TOP Tips to Remember • If you're looking after other people's children, let the child and parent know the rules upfront. • We all have a responsibility to correct a child who is behaving badly in a way that affects others (eg. being mean or bullying). • The key point is 'how' you do it and the way you approach it ie. firm but calm and respectful.

SelfReflection I have heard it said that it is impossible to teach anything to anyone under the age of thirty. As an educator I know this to be an untrue statement. However, in the context in which it is said I believe there is a high degree of truth in the statement.

TECH Talk NEW App
Parental Controls
With children becoming increasingly ‘tech-savvy’ parents need to get serious about putting parental controls on the technology devices in their household, even before they think they need to. While none of the tools available are 100% effective at blocking inappropriate content, they at least provide a basic level of protection. Since most household computers have Microsoft Windows on them, the first thing to do is to switch on the built-in parent controls (look under Control Panel then under User Accounts and Family Safety). This allows you to set limits on your child’s computer use, select games they can play and allow or block programs. You can also check what tools your internet service provider has on offer and set up
Google SafeSearch filters to prevent adult content appearing in your children’s search results. Mobiles, tablets and games consoles also come with parental controls but they are less effective so parents still need to supervise and peek over shoulders when these devices are being used. New internet safety tools are constantly being launched. To find the right one for your family check the reviews by other users on technology review sites. For more information about parental controls go to cybersmart.gov.au
bCyberwise Life Education Australia and McAfee have recently launched a cyber education game that makes learning about online safety fun and easy for kids, parents and teachers. bCyberwise Monster Family game is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play for use on Apple and Android devices. The games content aligns with the Australian Curriculum and is aimed at kids aged between 8-13 years.

Social Networking While social media sites may be fascinating to children, most of them require users to be at least 13 years of age. All of them pose a potential risk, even those specifically designed for younger users such as Club Penguin. Ask.fm – Minimum age 13 years. Users ask each other questions but you don’t have to be a member to browse profiles or ask questions. Lots of the conversations are between school friends about daily happenings but there are also many overtly sexual questions asked. Kik – A messaging app for smart devices inc. ipod touches. Popular with kids although Kik states users should be 17+. Allows users to send messages like SMS. Facebook/Twitter/MySpace – Even if your child is over the required age limit
there are risks that come from interacting with people they don’t know. Make sure your child is well educated about privacy, what’s safe to put online etc. Tumblr – Users use this site to create their own blog. Be aware that many blogs have adult content or promote risky behaviours such as eating disorders and self-harm. Instagram – Popular photo and video sharing app. Make sure your children understand about online safety and legalities of sharing images. www.pakmag.com.au

SPF30 or SPF50? SPF50+ sunscreens first hit the shelves in January last year, and since the number on the bottle seems so much bigger than SPF30, many people are under the misconception that this new product is a suit of armour against the sun. However the reality is that SPF50+ sunscreen offers only marginally better UVB protection compared with SPF30. It is not a suit of armour and it doesn’t mean you can spend any longer in the sun. It still needs to be applied liberally every two hours, just like SPF30. All sunscreens that are broad-spectrum,
Most parents would be pretty horrified at the thought of their child with a cigarette in their mouth, but since second-hand smoke can hang around for about five hours, they can still be affected by smoke even after adults have finished their cigarette.
Children are particularly at risk because their smaller airways mean they breathe faster and take in relatively more of the smoke’s harmful chemicals than adults. Their immune systems are also less mature. Passive smoking has been shown to increase the risk of children suffering a

Bianca's Fav “Who doesn’t love chocolate for breakfast at Easter time? I love this gluten free recipe – it is yum!”
INGREDIENTS • 6 slices gluten-free bread • 500ml chocolate almond milk • 4 eggs • 2 tablespoons rice bran oil • 2 punnets of blueberries • 100ml water • 1⁄2 lemon, juiced • 2 tablespoons caster sugar • 200ml marscapone • 100g chocolate for decoration

TEAM recipe
Break eggs into bowl large enough to fit bread to soak in the mixture. Lightly beat eggs, add milk and stir together. This is not very sweet, so add some sugar or sugar substitute to the mixture if you are serving to sweet tooths. Add one tablespoon of rice bran oil to a frypan and put on medium-low heat. Soak bread pieces in egg mixture, one by one adding them to the pan. Brown on each side and keep warm. Add 2/3 of the blueberries, the lemon juice, water and caster sugar to a saucepan. Cook on low 10 minutes until the fruit has softened and the liquid reduced. Smear three slices of French toast generously with marscopone cheese. Alternate layers of French toast and blueberries. Half the toast stack on the diagonal and dust with grated chocolate. Recipe from yum. gluten free magazine www.yumglutenfree.com.au
Stalls are $100 if booked prior to 15 May and $150 for bookings after this date. 100% of the money from your booking will go to the fund. We are also looking for local performers, businesses who want to donate a prize, and volunteers to help on the day.

FAN Update
Boatie Alert!
by Battery World
Avoid Easter Egg on your face Mackay has one of the highest registrations of trailer boats in Queensland so if you’re one of those planning a day on the water over Easter, make sure you check your battery. Mackay Battery World’s Gabe Giannangelo says “Fluid evaporation affects battery life especially if your car or boat has been left in the sun in high heat over summer and you are taking it out for a spin for the first time.”
Vinyl Planking Choices to suit your decor The market for fans has come along way; it’s no longer a straight choice between white or stainless steel. As an example Lighting Network stock the very popular and up market Mercator Uragano products which come in six colours, as well as a wide range of metal and wooden blade fans.
Book See
These stylish Booksee book shelves are the latest product from children’s furniture brand Ubabub (ubabub.com) which were designed to help keep children’s rooms stylish and tidy.
Vinyl floor planks are very popular and if you’ve been watching The Block you’ll know they can be versatile – they’ve been used as wall panelling and features. According to Cherie at The Carpet House, warm timber with charcoals is “hot, hot hot”. Vinyl planks are particularly good for families because they look amazing and are durable but without the price tag. To find out more head down to The Carpet House or find them on facebook for inspiration.

APR 2014 Design Tips
Cosy for Winter diyhome
By Sofie Buchholz
April marks the middle of Autumn and a subtle change in season, making it a great time to add a few small cosy changes in our homes. North Queensland homes are built to cope with the intense heat of summer but this can make them feel cold in winter. However, warmth can be added by changing the colour of your decor and introducing heavier textures. Colours – Olive, brown and yellow ochre tones are popping up in homewares this season. Use these darker shades in cushions, throws and smaller changeable decorative items such as vases to ‘cosy’ up your home. Rugs – Floor rugs are also a nice addition to create a barrier between your feet and the cold winter tiles. They also soften the environment helping add to that cosy feeling for winter. Making a DIY Runner Rugs can dominate a room and dictate the rest of your décor, but if you create your own you can colour it to suit a room and update it more often. This runner has been painted to tie in with the cushion using house paint. The design was created by following the natural weave of the rug and using masking tape to create sections of different width for the two colours used. House paint does add an additional stiffness to the rug, which can be a good thing if it’s being used in a high traffic area, but if you prefer a softer finish, look for a softer fabric paint.
