editors note Hello and welcome to the 43rd edition of PakMag, our back to school and summer holidays extravaganza! We have covered everything for your family for the holidays, plus lots of tips for easing your kids in to school. As you can see, Jordan has finally had a haircut which was way overdue according to some people but I loved his surfy dude long hair. Now he looks all grown up like a proper little boy. Further to his escape tricks mentioned last month he is no longer sleeping in his cot. He now spends most nights sleeping wedged behind the bedroom door, or walking around the house in the middle of the night. It’s an intricate process pushing the door open with his weight behind it to put him back to bed without waking him. I’m not sure why he thinks the floor is so comfortable. He’s also started having a few tantrums, and isn’t even two yet, so god help me.

Story thanks to Dr Bill Sultmann

Starting school is a big step for children and it takes time to get used to it but they do best when their parents and teachers work together to support them. ‘rocking’ kids club When I think about rock climbing I usually conjure up images of Tom Cruise hanging upside down off a cliff in Mission Impossible. It’s not an activity I imagine the average child or adult engaging in with all the muscle and technique required. By Angelina Mortley However, my opinions of rock climbing have changed thanks to the Cairns Recreation Centre who have just installed a brand new, indoor rock climbing wall that is an absolute must do for the whole family. As it turns out, you really don’t need to be super athletic to scale a rock wall. Secretly I have always wanted to try rock climbing so I volunteered to go along and try out the new rock wall with two 5 year olds in tow – one who had never seen a rock wall and the other who had some experience. I started on the beginner wall and surprisingly found that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I wasn’t scared because I was concentrating so hard on where to put my hands and feet and

40

www.pakmag.com.au

I also found it exhilarating as I gradually nudged closer to the top. At the top I was encouraged to “just push out from the wall and let yourself abseil back down”! No one prepared me for that little leap of faith but once I managed to let go it was a total rush and I couldn’t wait to give it another go. How did my 5 year old companions go? They were absolute naturals and easily clambered up the wall like little spiders. CRC’s rock wall is one of the most unique systems in Australia, featuring a Stalic Tite structure which is a large cone-like rock suspended from an overhang. This provides a good challenge for those who can actually reach it! The wall is just short of 6 metres high and has been constructed using the latest technology – the surface is

sprayed sandstone which makes gripping a lot easier. The automatic belaying system also eliminates the need for a second person and all those extra ropes. There are four rope stations and up to 24 different climbs to challenge advanced as well as beginner climbers. The grips are moved around every four weeks so regular climbers can always be assured of a new test. Casual entries are $15 adults, $10 kids (under 12yrs), $45 family (2 adults + 2 kids) and $10 student/concession, plus harness hire of $5 per person. There are also multi-visit, group and school holiday passes as well as Rock Stars Kid’s Club Membership and fully catered birthday parties.

Potts, one half of the Sea FM morning crew, continues his chronicles of first time fatherhood The New Year brings exciting times and also throws up a few questions. For example, does Noah need a little brother or sister to play with? Will any of our grandparents move to Cairns to help us out with babysitting? Will the Aussie cricket team win a test match? We always intended having a sibling for Noah but the real question is when? Kylie prefers sooner rather than later; I say let’s get through the first one and then think about the next. So, we’ve compromised and decided on a 2-year age gap so that means I’m going to be busy soon. I learned a valuable lesson the other day. Noah loves swimming in our brand new swimming pool and sitting in his little floaty ring so the other day when we got back from a walk I decided we should cool off in the pool. I couldn’t be bothered to go inside and get a pair of disposable swimmers and thought Noah would enjoy a nudie swim for a change. This was a great idea until he got out of the pool and started walking around on the new white pavers. Suddenly he grabbed himself and starting doing a wee which we thought was hilarious. But then we soon stopped laughing when it was followed by a runny number 2 splashing down his legs and on to the pavers. Obviously I had to clean it up and I managed to clean most of it off him but another quick dip in the pool really cleaned him up well. Does anyone fancy coming round for a swim?
