standards that describe the quality of learning your children should attain at different points in their schooling. The Naplan testing at years 2, 4, 6 and 8 provide an indicator as to how our children are measuring up to these standards. This standardised and publicised type of student/school assessment was previously reserved only for high school years, particularly Year 12. Now that it’s being implemented in the Primary years it is putting a lot more pressure on our younger children, particularly since schools and teachers are also increasingly seeing these assessments as a way to see how they too are measuring up.

Solutions collaborative

legal
matters By Catherine Ross Accredited Family Law Specialist
Collaborative Law is a new process that enables everyone to win during family separation
10
www.pakmag.com.au
ollaborative Law is a fresh alternative for separated couples needing to divide their property and decide where their children will live. It provides a vehicle for couples to negotiate in good faith, free from the threat of litigation. It also gives them the opportunity to take control of their own matters and work together towards a solution. Rather than each party ‘lawyering up’ and working against each other to achieve the best result for themselves, the idea is that the parties and their lawyers work collaboratively as a team to find creative solutions to meeting both parties’ needs. Of course compromises will need to be made, and a party may not always walk away with everything they want, but a ’win-lose’ scenario is avoided. The collaborative process involves a series of four-way meetings between parties and their lawyers, rather than the traditional practice of each party meeting privately with their own lawyer, who then communicates with the other party’s lawyer and the Court. In the four-way meetings, the parties and their lawyers decide in open discussions the issues that need to be dealt with, work out an action plan, and move together toward a final, enforceable agreement. Other professionals may be involved in the meetings to assist the parties reach an outcome, such as accountants, financial advisors, valuers and counsellors. All participating lawyers and other professionals must have been trained in the collaborative process.
What are the advantages of this process? • You and your former partner control the process and the outcome • Support is provided by trained professionals from a variety of disciplines • Confidential and private • Future-focused, rather than dwelling on the past • Interest-based, non-adversarial negotiation • Ability to create win/win solutions • Painful and expensive court proceedings can be avoided Collaborative Law may not be for everyone but it is definitely not a soft option. It requires commitment to the process and to achieving an outcome suitable to both parties. Collaborative Law may be an excellent option for you and your former partner if you are both willing to: • prioritise the needs of your children, • communicate openly, honestly and respectfully, and to listen to each other, • acknowledge that each of you have needs that have to be addressed, and • be transparent in information sharing – putting all your cards on the table. For more information contact MacDonnells Law on 4722 0220 to arrange an appointment with one of our Queensland-wide Family Law specialists who are accredited in the practice of Collaborative Law.

loan specialist Queensland Country Credit Union has experienced a substantial growth in demand for home loans recently, a welcome sign of a possible recovery in the housing market. The recent announcement to hold interest rates is also expected to continue to drive this trend. Queensland Country Credit Union’s General Manager Sales and Service, Cameron Thompson said the increase in enquiries for lending had been notable in recent months. “We have had limited enquiries about investment loans in the past 18 months, but more recently we’ve experienced keen interest from investors, particularly at the lower price end of the new home building market,” he said.

spinal Health
Most people don’t see the connection between chiropractic care and pregnancy. However there are four stages in which having an optimally working nervous system and structural support can help both mother and child. [1] Pre-Conception Chiropractic care prior to conception promotes a more regular menstrual cycle and optimal uterine function. It prepares the body to be strong, supple and as balanced as possible to carry the pregnancy.
[2] Pregnancy Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy helps maintain balance, alignment and flexibility. When the growing baby is comfortable it can assume the optimal birthing position.

Wardrobe wake up
Tara works full time in childcare and devotes herself to her two small children (both under three). So, like many mums she is very busy and has neglected her appearance and fashion sense.

Hair Hair stylist Crystal: “Tara has had the same long blonde hair for years and was ready for a complete change. Long blonde hair is actually quite high maintenance – the roots need regular attention and you need to wear make up to put colour in your face, so it’s not ideal for busy mums.

campaign the State Library of Queensland has launched the Dads Read Program with the aim of raising awareness of the importance and benefits of fathers reading with their children, particularly in their early developmental years.
The Libraries offer a great resource that’s freely accessible to everybody in the community. They also play a significant role in promoting reading amongst children through their various activities ranging from baby rhyme times to school holiday

their literacy. However, it seems as though boys are falling behind with an international survey conducted by UNESCO across 43 countries showing girls have much higher reading scores than boys. There is strong evidence that suggests boys don’t see reading as cool and often prefer to spend time outside with mates or helping dad “do stuff”. For this reason it is critical that fathers encourage their sons to read by being positive role models. If you find reading and literacy a challenge, the public libraries in the region from Mackay to Hinchinbrook and out to Charters Towers, called “Literate communities are empowered communities”. Shane Webcke and Matt Bowen are supporting campaigns to encourage dads to be positive reading role models, especially for their sons, writes John Scott
Ways to encourage boys to read: •
Go to the library as a family so your kids can see both mum and dad borrowing books and also so dad can help them choose books.
•
Make reading at home a normal activity that’s part of your daily routine. Even if dad is seen enjoying reading newspapers or magazines, they will begin to see reading as an activity to embrace.
•
Dads should take the time to sit with their sons and read together. This enables you to talk about what he is reading and show that you are genuinely interested.

Or they may simply feel like they just have to do the ‘manly’ thing and battle it out on their own.
