BACKGROUND / FAMILY_ I am married to my soul mate who I have been with since I was 16 years old. He is my other half, he gets me and I get him. He is one of the most beautiful souls I have ever come across and I am so grateful to have him as my husband. My daughter Maya is a gorgeous little girl with a heart of gold. Life is a joy for her and she is so much fun to be around. Texas is my little champ. He has this infectious cheeky smile that no one can walk past. My mentors in life are my family. It sounds a bit cliché but it’s true. My mum is an amazing business woman who has this innate ability to connect with anyone. She is someone that would give a stranger a hug if they needed it and she is truly a beautiful human being. My Dad is one of the most innovative and courageous men I have ever met. If he has something in his head it just happens. Hell or high water, if he wants it, he gets it! He is truly an inspiration. They believe in me and always have. I am so blessed to have them as my parents. WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING / FB PAGE / WEBSITE_ Unfortunately in our society not all people have a good network around them. Our 'old style' village no longer exists. I wanted to create a space where people could feel safe to ask all sorts of questions - judgement free.

SOME QUESTIONS MAY SOUND "OUT THERE" OR "SILLY" TO SOME BUT WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE_ We have all been in situations in our lives we are not proud of or may not want to share with anyone for fear of being judged. So The Imperfect Mum is especially designed for that very reason. As they say "you cannot know someone or judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes." The Imperfect Mum is a place where all woman are accepted and encouraged to be the best they could possibly be - judgement free. ADVICE TO MUMS WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A “MUMMY BLOGGER”_ I think the biggest advice I could give would be to be yourself, don't compare yourself or your blog to others. Your blog is your story, no-one else’s. HIGHS / LOWS OF SHARING SO MUCH OF YOURSELF ONLINE_ I'm a very open person so I don't really mind sharing myself. But it is upsetting when people have a go at the way you choose to raise your kids. The upside is I've made so many new friends and I receive beautiful messages every week about how the Imperfect Mum has helped people so that in itself outweighs anything bad. SOMETHING NOT MANY PEOPLE WILL KNOW ABOUT YOU_ I honestly can't think of anything - ha ha!

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING / FB PAGE / WEBSITE?_ I started my blog because there are many people struggling with health issues and food intolerances who don’t know where to begin with changing their diet. Thanks to my mum teaching me to cook with whatever ingredients were on hand, I enjoy making up recipes and finding ways to meet diet challenges. I began sharing my recipes, tips, and meal plans on my blog in December 2008, and started my Facebook page in October 2012. ADVICE TO MUMS WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A “MUMMY BLOGGER”_ If you work hard at sharing good content and lovely photos, be positive and friendly, and connect with your readers, your blog will do well. If you’re only in it for the money, forget it - no one likes blogs that are all about advertising. Share what you love, and don’t just follow the crowd - be yourself. HIGHS / LOWS OF SHARING SO MUCH OF YOURSELF ONLINE_ I have met so many amazing people through my blog that I may never have met otherwise. I love sharing my stories and hearing theirs. However, I am careful not to overshare, as I don’t want my family to feel they have no privacy. SOMETHING NOT MANY PEOPLE WILL KNOW ABOUT YOU_ My love for cooking started at a young age. When I was seven years old I won second prize at the Cairns show for my chocolate fudge. Making sweets and cakes was always my forte, and you’ll still find lots of sweet treats on my blog, but nowadays they are all naturally sweetened and made from wholefood ingredients.
BACKGROUND / FAMILY_ I have three passions in life... family, food and magazines. I am fortunate enough to be living my passions. My husband Cambell and I have two delightful, yet extremely independent daughters; Claudia (5) and Heidi (3). At work, which is home, I am a hard working and driven visionary with gluten free world domination on my mind. My nearest and dearest will tell you that I am a constant wave of new business ideas and visions, sometimes driving them mad. In the last six years my publishing company has launched and delivered a national parenting lifestyle magazine, helped others self-publish and launched yum. gluten free magazine and cookbook. WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING / FB PAGE / WEBSITE?_ Initially I was diagnosed with Coeliacs Disease after the birth of my second daughter. I then went on to find out that I was lactose intolerant, had a thyroid disease called Hasimotos and also anaphylaxis to preservatives from 220-230. Originally I looked upon all of this as a negative, but soon found my new gluten free way of life to be the catalyst for positive things including my popular blog, Mrs Gluten Free, which was a portal to share recipes and products with other like-minded people. I realised that Australians were crying out for gluten free information and recipes. Within six months we launched the first issue of yum. gluten free magazine (a digital publication) and now have over 37,000 fans on Facebook. ADVICE TO MUMS WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A “MUMMY BLOGGER”_ Know your product, treat it like a business and respect others. Work hard, play nice. HIGHS / LOWS OF SHARING SO MUCH OF YOURSELF ONLINE_ At first people’s comments affected me but now I keep my posts and blogs clean and conversational rather than opinionated. This helps curve any negative comments. SOMETHING NOT MANY PEOPLE WILL KNOW ABOUT YOU_ I’m a pretty open book - what you see is what you get, so probably not!

BACKGROUND / FAMILY_ I’ve lived in Far North Queensland for most of my life and love it here. I grew up in Cairns, moved to the Tablelands when I was 18, went to uni in Townsville to study art, then worked as a graphic artist. After getting married and having four kids, I began to have health problems and had to change my diet. This led to an interest in cooking for food intolerances and using wholefood ingredients. I became a Thermomix consultant five years ago so that I could learn more about cooking this way and could teach others.

Sam offers easy to implement strategies and provides templates that can be utilised on a daily basis for business owners and entrepreneurs looking to make the most of their time and achieve goals, meet deadlines and plan for the future. NEW APP AIMS TO MAXIMISE TA X R E T U R N S A recent survey has found that almost 80% of Australians don’t fully understand what they are entitled to claim and are therefore paying too much tax. With the cost of living continuing to rise, no one can afford to leave money in the taxman’s pocket. Reasons why families don’t receive their full tax refund: • LOSING RECEIPTS_ 49% of Australians don’t keep receipts for tax deductions • NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO CLAIM_ only 18% fully understand what they can claim • COMPLICATED TAXATION SYSTEM_ Australia’s tax system is complex and 36% of Australians just claim the $300 limit because it is the easiest and quickest way This easy to use app allows you to photograph your receipt, record the details then file in the appropriate tax category until the following 30 June. IS YOUR CHILD FA L L I N G B E H I N D ? WITH MANY OF US BUSY PACKING LUNCHES, GETTING THE KIDS TO SCHOOL ON TIME, DEALING WITH WORK STRESS AND RUNNING HOUSEHOLDS, PARENTS CAN OFTEN OVERLOOK AND MISREAD KEY SIGNS ABOUT OUR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION.
It’s normal for children to struggle with school work occasionally, however when they start to fall further behind, they will need help getting back up to speed. It can be a stressful time in a child’s life and there are a number of emotional behavioural responses they tend to demonstrate if they do fall behind or feel that they are not doing as well as they want to.
From changes in personality to refusing to attempt simple tasks, the signs can vary drastically. They may include: • A change in their enjoyment levels when reading, going to school or completing homework and/or assignments • Change in behaviour: children acting out, becoming defensive or being
naughty when asked to complete homework; any behaviour that tries to deflect attention away from not being able to do the work successfully • Being overly sensitive: they may lack confidence and feel ashamed of their inability to do the assigned work and try to hide this from their parents • Refusing to make an attempt or have

a go: struggling to do the workload in reasonable timeframes can also be incredibly frustrating for a child and can often result in them giving up, crying or getting angry
• Not handling making a mistake in a healthy manner • Hiding homework and assignments as well as trying to find ways to stop you from seeing the quality of the work they are producing • Saying that they have completed all homework and projects already at school • Remembering things one day but forgetting them within a few days; this could indicate that the learner has just memorised the work rather than understanding the concepts • Appears to have knowledge of the correct facts but can’t apply that information to problem solving situations • Seems to be able to do the current work but doesn’t understand or remember earlier concepts; this may indicate that the information is being stored only in the short term memory

and not being embedded in the long term memory. Children can fall behind their peers and not meet academic benchmarks for a number of reasons. A learner may have eye tracking issues that only become apparent as the text becomes smaller and there is an increased demand for reading for much longer periods. Different preferred learning styles can make accessing classroom learning activities difficult, these include: • AUDITORY_ where the learner remembers well and understands through listening
It’s important to determine specific needs early to avoid gaps forming in learning development. Many learners tend to change behaviour when they struggle with learning and classroom demands. Long term struggles with learning can be harmful for a child’s self esteem, confidence and future success. Remembering that learning in classrooms is very public; a child’s performance is clearly visible to their peers. If a learner is not successful, their self-perception and social development can be affected.
• KINAESTHETIC_ these learners retain more information through touch, movement, doing and feeling.
So if you detect a change in your child’s behaviour and level of interest in learning, then perhaps you are seeing the early warning signs that your child is either not coping with the classroom demands or they are finding the work too easy and losing interest.
Just like every student has their strengths and will find certain subjects and concepts easy to understand, they may also have growth areas requiring assistance along the way.
Every child needs to fulfill their potential and feel successful so they can understand more complex study, to enjoy the process and be confident and independent learners.
• VISUAL_ some students learn best when looking and remember well by looking at pictures, tables, graphs and/or videos.

DURING A CHILD’S FIRST YEAR OF LIFE, EVERY DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE
IS
MONUMENTAL.
PARENTS REJOICE WHEN THEIR LITTLE ONE ROLLS OVER, SITS UP BY THEMSELVES, CRAWLS, WALKS AND STANDS UNAIDED.
STORY JUTTA DEMPSEY
However, after these developmental milestones the lines become more blurry and we do not notice the physical development as much as children become more coordinated and balanced as the years pass. But these developmental stages are equally important and define your child’s future. Most of a child’s physical development is achieved during play and experimental activities, not directly coached or taught. Their skill development will be directly linked to opportunities they have for growth as well as their own interest and motivation at the time. For many, play is epitomized by children running, climbing, jumping, and moving. Beginning in infancy, children improve neuromuscular coordination through repeated use of their large muscles. Batting at a mobile as an infant, walking during early toddlerhood, running and climbing at the preschool level, and swinging and skipping in the primary years are all examples of how play enhances gross motor development. Play activities also include use of smaller muscles for a variety of tasks. Fine motor development is refined through cutting, lacing, buttoning, painting, and writing experiences
in play. Building with lego, putting together puzzles, sand and water play, woodworking projects, play dough, and dressing dolls are play activities that promote fine motor development. As children mature, they use their muscles in continually more complex ways, integrating large and fine muscle movements with visual perception. Play allows frequent practice of these complicated actions. Hitting and catching a ball, jumping rope, playing hopscotch and using the monkey bars are all examples of these more difficult coordinated movements. Play allows children to develop a better awareness of body, space, and direction. As they move their bodies, children learn about up, down, in, out, over, under, left, right and more as they climb, swing, crawl, and run. Playing in the gym or outdoors is particularly good for body awareness learning. The involvement of parents is vital for the development of a child’s motor skills and attitudes. Take an interest in your child’s physical development and provide opportunities to be involved in physical activity. According to the Child Development Institute, electronic media (including television, video games, movies, mobile phones, and the Internet) has an effect on physical play. Children
are spending more time engaged in passive play, using a keyboard or electronic device. While this can have some benefits, they should spend most of their time physically playing and interacting with others. Routinely checking the physical development of your child is as vital for their development as keeping updated on their academic advancement. You would not leave their learning of language to chance – you talk and interact with them to encourage appropriate development from saying Mum and Dad in infancy, to being socially courteous and polite in childhood. Role modelling is a particularly important aspect of parenting the physical development of your child. A parent who walks their dog twice daily teaches children that physical activity is normal and enjoyable, from infancy when they are in the pram to childhood when they are peddling next to you and adolescence when they are talking and communicating with you on the walk. A parent watching TV and playing electronic games and texting will be sending a very different message to their child as to what play constitutes.

MANY CHILDREN WILL EXPERIENCE DISRUPTED SLEEP DUE TO
KIDS ISSUES
NIGHTMARES AND NIGHT TERRORS. STORY MEGAN COLAHAN Nightmares are frightening dreams that wake children up and leave them feeling scared. Night terrors are different to this and are much less common. They do not happen during dreams and children have no recollection of the night terror when they wake up. They usually happen around the same time each night (most often around 1 to 2 hours after the child has fallen asleep) and can happen for several nights in a row before stopping and maybe restarting weeks or months later. During the night terror they remain asleep or are only partially awake. Children can appear very distressed during a night terror, often screaming with a fast heartbeat and a fearful look. It is unclear what causes night terrors but they may run in families and they may be more frequent during times of illness, stress or poor sleep patterns.
The following strategies may be useful if your child is having night terrors: • Don’t try to wake your child up. Provide comfort and use a soothing voice. • Don’t talk to your child about it the next day as they won’t remember the night terror. • Think about what has been happening in his / her life and whether there is anything stressful that could be changed. • Try a ‘planned waking’ approach: because the terrors occur at around the same time each night, gently wake your child about 15 minutes prior to that time. You might just give your child a cuddle, or get them a drink of water or take them to the toilet. The waking only needs to be very brief. The idea is that this waking will break the usual sleep cycle and may stop the night terror from occurring. If the night terrors persist it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor for further advice.

NIGHT TERRORS
WHILE DRESSING UP AS A SUPERHERO, A PRINCESS OR A FIREMAN MIGHT BE FUN, THERE ARE ALSO MANY DEVELOPMENTAL BENEFITS TO ROLE PLAYING AND IMAGINATIVE PLAY. STORY AMANDA CRANSTON Role playing is how children begin to make sense of the world. Children are very good at observing and imitating, either learning from family and friends or through stories and movies. One of the first acts of role playing is pretending to be ‘mum’ and putting on an apron to cook dinner or rocking their doll like a newborn baby. They copy their fathers, their teachers, the doctor, their favourite superhero and even the family dog, acting in a way they see the people and objects around them. Dressing up is an extension of this role playing and children can become completely absorbed in their new persona as a policeman, a pirate or even king of the castle. And the more props the better! One local teacher explains that the reason most pre-schools, kindys and preps have a dress-up corner is because it encourages play-based learning and helps kids develop academic and emotional skills. “It helps to define behaviours, develop respect for authority, encourage the development of vocabulary and conversational skills and stimulates imagination and creativity,” she says. “It also encourages critical thinking as kids plan, develop, negotiate and problem solve in a supportive environment where imagination is their only limitation.”
DRESS UP
A dress-up box is actually a wonderful way to encourage socialisation among children as they interact and negotiate the rules of their play, as well as learning to empathise and understand how others feel. They can play a doctor taking care of a patient, be a superhero rescuing a princess from the bad guys or be a fireman putting out a fire. There are so many different scenarios and children are very good at creating their own stories. Kids also improve their fine motor skills through playing dress-ups by doing up buttons on their clothes, zipping up zips, tying up aprons and dressing their dolls and teddies. Gross motor skills are also developed through physical actions during play like dancing, running, flying like a superhero, crawling like a dog, spinning like a cloud or jumping like a kangaroo. So what do kids need in their dress-up box? Either store-bought costumes, dress-ups from charity shops and garage sales or bits and pieces from home like shawls, high heels, old bags, aprons, hats, gloves, tiaras, costume jewellery and fabric for capes. Other great items include glasses with the lenses removed, masks and wigs. Props are also great for dress-up games so items such as old mobile phones, computer keyboards, clipboards, microphones, little treasure chests and old sheets for indoor cubbies will provide endless fun. Any props or costume items that can inspire and create hours of fun are perfect. Puppets are also wonderful for role playing as again kids need to use their imagination, empathise with others, create a story and act it out. Whether using store-bought puppets or handmade ones, parents and kids can either re-tell one of their favourite fairytale stories or create their own adventurous tale as together they explore the world of make believe.

E M B R AC I NG IMP ERFEC TIO N EVER PICKED UP A MAGAZINE WITH MIRANDA ON THE COVER, CARRYING HER SON FLYNN ON ONE HIP WHILE TOTTERING IN SKY-HIGH STILETTOS, MAKE-UP PERFECT, NOT A HAIR OUT OF PLACE THEN GLANCED DOWN AT YOUR OWN CLOTHES AND THOUGHT: “WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?” STORY CARLY HAMMERSLEY
Mainstream media bombards society with an unrealistic picture of what motherhood should be. Mums are feeling more pressure than ever before to bounce back after childbirth, get it together and go on with their lives as if a child is nothing more than an accessory. The real story is much different to that which Miranda portrays and can be different for every woman. Some women are natural born mums, while others take time to settle into the change of pace. No matter your previous life experience, career success, or socio-economic standing - becoming a mum seems to be a huge leveler. Even the most confident woman in the world can be left feeling undone by the desire to be “everything for everyone”. The high expectations placed on mothers by the ideal of modern motherhood can put untold strain on mums and the family unit as a whole as a result. Most new mums would know about the risks of post-natal depression, however a recent study found that the incidence of PND is more common for mums around the time their eldest child is turning four years old.
2 2 | August 2014 | w ww.pa k ma g.c o m.a u
A Murdoch Children's Research Institute study of 1500 mothers found that 10 per cent of women reported symptoms of depression a year after the birth of their first child – but this increased to 15 per cent four years after the birth. The findings are unsurprising when you consider the factors at play. By the time the eldest child is four, chances are they have a younger sibling perhaps even two - who have joined them. Mums may be considering getting back into the workforce. The stresses of juggling multiple children, daycare and early education, the financial pressures that come with this - on top of daily family life - can be enormous. Many mums will tell you they cope, just because they have to. These statistics, not to mention the more often undiagnosed rates of “mum burnout”, point to the need for mums to make more “me” time and stop putting everything else before themselves. Often trying to juggle so much at once can actually be worse for children as a result. But this shouldn’t be seen as yet another reason for mums to feel guilty! Instead, try to embrace the imperfections of life. Realise that if something doesn’t get done one day, there’s always the next.
If the washing sits unfolded for a few days, it’s not the end of the world. And if the kids eat weet bix for dinner - at least they’re eating! Try to remember that your children have their whole lives in front of them, what they will recall from their childhood is the time you spent with them - not whether the ironing was done or if the house was immaculate. This is your life right now. Embrace it rather than endure it. If you feel like you are struggling to find a balance, there are lots of places you can go to get parenting advice including your local community health centre. The Facebook page The Imperfect Mum is a great online space offering mums a place to embrace the ups and downs of motherhood, imperfections and all. This month, creator and founder of The Imperfect Mum, Kristy Vallely and her panel of specialists will hold their first ever conference, fittingly titled Empowering Women 2014. Aimed at bringing the online community face-to-face and providing real-life connections, the conference will break down barriers and the best news - it’s being held right here in beautiful Far North Queensland! For information on tickets visit www.theimperfectmum.com.au
"Motherly guilt is spurred on by a deceptive lie that tries to convince us that we cannot be an imperfect mum! Motherly guilt leads to reduced self-confidence, constant comparison with other mums, often second-guessing ourselves, and feeling bad when we take time out to nurture ‘us’! – this then impacts our parenting, our relationships, our emotional well-being, our future prospects, our employment opportunities… you get the picture! Motherly guilt is NOT part and parcel of motherhood! You can manage it and break free from it’s grip."
"An imperfect mum is one that lives in the real world. They don't seek the myth of perfection. There are days where the school run will be done in PJ's, toasted sandwiches will be dinner and cuddles on the couch may mean the dirty plates are there a little bit longer.

An imperfect mum is you and me. We laugh, we cry and we try to be there not just for our family, but friends too. We are givers and have kind hearts, it is now time to give a little more kindness to ourselves"
"The imperfect mum... that statement in itself is wisdom! The wisdom for all of us as women to acknowledge that being the best Mum or Dad you can be is imperfect perfection. To let go of our idealist, magazine, girlie movie or Cinderella picture book views of Motherhood and unrealistic expectations of ourselves and instead embrace the challenges, joys and sheer bloody hard work of parenting in all its imperfections - now that is wisdom."

B A BY TONGUE TIE WHEN YOU HEAR THE TERM “TONGUE TIE”, USUALLY THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT COMES TO MIND IS A VISION OF SOMEONE SPEAKING TO AN AUDIENCE, STRUGGLING TO FIND THE RIGHT WORDS. HOWEVER, TONGUE AND ASSOCIATED LIP TIES ARE A CONGENITAL (PRESENT AT BIRTH) AND HEREDITARY CONDITION KNOWN AS ANKYLOGLOSSIA AND MANY PARENTS MAY ALSO BE UNAWARE AT JUST HOW OFTEN THEY TEND TO OCCUR - WITH THE INCIDENCE ESTIMATED AT BETWEEN 4-5 PERCENT OF BABIES BORN HAVING SOME DEGREE OF FRENUM RESTRICTION. STORY CARLY HAMMERSLEY There is little doubt that tongue-tied children have a higher propensity for breastfeeding difficulty but left untreated, severe cases can also have other long-term implications such as speech, dental, swallowing and digestive issues.
of babies with tongue ties will also have some level of lip tie, where the lip will attach to the gum. This will be evident by the piece of skin under the baby’s upper lip (the labial frenulum) appearing very short or thick and being pinned too tightly to the upper gum.
The wide-range and varying degrees of ties mean they often present in many different shapes and forms. In trying to understand how best to treat children with tongue tie, practitioners have developed a classification system to describe tongue tie. Most practitioners use a classification where the tongue tie is given a grade of one, two, three, or four. Classically, class one and two are thought of as anterior, whereas class three and four are posterior. These distinctions do not grade the severity of the tongue tie, but are a description of where the tie attaches to the tongue. A tongue-tied baby with a class four tie may have severe breastfeeding or other problems while class one babies may feed normally, and vice versa.
Diagnosis and treatment of lip and tongue tie is still problematic and often involves much persistence and perseverance on behalf of parents. If your baby appears to have trouble latching, slides off the nipple, or there is nipple damage or pain on behalf of the mother, assistance from a Lactation Consultant, Paediatrician or Laser Dentist may be helpful.
Often health care providers only look for very prominent, classic tongue ties that often create a heart shaped tongue. However, it is posterior tongue ties that seem to pose the biggest diagnostic challenge and can be deceptively hidden in the base (back) area under the tongue. A further complication of ankyloglossia, many studies now suggest that the majority
There are two main forms of treatment of tongue and lip ties. The first involves a frenectomy with traditional cutting via scalpel in a conventional surgical procedure. There has been a move in recent times towards using laser surgery as an alternative and many specialists in the field now suggest this to be the preferred option, as it allows the tie to be separated layer by layer. Laser surgery is a relatively quick and straightforward process, not requiring general anaesthetic, the operating room, sutures or oral medications. It can also be completed within a few minutes and the majority of babies are able to breastfeed straight after the procedure. In fact, this is encouraged as it provides a means of comforting the baby as well as cleansing
the mouth with bacterial-fighting antibodies present in breastmilk. Whether you choose a traditional surgical approach or laser, aftercare for the procedure usually involves some stretching exercises performed to ensure the ties do not reattach. Many parents who have gone through the procedure find this to be the worst stage of treatment, as most babies hate being subjected to the stretches which need to be performed several times a day. However the worst is generally over within a couple of days and almost immediately after treatment the new-found range of motion, with babies often being able to poke out their tongues for the first time, bring joy and relief to parents and babies alike. SYMPTOMS OF TONGUE OR LIP TIE • poor ability to latch or inability to stay latched • sliding off the nipple • falling asleep at the breast • regular clicking during a feed • poor weight gain • maternal nipple pain or damage • increased maternal nipple or breast infection • compromised maternal milk supply • dribbling milk at the breast/ bottle • digestive issues such as increased gassiness or reflux due to additional air being swallowed or poor control of the milk during swallowing.

HEALTH
PLAN FOR BETTER SLEEP
H A N D, F O O T A N D MOUTH DISEASE
STORY NARELLE MULLER
STORY DR. CLAIRE STEWART
Mums and Dads, this is an issue close to all our hearts – sleep. Or, lack of. Getting enough sleep is important for vitality and, as we all know with young children, just getting enough to function as a normal human being can be a challenge, let alone feeling good enough to exercise. Still, while we may complain about hours lost in the night to colleagues the next day at work, or grump our way through the day, we often treat the issue of sleep as a luxury rather than an imperative element of our health and lifestyle. Sleep hygiene is the latest buzz phrase and it has nothing to do with cleanliness. Experts say correct sleep hygiene allows us to sleep better, which results in better moods and increased energy. We often send mixed messages to our bodies before we go to bed. In the lead-up to bedtime, instead of allowing ourselves to wind down, we keep adrenaline and other stress hormones running by using computers
and mobile phones. Eating heavy meals before bedtime and drinking alcohol doesn’t help either. Try to eat dinner early and keep portions small. Keep your bedroom dark and calm. It is said every hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight. So, instead of blaming little people for disrupting your sleep, consider making best use of the valuable hours when you can catch a few winks. Switch off all electronic devices at least an hour before you plan to go to bed and don’t charge them close to where you are sleeping, as electromagnetic radiation can also affect your sleep cycle. You can’t stop children waking you in the night, but you can make the most of the valuable hours you do get.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness. It is usually seen in children under 5 but can occur at any age. The usual signs are a fever, a sore throat, ulcers in the mouth and a blistery rash which is usually present on the soles of the feet and palms of the hand. The illness is usually mild but your child will probably be feeling miserable and the mouth ulcers can be quite sore. It is important to watch out for dehydration so offer small amounts of water frequently if drinking is painful. See your GP if you have any concerns at all. HFMD is a virus so it cannot be treated with antibiotics but paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to help with the discomfort and fever. HFMD is very infectious and is spread from person to person through: • Fluid from the blisters on the hands and feet • Coughing and sneezing • Saliva (e.g. when toys are shared that have been in an infected child’s mouth) • Faeces (e.g. if hands aren’t washed properly after changing a nappy) Children with HFMD need to stay home from childcare and school until all the blisters have dried completely. It is also recommended that the childcare director or principal is notified about infections to help prevent further cases. The best way to prevent HFMD is by remembering to wash hands well after changing nappies, wiping noses, coughing, sneezing etc as well as avoiding sharing eating utensils and towels.

EDITORIAL
TINA ARENA S U P E R S TA R M U M ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST FEMALE SINGERS, TINA ARENA, RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH AMANDA CRANSTON TO TALK ABOUT MOTHERHOOD, MUSIC AND HER UPCOMING NATIONAL TOUR.
Touring Cairns at the end of this month with her latest album RESET, Tina is looking forward to playing new music and bringing her family to Far North Queensland. Her husband and son will travel with her for the first half of the tour, before her son Gabriel has to head back to school. Tina says that with an eight year-old son, it is ironic to think she actually started her own musical career at the age of eight on the television show Young Talent Time. Since then she has gone from strength-to-strength becoming a singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. She has performed in countless musical productions both in Australia and overseas, has won multiple ARIA awards, World Music Awards, has been awarded the Knighthood of the Order of National Merit in France and received the Order of State in Australia. Tina has produced multiple award-winning albums and can competently sing in four different languages (English, French, Italian and Spanish). And her performance last year on the television show Dancing with the Stars also won her a new league of fans, inspiring the next generation of Tina supporters while her already devoted fans were thrilled to see her back in the spotlight. Tina says that music has always been her life and although some of her priorities have changed since becoming a mother, it is important to always be true to yourself. Like most working mums it can sometimes be hard to juggle career and motherhood but Tina takes it all in her stride and says the secret for her is having a great partner and good organisation. “It’s actually organised chaos in our household most of the time but Gabe
is never deprived of anything and he always knows what is going on,” she says. “And we make sure we are never away from each other for very long as family is incredibly important.” She adds that separation is an accepted part of life these days as the evolution of the family unit has changed. “Many parents travel for work and as a family we spend six months in France and six months in Australia so my son doesn’t know any different.” Tina says she is just like any other parent and even volunteers at school when she can but explains that French children are more intrigued by her fame than Australian children. “I have volunteered a few times but not as much as I would like as there isn’t as much call for parent help in France. I did recently go on a school excursion to the gallery but the kids kept saying “Oh my god, Gabriel’s mum is Tina Arena””, she laughs. “Kids in Australia know who I am but are much more reserved, whereas kids in France are more extroverted and I had to explain to them that I am a mum too.”
3 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT TINA: 1_ FAVOURITE TINA SONG Hard one to answer but ‘Chains’ always stands out for me as being special 2_ FAVOURITE MOTHER’S DAY PRESENT This year I had breakfast in bed with flowers, a hand drawn picture, a bowl of chopped apple, yoghurt and tea 3_ FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION South of France, Corsica and family’s beach house on Mornington Peninsula (Australia)
TINA ARENA RESET TOUR 2014 Friday 29 August Cairns Convention Centre Saturday 30 August Townsville Entertainment Centre Tickets available_ www.ticketlink.com.au or 1300 855 835
Like most mums, Tina is incredibly proud of her son and recognises that with both parents being musicians (her French husband Vince is an actor, songwriter and musician) that he would probably inherit some musical ability. “Gabriel has a great instinct for harmony. He is also a great little drummer and a beautiful singer, but he would be even better if he applied himself,” she laughs. Tina says that if he does choose a career in music she will make sure he understands that it is a lot of hard work and is not easy, but that with passion you can succeed at anything and to always treat others the way you want to be treated.

STILL AWA K E STILL! STILL AWAKE STILL! IS A FUNNY, ANARCHIC, MUSICAL THEATRE WORK WITH IRRESISTIBLE CHILDAPPEAL AND A SOPHISTICATION THAT DELIGHTS ADULTS TOO. IT’S GLORIOUSLY
UNPREDICTABLE
AND VOLUPTUOUS, WITH THE GLAMOUR OF A BIG NIGHT OUT.
42 | August 2014 | www.pa k ma g.c o m.a u
www.pakmag.com.au
Part-concert, part-theatre, the entire show emerges like magic from beneath the lid of a grand piano. Featuring superb acoustic music, comic acting and a rich visual world of surprises, Still Awake Still! is a unique experience. The show features the legendary Ms Ivory Tinklefinger, Queen of Sleep, whose absurd task is to sing the audience to sleep. On a magnificent grand piano, she proudly performs her lullabies. But not only does she fail to put a single child to sleep, she also conjures two mischievous musical boys from the heart of the piano.
What’s happening? Who is in control here? And can she resist the temptation to join in? Inspired by parents’ daily challenge of putting their little ones to bed, Still Awake Still! explores the tussle between order and chaos, rest and play, reason and intuition, in a drama that celebrates the process of creativity. Still Awake Still! played to sell-out houses of delighted families during its premiere season at the Arts Centre Melbourne in September 2011 and played at the New Victory theatre in New York this year.

GIRLS BEDROOM STORY CARLY HAMMERSLEY Frozen. Peppa Pig. Dora the Explorer. Barbie. Chances are, at some point or another the latest “fad” has hit your house and you’ve been begged to transform your child’s room into a shrine to children’s pop culture! The good news is you can create a whimsical room full of beauty and wonder for little girls without a hint of Peppa Pig or Princess Elsa! Choosing gorgeous neutrals, layering textures and adding in carefully selected pops of colour will create a sanctuary fit for your own little princess while promoting calm and restful nights. The other win for busy mums and dads, decorating in this style while your child is still young means the room will endure longer than any “themed” room and won’t date when the latest fad comes and goes!
1
BEDS There are a huge variety of basic white framed beds on the market. Choosing a king single or frame with trundle
underneath to cater for sleepovers is a great idea as it means the bed will be likely to last your child into their teens. OCCASIONAL CHAIRS Adding a space for children to sit, create or read a book is a great idea. The Eames replica DSW chair (pictured) comes in a range of colours (think red, orange, blue and yellow!) or the always classic white. On trend, stylish, practical and best of all, can be wiped over when dirty little fingers inevitably let loose! A matching table is also available at www.zanui.com.au STORAGE Children (especially younger kids) have small clothing so often freestanding storage like the Ouef Merlin Dresser is a more versatile option for many families. The Ouef is a significant investment piece priced at $1299 so if on a budget, try the Nyvoll three drawer from Ikea which offers a similar look. (Available through Sweden to You for $349 plus delivery). POPS OF COLOUR AND TEXTURES
2
To create a whimsical room, layer textures. Cushions, doona covers, throws and wallpaper in neutral tones are timeless but provide depth. Children learn through their senses so make their bedroom a place worthy of exploration. Don’t miss our feature on boys bedrooms in the September edition of PakMag!

VINTAGE SIGNS ARE POPULAR DECOR PIECES. COMPLEMENT THE CRATES MADE IN PART 1 OF OUR LAUNDRY MAKEOVER WITH THIS DIY RETRO SIGN PROJECT. STORY SOFIE BUCHHOLZ The feature product used to create this aged look is ‘Chalk Paint’.Commercial chalk paint is available from most hardware and paint stores, however DIY Chalk Paint can be made by adding Plaster of Paris to house paint. For this project, use a ratio of 1:2 Plaster of Paris to house paint. If the consistency is too thick to work with, add water.
2
MAKING THE SIGN STEP 1_ Cut a timber strip to size based on your letter spread. STEP 2_ To complement the featured ‘Bally’ print, layers of yellow, black and white paint have been used to make the sign. The yellow and white paint contain the Plaster of Paris, however the black was spray paint. Apply one coat of each colour paint to the timber in the desired order, ensuring that each coat is dry to touch before the next coat is applied. STEP 3_ Using an electric sander, lightly sand the sign to achieve a
smooth finish. To further distress the paint, heavily sand sections of the sign to reveal more of the underlying colours to achieve an aged look. Sanding around the edge of the sign and giving the edges a warn look works well. STEP 4_ Using a wood or suitable craft glue, attach the letters to your sign.
DIY PRODUCTS_ Sample Pot Paint Colours ($8-$12) Plaster of Paris, ($6.19) Wooden Letters ($1.83) each Timber ($6.06) a length. STYLING PRODUCTS_ Bally, Outdoor Print ($10) Red Peg, Laundry, Soak Containers ($5-$8).

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR SALE IS A BIG STEP FOR MANY. EMOTIONALLY IT CAN BE A BIG ASK, ESPECIALLY FOR PARENTS, WHO MAY HAVE SPENT THEIR CHILDREN’S FORMATIVE YEARS IN A HOME AND FEEL THAT IT HOLDS MANY MEMORIES. HOWEVER, IF THE TIME IS RIGHT TO MOVE ON THERE ARE SOME STEPS THAT YOU CAN TAKE TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR SALE SO THAT YOU CAN STRIVE TO ACHIEVE THE BEST PRICE POSSIBLE.
A local of Kewarra Beach for eight years, Elite Cairns agent Carol Thomas understands the local market well. Together with her strong sales background and extensive experience with buying, renovating and selling properties in Melbourne, Carol brings a fresh, honest and transparent approach to buying and selling property on the Northern Beaches. “As a mum I understand the particular needs of families when buying or selling a home and I do everything I can to make the process as seamless and smooth as possible for the whole family.” Carol says there are a number of things families can do to get their home ready for sale. INSIDE PREPARATION • Ensure the property is clean and tidy • Pack up and store away everything you do not need to use, you will be doing this when moving anyhow • Make sure all doors and handles work well • Open curtains to allow as much light in as possible • Remove clutter • Mirrors can be used to create a sense of space • Plants and flowers can add life to a room
OUTSIDE PRESENTATION • Replace broken glass windows • Remove leaves from gutter • Replace or fix broken fences • Mow lawns and mulch if necessary or possible • If you are unable to do these things, we are more than happy to recommend a handyman at a reasonable rate • Pets. You love them, but does the buyer of your home? It is a good idea to tidy up the pets area and take your dog for a walk for inspections. • Pressure clean all driveways and patio areas, don’t forget the mailbox! INSPECTION/OPEN HOMES • Try to be out of the property buyers will feel more comfortable • Make sure the property is a comfortable temperature • Dimmer switches or candles can soften the lighting and create atmosphere • Burners with the scent of vanilla really appeals to the senses and should be considered • Soft instrumental music in the background can be relaxing SUGGESTIONS • Obtain a building and pest inspection
prior to selling your property so you are aware of any potential problems and can assess whether it may deter buyers from completing a Contract for Sale. It also gives you the opportunity to take action to overcome the problem/s.
TENANTED PROPERTIES • We are your selling agent. We will speak to the tenant on your behalf to ensure the property is presentable • All tenants are given 24 hours written notice for inspections • We try to ensure that your tenant is as comfortable as possible with the sale process. IF YOU DECIDE TO KEEP YOUR PROPERTY AS AN INVESTMENT Elite has a close sister company that specialises in property management. Elite Cairns Rentals is located in Whitfield and Carol’s close relationship with the team of property managers will ensure you receive the very best of attention. If you then decide to sell at a later date, Carol can liaise with the rental team and keep you up to date with all aspects of the sale. Give Carol a call on 0407 091 834 or visit elitecairns.com.au

The lounge and dining area includes a huge daybed, board games and dining table but the most relaxing part of the property would have to be the deck that bridges the main house to the upper deck which leads to the master bedroom and ensuite. We spent most of our time in the house on the deck, which has two huge hammocks plus a great lounge area that overlooks the ocean and other islands close-by, plus a small barbecue which we cooked most of our meals on. The master bedroom is certainly the star, with by far the best view I have ever had from bed. The sunsets and sunrise, viewed snuggled under the covers, were stunning!
Often as parents we neglect to prioritise time for ourselves and couple time. After a busy five years of being parents, this was an exciting moment - jump in the car for our first weekend away. The leisurely drive to Mission Beach was fantastic with Bec from Mission Beach Charters collecting us and packing all our luggage on board. The boat trip over was delightful, we had exceptional weather and the ocean was teaming with wildlife. It took about 15 minutes on the boat and then we arrived at the stunning island. There are seven other houses on the island, plus two live-on caretaker's homes, plus on the other side of the island is the small boutique Bedarra Resort. As soon as my feet hit the sand, the sound of waves and wildlife were the only sounds I heard, which set the tone for the whole weekend.
If you are the adventurous type, there are several walks with sensational views. From the top of a headland we spotted huge sea turtles and other wildlife! Bring your backpack and throw in some nibbles and champagne and you have a perfect sunset picnic spot. If you enjoy fishing ensure you bring all your own gear. The kayak has a glass bottom so you can trek as far as you dare and same goes for the snorkelling. The ocean does give a cool breeze overnight so remember to pack some warm clothing. Bedarra Island is a location where lifestyle and the landscape join to create paradise. Memories made on Bedarra will be with you forever as this house is designed for those who wish to escape, unwind and relax. Our only regret is that life beckoned and we couldn’t stay longer - we missed our kids too much! WHAT TO PACK_ Things to read, swimmers and sunscreen, backpack, food and drinks in reusable bags, walking shoes and warm clothes.

Travel Ideas
For families looking for an easy budget friendly holiday, you just can’t go past Club Med and my recent stay at their Bali resort reminded me how much they have to offer. One of the best things about an all-inclusive holiday is that everything is included in one simple price so you know up front how much you’re spending on your accommodation, meals and drinks and most activities. THE CLUB MED INCLUSIONS: · Accommodation · Three gourmet meals a day prepared by international chefs, open bar including cocktails and snacks throughout the day · Kids club from 4-17 years (petite Club 2-3 years available at additional cost) · Sports and activities · Entertainment for all ages Aside from the excellent service and attention from the staff which is standard at every resort, they can be slightly different with what they offer in the way of activities, sports and facilities for kids so it is important to check with your travel agent that your choice offers everything you need. Inter-connecting rooms are important when travelling as a family and although it is possible to request, it is rare for hotels and resorts to
guarantee. This is not the case with Club Med and if they are available at the time of booking they can be guaranteed and offers great peace of mind and another great reason these resorts are perfect for families. Activities available at the resorts are second to none and are coordinated by their G.O.’s (Gentil Organisateur) who are much more than hotel staff and end up becoming more like friends. They organise all of the activities, entertainment, run the Kids Club programs and will ensure you and your family have the time of your life. Whether you want to watch a show or dance the night away, play golf, learn archery or flying trapeze, with top of the range facilities and equipment you will never run out of exciting things to do. Wanting some time away from the kids? Most resorts have adults only areas for those wanting to get away from it all while the kids play and they will never run out of things to do. Kids are extremely well catered for at Club Med resorts, with their Baby Welcome offering child care equipment, strollers and toys for young ones from 2-23 months and clubs for ages 4-17 included in the package price. Clubs for children from 4 months to 3 years, Petit and Baby Club Med, are also available as an optional extra.
· BABY CLUB MED (4-23 months) Run by G.Os who are experienced in caring for babies, offering early learning activities and peaceful moments for tiny tots. · PETIT CLUB MED (2-3 years) Fun and spacious play areas are provided for dances, happy gym sessions, learning farms, outdoor games and other quieter activities like singing and storytelling. · MINI CLUB MED (4-10 years) All activities are specifically designed for each age group like mini sporting tournaments with prizes on offer. · JUNIORS CLUB / CLUB MED PASSWORLD (11-17 years) Kids are supervised in two separate age groups with access to very trendy areas specifically designed for teenagers. Sports and artistic activities like sound mixing, hip hop, making videos and watching films.
Club Med is an easy choice for a family holiday and with over 60 Sun Resorts all over the world plus Ski Resorts in France, Italy, China and Japan, the hardest part is choosing your destination.

TICKS CAN BE FOUND ALL
Paralysis ticks are a parasite that feed on the blood of mammals. When a Paralysis tick crawls onto pets or other mammals, they wander over the body before attaching to feed. Paralysis Ticks most often attach around the head, neck and shoulders. During feeding the tick releases a toxin that interferes with muscles and nerves causing life-threatening paralysis.

• Change in voice/bark • Loss of appetite • Weakness, wobbly walk, lack of coordination and paralysis • Retching, coughing, choking & vomiting • Panting, grunting or difficulty breathing • Collapse If your pet shows any of these symptoms, you should seek immediate veterinary attention: • Contact your vet urgently for advice and an appointment. • Search your pet thoroughly for a tick paying particular attention to the head, neck and shoulder area. • Do NOT give any food, water or medications by mouth as animals

• Keep your pet calm and in a cool place until you visit the vet. Ticks can be very difficult to find, and pets can quickly progress to severe paralysis or death. Early diagnosis and treatment gives your pet the best chance of recovery.
Identifying ticks can be difficult, if you do find a tick remove it by firmly grasping the tick between thumb and forefinger and firmly tugging it out. If you are unsure whether a tick is a paralysis tick, bring it into one of our veterinary clinics for free identification by one of our nursing staff. We also provide free tick search training and advice to assist you in preventing tick paralysis in your pet. For more information regarding tick paralysis please contact 07 4032 9999 or visit www.cairnsvet.com.au
