turtle", not because of the green shell, but from the fatty deposits around its internal organs, however, the shell can be green but can also be brownish or yellowish. Green Turtles can grow up to an astonishing 1.5 metres long and reach up to and over 200 kilograms. The hatchlings are a shiny black with white edges to their flippers, and white underparts. A newly hatched green turtle is usually less than 5 centimetres long and weighs less than 25 grams. That means it could increase its weight 8000 times at adulthood! Green turtles nest on islands and coastal beaches all around the north of Australia, from Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia to southern Queensland. They can be found foraging right down into the subtropical waters of southern New South Wales. They are also a truly international species, and can be found in places as diverse as the Caribbean, the South Pacific, along the coasts of Africa and South America, and even the Mediterranean.

Baby & Toddlers

Pak Breast should be best for longer!

By Elaine Seager

When my Mum gave birth to me in the 1960's she was the only woman on the maternity ward who was breastfeeding. Back then it was considered a novelty and she was made to feel pretty uncomfortable by the nursing staff and other mothers so she hid away in the corner to feed me. These days it's probably the opposite, with those women not able to or choosing not to breastfeed, more likely to feel uncomfortable.

breastfeeding, the practicalities of making this happen are probably enough to put off any but the most committed. Dealing with work and sleep deprivation is enough for most to deal with. Culturally, there are a couple factors that may play a part: 1) many women are still not comfortable about breastfeeding in public and 2) we lead busy lives and our society is often very selfish so are we just wanting to 'get our lives back'?

The Health Dept has been successful in promoting breastfeeding to the extent that well over 80% of women will now at least begin breastfeeding at birth, even if they don't continue for very long. There's no doubt that breast milk is best for babies. It's a nobrainer it's natural and specially made for the baby, contains things not found in formula, is easily digested, the baby is less likely to get allergies and other diseases and the health benefits continue in to later life. There are also health benefits for the mother including fewer incidences of ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. However, whilst the majority of mothers begin the process of breastfeeding, recent figures show that very few are sticking to the recommendation to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months prior to introducing solids. The figures released by the Australian Institute of Family Studies showed that 71% of Australian babies are exclusively breastfed by one month, 56% by 3 months and only 14% for the recommended 6 months.

There are also practical considerations: the most common reason given for giving up breastfeeding is that the mother was not producing enough milk. Many women believe that they can't produce enough milk although this is very rarely the case. A decrease in milk supply usually occurs as a result of not giving enough feeds, poor positioning, changing sides too often or introducing solids too early. It is easily corrected by increasing the frequency of feeds even if it seems to have run dry (here's a good tip not often mentioned once you start to increase the frequency of feeds it takes about a week for the supply to increase). Even if you have to supplement some feeds with formula in the first few weeks it is still possible for your supply to suddenly come back on.

So, what stops Australian Mums continuing to breastfeed when, according to the World Health Organisation, the average amount of time that a child is breastfed on a global basis is 4.2 years! It's unlikely to be caused by lack of awareness since the probreastfeeding campaign is very evident. We know it's good for our babies and we also know there are lots of great resources out there to help us. It has been suggested that one reason for this, particularly with the current economic climate, is the pressure to return to work. Whilst the Australian Breastfeeding Association is at pains to point out that going back to work doesn't mean you have to give up

www.pakmag.com.au

31

The fact that only 14% of babies are exclusively breastfed by 6 months may also be because some mothers are introducing solids earlier than the recommended 6 months despite the risk of the baby developing food allergies or intolerances later in life. Anecdotally, there are mothers introducing solids prior to 6 months, usually because the mother either thinks it will help the baby sleep/settle or because they believe their appetite is too great for breastmilk alone. Whatever women's reasons for making their decisions its important not to judge those who can't or don't want to breastfeed. It's great that there are so many resources available now to help women achieve their breastfeeding goals but ultimately it's every woman's right to make her own choices about how long she wants to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding Tips 1.

Not all midwives in the hospital are experts on breastfeeding. Avoid confusing yourself by only listening to one that you're comfortable with or, if you're struggling, ask to see the lactation consultant.

2.

Ask the lactation consultant to help you find the best position that works for you they don't all work for everybody.

3.

Feed your baby as often as possible to increase your milk supply.

4.

Relax! Anxiety and stress are common initially but unfortunately they don't help your ability to breastfeed. If after days/weeks of trying you are worried that your baby is starving (we've all been there!), do yourself a favour and give them a bottle of formula. It doesn't mean you've failed, you can still continue to breastfeed. Do whatever it takes to help you relax.

Mothers with Group NEW PRAM LEGISLATION BY ALICIA DOUCH From the 1st of July this year, new pram legislation's were introduced to Australia by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The legislations were introduced following the unfortunate incidence of several injuries and deaths in Australia related to the use of prams and strollers.

'Vibe' from Phil & Teds Regardless of the type of pram you are looking for, we have it, from double prams, joggers, reverse handle, toddler seat compatible, umbrella strollers, three wheelers and much more, we are happy to have something to please everyone, after all, we all want something different.

The new legislation states that prams must have red brakes in order to increase visibility, making it easier to quickly use brakes in the case of an emergency. The other new introduction is that prams must also boast a safety tether strap, which is usually located on the handle and is slipped over the wrist of the person pushing the pram to prevent the pram getting away unexpectedly; this is especially useful if using the pram on a gradient, such as walking in hilly areas. Parents who jog whilst using their pram find tether straps also very helpful for ease of use.

If you have any questions regarding the new legislations, or wish to ask some questions about prams in general, please feel free to contact one of our friendly staff on 40454044 or perhaps drop into our store for a visit yourself to our store at 183 Bruce Hwy, Edmonton, look for the colourful building!

For an electronic copy of the Pram and Strollers safety requirements, visit www.accc.gov.au , this site gives all the details needed. Here at Juniors, we were very busy prior to July 1st to make sure all our prams came up to standard, and we have been in constant contact with our suppliers to make sure we are all doing the correct practices, after all, the safety of our next generation is of up most importance to us. We are proud to boast a great range of prams, including brands Peg Perego, Phil & Ted's, Steelcraft, Mclaren and much more. Recently we have had a couple of new prams including the 'Skate' from Peg Perego and the 'Dash' and

PaK MaG Parent LET THEM EAT CAKE BY VICTORIA WILLIAMS Sometimes it's easy to feel that we, as parents, are entirely at the mercy of our small tiny tyrants. Often we laugh to others about how it's a case of the tail wagging the dog and that the kids in the house are calling the shots. We put them at the centre of our world, allow them to develop at their own pace, try to gently distract them when they do something unpleasant (biting a friend or poking the dog in the eye) and only use the word “no” as a last resort. It's easy to feel that we are at their mercy and yet, this is not truly the case.

OK, I have to confess that this day didn't really happen but it could have! We all know what kind of day it would be if we let the kids call the shots but instead, we say no, enough, not now, be kind, do a wee, hold my hand. Without our constant admonitions, the world would be overrun with sticky fingerprints, endless re-runs of the same book, and bits of cake with the icing licked off. So next time you feel your toddler is out of control, remember how much worse it could be. And then read Goodnight Moon, just one more time.

If you think about it, most toddlers and young children do not get to do what they want, when they want. It may be tiring and repetitive but at the end of the parenting day we are the ones still standing whilst the exhausted little ones finally finish tantrumming and crash out in bed. But what would it be like if they really did get want they wanted when they wanted? Let me tell you. I spent one day allowing my toddler to do exactly as he pleased and this is how it went: Breakfast consisted of four hundred raisins, one bite of toast and whatever Daddy was eating. He then headed for nursery wearing only a nappy, his sister's fairy wings, and a pair of socks on his hands. On the way, we fed his snack to a neighbour's dog. At daycare he painted a picture, firstly on a piece of paper, then on his smock, his teacher, the walls, and the toilets. He was given all the cars, all the trucks and all the trains at playtime, leaving twelve other children to share a small stack of bricks and a headless Barbie. At lunch, where his vegetables magically disappeared and were replaced with toast and vegemite, he played the “How much pasta can I fit up my nose?” game until he choked. Quiet time consisted of four hours of the Wiggles and some scribbling on the walls. He had chocolate for tea, and at bathtime he scooped the water out onto the floor until the bath was empty. Finally I read him Goodnight Moon until my brain bled.

The Lowdown on the Beijing Olympics By Tash Reidel

All eyes will be on Beijing during this month as the Chinese finally get to show off their newfound status in the world by hosting the Olympics. Despite the controversy surrounding Tibet and the Olympic torch riots, this is one of the most exciting events on the planet and one where we get to share in the joy of our hard-working athletes who have spent years training for this moment. Even if you don't like sport (in Australia?!), why not join in the fun and use it as an excuse to use your wok and cook spring rolls on the barbie!

Interesting Facts Beijing won the right to host the Games of the XXIX Olympiad over Istanbul in Turkey, Osaka in Japan, Paris in France and Toronto in Canada. There are 28 sports on the program. BMX (Bicycle Motor Cross) has been added as a new Olympic discipline. Track cycling individual time trials have been removed and 10km open water swimming for men and women has been added. Baseball and softball were voted off the Olympic program for London 2012 so Beijing could be the last ever Olympic appearance for these sports. When the Games open there will have been 43 Test Events across all sports, 12 new venues built, 11 existing renovated and 8 temporary structures in place.

The cycling scenario has changed. The Brits have the inside running there. It's unlikely we'll be able to match the six golds we claimed last time.

The Australian team will number approximately 440 athletes with the goal of finishing in the top five nations on the medal table. Bruce McAvaney's summary of the 2008 Games: “Remarkably, Australia won a record 17 gold medals at the last Olympics eight more than we've ever won outside of Australia and one more than Sydney. At those last two Olympics, we placed fourth behind the super-powers: USA, China and Russia. Our challenge in Beijing is to try and stay in the top five. That's not going to be easy.

36 52

In Athens, we rode on the back of swimming and cycling. Those two sports supplied 13 of our 17 gold medals. The swimming team we're taking to Beijing is our strongest ever, and it'll be a surprise if we don't exceed our all-time 1956 record of eight gold medals in the pool.

www.pakmag.com.au

At this stage, we can predict that among the record-breakers will be rowing's James Tomkins, who holds three gold medals and will be at his sixth games. Grant Hackett remains one of five swimmers (if you count the 1906 games) to win the 1500m on two occasions and he's hoping to be the first to win the gruelling event for a third time.

It's a team made up of past champions - shooting's Michael Diamond and rower Drew Ginn both with two gold medals - and precocious talents, like teenage swimmer Cate Campbell and gymnast Dasha Joura, who has the potential to win our first medal in that sport. Then there's the feel good story of steeplechaser Donna MacFarlane, a champion in her youth who's returned with a vengeance after having two children and spending almost a decade away from running. Our men's hockey team, the Kookaburras, will be defending champions in Beijing. And women's basketballers, the Opals, will be keen to reinforce their world champion status after going down in the past two Olympics to archrivals, the USA.

There is nothing as exciting as the Men's 100m final. A month ago, it was a two-horse race. World record holder Asafa Powell, from Jamaica, and world champion Tyson Gay, USA, had been battling for world supremacy. Out of the blue, another Jamaican, Usain Bolt (an apt name), has appeared as a major contender, despite having raced only once over the distance before this year.

Internationally, US swimmer Michael Phelps remains a colossus. Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie has bowed out of that event because of expected pollution but he has qualified for the 10,000m and remains, on a footing with Emile Zatopek and Parvo Nurmi, the greatest distance runner of all time.

A TRIP TO....

This month William Anthony visits the Golden Hole! Golden Getaway to Golden Hole! We are so lucky to live in an area with World Heritage Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef on our door step and yet, how often do we take it for granted? We have numerous fabulous places close to the city which are perfect for a relaxing day trip and an opportunity to really get back to nature for a few hours without breaking the bank! We recently visited the Golden Hole, a stunning alternative to swimming at Josephine Falls and only about an hour from Cairns. We travelled to a section of the Russell River just south of Mirriwinni on the Bruce Highway. Golden Hole is strikingly beautiful and has enough to explore to keep the kids entertained whilst the parents are having a relaxing day away from the city. Take a picnic and esky along with you and you have the perfect recipe for a family day out with a gorgeous swimming hole to cool off in after some sunbaking. This region is very well known for its sensational turquoise waters and rapids which wash through the beautiful rainforest. This site is a definite for any family who wishes to explore our local wonders within the wet tropics.

The Calm Tranquil waters at the Golden Hole swimming site. The turn off is about 200 metres south of Mirriwinni. Drive west following the signs to Josephine Falls/Golden Hole. Take the left turn to Golden Hole and park there. Drag or carry on up across the grass field furthest away from the river to find a walking track into the forest. A 40 min walk crossing several creeks brings you to the river. However, if these directions are a bit vague and you aren't very familiar with the area, a map can be found at www.greattropicaldrive.com.au/PDF/Trail_6.pdf So, for a day to remember and to forget about your worries, visit this stunning location in our very own backyard. View of the Golden Hole swimming site, looking upstream. Also at Golden Hole, there is a rope swing which will keep the kids amused for hours. If they are too young for the swing, you can instead, bring some old bread to feed to the numerous fish which come out from hidey holes to inspect the thoughtful visitors. For families who own dogs, the location has a very large grassy area which is perfect to throw a bone or ball for your pets to fetch and then to cool off, have a quick dip!

Pet Tips & Hints Oh Rats! BY CHRISTINE SMOLDER I had many pets growing up, ranging from the usual kids' storybook variety to the not-so-usual lizards and hermit crabs. And while I had also taken care of my share of rodents like hamsters and guinea pigs, I had never considered owning a rat. Not that rats disgusted me. I just never thought as them as pets until I met someone who had one. Our friends told us that in addition to being compact, rats were smart, fun and relatively easy to take care of. I thought a pet would be good for the kids, and so we got one. It was such a hit that we soon decided to get her a friend and so we have now had Charlotte and Gracie for almost two years.

The Myths Rats are dirty.

Rats are ugly.

Rats are mean.

Rats are destructive. There are only two drawbacks to owning rats: 1) they have very short life spans2 to 5 years and 2) most people regard them with utter revulsion. This became apparent to me when last year when we were planning a trip overseas and found it difficult finding someone to look after them. Many of our friends grimaced at the thought of looking after our rats but didn't think twice about owning hamsters. I don't see how rats are that different so I'd like to take this opportunity to bust some common myths:

Rats smell.

The Facts Rats are no dirtier than any other pet as long as you clean up after them on a regular basis. We clean our rats’ cage twice a week. Ok-so their tails aren’t the envy of the animal kingdom, but look at their faces and the way they use their little hands! Rats that are handled gently and frequently will eagerly come to you and will never bite. Yes, they are! But only if they are allowed to roam freely around the house unsupervised, which I do not, of course, recommend. Well, maybe a little-but no more than a dog or a cat. If their cage is kept clean they will not stink up the house.

Rats are easy to take care of and inexpensive to keep. They are also smart. Our rats are always happy to see us, they come to us, hang out on our shoulders and sit up for food.

Bring on the Birdies! The PaK MaG Bird Feeder! With spring finally upon us, the birds are chirping and the sun is shining‌..well most of the time! This month we bring to you, "How to make your very own Bird Feeder!" It's a nice and easy design and can be completed by all ages‌ with help from mum and dad of course. What you need: 1.

Empty 2L or 3L plastic milk container with lid. (A juice container can be used as an alternative)

2.

Wire - pliable and only about 1m of wire in total

3.

Wooden dowel rods - about 1/2 inch dowel, 30cm long (straight branch can be used as a alternative)

4.

Rope - to hang the milk container from the tree

By William Anthony

milk container so that the dowel can be pushed through snuggly. Step 3 To hang the container, you need to put the wire through the top of the milk container, near the lid. Use the nail to make the hole and then push the wire through and make a loop for the rope go through. This will ensure a strong hold. All you need to do now is add some bird seeds and find a nice tree or spot to hang it on. You can also paint the milk carton to make it look a little prettier. It may take a little while for the birds to realize what it is but when they do, you'll be amazed at all the different birds around FNQ!

Tools you will need: 1.

Marker pen

2.

Box cutter/Stanley knife

3.

Nail or large needle

Step 1 Wash and rinse the container so that there is no milk or residue left in it. If you need to, soak in hot water. Once cleaned, leave the lid and container to dry. Now with the marker pen, draw the doorways on the side of the milk container so that when you insert the dowel, it is centered in the middle of the doorways. Make sure that the doorway is not too close to the bottom of the container. It should be at least 8cm from the bottom of the milk container. Step 2 With the Stanley knife, make a cut in the centre of the marked doorway so that you can use scissors to cut out the door. When inserting the dowel, you don't want the holes to be too big. Make a small 'X' cut on opposite sides of the

Restaurant Review Driftaways on the Water - Yorkeys Knob Boating Club The best thing about the restaurant at Yorkeys Knob Boating Club is the location. As you enter through the bar area you can't help but notice the fantastic views from the huge wraparound deck across the marina and over to the beaches. I always find there's something very relaxing about the sight of white yachts and a sunset (even with a 2 year old toddler in tow!). Now, I have to confess that I'm not overly keen on going out to dinner with our daughter, since we spend so much time keeping her in check that you hardly notice anything else so it seems like a waste of money. However, Driftaways is the perfect family restaurant. Firstly, the staff seem to actually like children and greeted her as a very welcome guest. Secondly, there is lots of space between the tables so you don't feel as they you're encroaching upon other diners. Nobody seemed to even notice as she flung her ice cream around and swung on her high chair in various positions whilst shouting at the waiting staff. She had a ball and everybody was happy to let her get on with it.

By Elaine Seager

The menu is simple Australian fare with breads, oysters and 3-4 other options such as seafood tempura for entrees ($7-12). The mains include steaks, fish and pasta dishes to a curry, schnitzel and kangaroo. There are also a couple of vegetarian dishes. We chose grilled fish of the day (bomfret) which came with a lovely fresh salad and chips and lamb shanks with sweet potato mash, both of which were delicious. The main courses ranged in price from $18-32. Zoe chose fish fingers and chips off the kids menu which offers great value at $8.50 since it includes a free soft drink and ice cream. We shared a crème brulee for dessert which was yummy. The service was quick and attentive - great when you've got kids and overall the experience offered easy casual dining in a great location. Great for dinner or why not go for lunch before going to the beach for the afternoon.

Movie Review - Movie Review - Movie Review What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? Academy Award®-winning writer-director Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo”) and the inventive storytellers and technical geniuses at Pixar Animation Studios (“The Incredibles,” “Cars,” “Ratatouille”) transport moviegoers to a galaxy not so very far away for a new computer-animated cosmic comedy about a determined robot named WALLE. After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALLE (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALLE has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Meanwhile, WALLE chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen. Joining WALLE on his fantastic journey across a universe of never-before-imagined visions of the future, is a hilarious cast of characters including a pet cockroach, and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots. Filled with surprises, action, humor and heart, WALLE was written and directed by Andrew Stanton, produced by Jim Morris, co-produced by Lindsey Collins and features original and innovative sound design by Academy Award®-winner Ben Burtt (“Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”).

TIME FOR A LAUGH Mother: Come on John you have to get out of bed or you'll be late for school. John: Ahh mum do I have to, all the teachers hate me, and all the students hate me too. Mother: Yes you do.

This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

John: Give me a good reason Mother: You're 44 and your the Principal! There were 3 little alien dudes in a little green space ship. All the sudden they crashed on earth. The first little dude was purple, the second green and third blue. The little purple dude walked into an opera house and heard “ mi,mi,mi” “ mi,mi,mi” and got stuck saying “ mi,mi,mi” “ mi,mi,mi”. The little green dude walked into the purple cow and heard “ fork & knife” “ fork & knife” and got stuck saying “ fork & knife” “fork & knife”. The little purple dude walked into a candy shop and heard “goody goody gum drops” “ goody goody gum drops” and got stuck saying “ goody

He immediately phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" and George said no and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available. George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all."

gum drops” “ goody goody gum drops”. On the way back to the space ship a policeman stopped them and said, “There has been a murder and, since you are new to this town, I think you did it. Okay! Let's get this straight. Which one of you did it?”

Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

The little purple dude said “ mi,mi,mi” and the policeman said “With what?” and the little green dude said “ fork & knife”.

One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

The policeman said, “ I'm sorry but you're going to jail."

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!”

The little blue dude said, “goody goody gum drops!” Two kids are talking to each other. One says, "I'm really worried. My dad works twelve hours a day to give me a nice home and good food. My mom spends the whole day cleaning and cooking for me. I'm worried sick!" The other kid says, "What have you got to worry about? Sounds to me like you've got it made!" The first kid says, "What if they try to escape?"
