A lengthy process ensued and the Pettigrews were finally allocated a three-month old baby from Taiwan. “We waited four months for permission to travel and finally Ross, Chelsea and I flew to Taipei to meet our precious boy and expand our family.” The Pettigrews completed the adoption process and in 2006 were allocated their son, Joseph Roy Sheng-En. The greatest challenges Ross and Peta faced with the adoption process was the lack of control. “When other couples decide to have a child, they have control, when you are infertile; nothing is in your own control. Get Set for Year 7 Local Catholic schools are planning for the introduction of Year 7 to Secondary in 2015 In 2015, Year 7 will become part of the secondary setting in all school sectors throughout Queensland. The move will be a significant change for both Catholic primary and secondary schools. However, we believe it is the right decision if Queensland is to maintain a world-class education system. Since the introduction of Prep, students will be an average of six months older when they reach Year 7 and we believe ready for the challenges of the specialist teaching programs the secondary school setting provides. Importantly, the move will more closely align our school structures with both the delivery of

the new Australian curriculum that is now being implemented, and with the other states. Over the next three years Catholic education will work with principals and school communities along with the State government to ensure this major reform is successfully delivered with the interests of students, teachers, staff and their families paramount.
Enrolling in Year 7 and 8 in 2015 In 2015, we will have two new groups of students enrolled in secondary. If your child is in Year 5 or 6 in 2013, they will be due to start Year 7 or 8 as part of secondary in 2015. Enrolments for both Year 7 and 8 (for 2015)
will be processed from Term 2, 2014. Children who attend a Catholic primary school are guaranteed a place at a systemic Catholic secondary college*, provided applications are received by the set due date. Children who are in Year 5 or 6 in 2013 at a Prep-12 college will follow regular continuing enrolment processes. Enrolment information is available on the Townsville Catholic Education website: www.tsv.catholic.edu.au *Ignatius Park College and St Patrick’s College are not systemic Catholic schools. Please consult directly with the college for enrolment information and processes.

SUPER Changes

Super Self-Employed

Many mums are choosing to become selfemployed after starting a family, which means they no longer have the benefit of employer paid super contributions.
Hardly a year goes by without our system of retirement saving being fine-tuned. This year, assuming there are no changes again following the election, one of the key initiatives announced is that from 1 July 2013, super funds will start to offer a new type of super account called MySuper. This replaces ‘default’ accounts – those super funds chosen by employers when an employee doesn’t nominate a fund of their own. You would think that when it comes to something as important as our long-term savings, which is what superannuation is, most people would take an active interest in where their money goes. In fact, that’s often not the case. About 80% of workers let their employer make that decision, so a vast amount of money ends up in default funds.
employer must pay more into your super each year, with compulsory contributions progressively rising from the present 9% of your base wage or salary up to 12% over the following seven years. It’s a reform that recognises many of us will need a lot more to live on in retirement than our current rate of super contributions will provide.
The whole point of MySuper is to provide a simple, low cost super fund for those workers who don’t nominate their preferred fund. It’s worth clarifying that MySuper is not a new type of superannuation scheme. Instead, it is an option that will be offered by most existing super fund managers and it may be marketed under a variety of names.
No doubt the latest round of super changes won’t be the last. The key thing is that super is your money for the future, and taking an active interest in where – and how – it is invested will pay dividends in retirement.
Another notable change that has also taken effect from the beginning of July is that your

Before acquiring a product, suitability should be determined after reading the relevant product disclosure statement.
According to research by Australian Super Funds Association, a quarter of self-employed Australians have no superannuation. While some self-employed people plan on selling their business to fund retirement this is not a foolproof strategy since the business may be hard to sell or not worth as much as you think, especially without your involvement. So don’t neglect your super - start building a separate pool of retirement savings.

Eczema is a common skin condition that has tripled in Australia during the past three decades, with up to 30% of children and 10% adults being affected. It can be debilitating and a constant source of irritation, pain and, in some cases, embarrassment.

A recent study found that ‘ultra-cleanliness’ contributed to the likelihood of a child developing allergies and skin conditions such as eczema. After surveying more than 11,000 children it was found that children of parents with the highest standards of cleanliness are up to three times more likely to develop allergies and skin problems such as eczema. The study found that children with eczema were most likely to be the cleanest and the most washed. Experts believe that higher levels of hygiene are contributing to the rise in allergies and asthma because the immune system ‘fails to wake up’ and that early exposure to germs gives children protection against developing allergic conditions. Australian Dermatologist, Dr. Ann-Maree Kurzydlo says “The bottom line is that hygiene is important to prevent disease and illness, but too much disinfection may actually have a negative effect for some kids. Obviously genetic factors are still the main culprit when it comes down to the root cause of eczema and allergies but over-bathing, including the use of anti-bacterial soaps and regular use of hand sanitisers, may be doing more harm than good.” www.pakmag.com.au

Interesting Ingredients How many times have you heard the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover”? This is something you may apply to people but the same idea could apply to food. The blurb of a book is usually the deciding factor to buy or not, so why not treat the ingredient list of a food product as a blurb and see whether it will deliver the healthy goods! By Rebecca McKenna Many foods are packaged to draw the eye, with bright colours and pictures of our favourite stars or athletes to sell more products. However, even if a food has a package that looks good the food may not necessarily be a healthy option. So how do we interpret the ingredient list? Firstly, all products that have been manufactured and then sold in Australia must contain an ingredient list. The ingredient list is in order of the main ingredient first to the smallest ingredient last. If a sugar or fat are one of the top three ingredients, it is probably not a healthy food. Sometimes there are things in the ingredient list that we are not sure of and some of the things that often catch us out are when different names are used for things such as sugar and fat.

Mix all the base ingredients in a bowl except for the olive oil and then knead. Cover with glad wrap and allow to rise in a warm place for 1 hour. Pre-heat oven to 180oC. Once dough is ready, add olive oil knead briefly. Cut dough into 3 portions. Roll out each portion on a lightly floured bench. Using a spoon spread the sauce to cover the base. DATE
m i n i mag T r i v i a Sea turtles have existed for over 100 million years, and they travel throughout the world’s oceans. However, they are now struggling to survive largely because of what humans are doing to the planet’s beaches and oceans. They are an important part of the Great Barrier Reef’s ecosystem. Test your knowledge by answering the below questions:
1) Why are Green Sea Turtles called green? 2) How many species of sea turtle are there? 3) How many species of sea turtle are found on the Great Barrier Reef? 4) What is the average life expectancy of a Green Sea Turtle? 5) What is the most dangerous time in a sea turtles life? 6) How big do Green Sea Turtles grow?

get to school. As they progress through school, these children are also unlikely to catch up to their peers. It becomes a vicious circle - they are more likely to dislike reading, they read less, and then they fall further behind. The ‘Let’s Read’ program is an early literacy program that aims to encourage parents and caregivers to share words, rhymes, songs, stories and books with their children aged 0-5 years. The campaign is based on research from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne and has eight key messages for parents: • Share rhymes, songs & stories with your child every day while sharing books is best, early literacy development is fostered through sharing words and symbols, songs and nursery rhymes, as well as oral stories. • Words are everywhere Look for words and involve children in letters and sounds in the world around them e.g. street signs, grocery packaging, etc. • Read, play & learn with books Make reading fun by including it as part of an everyday routine.

Even after all this there were still four treatments left – a Strawberry Rhubarb Masque, Couperose-C Serum, Wild Plum Eye Cream and, last but not least, a Sour Cherry Whip Moisturiser. Unbelievable! After our treatments were finished we were led into a little tea room to relax with water and tea. Lighting – Make sure your desk is well lit so if your study nook is not under a ceiling light or next to a window you may need to invest in a good desk or reading lamp. Furniture – Obviously you will need a desk and a chair, but a bookshelf is also a good investment to store books, folders, homework, pen holders and other smaller supplies. You can also use storage baskets on the bookshelves to keep homework supplies. A pin board, white board or blackboard is also useful for recording important dates and deadlines. Homework Supplies – There are lots of stationery goodies that make homework fun and efficient so make sure you have a good supply of essentials like pencils, a rubber, sharpener, ruler, stapler, hole-punch, paper clips, glue sticks, sticky tape, calculator, blank notepads and

SouthPacific paradise
By Jodie Payne (Travel Managers) Choosing a holiday destination to suit the whole family can be a challenge, especially if your children are quite young. The South Pacific is always a fantastic choice for families because the flights are fairly short, there are many great hotels with kids clubs and importantly, it’s safe. Here’s a rundown of the different islands: Fiji Warm water, wonderful people and an abundance of family friendly resorts and it’s only 3½ hours from Brisbane. Some of the best family resorts with kids clubs include The Outrigger and The Shangri-La which are located on the Coral Coast, about an hour’s drive from the airport. Slightly further up the coast are The Warwick and Naviti. All of these hotels have meal plans you can pre purchase (including drinks) so you can budget more easily. If you are looking for an island resort then head to Castaway Island, Plantation Island or Malolo. Vanuatu Vanuatu is a great option for families who want adventure mixed with lazing on the beach. Vanuatu is made up of a series of islands. The island of Santo is surrounded by crystal clear water, superb coral reefs and shipwrecks so it’s ideal if your family loves snorkelling and diving. If a beach holiday is more your style, then check out the Warwick Le Legon Resort and Spa or Iririki Island Resort on the edge of the Erakor Lagoon. Kids clubs are available at both properties. Samoa
Top Tips [1] Look out for stay/pay deals at hotels during the low

If you’ve already been to Fiji or Vanuatu and you want to experience more authentic Polynesian culture then maybe its time to try Samoa. It’s a little further to fly there (approx. five hours from Sydney or Brisbane) but once you’re there you can explore jungle trails, inland waterfalls and rugged mountains. Accommodation-wise, Aggie Grey’s Lagoon Beach Resort and Spa is perfect choice for families since it has a great free kids club and is located on a white sandy beach.
Fiji. Four days of nanny service (8 hrs a day) for a super cheap price.
[3] Ask for a car seat for your transfer service from the airport to the hotel. [4] Portacots and high chairs etc can all be pre-arranged for you at the hotels. [5] Travel insurance – always strongly recommended when travelling with
