BIRTHING YOUR BABY

A

s your belly expands, your body is busy preparing for the finale – the birth of your baby. No one can predict just how your labour and delivery will go. While you are given an estimated due date, most babies don’t really care about this and will choose to make their grand entrance when they see fit. Furthermore, the average length of labour for a first time mum is 12 to 14 hours; but, again, most babies don’t get this memo and many take a lot longer (or shorter) time to come into the world. An estimated 66 percent of mothers will have a vaginal delivery but caesarean sections are a perfectly safe alternative if a vaginal delivery is not possible, not safe or if that is the mother’s preference. You may experience only minor pain, minimal pushing and minor tears or you may need to be induced, receive pain medication and require stitches to help with recovery. The best way to prepare for this grand event is to know what to expect in any scenario, to go with the flow and to rely on your chosen support and medical team to advise you along the way.

Birthing Your Baby

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

W

here you choose to give birth, whether at a birth centre, at home, at a private hospital or at a public hospital will depend on your budget and where you feel most comfortable.

North Queensland has all of these options including a public and private hospital in Cairns, a public and private hospital and Birth Centre in Townsville and a public hospital and Birth Centre in Mackay. There are also hospitals in Atherton, Ayr, Innisfail, Babinda, Bowen, Mareeba, Moranbah, Mount Isa and Tully as well as Community Health Centres scattered across the region that can assist you during your pregnancy. Another option is to consider a home birth with a qualified doula or midwife present which can provide a more personal birthing experience. There are plenty of government funded and privately run programs to help you prepare for the upcoming birth of your baby including ante-natal classes, calm birth courses and positive parenting programs. You may also want to look into a birth photographer if you would like to capture this amazing experience on camera.

What are my options?

CARING FOR MUM & BUB

C

aring for a newborn doesn’t come naturally for everyone. It will take time and patience to get the hang of things and to learn to understand your baby’s cues and needs.

During the first year your baby will do four main things – eat, sleep, play and poop. However, in addition to feeding her, helping bub settle into a good sleep routine, offering plenty of stimulative play and changing countless nappies, caring for your newborn also involves A LOT of late night feeds and early morning cuddles. As your baby enters the second part of her first year, you can also add things like sitting, crawling, climbing and exploring to his day, which means you will become a master of supervision and safety! Your baby may require additional assistance from health professionals, especially if he has a medical condition, is not gaining adequate weight or is not meeting his milestones (within reason). Another important thing to remember is that many parents (both mums and dads) experience post-natal depression or anxiety. There are a number of services that can offer support and treatment. If you are struggling, the best thing you can do for yourself and for your baby, is to ask for help.

CARING FOR YOU - During Pregnancy

P

regnancy is one of the most exhausting, but exciting experiences you will go through. You can expect a whirlwind of physical, emotional and (for some) lifestyle changes ahead.

CARING FOR YOU

Putting your little one first means putting yourself first. This means sticking to a healthy diet, increasing certain vitamins and minerals vital for your pregnancy and maintaining a moderately active lifestyle. It also means reducing your intake of certain foods and drinks, cutting out other habits completely, getting adequate sleep and minimising stress levels. This is all easier said than done. There are a number of things that can impact your ability to do this – morning sickness, chronic pain, tiredness and perinatal depression and anxiety, for example, can all cause even more strain during your pregnancy. North Queensland has a number of locally run services which can help ensure that you remain mentally and physically well. All pregnant mothers will need to see either their GP, a midwife or an obstetrician on a regular basis to confirm everything is on track throughout the pregnancy. Some of the additional providers that can assist you during your pregnancy include: nutritionists and naturopaths, acupuncturists and chiropractors, massage therapists, personal trainers and yoga instructors, midwives and mental health nurses.

Ante-natal Appointments The journey to pregnancy for everyone is a different story but one thing that is always the same is that what you do with your body once you are pregnant no longer only affects you, it affects the beautiful new life you are creating too. Regular ante-natal appointments allow your doctor or midwife to closely follow your baby’s growth and monitor you both for any health problems or risks that might develop, including risks to your physical and emotional health. The best thing is that by regularly attending these appointments any problems that might arise can be detected early and therefor can be treated early. Use your ante-natal appointments to talk about any concerns or to raise any questions you may have about your pregnancy and your care, get as much information as you can to ensure your journey is everything you want it to be.

Eating for Two It is no surprise that considering that your body is now sustaining two lives that it requires a richer fuel to go the same distance as it did before. Don’t suddenly feel that you have to eat double the amount, what you need to aim to do is not necessarily increase your actual amount of food but rather increase your nutrient intake. Eat a wide variety of healthy foods, including lots of water and wholegrains. A daily serve suggestion would be to aim for 2 serves of fruit, 5 serves of vegies, 2½ serves of dairy or alternatives, 8½ serves of grains and 3½ serves of lean meats, nuts and legumes. It is really important to make sure you reduce your risk of Listeria and Salmonella by avoiding ready-to-eat chilled food, soft cheeses, raw eggs and undercooked food, especially meat. Always store and prepare your food hygienically and never drink alcohol when pregnant.

Feeling Stressed… It is sometimes hard to believe that at a time when you are so happy and excited about being pregnant that you may find yourself feeling stressed. Rest assured knowing that stress is a normal reaction to changes and challenges, even good and exciting ones. You may feel over anxious about the beautiful little life you are creating. Add to that the well meaning bombardment of ‘helpful’ information, advice and stories from family and friends. It really can all be very overwhelming. While some stress can be helpful, as it gives you the motivation and focus to face challenges and get things done, too much stress is not good as it can affect your body, thoughts and feelings and make it difficult for you to cope with everyday tasks. Exercise can improve your mood and it is perfectly safe to exercise during pregnancy (after consultation, see page 33). Gentle exercises such as swimming, aqua classes, yoga, pilates or all excellent. If you didn’t exercise before you were pregnant, now might be a good time to start. Check out the array of specialised pregnancy classes offered in your area, they are sure to make your journey as stress free as possible. 32

Consult Before You Exercise Now you are pregnant there are certain things you now need to consider before you step out for your next workout. There are changes that are happening in your body that will affect your ability to exercise and will require you to modify your exercise routine to accomodate them. When pregnant you have an increased risk of joint injuries(sprains) as hormones such as Relaxin loosen the ligaments. Your balance and co-ordination will also be affected as, as your pregnancy progresses changes in your body shape consequently affects your body’s centre of gravity. Pregnancy also increases your resting heart rate, so using your target heart rate to work out the intensity of your exercise is not recommended. In the second trimester your blood pressure drops and it is important to avoid moving rapidly from lying to standing and vice versa so as not to experience dizzy spells. While it is important to keep these things in mind the benefits of regular exercise during pregnancy cannot be emphasised enough. Exercise assists in better weight control, improved mood and maintenance of fitness levels. Remember though before exercising when pregnant, consult your doctor, physiotherapist or healthcare professional. Health Providers TOWNSVILLE

Development Milestones

L

earning Disability is defined as ‘a condition giving rise to learning difficulties, especially when not associated with physical disability’. In reality, learning disabilities can range from difficulty learning to read and write to the more severe cases, where dependence on others for daily life is necessary. If your GP recommends that you do see a specialist here are some specialists in your area that might be able to assist you.

Diagnosis

S

HELPING BABY

evere learning disabilities are typically diagnosed at birth or in very early childhood and generally, signs of developmental issues will be picked up by paediatricians.

Mild and moderate learning disabilities are sometimes harder to diagnose and are often not noticed until a child starts school. Looking out for potential signs of mild or moderate learning disabilities and paying attention to developmental milestones is important for early diagnosis. With early intervention, children often show improvements in their ability to learn and perform tasks they may have been struggling with. Keep a lookout for the following signs in your under five year old: • Difficulty pronouncing words, learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes, etc. • Difficulty following directions/ learning routines. • Difficulty controlling pencils or colouring within lines. If you notice these things in your child, seeing your GP is your first port of call. Early intervention can be the key to ensuring children with learning disabilities have the best chance of reaching developmental milestones. Your GP will refer you to appropriate specialists if required.

BABY’S FIRST YEAR

BABY’S FIRST YEAR

T

he most important thing to remember is that your infant’s first year is about him or her. It is not a race between infants or a competition with other mothers. It is an individual journey that you and your little one get to go on together. Your baby will grow from a helpless newborn to an independent oneyear-old in the blink of an eye. The first three months, known as the fourth trimester, can be difficult for many mums.

YEAR ONE

As your little one learns the difference between the womb and the world, she will need help with this transition. She will look to you to comfort her, to cuddle her and to reassure her that it’s okay. Knowing you are responsible for providing her with the confidence and skills to explore this new world can be overwhelming and exhausting, but it is also so rewarding. Once your bub gets the hang of this whole ‘outside the uterus’ situation, he will start to develop more of a personality. Laughing, giggling, clapping, jibber jabbering, rolling over, sitting, crawling, pulling himself up, exploring tastes and possibly even walking are all on the agenda. As you can imagine, your baby will be over the moon with all of these newfound skills. And the best thing about your baby’s first year is that he gets to enjoy every moment, every milestone and every messy mishap with you by his side.

Welcome

BABY’S FIRST YEAR

41

F

eeding your infant can be a beautiful bonding experience, regardless of whether you are bottle feeding, breast feeding or mixed feeding.

Breast feeding, although natural, doesn’t always come naturally and it can be challenging, stressful and, at times, painful. There are lactation consultants, health nurses and helplines that can support you during this process.

FEEDING

If you choose to bottle feed, then you can rest assured knowing all infant formulas in Australia are guaranteed to provide your baby or toddler with the nutrition he needs. Later, as your little one embarks on his journey towards weaning, you can expect plenty of mealtime memories and messes along the way.

fter you and your infant have developed a bit of a routine, you may want to look into the community activities to connect to other parents in your area, to introduce your infant to the amazing world around him and to develop your child’s early learning skills. Organised activities vary depending on the time of the year and the area in North Queensland where you live. Some entertainment ideas include: library programs, GymbaROO, Kindermusik classes, swimming lessons, baby massage courses and Kangatraining.

Catholic Education

EDUCATION

It’s never too early to start thinking about a quality education for your child. Catholic schools remain an affordable option for most families. Many are pleasantly surprised to find that the cost of a Catholic school is much less than that of a Private/Independent school. In fact, if you can afford kindy fees, you can afford Catholic school fees. There are also options for those in genuine financial difficulty too, including automatic fee discounts for holders of means-tested Health Care cards. The demand for places in many Catholic schools, has never been higher but you don’t have to be a Catholic to enrol. Preference is given to students of the Catholic faith, particularly those active in their parishes but Catholic schools are open to all who seek and support Catholic school values. Catholic schools do not have quotas for the number of Catholics or non-Catholics they accept, nor do Catholic schools have catchment areas. Each enrolment is assessed on its merits against the enrolment criteria. Enrolment procedures are managed individually by schools. It is best to contact the Catholic school you are interested in to enquire about when to apply for that school. There are many good reasons to consider a Catholic school for your child. Make an informed decision by visiting www.cns.catholic.edu.au, download the brochure and check out the ‘Enrolling’ section. See advertisement inside front cover for more info.

BABY’S FIRST YEAR

Education

THINKING ABOUT EDUCATION

N

o doubt, the furtherest thing from you mind when you are holding your newborn in your arms is which school am I going to send them to, but considering daycare, Kindergarten and school options early on is recommended. Daycare centres can have very long waiting lists. If you have a particular centre close by that you are hoping to use make sure you go and see them early on to discuss your future needs. Whether it’s for a day or a week, early application is essential.

YEAR ONE

The same waiting list also applies to Kindergartens. The places available in these are also tight and applications can open years in advance, so if you leave it to the last minute you may miss out on your preferred chosen Kindergarten. Have a discussion regarding school choice early on too. Sounds crazy but pre-planning for being in the correct catchment zone of your preferred State School or within close proximity to the Independent, Private or Catholic School of your choice may affect any real estate decisions you make in the next few years. When you gaze into your beautiful baby’s eyes and envisage all you dream and hope for them, their education suddenly doesn’t seem like such a silly thing to be thinking about now.

THINGS TO BUY FROM BUMP TO BABY

Welcome

THINGS TO BUY FROM BUMP TO BABY

W

hen you have a baby, it’s easy to get carried away and BUY ALL THE BABY THINGS! But you really need to restrain yourself, especially during the first year. Trust me, you will have plenty of time to spoil your infant with countless toys, gadgets and clothes in the many years to come. You will only need to worry about feeding bub milk during the first few months (but this may also mean you need a breast pump, bottles, steriliser, etc.). Then you will need to look into weaning equipment including a high chair, baby food or a blender to make your own creations.

Your bub’s wardrobe requirements will depend on the season but you can expect to need plenty of onesies, sleepers and a sun hat. You will also need nappies and wipes by the truck load.

Welcome

THINGS TO BUY

Your baby will need a cot, a bassinet or a co-sleeper to sleep, a pram or carrier for outings as well as a car seat or baby capsule. Other things to consider include swaddles/blankets, a change table, a rocker or glider, mats, nappy bags, toys, books, bouncers or swings. The list really does go on and on and on…but this is all part of the fun!

SHOPPING FOR MUM

Gift Suggestions Becoming a mum whether for the first time or more is always very special and friends and family can’t wait to shower new mums or mums again with gifts. So often however, these gifts are really for the bub so if you want to give a gift that is really for the mum here are a couple of ‘out of the box’ ideas: 1) A cleaning company voucher, having someone to come and help when it’s all got on top of her can be a sanity saver (Mums will never ask for help, but if its from a paid stranger they will accept it). 2) A pampering voucher(with baby sitting included), giving her even an hour of ‘me’ time is a gift that will be remembered. 3) A gift voucher for a professional photographer, including a makeover for mum. Precious photos with bub, with mum actually looking un-frazzled, will be forever treasured.

Nesting

Shopping for Mum

THINGS TO BUY FROM BUMP TO BABY

THINGS TO BUY

Often just prior to the arrival of a new bundle of joy, mums to be can go through a “nesting” period of compulsive cleaning and some might say a lining of the “nest”. A need/desire to buy every single baby item that they have ever seen or heard of to ensure that they are prepared. While it is true that it is good to be prepared, be prepared with the essential things, but try not to go overboard on the non-essentials like fancy clothing. Newborns are showered with little outfits and you won’t be short of something for them to wear. If your desire to spend is too strong to resist, if the excitement and wish to give your soon to arrive bundle everything, know you are not alone. But be smart about it, consider buying in a range of clothing sizes, there is no rule that says you can’t pre-buy that gorgeous outfit that they are so going to rock at nine, 12 or 18 months. You won’t regret having these larger sized little treasures in the cupboard to pull out. 57

Earth Toys Choosing ‘Good Toys’ for the Baby & Toddler Years Babies and toddlers are as pure and as natural as it comes and contrary to popular promotions they do not require fancy gadgets with flashing lights and loud sounds! Young children can often get over stimulated by high tech battery operated toys and this can lead to attention difficulties later in life. Two words, simplify childhood. For the most part get you child out in nature, the natural curiosities of playing in grass, water, dirt and the sand will simply fascinate them! But when it comes to introducing your baby to the world of toys we prefer simple and ‘open-ended’ toys that can be used in many different ways and encourages your child to use imagination, creativity and problem-solving skills. 0 to 3 Months Eye Sight is Focusing: Babies are very sensory and will put nearly everything in their mouths. There are a few simple toys we love that encourage babies to explore safely while stimulating the developing senses of hearing, sight, smell and taste! • Mobiles • Baby Gym’s • Car Seat Toys • Pram Toys 4 to 9 Months Teething & Tactile: Now your baby is starting to push through those first teeth and enjoys sucking and chewing on everything they can find, simple wooden and natural rubber toys are perfect for this! • Rubber Teethers • Fabric Comforters
