In fact, babies are looking for that bond.” Experiments have found that newborns can recognise their father’s voice from the womb and when eye contact is made will actively gaze at their father’s face. “They don’t just casually glance at them, they really stare at their dads and we now realise what’s happening there is that the connections in their brains are linking up to not just remember that face but to understand what that face is thinking,” he says. Dr Fletcher decided to write the book for those well-meaning future dads in his antenatal classes who wanted to be engaged fathers but just didn’t know how. “The men around now are different from their own fathers in that they

“Once you let go of the idea that mothers are the template parents and dads are the helpers, then you can see that yes, dads do do it differently, but that’s good for children,” he says. “It’s not that dads are just second rate mothers.” He gives an example of this from the research on child attachment. Academics working in the area have found that it’s important to act as a safe base for children. This allows them to explore the world while knowing that if hurt, upset or frightened they have someone to come back to. “Well of course mothers do that in a whole host of ways, but fathers do that too. We now think that fathers are perhaps even more adept at saying ‘ok you’re right now, let’s go’ and encouraging them to get out and explore again.”

identified as the skills we need in order to be successful in the 21st Century. These skills are often referred to as being ‘higher order’ thinking skills. George Bernard Shaw once said something along the lines of, ‘95 per cent of people never think once in their lives and most of the other five per cent only think that they think.’

Usually it is young children who drive their parents to distraction with the ‘why?’ question but maybe it should be the parents who are asking the question.

If we are to be truly thinking people we have to learn how to be open to challenging our own assumptions about the people, circumstances and issues we may be facing. All of us go through life with filters on. Our culture, upbringing, education and life experiences all create filters through which we view the world around us. These filters prevent us from seeing the whole picture, which obviously means that the choices and decisions we make may not be as effective as they could be. However, most people rarely think

6

www.pakmag.com.au

One of the best life skills we can pass onto our children is to encourage them to keep asking ‘why?’ as they grow older. And, while we expect our children to accept the answer ‘because,’ we should never be satisfied with that answer from either ourselves, or our children. 21st Century skills require us to learn to identify our filters and to think about why we think a certain way about an issue. The process may not change our opinion or our approach, but we will know why we think that way. More often than not, the exercise of thinking about why we think a certain way about something will allow us to consider other points of view. It is only when we consider other points of view to our own that we can give meaning to why we think the way we do. So, start asking your children ‘why?’

They are unintentionally limiting the breadth of their child’s experience and ability to learn. Formal education in the form of school and extracurricular classes need to be balanced by relaxed ‘play’ time in older children. SUPER Changes

by Gail Glasby

News money

Super Self-Employed

$ $

$

Many mums are choosing to become selfemployed after starting a family, which means they no longer have the benefit of employer paid super contributions.

Hardly a year goes by without our system of retirement saving being fine-tuned. This year, assuming there are no changes again following the election, one of the key initiatives announced is that from 1 July 2013, super funds will start to offer a new type of super account called MySuper. This replaces ‘default’ accounts – those super funds chosen by employers when an employee doesn’t nominate a fund of their own. You would think that when it comes to something as important as our long-term savings, which is what superannuation is, most people would take an active interest in where their money goes. In fact, that’s often not the case. About 80% of workers let their employer make that decision, so a vast amount of money ends up in default funds.

employer must pay more into your super each year, with compulsory contributions progressively rising from the present 9% of your base wage or salary up to 12% over the following seven years. It’s a reform that recognises many of us will need a lot more to live on in retirement than our current rate of super contributions will provide.

The whole point of MySuper is to provide a simple, low cost super fund for those workers who don’t nominate their preferred fund. It’s worth clarifying that MySuper is not a new type of superannuation scheme. Instead, it is an option that will be offered by most existing super fund managers and it may be marketed under a variety of names.

No doubt the latest round of super changes won’t be the last. The key thing is that super is your money for the future, and taking an active interest in where – and how – it is invested will pay dividends in retirement.

Another notable change that has also taken effect from the beginning of July is that your

Before acquiring a product, suitability should be determined after reading the relevant product disclosure statement.

According to research by Australian Super Funds Association, a quarter of self-employed Australians have no superannuation. While some self-employed people plan on selling their business to fund retirement this is not a foolproof strategy since the business may be hard to sell or not worth as much as you think, especially without your involvement. So don’t neglect your super - start building a separate pool of retirement savings.

Eczema is a common skin condition that has tripled in Australia during the past three decades, with up to 30% of children and 10% adults being affected. It can be debilitating and a constant source of irritation, pain and, in some cases, embarrassment.

A recent study found that ‘ultra-cleanliness’ contributed to the likelihood of a child developing allergies and skin conditions such as eczema. After surveying more than 11,000 children it was found that children of parents with the highest standards of cleanliness are up to three times more likely to develop allergies and skin problems such as eczema. The study found that children with eczema were most likely to be the cleanest and the most washed. Experts believe that higher levels of hygiene are contributing to the rise in allergies and asthma because the immune system ‘fails to wake up’ and that early exposure to germs gives children protection against developing allergic conditions. Australian Dermatologist, Dr. Ann-Maree Kurzydlo says “The bottom line is that hygiene is important to prevent disease and illness, but too much disinfection may actually have a negative effect for some kids. Obviously genetic factors are still the main culprit when it comes down to the root cause of eczema and allergies but over-bathing, including the use of anti-bacterial soaps and regular use of hand sanitisers, may be doing more harm than good.” www.pakmag.com.au

Capsicums

Interesting Ingredients How many times have you heard the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover? This is something you may apply to people but the same idea could apply to food. The blurb of a book is usually the deciding factor to buy or not, so why not treat the ingredient list of a food product as a blurb and see whether it will deliver the healthy goods! By Rebecca McKenna Many foods are packaged to draw the eye, with bright colours and pictures of our favourite stars or athletes to sell more products. However, even if a food has a package that looks good the food may not necessarily be a healthy option. So how do we interpret the ingredient list? Firstly, all products that have been manufactured and then sold in Australia must contain an ingredient list. The ingredient list is in order of the main ingredient first to the smallest ingredient last. If a sugar or fat are one of the top three ingredients, it is probably not a healthy food. Sometimes there are things in the ingredient list that we are not sure of and some of the things that often catch us out are when different names are used for things such as sugar and fat.

Test your knowledge by answering the below questions:

1) Why are Green Sea Turtles called green? 2) How many species of sea turtle are there? 3) How many species of sea turtle are found on the Great Barrier Reef? 4) What is the average life expectancy of a Green Sea Turtle? 5) What is the most dangerous time in a sea turtles life? 6) How big do Green Sea Turtles grow?

Outdoor R ooms

from Bold Interiors The Man Standing Zone (aka The ‘BBQ’) A BBQ area is obviously a core part of any outdoor design. These days, outdoor kitchens with built-in barbeques, are very popular. They can be costly but there are plenty of options around if you can’t afford the luxury of a fully kitted outdoor kitchen.

Select hardwearing furniture such as stainless steel and natural timbers, especially if they’re exposed to the elements. Check out The Outdoor Furniture Specialists timber lounges.

Integrate functional storage solutions into furniture pieces. The humble bench seat is great for concealing everything from kid’s toys to eskys.

• Consider vintage benches and aged timber that help to create textures reminiscent of nature. • A fireplace/pit is a great addition for the colder months. Otherwise choose soft cushions and patterned throws (Try Déjà Vu on Sydney Street) • Create texture underfoot with sisal rugs. They are hardwearing and add warmth in winter. Shading You may need to consider shading depending on your aspect and exposure to the elements. There are a multitude of options available from large umbrellas, outdoor blinds, shading cloth and exterior curtaining. They may not always be practical but flowing curtains cordoning off a private terrace look stylish and romantic. Greenery Making a connection with nature is vital in an outdoor space. Whether it’s hanging fern pots or vertical gardens, greenery helps create a relaxed and harmonious outdoor area. A fragrant herb garden will impress your guests and it can be used in the cooking too. www.pakmag.com.au

Window Coverings diyhome

By Sofie Buchholz

Curtains are one of the most versatile and cost effective options for window coverings. They add instant colour, pattern and warmth to a room.

[1] TYPES Readymade curtains can be purchased in three main styles: eyelet (similar to those featured), tab or pleated. They each look and hang differently and may require a different track system. They vary in cost, ranging from around $5 to $100 per curtain, depending on the size and style and whether they are sheer or block out. Specialised curtain fabric can also be purchased from fabric stores. These may be wider or backed with special light restricting material. Readymade curtaining can also be purchased by the metre from fabric stores such as Spotlight.

[2] DESIGN TRICKS You can link the curtains to other decorative elements in a room by painting the curtain rod in a colour that highlights a colour in a cushion or picture. Readymade curtains can also be personalised by adding decorative touches such as stitching on ribbon, strips of fabric or applique. Children’s curtains look great with bunting attached.

[3] HANGING TIPS To determine the amount of fabric needed for a particular window, measure the curtain rod or track systems. The amount of fabric required to cover a window is between one and a half and two and a half times that track measurement. Generally, more fabric is used for lighter curtains such as sheer drapes. Hang curtains to the floor to help lengthen the look of a space. If making them, ensure that you double the hem, as this will add weight and improve the overall look of the curtain.

Fun for Kids

By Amanda Cranston

Kids love being able to help out in the kitchen and there are lots of great child-friendly products on the market to make cooking and baking fun.

Whether it’s helping to bake a cake, get school lunches ready or preparing dinner, kids love to get involved. However, they are also very good at making a mess so family kitchens need to be fun but also very practical.

Getting Started: • Notes & Lists – Shopping lists are a great opportunity to learn some literacy and a blackboard makes it fun • Hooks – Aprons are a must for kids in the kitchen so make sure you have somewhere to hang them up • Storage – little chefs will want some of their own equipment so allocate a drawer or cupboard space where the kids can keep their own utensils • Recipes - smaller children can quite happily play alongside you with their own ingredients but older children will want to create ‘real’ food and this is a great learning and bonding experience in families. Thanks to Masterchef there are an increasing number of good cookbooks available for kids if you want to start teaching them some basic cooking skills. swimming

cARs • utes • 4WDs • buses • tRucks

There’s a lot more to swimming than splashing around in the backyard pool but how do you know when your child is competent enough to stop swimming lessons?

The question of when and how children should learn to swim is under constant scrutiny given the tragic level of childhood drowning. And, despite the overwhelming evidence of the benefits of starting swim lessons under five years of age (recently confirmed by a Griffith University study), many parents still do not choose to commit to learn to swim lessons for their children.

[4] Children do not have skill retention until about 7 years of age

If you didn’t start swimming lessons early don’t worry, but do it now! If your child is fearful of the water they can still flourish in a swim school that recognises each child’s differences and shows patience and praise.

[7] Swimming is a wonderful cross training sport for all other sports

For those parents who discontinue lessons because their child can ‘sort of’ do strokes and ‘they’re not going to be an Olympic swimmer’ consider the following: [1] Swimming is the only ‘sport’ that also provides a life saving skill [2] It can provide an entry to many other aquatic activities [3] Like any other skill it must be practiced to be retained

[5] Swimming is a skill that can then be retained for life [6] Just because a child can ‘swim’ in their backyard pool does not mean they are safe or are actually able to swim effectively

The most common stage that parents drop their children out of swimming lessons is when they believe their child can safely swim in a backyard pool. I believe this puts the child at a higher risk, as you believe they are safe when in fact they are not. The key benchmark of swimming competence according to the swimming industry is when children can swim a kilometer of freestyle with good technique and can tread water proficiently for at least 15 minutes. Children will only achieve this level of competence and good stroke technique from ‘learn to swim’ professionals, preferably in a small group situation. If you are relying on the school to teach your

child to swim, be aware that school programs are carried out for a short time and are not geared to instruct your child individually.

Transitioning to swim clubs The biggest mistake that parents can make is to transition a child into a swim club too soon. I would advise keeping your child at a swim school that focuses on fun, technique and fitness over small distances to ensure correct technique is retained before progressing to a swim club. If they have an undeveloped or poor technique, swimming long distances with large groups causes fatigue and a breakdown in technique. These children will need constant stroke correction to avoid their poor technique becoming a learnt skill that is impossible to correct. Swimming clubs and other aquatic sports and activities provide a fantastic opportunity for fun, friendship, fitness and/or competition but ensure your child has a solid background, obtained from a technique focused learn to swim school, before they join.
