TOP Tips to Remember • If you're looking after other people's children, let the child and parent know the rules upfront. • We all have a responsibility to correct a child who is behaving badly in a way that affects others (eg. being mean or bullying). • The key point is 'how' you do it and the way you approach it ie. firm but calm and respectful.

Parental Controls

With children becoming increasingly ‘tech-savvy’ parents need to get serious about putting parental controls on the technology devices in their household, even before they think they need to. While none of the tools available are 100% effective at blocking inappropriate content, they at least provide a basic level of protection. Since most household computers have Microsoft Windows on them, the first thing to do is to switch on the built-in parent controls (look under Control Panel then under User Accounts and Family Safety). This allows you to set limits on your child’s computer use, select games they can play and allow or block programs. You can also check what tools your internet service provider has on offer and set up

Google SafeSearch filters to prevent adult content appearing in your children’s search results. Mobiles, tablets and games consoles also come with parental controls but they are less effective so parents still need to supervise and peek over shoulders when these devices are being used. New internet safety tools are constantly being launched. To find the right one for your family check the reviews by other users on technology review sites. For more information about parental controls go to cybersmart.gov.au

bCyberwise Life Education Australia and McAfee have recently launched a cyber education game that makes learning about online safety fun and easy for kids, parents and teachers. bCyberwise Monster Family game is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play for use on Apple and Android devices. The games content aligns with the Australian Curriculum and is aimed at kids aged between 8-13 years.

Social Networking While social media sites may be fascinating to children, most of them require users to be at least 13 years of age. All of them pose a potential risk, even those specifically designed for younger users such as Club Penguin. Ask.fm – Minimum age 13 years. Users ask each other questions but you don’t have to be a member to browse profiles or ask questions. Lots of the conversations are between school friends about daily happenings but there are also many overtly sexual questions asked. Kik – A messaging app for smart devices inc. ipod touches. Popular with kids although Kik states users should be 17+. Allows users to send messages like SMS. Facebook/Twitter/MySpace – Even if your child is over the required age limit

there are risks that come from interacting with people they don’t know. Make sure your child is well educated about privacy, what’s safe to put online etc. Tumblr – Users use this site to create their own blog. Be aware that many blogs have adult content or promote risky behaviours such as eating disorders and self-harm. Instagram – Popular photo and video sharing app. Make sure your children understand about online safety and legalities of sharing images. www.pakmag.com.au

SPF30 or SPF50? SPF50+ sunscreens first hit the shelves in January last year, and since the number on the bottle seems so much bigger than SPF30, many people are under the misconception that this new product is a suit of armour against the sun. However the reality is that SPF50+ sunscreen offers only marginally better UVB protection compared with SPF30. It is not a suit of armour and it doesn’t mean you can spend any longer in the sun. It still needs to be applied liberally every two hours, just like SPF30. All sunscreens that are broad-spectrum,

Most parents would be pretty horrified at the thought of their child with a cigarette in their mouth, but since second-hand smoke can hang around for about five hours, they can still be affected by smoke even after adults have finished their cigarette.

Children are particularly at risk because their smaller airways mean they breathe faster and take in relatively more of the smoke’s harmful chemicals than adults. Their immune systems are also less mature. Passive smoking has been shown to increase the risk of children suffering a

The best way to deal with them is to apply pressure on the sides of the nostrils (the soft part) for about five minutes while your child sits still (with their head slightly tilted forward). TEAM recipe

Break eggs into bowl large enough to fit bread to soak in the mixture. Lightly beat eggs, add milk and stir together. This is not very sweet, so add some sugar or sugar substitute to the mixture if you are serving to sweet tooths. Add one tablespoon of rice bran oil to a frypan and put on medium-low heat. Soak bread pieces in egg mixture, one by one adding them to the pan. Brown on each side and keep warm. Add 2/3 of the blueberries, the lemon juice, water and caster sugar to a saucepan. Cook on low 10 minutes until the fruit has softened and the liquid reduced. Smear three slices of French toast generously with marscopone cheese. Alternate layers of French toast and blueberries. Half the toast stack on the diagonal and dust with grated chocolate. Recipe from yum. gluten free magazine www.yumglutenfree.com.au

Crazy Cooking Story thanks to Amanda Cranston Kids getting a bit bored? Why not get them busy in the kitchen with these crazy, fun cooking ideas. [1] Layered jellies – Use clear plastic cups so you can see your handiwork and make layers of jelly in different colours. Each layer needs to set before adding the next but you can make a rainbow or traffic light layered jelly of red, yellow and green. [2] Colourful fruit skewers – All you need for these are skewers and a range of fruits in different colours and then colour-coordinate the fruit all the way up the skewer. [3] Make your own ice-cream flavouRS – Buy a large tub of vanilla ice cream and divide it into a few different mixing bowls. In each bowl make your own individual flavour of ice cream by adding treats like smarties, crushed honeycomb, choc chips, etc. Then put each flavour in a plastic container with a lid and refreeze until ready to eat. [4] Blue jelly aquariums – Fill a large glass punchbowl, fishbowl or mixing bowl with a mixture of blue food colouring, gelatin, flat soda water and soft fish lollies to make an edible ‘fish tank’. (Recipe on our website) [7] Toffee apples – These are sticky and gooey but so much fun. You will need some unused ice-cream sticks and apples, caster sugar, liquid glucose, white vinegar and red food colouring (recipe on our website). You can also decorate plain apples by covering them in peanut butter and sticking nuts, cornflakes or smarties on them. [8] Fortune cookies – Create your own fortune cookies and fill them with jokes, inspirational quotes or fun and silly dares. These can be a little time consuming to make as you can only make a couple at a time but it is rewarding and exciting to make your own. [9] Rainbow layered pancakes – Kids will love making these bright coloured pancakes all stacked on top of each other. All you need is a basic pancake recipe and then separate the mixture between a few different bowls. Add a decent amount of food colouring to each bowl (a different colour to each bowl) and then cook the pancakes and stack the different colours on top of each other. [9] Jelly filled oranges (sliced) – These look awesome and they are very easy to make. Cut a few oranges in half and scoop out the flesh, then make up some jelly mixtures in different colours and pour into the orange skins. When they are all set, slice the oranges so you have slices of coloured jellies.

Once we got to the resort and checked in, we found our way to our three-bedroom family apartment, which was located right by the huge swimming pool, much to the delight of the girls. Spoilt with views of both the magical Blue on Blue marina and sparkling swimming pool, our stunning apartment was clean, sleek, and

had so many delicious items to choose from that ordering became quite a challenge - everything seemed too good not to try. The girls chose chicken strips and chips (of course) from their very own kids menu along with a drink of their choice and dessert, which was all included in the meal price.

I then chose a delicious rack of lamb on a bed of garlic désiree mash with roasted baby beets, finished with a crème de cassis jus, which was amazing. Hubby ordered Beef Wellington, which came with desirée mash and mushroom duxelle capped with puff pastry and finished with a port wine jus. I’ve been getting right up close to her ear and whispering “mum mum mum mum” every day, and even getting her to watch the way I move my mouth in the hope that she would say it. But every time I said “Mum” to her, she has just been looking at me for a bit and then answering

In the end, I don’t mind playing second fiddle to Daddy because I know she is going to be a Daddy’s girl. I’m okay with that; I will claim the next child. But…the one thing I do have an issue with is the fact that she said “DOG” before “MUM”!! At least I know where I stand in the family pecking order.
