Your Company / Career? Paleo Café started in Cairns in October 2012. The idea about Paleo came from Troy being born dairy intolerant forcing Marlies and I to learn about the effects of food choices and how these impact on health. Through the first few painful months of his life we had no sleep, a child spewing, screaming and generally unhappy, so we learned a lot about the Paleo Lifestyle. When we started Paleo Café I had been running my own finance business since 2007, Hobbs Financial Services. We always started Paleo Café with franchising in mind but never thought it would happen so quickly. In December 2013 I made the decision to sell Hobbs Financial Services to focus on the growth of Paleo Café and allow Marlies more time to spend with Troy. We now have 12 cafes throughout Australia with many more in the pipeline. It has been a wild ride the last 12 months, we have had to make sacrifices which has impacted on our family time and personal lives. It

is hard at times but we have a clear vision for Paleo Café and are working hard to see that realised. Challenging / Rewarding Aspect? Knowing when to switch off and spend time with family. I am known to have my phone attached to my ear even when kicking a ball or playing with Troy in the backyard, Marlies has posted quite a few photos on social media and it is a running joke amongst everyone at Paleo Café. I can honestly say I love what I do and have a genuine care for our entire Paleo Café team, I want to see them all happy and succeed and love being a part of that. The hardest part is definitely knowing when to switch off. The most rewarding aspect is the knowledge that we are improving the livelihood of our family in more ways than one. Through education on food choices and how that affects health and basic principles in life - if you want something then you have to work hard for it. Fatherhood Advice? A good friend of mine told me: “don’t find yourself wishing their life away.” By that I mean don’t say I can’t wait until they are walking and I can take them fishing etc. Enjoy the now as it disappears before you know it.

Becoming a father was the most exciting and grounding experience I have been through. It put everything into perspective and made me not take myself too seriously. Enjoy every moment and don’t forget to take time for the little things in life because they are what matter the most. I am still working on this!

Troy loves a joke, he cracks me up every day with the one liners that come from the mouth of a three year old. He often imitates what I do like mowing the lawn or talking on my phone all the time. He tells everyone that he is busy and talking on the phone like Daddy. Wish for Father’s Day? I'd like to spend time with my family either on our boat at the reef or skiing at the dam. Doing something we all enjoy as a family.

tackled the business and music world instead. Challenging / Rewarding Aspect? Challenging - prioritising physical activity (exercise) and also allocating downtime as the mind is always working on the next project. Rewarding - I am able to spend more time with the kids as I can usually set my own timetable and take a day if I really need to.

Your Company / Career? Grand Gazebos and Cubbies manufacture and build cubbies and gazebos and we ship them all over Australia. We make them all from scratch at our own facility and custom build for many childcare centres and private homes. I am also an entertainer, together with my band mates we provide quality entertainment including live music, kids entertainment and heaps more and do gigs between Cairns and Mackay. Needless to say I have left Science for later in my life and

away from my family is hard. I have been very mindful if I have work to do at home that this can be done once the boys are in bed so that from the moment I get home until the boys go to sleep I am spending time with them out in the yard playing games or reading books. The most rewarding part to parenting for me is knowing how dependant my kids are on me at their age and no matter how bad a day you have had when get home, or pick them up from daycare, you get the same reaction every time: as if they haven’t seen you for days.

Shane Muspratt is Queensland Development Par tner for Zambrero Australia as well as a well-known professional rugby league player, ha ving played for the Nor th Queensland Cowboys and the Parramatta Eels. He is marr ied to Rochana and has two sons Car ter (4) and Ethan (2).

Embarrassing Dad Moment? Would have had to be when we were getting photos done after the birth of Jordan and we were in the middle of photos when all of a sudden, he started peeing everywhere – it made for some great action shots. One thing you hope your kids learn from you, or don’t learn from you? I hope that they learn to be considerate of others and really see the good in people.

Your Company / Career? Zambrero is quick service Mexican restaurant franchise, that provides fresh, healthy Mexican food. I was first introduced to the product in 2012 by a friend I grew up with who is now my business partner Shaun McCarthy. Through a love of the product and its values, I got involved firstly as a franchise partner and have since been invited to oversee the QLD development.

Fatherhood Advice? Enjoy every moment you can, because they grow up so fast. I don’t think anyone ever understands that until you have kids, as it only feels like yesterday they were born.

Challenging / rewarding aspect? With kids it is always challenging to get that balance. In the interim of this role I was travelling a bit and to be

Learning Difficulties STORY Carly H a mmers l ey

In times gone by, a child acting out or considered “slow” compared to their peers may ha ve been an issue swept under the carpet and not thought much more about. Today, more is known about the link between health issues and learning or beha vioural problems in children. Every parent wants the best start in life for their child. But sometimes children can display behavioural or learning challenges that can leave even the most dedicated of parents shaking their heads. In many cases these episodes may be put down to rebelliousness or a “stage” every child goes through. Often it is the case that learning and behavioural problems in children can be traced back to issues such as auditory processing disorders, vision problems, food sensitivities, intolerances or even biochemical imbalances.

Certified Integrative Health Coach from ASD Healthy Life Rhonda Muller said it was only now becoming more readily accepted that nutrition can play a role in assisting with many issues including: anxiety disorders, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Aspergers, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Irlen Syndrome and Speech Delay. “ASDHL is particularly passionate about this, as our own children have had these challenges too. We focus on healing from the inside out, giving our babies the ability to reach their true potential.” Rhonda said food sensitivities and intolerances can often affect learning, with ASD providing treatment including testing, elimination diets and advice on how to heal the gut naturally. While nutritional issues may be difficult to initially diagnose, once identified it is often the case that small changes can have a very big impact on the

child, behaviour and wellbeing. There are other health problems which can see school-aged children being left behind in the classroom, without obvious cause. Dyslexia is one of the main learning disabilities that is now recognised in the classroom and commonly picked up by teachers. In the same vein, and not as well-known, are auditory processing disorders. Children with a Central Auditory Processing Disorders may have normal peripheral hearing but struggle to process auditory information which can lead to problems interpreting and recognising speech. CAPD can lead to or be associated with difficulties in learning, speech and language (including written language involving reading and spelling). These children also have a higher likelihood of behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. While the cause of learning disorders such as CAPD and Dyslexia (ADHD

and ASD) is still unknown, advances in brain research have identified that they are associated with ineffective brainwave rhythms. Too much or too little of a particular brainwave can result in slow processing, hyperactivity and an inability to focus and attend. Inattention is often missed in children with learning disabilities because parents see that their child can focus and attend when playing on the computer or with toys such as Lego. Mind Matters Cairns Psychologist Nia Barnes said it is normal human behavior that things we find interesting will always hold our attention but problems with inattention often surface when focus is required and we are forced to attend to things that might be thought of as difficult or boring. “Some children find it so difficult to stay focused for any length of time that they miss large pieces of information in class. This results in gaps in their learning. Over time these gaps become so big that learning becomes difficult.“ “Neurofeedback is becoming well known for its effectiveness in treating many conditions including learning disorders. It works by training the brain to produce more efficient brainwave rhythms, creating a brain that is more relaxed and focused which is an optimum and required state for learning. Neurofeedback uses the brain's ability for neuroplasticity to address issues at their core." One of the best ways to get a jump start on learning children is to simply read to children from a young age. Melanie von Bertouch from Coastal Kids Speech Pathology said reading and writing are language-based tasks and pre-schoolers with good oral

Se p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | w w w .pak mag . com. au

language skills usually go on to be good readers. “The process of reading and writing improves our oral language skills as we learn new vocabulary and sentence structures from what we are reading. As many as half of all poor readers have an early history of spokenlanguage disorders, whether this be that they started talking later than usual, were difficult to understand, had difficulty following instructions or used shorter, simpler sentences than their peers.” Melanie said one of the biggest predictors of literacy success in the early years is a skill called phonological awareness - this includes things like rhyme awareness, breaking words into syllables, being able to break a word up into its sounds and being able to move sounds around in words. Melanie said there were a number of ways parents could help to help prevent learning difficulties in pre-schoolers. “Read to your child every day. Use these times to talk about what might happen next, why characters did the things they did, and link it back to things they have experienced. Point out print in their everyday environment, logos, street signs, labels on food packaging. Introduce nursery rhymes, rhyming games, and alliteration. “But most importantly, let your kids see you using written language in a variety of ways - let them help you make a shopping list, follow instructions for putting together a new toy, or follow a recipe, as well as reading for pleasure.” These basic pointers will also allow you to keep an eye on how your

child’s eyesight may be developing, as vision is one of the key senses required for learning in the classroom and plays a major role in reading, spelling and writing. Parents may assume clear eyesight is all that is required for these tasks, when a variety of scanning, focusing and visual coordination skills are required for learning. While vision issues do not cause learning disabilities alone, they can impede normal development and interfere with the learning process so it is important that, should you notice your child having difficulty with their eyesight, they should be thoroughly tested and if necessary, have glasses prescribed to remedy the situation. Some signs of visual problems in school aged children include: • Holding a book very close • Holding their head at an angle when reading or covers one eye • Squinting, poor posture or moving head back and forwards instead of only moving the eyes • Poor attention span or drowsiness after prolonged work • Omitting small words • Re-reading or skipping words or lines unknowingly • Using a marker or finger to keep their place • Headaches after reading • Child fails to visualise (can’t describe what they’ve read about) Most school screenings only test the sharpness or distance of eyesight, so as a result many vision problems that impact on learning have a tendency to go undetected. However, having their eyes checked by an optometrist can provide an easy treatment and enhance the ability of your child to perform to their full potential.

17

STOR Y Megan C o l a ha n Fitting in play time with your children can be very difficult. Hectic schedules filled with work, school, sports, homework and countless other activities can make finding time to sit and play with your child seem like an overwhelming task. Some parents don’t like playing and they don’t realise that play is an important part of every child’s development. It is through play that children learn social skills and build confidence. Playing helps them to develop their language, communication skills and their imagination. Playing with your child builds your relationship with them and helps them to learn the skills to build relationships with their peers. Playing with your children can also lead to them being more cooperative. Parents often tell me that they find it hard to sit and engage their child in imaginary play. If that is the case, start with some structured games first. Parents who play with children regularly have more fun and feel happier as parents.

Tips to help you play Make time. Don’t wait for time to become available, build in set time to spend with your child and play. Even if it is for only short amounts of time, make sure that you play with your child regularly. Even just 10 minutes will do! When playing with your child don’t feel as though you must be in control. Let your child take the lead and don’t compete with them. Get down to your child’s level and give them your undivided attention. Turn off your phone and the tv.

It doesn’t matter if the play seems silly. Children need to be silly and so do adults sometimes. Try to relax and have fun.

PA R E N T I N G

Make Time For Play

If you don’t feel like joining in, then sit on the floor and watch. Comment on what they are doing and show an interest. Try to develop your playful side and laugh. Laughter really is the best medicine and it will help both you and your children to relax and feel more positive.

School camps have been a longstanding tradition in the Catholic schools of the Cairns Diocese, but the value of having school camps is becoming more apparent than ever before. Learning how to pitch a tent, boil a billy, cook their own food or light a fire are some of the skills taught to students at camp, but today’s camps have much more to offer. “Camps teach children an amazing set of life skills,” St Andrew’s Assistant Principal Religious Education Luke Felstead said. “We have spiritual retreats, teambuilding camps, leadership camps and practical camps. And they’re designed to also enhance social emotional skills like problem solving, overcoming fear, being more independent and learning to understand each other.” All camps are different for each school. Some feature trips to various townships like Longreach, some have excursions to historical towns like Chillagoe while others are closer to home on the Tablelands or in the Cairns region. Mount St Bernard College in Herberton offers a different type of camping opportunity for its students. “We go out on expeditions where we take the students out and teach them how to live in the bush, how to live together in that situation,” said Anne Quinn, one of two expedition coordinators at MSB.

“We all take our food with us and we take radios, camping gear, cooking gear, everything. We go away from civilisation and the students know that whatever is in their backpack is what they have to survive. It teaches kids a whole range of hands-on skills.”

Life Skills Learnt On Camp

The school has been running these expeditions for the last 10 years. “It definitely shows leadership,” expedition coordinator Peter Nightingale said. “And it’s amazing as a lot of kids will point out different bush tuckers and Indigenous historical sites to us, and it’s great to see them share their knowledge.” Mr Nightingale admits the expeditions are challenging for students. They are a week long in duration and students are away from their families, friends, computers and phones. “It’s amazing to see new friendships form between students who wouldn’t normally get to know each other otherwise,” Mr Nightingale said. “And there’s a significant improvement in teacher / student relationships because when you’ve got to cohabitate 24/7 a week, you develop a unique bond because you all see each other in a different light. “Teachers who do go on expeditions find it also improves their relationships with those students once they get back into the classroom.”

Deputy App

The G20 comes to Cairns in September, with the Finance and Central Bank deputies meeting from September 18-20 and the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governor's meeting to take place on September 20-21.

Deputy automates the process of tracking time and attendance and scheduling employees for businesses of all sizes. The cloudbased time and attendance software is designed to facilitate communication between business owners, managers, and employees, helping busy professionals stay in touch even while on the go. Up to 10 employees are free.

The event will be preceded by the Future of Tropical Economies Conference, with Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey confirmed as a keynote speaker at the event that will seek to address the economic challenges and opportunities that exist in the tropics. “A large part of Australia exists within the tropical zone and Mr Hockey’s participation in this conference acknowledges the importance of the tropics to the broader national economy,” Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said. “This conference will be Cairns’ key G20-aligned event, held in the days immediately preceding the Finance Minister's and Central Bank Governor's Meeting. “As G20 delegates prepare to assemble in Cairns to consider ambitious measures to achieve strong, sustainable and balanced growth; so too will leaders from across the tropics who are faced with creating a stable business environment that enables local communities to develop and grow in the tropics. “It will not only be an opportunity to showcase Cairns as an internationalstandard conference destination, but to lead the discussion on the further development of tropical economies in Australia and worldwide.”

TA S E A R LY L E A R N I N G C E N T R E

Why did i... Choose a TAS Education

Kathy has three other children who have all attended TAS prior to her youngest. Kathy and husband Tim also have Timothy, currently in year 10 and twin brothers Isaac and James, who are in year three at TAS. Kathy said she had heard wonderful things about TAS prior to enrolling her children and she knew those children loved it. “I really value the importance placed on social and emotional well-being at TAS. Things like getting along, working together and treating each other with respect and kindness, are key. Kids learn best when they are happy and what I can tell you is that my kids are happy to go to school, every single day.” “The smaller class sizes at TAS mean kids can get individual attention, as needed. Our kids are very well supported as individuals in their learning. This has been especially evident to us, as we have twins. They’re like our own little ‘controlled study’.”

TAS Kindergartens combine purpose built facilities with caring professional staff, a quality curriculum and an exceptional environment that delivers an education expected of Cairns’ leading independent school. All Kindergarten students benefit from being located close-by to the prep students, making the transition into prep easier as they are in a familiar environment and have the advantage of being able to utilise many of the prep facilities while still in Kindergarten. TAS Kindergarten offers an introduction to schooling through a five day per fortnight program which blends the freedom required at this tender age with the discipline of structured literacy, numeracy and the ever-important play based education programs, giving TAS students a head start for later schooling. The Kindergarten, located within the grounds of Trinity Anglican School, provides access to the school’s facilities including school halls, art studios, sport facilities, libraries, kitchen, gardens, playgrounds and the opportunity to interact with students and staff in the TAS Jump Start Prep programme. Currently, the TAS Early Learning Centre at White Rock is home to the TAS Kindergarten programme, building on more than 20 years experience in delivering leading Early

Years Learning programmes. In 2015, TAS will open a second Kindergarten at their Kewarra Beach campus, with applications now also being taken for enrolment at the new site. Kathy said the inclusivity of the Kindergarten program was a bonus for their family, with every opportunity for learning being maximised and an emphasis on making learning fun. “It is a wonderful Kindy program. Our little one can’t wait to get there. Kindy is also very much a part of the school community. The Kindy kids participate in school ceremonies, they have big buddies, and best of all in my little one’s eyes, they visit the school library. She loves that she gets to borrow books, just like her big brothers do. Her transition to Prep, and on through the years, will be seamless.”

Kathy Carruthers experienced the usual excitement and milestone of sending her daughter Lara to Trinity Anglican School (TAS) Kindergarten in 2014. But there was one marked difference that may have set Kathy apart from some of the other mums sending their child to kindy for the first time.

BUMP &BUB Bonding With Baby STORY Carly Ha mmers l ey No doubt about it, parenting is hard work. But no matter your occupation, it will be the most important kind of work a man can do. A consistent and frequent presence of a father figure in a child’s life has been proven to make a powerful difference in their development and socialisation - and there’s no better place to start than right from the moment they arrive! Early on in a baby’s life, new dads can often feel left out and unsure of their role when baby is born. During those sleepless first few weeks of your baby’s life, it can be hard for new Dads to find a groove. Unlike new mums, they may not have had as much time to realise that pregnancy results in a brand new little person and can spend the first few days in a state not dissimilar to shock! Given some time, Dad and baby will develop their own special bond. Here are our top tips for getting to know your bub from the kick-off: TRAIN FOR THE TEAM The only way to learn how to care for your baby is by doing it. There is no ‘practice run’ or ‘warm up lap’. Get in there and change that dirty nappy, give bath time a go, and do your best to offer comfort during those inevitable times when baby seems to be unsettled. Dads in particular seem to be able to offer a ‘magic touch’ during those rough night time hours when mum desperately needs

a break and to catch up on some much needed Zzzzzzzzz. Learn the football hold (which babies adore) and never look back!

baby’s outfit. If she happens to negatively critique what you are doing, remind her you need the practice and want to be involved.

TAKE THE TIME

DON’T SIT ON THE BENCH

If you're back at work following baby’s birth, try to make spending time with your baby part of your evening and weekend routine. Pop him into a baby carrier and go out for an after-dinner stroll. Or just sit together for a while and tell him all about your day. It’s a great way to give mum a break and of course, it’s never too early to start reading to your little one either.

In the early days, breastfeeding can be a marathon for mum and bub and take up a great deal of her time. Try to resist the temptation comment about how the couch may be her new home! You can help out by offering her snacks and drinks (breastfeeding mums particularly need to keep up their water intake). Score yourself even more brownie points by downloading a selection of her favourite TV shows or movies for her to work through.

STEP UP TO THE PLATE Your partner may feel like she's failing as a mum if she's not the one who feeds, changes, dresses and comforts your newborn 24/7. But it's vital that you take over from time to time. It’s important not only for your development as a dad, but also for your baby and for your partner's sanity. So even if she protests, jump in and take on some of those baby-care chores. STAND YOUR GROUND They probably won’t even notice they are doing it, but many new mums tend to undermine their partner's chances of success. Your partner may cut in when you’re hesitantly trying to change that first nappy or your

Once breastfeeding is established, you can give your baby a bottle of expressed milk. It will give you some quality bonding time, and your sleepdeprived partner will probably be eternally grateful for your efforts! SKIN TIME Newborns love having skin-to-skin contact. In fact, “kangaroo care” as it is known has been shown to have a multitude of benefits, especially for ill or premature babies. Mums aren’t alone in being able to provide this comfort, so get that shirt off, strip baby down and spend some time bonding. You’ll be surprised how quickly holding your baby will become second nature to you.

Croup Croup is an infection which causes inflammation and swelling of the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe). It is caused by a virus and results in a hoarse voice, noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. It mainly occurs in kids under five.

They like to move it, move it STORY Narelle Muller Keeping kids active is the key to a brighter future, says personal trainer Narelle Muller. It’s easy to look at your child and think, “It’s just puppy fat, they will grow out of it”. It’s equally simple to justify bad dietary habits and lack of exercise with excuses. However, that’s exactly what they are – excuses. The truth is, overweight kids are likely to grow into overweight teens, ending up as overweight adults with chronic health problems. With around a quarter of children either overweight or obese, along with well over half of Australian men (63%) and almost half of women (48%) and rising, it’s time to take responsibility and stop with the excuses. Children need daily physical activity to live healthy lives and figures show most young people get far less than the recommended 60 minutes of exercise daily. Movement helps bodies perform at their best - and who doesn’t want the best for their kids? But it is also proven to reduce many health risks. Building strength, bone density, healthy joints and muscles is all part of maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise is proven to help children in

other ways too. It allows for better sleep and reduces stress levels. By encouraging children to move more, we provide insurance for their health and wellbeing in the future. Entrenching good daily habits means you give your child the gift of a happy healthy lifestyle. AGES 6 -12 It is essential to lay the foundation for exercise habits now. Encourage kids to try sports and activities to see what works for them. Consider team sports, dancing, gymnastics, swimming, martial arts, as well as fun family activities such as bike rides, walks and outdoor adventures. AGES 13-18 Encourage teens to keep up daily physical activity as around the age of 13-15 years they tend to become more sedentary. Exercise will not only help with weight management, it also increases social interaction and self-esteem. Narelle Muller is a journalist/ health writer of more than 20 years’ experience and a personal trainer at Fit & Well. For more information contact 0412 745 519.

STORY Claire Stewar t

Croup normally starts with typical symptoms of a cold - runny nose, a slight cough and a temperature - then develops into the typical barking cough of croup (it can sound like you have a seal or a dog in the house!). The sound of the cough is caused by air going through their swollen, narrow airways. Unfortunately, croup often comes on late at night which can be very scary for both kids and parents. The cough can be worse if your child is upset or crying, so the first step is to try and comfort and calm them down. YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO SEE A DOCTOR URGENTLY IF: · They are having difficulty breathing or are breathing quickly · They are making a noise like a snore or a squeal when they breathe in or out ·

You can see the skin in between the ribs or at the base of the neck being sucked in and out when breathing (this shows that they are having to use extra muscles to breathe)

· They are suddenly very lethargic, sleepy or restless · There is a bluish tinge to their lips · They have difficulty swallowing or are drooling a lot If you have any doubts or worries, see a GP or go to the hospital. Mild croup can be treated at home with rest, paracetamol and extra fluids. Otherwise, it is usually treated with one or two doses of a steroid. This is very safe and works by reducing the swelling in the airways.

Boys Bedroom

HOME

S T O R Y C a r l y H a m m e rs l e y Boys bedrooms. It’s a subject that even the most enthusiastic home DIY decorator can find leaves them shaking in their boots! While parents may put a lot of thought into decorating the perfect little girl’s haven, sometimes individuality in boys rooms can be overlooked. The somewhat default racing car bed and lego-strewn room isn’t the only option and it is just as important for little guys to have their own individual space reflecting their own personalities as it is for girls.

02

You can create a modern, versatile, welcoming space that will grow as they do without spending the earth. A great place to start is by picking a colour scheme. Black and white is a classic, on trend combination and the brilliance of it is that other colours can be incorporated to add pops of colour or as a feature. Often, something simple like black and white can be more effective than drowning the room from floor to ceiling in a favourite colour (which, when prompted will no doubt be spiderman red, Octonaut

03

04

51

blue or perhaps even a graffiti-covered feature wall!) The other bonus about using basic colour combinations is you will find the majority of furnishing options are available in these colours and budget-friendly choices will be more readily available. You can also incorporate a love of lego, superheroes, or another favourite trend in a sophisticated way through the incorporation of modern, whimsical artworks and offbeat pieces. These can be removed and replaced as one trend is inevitably replaced with another without dating the bedroom as your funky little man grows into an opinionated tween. GET THE LOOK Ikea Ribba picture ledges are used for wow effect behind a basic white bedframe as a book and artwork display shelf. The ledges, priced at just $14.99 each and available in Far North Queensland through Sweden to You, are a fantastic cost-effective alternative to bookcases and take up much less space. They also allow books to be displayed with covers face out so they double as artwork and can be rotated to keep boys interested. The wall in this room has been decorated with a black and white star wallpaper, however if you’re feeling very creative, attempt a similar look utilising a large star wall stencil. Blackboard paint applied to a single section of wall allows children to add their own artistic touch to their room. For a statement piece to leave others for dead, Fromage la Rue’s Vegas Boneyard Letter Lights can be either wall mounted or placed on shelves and are around 60cm high. For a budget alternative, many craft stores stock wooden letters that can be painted to give an aged or industrial effect at a fraction of the price.

Wharf One:

For adult and kid fun! Ha ving a meal with kids where they are still free to be kids can be a tough find. Add in a wish to eat healthy with sustainable, locally - sourced produce and somewhere that caters to food allergies and one could be forgiven for thinking we’ve upped the bar to near impossible. Well, not anymore! Located at the Figtree Playground, which is directly opposite the Casino on the waterfront and just up from the Cruise Ship terminal is one of Cairns’ newest cafés. Introducing Wharf One on Trinity Inlet.Run by Caroline and Will who are both parents, this café has been well thought out and is a mecca for families! As it is located on Trinity Inlet- the views are spectacular and my boys absolutely loved watching the boats going past. The kids menu for breakfast was sensational and from $3 it is so affordable - when you get the bill you will think they have missed an item. The children’s menu includes boiled egg and soldiers, toast with spreads,

organic baked beans jaffle, ham and cheese toasties, or a fruit platter with organic yoghurt. They also have babycino’s for just 50 cents and milkshakes and banana smoothies which can be made lactose free. Once the kids decided what they wanted to eat, which was the Ham and Cheese Toastie and Baked Beans Toastie and a chocolate milkshake - they were off to play! The café is waterfront with clear unobstructed views so parents with toddlers will still need to be mindful, as in most places. It’s a fantastic spot to bring scooters, however the kids will gravitate to the Figtree playground - an amazingly designed playground that seems to strike a chord with kids of all ages (and adults too!) This gorgeous playground provides a natural setting which partners perfectly with the café. For adults the breakfast menu is sensational. With items from $4$14 you will find some great options like Wood Fired toast with spreads, Eggs Benedict with Ham, Tropical Fruit Plate with honey crusted nuts, lime and yoghurt, and lots more. I had the Smashed Avocado with

Misty Mountain Quark and lime on ciabatta bread and added an egg and Plantin Rosti. Trent had Poached eggs with local cane cured salmon. We were very happy with our choices and as a family that normally doesn’t dine out much due to being very fussy on the quality of food we eat and our youngest son Sean being lactose intolerant, we usually eat at home. But now that there is an affordable place with quality food using local produce, and the fact that I can take Sean for a milkshake - that is going to change! Wharf One also has a great lunch menu and caters for functions on or off premises. They are hoping to get a liquor license soon and will start doing dinners. Their coffee is amazing and is Madella Coffee from Mourilyan. Trent consumed three of them and even got another for the road! All in all, I can highly recommend Wharf One for breakfast, lunch or a morning or afternoon catch up with friends. We really enjoyed the food and location and can’t wait to go back.

STORY Bree Ja mes Allure Hotel and Apar tments is t h e l a t e s t a d d i t i o n t o T o w n s v i l l e’s accommodation market. As soon as I walked through reception, the crisp new smell made me sigh in anticipation of relaxation as I knew we were in a place of quality. As soon as we parked downstairs, the kids excitedly jumped in the elevator with what seemed like half of our house with scooters, toys, and food to feed half of the complex- but it was super easy to unpack the car and put it straight into the lift. And because there are only 2-3 apartments per floor, you literally hop straight out of the very quiet elevator to your room. The kids ran through each room and we were all excited to be in such a huge apartment with a beautiful view. We unpacked everything into the cupboards and drawers and instantly felt like we could live in the apartment forever! The Apartments and Studio Rooms at Allure offer some of the best outlooks in Townsville with all apartments enjoying panoramic views of Magnetic Island and the Townsville Marina. We spent much of our time sitting here enjoying the view. Our guestroom was a three bedroom, contemporary in style and very spacious. The kitchen had lots of mod-cons including stainless steel appliances, a full size fridge and dishwasher, oven, cooktop & microwave. Tea and coffee are supplied but make a trip to the supermarket to stock up on all the supplies you need to cook in the well equipped kitchens. If you don’t feel like cooking, there are many restaurants including the family

friendly Crown On Palmer downstairs and many takeaway options are all in walking distance. There is also a full laundry with washing machine and dryer in your room but you will only need to wash your clothes, as the apartments are serviced daily which is rare in this style of accommodation. The lounge and dining areas are very spacious and comfortable with a six seat dining table, and two couches. There is complimentary high speed Wi-Fi internet, flat screen TV's, and air-conditioning to make you feel right at home and comfortable. Most days we spent the morning having breakfast on the balcony, before a quick stop at the gym and pool. Then a day out exploring the city before sunset drinks back on our balcony. Allure is located only minutes from Townsville Airport, the Aquarium and Museum are in view from your room, and the Strand is only five minutes’ drive away. Your room is just steps from fine dining, bars and shopping on the ever popular Palmer Street. All in all we had a great week at Allure and can highly recommend it for a trip for the family, a couples weekend away, or solo business traveller.

is a great island for families, base yourself at the famous Waikiki Beach then explore the island at your leisure visiting places like Pearl Harbour and Honolulu Zoo along the way.

STORY Kylie St o k es Nothing beats a road tr ip and explor ing at your own pace gives you freedom to enjoy your tra vel at leisure uncover ing hidden gems along the way however it does pay to do a bit of planning in advance, par ticularly when travelling with kids. After deciding where you want to go you will need to decide whether you want to hire a car or a motorhome and there are pros and cons for both options. Hiring a motorhome means that you’re travelling with your accommodation and have more flexibility about where you stay however it can be difficult navigating traffic in large cities with these. If driving a car and staying in hotels is more your style then, depending on which destination you choose, you may want to do a little more planning particularly in peak season as accommodation can be limited in smaller towns and villages over these times so you need to be prepared to keep driving if you can’t find somewhere to stay. GREAT DRIVES There’s a great drive destination to suit every family, from the beautiful coastal scenery of our very own Great Ocean Road, to the iconic Route 66 which combines vibrant cities, and the nostalgia of a bygone America. Choose a destination that has plenty of regular and interesting stops and get the kids involved by giving them maps so they can track your journey and mark off where they’ve been. A travel journal or scrapbook is also a great way of keeping children interested along the way - they can draw and write about where they’ve been and collect stickers or post cards.

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD - explore one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world along the Great Ocean Road, before heading inland to experience the scenic Grampians and historic Ballarat.

ROUTE 66 – the ultimate American driving adventure. Whether it be the history of the Wild West and pioneering days or simply the intrigue of driving where many thousands of explorers have been before you, this legendary road trip will captivate you.

EUROPE – there is a fantastic network of holiday parks throughout Europe including France, Spain and Italy, with accommodation ranging from cabins to tents (permanent tents with kitchen facilities). This is a fantastic option as they are designed with families in mind with onsite restaurants, pool complexes and many have Kids Clubs available which is extremely hard to find at standard hotels in these regions.

Top Tips 1_ It is essential to book early, particularly for school holiday periods, your Travel Agent will know the best time of year to book for each destination.

NEW ZEALAND – one of the best countries you can visit for a selfdrive holiday. The roads are easy to navigate with stunning scenery, extremely welcoming locals and plenty of attractions to interest kids.

2_ International driving permits are not compulsory for every country however they are recommended for most so it’s worthwhile getting this before you leave. 3_ Make sure that the vehicle you are hiring has a concealed storage compartment or boot. Leaving luggage and personal effects visible may attract thieves and if items are left unattended this way you may not be covered by travel insurance if they are stolen. 4_ Check that your travel insurance covers car rental excess.

HAWAII – from beautiful scenic drives and beaches to visiting volcanos and waterfalls, Hawaii has it all. Ohau

5_ One way fees can be expensive in some countries so it is important to check this before starting to plan your itinerary as it may be better to pick up and drop off at the same place.

PETS

Always Expect the Unexpected “If only we had Medicare for pets” Most of you probably have family health insurance, but are your pets included? Probably not. If you don’t have health insurance, you are fortunate enough to have access to Medicare and the PBS, which means you rarely pay the full cost of health care. Because of this, many people don’t realise how expensive human health care really is. Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses truly love animals and are in this profession to keep animals happy and healthy. There is nothing worse than being faced with a well loved family pet with a bone fracture or a new puppy or kitten with a serious illness, and an owner who hasn’t planned for unexpected illnesses / injuries within the household budget. Our pets are part of our family and we all want the best vet care for them when they need it. If your pet gets really sick, you expect modern equipment and facilities as well as highly trained and caring veterinarians and nurses. The best veterinary care doesn’t come cheap, but if it saves your pets life, it’s worth it. The biggest problem can be affording the cost of vet expenses when you least expect it. Responsible pet ownership involves a real commitment to your pet in many ways, but providing them with

the best healthcare available to keep them healthy and happy is probably the most important. Pet insurance allows you to budget monthly for those unexpected veterinary bills that you may otherwise be unable to afford. Having pet insurance means that at the time of a veterinary emergency, your focus is on what is the best treatment for your pet, rather than distressing about how you are going to pay the Vet bill. There are a number of pet insurance policies available. When looking for a plan, be sure to compare policies carefully to avoid getting a policy that is too expensive or has inadequate coverage. Petplan Insurance is the world’s No 1 pet insurance provider and they have a range of policies, including multiple pet discounts, to suit your budget and needs. Cairns Veterinary Clinic, in conjunction with Petplan insurance, exclusively offers 4 weeks free insurance for all dogs and cats from 8 weeks of age to 1 year. Visit Cairns, Aeroglen or Gordonvale Veterinary Surgery to activate your free cover or contact our friendly staff if you have any further questions regarding pet insurance for your animals.
