Gardner’s multiple intelligences have been used to identify the many potential areas of child giftedness. These types of intelligences, along with examples of activities which reflect them, include: • Spatial – doing puzzles, drawing and painting. • Verbal/language – writing, reading and speaking. • Logic and mathematics – numbers and problem solving. • Body – dancing and sport. • Musical – singing, composing and playing an instrument. • Naturalistic – understanding the natural world. • Interpersonal – relating to others, communication and leadership. • Intrapersonal – reflecting and being self-sufficient. A child who is performing, or can perform, in one of these areas significantly better than might be expected given his or her age might be gifted. This being said, some accelerated learning programs for gifted children require a standardised assessment of the child’s performance to be carried out by a professional, such as a psychologist, before enrolment. Ms Hewton believes such acceleration and extension programs can be extremely beneficial for gifted children, especially given gifted

She says that while education policy requires that state schools identify gifted students and provide them with some kind of program, you may still need to shop around to get the best for your child. “The policy requirement is not backed by adequate funding, but hopefully there are schools with action plans that include differentiation, ability grouping and acceleration in its many forms (rather than just gradeskipping).” While schools can be very valuable in nurturing gifted kids it is still important for parents to stay informed on the topic. “Knowledgeable parents may be better able to negotiate with schools for gifted education provisions, or make more satisfactory alternative arrangements for their children’s education.” “If parents know what giftedness is and what gifted children need, they will be able to better support the gifted child. In some cases the high ability child can be recognised within the family and celebrated,” Ms Hewton says.

While she believes that giftedness is more than just grasping schoolwork quickly and easily, she does concede that intelligence lies at the heart of gifted performance.
“It does not refer only to the profoundly gifted, but to anyone who has a high ability, anyone who is capable of performing at the level of excellence in any worthwhile area of human endeavour.”
“Giftedness relates to the brain, to intellect, or general intelligence. You cannot perform at levels of excellence, i.e., gifted performances demonstrating mastery, in any area – not arts, not sports – without intellect. It is not usually

“Gifted children flourish in school environments where teachers are positive and provide options for them to proceed as fast as they want, and in greater depth and complexity throughout the curriculum,” she says. “They appreciate teachers who are actively looking for the gifted and know how to recognise and extend these high ability children.”

In the 1980s, psychologist Howard Gardner put forward a theory in which he identified multiple areas of intelligence, many of which don’t necessarily relate to traditional academics.

managing Allergies One of the main problems parents encounter when they have children with allergies or intolerances is how to prepare a variety of meals that the whole family can enjoy, so here are a few tips to make dinnertime more manageable. [1] Plan ahead Writing a weekly family meal plan will save you a lot of time and stress in the long run. Food planning is also a great way to involve the kids so make it a family ritual to sit down and plan the meals for the week. Getting the kids involved in the cooking is also a great way for them to learn about food.

published by their favourite author. Collecting can instil a sense of pride, ownership and responsibility in children. They learn how to take care of precious items, they may begin to understand the value of money and also learn about history as they start to research the origins of their collectables. For example, collecting stamps and coins will inevitably teach children about history, geography, different cultures, famous people, monarchies and many other facts as they collect these items from different countries. Collections can also stem from travel, with people collecting things from every country they visit such as snow globes, spoons, postcards or even a country’s currency and then displaying the notes and coins in an album.

It forced them to spend time together and she says it reconnected the family and strengthened their bond as a family unit. One of the best family activities that can be enjoyed together and enhances bonding and quality family time is playing boardgames. A national survey conducted by Hasbro Games suggests playing boardgames helps with educational development and social skills as well as improving self esteem, concentrations levels include improving patience, teamwork, sharing, critical thinking and good sportsmanship. There is now such a wide range of boardgames on the market that children from as young as two or three can be involved. These are the most popular

Then of course, there are the classic family favourites such as Monopoly, Cluedo, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Articulate, Cranium, Scattergories, Pass The Bomb, Pictureka, Celebrity Head and Charades. Little Artists
Story thanks to Amanda Cranston
Inspired by two new books with great creative ideas for kids, Amanda Cranston tries out some new craft activities
Faux Lino Printing p44 You will need: • Craft foam • Sharp pencil • Texta • Scissors • Water-based printing ink • Large plastic sheet (perspex or polypropylene) • Roller • Paper • Metal spoon [1] With a sharp pencil, scratch an illustration into the sheet of craft foam. Draw the picture onto the foam first in texta, then scratch over the lines with texta. Grooves need to be scratched deeply into the foam, then you can cut the foam into a shape or around your picture after you have made your illustration. [2] Roll your ink out nice and smooth so you can get a thin, even coverage on the roller.
By Carly Schwerdt, Penguin Books RRP $39.95
[3] Once the roller is evenly coated, gently roll it over the foam until the foam is evenly covered with ink. Make sure you hold it flat
while rolling so foam won’t stick to your roller. Your scratched grooves shouldn’t have any ink in them, if they do you have probably used too much ink or your grooves might not be deep enough. [4] Lay a sheet of paper on a clean surface. Carefully place the inked foam facedown onto the paper and gently smooth it flat. With the back of a spoon rub the foam in circular motions, pressing it firmly in to the paper. [5] Gently lift one corner of the foam away from the paper and peel it back, being careful not to smudge your print (it can help to hold the opposite end of the foam down as you do this). You can make many prints using your foam template, simply wash the foam and the plastic sheet and start again.
