Hello and welcome to our October edition. The big news this month is that we've enrolled Jordan for Prep, he is so excited and is talking about "big school" every day. Sean, on the other hand, is being a total ratbag, constantly stirring Jordan up by taking food off his plate, running off and hiding his clothes when he's trying to get dressed, and doing just about anything to get a reaction from his big brother. He has also taken to sleeping in random places around the house naked (like father like son?).

Yoriko Wallis, owner of Abacus by Wallis, is helping Cairns kids have fun with maths and feel confident with mental calculations by teaching them Japanese abacus. She is also mum to Taiga (2) and Kuga (11 months) [1] What inspired you to start this business? The look of amazement on my husband’s and brother-in-law’s faces when I took them to my aunts abacus class on a trip to Japan. My aunt's nine-year old grandson was showing us mental calculation for 3 digits X 2 digits multiplication questions and giving us correct answers in seven seconds. [2] Tell us about your classes? My coaching is 100% individual depending on each student’s goals but it is fun and I guarantee there will be no fear of maths after they learn abacus! [3] Where did you grow up? I was born in Osaka and spent my childhood there [4] Did you always love maths? Not always. I remember a time I really hated maths at school, but then in junior high

school I met a great teacher and my abacus skills became better. [5] Where are your favourite places to hang out in Cairns? The coffee club at Mt Sheridan Plaza. Quiet, mountain view, great coffee. I can relax there for 3 hours easy! [6] What's your favourite family movie? Wall E. My daughter just can't stop watching it, so I love it! [7] Tell us something most people wouldn't know about you? I played softball for 17 years in Japan and Australia and played for the Queensland team. My biggest achievement is a bronze medal in the National competition in Japan in 2002. For more information about Yoriko’s abacus classes call her on 4036 0650 or 0437 600 229.

I didn’t sleep for 36 hours after that.” Jackson spent seven days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for jaundice where he was fed via a combination of breastfeeding and a tube in his nose. Common in babies with Down syndrome, Jackson was also born with heart problems and at three months had to undergo heart surgery but it dramatically improved his health and made feeding much easier. “I would always feed Maggie

fairly prevalent at this age, but it is also a time when kids become more independent and assertive so they don’t appreciate being told what to do by their peers. This often means that bossy kids get rejected or left out. Many kids are unaware that they are bossy because their friends are more likely to say “I don’t want to play with you anymore” rather than explaining the real reason. Nigel Latta, author of Politically Incorrect Parenting and new book The Modern Family Survival Guide, says bossy behaviour can often affect friendships

• Teach them how to use decision-breakers when playing with friends to determine who chooses the game and who goes first, such as tossing a coin, playing rock paper scissors, using the ‘eenie meenie miney mo’ rhyme or guessing a number between one and 10. • Teach them the ‘cake sharing rule’ or ‘grandma’s rule’ as it is sometimes referred to. This entails everyone having a turn so for instance, one person chooses the game, another gets to go first etc.

SMART Ways

by Fiona Thorogood

Smart ways to battle higher costs With living costs on the increase, many Australians are feeling the pinch, but new research shows most of us are taking sensible steps to make our money stretch further.

Start by taking a look through your transaction account statements. If you’re paying a regular account fee of say, $5 a month, switching to a no-fee account could see you save $60 each year.

According to the survey by ING Direct, eight out of ten Australians say their living costs have climbed over the past 12 months with the main culprits being higher utility bills, grocery costs and fuel.

Next, check the rate you’re paying on your credit card. There’s a tremendous range of interest rates charged on different cards – from 9.25% to almost 23%. On a card balance of about $3,000 switching from one of the most expensive cards to one charging about 10% could see you save about $300 in annual interest costs.

On the plus side, it also seems as though the majority of households experiencing higher bills are using smart strategies to make ends meet. Six out of ten (60%) are shopping around for bargains, 53% are spending less and making do with what they have, and 49% are shopping more carefully at the supermarket. It‘s amazing how we tend to seek out discounts on items like groceries or clothing yet we often fail to take the same approach with our everyday bank account, credit card, insurance or home loan. Yet big savings can be made on these products.

A new survey has shown that women are much better at keeping on top of finances by budgeting and saving than men but they drop the ball when it comes to longterm wealth generation.

The same principle of shopping around also applies to car insurance and home and contents cover. With big variations in premiums between insurers, you could make substantial savings by comparing policies and costs at renewal time.

The ME Bank survey for MoneySmart Week also

showed that while a similar percentage of men and women are planning to invest in shares, bonds and property, there is a big difference in when they believe they will do it – 51% of men who are planning to invest are confident they will start of women (26% of women didn’t know when they would achieve this goal at all). Effie Zahos, Editor of Money magazine, says setting a goal with a realistic budget and a timeline is the first step.

Corn Juicy Fruit

by Rebecca McKenna

Do you often wonder whether you should be giving your kids fruit juice? You might be thinking that fruit is good for you so why is fruit juice ‘bad’? Juice is not necessarily ‘bad’, however, when fruit is juiced and given in large amounts, it can become a big sugar hit for your kids. Water is always going to be the best option, and you can probably already hear your kids saying, “BORING”!!! It is fine to give your kids fruit juice, but it is best to do so in moderation (125ml per day). If you find your child is replacing juice for water you may need some alternative ideas. • Choose a natural 100% fruit juice with no added extras • Give your kids juice as a weekend treat • Water it down. Pour a glass of water and add a small amount of juice • Freeze some juice in an ice cube tray. The kids will love to suck on these on a hot North Queensland day!

Yummy corn can be used in so many ways and is a fantastic source of dietary fibre, niacin, folate,

One of my favourite childhood treats was a home made fruit juice ice block in summer, it always seemed so much more exciting because I had helped Mum make them myself. The great thing about these is that it is an appropriate amount of juice, you know exactly what is in the ice block and the biggest worry you will have is making sure the kids don’t put their sticky little juice fingers all over the furniture!

vitamin C and carbohydrate for long lasting energy. It is generally available all year round and can be bought fresh, frozen or tinned. Corn can be steamed, boiled or cooked on the BBQ with a sprinkling of paprika. It can also be used to make delicious corn fritters or added to savoury muffins for an extra flavour hit.

Rebecca McKenna is an Accredited Practising Dietitian at Health Management Cairns (www.healthmanagement.com.au) who specialises in children, psychology of eating and weight loss. You can connect with Health Management and ask Rebecca questions on Facebook.

If you are looking for fruit juice alternatives that your kids will enjoy, try adding some orange or strawberry pieces to a jug of water, or a couple of teaspoons of Milo in some milk to keep their bones growing super strong.

How to teach good table manners READER QUESTION: We have a four year old and a six year old and we’ve been trying to teach them to eat at the table. However every mealtime is a disaster because they can’t sit still, they act silly and they make a mess. What can we do to make mealtimes more peaceful and teach the children some table manners? Mealtimes are a great time to come together as a family and, because of today’s busy lifestyles, for some families it is the only time that everyone talks to each other. Hungry children, or notso-hungry children, short attention spans and other distractions can turn mealtimes into a battle. Having routines and expectations that are well thought out and reasonable will help to eliminate these battles.

The following tips may be useful for your family at mealtimes: • Give your kids a clear message about the importance of eating together as a family by turning off mobile phones, the television and electronic games. Don’t answer the phone during dinner.

• Praise your children for their efforts and reward them for good mealtime behaviour. Rewards could include an extra bedtime story or a quick game before bedtime.

• Get the children involved in shopping and food preparation.

Megan Colahan is the principal psychologist at Colahan Psychology (37 O’Keefe Street, Cairns North). For more information call 4053 1122 or email megan@colahan-psychology.com.au

• Concentrate on making mealtimes fun and enjoyable so that your children are more likely to want to stay at the table.

• Be a good role model and show your children good table manners.

• Have realistic expectations of how long your children are able to sit at the table. For children aged four to six years of age, fifteen minutes is probably a reasonable time frame.

Disco

• Drinks including ‘adults’ drinks will be available for purchase & the canteen will be open

How to minimise sibling battles READER QUESTION: My fourteen-year old daughter often says that she ‘hates’ her younger brother and he tells me that he feels the same way about her. Our home is more like a war zone than a happy family unit. They argue and tease each other constantly. The neighbours have complained about the yelling and screaming that goes on between these two – especially when I am not home. They seem to not be able to stand each other. What can I do to help them get on better and reduce the level of conflict in my home? Siblings certainly don’t have to get along all the time. Many brothers and sisters fight and compete with each other while they are growing up but it may help to know that they eventually become very close when they are older.

In theory, allowing children to sort out their differences without parental intervention helps them develop problem solving and communication skills. However, sometimes these ‘differences’ can make life distressing and uncomfortable for everyone else in the house. Do you know what is the cause of this fighting? You haven’t mentioned who is the main instigator although it is often the biggest and strongest child who wins these kinds of battles which increases jealousy and rivalry. Younger siblings may be envious of the older sibling’s possessions, freedom and just the fact that they are older. Is one of your children more popular or ‘successful’ than the other? If so remind them that both have strengths and abilities and the

fact that they may have different personalities and interests, doesn’t mean that one is better or worse than the other. Whatever the cause of the conflict, let them know you’ve had enough of their constant bickering. You have the right to set some boundaries for verbal interaction between your two children so put some consistent and meaningful consequences in place for ‘yelling and screaming’. Avoid making false threats (or giving false promises). Consistent parenting, modelling mutual respect and not comparing one child to another is important. Wardrobe wake up

Narissa, a 28 year old mum of three, was nominated for a makeover this month by her sister who jokes that she dresses too old for her age.

DRESSING

your age

Narissa's Makeover Gerlinda: "Narissa has a great figure but for some reason has been hiding it behind baggy loose clothes that are mostly black! She is also only 28 years old so even though she's a mum, she's still young but her style is far from youthful. So we ditched the baggy dress for a more slim fitting dress that shows off her shape and introduced her to the world of colour. This makes her look much more youthful and stylish"

Mikayla: "Blonde hair requires high maintenance so is not always practical for mums because everybody else tends to come first when it comes to time and money. So we opted for a fresh new ombrĂŠ look for Narissa which is easier to maintain."
