08 STYLISH MATERNITY WEAR Feature Story 11 PLANNING FOR PARENTHOOD 17 DO YOU NEED A DOULA?

Hello and welcome to PakMag’s first ever magazine dedicated to Maternity and Baby. Having a baby is such a special time and there is always plenty to read up on. I was blessed last month to be with one of my friends as she delivered her first baby - it was an amazing experience and a real eye opener to be a birthing partner. It gave me a new perspective of what my husband went through and how amazing women are. I would like to dedicate this edition to Clare: an amazing lady, teacher and mother of two young boys that lost her battle with Leukaemia last year. Please support the World’s Greatest Shave this month as it raises money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Check out www.worldsgreatestshave.com.au to find out more. We also have our Easter Events this month. I can’t wait to see the Easter outfits and your kids’ faces when we bring out the Easter Bunny and give them lots of chocolate! Until next time, have a fantastic month, and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PakMag.

Stylish Wear

FOR A STYLISH MUM-TO-BE

Congratulations! You have just found out you are pregnant and already you feel like your clothes are not fitting you. You sit down in your favourite pair of jeans and feel like you are being cut in half. Being comfortable and stylish is an important part of feeling great during your pregnancy, so how do you get the best value and style from your maternity wardrobe? For most women there are two stages of buying - firstly when you are newly pregnant and things are starting to get a bit tight and uncomfortable. Then secondly, when you have come into your last trimester you realise how much your size and shape has changed due to your growing bump. With the first stage of buying it is about purchasing key pieces. Just as you have with your prepregnancy wardrobe, look for key pieces which you can wear multiple times per week if needed. If you are

8

MARCH 2015 www.pakmag.com.au

working invest in a good quality pair of maternity work pants or skirts. Specialist maternity labels use high quality fabrics and most styles will include an adjustable waistband to help see you through your pregnancy, giving you the best value for money in the long run. Look for a maternity store which offers free maternity styling sessions. Don’t be afraid to try different things on – you can be pleasantly surprised how your bump can change your style. As you enter the last trimester, reality hits as to how much your body has changed due to your growing baby and pieces you bought early on may not quite be suitable for much longer. This is the time to start looking at tops and dresses which are also suitable for breastfeeding as these pieces will cover you for the remaining weeks of your pregnancy and for the first few months when baby arrives and you are still getting back to your pre-baby body. It is important when looking for tops for breastfeeding that you feel comfortable and that they don’t

interfere with your baby getting good attachment to the breast. Wearing tops which are awkward to lift up not only make getting your baby to attach more difficult, they also tend to expose your ‘mummy tummy’ which can make you feel even more selfconscious when out in public. All this adds to unnecessary stress which babies can pick up on. Breastfeeding singlets are a fantastic invention and are a must have in your hospital bag as they make learning to breastfeed and night feeding less stressful. They can be worn as daywear at home, for sleeping or layered under a t-shirt. At this stage usually three to four tops, three breastfeeding singlets and a dress will cover you for the last trimester and into the breastfeeding stage. You will wear these pieces multiple times a week for around six months so purchase quality items that you know will stand the time. Leia Williams is the owner of Elle J and mum of two gorgeous gingerhaired boys. Visit: www.ellej.com.au

PLANNING FOR PARENTHOOD PRE-CONCEPTION HEALTH

When used in conjunction with conventional medicine, acupuncture has been shown to increase fertility by reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and balancing the endocrine system. Visit your GP for a checkup and ensure you are up to date with your immunisations and have had a recent pap smear. Omega Health offers extended opening hours, including weekend care in a convenient location at 24/161 Pease Street Manoora. Visit them online at omegahealth.com.au Give up smoking. Quitline provides a free, confidential and individually tailored service to assist you in the process of quitting smoking. You can access this telephone service by calling 13 7848 (13 QUIT) from anywhere in Australia. Begin taking folate and prenatal vitamins. Start at least a month before you're planning to get pregnant to lower the chances of certain birth defects.

IVF

If you have not been able to get pregnant after trying for 12 months (or six months if you are over 35) you should speak with your doctor about fertility help. Assisted fertility services are not available through the public health system. There are a number of private clinics across Queensland—speak with your doctor for a referral. As a private health service you will be responsible for the cost of your treatment, however you may be able to claim some of the cost back through Medicare or private health insurance.

FINANCE/LEGAL

Private Health and Obstetric services. If you want to be covered

for obstetrics (pregnancy and birth related services) in a private hospital and with a private obstetrician, you need to take out private hospital cover or upgrade your existing policy well before you’re pregnant. All health funds have a 12 month waiting period for obstetric services and they’re usually very strict in applying this rule. This means you need to have held the appropriate level of private health cover for at least 12 months before you’re admitted to hospital. In order to cover your baby from birth, without waiting periods, you must check that your hospital policy will cover dependent children as well as yourself. A single hospital policy covers you – but it won’t cover your baby. It’s important to ensure your baby is covered from birth in case he or she requires hospital care immediately. This could occur in cases of premature birth where a baby is admitted to a Special Care Nursery or Intensive Care Unit. This type of admission is very costly and can rise into the tens of thousands of dollars. Every fund has different rules about covering newborn babies. Check with your health fund as early as you can about which rules apply to you. Parental leave entitlements: Employees can get parental leave when a child is born or adopted. Parental leave entitlements include: • maternity leave • paternity and partner leave • adoption leave • special maternity leave • a safe job and no safe job leave • a right to return to old job. The Paid Parental Leave scheme provides Financial support for up to 18 weeks to help eligible parents take time off work to care for a newborn or recently adopted child. This is separate to any leave entitlements offered by your employer. If you’re unsure about what you may be entitled to, talk to your Human Resources department or contact Centrelink.

DAYCARE

It may seem a long way off when you are first planning on pregnancy but consider your options regarding daycare, especially if you plan on returning to the workforce after giving birth. Competition for positions can be tough and many people don’t realise how expensive care can be so it’s a great idea to plan ahead. A website to check for vacancies and rates in your area is www.careforkids.com.au

PARENTHOOD FINANCE/LEGAL A legal guardian is an adult designated to care for a child in case both parents die before that child reaches adulthood. While the thought might make you shudder, you need to choose a guardian so the courts don't do it for you if the worst should happen.

Deciding who will raise your child in your absence is one of the toughest decisions you'll face as a parent. Many parents say the first step is to admit that no one is good enough. Once you get past the idea that the best parent for your child is you and no one else can compare, you can move on to choosing the next best person. Make a list of all the possible candidates, and then sit down with your partner and talk over the pros and cons of each one. The person you select as guardian may have a huge task ahead. She would have to meet your child's emotional and physical needs and raise your child to be a competent and fulfilled adult. DO YOU NEED A DOULA? If you pick up any birth book these days, chances are there will be a mention of doulas somewhere. HYPNOBIRTH Long time PakMag readers may recall that our Publisher Bree utilised hypnobirthing for the birth of her second son Sean, back in 2011. Recently she had the opportunity to act as a birth partner for one of her good friends who also utilised the technique. STORY Carly Hammersley

Many expectant mums may have heard the term ‘hypnobirthing’ in passing but been hesitant to look into the concept more closely.

these classes made me feel confident and positive that I could have a good birth. And I needed to believe that was possible.”

The philosophy of hypnobirthing is that childbirth is a normal, healthy function that can be accomplished naturally, gently and safely. “When I undertook my hypnobirthing course prior to Sean’s birth I learned more about the actual process of childbirth as well as relaxation techniques and how to work with my body rather than against it.”

Natural birth is not a new concept. Throughout history women have birthed naturally without the use of anaesthesia or many of the interventions that are common today.

“My first labour was traumatic - I had to be induced because I was two weeks overdue and then it all turned into a blur of immense pain and medical intervention. IV drips, epidural, episiotomy and a suction cap for baby left me feeling utterly exhausted and I felt like a failure.” Bree says when she discovered she was expecting a second child she immediately knew she wanted to have a more empowering experience of labour. Her research led her to discover hypnobirthing after also preparing herself physically though acupuncture, chiropractic and pilates. “I really didn’t know what hypnobirthing was but by doing the course I learned why I had the birthing experience I had the first time and how to make it different. Rather than approaching this birth with fear and trepidation,

Studies have shown that hypnosis and self-hypnosis during childbirth may lead to: • decreased average length of labour • lower caesarean section rates • decreased use of pain relief medication such as gas and epidurals • increased ease and comfort of labour and birth (self-reported and observed) • emotional satisfaction of having their birthing partners informed, involved and supportive.

well. I would definitely recommend hypnobirthing to all mums who want to be in control of their birth experience.” If you would like more info about hypnobirthing call Zoe Strickland on 0420 504 421 or visit www.zoestricklandmassage.com. au. She is a certified practitioner and offers private and group classes in Cairns.

WHAT IS HYPNOBIRTHING? • It is a philosophy and an approach to birthing. • It is understanding the physiology of natural undisturbed birth. • It is about how our mind affects our body in childbirth.

In addition to this, the majority of women experiencing hypnosis during childbirth in their second or subsequent births reported feeling more in control, confident, relaxed and focused, and less fearful, than during their other birthing experiences.

• It is learning techniques to deeply relax.

Bree says her friend, who was having her first child, had to be induced and found hypnobirthing very beneficial in her quick labour. “It was her first baby and she totally rocked it, she did so

• It is about a gentle experience for mum, dad and baby.

• It is about how to manage the sensations of labour. • It is about how your partner can support you.

HEALTH MARCH FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FLU

STAYING HEALTHY THROUGH PREGNANCY

If you’ve been unlucky enough to get influenza – also known as ‘the flu’ – then you’ll know it’s horrible. The virus is more than just a bad cold and, in some cases, can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or even death.

STORY Dr John McIntosh

“It’s a very serious virus,” Omega Health Medical Centre’s Dr Anthony Mahler said, “and one that is constantly mutating. That’s why you need to get vaccinated against the most recent strain of the virus every year.”

1. THE FLU ISN’T JUST A COMMON COLD “While a common cold does cause a mild fever and a runny nose, the symptoms only last for a few days. The flu, however, causes a high fever, muscular pains, shivering, a headache, and a dry cough that can become quite severe,” says Dr Mahler. “In the more severe cases it can progress to pneumonia and other potentially life-threatening conditions.”

2. THOSE AT HIGH RISK OF COMPLICATIONS ARE VACCINATED “The flu is easily spread through coughing, sneezing, or by touching contaminated surfaces,” Dr Mahler said. “Serious complications occur most often in those whose immune system is not as strong – such as young children, pregnant women and people with a chronic illness. All people are higher risk of complications should be vaccinated.”

3. IMMUNISATION TAKES 10 TO 14 DAYS FOR FULL EFFECT “You aren’t protected against the flu immediately because the vaccine takes up to two weeks for your body to process. As the flu season starts in the dry season here in Cairns, we strongly encourage you to visit your family doctor and get vaccinated in March.”

4. GOOD HYGIENE ALSO HELPS TO STOP THE SPREAD OF FLU “Although a yearly vaccination is the best way to avoid spreading the flu, it is also very important to practice good hygiene,” said Dr Mahler. “Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and regularly wash your hands with soap or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

5. IF YOU’RE SICK, DON’T GO TO SCHOOL OR WORK “You should avoid going to school, work or crowded places when you’re sick to prevent spreading the virus to others,” he said. “If you or your children are unwell, stay home and rest. Paracetamol and fluids will manage mild cases of the flu. If symptoms are severe or you are at higher risk of complications visit your family doctor.” Dr Anthony Mahler is a GP at Omega Health Medical Centre in the Cairns suburb of Manoora. The Medical Centre is open until late every day of the year and has a range of experienced GPs for you to choose from to be your own family doctor. You can make an appointment online at www.omegahealth.com.au or by calling 4053 7911.

In the nine months of pregnancy, your body goes through the most incredible changes and creation of a new human being. Keeping healthy during this time is very important for both of you. The first thing to consider is that pregnancy is not an illness but one of life’s normal stages – so you need to keep active and involved in life with only a few changes. Because your growing baby needs quality nutrition, you should be eating well – as always you need plenty of fresh fruit, vegies, protein, with extra calcium being needed from milk and dairy products. How much weight should you gain? The good news is that for once in your life, those few extra kilos aren't cause for concern. If you were underweight to start with, you might need to gain a few more kilos than the average mumto-be. But if you were heavier before your pregnancy, you'll probably need to keep your weight gain in check. Being overweight or gaining too much can lead to complications such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, birth defects or having a big baby. The average weight gain for a woman with a normal BMI is around 12.5kg. If you are physically well there is no problem keeping fully active and maintaining your usual exercise regime right up until your belly is so big that you can’t actually do the activity. Giving birth requires a lot of endurance - it will probably be the biggest physical test of your life - so staying fit and healthy will make that process much easier. Stay happy, positive and enjoy your time as you create a miracle!

HEALTH / WELLBEING

HEALTH/ WELLBEING TIME FOR YOURSELF Speaking to many mums, especially those with newborns, it is evident that as a parent you lose time for yourself. Mums play an important role, dedicating their time to their child and fulfilling their needs. However, the consequences of losing ALL your time on a consistent basis can be detrimental. Taking time out allows mums to gain a sense of peace and happiness; feel energised and release pent up emotions and think more clearly.

HOW CAN YOU TAKE TIME OUT? 1. VALUE TIME FOR YOURSELF: When

you value the benefits of taking time out, it motivates you to do something about it. Understand how you feel when you don’t have time out and notice how much better you feel when you do.

2. COMMUNICATE YOUR NEEDS: Taking time out means asserting your needs. Approach those around you and express that you need their support.

3. MAKE TIME: You never find time; you need to make it. That may mean rearranging schedules. Start small.

4. FULFILL YOUR NEEDS: Ask yourself:

“What do I need right now to make myself feel better – physically and emotionally?”

5. OBSERVE ANY GUILT: Accept this

emotion. It may not disappear, but you can learn to manage it rather than let it take over. How? Talk to yourself with love. Most of all, remind yourself that taking time out means you can be a better mum and you can give more to those around you, especially your newborn baby!! LOVE YOUR GUTS! STORY Simone Kay If you’re a new mum, your abdominals, your pelvic floor, your whole body has been through a lot of new stuff. To get back to where you started (in terms of your physical self) you are going to need a new approach. What worked for your non-pregnant body, will almost certainly not work for your post natal one. Step one is simple, and oh so hard. Look down at your belly and love that thing! It has nurtured and grown your baby, it has been the incubator for life. If it doesn’t look quite right now, that’s ok, love it anyway. Step two - bravely go where you have not gone before. Consider and then embrace the idea that your core is more than your pelvic floor and transverse abdominus and integrating core into your movement and activities of daily living will be very beneficial. To strengthen your functional core start by eliminating the stuff that’s counterintuitive. No sit ups, no crunches, no planks. Every pregnant woman experiences a mild diastasis (separation of the linea alba) during pregnancy. Most will recover swiftly, some will take longer, and some may require the intervention of a physiotherapist or surgeon. The diastasis, regardless of the level, is made worse by the action of forward flexion - crunching the abdominals. Planks put pressure through shoulders and hips. Especially when the abdominals are weakened - so don’t do those either.

TRY THIS INSTEAD. 1. Rolling: The first ‘big’ movement your baby makes is to roll. Rolling creates awareness right through the body, and integrates the deep stabilisers and superficial abdominal muscles. Rolling is the foundation for all movement, and after periods of being sedentary or limited in movement, it can be a lot more challenging that you expect. It usually takes a baby about 12 - 16 weeks to get this right!! (Head to YouTube and look for Rolling Feldenkrais to get a bit of an idea of what it’s all about). 2. Crawling: Crawling patterns are fundamental to good movement. Strengthening shoulders by exerting force through the arms as they contact the ground, and co-ordinating the cross functional front and back lines of connective tissue in the body with alternating hand and foot patterns does great things for strengthening and integrating your core in movement. At the same time it enhances coordination and reaction skills. Rolling and crawling is something most of us need to relearn in our adult lives. In my eight years of working with new mums, and not so new mums, the effects of rolling patterns on gait and posture are instant and positive. Start slow and small and let your body dictate the rate of progress. Seek the advice of professionals that can help you identify any dysfunctional movement patterns, and then practice, like your baby does, so that you get it, you get it well, and it feels great. Most of all though, love your tummy and the strength you can draw from it. Being a new mum is one of the most wonderful experiences we can have and a big part of that is getting to know the amazing new person that you have created. Simone is a movement coach with a specialty in postnatal movement and fitness coaching and created Mumbalates to meet the exercise needs of all new mothers during the first six months of motherhood and beyond. *The advice in this article is of a general nature and every individual will have different needs. Always consult your doctor before commencing any post natal exercise program.

SQUASH ALIVE AND WELL IN CAIRNS

pakmag

Squash in Cairns is going from strength to strength and there are a number of different ways to get involved from Fixtures to Coaching and Speed Squash. Juniors have Coaching, Competition, Inter-town Competition and International Tours. Marc Forster of Squash Vision is based out of Sportsworld Fitness as the Club Coach. “There’s nothing we don't do here. We utilise the Gym to get stronger to play the game and the stronger and fitter we get the more calories we burn on the courts as we keep the ball in play. We cater for Juniors, Socials and Masters alike and there’s something for everyone. Junior tours, Senior Tours, fun weekends, its all there for us.

Squash was once the number two most participated sport in Australia in the 70’s and 80’s. Its decline has nothing to do with the game and the way it’s played but due to its viability in the market place. Forbes recently revealed the 10 healthiest sports in the world, using factors such as calories burned, injury risk, and muscular strength and endurance (among others) in their assessment. The number one sport as voted by them was squash. “Squash is a relatively safe game for beginners. Most impressively, experienced squash players can burn more than 1000 calories per hour during extended rallies and constant running around all four corners of the court. Flexibility is a must for squash success, as are cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Playing squash can also improve quickness and lower body strength,” Forbes Magazine

stated. Squash is quite simply great for the butt as that is the major muscle used in lunging for the ball. Sportsworld Fitness, the home of Cairns Squash boasts eight airconditioned courts and a large gym. This facility is second to none in Queensland and because squash is indoors there is no risk of the elements such as the sun and rain. Sportsworld Fitness and Cairns Squash will host the Australian Junior titles later in 2015. This unprecedented event has never been played outside of a major city before and will bring 300 plus players and officials to the event.

“There will be various Learn to Play Sessions held during the upcoming April school holidays for parents and their children . These are free classes funded by the State Government. Once these classes are over there will be other ways to become involved with the club and at various levels. Keep an eye out for the next edition of Pakmag and how you can learn this fantastic game for free!” Come down to check out Cairns and Districts best players in action on Thursday nights at 7.30pm. Players come from Mareeba, Mossman, Innisfail as well as Papua New Guinea and are competing for the Cairns Shield. Bring your kids along for a look, you never know what intrigues them and this could be the sport for them, its individual and you get out of it what you put in. If you’d like to know more about getting involved, contact Marc Forster on 0402 327 560 for a brochure on all the current programs and how you can get yourself or your kids involved in squash - a sport for life.

EARLY SWIMMING LESSONS AND THE CONNECTION TO IMPROVED LEARNING What parent doesn’t want their child to be safe in and around water? Ask any parent in Australia why they go to swimming lessons they will most likely reply “so my child doesn’t drown”. STORY Christine Dellit

Ask any parent if they want their child to do well at school and the answer is of course YES. A study recently undertaken by the Griffith Institute for Educational Research has confirmed a fact that I have observed after teaching swimming for 35 years and addresses both of the above. The findings have surpassed expectations and indicate that children who are involved in swimming lessons from a young age show better physical development and are more confident, but it is the results in literacy and numeracy that shocked even the researchers. The children are anywhere from 6 to 15 months ahead when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions. As well as achieving physical milestones faster, the swimming children scored significantly better in visual motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring in and drawing lines and shapes. The most amazing difference was in story recall (17 months ahead) and understanding directions (20 months ahead). “This is mind blowing stuff because it confirms the importance of swimming lessons beyond water

safety alone. It proves that swimming truly does provide added capital to children’s lives by helping them socially, physically, cognitively and emotionally,” Renowned Australian swim coach and personality Laurie Lawrence said. In light of the evidence in relation to early swimming and education, Swim Australia has formed a special interest group, SwimTots Futures, to look at the future of baby and toddler swimming in Australia. I am honoured to have been asked to be involved with this group along with five of my Australian peers. It is through this group that we aim to improve the teaching curriculum and educate our industry on up to date knowledge in relation to baby and toddler swimming. Of course many parents are at a quandary when it comes what age to start, where to go, and how often. It is important to attend an industry accredited swim school that places emphasis on quality and one that has extensive knowledge on child development. Small class numbers of three or four children maximum in water of 32 to 33 degrees are ideal so that each individual child and parent can be assessed and assisted. Small classes ensure your child is safer, faster. While it can be a little more expensive for a small class size initially, in the long run it is actually less expensive as goals and milestones are reached much quicker.

How young do I start lessons? Never too young! At both Little Snappers Swim School Smithfield and Essential Skills Swim School Bentley Park there is a Infant Aquatic Education and Swimming Program for two and three month old babies that educates parents on the Learn to Swim journey and covers subjects such as Inborn and Learnt responses, Aquatic Readiness and when is my child ready to submerge, what to do at home and some of the more concerning issues such as “dry drowning”. The children are then placed in age and ability assessed small classes that cater right through to stroke development and squad groups. It is never too late to commence lessons. Even if you start your child prior to attending prep you will see some educational benefits as proven in the Griffith University study. What other activity can you and your child do, that as well as being a life saving skill, can also have all the other associated educational benefits? Christine Dellit is Co-Director at Little Snappers Swim School, program developer for Essential Skills Swim School, Delegate for Swim Australia SwimTots Futures Special Interest Group and a Swim Australia National Teacher Presenter of Excellence recipient.

“Ryan is doing well, and enjoying being a normal little boy again”

WE CELEBRATED THE BIRTH OF OUR DAUGHTER, ONLY TO BE TOLD OUR SON HAD CANCER Imagine experiencing the joy of welcoming your new baby into the world, only to be followed by the news that your other child has blood cancer. This was the confronting reality faced by Katharine and Jason Aquilina when their 18 month-old son, Ryan was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013, soon after the birth of their daughter. The shock was further amplified when the family was told that Ryan would need to commence treatment immediately in Brisbane - at least 1500km away from their home in Innisfail. “It happened so quickly… the day after Ryan’s diagnosis we flew down to Brisbane, leaving our family, friends and home behind,” Jason said. The Leukaemia Foundation stepped in and provided the Aquilina family with a free home-away-from-home at one of the Brisbane accommodation villages while Ryan underwent months of gruelling treatment. “The Leukaemia Foundation have been so incredibly supportive and we’ve seen first-hand where the money raised for the Foundation goes,” Katharine said. Last year Jason decided to give back to the Foundation by taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave. Incredibly,

his team ‘Ryan’s Warriors’ were one of the top 30 fundraisers in Queensland, reaching close to $20,000. Every day another six Queenslanders are diagnosed with blood cancer. Families from far north Queensland like the Aquilinas must often relocate for life saving treatment. Costly medical bills and loss of income means many families find themselves in financially crippling circumstances whilst trying to cope with the shock and turmoil of a blood cancer diagnosis. Happily, after Ryan’s initial 10 month treatment in Brisbane, the family was able to return home in July 2014 for maintenance treatment which will last for another two years. “Ryan is doing well, and enjoying being a normal little boy again,” Katharine said.

help them through a very challenging time,” Mr Petch said. Last financial year the Foundation provided almost 40,000 nights of free accommodation to more than 630 Queensland families. The Leukaemia Foundation is the only Queensland charity dedicated to improving the lives of patients with all types of blood cancer and wants to see more people survive a blood cancer diagnosis and live a full life. That is why the Foundation invested $1.6 million last year in research projects which focus on improving patient health outcomes and developing more effective treatments. The Foundation’s work can only continue through the generosity of the community and support of fundraising events such as World’s Greatest Shave.

Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Bill Petch, said the Foundation needs to raise $5 million to continue funding lifesaving research and support services provided free-of-charge to patients.

You can be a part of helping to beat blood cancer! Go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com to sponsor someone or just make a donation to help the Foundation continue its vital work.

“World’s Greatest Shave is our most important fundraiser and provides most of the funds we need to maintain four accommodation villages for patients as well as the provision of services such as counselling, education and transport designed to

The giant maze world will be a sustainable dream, constructed from recycled, found and repurposed materials, and built right up to the lofty roof of the Tank. Wow! If kids want to be involved in making the giant rocket and maze in the lead up to festival, there are a variety of workshops from March through April they can attend, all being run by our facilitator Ruby Boussard. Additionally, there’s loads of activities for making, playing, creating & crafting plus an OPEN AIR STAGE with dancing, magic, circus, and more! There’ll be much roving entertainment through the entire site, with stilt walkers, a roving Pirate Theatre Show, yummy food and drinks stalls, as well as kid friendly market stalls. And within the BOTANICAL GARDENS VISITORS CENTRE, families can take in the works of our visiting artist in residence, Deanna Gabiga, an American fibre artist and metalsmith crocheting with fibre and wire to create a large butterfly rainforest environment. Deanna is conducting a School Holiday Program (11-16 April) for kids 10+ to adults who would like to learn to crochet, too. Phone 4032 6600 to book. PARENTS RETREAT If you’ve visited a display home or flicked through an architectural design magazine lately, you may have noticed a new trend that seems to be taking the interior design world by storm. STORY Carly Hammersley Just as open plan kitchens revolutionised the way we live a couple of decades ago, allowing mum (or whoever spends more time in the kitchen) to stay connected with all members of the household. the parents’ retreat is set to save marriages everywhere! Okay, maybe its powers are not quite that spectacular, but with lives getting busier all the time, the need to maximise time with our loved ones is at an all-time high. The parents’ retreat replaces the humble ensuite and separate robe and provides a resort-style feel in your very own home.

05. ARDEN TEAK BEDSIDE TABLE (Zanui) (RRP $749)

Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year and Director of Minosa Design Darren Genner said the once tackedon narrow bathroom with a small shower at one end, toilet at the other and vanity in the centre with small-tono storage is now being replaced with a larger space and less walls.

06. STA

“These walk-through spaces allow a couple to share a space, allowing greater interaction during the key parts of their day. It’s a space where a couple can share intimate space, a space where they unwind, get ready for the day ahead, sleep and also bathe. BLES R

UG, IVO

RY (Za n

ui) (RR

)

“The space is effectively three rooms cleverly connected as one. It can have the potential to close down into individual spaces or be open like we are used to at our favourite resorts, where the doors are mostly always open and those sharing the space always feel as if they are connected.”

pakmag

The trend leans towards visible baths - often freestanding - and in close proximity to the bed, allowing parents to chat, unwind or start their day while both going about required tasks. The toilet remains tucked away and private. The walk-in-robe may still be popular among builders but the architectural trend is now towards a more integrated storage solution, with a wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry replacing the walk-in as an option. This actually requires less floor space than a walk-in-robe and is a great option when planning a new build. If space permits, the parents’ retreat can even incorporate a separate sitting or living area which can be utilised as an alternative wind down space after the kids have gone off to bed. This is a great option if you are able to separate the parents’ retreat from other bedrooms in the home as it allows parents to have their own ‘wing’ in the home and offers additional privacy - a word many parents do not get to use often! Colour trends for the parents’ retreat keep the resort feel close at hand, with neutrals and soft monochromes prominent. The paredback Scandinavian-style continues to be highly popular and in North Queensland, elegant tropical style can also be incorporated through the use of wooden bed frames, neutral paint colours, soft, flowing fabrics, bright artworks and rugs. Unfortunately, the biggest downside of the parents’ retreat is the limitations it puts on existing homeowners. It is very difficult to adapt a home which does not already have an open-plan feel, however if you are considering renovations, removing some walls and rejigging the layout of a master bedroom and surrounding space should be within the realms of experience of an experienced architect, draftperson or builder. If achieving a parents’ retreat does indeed prove to be within your reach, the real challenge could then become getting the motivation to ever leave!

BABY BUNTING Have you started nesting? Are you collecting your metaphorical twigs – the cot, change table and pram – or perhaps diligently cleaning your home in anticipation of the pending arrival? Whatever this primal instinct drives you to do, preparing a nursery with some decorative touches is nesting put to good use. STORY Sofie Buchholz A baby’s first room is a unique opportunity to add a new touch of decorative styling to your home. Large changes such as a new paint scheme and the addition of nursery specific furniture can be further enhanced by adding smaller decorative touches such as wall art and soft furnishings. A popular DIY trend for nurseries is bunting. It is a great way to add instant texture and colour to the room while also helping to tie together chosen colours and themes.

Using the opening at the top, turn the flag through so the right side is facing out. Use a chopstick or pencil to help push out the point of the flag. Iron.

Using craft or hot glue, sandwich each flag between the two sides of a folder length of ribbon. Consider doing this in a two-step process. Firstly, glue the top of each flag to the bottom half of the ribbon. When dry, fold the ribbon over the top of your flag edge and glue down. This will give a neater finish.

To join the flags together, sew them inside a length of folded ribbon so that the top edge of each flag is sandwiched between the two sides of the folded ribbon. As an alternative to ribbon, sew together narrow strips of fabric to form a fabric ribbon. Pin the flags in place along the ribbon before sewing together to check the order of colours and the finished length of bunting. Leave a 20cm tail at each end of the bunting to help tie in place.

On your chosen fabrics, trace around your cardboard template and cut out the number of flags needed for your bunting. Each sewn flag requires a front and back to be joined, therefore one flag requires the template to be drawn around twice.

Follow steps 1 and 2 for the ‘sewn bunting’. However, as each flag is not being sewn together, you will only need half the quantity of flags, therefore one flag only requires the template to be drawn around once.

NOTE: How many flags you will need

to cut out will depend on the desired length of your finished bunting. Determine this by working out how many flags you need for one metre of bunting. The amount will depend on the top width of your bunting flag and the amount of space you leave between each flag when lined up together. As a rough guide, if your flag measures 20cm along the top and you have decided to leave no gap between each flag you will need 5 finished flags for one metre of bunting. For sewn bunting you will therefore need to cut out 10 individual flags as each flag has a front and back.

SUSTAINABLE

MOTHER EARTH – CARING FOR YOUR BABY AND THE ENVIRONMENT STORY Sophie Barrett Being sustainable can be hard for new mums especially when you are too tired to wash cloth nappies or cook wholesome meals and it is easier to buy new toys than search for second-hand bargains on the web. Although it is hard to resist the temptation of buying everything under the sun for your new baby, with some clever thinking it is still possible to spoil your baby while saving money and the environment.

CLOTHING AND TOYS If I had my children again I would buy more second-hand baby items. Prams, cots and toys are only used by your baby for such a short time. Buying second hand items is a great option and with the money you save you can hire a cleaner instead! • Inherit baby clothes and toys from friends who have older children or post a request on Facebook. • Make a list of gift suggestions or start a register to get what you need. • Ask people to make you a few meals or hire you a weekly cleaner instead of buying a present. • Consider searching through op-shops or buying second-hand items from Gumtree, eBay or Facebook’s ‘Cairns and Surrounds Buy, Sell, Swap’ for clothes and bigger items like prams, cots and bikes. You can also buy bulk bags of second-hand clothes online for boys and girls in any size. • Buy wooden or wind-up toys that last rather than battery-hungry plastic toys. Avoid loud or squeaky toys that may cause hearing damage.

FOOD The last thing that you will feel like doing at the end of the day with your new baby is cooking. Before you have the baby, invite family or friends to help you cook meals to freeze so that you don’t get tempted to spend money on takeaways. • Buy fresh local and organic produce and make meals to freeze for your baby in reusable containers. • Make snacks such as date balls or rusks (bread dried out in the oven) to feed your baby.

NAPPIES AND WIPES To save the expense and environmental impact of nappies and wipes try the following ideas: • Consider cloth nappies and training pants or look at a nappy supply and washing service to save time. If buying disposables, compostable versions are a good option. • Small face washers or soft cloths dipped in water with sorbolene cream make great wipes.

REDUCING CHEMICALS • Buy green cleaning products or make your own to reduce the amount of chemicals in your home. • Rinse fruit and vegetables before use. • Eating organic foods means that you can decrease pesticide exposure by 97 percent*. • Use BPA-free bottles.

SOLAR FOR THE NEXT GENERATION Often new parents first begin to consider how to be more environmentally conscious following the birth of their first child. The realisation that you are responsible for the environment this little person is exposed to, as well as looking after the planet that we will pass on to their generation often coincides with parenthood. Together with the cost savings that can come from installing a solar hot water system, the environmental benefits are something your children will appreciate as they grow. CMD Solar hot water systems are designed and manufactured locally for domestic and small commercial requirements. For more information visit website cmdsolar.com.au or call 1300 853 392.

SUSTAINABLE HOMES ARE ALSO SAFE HOMES Our homes are our shelter, they should be the safe haven to which we come home to, and we can be safe in the knowledge that our families, especially our children, are cared for. You would be surprised to find that many of our common building materials contain all kinds of chemicals and compounds. Choose low or NO VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) alternatives. They are readily available, and are usually minimal cost. When designing your home, choose an ergonomic design which suits your family’s needs and considers how you will use the home, e.g. do you want an oven low down under the bench top, or higher up out of reach of little fingers?

Our designs are suited for our tropical climate and our small team of professionals will assist you in ensuring you are building the safest home possible for your family.

To help your baby develop an appreciation of nature, find a friend and go out for a walk in your local area. Listen to the birds or sit on the grass in the park – it is all about developing their senses and helping them find their place in the world. TRAVEL

CAMPING WITH KIDS STORY Charlotte Aubin / Bog Out

Confidence Comes from Planning Ahead. Then add a Bit of Trial and Error. We were intrepid travellers, once. It was just the two of us, throwing everything into the four wheel drive and then adventuring into the bush to get away from it all. Then we became a family and my hair stood on end when I thought of toughing it out with kids, away from the safety and comforts of home. Okay, I admit it. Our first camping trip with the little one was a disaster. We didn’t even get to stay overnight in the tent, torrential rain and gale force winds backed my demands that we stay in the cosy cabins I’d seen an hour or two back up the track. After that, we eased our way slowly back into the scene we loved so well, as we learnt on the job. Why did we persist? Because a weekend’s camping is a whole weekend spent with your kids. It’s worth the extra workload and a few preparation headaches as your kids visibly start to unwind, interact with nature and bond with you. Get away from technology and spend time on old fashioned pleasures and your kids will seem healthier for it. Your kids will remember catching their first fish, or making marshmallows melt on the fire much more than their latest PlayStation score. What did we learn? Firstly, that if you’re going to camp with kids you need to be a bit - no - a lot more organised than before. Plus you’ll have to start organising and packing much earlier than before. Get the kids involved, let them pack their own backpacks and they’ll start imagining a night in a tent under the stars in preparation.

MAKE A LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU’LL NEED: • Camping and Recovery Gear • Food and Cooking Equipment • First Aid • Kids / Your Needs (Clothing , Nappies etc) • Activities

TRIAL & ERROR

WE KEEP OUR LIST HANDY AS WE PLAN. THEN, AFTER TRIPS WE ADD TO IT. CAMPING GEAR – until you’ve been a few times, you won’t know exactly what

you want. Put up a big tarp with rush matting floor underneath for a shady quiet area. Hammocks are a huge source of fun too. Borrow from friends or grab a bargain from charity shops, garage sales and Facebook groups. Camping is meant to be affordable.

RECOVERY GEAR – if you go off-road be prepared. The weather can be

wonderful for you all weekend but over the hills it has been raining. Suddenly your journey home becomes quite different.

FOOD – keep it simple, make a meal plan and shop accordingly. Remember to

add some basics so you can make damper or pancakes with the kids. Defrost a frozen favourite dinner on the journey then heat up for an easy first night. Remember to have your own water containers.

FIRST AID – expect the unexpected. KIDS / YOU – somehow it’s always colder and wetter than you expect. Remember to pack some extra layers even in our tropical summers. Kids can be too intimidated to “go” in the bush – a potty doesn’t take up much room. Torches are essential, pack at least one torch per person and add some extras.

ACTIVITIES – make the most of nature. Leave the laptop at home. Plan some ideas

at home like scavenger hunts and pack some outdoor activities such as totem tennis, sand toys etc. Card games, pencils and books are great for rainy days. I promise, you’ll find it easier to pack every time. Our friends even have a dedicated camping shelf made up in the car port so they can just load straight into the car. Living in North Queensland, it makes sense to have your tents, pots and pans, water containers etc ready to go. That way you are organised for a cyclone or tsunami evacuation too. So what’s my last piece of advice? Use the daylight! Don’t try chopping vegetables in the dark with your rugrat poking sticks at the fire. Make lunchtime your main meal and feed again well before dark. That way you can enjoy finding fuel for the fire and relaxing under the stars. So go on, get out there and relive some childhood fun. Visit the Bog Out website at www.bogout.com for a handy downloadable copy of the Aubin’s camping list and a Bog Out ladder board game that can be downloaded and printed for the kids to colour in.

PLAN FOR

FUN AT PLAN B

One of the very first things new parents (and mums in particular) may miss after the arrival of a new bub is the ability to kick back and relax in their favourite cafe with a coffee and some much -needed girl talk. So many cafes and restaurants make it impossible to maneuver prams and seem to resent the very presence of little ones in their establishment. By contrast, Plan B Cafe at Edmonton has been designed with parents and children in mind! Complete with a fenced indoor play area, toddlers and small children will love the ball pit, climbing area and toys on offer, keeping them occupied while you enjoy something off the extensive menu. Always a plus in Cairns, the cafe is air conditioned and spacious enough to accommodate several prams.

The cafe also features a market space, showcasing an array of local products ranging from jams and honeys through to handmade baby and children’s clothes. The extensive menu, including a wide variety of options for the kids, is all produced on site by owner Leigh and all produce is sourced locally. For parents looking for a party venue - look no further. Plan B’s bright and cheerful dedicated party room can accommodate up to 20 guests and requires minimal decoration for the perfect party atmosphere (and no clean up afterwards!) Party packages start at $12.50 per head and include homemade sausage rolls, cheerios, fairy bread, fruit platter, popcorn, plain chips, cordial and a lolly bag for each child. Also on offer is the cupcake decorating package, high tea style. Little chefs are offered a spider or iced chocolate and each child learns to decorate three mini cupcakes in a variety of styles using buttercream, fondant and assorted cutters. These can be themed for either

boys or girls with everything from zombies to princess parties! Parents are welcome to bring along their own birthday cake or cakes can be purchased from Plan B all cake orders receive a 10% discount if having a party there. Plan B Cafe also specialises in morning and afternoon teas for corporate meetings and functions. Platters are available in bite size canape portions, eliminating the need for plates. More substantial food is also available for lunch meetings. Options include scones (sweet and savoury), mini quiches, mini sausage rolls, sandwiches/wraps and mini cupcakes including corporate cupcakes which are great gifts and able to be customised with company logos or themed for functions or events. Plan B also offers catering for offsite baby showers, or they can be hosted on site at the cafe. It is also available for hire for family functions, Christenings and adult birthday parties at $50 per hour.

Plan B Cafe is located at 163-167 Bruce Highway, Edmonton. For enquiries or bookings phone (07) 4045 6307

PETS

Cairns Veterinary Clinic

INTRODUCING YOUR PET AND NEW BABY Congratulations! With a new bundle of joy on the way the ‘to do's’ might seem endless, but if you've already got a four-legged “First Baby" at home, preparing for the transition is an important item to add to your list. Check out our tips for before and after the big day arrives to make sure your household remains a happy one! PREPARING YOUR PET FOR YOUR NEW ARRIVAL • Visit your veterinarian for a health examination and ensure they are vaccinated, regularly wormed and treated for ticks and fleas. If your pet is not desexed it’s a good time to do so as desexed pets are generally calmer and less likely to be aggressive. Whilst you’re there get your pet a ‘pet-icure’ to avoid any accidental scratches. • Address any pet training and behaviour issues – If your pet’s behaviour includes gentle nibbling, pouncing, or swatting at you and others, talk to your veterinarian or a behaviour specialist about how you can redirect that behaviour to appropriate objects. • Consider enrolling in a training class with your dog – Training allows you to control your pet’s behaviour and enhances the bond between you and your pet. • Train your pet to sit calmly on the floor beside you before you invite them onto your lap.

• Accustom your pet to babies and baby noises – Introduce your pet to as many infants and children as possible during the preparation time. If you’re short on friends with kids, try using a baby doll. It may feel a little odd but it’s a tried and tested trick that works. Play recordings of baby sounds whilst rewarding your pet to create a positive experience. • Discourage your dog from jumping up at people and furniture. • Set up the nursery well in advance to give your pet time to get used to the furniture. If you plan to use baby gates install them now. Stock up on some basic supplies such as baby powder so your pet begins to get used to new smells.

AFTER THE BABY IS BORN • Before bringing your new baby home, take home something with the babies scent such as a blanket for your pet. • When you return from hospital, your pet will be eager to greet you and receive your attention. Remember to welcome your pet as normal

when you arrive home in a warm and calm manner. • Introduce your pet to your new addition slowly offering rewards for good behaviour. Make them sit and behave calmly. Never force your pet to go near the baby, and always supervise any interaction. • Ask visitors to make a fuss of your pet as well as your newborn when they visit. • Spend some one on one time with your pet each day to ensure they still feel important. For further information Dr Lewis Kirkham, a veterinarian and animal behaviourist, has published an essential book for dog owners who are expecting a baby. “Tell Your Dog you’re pregnant” is a step by step guide packed full of useful information, helpful tips based on the latest behavioural knowledge and a CD of baby and toy sounds to prepare your furry friend for the new arrival. This essential guide can be purchased at any of our three clinics.

RECIPE IDEAS

CAULIFLOWER CRUST SPINACH WHITE PIZZA INGREDIENTS CAULIFLOWER CRUST 1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets (should yield 3 cups of cauliflower rice) 1 free-range organic egg, lightly beaten ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese ½ teaspoon fine grain sea salt ½ teaspoon dried oregano ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper TOPPING ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup cooked spinach ¼ cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese Handful sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 220°C. Place a rack in middle. 2) Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and liberally grease with olive oil. Set aside. 3) In a food processor rice the cauliflower florets. 4) Transfer cauliflower rice to a microwave-safe dish and microwave on high for 8 minutes, until cooked. 5) Place the cauliflower rice in a tea towel and twist it to squeeze as much moisture as you can. This is very important. The cauliflower rice needs to be dry, otherwise you’ll end up with mushy dough. 6) Transfer the cauliflower rice to a mixing bowl, add egg, mozzarella, oregano, salt and pepper and mix well. 7) Using your hands, press the mixture onto the baking sheet and shape into a thin pizza “disc”. 8) Bake for 15 minutes, until golden. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. 9) Scatter mozzarella cheese evenly over the pizza base and spread the spinach over this. Sprinkle the Pecorino Romano and add a pinch salt. Return to the oven and bake for further for 10 minutes.
