what’s new! Want to save some money? Want a more peaceful home life? My Funland Kids Club Launch Family Fun on the Inlet Paid Maternity Leave – Have Your Say Tilapia Terminators Wanted! All Things Indian

Check out new website www.cairnscoupons.com.au for discount coupons off a variety of products from local businesses.

This month Pak Mag are partnering with the Arbinger Institute to bring a non-profit seminar to Cairns for families. Authors of the international best sellers “’Leadership & Self Deception’’ and ‘’Anatomy of Peace”, Arbinger have discovered the underlying cause of conflict in any situation and this seminar will explore the path to peace in family life. Usual price is $395 for the 2-day seminar but as a special community event (the first of it’s kind in Australia) Cairns family members can attend for only $129. See page 13 for more information.

Stockland Cairns will be launching their new kids club on 20th September from 11am with lots of fun activities for the kids and a character meet and greet. Go along and find out more and sign up for membership.

Continuing on from the success of their Family Fun Nights on Tuesdays, Mondo’s at the Hilton will be holding a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ themed party on 23rd Sept from 5.30-8.30pm. The La Goons will be providing entertainment including face painting and a special themed meal with be on offer. Kids are encouraged to come dressed up as a pirate or girls can come in grass skirts and leis. Please book for parties of 6 or more.

Australia is one of only two developed countries without paid maternity leave. The government is currently looking in to the issue but unless there’s overwhelming community support they won’t set a minimum of at least 6 months. If you feel strongly that Australia should have paid maternity leave, sign your name on the petition at: www.getup.org.au/campaign/AllTheOtherKidsAreDoingIt

The Tilapia Terminators Fishing Challenge is on again on September 15/16 to help tackle the problem of noxious fish in our waterways. The Aloomba State School in their role as a Reef Guardian school will be conducting the event again this year and a grant from the Department of Mines and Resources has helped make it an even better community event. Four tagged tilapia will be released into the Mulgrave River before the competition day with prizes set aside for those who catch them. Not just for fun, this is a serious environmental cause. Doting Dads Which meal do you cook for the kids that they just love? I cook them a pasta dish with tuna, tomato and olives. I guess you could call it “putanesca”. I’m not sure they love it but I know they love me! Do you prefer mornings or evenings at your place? I like the mornings. No matter how late I’ve been up I like to see them in the morning, it put’s me in a good frame for the rest of the day and then I can crash out again after they’ve gone off! How much pocket money should kids get? The great thing about being a kid is you don’t really need money (those headaches come later!). My kids rarely get more than a twenty off me and if it is more I never get the change back. Funny that. What’s the best thing about being a Dad? Being needed - there are some times when only Dad will do. What’s your favourite family activity? Eating dinner together is nice or anything that is cheesy where you can have a laugh like theme parks. What have you learnt from being a father? Sometimes the kids are right and just because you’re the parent doesn’t give you the right to rule with an iron fist although some respect is good

with

Johnny Diesel

Who runs the household – mum, dad or the kids? Mum on an emotional level and Dad on a mechanical level although we take turns. Best piece of advice you’ve given to your kids? Don’t get too hung up with the pressures of school and your peers because it passes. How have your kids embarrassed you? I don’t think they have, that’s my job! What’s your favourite memory of your childhood? Going to the beach with my family. Everyone would be in a good mood and it usually involved ice-cream!

Looking After Your Camera Cameras are easy to take care of as long as you follow a few simple rules. One of the key things to remember is that cameras can never be too clean. If dirt and dust gets into a camera, picture quality will decrease. Purchase a camera cleaning kit. These are quite inexpensive. In the cleaning kit should be a “blower brush” which is something that should be used for removing the dust from the camera and lens. The blower brush can be used gently before cleaning the rest of the camera. If excess dust is left over it is likely to scratch the camera lens while trying to clean it. Once this is done, smudges on the body or screen can be cleaned off using a soft cloth in your cleaning kit. When cleaning the lens, more care needs to be taken. Remember the lens is just glass and this can be very easily scratched. Breathe on the front of the lens, fogging up the glass. At this point try using a soft lens cloth or lens cleaning tissue from the cleaning kit in a circular motion. Do not use normal tissues or your shirt or blouse as these materials are quite abrasive and will scratch the lens resulting in loss of image quality. Avoid dropping or bumping your camera, particularly on the lens. Protecting your camera from sand and water is also very important. Sand and water is the natural enemy of digital cameras. Cameras damaged by being subjected to water are usually damaged beyond repair. Stick on screen protectors can be applied to the screen on your camera to stop marks or scratches. Keep your camera in a padded camera bag or pouch to help protect it from minor bumps and falls.

Building stronger families.

Why it’s not always about who’s turn it is to do the washing up! by Jenny Pitman Does this story sound familiar? Recently my partner and I spent a weekend saying things to each other but not really communicating. On the surface everything was peaceful but underneath we both knew we had the hump with each other. Let me fill you in on the background story: That week, I had been left home alone with our 2-year old daughter on two evenings. I’d been busy all day either working or looking after her and hadn’t really had any time to myself. To make matters worse she’s been waking up a lot during the night and I’m usually the one who has to get out of bed to deal with her. Saturday mornings are usually reserved for me-time; I go to a yoga class whilst Daddy takes our daughter to her swimming lesson. I love Saturday mornings because I get to do something for myself. However, on this particular weekend, Daddy had had a late night and was too hung-over to take her swimming so I had to take her instead. In other words, I’ve been dealing with her single-handedly all week and now I even have to look after her on Saturday because Daddy is too inconsiderate (and smelly) to make sure he’s home early enough to take her swimming. Huh, the injustice! Daddy on the other hand was feeling tired and exhausted from working all week and needed to blow off some steam. He has the stress of being the major breadwinner and then he’s expected to come home and help with our daughter. He’s goes about these duties like a fatherly saint (‘I’m sooo helpful I really deserve a good night out”) and once a week he has his well-deserved social night with mates so he can have a break from the demands of work and family life. Occasionally he might have another evening out. The only way he can get a break is to go out. He’d love to have the house to himself occasionally but says nothing despite feeling resentful. I know he’s got the hump about something even though he pretends it’s all good. It all came to a head on Sunday afternoon over the washing up. Our daughter was having a tantrum because she wanted to go to the park but neither of us wanted to take her. We both wanted a siesta and hoped the other would take her but each of us resisted volunteering to do it. The conversation was strangled and going nowhere fast. Then I noticed he hadn’t washed his ‘late breakfast’

www.pakmag.com.au

dishes. Not only do I have to look after our daughter all week whilst Daddy’s beering it up but I also have to do all the washing up! Needless to say the whole family ended up having a tantrum of one type or another because none of us were getting exactly what we wanted. This is type of situation is pretty typical of the sort of dynamics that go on in relationships all the time and according to the Arbinger Institute the underlying cause of this conflict in our home is exactly the same cause in any conflict whether in the home, at work or in the community. You might think you’re simply arguing about who’s turn it is to do the washing up one day but there’s always a deeper underlying cause of the argument. . If you’d like to find out more about the Arbinger Institutes work and how it can help in your family, Pak Mag are delighted to be hosting a ‘non-profit’ public seminar for families in the Cairns region. The ‘Anatomy of Peace in Families’ is a 2-day seminar and will be led by John Cosgrove on 26 & 27 Sept (9-5pm) at the Hilton Hotel. This event is suitable for anyone interested in building stronger families – either their own or helping others with theirs. Price per person $129 (usual price $395). What family members are saying about Arbinger: “Because of the Arbinger seminar, and the things I’ve been able to do because of it, I can honestly say that I am happier now than I’ve been at any time since I was 7 years old.” -- Grandmother “I was angry all of the time and fought with my mother everyday over anything. I was depressed and dark. Since attending the seminar I don’t feel the need to fight with my mum anymore. I don’t see her as the cause of my problems any longer. I see her as a mum who gets scared for her children and who loves me.” -- Young Adult “This is going to help me and my marriage more than I can say.” -- Spouse

Men’s health checkup. by Elaine Seager

Most men spend more time and money maintaining the health of their car rather than their own health. For some reason men hate going to visit the doctor but research shows that regular checks and being informed are vital to staying healthy. So, in honour of Father’s Day, here’s your check list for assessing the health of the ‘Man of the House’:

Men’s Health Issues Heart Health Heart disease is the single biggest killer of men but it’s easy to improve heart health by making changes to his diet. Make sure he eats 5 fruit or veg a day and lots of oily fish (high in omega-3’s).

Ball games Testicular cancer has doubled in the past 20 years. It’s fairly rare but mostly seems to affect men under 35. Get your man to check himself regularly.

Prostate Cancer This has been in the headlines a lot recently with Alan Jones, Sam Newman and Dr. Harry all admitting they are suffering from the disease. Symptoms: A need to pass urine frequently, as well as having to wake up in the night to urinate, are common signs - although these symptoms are more often due to a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Other less common signs include pain

when passing urine, blood in the urine, impotence and hip or lower back pain.

Bowel cancer Bowel cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men and it mostly affects those in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Risk factors are excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking and a diet that is low in fibre but high in meat. High fibre diets lower the risk (lots of fruit and veggies).

Unhealthy Habits Smoking, Alcohol & Drugs Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health and addictions to alcohol and/or drugs can also lead to mental health problems. They might also affect performance in the bedroom so for your sake get him to clean up his act!

Overeating Emotional eating (ie. eating to make yourself feel better) is the cause behind most of our overweight population. Help him to realise the rut he’s in or get professional help.

Lack of exercise Exercise not only makes you look better but it also makes you feel better. It is vital for a sense of well being and even a regular walk along the beach is better than nothing. Get him out and about running around with the kids. continued overleaf...

Male problem areas

Feeling blue?

Problems with ‘the old boy’

Depression is a widespread but under-recognised problem in men. Signs that he may be depressed include: Making ‘put down’ comments about himself, changes in sleep or eating patterns, drinking or taking more drugs than usual, being angry, irritable, nervous, tearful, lack of energy (may even fail to go to work), letting things like personal hygiene go and a doom and gloom attitude. Get him to talk to his GP if you suspect this may be a problem.

What is a boy to do when something isn’t right down below? Always go to the doctor for advice – you don’t want to take risks with his biggest treasure and friend.

Stress management

Having the ‘snip’ Are you ready for carefree sex again and don’t want to be bothered with other contraceptives? It involves a day off work since he’ll need to rest his jewels on ice for the rest of the day. Most men are ticketyboo in a week. Payback time for childbirth?

Stress can contribute to a whole host of physical problems so it’s important to learn how to relax. Sitting in front of the TV at the end of the day doesn’t work. Go to the beach, do some sport or listen to some music when the working day is finished. Yoga classes are great for mental well being and also fabulous for stretching tight male bodies. If he doesn’t like the idea of being in a class with a bunch of ladies try one of Ian’s classes at the Cairns Yoga Academy.

Breakfast like a king. Here are 5 quick healthy breakfast ideas: • Porridge made in the microwave with sliced banana (or stewed apple and blueberry that you’ve stored in the freezer) • Scrambled egg made in the microwave with multigrain toast and vegemite • Yogurt with sliced fruit and a slice of multigrain toast (or why not make a breakfast smoothie?)

reader recipe from Louise Duncan, Bentley Park who wins our Smart Food for Smart Kids book thanks to Apostrophe Books at the Pier.

Sweet Potato Rosti 1 egg 2 tbsp plain flour 550g sweet potatoes, grated 1 red onion, grated 2 tbsp oil. 1. W hisk the egg and flour together in a bowl. Squeeze excess moisture out of the sweet potatoes. Stir them into the egg mixture, then add the onion. 2. H eat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Form the potato into four even-sized balls. When the oil starts to heat, add the balls in batches and press down with a spatula to form patties. 3. C ook for 4-5 minutes, until brown. Transfer to the oven and cook for 5-7 minutes.

The Humble Sweet Potato. Did you know…?

• Low sugar cereal such as Weetabix

It has the lowest glycemic rating amongst root veggies (ie. it causes a gradual rise in blood sugars making you feel satisfied for longer)

• Toasted raisin bread with cream cheese

It’s an excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, manganese, copper, dietary fibre, potassium and iron. It was once rated the healthiest vegetable!

Go for the Gold! by Allen Bonilla

With constant attention being dedicated to the Olympics lately it’s almost impossible not to be awed by the sheer dedication of our athletes in Beijing. Of course, only a very few athletes ever make it to the Olympics but for every swimmer, basketballer and cyclist, representing Australia, there are hundreds of young hopefuls, thousands of young enthusiasts and millions of weekend warriors who love nothing more than to indulge in their favorite sport. While there is no doubt that there are numerous health benefits associated with sports, it should not be ignored that bodily harm is a very real risk. The human body is often still developing well into its twenties. Before this time much of the skeleton is still relatively soft cartilage. Other structures of the body too are not fully developed and therefore may be more prone to injury.

Anyone who’s ever ignored the car’s warning light only to watch it balloon into a serious mechanical nightmare knows that the ‘walk it off’ mentality doesn’t pay off. Having regular chiropractic checkups is one way we can prevent today’s bumps and bruises from becoming tomorrow’s chronic pain nightmare. Chiropractors are also well trained to detect problems that may be serious enough to warrant medical attention.

Anyone who’s ever ignored the car’s warning light only to watch it balloon into a serious mechanical nightmare knows that the ‘walk it off’ mentality doesn’t pay off.

Whereas in the Olympic athlete even minor injuries are treated with serious consideration, the same cannot be said of our children on the field. All too often if an injury is not ‘bad enough’ to warrant medical help then we expect that there is nothing that can be done – the child is

www.pakmag.com.au

told to ‘walk it off’. These injuries however can have dire consequences for the body’s ability to function at its best as an adult.

Remember, even if your young one is not going for the gold this year, they still have a long journey ahead of them – and you never know, in 2012 it might be your little one’s time to shine. Dr. Allen Bonilla DC (USA)

Hi! It's me Jemma, how is everyone? Have you ever thought of having your party at the zoo? It is great fun! You not only get to see all the great animals we have, but you and your friends get to have party food and cake at our cafe. p.s They make really good chocolate crackles, everyone gets a lolly bag and the birthday girl /boy gets a great present from our gift shop. For something really special for your birthday you could ask your mum or dad to get you to have a photo with our cheetahs, Zeek and Zara, or with Nickelli, our Rhino. Even though he is big, he is very friendly and loves a scratch. There are our Lemurs, Lee and Mur, you know like the monkeys from Madagascar. It is nearly school holidays again and i think that is great! Not only do I get to spend more time at the zoo, but I also get to spend time with my horse, Casper. He is only two years old and is learning heaps and heaps as he grows up, but I love him and spend as much time as I can with him. See you when you have your party at the zoo,or when you come to see all our great animals. Bye Jemma XXXXX

BULLETIN #9 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.

FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS! Bulletin: Part IX

Last edition: After finding out that humans had caged all the fish on the reef, Eleese declared, “We need back up!” Getting out her Super Duper Water, Shock and Bad singing proof phone, she called the police to let them know what was going on. The boppers needed a plan to stop this disaster from going on and they needed it now. Suddenly, a shadow could be seen getting nearer and nearer to the Bopstars. “Hide!” whispered Trent.

While the boppers had been watching the repulsive figure from behind the bommie, another creature had snuck around behind the trio and captured the Bopstars with an escape-proof net. All of a sudden the trio began to feel a slight tingle. “Whaaaat’s haaappeniiiiing to meeee?” sluggishly stated Trent. The net appeared to be emitting some kind of electric charge which seemed to be making all three boppers drowsy and eventually, pass out. “Where are we?” asked Eleese, wearily awaking from her slumber. “It looks like some kind of undersea jail. Look!” stated Bree, pointing out of the cage. Surrounding the boppers in this undersea jail, were hundreds of other prisoners who had been captured by these revolting looking creatures. Amazed and disgusted, Bree stated, “Not only are they caging the fish…they seem to be capturing any humans who venture too close to their enclosure!”

Quickly and silently as they could, the boppers hid behind the closest bommie they could find and waited to uncover what the shadow actually was. Slowly… quietly…inch by inch, the figure immerged from the shadows. “What is it?” asked Trent, as he hid behind both girl boppers with his hands over his own eyes. The large figure appeared to be green and purple, with large blue spots. “It looks disgusting.” said Eleese, as she winced at how putrid and vomit provoking the colourful figure was. “It’s definitely not human and it also has gills!” whispered Bree. “LOOK OUT!” shouted Trent, but it was too late. With little warning, a large net was dropped on all three boppers. “We’re trapped!” said Eleese, trying to struggle free.

With that, one of the large unknown extraterrestrials came over to the cage. “BE QUIET!” bellowed the creature, which thundered over the ocean floor. Bree looked directly into the creature’s four eyes and demanded, “What do you want? Why are you doing this? You’ve got to stop!”

BROWN BEARS... GRRRRR! Another Threatened Species! Recently venturing up to Cairns Wildlife Safari, the three Brown bears were amazing to watch as they fed, as well as watching them lay about and cool off in their own pool. These large animals are often coated with different shades of brown, blonde, black fur and can also be a combination of the three. A distinguishing feature of the brown bear, is there large and round head with a concave facial profile. This helps differentiate these bears from others. Brown Bears are also VERY powerful and can break the neck and backs of large prey. The forearms end in massive paws with claws up to 15 cm in length which are mainly used for digging. Brown bear claws are not retractable, and have relatively blunt points. The largest populations are in Russia, with 120,000, the United States with 32,500, and Canada with 21,750. In Europe, there are 14,000 brown bears in ten separate fragmented populations, from Spain in the west, to Russia in the east, and from Scandinavia in the north to Romania and Bulgaria in the south. They are extinct in the British Isles, extremely threatened in France and Spain, and in trouble over most of Central Europe.

Bigger than the baby blues. by Mary M. Alward

Baby blues are a well known phenomenon when new mums experience feelings of sadness and inadequacy and wonder if they can cope with the life-changing challenges of parenthood ahead. After giving birth, hormones are raging causing new mums to experience overwhelming emotions that range from euphoria to depression. These feelings are normal and often disappear within two weeks of delivery. If not, the new mother is suffering from post-natal depression, also known as peripartum depression. What causes post-natal depression? Having a baby is a major life-changing event which brings about several factors that women need to adjust to in their new life as a parent including: the feelings of losing one’s identity, issues around weight gain, loss of control over your life, no free time, loss of time spent with spouse, being overwhelmed, stress, lack of sleep, feelings of inadequacy and changes in your routine. It takes most women some time to adjust to all of these but some women struggle more than others, particularly if they’ve been prone to suffering depression before.

Baby Blues vs. Post-Natal Depression The baby blues occur between 3-10 days after childbirth and affect around 80% of new mums. It usually involves feeling teary and overwhelmed but will gradually subside without the need for treatment. Post natal depression occurs from one month to a year after childbirth and affects about 1 in 6 new mums so it’s surprisingly common. If you’re worried whether you or someone close to you may be suffering from post-natal depression, the symptoms to look out for include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Sadness and crying (and not knowing why). Feelings of hopelessness. Lack of energy. Overeating or loss of appetite. Irritability. Guilt Loss of pleasure in things you previously took pleasure in. Heart palpitations. Headaches. Hyperventilating. Insomnia. Lack of interest in self or infant. Chest pain. Trouble focusing, remembering things or making decisions. • Being overwhelmed. continued overleaf...

pak babies - Bigger than the baby blues - continued... If you are suffering from any of these symptoms the most important thing to do is to acknowledge to yourself that you’re not coping and tell someone about the feelings that you’re experiencing. All new Mums need to have a strong support system in place to help you through those first few months and must be able to ask for and accept help wherever you can get it. Some of the strategies that can help you through include sleeping whenever the baby is asleep (getting as much sleep as possible is vital for your mental wellbeing), being ok with the housework not being done (not expecting yourself to be super-mum), asking family and friends for help (and telling them specifically what they can do for you) and getting out of the house everyday even if it’s just a walk around the block with the baby in a stroller. Many mothers also join mothers groups which are a great way to feel human again by socialising and talking with other new mums who are usually experiencing exactly the same things. It’s very easy as a new mum to get cabin fever and to feel that you’re on your own so it’s important to take steps to avoid these feelings especially if you’re prone to depression. How to treat post-natal depression The most common treatments for post-natal depression are a combination of medication and therapy. Your first step should be to talk to your doctor who can prescribe

hot product!

medication to alleviate the symptoms and also refer you to a therapist who will help you change the way you act, feel and think. Left untreated post-natal depression will affect not only the mother, but the entire family including the baby. It affects the way the mother cares for herself and her family and when the mother experiences feelings of guilt for lack of this care, the depression worsens and soon becomes a vicious circle. This can get completely out-of-hand if mum doesn’t seek treatment. Researchers have also found that post-natal depression affects the bonding between mother and baby and it can cause the child to suffer from low activity levels, experience behavioral problems, distress, delays in development and sporadic sleeping patterns. Babies need to see and sense happy smiley faces so it’s vitally important for both mother and child for you to seek help. Having a baby may be life-changing but it is also a joyous time in your life which you deserve to fully enjoy. If you are struggling to cope, don’t suffer in silence, seek help today. The earlier you seek help the faster you can recover. For more information go to www.beyongblue.org or see your doctor.

Upcoming New Children’s Car Seat Legislations By Alicia Douch Last month we talked about the new legislations that apply to prams in Australia but there are also going to be some new legislations coming up for children’s cars seats. These proposed laws are likely to be introduced early next year and follow research that showed that children are being moved too early into seats which are not suited to their size. This increases the risk of injury or potential fatalities. The new reform has been made in response to calls from road safety experts, Police and the community in order to make car safety better for our younger generation. One of the key changes will be to define the laws in terms of the child’s age rather than their weight to make it easier for parents. Most parents can easily state their child’s age, but find it hard to keep track of their weight. The guidelines are outlined as follows: Birth to 6 months: Babies up to 6 months will require to be restrained in a rearward facing capsule or car seat reclined in the rearward facing angle. 6 months to 4 years: Forward facing car seat with an inbuilt harness is needed for a baby from 6mths right up to 4 years of age. 4 – 7 years: From 4- 7 years, a child can be in a booster seat, using a harness attachment which attaches to the anchor point in the car and an adult seat belt is threaded through it. 7 years up: From 7 years, a child can use an adult seat belt, if they are properly restrained. Children up to 4 years of age must be restrained in the

www.pakmag.com.au

rear of the vehicle at all times and a child aged from 4-7 years is allowed to be restrained in a booster seat in the front seat only if all other rear positions are occupied by children under 7. It is advised that you do not allow your child to sit in the front passenger seat until they are 12 years old, however, if you do need to use the front seat, please slide it back as far as possible to prevent injury from air bags in the case of an accident. Juniors has a wide range of suitable car seats from birth right up to 7 years. If you want to find out more about the new legislations or have any questions please come in to see us in our store and we’d be happy to help you. We stock the child harness and accessories such as extension straps and anchor point kits.

Adventures in toilet training.

by Victoria Williams

I’m spending a lot of time on my knees at the moment. I haven’t collapsed under the weight of parental responsibility, nor am I praying for release from domestic drudgery (although that’s worth a try). No, I have mostly been either cleaning up bodily fluids or wiping the small bottom from whence they came. It’s potty training time, a time of endless laundry, copious puddles and mysterious smells. I used to love my baby’s bottom. It was perfect and dimpled and soft. Now it is a source of constant anxiety, a grenade that could go off at any time, although it’s most likely to explode either when I am at the supermarket checkout, or when I have just told my mother-in-law that potty training is going brilliantly. This is the third child I have attempted to get out of nappies. With my first, I read and absorbed endless parenting books. I took them all at their word and believed that if I applied myself to the task, my son would be clean and dry within days. I prepared star charts for encouragement. I bought lovely big boy undies featuring favourite characters. I bought fun wipes with pictures of trains on the packet. None of it worked. Within a week the special underwear was ruined, the wipes were all gone and the chart sported a sad, lone star, rather than the constellations of achievement I had anticipated. Eventually, after a particularly spectacular destruction of some Thomas the Tank Engine undies, we resorted to more concrete forms of encouragement – crisps, chocolate, a car, whatever it took. We developed a system of bribes so complex it made working out your family benefits seem easy. One crisp for sitting on the toilet; several Hula Hoops and some chocolate for a wee; hula hoops, chocolate, and a tickertape parade for underwear still clean at the end of the day. And through all this, the books instructed, I was to remain cheerful, encouraging my child that next time, next time, surely, he would know to reach the toilet before the poo reached the floor. This was the hardest part of all.

38

In the end, the realisation that cleanup operations took away some of my son’s valuable train track time was enough to convince him that unsoiled underwear was the way to go. Nappies are a distant memory for both my older children, despite my fears at one point that they would be heading for University with a packet of Huggies under their arm. One day, it will be the same for my youngest. I may put in a few quick prayers while I’m on my knees, though, in case it helps.

The lovely Lakes Resort, Cairns. by William Anthony

If first impressions are an indicator of resort quality, A+ is to be given to The Lakes Resort & Spa Cairns. The almost too friendly and helpful reception staff was all too eager to please, helping my family with our luggage and delivering it, and us, directly to our room. The short ride through the lakes really exuded the beauty of our location with beach pools, trimmed with beautiful white sand, and palm trees, lining all areas of the resort. Once inside our apartment, it was so relieving to find that the living areas were so large with so much space to move around. Even though we weren’t expecting to stay in the apartment the whole time, it was still nice to know that we could lounge around the rooms if we wished to and let the little ones spread out. The 2 bedroom apartment incorporated all the necessary utilities, including: - Kitchen - Washing Machine/Dryer - Outdoor balcony - Bathroom and Ensuite - Air-con - Spa Bath - Austar television - Undercover car parking - Safe deposit box And with added amenities of the resort: - Gymnasium - Heated Spa - Sauna - Tennis Courts - BBQ Areas - ATM The complete package is very, very attractive.

Before I was even able to lie back in the couch, the kids had unpacked and had changed into their bathers, begging to go down to the beach pool which could be easily seen from our balcony. Giving in quite easily, as I wanted to get rid of my pale complexion and get some sun, we ventured down to the pool. The most pleasantly surprising aspect that I found at the pool wasn’t the Barbeque area, the drink machine or even the beach lounges. It was the fact that there were 6 other families enjoying the sunshine and water as much as we were. By the end of the afternoon, the six families had formed one large extended family and all the children would definitely be sleeping well tonight. We did get invited to stay for an afternoon bbq, however, I had promised the wife that we would have a drink at the Lime Bar, dine out at the award winning LAGO restaurant and I was definitely keen to see what all the fuss was about. What to do for breakfast was the next decision to make. Even thought apartment had a fully functioning kitchen, my wife and I were definitely not that keen to do any washing up, so the breakfast specials at the Rambutan

Bistro sounded perfect to start the day. With family specials available on the full buffet, I knew that everyone would be much happier than if I had cooked. a trip to... This month William Anthony visits

Tarzali Lakes.

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city can be very rewarding and Tarzali Lakes is definitely a spot to do exactly that. Hidden halfway between Malanda and Milla Milla, this truly enchanting and peaceful location is perfect for families, friends and even school excursions. Upon arrival, it is hard not to notice the beautiful scenery that stretches over the 40 acres of rolling pastures and the 15 ponds that are stocked full of many different fish. Barramundi, Jade Perch, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Eels, all call this location their home and are eagerly awaiting your baited hook. Not only can you fish (catch & release), but you can also throw a yabby pot in to try your luck with the Red Claw, have a chip of golf to see who can hit the target in the middle of the pond, watch the platypus swimming in their own ‘Platypus Haven’ or just relax in the kiosk with an appetizer from their all new menu, themed “Aussie-Thai”. Even if you don’t want to fish, you can purchase ‘as fresh as it gets’ fish to take home and prolong your fishy experience.

pet tips & hints

Horsin’ About... By Tash Riedel Like most little girls growing up, I clearly remember begging my parents for a pony. “Oh please Mummy, can I have a pony? I promise I’ll look after it and feed it and groom it and ride it everyday. Please, please, please!”. But no matter how many times I put on those big pleading puppy dog eyes and pouted my bottom lip, my mother wasn’t swayed. I guess it may have had something to do with my previous experiences of pet ownership. Namely, 1 goldfish – deceased; 1 mouse – deceased; 1 budgie – deceased. Not the best track record I must admit. So, I had to make do with an imaginary pony called ‘Buster’ and reading every book on horses I could borrow from our local library. Of course, I now know that owning a horse is a huge responsibility with a lot of hard work and also quite a large expense. Buying a horse is not something you do spontaneously like buying a family budgie. Horses themselves are an expensive purchase but there’s also a lot of additional costs associated with owning a horse that you’ll need to weigh up before buying one. Some of the basic necessities that you’ll need and which can get quite expensive include a bridle, saddle, saddle blanket, rug, halter and lead rope, grooming brush, hoof pick, feed tin and water container. You’ll also need to find a safe storage area to keep all your equipment when not in use and then, on top of all this, you need your own riding outfit which includes a hard hat and good quality riding boots. Then there’s caring for the horse. The food that you need to buy will depend on whether the horse be kept in a paddock or stable. Horses kept in a paddock may need some supplementary feed when grass becomes eaten down whilst stabled horses will need to be fed continuously on food that you purchase including mineral supplements. And, don’t forget there’ll be shoeing and vet bills to consider. You might need to see a vet for the horse’s teeth, worm control, coughs and colds, and for vaccinations against diseases such as strangles and tetanus. Horses kept in paddocks may also be prone to cuts and scratches which will also increase your vet bills.

Owning a horse means being prepared to visit them every day (unless you can afford to have them kept in an equestrian centre). The on-going daily maintenance required means checking that: It has adequate fresh clean water and food It hasn’t had an accident (eg. been kicked by another horse or is caught up in the fence) It doesn’t have it’s rug hanging around it’s neck or leg strap cutting in to him It hasn’t been frightened or attacked by dogs It hasn’t escaped on to busy roads Horses are a major commitment so be well-prepared before you make your purchase.

Super special spring garden by William Anthony

Feel like getting some fresh veges or some beautiful flowers for the upcoming summer? Then you are at the right place. This month we show you how to make your very own flower and vege garden! To start this garden, all you need is:

- A 2metre x 2metre spot to put the garden - Some Garden Soil - approx 3 bags should be plenty - Some different seeds - depends on what you want to grow - Some plastic sheeting - And some tools - Shovel & gloves.

Step 1: Getting the spot just right! When you have found the location for your garden, make sure to clear away any leaves and sticks so that you have a bare soil base. Step 2: Plastic works a Treat! Now that you have the base ready, lay your plastic over the ground so that it covers most the area where you want to put your garden. Step 3: Soiling the Garden Now that the base is ready to go, use the potting mix/garden soil to cover the plastic and spread it out in a rectangle. Step 4: Line and seed! Now that the garden is almost done, make a few small troughs in soil and sow the seeds. I planted some beans and flowers, but you can also plant some herbs, veges or tomatoes. Really, you can plant whatever you want that is suitable for this climate. Step 5: Water and were away! The last step is to step back and water the soil. Give it a good soaking and leave it for a few days and you should be able to see some shoots. There you have it, the PaK Mag Spring Garden! If you have any tips or photos of your own Spring Garden, please send them to info@pakmag.com.au and you may see yourself in the next issue. Cheers and Happy DIYing!

Backyard Safety Poisonous Plants by Elaine Seager

Most parents are busily child-proofing the house as soon as their child starts to become mobile but what about the backyard? Of course fences, water hazards and play equipment should all be checked to make sure they are safe but what about the plant life in your garden? Do you know which plants are safe for your toddler to munch on and which could be potentially poisonous? Flowers and berries in the garden are like flashing beacons to a curious toddler but many are poisonous when eaten. One seed from a Yellow Oleander, for example, can be potentially lethal for a young child to eat. Other examples of plants with toxic parts to be careful of include: Angels Trumpet, Arum Lily, Autumn Crocus, Azalea, Bird of Paradise (seeds), Castor Oil Plant, Dumb Cane, Lantana (berries), Jessamine, Laburnum, Naked Lady, Nightshades and Poinsettia leaves. If you’re not much of a gardener and don’t know the identity of the plants in your garden, first of all go to www.kidsafe.com. au where you will find a complete list of all the plants in

Queensland which are potentially dangerous. Most of the plants on this list are grown around the Cairns area although some are coastal and others are more likely to be present in the Tablelands. If you’re still not sure talk to your local nursery or contact the Poisons Information Centre on 131126. And, don’t assume fruit and vegetables are always safe because we eat them. Watch out for these toxic parts: Avocado - Leaves Bay Tree – Berries Potato - Green skin Rhubarb - Leaf blade Stone Fruit (Apricot, Cherry, Peach, Plum) - The kernel contains a compound that releases cyanide when eaten Tomato - Green parts of fruit, leaves and vines

Queensland Kidsafe recommend the following in order to prevent poisoning from plants in your garden:

DO NOT

DO

Assume a plant is not poisonous because birds or other wildlife can eat it

Make sure ALL plants, both indoor and outdoor are accurately identified

Use any part of a plant for cooking or medicinal use unless fully aware of its attributes

Keep poisonous plants out of children’s reach, eg.remove or securely fence off all identified poisonous plants

Teach your children never to put leaves, stems, seeds, nuts or berries from any plant into their mouths

Keep a record of ALL plants in your garden Take a sample of a plant to your local nursery if unsure what the name of the plant is

DO NOT Give them a drink, give them salty water or induce vomiting. Doing any of these is either ineffective or can make the situation worse.

48

Keep the Poisons Information Centre phone number next to your phone 13 11 26. If you do find your child with half a bush hanging out of their mouth and you suspect a case of poisoning: Remove the plant from the child’s mouth Rinse their mouth out Phone the Poisons Information Hotline

eating out

Mudslide Café & Juice Bar The Mudslide Café is a rarity in that it offers good food at a very reasonable price close to the Esplanade. It has been a closely guarded secret amongst the local corporate market, which often pops in there to pick up delicious pre-prepared sandwiches, since it opened two years ago. Whether or not in a suit, the Mudslide caters mainly for the local market with 70% of it’s business coming from its local regulars. So, if you happen to be down on the Esplanade during the Festival and want to feed the kids without breaking the bank, the Mudslide is a great option. They offer a fabulously diverse menu with fresh produce purchased from Cairns’ famous Rusty’s markets and local suppliers. For breakfast there’s a good selection of menu items ranging from various types of toast for $4.90 through to all the traditional cooked breakfasts up to $9.50 (for bacon, scrambled eggs, tomato, sausage, mushrooms and toast). There are also some delicious omelettes (we tried omelette with chicken breast, avocado, baby spinach and cheese – yummy) and some slightly more unusual items such as the breakfast sandwich stack. Of course, there is also fresh fruit and muesli for those watching their waistline. The Mudslides signature dish for lunch is the very popular Baby Spinach and Haloumi Salad. All of their salads are freshly made and very tasty. There’s also a selection of 6 different burgers on foccacia bread, which offer a great value feed at $7.90-$9.50, plus some assorted light meals and sandwiches either ready-made or made to order. The kids menu offers great value with prices ranging from $3.50-$5.00 and there’s also books and colouring-in available to keep them entertained. To top it all off they do a large range of delicious fresh juices, smoothies and milkshakes from $4.50-$6.80). We tried their most popular juice - watermelon,

apple, orange, lemon and mint juice – which was absolutely mouth-watering. There is some on-street dining available with more seating inside where the café manages to be a combination of both cosy and funky! It’s bright, welcoming and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. One of the great things about the Mudslide that makes it stand out from the rest is that they cater for external functions including family picnics on the Esplanade. Simply call them up and order your food and pick it up on the way to your hassle-free picnic at the Lagoon with the kids! The Mudslide is open for breakfast and lunch 6 days a week (exc. Sundays).

time for a break GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED: 1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptise cats. 2) When your Mum is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair. 3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person. 4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato. 5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food. 6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair. 7) Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time. 8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk. 9) Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts. 10) The best place to be when you're sad is Grandpa's lap.

GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED: 1) Raising teenagers is like nailing Jell-O to a tree. 2) Wrinkles don't hurt. 3) Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts. 4) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground. 5) Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside. 6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy.
