According to Psychologist Megan Colahan young children don’t associate their behaviour with gender identity but are simply drawn to activities that they enjoy. “It is usual for children to dress up in clothes of the other sex as part of their play,” Megan says. “A lot of girls will prefer what are traditionally viewed as ‘boy activities’ simply because they see them as more fun. This is not unhealthy or abnormal behaviour.” Megan also points out that these days the difference between ‘girl’ and ‘boy’ activities is becoming less defined as children have more freedom to explore different gender roles.
Is there such a thing as Tom Girls? While society is often forgiving of young girls displaying so-called masculine behavior, the same is not always so for young boys choosing to parade around in their mother’s shoes and dresses. But in reality aren’t the two behaviours essentially the same? “In the preschool years boys are just as likely as girls to experiment with

gender roles,” Megan says. “This is normal and healthy behaviour.” Megan also says it’s important
When does it become a problem? The good news is, in most cases tomboy behavior is just an experimental phase in a child’s life that resolves itself in time. According to Megan, most children have a very flexible view of gender until about the age of six when they enter the more structured environment of school and are under more influence from their peers. In some circumstances however, a child’s behaviour could be a symptom of a deeper issue. “There are some children who feel very unhappy about their gender and they may consistently express this throughout their childhood,” Megan says. Even in this instance, Megan recommends parents have an open mind. “Issues with gender identity should only be a cause of concern if it is causing the child to feel distressed,” she says. “If the child is feeling stressed about their identity then it may be useful to seek professional help.” Overall childhood is an intensive and experimental time in life and as long as they’re happy and healthy, there’s no reason to make them feel self conscious about their behaviour. After all, what is a tomboy except a girl who exhibits strong, positive (and yes, sometimes masculine associated) traits. If independence, athleticism and an adventurous spirit makes a girl ‘un-feminine’ and sensitivity and creativity deems a boy ‘un-masculine’, maybe it’s time we change our own perceptions and allow our children to be who they really want to be?

The Year 12 divorce phenomenon, also known as the HSC itch, is very real, according to sexologist Elaine George, but nurturing your relationship is the best safeguard.
S
ome relationship experts suggest that divorce rates from women in their 40s and 50s are increasing more than any other demographic group. While some women are only just starting their families in their early 40s, others have been married for a number of years, and have become increasingly disillusioned with their marriage. Rather than disrupt schooling, they are waiting until their children finish school before flying the coop. This phenomenon may also be due to many women feeling trapped when their children are younger – financially and domestically – yet when the children finish school they find they are free to move on thanks to less demands at home and a full return to their former career.
The statistics on all relationships are relatively sobering. According to Harville Hendrix in the US, only 25% of all couples successfully transcend and negotiate what he has defined as the ‘power struggle’ into a close, deep, emotionally and physically intimate marriage. So what about the remaining 75% of couples? According to Hendrix, 25% fight like cat and dogs, 25% live parallel lives and the other 25% separate or divorce. The 25% of couples who tend to live parallel lives – often referred to as ‘passing ships in the night’, are at greatest danger of growing apart as the years roll by when children are at school. Conflict can build insidiously and is often under the radar.

These families appear organised, efficient and harmonious from the outside despite a growing gulf between the couple. Some of these couples function very effectively on all levels – including sex. In fact sex can be used as a substitute for
emotional intimacy and this is why divorce can seem to appear out of nowhere and be a shock to one of the partners if he/she has believed that everything is honky-dory. Unfortunately for some couples resentment can build gradually over the years until one partner either erupts like a volcano and/or finds another mate, and often the other partner is left totally stunned, unaware of the other’s discontent that precipitated the split. I have seen various couples become exasperated because they crave closeness with their partner, yet are unwilling to plan time accordingly. I have also seen couples where one person inadvertently sabotages any opportunity for them to have time together, particularly on weekends. As boring as it sounds we do need to plan and schedule intimate time together as parents. Emotional intimacy is paramount but it requires constant nurturing and time. It is not a quick fix. Time needs to be scheduled and set aside, and ideally all couples need time away from the chaos of children and other activities at least once a year. If couples lose their time to be emotionally intimate, the fabric of their connection wears thin and eventually tears. Most of us realise that we need to water and nurture plants but we also need to this with our partners. Complacency is lethal. Divorce can be extremely intimidating and has a devastating effect on children even when they’ve finished school. The expression ‘never put all your eggs in one basket’ is very pertinent to investing. While the current low interest rates are good news for those with a mortgage, it is less so if you have cash deposits sitting in a bank account, so now is a good time to review whether you could achieve potentially higher returns elsewhere. Recent reports have indicated that school costs are rising. By Dr Julia Driscoll The campaign to include advice about tooth decay on soft drinks is gaining pace after a large study from the University of Adelaide connected sugary drink consumption and poor dental health. The study surveyed almost 17,000 children and found that children who consumed three or more sweet drinks per day had 46% more decayed, missing and filled baby teeth. More than half of children aged 5-16 years were found to have consumed at least one sugared drink per day, and 13% consumed three or more. Boys were found to consume more sweet drinks than girls. The study found children from the lowest
income families consumed almost 60% more sugared drinks, an issue that only compounds the problem according to Professor Mike Morgan, program leader of the Oral Health CRC at University of Melbourne. “Unfortunately those with high risk of dental disease – including those who consume cheap decay causing diets – tend also to be those less able to access appropriate oral health care.”

• 1 sheet frozen ready-rolled shortcrust pastry • 200g sliced leg ham, chopped • 2 tbs finely chopped chives • 1/2 cup cream • 1/4 cup grated cheese • 6 eggs • 1/4 cup grated parmesan

• 3 cups (450g) plain flour • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg • 225g salted butter • 1 cup (220g) caster sugar • 2 eggs • 3/4 cup (110g) currants • Zest of 1 lemon

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a fluted flan pan. Roll pastry out on a flat surface

Scouting can be a fun way for your child to make friends, learn new skills and experience the great outdoors, writes Dan Miller.
S
couting has a long history in Australia. In fact, in 2012 the Far North celebrated the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the area. While Scouting may be old, its aim to develop young people into productive community members remains relevant. The Scout movement was founded in England in 1907, by army officer Sir Robert Baden-Powell, as a way to educate young people and promote their independence. From these humble beginnings the Scouts has grown into one of the world’s largest youth organisations, operating in over 200 countries. In Australia Scouting is divided into five sections to accommodate the needs of various age groups: [1] Joey Scouts is for children aged between seven and eight. In Joeys there is a focus on discovering the world in a way that’s exciting for young children. [2] Cub Scouts is the next step up, catering to children aged seven to 11. Cub Scouts are divided into ‘packs’ of five to six Cubs and a focus is placed on positive development and teamwork. [3] Scouts is for children aged 10½ to 15. Scouts work to pursue their interests and develop new skills in order to earn badges. Again Scouts are divided into smaller ‘patrols’ of about six. [4] Venturer Scouts is for older teenagers (those aged 14½ to 18 years). Venturers are given more independence and encouraged to plan their own challenging adventures.

[5] Rover Scouts is for young adults (aged 18-26).
Members of younger sections usually don their scarfs and woggles for meetings at the local Scout den once a week. In addition to these weekly meetings, camps and excursions are also held. Generally once a term Joeys have a sleep-over in the Scout den. Cubs go on overnight camping trips once a term and also take many day trips away. Scouts go on many camping trips and hikes throughout the year, while older sections camp and hike as often as the individual crews desire. Alexandra Allanson of the Far North Region Scouts says Scouting has a wide appeal as it caters to many interests. “The programs are tailored and designed by leaders to cater for all kids in the group and all youth members are encouraged to incorporate their own personal interests during their time in Scouts, as well as engage in new and different activities,” she says. “The fundamental aim of Scouting is to promote and encourage all levels of physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development.” There are 14 Scout groups operating in the Far North area (which includes Cape York, Tully and the Atherton Tablelands), six of which operate directly out of Cairns. A new group is also being established in Hope Vale. Parents are usually required to pay a yearly membership fee.
