FEATURE
TEACHING YOUR KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF
Giving
Story Jenna Gallina
The greatest gifts are the ones that you give. But, most children don’t seem to see it this way. Teaching your child about social awareness and giving back will help them grow to be empathetic, compassionate and caring. Research from the Greater Good Science Centre tells us that gratitude actually blocks toxic emotions and allows us to celebrate the present. What’s more, grateful people are more stress-resistant and have a higher sense of self-worth.
The importance of giving is a tough lesson for parents to teach and a tough lesson for children to learn. Here are a few activities that may help: READ ALL ABOUT IT
PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL DONATION DRIVES
One of my kid’s favourites is the Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmes. Another cute one is The Poky Little Puppy’s First Christmas. After you read the story, talk about what has happened and what the main message is.
It’s so much easier to simply buy the raffle tickets or the chocolate bars your children are selling for their school fundraiser. But don’t do it. Instead, walk around the street with them and help them practice their sales speech. This not only harnesses the importance of giving but also boosts their confidence.
WRITE LETTERS Spend some time writing and delivering letters to those in the community who would appreciate a hand-written card. VOLUNTEER Participate in the working bees at the school, get involved in a community project or visit those who are less fortunate. DONATE TOYS AND CLOTHING Ask your children to choose what items to give to Vinnies or another charity. It can be difficult for them to part with certain items but this is such a big step to teaching them the importance of giving. ADOPT A PET If you are looking into getting a pet, go to the RSPCA or a similar shelter. If you are not ready for a pet, then ask to see if there are any opportunities to volunteer with the kids.
8
NOVEMBER 2015 www.pakmag.com.au
PLANT TREES IN A COMMUNITY GARDEN Trees are an important part of the ecosystem, and planting one makes a difference in your community for years to come. Make a point of planting trees with your kids and explaining the integral role those trees play in the ecosystem. GET THEM INVOLVED IN HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTION For younger children, start them on the path to kindness by asking them to pass out cake, cookies and other sweets when guests are over. Teaching them to give the guests their plate first is a simple tactic used to explain the concept of sharing and giving. MAKE GIFT GIVING LISTS Rather than focus on letters to Santa, ask your children to write three lists – one list of items they would like to receive, one list of items they would like to give to family members and one list of items they would like to give to those less fortunate.
START A KINDNESS CHART
BAKE YOUR APPRECIATION
Track your children’s kindness by getting them to record one act of kindness they do once a day. This could be setting the table, letting their little sister choose the television program or helping to feed the pet.
Spend the afternoon baking biscuits with the kids. Rather than eat them up (or freeze them for school snacks), put them in small jars or wrap them in cellophane and give them to neighbours, teachers and others that deserve to be thanked.
ENCOURAGE SHARING & LISTENING AT THE DINNER TABLE Make it a habit of sitting down as a family and everyone sharing a story, a joke, the best and worst part of their day, or anything they want to discuss. Take turns going around the table and stress the importance of listening to each other. CREATE A GRATITUDE SCRAPBOOK Give your children your camera or smart phone and ask them to take photos of the various things they are grateful for around the house. Print out the photos and paste them into a scrapbook. USE STICKY NOTES Leave sticky notes for each family member to thank them for something you appreciate. MAKE A GRATITUDE VIDEO If you have little performers in the house, then they probably already love the camera. Make a thankyou video for someone who has showed kindness or done something nice for your children.
KEEP THE END GOAL IN MIND If the phrase “I want one!” is a common one in your household, then know that you are not alone. Children’s worlds are naturally all about them and it takes time for children to understand that other people matter too. It can be so frustrating (and slightly embarrassing) trying to teach a child about empathy and kindness but be patient. Try to see it from your child’s perspective - it can be extremely difficult to understand the feelings that often come with watching someone else receive a gift – anger, jealousy, sadness, frustration. Try not to be too hard on your children if they get upset. Little steps around the house will encourage kindness and help them understand just how important giving and gratitude is for a healthy, happy life.

Tips
FOR MASTERING
MATHS STORY Rebecca Harris, Catholic Education Cairns
Maths is everywhere. We use it every day, even if we don’t realise it. Mathematics helps us to understand and describe our world, solve everyday problems, make predictions, develop our abstract reasoning and make better decisions. But, for many kids, a love of maths doesn’t come naturally. Or easily. Helping your child learn to love maths starts at home. Here is what you can do: Promote a sense of relevance and interest in mathematics. Make connections between math and everyday life which encourages them to want to use maths. Taking part in everyday activities like going to the shops, cooking, or even setting the table can help your child with maths. Getting dressed and learning to take turns when playing a game all help your child to understand patterns and shapes, measuring and sorting. Bring maths into your daily reading routine. Reading to children is a treasured activity. What better way to integrate mathematics into the lives of children than to read them stories that bring mathematical ideas to life? Children’s books related to mathematics can be separated into four categories: counting books, number books, storybooks and concept books. Some good ones to consider are Alfie’s Number by Shirley Hughes, One, Two Buckle My Shoe by Melissa Everett, Sorting Through by Spring-Lizann Flatt and What’s a Fraction by Nancy Kelly Allen. Connect play time with maths. There are plenty of board games and card games that can help encourage maths but you can also incorporate math lessons in other ways as well. Play ‘shop’ and count out money. Play ‘builder’ and measure various items around the house. Children need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. Make connections for your child by explaining how numbers and counting are a part of everyday life.
Think outside the traditional maths lessons. You may feel that the maths your child is doing at school is different from how you were taught, but you will still be able to support your child in many ways and encourage your child with other ways to solve maths problems. Giving your child more than one way to solve a problem is highly beneficial to their learning. After all, there is always more than one way to get the right answer. Encourage them to problem solve. Problem solving is about engaging with real problems - guessing, discovering, and making sense of mathematics. It is about developing young mathematicians who have an 'understanding of the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject'. You can help them build their problem solving skills without them even realising it. Encourage them to ask questions, to analyse the information they have been given and to look at the various ways to solve the problem. Focus on their individual journey. Like reading and writing, maths is something that we are constantly learning and consistently using. Maths today is about understanding number patterns, not learning by repetition. Avoid comparing your own maths skills with that of your child’s. Saying things like "I was bad as maths too" is one of the worst things you can do as it lowers their own expectations of themselves.

Master of Motocross STORY Jenna Gallina Most nine year olds are happy to spend their weekends at home playing with mates, attending birthday parties and helping Mum and Dad with the chores. But for Cairns motocross rider, Braden Plath, weekends are often spent racing his 50cc or 65cc KTM at speeds up to 65 kilometres an hour and flying over 20 metre jumps. And, for Braden and the entire Plath family, they wouldn’t have it any other way. Braden joined the Cairns Motorcycle Club three years ago when he was six years old after watching the Crusty Demons. Since then he has taken home a number of titles including 2nd in the National Junior MX Titles in 2014, 1st in the TNQ Titles in 2014, 1st in the Queensland State Titles in 2015 and 1st in the TNQ Titles in 2015. Recently Braden and his family, including mum Lea, dad Damian and

brothers Matthew, 11 and Riley, 6, travelled to Bunbury, WA for Braden to compete in the Australian Titles where our local superstar placed 4th. In addition to competing in motocross events across the state and even the country six months of the year, Braden also enjoys wakeboarding and playing FUTSAL. Braden’s brothers also participate in sport and Lea and Damian own a local business as well. For the Plath family, being busy is the norm. The family often spend the weekends on the road travelling to Mareeba, Tully, Ravenshoe and beyond for races. “It is very family orientated,” Lea explains. “We spend weekends camping for events and at the end for the race, we sit back and relax with the other families.” Braden receives assistance from a number of local companies including Ray White Real Estate, Parramatta Service Centre and Wayne Leonards Motorcycles. There is a lot of safety gear including clothes, boots, neck braces, knee braces, helmets, goggles and gloves. Braden rides both a 50cc and 65cc KTM and usually trains at least once or twice a week during the race season. So what drives Braden’s passion for motocross? “You get to go really fast!” he tells PakMag excitedly. And while he has
taken a few spills, the sport definitely comes with excitement and its share of ups and downs. The young daredevil reaches intense speeds of 65 kilometres an hour on his bike. Yes, it may take a village of support in terms of mechanics, logistics and equipment, but it’s all too clear from watching Braden’s eyes light up when he talks about motocross, that it is more than worth it. “I would highly recommend it,” Lea adds. “It may not just be a sport; it’s a lifestyle. But it’s a fun one at that.” For anyone with children interested in motocross, the Cairns Motorcycle Club is your first stop. It has been in operation for over 10 years and the club hosts races throughout the year at its Edmonton track as well as other locations in the Far North area. You can find our more through the Cairns MX Club Facebook Page or email cairnsmx@gmail.com.

PARENTING

PREPARING FOR PREP STORY Jenna Mottin
For some parents the new year ahead marks the beginning of their child’s journey into formal education. While Prep is not compulsory in Queensland, enrolment rates are as high as 98%. With the change in the Australian Curriculum parents and teachers have seen Prep evolve from a flexible play-based style of teaching to more formal curriculum focused program. Parents of children who have gone through the current Prep program have reported that Prep has become what grade one used to be which can understandably leave some parents apprehensive and asking: ‘Is my child prepared for Prep?’
Y
our child’s readiness for schooling is something only you can be the judge of, however the tasks listed below are a good baseline indication of preparedness:
SOME OF THESE TASKS INCLUDE: • tying shoelaces • putting on their own sunscreen • carrying their school bags into the classroom and putting lunches and drink bottles into designated areas • saying good morning to adults • asking for help • asking to go to the toilet Other things that we assume our children know however they most likely do not, is taking turns to speak and waiting their turn instead of interrupting. You know the scenario: you and your friend are trying to have a conversation about something of high importance but you find yourself constantly interrupted by your little loved ones. Sound familiar? Well, imagine how hard it must be for the teacher to be trying to discuss things with the class only to be interrupted by numerous little ones who haven’t yet learned the social skill of waiting their turns. So how can you help instil this ready for Prep? Play board games or easy card games like “fish” or “snap” in which the children must learn to wait for their turn. Verbally praise them for “good waiting!” In conversation explain that they must wait their turn, just like when they are playing their games, and, similarly, praise them when they do remember to wait their turn. Their teachers will LOVE you for it! What about their speech? Dr Peter
Flipsen Jr, an American Speech Pathologist stated that by four years of age your child’s speech should be completely intelligible to strangers. This can be tricky for parents because often they are tuned-in to their own child and can understand everything that he or she says. If you are unsure about their speech, be aware of adults reactions when your child speaks – do they turn to you to ask for clarification? That may be an indicator that their speech is delayed. If you are in doubt or have any concerns about your child’s speech and sound development, see a speech pathologist for an assessment. Research shows that children’s oral language skills are strongly linked to academic success, especially reading abilities. More specifically, research by Scarborough in 2001 found that preschool children with strong understanding of word meanings tended to have better listening comprehension, word recognition and reading comprehension in the later primary years. This makes sense because to do well at school you need to have good listening, attention and vocabulary so you can understand what the teacher is saying to you and students need to be able to speak in well-formed sentences before they are able to write well-formed sentences. Apart from the close relationship between oral language and reading, Given almost all classroom-based learning depends on oral language, helping children develop mastery in this area is important for their overall academic success.
SKILLS CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE BY AGE 5: PLAY AND SOCIAL SKILLS • Can communicate with a variety of people and makes friends easily. • Engages in complex imaginary games with simple rules. • Knows how to join in and start conversations and interactions appropriately.
LISTENING AND UNDERSTANDING • Follows 3 step instructions eg: “get your pencils, put them in the tidy tray and then line up near the door”. • Follows instructions that include the words ‘first’, ‘last’, ‘before’ and ‘after’ • Understands humour and age appropriate jokes.
SPEAKING • Has an extensive vocabulary and can express ideas clearly. • Can speak clearly with any unfamiliar listener with very few minor speech immaturities remaining e.g. says thumb as “fum”. • Tells stories or gives a morning talk without any help. • Has a long and detailed conversation with a variety of people on a variety of topics. • Can explain why something happened and consider some solutions to problems.

INTERVIEW
Meet
Caro and Kingi
They’ve been described as the Brawn and Brains, and Townsville residents Caroline and Kingi have been taking Australia by storm, one brick at a time on the 11th season of The Block. PakMag was lucky enough to sit down with Kingi, a renderer, and Caro, a business development manager, motivator and triathlete, to discuss what’s on the horizon after The Block. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY:
The best way to describe our family would be easygoing and laid back. I would say we are a very loud family as well! Always laughing and we are all very talkative including our three year old, Halia who never shuts up...I wonder who she gets that from! WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT IN PARENTING SO FAR?
There are too many moments to choose from! I think the best moments with her happen every day. I love it when I catch her with her friends at daycare and she doesn’t know I'm there watching her. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN?
We all have the same 24 hours... you decide how you use them. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR THE BLOCK?
Sitting down watching The Block like most Australian families do I thought we could do this! So I thought I might as well apply online without telling Kingi thinking we would never get the call and we did!! So honoured that we got chosen out of so many other applicants! It was the hardest thing that we have done but also the most fun we have ever had. It was such an emotional roller coaster ride but we are very happy with our end result. We just hope we make Townsville and North Queensland proud and we all have a few laughs along the way! ANY EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES ON THE HORIZON?

Complete with a central parkland, bike paths, Sunday Yoga sessions and surrounded by 3 of Townsville’s best parks, it will be a great asset for the City. There’s even before & after school care at the PCYC located within 500metres of Haven so its awesome for families wanting to live near town. We want to show this beautiful city to Australia. Haven is a good fit for us as it fits with our philosophy on life. We are proud of living here in Townsville and hope to bring a lot more attention to the area by being on the show.

+ BRUSHING TEETH TIPS Did you know that a child requires assistance with teeth brushing until the age of 7? My five-year-old and threeyear-old would beg to differ. However, tooth decay is a very serious and very common problem across Australia.
+ Be Skin Care Aware
Nearly half of all six-year-olds experience decay in their baby teeth, according to a recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report. And an alarming 57 per cent of Australians are expected to develop tooth decay.
The heat is on, the sun is out and it’s time to slip, slop, slap, especially with National Skin Cancer Awareness Week taking place 15th November to 21st November.
IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME BRUSHING YOUR CHILD’S TEETH, HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO TRY:
With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, all parents need to not only protect themselves from the sun, but their little ones as well. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said sunburn was a sign that skin had been significantly damaged. “In Queensland, even on cooler and cloudier winter days when temperatures are lower, sunburn can still occur in as little as 15 minutes,” Ms Clift said. “Young Queenslanders need to be more vigilant about staying SunSmart whenever they spend time outdoors – at the beach, the footy, by the pool and at backyard BBQs around this time of year. BEING SUN SAFE TAKES FIVE STEPS
• Experiment with various flavours of toothpaste. Having a different flavour to choose each day can keep the routine interesting. • Have a timer set up so they know how long to brush for. • Try brushing their teeth on the bed. Having them lay down can make it easier to reach those back teeth. • Sing a song while brushing their teeth. HEALTHIER PREGNANCY So, you’re pregnant? Congratulations! Being pregnant is one of the most special times in your life. You are also probably finding yourself thinking more and more about your health and the health of your unborn child. With the abundance of information available these days, it can be confusing. Firstly, you need to understand what being “healthy” is. Most people think that when you feel ok and can get through your day without feeling unwell, you are healthy. True health is actually determined by your body’s ability to adapt successfully to the stresses of life. Being pregnant puts your body under a great deal of stress, so it is important to support your body and your unborn child with healthy lifestyle choices. These are my top five tips for a healthier pregnancy. 1. HAVE YOUR SPINE ASSESSED Seeing a chiropractor while you are pregnant (and planning to be) is my number one tip for a healthier pregnancy. Chiropractors concentrate on your spine so your nervous system is working the best it can, leading to your whole body working optimally. Women tend to accept that the discomfort and pain you feel while pregnant is just something you have to put up with. This is not true. Through chiropractic care, the body is able to better adapt to the stresses of pregnancy, allowing you to feel more comfortable. Also, when your pelvis is in alignment, there will be more room for your body to move and grow. 2. DECREASE STRESS Emotional stress negatively impacts on your health whether you are pregnant or not. When you are stressed there is a cascade of hormonal changes that occur which changes the environment of your body. When you are in a stressed state, your body is not concentrating on growth and healing – which is exactly what you want your body to focus on when you are pregnant. To bring your body out of a stressed state, five deep breaths concentrating on pushing your tummy out or just five minutes of meditation a day are simple and effective ways to bring your body back into a state supportive of growth and healing. 3. STAY ACTIVE While you are pregnant, it is important you continue to exercise regularly. Even though your body is changing, and you may not be able to do as much as you are used to doing, you must remember that you do need to have a notable level of fitness for birthing your baby and then recovering afterwards. Choose exercises that will not affect your centre of gravity such as walking, swimming or riding a stationary bike. Yoga is also a great option as it allows you to both stretch and strengthen your joints and muscles. 4. EAT SEASONAL, LOCAL, ORGANIC AND WHOLE FOODS As you are probably aware by now, the food you put in your mouth directly affects your health. What supplements you choose to take is very specific to your needs and should be discussed with your personal health care practitioner. Generally speaking, to eat SLOW (Seasonal, Local, Organic and Whole) is the way to go. You want to make sure you are fuelling your body to cope with the stress and changes of pregnancy, and you also want to make sure that the fuel your baby is using to grow is as best as you can provide. 5. REST AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Rest is vital for a healthy pregnancy. It is important to rest as much as you feel you need to right from day one, don’t wait until you have a big belly to justify the rest you crave. Every time you allow yourself to rest by sitting or lying down, you are increasing the amount of blood flowing to your baby, giving it the nutrients it needs. You will probably find yourself most comfortable lying on your side with pillows supporting you from the back and front.

SIMPLE WAYS (JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS) Wouldn’t it be great if you had an extra few hundred dollars given to you for the holiday season? Take money matters into your own hands with these simple ways to save and make money.
AROUND THE HOUSE
1. Start a loose change jar - At
the end of each week, everyone in the household dumps their loose change from their wallets, pockets and purses into the jar. Make this your “fun jar.”
2. Start a weekly saving box -
We did this last year and it worked wonderfully – for each week of the year, add that amount in dollars to their savings box. For example, week one, add one dollar, week 30, add 30 dollars and week 52, add 52 dollars. In one year, you will have a grand total of $1729!
3. Get visual – Keep track of
your spending with spreadsheets, planners, vision boards or anything else that works for you.
4. Divvy up the money – For
some families, using envelopes and divvying up the funds to keep track of each expense can help ensure you do not go over each month.
5. Use the 30-day rule – Avoid IN THE KITCHEN
Story Jenna Gallina impulse buys by sticking to the 30-day spending rule. If you see something you love, give it a month. If you still need it one month later, then buy it. More likely than not, the impulse to buy the item will be gone by the end of the month.

you spend money on something indulgent, from a new pair of shoes to a coffee, add the same amount to a savings jar.
7. Be energy efficient – Turn

shopping isn’t for everyone but you can find some amazing deals on clothing, toys and other household items.
11. Make your own cleaning 12. Swap babysitting with
neighbours – Babysitters are a killer when it comes to your budget. Start a neighbourhood babysitting system where you rotate with the other parents on your street.
8. Start your own garden – This
will cut down on the costs of some of your fruits and veggies.
9. Declutter – This helps you find
items that you thought you have lost and ensures you are not buying items you don’t need.
13. Stay away from takeaway –
It’s hard, I know... but reducing your weekly reliance on takeaway can save you $200 or more per month!
14. Freezer cook – Meal planning and freezer cooking is one of the easiest ways to save money on groceries and takeaway as well as save time in the kitchen.
15. Ditch one luxury each month
– Swap your monthly hair appointments to every second month. Spread out your weekly spray tan to once every month.
16. Go Meat-free on Mondays – Plan a weekly meal that doesn’t
involve meat. We spend about $10
on meat per family meal so swapping for more affordable veggies, lentils or beans can help.
17. Make lunches in advance – Pack all lunches the night before in case you wake up late. This avoids visits to the local café, pie van and tuck shop for the kids.

Bali
BLISS STORY Bree James They call it the island of the gods, and for good reason. There is no other place quite like it. There is a special vibe, an authentic essence that touches and inspires visitors from all over the world. The flight is only around 4.5 hours, and with non-stop Jetstar flights to Bali (Denpasar) from Cairns, there's no reason not to go. Bali would have to be one of the closest, most affordable destinations outside of Australia. If you love shopping for clothes, jewellery, unique wooden and artistic items, listening to live music, and indulging in yummy food and drinks, massages, pedicures and manicures all at amazing prices, then Bali is definitely a place you should visit. As soon as you hop off the plane and get through customs the tone of the holiday begins. You have people wanting to carry your bags, offer you transport and book you on tours.
TOP TRAVEL TIPS
Do not drink anything with Arak as an ingredient.
Hire a Nanny. The kids loved doing the crafts with our nanny and were well looked after. It is a minimum five hours, and prices are approx $5 per hour. We used Bali Nannies Bali http://balinanniesbali.blogspot.com
Getting in and out of the country. Be prepared to pay US $35 per person (inc children) for when you arrive at the customs desk. You only need to fill in one customs entry form per family. To exit the country the departure tax has now been abolished. Have your passport in a safe place ready at all times as there are four security checks.
Take your washing to one of the many laundries to get washed, pressed and folded for about $2 per kilo of washing. Spend smart. Book your tours as you go. This saves money if you are not up for it on the day. Shopping options include The Krisna shops is the cheapest place to buy traditional Balinese items and souvenirs. The Matahari is great for the Myer experience of Bali. There are also many quality designer clothes shops. These shops do not allow bartering so save your bartering skills for the markets where you should be able to get the locals down to one third of their original price. Knowing a little bit of Bahasa (Indonesian) will often get you a better price. To avoid Bali belly and getting ill, do not use the tap water to clean your teeth or to drink. Most hotels supply complementary bottled water. Eat cooked foods as much as possible.

Injecting COLOUR into Your Lounge Room Your lounge room is probably one of the most-used areas in the house. It should be a place where you can feel comfortable and unwind after a long day. Pastels are one of the hottest trends this season, but whatever colour scheme and dĂŠcor you choose, here are some tips to ensure the perfect blend of comfort and style with minimal clutter. Consider the 60-30-10 Rule When decorating a particular room, try to stick to 60 per cent of a dominant colour, 30 per cent of a secondary colour and 10 per cent of an accent colour. Often your accent colour comes from the accessories that you choose. Accessorise with things like lamps, throws, rugs, pillows, candles, wall hangings, and indoor plant holders. A few bright pillows can add a splash of colour and freshness to any living space. Know the Colour Schemes Essentially there are two main types of colour schemes: complementary and analogous. Complementary colours are across from each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange and are typically reserved for formal living areas.
Nice Cushy Cushion Typo (RRP $24.99)
Abbeville Stoneware Coasters Early Settler (RRP $19.00)
Analogous colour schemes are next to each other on the colour wheel, such as yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange and are best for casual family rooms and dens. Understand Colour Codes
A3 Abstract Art Print Etsy Store: AMMIKI (RRP $40.00)
We may not even notice but certain colours are associated with particular emotions, seasons and feelings. Blues and browns tend to be associated with a more restful feel while reds and yellows are associated with a lively living space. Colours are often also associated with the season – autumn colours such as mustard yellows, russets and browns will create a calm and subdued space, perfect for resting. Spring colours, on the other hand, are more uplifting; pinks, lilac and saffron yellow create an innocent, fresh look to a room.
