Hello and welcome to the 75th edition of PakMag! Can you believe the school holidays are almost here again! Check out pages 47-48 for our full rundown of activities. This month our attention is on dads. My dad is a big kid and I have many fond memories of him cracking raw eggs on my head before school and playing hide and seek in black so we could never find him (while he dressed us in fluoro!). I am really looking forward to spoiling Trent on Father's Day, he is such as amazing dad and the bond he has with our boys is wonderful to watch. To all the other amazing dads out there, we hope you have a wonderful Fathers Day 'month'. Pop along and join us on 22 September for our special Daddy's Day Out (see inside for more info). Until next time, have a wonderful month, and remember tell everyone, you read it in PakMag.

In your mind, your future may remain uncertain until the divorce is finalised, but reassuring your kids that everything will work out will help them feel more secure and confident It is vitally important that you remain attentive to the needs of your children throughout the unpleasant process of separation. In some cases, you must go to great lengths to make sure they feel stable and secure in their home environment. These tips may help:

SUPER Changes

Super Self-Employed

Many mums are choosing to become selfemployed after starting a family, which means they no longer have the benefit of employer paid super contributions.
Hardly a year goes by without our system of retirement saving being fine-tuned. This year, assuming there are no changes again following the election, one of the key initiatives announced is that from 1 July 2013, super funds will start to offer a new type of super account called MySuper. This replaces ‘default’ accounts – those super funds chosen by employers when an employee doesn’t nominate a fund of their own. You would think that when it comes to something as important as our long-term savings, which is what superannuation is, most people would take an active interest in where their money goes. In fact, that’s often not the case. About 80% of workers let their employer make that decision, so a vast amount of money ends up in default funds.
employer must pay more into your super each year, with compulsory contributions progressively rising from the present 9% of your base wage or salary up to 12% over the following seven years. It’s a reform that recognises many of us will need a lot more to live on in retirement than our current rate of super contributions will provide.
The whole point of MySuper is to provide a simple, low cost super fund for those workers who don’t nominate their preferred fund. It’s worth clarifying that MySuper is not a new type of superannuation scheme. Instead, it is an option that will be offered by most existing super fund managers and it may be marketed under a variety of names.
No doubt the latest round of super changes won’t be the last. The key thing is that super is your money for the future, and taking an active interest in where – and how – it is invested will pay dividends in retirement.
Another notable change that has also taken effect from the beginning of July is that your

Before acquiring a product, suitability should be determined after reading the relevant product disclosure statement.
According to research by Australian Super Funds Association, a quarter of self-employed Australians have no superannuation. While some self-employed people plan on selling their business to fund retirement this is not a foolproof strategy since the business may be hard to sell or not worth as much as you think, especially without your involvement. So don’t neglect your super - start building a separate pool of retirement savings.
TAX Refunds Sensible ways to spend a tax refund: [1] Pay off credit card debt or loans [2] Make an extra repayment on your mortgage [3] Contribute to your super [4] Put it in a high interest savings account [5] Consider investing www.pakmag.com.au

Eczema is a common skin condition that has tripled in Australia during the past three decades, with up to 30% of children and 10% adults being affected. It can be debilitating and a constant source of irritation, pain and, in some cases, embarrassment.

A recent study found that ‘ultra-cleanliness’ contributed to the likelihood of a child developing allergies and skin conditions such as eczema. After surveying more than 11,000 children it was found that children of parents with the highest standards of cleanliness are up to three times more likely to develop allergies and skin problems such as eczema. The study found that children with eczema were most likely to be the cleanest and the most washed. Experts believe that higher levels of hygiene are contributing to the rise in allergies and asthma because the immune system ‘fails to wake up’ and that early exposure to germs gives children protection against developing allergic conditions. Australian Dermatologist, Dr. Ann-Maree Kurzydlo says “The bottom line is that hygiene is important to prevent disease and illness, but too much disinfection may actually have a negative effect for some kids. Obviously genetic factors are still the main culprit when it comes down to the root cause of eczema and allergies but over-bathing, including the use of anti-bacterial soaps and regular use of hand sanitisers, may be doing more harm than good.” www.pakmag.com.au

Interesting Ingredients How many times have you heard the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover”? This is something you may apply to people but the same idea could apply to food. The blurb of a book is usually the deciding factor to buy or not, so why not treat the ingredient list of a food product as a blurb and see whether it will deliver the healthy goods! By Rebecca McKenna Many foods are packaged to draw the eye, with bright colours and pictures of our favourite stars or athletes to sell more products. However, even if a food has a package that looks good the food may not necessarily be a healthy option. So how do we interpret the ingredient list? Firstly, all products that have been manufactured and then sold in Australia must contain an ingredient list. The ingredient list is in order of the main ingredient first to the smallest ingredient last. If a sugar or fat are one of the top three ingredients, it is probably not a healthy food. Sometimes there are things in the ingredient list that we are not sure of and some of the things that often catch us out are when different names are used for things such as sugar and fat.

Other names for sugar = sucrose, fructose, dextrose, glucose, lactose, brown sugar, cane sugar, caramel, golden syrup, molasses and honey
What a versatile veg the capsicum is! It can be eaten in a delicious crunchy salad, or cooked up in a yummy Mexican feast. Capsicum comes in a variety of colours,
Other names for fat = oil, lard, shortening, milk solids, ghee, copha, cream, butter, cocoa butter
which also means a variety of vitamins and minerals. Capsicum is a fantastic source of Vitamin C, naturally low in fats and sugars and dependent on the colour
The ingredient list is also where you will find if any additives are contained in the food, which is a good guide for parents of children with allergies or behavioural issues. For a complete list of food additives visit the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand website (FSANZ).

TEAM recipe
TOPPINGS: Tomato Paste, Tomato Sauce or BBQ Sauce Choose from any of your favourite toppings – I used the following: Mozarella cheese, mushrooms, capsicum, cooked chicken, anchovies and fetta
Mix all the base ingredients in a bowl except for the olive oil and then knead. Cover with glad wrap and allow to rise in a warm place for 1 hour. Pre-heat oven to 180oC. Once dough is ready, add olive oil knead briefly. Cut dough into 3 portions. Roll out each portion on a lightly floured bench. Using a spoon spread the sauce to cover the base. Next, add a little cheese. Then evenly spread out the remaining ingredients on base. Top with a little more cheese and fetta. Place in oven for 20-25 minutes. Cut into 8 triangles and serve. Yum!

It becomes a vicious circle - they are more likely to dislike reading, they read less, and then they fall further behind. The ‘Let’s Read’ program is an early literacy program that aims to encourage parents and caregivers to share words, rhymes, songs, stories and books with their children aged 0-5 years. The campaign is based on research from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne and has eight key messages for parents: • Share rhymes, songs & stories with your child every day. While sharing books is best, early literacy development is fostered through sharing words and symbols, songs and nursery rhymes, as well as oral stories. • Words are everywhere Look for words and involve children in letters and sounds in the world around them e.g. street signs, grocery packaging, etc. • Read, play & learn with books Make reading fun by including it as part

Arthritis may be a human condition but it also affects animals. In dogs it is quite common, affecting more than one in five. In cats the condition is equally as common but often goes unnoticed as they adapt extremely well to disabilities. This painful degenerative disease can occur at any age or weight and at its worst, especially if left untreated, can cause chronic pain, movement difficulties and a decline in quality of life.
• Have difficulty walking, running or jumping?
There are four important areas of therapy for managing arthritis: 1) Good nutrition It has been proven that feeding a good quality food rich in EPA and omega 3 fatty acids, such as Hills Prescription Diet J/D, slows the deterioration and helps your pet retain more cartilage. Joint problems are also aggravated by obesity so it’s important for your pet to maintain a healthy physique. Feeding them a diet such as Hills J/D can also reduce the amount of painkillers your pet needs to take, resulting in lower costs and the reduced risk of problems occurring from the possible long-term side effects of medications.
3) Environment Ensuring that your pet has a well padded, warm bed away from draughts will help reduce the stress on the joints. Reducing the number of stairs or the steepness of the slope your pet must navigate to reach their bed will also help to reduce discomfort. 4) Effective medication Treatment for arthritis will often include medications that protect, nourish and lubricate joints. There are many medications available for the treatment of arthritis, such as daily medication and weekly injections. Nutritional supplements that promote cartilage formation and reduce inflammation in the joints are also often recommended. If you think your pet may be suffering from arthritis, help make them happy and enjoy life again; call us at any of our three convenient locations to make an appointment.
2) Exercise Over-exertion will put an excessive strain on the joints, however not enough exercise leads to greater stiffness and muscle wastage. Gentle regular exercise such as short walks or swimming are best as this keeps the joints moving and the muscle in tone.

Voodooz Cajun Kitchen is the brainchild of local musician Jason Smith and his wife Jodie. For those parents who used to love the occasional night out dancing, you might remember Jason as 'the amazing drummer from the Swingin Alley Catz’, a band that played at Vertigo Bar & Lounge nearly every Saturday night for the past decade. Not only is Jason a fantastic entertainer, he is also a father of six kids, so as you can imagine he knows how to look after families and we felt very welcome from the moment we set foot in his restaurant. It really is like stepping into his home, albeit with a few extra cool trinkets and statues that will have your kids looking around fascinated while you check out the menu. like I’ve eaten there. The night we were there a couple from New Orleans were sitting nearby and they said the food was spot on. The most memorable dishes aside from the above were the Watermelon Salad, Creole Prawns, and our favourite, if you are an oyster lover - battered oysters with Cajun mayonnaise. The kids are also well taken care of with $12 kids meals that include a Voodoo Doll to take home (our boys loved them). Littlies like ours can share
The desserts are also amazing. Pecan Pie with Bourbon Sauce is to die for, as is the Key Lime Pie. If you happen to be out in town anytime this is also a great place to pop in later for a yummy cocktail, nightcap, coffee, and/or dessert and watch some live music. If you want a restaurant for your family that has a unique, laid back ambience, Voodooz Cajun Kitchen have the right recipe for an unforgettable dining experience.

It’s a fabulous restaurant for those with tweens, especially those that are budding musicians. Jason's restaurant attracts all the local muso's who have a night off so there is always an array of talent floating around every night to do a
