Gardner’s multiple intelligences have been used to identify the many potential areas of child giftedness. These types of intelligences, along with examples of activities which reflect them, include: • Spatial – doing puzzles, drawing and painting. • Verbal/language – writing, reading and speaking. • Logic and mathematics – numbers and problem solving. • Body – dancing and sport. • Musical – singing, composing and playing an instrument. • Naturalistic – understanding the natural world. • Interpersonal – relating to others, communication and leadership. • Intrapersonal – reflecting and being self-sufficient. A child who is performing, or can perform, in one of these areas significantly better than might be expected given his or her age might be gifted. This being said, some accelerated learning programs for gifted children require a standardised assessment of the child’s performance to be carried out by a professional, such as a psychologist, before enrolment. Ms Hewton believes such acceleration and extension programs can be extremely beneficial for gifted children, especially given gifted

She says that while education policy requires that state schools identify gifted students and provide them with some kind of program, you may still need to shop around to get the best for your child. “The policy requirement is not backed by adequate funding, but hopefully there are schools with action plans that include differentiation, ability grouping and acceleration in its many forms (rather than just gradeskipping).” While schools can be very valuable in nurturing gifted kids it is still important for parents to stay informed on the topic. “Knowledgeable parents may be better able to negotiate with schools for gifted education provisions, or make more satisfactory alternative arrangements for their children’s education.” “If parents know what giftedness is and what gifted children need, they will be able to better support the gifted child. In some cases the high ability child can be recognised within the family and celebrated,” Ms Hewton says.

While she believes that giftedness is more than just grasping schoolwork quickly and easily, she does concede that intelligence lies at the heart of gifted performance.
“It does not refer only to the profoundly gifted, but to anyone who has a high ability, anyone who is capable of performing at the level of excellence in any worthwhile area of human endeavour.”
“Giftedness relates to the brain, to intellect, or general intelligence. You cannot perform at levels of excellence, i.e., gifted performances demonstrating mastery, in any area – not arts, not sports – without intellect. It is not usually

“Gifted children flourish in school environments where teachers are positive and provide options for them to proceed as fast as they want, and in greater depth and complexity throughout the curriculum,” she says. “They appreciate teachers who are actively looking for the gifted and know how to recognise and extend these high ability children.”

In the 1980s, psychologist Howard Gardner put forward a theory in which he identified multiple areas of intelligence, many of which don’t necessarily relate to traditional academics.

Solutions collaborative
C
legal
matters By Catherine Ross Accredited Family Law Specialist
Collaborative Law is a new process that enables everyone to win during family separation
18
www.pakmag.com.au
ollaborative Law is a fresh alternative for separated couples needing to divide their property and decide where their children will live. It provides a vehicle for couples to negotiate in good faith, free from the threat of litigation. It also gives them the opportunity to take control of their own matters and work together towards a solution. Rather than each party ‘lawyering up’ and working against each other to achieve the best result for themselves, the idea is that the parties and their lawyers work collaboratively as a team to find creative solutions to meeting both parties’ needs. Of course compromises will need to be made, and a party may not always walk away with everything they want, but a ’win-lose’ scenario is avoided. The collaborative process involves a series of four-way meetings between parties and their lawyers, rather than the traditional practice of each party meeting privately with their own lawyer, who then communicates with the other party’s lawyer and the Court. In the four-way meetings, the parties and their lawyers decide in open discussions the issues that need to be dealt with, work out an action plan, and move together toward a final, enforceable agreement. Other professionals may be involved in the meetings to assist the parties reach an outcome, such as accountants, financial advisors, valuers and counsellors. All participating lawyers and other professionals must have been trained in the collaborative process.
What are the advantages of this process? • You and your former partner control the process and the outcome • Support is provided by trained professionals from a variety of disciplines • Confidential and private • Future-focused, rather than dwelling on the past • Interest-based, non-adversarial negotiation • Ability to create win/win solutions • Painful and expensive court proceedings can be avoided Collaborative Law may not be for everyone but it is definitely not a soft option. It requires commitment to the process and to achieving an outcome suitable to both parties. Collaborative Law may be an excellent option for you and your former partner if you are both willing to: • prioritise the needs of your children, • communicate openly, honestly and respectfully, and to listen to each other, • acknowledge that each of you have needs that have to be addressed, and • be transparent in information sharing – putting all your cards on the table. For more information contact MacDonnells Law on 4030 0600 to arrange an appointment with one of our Queensland-wide Family Law specialists who are accredited in the practice of Collaborative Law.

By Dr Julia Driscoll Circumcision is when the piece of loose skin that covers the tip of the penis is surgically removed, and it can be quite a perplexing problem if dad is circumcised and your little boy isn’t. I get many parents asking how to take care of ‘things’. When you bring your baby boy home the foreskin is still firmly attached. In many boys it gradually becomes able to be retracted by about age two but it may take until a boy reaches puberty for this to happen – this is quite normal. It is also normal for little boys to touch “down there” – it’s how they learn what is usual. Never forcibly retract the foreskin because it can cause infection or scarring. It is a good idea to wait until your son retracts it himself, and then just wash it like any other body part being careful to wash off all traces of soap, which can irritate. Sometimes the tip of the penis may become red, sore and it may hurt to wee. This usually requires a visit to the doctor to check if it’s infected. Dr Julia Driscoll is a doctor at Apple Tree Medical Centre in Smithfield, Cairns. She is also the author of “My Story”, an interactive children’s book to reduce sibling rivalry. Milky Ways Milk is an excellent source of calcium, protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and zinc and therefore plays an important role in the diet of growing youngsters. For those unable to drink cow’s milk there is now a great range of alternatives available. Here’s a few we’ve compared to Pauls Trim Milk.
Soymilk There is a huge range of calcium-fortified soymilks available in supermarkets. Sanitarium So Good Lite and Vitasoy Soy Milky Lite are lactose and dairy free, and are similar in terms of energy, protein and calcium content to Pauls Trim. So Good Lite is also additionally fortified with magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, B12, B2 and B1.
Goat Milk Although not so popular in Australia, goat milk is actually the most popular animal milk in the world. It’s gentler on the stomach and often easier to digest. Pauls goat milk

Airport
family flying Tips • Allow plenty of time at the airport for check-in (remember things take longer with kids in tow) • Ask if the flight is full – if not you may be able to sit next to a vacant seat • Check out the Cairns Airports covered car park with extra wide parking spaces for young families (there are also covered walkways all the way into the terminal). • Bring entertainment for the kids – activity packs can be purchased at the airport and a Smiggle store will soon be opening in T2.
As an important international and domestic aviation hub, Cairns Airport has undergone some major renovations over the last couple of years and there are still a lot of exciting things happening.

Kids Airfares Whilst children’s airfares on international flights are generally 75% of the full adult price, on domestic flights children now have to pay the full fare on all airlines in Australia. However, children under the age of two can fly free on most airlines providing they sit on a parents lap (with a safety belt during take off and landing). Sitting with a toddler on your lap may be acceptable for shorter domestic flights but before you commit to buying your tickets, try it at home first and see how long you can cope with them sitting on your lap.

Pirates
This month is the tenth anniversary of the international Talk Like a Pirate Day (19 September). It’s a silly idea but a good excuse for a pirate play date during the holidays. Who doesn’t love the excitement of reading maps and hunting for treasure, sword fighting and walking the plank?

The girls get to choose what activities they want to do by brainstorming in their patrols and sometimes they may choose to just chill out and watch a movie, play games or have a pamper night. The girls are also taught many life skills including the importance of contributing to the community. For example, many girls from our region help at the annual Special Children’s Christmas Party by doing face painting. carcasses no doubt kept their teeth cleaner than
Oral disease begins with a build up of bacteria in the pet’s mouth. This bacteria combined with saliva and food debris causes plaque to form. As the bacteria grow in the plaque and calcium salts are deposited, this plaque turns to tartar. Without treatment, this plaque and tartar build up may cause periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes red and swollen gums. The gums often recede and bleeding is common.

today’s tinned and dry food.
So what can we do to prevent oral disease in our pets? • Visit your vet yearly for a dental heath check up. • Encourage chewing to keep the teeth clean. Strips of raw meat flaps, raw chicken necks and wings, and raw bones all will help. • Hills T/D diet is a dry food specifically designed to clean the teeth. It can be fed as a total balanced diet for maximum effect or added to other foods. Drop into any of our clinics for a free sample. • If you are really keen toothbrushes and pastes specifically designed for dogs and cats can be used several times a week to keep their teeth clean.
