praise, such as “well done”, “you’re so smart” and “great win” may actually be doing more damage than good to a child’s self-confidence, resilience and independence
better than last week and I noticed that you worked on your spelling every day”, is more likely to make them pay attention and try harder.
Researchers have discovered three important results of the increased praise movement:
[2] Give descriptive praise
[1] When children were praised for being intelligent or smart they were more likely to blame poor performance on a lack of ability and gave up sooner. However, children who were praised for their effort performed roughly 25% better on a set of problems as they persisted longer and enjoyed the challenge more. (1) Dweck and Mueller [2] Evaluative praise makes the child dependent on the approval of others rather than increasing their independence. “You are so generous” makes the child dependent on the judgement of the person who praised. (2) Joan LeFebvre Uni. Of Wisconsin [3] “Over-focus on self-esteem over the last 30 years has produced more young people who are low in empathy and high in narcissism” (3) Professor McGarth, RMIT
Awesome Try
So where does this now leave us as parents? This research may leave some parents feeling lost after thinking they were doing the right thing for their children. However, this research has now given us some useful insights into how to do even better as parents.
Great Effort Well Done!
Good Job
The process of praising children effectively has a lot more nuances to it than you may realise, writes Jutta Dempsey Over the last few decades there has been a movement in parenting towards giving our children increased praise in order to protect and build their self-esteem. However, how we praise our children has recently been put under scrutiny
10
www.pakmag.com.au
with different researchers and experts finding that indiscriminate praising may make our children more dependent, egocentric and selfabsorbed as well as making them more prone to bullying behaviour.
There is no doubt that praise from parents, the most important people in their lives, is crucial to all aspects of a child’s development, from academic and sporting achievements to social and emotional functioning. However, some
Instead of evaluating what they’ve done, tell them what you’ve observed them do so they can recognise the truth and credit themselves. For example, “when you saw Sue forgot her hat and you played with her under the shelter so she wasn’t alone I could see she was much happier.” This comment helps your child see how their actions have had a positive effect. The key question to ask yourself here is: does my praise make my children more dependent upon me and my approval or do I help them see a clear picture of their strengths, abilities and accomplishments?
[3] Be Sincere Children are experts at reading body language and tone of voice. They know whether you’re being sincere or not so when you’re genuinely pleased with their behaviour allow your child to see it. Give them a hug or a smile.
[4] Role Model
Here are some tips to start using in the way you praise your children:
Whatever skills, attitudes and behaviours you want to see in your children, must be role modelled at home. Giving yourself a break when something does not go perfectly and articulating that “its okay that I make mistakes because I learn so much from them” heightens children’s risk-taking and persistence.
[1] Provide specific feedback
[5] Ask Questions
Children will see general comments like “you’re so smart” as something they can’t change so they are less likely to make an effort to get better. Making specific comments about something they’ve done well is more effective. For example, saying something like “you did
Show an interest in what your children are working on and foster discussions and an evaluation of what they have done. For example, “you’ve worked on that project all afternoon – can you tell me about it?”
great advice Whilst parents may need to develop and adapt the way they praise their children as a result of this recent research, there will still never be any evidence to support being negative and critical. Comments such as “you’re so stupid” go right to the core of who a child is and lasts for a lifetime. It has been said that it takes six positive statements to undo one negative one but labels like “stupid” just stick forever. www.pakmag.com.au

How many times have you promised yourself that next year will be different and you’ll put money aside to pay for Christmas? You’re not alone. Many of us start out good intentions but still end up

struggling to meet the costs of Christmas. One way to avoid this is to get a Queensland Country Christmas Saver Account. Even if you only pay in $25 a week you’ll have a cash injection of $1300 when Christmas comes around next year. If you’ve already got Christmas covered, you could still use the money to treat yourself to a few nights away with your friends and family over the holiday period or spend up big in the Boxing Day Sales. Christmas Savings by Fiona Thorogood
You may think that your money is nobody else’s business but the truth is, children and especially teenagers, form their own attitudes and habits towards money from their parents. So, if you want your children to be money smart, start learning about money and being a good role model. Many financial institutions are now providing school and community-based programs aimed at helping kids develop key money skills. Research group Canstar recently named the Commonwealth Bank as the winner of its Youth Banking and Education Award for the second year running for its commitment to youth banking and education. One of the best places to start teaching your children about money is to show them the value of regular saving. Opening a savings account for your child provides

Clean Hands

The campaign to raise awareness of the growing resistance to antibiotics is heating up with regional experts saying greater awareness of basic hand hygiene amongst healthcare workers and the public could have a dramatic impact on preventable infections and reduce overuse of current antibiotics.

The World Health Organisation has warned that many infectious diseases risk becoming uncontrollable. They have also reiterated the importance of hand hygiene in reducing the transmission of infections.
• Have a light breakfast – this will lessen nausea and raise your blood glucose level to lessen fatigue. • Avoid caffeine – it causes irritation to the stomach and worsens dehydration. Tea is preferable to coffee but green tea is best. • Avoid taking paracetamol unless you have a headache that really warrants it because it has to be metabolised by your already over-worked liver. know is that sometimes too much breast milk isn’t so good for your baby. If you have a good milk supply and feed too frequently then it’s possible that your baby can become overloaded with lactose and this can play havoc with their digestive system. The signs to watch for are: green frothy poo’s, lots of crying, diarrhoea and nappy rash with good weight gain. Unfortunately these are also the signs

wakes frequently, has explosive poo’s and then as a result of the poo, inevitably ends up with nappy rash. Eventually you make an appointment to see your GP or child health nurse but since they are unaware of whats been happening at home with the cycle of crying and feeding, when they undress your baby and see the signs of lactose intolerance this is likely to be their diagnosis. The solutions for lactose intolerance include cutting out a range of foods from mums diet and if the signs still persist, your baby is moved onto a soy type formula.

If this sounds like you and your baby then be aware that overfeeding is quite likely the main problem. To break the cycle, stick to a feed routine rather than feeding on demand. A four hourly feeding routine is recommended. Let your baby’s digestive system calm and repair and make sure you have other strategies handy to deal with a crying baby instead of feeding. by qualified teachers to be interactive and to maintain a child’s attention while taking them on an enjoyable adventure through the elements of art. The sessions are tailored to different age groups:
Young scribblers (2-5 year olds) Accompanied by a parent, younger children get to explore the basic elements of art each week through an art-loving character called ‘Flick’ and participate in several different activities.
Birthday parties Lil Scribblers also host birthday parties that can be held in the studio or at your home. Party Time Packages are tailored to suit your child’s preferred theme and include themed invitations, a 1½ hour party and party bags. For more information or to make a booking, call Lil Scribblers on 4033 0685 or 0400 646 327 or email lilscribblers@gmail.com
Older scribblers (6-12 year olds) Older children learn about the elements of art and how to apply them to an artwork as well as exploring different tools and materials. Children do not need to be artistically gifted; it’s all about enjoyment and discovering what they’re capable of. www.pakmag.com.au

For those families who already have pets, Christmas brings along a number of other risks so here are some tips for avoiding a trip to the vets during the festive season:
[1] Harmful foods Food plays such an integral part of Christmas that you may be tempted to share the mountains of goodies with your dog and cat. Don’t! Keep them secure in the event of a cyclone or thunderstorm. Remember fleas will increase during hot humid weather so ensure you keep up to date with your flea preventative treatment.
