Santa has agreed to make an appearance at our next Tropical Xmas PakClub at Cazalys on the 5th, we’ll be at Carols by Candlelight selling glow sticks to raise money for the Mayors Christmas appeal on the 12th AND, because we’re sooo excited about Christmas, we’re also running a BIG sensational promotion called the “12 Elves Of Christmas”. Go to page 49 to find out how you could win your family a daily prize and go in to the draw to win VIP status at Birch Carroll & Coyle entitling you to a whole year’s worth of free cinema movies for your family. On the home front Jordan has turned in to an escape artist. I thought it was bad enough that he can now get out of his cot but this morning the doorbell rang at 7am and when I went to open the front door there was Jordan with one of my neighbours. Turns out he was playing up the road somewhere while I was lying in bed enjoying the peace and quiet so I really feel like a good mother today!

Sibling rivalry Story thanks to Shannon du Plessis

What do you to do if your children fight all the time? Shannon du Plessis seeks out some helpful solutions. After the birth of your first baby, you cannot

Teaching your child how to negotiate can help with swapping toys, for example: “I’ll give you

• Ensure each child has their own space that will not be interfered with by another child. • Don’t compare one child to another, and don’t take sides.

It sounds like a good idea at the time, but

• Set up some family rules about behaviour

Parents should also show confidence in them

by telling the children calmly that you know

they can work it out together, and then leave

There will be many times when conflict between them causes parents more stress than a toddler’s temper tantrum in the supermarket. This is a normal part of the growing up process. Arguments between siblings are one of the ways they learn the importance of respecting other people’s feelings and belongings, how to share, how to co-operate, how to be a friend and how to love. It is also one of the ways they learn how to sort out their problems. But, of course, they have to learn how to argue fairly and without hurting each other, and this is the way they will learn how to sort out problems in future relationships. Continual fighting between brothers and

and upset, but that it’s not OK to hit someone. If they’re not sharing a toy try getting down to their level and asking them to give you the toy. Suddenly, the thought of not having the toy at all makes children want to share it with their sibling.

TIPS for preventing conflict: • Spend time with each child regularly.

• If a child is hurting another child, separate them and keep the angry child with you to help them calm down. Distract them with a new activity if you need to, but remember it’s better for them to find a solution to the original problem. • Keep in mind that the child who seems to start the argument is not always the one who does so.

• Allow each child to own something special they don’t have to share.

• Encourage them to apologise to each other after a fight.

pass on the salt On average, Australian adults consume between eight to 12 grams of salt a day, almost double the six grams per day that the National Health and Medical Research Council recommends. And all that salt is killing us. Too much salt causes high blood pressure, which the World Health Organization blames for 62 per cent of strokes and 49 per cent of coronary heart disease. The ingredient in salt that causes the problem is sodium. In Australia, about 75 per cent of our sodium comes from processed foods (meats, cheeses, bread and cereals). A further 15 per cent

embracing potential

Unlocking your child’s limitless potentialities starts here If you’re sick to death

Local SEA FM Announcer Lou Morrow shares parenting tips: Well it’s nearly here and it’s either got you singing and stringing up the tinsel or filling you with dread! Christmas can draw out some strong emotions from both ends of the spectrum. Not surprisingly, stress always seems to rear its ugly head because, let’s face it, the pressure is ON! We’re bombarded by messages implying we’re not good parents if we don’t provide the family with all the bells and whistles...the best toys, the most spectacular feast, the biggest tree and the happiest atmosphere. It’s tempting to put ourselves further into debt to bankroll an extravagant affair but keeping things in perspective can save a lot of heartache and money. Christmas doesn’t need to be traditional. As much as we’d love to give our families the best of the best at this time of year, it pays to remind ourselves that giving them the best we can is perfectly acceptable. They say the simple things in life are often the best, so if you’re fortunate enough to have happy, healthy kids, that’s reason enough to have a very merry Christmas.

daddy diary 19 Potts, one half of the Sea FM morning crew, continues his chronicles of first time fatherhood It’s the moment all parents are waiting for and no, I’m not talking about a sleep in. It’s when your child takes their first steps. I’ve been really keen for Noah to start walking because the sooner he starts the sooner he can kick the footy in the backyard with me. We’ve had the video camera on stand-by a few times to capture his moment but unfortunately when he sees it he usually just sits down and smiles. He’s such a poser.

16

But then it suddenly happened. He pulled himself up against the wall and he was off! Of course the video camera wasn’t there but luckily I actually managed to catch his first steps on my iphone. I counted 45 steps and, whilst he did look a bit like ET, wobbly on his feet and arms flailing everywhere, he even managed to negotiate around a salad spoon that he left on the floor after chewing it. I will cherish this video for a lifetime. And so Christmas is upon us again. This time last year when Noah was five months old we were taking embarrassing photo’s of him dressed as an elf. Twelve months on and nothing much has changed. We’re off to Perth for Christmas to visit family and while Noah will be more fun this year I guess next year is when Christmas will really start to get exciting with him. I can’t wait. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year. See you in 2011.
