TOP Tips to Remember • If you're looking after other people's children, let the child and parent know the rules upfront. • We all have a responsibility to correct a child who is behaving badly in a way that affects others (eg. being mean or bullying). • The key point is 'how' you do it and the way you approach it ie. firm but calm and respectful.

Since most household computers have Microsoft Windows on them, the first thing to do is to switch on the built-in parent controls (look under Control Panel then under User Accounts and Family Safety). This allows you to set limits on your child’s computer use, select games they can play and allow or block programs. You can also check what tools your internet service provider has on offer and set up
Mobiles, tablets and games consoles also come with parental controls but they are less effective so parents still need to supervise and peek over shoulders when these devices are being used. Social Networking While social media sites may be fascinating to children, most of them require users to be at least 13 years of age. All of them pose a potential risk, even those specifically designed for younger users such as Club Penguin. Ask.fm – Minimum age 13 years. Users ask each other questions but you don’t have to be a member to browse profiles or ask questions. Lots of the conversations are between school friends about daily happenings but there are also many overtly sexual questions asked. Kik – A messaging app for smart devices inc. ipod touches. Popular with kids although Kik states users should be 17+. Allows users to send messages like SMS. Facebook/Twitter/MySpace – Even if your child is over the required age limit
there are risks that come from interacting with people they don’t know. Make sure your child is well educated about privacy, what’s safe to put online etc. Tumblr – Users use this site to create their own blog. Be aware that many blogs have adult content or promote risky behaviours such as eating disorders and self-harm. Instagram – Popular photo and video sharing app. Make sure your children understand about online safety and legalities of sharing images. www.pakmag.com.au

SPF30 or SPF50? SPF50+ sunscreens first hit the shelves in January last year, and since the number on the bottle seems so much bigger than SPF30, many people are under the misconception that this new product is a suit of armour against the sun. However the reality is that SPF50+ sunscreen offers only marginally better UVB protection compared with SPF30. It is not a suit of armour and it doesn’t mean you can spend any longer in the sun. It still needs to be applied liberally every two hours, just like SPF30. All sunscreens that are broad-spectrum,

Children are particularly at risk because their smaller airways mean they breathe faster and take in relatively more of the smoke’s harmful chemicals than adults. Their immune systems are also less mature. Passive smoking has been shown to increase the risk of children suffering a

Bianca's Fav "Who doesn't love chocolate for breakfast at Easter time? I love this gluten free recipe – it is yum!"
INGREDIENTS • 6 slices gluten-free bread • 500ml chocolate almond milk • 4 eggs • 2 tablespoons rice bran oil • 2 punnets of blueberries • 100ml water • 1⁄2 lemon, juiced • 2 tablespoons caster sugar • 200ml marscapone • 100g chocolate for decoration
pakmag
TEAM recipe
Break eggs into bowl large enough to fit bread to soak in the mixture. Lightly beat eggs, add milk and stir together. This is not very sweet, so add some sugar or sugar substitute to the mixture if you are serving to sweet tooths. Add one tablespoon of rice bran oil to a frypan and put on medium-low heat. Soak bread pieces in egg mixture, one by one adding them to the pan. Brown on each side and keep warm. Add 2/3 of the blueberries, the lemon juice, water and caster sugar to a saucepan. Cook on low 10 minutes until the fruit has softened and the liquid reduced. Smear three slices of French toast generously with marscopone cheese. Alternate layers of French toast and blueberries. Half the toast stack on the diagonal and dust with grated chocolate. Recipe from yum. gluten free magazine www.yumglutenfree.com.au

Being assertive involves recognising and standing up for your own rights whilst also being respectful of the rights of others. Children who are assertive are more likely to have healthy self-esteem, better communication skills and be able to stand up to bullying and resist peer pressure. Just like adults though, some kids can find it hard to be assertive, but it is a skill that can be learnt so try these strategies: • Encourage your children to express their opinions and let them know that you value what they have to say even if you don’t agree. • Discuss common situations together and teach them how to react in an assertive manner.
• Explain the difference between being assertive and being aggressive. • Advise them to speak up for themselves clearly and firmly but not to get angry • Teach assertive body language skills such as maintaining eye contact, holding their head up and using the other persons name when speaking with them. • Model assertive behaviour for your children. If this is something you struggle with yourself seek advice or training.
High School Hook Ups
by Denise Bewert
I was contacted recently by a parent who’s son has just started high school. For the first few weeks it was going well but then he suddenly seemed reluctant to go to school and when questioned about it he admitted that another boy was threatening him for ‘trying to hook up with his girlfriend’. It just so happens that this girl is a family friend who he has known for years. In situations like these speak to the School Principal or Guidance Officer. Any kind of bullying or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated in the school environment and there are various ways they may decide to tackle a situation like this one. It’s also important for young people who are starting to ‘hook up’ to be taught
what constitutes healthy and unhealthy behaviour in relationships. This particular boy is clearly not getting off to a good start if he thinks he can control who does or does not speak to his ‘girlfriend’. Sometimes it may be appropriate for a whole school year to receive some education around this topic. www.pakmag.com.au

Paul Dymond, president of the Dodgers team and coach of the Rookies, all on the south side, says baseball is a fantastic sport for kids because it helps them develop eye-hand coordination, team spirit and good sportsmanship. He also adds that as a noncontact sport kids are less likely to get hurt than they would playing a physical contact sport. “Kids learn so many skills in baseball. Why it’s worth investing in premium pet foods As the saying goes, ‘we are what we eat’ and the same goes for animals too. Combined with regular exercise and veterinary checkups, good nutrition promotes healthy teeth, skin and coat, strong well developed bones, bright clear eyes, good muscle tone, firmer smaller stools, increased energy as well as improved quality of life and longevity.

Dropping the Baby!
I took the family along to see the Harlem Globetrotters when they came to Cairns late last year. Little did I know that of all the amazing tricks and stunts performed that night it would be me that provided the most dramatic event of the evening.
So there I was happily enjoying the show with my lovely wife Coco and 3 kids. It was about half way through the game when the Globetrotter “Moose” (the cool guy with the afro) suddenly threw one of his wristbands into the crowd.
“CLUNK!” I had dropped the baby. Yes, for everyone at the game who witnessed the event on the night, it was me! I was the one who dropped the baby! I don’t even know how it happened, I thought I had a tight hold on him,
