As I write this, it is 4 days before Christmas, I am exactly 8 months pregnant and I am not looking forward to picking my editor’s photo for the month. As much as everyone says “Wow you look so wonderful”, you can’t help the little voice in your head that says “yeah right, I know you’re just being nice”!

We are getting very excited about our little arrival in February and are busy preparing the magazine for the next few months ahead so that you, our readers, can keep up-to-date. So, we’d love to hear from you if you’ve got any info, stories or ideas you’d like us to cover whilst I’m getting used to motherhood! I have to say that, after 14 years of entertaining everyone else’s children, I’m still in a little bit of denial about becoming a parent myself. I’m hoping that all of the times I’ve hyped up your kids, fed them lollies and then handed them back doesn’t come back and bite me on the bottom. Judging by my dancing belly we already have a little Bopstar in there already so I really don’t think he or she will need any sugar! God help us. I’m hoping to have one more editor’s note before the birth assuming everything goes to plan so for a bit of fun we’re having a guessing competition (see our baby section). Until next time, we hope you find our holiday edition useful, and please make sure you tell our advertisers you love our magazine so they know their investment in Pakmag is worthwhile. Have a cool drink for me, and spare me a thought as I melt in what feels like the hottest summer of my life! Happy New Year & all the best for 2009, Bree

what’s new! Keep Your Nippers Safe The Ultimate Gig Guide: Small Business Success Calling Budding Writers!
The school holidays are here and the wierdo’s are already out and about. According to local police there have been several incidents recently of strange men pinching bottoms and looking up young girls skirts in our shopping centres. There has also been a case of an attempted child abduction which is yet to be solved. Shopping centres are apparently still being treated as child care centres by some parents who haven’t arranged child care whilst they’re at work. Children as young as 7 are being left for several hours at a time without supervision which either leads to them causing trouble or being exposed to danger. Don’t risk your child’s safety this summer – see our school holiday guide for classes and programmes. If you want to find out all the latest entertainment information for Cairns check out new website www.entertainmentcairns.com. Doting Dads with
Mark Littler
Sea FM Drive announcer Which meal do you cook for the kids that they just love? Lemon chicken and rice. The 2 minute noodles are a favourite snack too. Do you prefer mornings or evenings at your place? Mornings. It’s when I spend the most time with the kids as I’m on air until 6pm weekdays and don’t get home until late. My wife starts work early so it’s the Dad and kids team in the morning which works like a well oiled machine. Breakfast, dressed, teeth, hair, make lunches, fill water bottles then off to school. How much pocket money should kids get? Gold coin for chores, though as the kids get older and want to buy things, the asking price seems to go up. What’s the best thing about being a Dad? Watching them grow and helping them learn. You actually start to learn a lot yourself. We always seem to be looking something up on the internet, and quite often, the old fashioned way of getting information from books which we all enjoy.
What have you learnt from being a father? Listen. You can miss so much. The kids love telling you things about their day and asking questions about things that they want to know more about. Who runs the household – Mum, Dad or the kids? The kids. Our whole lifestyle is run by the kid’s activities, sport, school and their friends. We have two cars and it’s rare both are in the driveway at the same time. Best piece of advice you’ve given to your kids? Be you. Don’t try to be anyone else or change for anyone else. You are you and be proud of that. How have your kids embarrassed you? I embarrass them, they are always saying, “oh Dad”. What’s your favourite memory of your childhood? Camping and trail bike riding trips with friends and family. We rode motor bikes all day on dirt tracks exploring and then the campfire fun at night.
What’s your favourite family activity? Bike riding along some of the bike tracks around the southern suburbs of Cairns.

New Years Resolution

#
achieve your goals! By Domonique Bertolucci
If you want to make sure 2009 is your best year ever, setting some goals is a great place to start. Having a goal can help you to find your way from where you are now, to where you would like your life to be. At its simplest, a goal is a positive statement about something you would like to do, be or have - a statement about something you intend to make a reality in your life. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. Goals are some of the most powerful tools to inspire, encourage and motivate you to achieve your real success and happiness. It’s important to make sure your individual goals are small and simple. You want to set yourself up for success, not failure, so the simpler and easier to achieve that you can make your goals, the better. This doesn’t mean that your goals can’t challenge you, or be exciting, but make sure you know what the small and simple steps are needed to achieve this challenging and exciting outcome. Did you know that although most people set New Years Resolutions, more than 60% have given up on theirs by the end of February. It’s seems that when the going gets tough, too many people just give up. It can be hard to know how long it will take to achieve your goals. Unless you are psychic, you can’t see into the future. You might find that you need to review your goal and look at ways to make it more realistic or achievable, or that you need
10
to work harder than you had realised, or maybe just differently. Whatever the reason, if you find yourself not having achieved your goal in the time frame you have set, know one thing – you have NOT failed, you simply haven’t achieved your goal YET! Follow my top five rules for achieving goals and make sure that you give yourself the very best chance of achieving yours.
Rule # 1 Write them down and read them regularly I can’t tell you enough times how important it is to write your goals down, but what is equally important is that you read over your goal list regularly. At least every morning and night. You want to make working towards those goals seem like the most natural thing in the world to you and the best way to do that is to make them a part of your world.
Rule # 2 Don’t share your goals with anyone and everyone It can be really exciting when you start experiencing the power of goal setting and you can find yourself wanting to tell the world. Don’t! Keep your goals close to your

Choose two or three people you know you can count on to provide you with unconditional support, and share your goals with them. You don’t want to give people the opportunity to inadvertently or unintentionally undermine your goals or your progress because of their own limiting beliefs.
Rule # 3 The rule of threes It’s important not to try to work on too many of your goals all at once. Although you might have many goals within your overall focus, it’s most effective if at any one time you limit yourself to working towards just three goals in continued overleaf...

New Years Resolution #1 - achieve your goals! - continued... each category; three short term, three medium and three long term goals. As you achieve your goals in each category you can begin to incorporate other goals into your schedule.
Rule # 4 Review your progress As you work towards achieving your goals, it’s important that you keep track of your progress. Not only will this help you to acknowledge how far you have come, but it will also help you to learn from your own experience.
Rule # 5 Celebrate your success It’s a cliché, but life is a journey, not a destination, so it’s important that you remember to celebrate each small goal that you achieve along the way to your longterm goals. The more you celebrate your success, the more you will feel successful, the more you will become successful – so get celebrating!

Give your child the power By Elaine Seager
Is there a budding Harry Potter living in your house? If so, this could be the opportunity of a lifetime since Sam Powers, a world class magician will soon be looking for an apprentice. If you’re wondering about his credentials then check this out: Sam was first spellbound by magic at the age of 3 and since then turned professional at the age of 14 and went on to win the title of Magician of the Year 5 times, be nominated for Entertainer of the Year twice and to be the youngest ever President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. For a 28 year old he has already had an amazing career and one lucky person will soon get the opportunity to learn some magic from him and perform in his show by listening to Hot FM between 9-20 January. Sam has been amazing audiences with his show ‘Xtreme Illusions’ at the Reef Hotel Casino since October. This is world class family entertainment and has been described as ‘magic Las Vegas style’ with its mixture of music, dance and showgirls. Lucky for us, Sam Powers has taken a gamble on Cairns. He has brought his show here for an extended season to entertain the tourists, but more importantly, this also gives Cairns locals an opportunity to see a showman who’s used to entertaining Hollywood stars (he performed at James Packer’s wedding and one of Elton John’s Oscars party’s) and appearing on TV in front of millions of viewers. So why should you take the kids to see Xtreme Illusions? There’s no doubt that this a very entertaining show and it’s short and slick enough to literally keep the kids spellbound from beginning to end. And, Sam Powers is a great role model for children. He is young, dynamic and spunky and if ever there was a case study for being successful by embracing
www.pakmag.com.au
your unique skills and passion, then Sam is it. This is a man who could have done anything and as a straight A student he considered becoming a vet (he’s a real animal lover) or doctor. But he also wanted to be different and soon fell for the joy of affecting an audience with illusions. You don’t need to spend long with Sam to see why he’s so successful: he clearly loves his work but is also very driven and focused. On top of that he is persistent enough to spend up to 10 years perfecting a trick before the public get to see it. Sam has also done his time as a children’s entertainer so he knows what kids love to see and has created a show that appeals to the whole family. Given his vivid memories of the thrill of seeing his own first magic show as a child, he is particularly keen to enthral the kids and makes himself available for a meet & greet after the show to sign posters etc. Kids will especially love his opening tricks involving his treasured white doves and if after this they decide to become budding magicians Sam has created a DVD for $20 which shows them how to do 10 very simple magic tricks at home using easily available household items. Xtreme Illusions is appearing at Velvet Underground at the Reef Hotel Casino Mon-Sat 7.30-8.30pm. Family tickets are available at $129 for 2 adults and 2 children. Ask about the local’s discount to receive a further 10% off your ticket price.
TO WIN A COPY OF SAM’S DVD
(only available to PakMag readers) and a Family Pass to his show Xtreme Illusions: send us an email to info@pakmag.com.au telling us about your child’s best disappearing act.

Detoxing:
Your springboard to better health in 2009 By Matthew Calanna
Detoxing has become very fashionable over the last few years as a result of our over-eating, over-indulging and eating additives with our food. And, because we’re often too busy to always prepare home cooked meals we jump at the chance of a quick-fix solution to cleansing our bodies of all those toxins. This is particularly so after weeks of over-indulgence during the festive season when you may be feeling fatter, lethargic, tired and a whole host of other symptoms. So, if your New Year’s resolution for 2009 is to adopt a healthier lifestyle why not give your goal a kick start by adopting a detox programme. What is detoxing? Detoxing involves some kind of plan to remove toxins and allergens from the body which accumulate as a result of poor diet, drugs and various environmental factors. Whilst many natural therapy practitioners recommend detoxing it is actually a process that the body does itself on a continual basis - the lungs, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, skin and immune system all play a part in effectively removing or eliminating toxins. If we all stuck to healthy balanced diets, exercised regularly, drank lots of water and didn’t drink alcohol or caffeine our bodies would be quite capable of dealing with toxins since the liver does a pretty good job of cleansing it for us. However after a particularly hectic party season you might feel as though your body would appreciate some assistance.
Effective detoxing is best achieved by consulting a health practitioner and will usually involve avoiding environmental toxins, restoring normal digestive function & supporting the liver’s detoxing capacity. This includes eating a good healthy balanced diet, including lots of raw fruit and veggies (preferably organic) and drinking lots of purified water. There are also some specific foods that are particularly helpful with detoxing: Vital Greens, Spirulina, Barley Grass, Carrot, Beetroot, Celery, Garlic, Onion, Brown Rice, Flaxseed Oil, Lemon and Grated Apple. Absolute no-no’s during a detox are coffee, alcohol, food in boxes or packets, processed or refined foods, salt, colours & preservatives and problem, allergenic or sensitivity causing foods such as animal fats, saturated fats, red meats, sugar, glucose and refined carbs (white flour, unbleached flour) Even though all the marketing around detox diets gives the impression that you can just do a quick detox to eliminate all the bad stuff inside your body and then just go on as normal, the process of detoxing the body actually requires a lifestyle change and is part of an ongoing process. Basically a ‘detox” is a stop sign to our brain – an opportunity to evaluate where we are and how we can help our body to stay healthy. Matthew Calanna is General Manager and a qualified pharmacist at Calanna Pharmacy.

Low to no food additives. By Corinne Snowman (Mum-on-a-Mission)
Eliminating or minimising the additives in our family’s diet can be a time consuming task and quite daunting. And, it’s made all the more difficult by clever marketing and advertising tactics which are used to make us believe we are purchasing natural and safe products when in actual fact we may not be. There’s also a loophole in the regulations which means that if an ingredient makes up less than 5% of the product it doesn’t have to be declared on the label.
4. Chips – Try Kettle plain potato chips and avoid buying flavoured chips (those flavours are all artificial!). Salt & Vinegar chips can be made easily by sprinkling a small amount of vinegar and sea salt over Vitastic pita bread and baking quickly in the oven.
However there are some brands on the market which contain less additives and are therefore a safer choice. Here are some examples:
6. Pizza Bases – it’s very hard to find pizza bases without nasty additives so try making your own with White Wings Organic flour – cheaper too!
1. Bread – look for brands that don’t contain 282 such as Mighty Soft and Noble Rise. Brumby’s also advertise the fact that their bread is free of 282.
Many food colourings have been linked to hyperactivity in children. These include colourings such as 151, 129, 142, 133 and many more. The Natural Confectionery Company market their products as containing no artificial colours or flavours, however like any sweets, they are still high in sugar.
2. Cheese slices – avoid brands containing 160b such as Coon Tasty Cheese or Mainland Tasty. Millel Parmesan and Perfect Italiano are OK too. 3. Mayonnaise - Additive 320, which is derived from petroleum, is used as an antioxidant in many products and a well known brand of mayo uses it. Better brands to try are S&W Whole Egg Mayo, Sunflower Organic Mayonnaise or Norganic Soya Mayonnaise.
5. Butter/Margarine – try Mainland which doesn’t use additives to make their product spreadable.
There’s a neat little book called ‘Low to No Additives’ which analyses a number of supermarket product labels and provides a list of products that makes it easier to make better choices. It’s got delicious recipes too and well worth a read. For more information on food additives and how to eliminate them from your diet, call Corinne on 0407 996 726.

Pregnancy:
Weathering the storm ahead By Dr. Allen Bonilla DC (USA) As the storm season approaches we are warned that preparation is key. The Cairns Post did a lovely job in their recent Cyclone Survival Guide reminding us that when nature presents us with drastic conditions it’s always better to be prepared ahead of time.
For over a third of women the pain is reported as significant enough to interfere with their daily activities. For some the pain is debilitating. One study found that of women suffering low back pain during pregnancy, 19% had refrained from a second pregnancy out of fear of low back pain!
There is another time in life when nature presents a set of circumstances in which preparation can make all the difference in the world. This is during pregnancy. During a woman’s journey through pregnancy, her body will undergo many changes. On average, a woman can expect to gain 10-14 kilos - most of it centred low in the abdomen. The hormones oestrogen and relaxin relax the connective tissue and ligaments of the pelvis allowing for impending birth. Not to mention the birth process itself which many women list as ‘trauma’ on medical intake forms.
Just as a leaky roof should be fixed before the impending storm, looking after the health of your spine and pelvis is best not left till last. Of women reporting back pain during pregnancy, only a minority reported that their condition started during pregnancy. In other words, the pain of pregnancy is most often an exacerbation of a pre-existing spine or pelvis problem!
Although these changes allow for the miracle of birth, they do have consequences. Chief among these is low back pain. Approximately 50-80% of women will experience low back pain during their pregnancy. This can present quite a challenge to a woman at a time when even normal activities such as sleeping or getting out of a chair can be difficult. A very high percentage of women also continue to have or develop low back pain after pregnancy.
www.pakmag.com.au
Although common ‘treatments’ such as bed rest, exercise and stretching can sometimes help with pain levels, they ignore the underlying causes of pain and thus leave mother and baby vulnerable to the harmful effects of spinal misalignment and nerve irritation. Chiropractic care - long recognised as safe for mothers and babies - is focused upon finding and resolving the factors responsible for pain. It’s like the difference between tarping your roof and fixing it. We all know now’s the time to get cyclone prepared. And whether you’re days away from the big event or whether it’s still just a twinkle in your eye, now may be the time to get prepared.

Hawaiian Stacks & Chocolate Stuffed Banana Hawaiian Stacks
With summer in full swing, cooking outside on the barbie is a must. These recipes aren’t just easy and delicious, but they’re minimum fuss with practically no clean-up!
• Ham (leftover Christmas ham ideal, ham steaks fine too)
Preparation and cooking:

Slice bananas lengthwise, about ¾ of the way through (don’t cut bottom skin.)
• Snickers bar (or any chocolate bar) or Nutella • Brown sugar
Slice chocolate bar lengthwise and jam into banana, or fill banana with nutella. Sprinkle brown sugar into the top of the cut.
Accompaniments
Wrap banana tightly in aluminium foil. Bananas are done!

www.pakmag.com.au
Put Stacks and Bananas on the barbie and cook over low heat with cover closed. Take out Stacks after about 5 minutes and eat with salad & crusty bread. Leave Bananas on about 15 minutes more, then turn off barbie. Serve with ice cream or custard when main meal is finished.

did you know? The soft sand that we sink into on the beach, is actually rock. Sand is what a rock becomes after years of being worn down by rivers. Years of sea waves crashing against hug e rocks and cliffs makes rocks break into sma ll particles. And ultimately, they end up as sand. The colours of sand -- yellow, red, grey, black -depend on the kind of rock it comes from. Sometim es, desert sand is carried by winds across great distances, to seasides, increasing the amount of sand in the sea. The light reaching us now from our nearest star, set off over four years ago. At presen t rocket speeds it would probably take thousands of years to get to the nearest star and back. About 2,500 million people, half the world’s population, use wood for cooking and heating. The first animals tamed and kept for milk and meat were goats and sheep. Bones of these animals have been found with human rem ains in Iraq and Iran dating back to 8,500 BC.

BULLETIN #13 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.
FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS! Bulletin: Part XiII
Last Edition: After a bolt of lightning and a large whirl wind had appeared behind the big shed, the Boppers began to worry. “I don’t like the look of this Bree.” announced Eleese. “Neither do I, Eleese, neither do I.” replied Bree. With that, all three Boppers jumped the front gate and ventured along the long driveway leading directly to the big old farm shed. Were the Boppers walking into a trap or was their something even more sinister at work here. Only time would tell! “Will this road ever end?” Trent sighed, panting heavily, “It seems like we have been walking for hours and the farm is still so far away!” Bree was beginning to wonder too, ‘we have been walking for a long time and the shed doesn’t seem to be getting any closer’. All of a sudden, a large grey figure with HUGE eyes appeared in front of them.
are here to see Farmer Jim!” stated Bree, not one to back down easily. “You are trespassing and if you proceed along this path THERE WILL BE TROUBLE!” Not sure what to do, the Boppers huddled and whispered to each other, making a plan. “We must move on!” whispered Bree. “I agree” stated Eleese. “But I think I left the iron on at home. I better go check.” Trent whimpered with his knees knocking together. “We are not turning back!” announced Bree, staring directly at the large ghostly eyes. “FINE!” replied the figure and vanished as quickly as it had appeared. Ignoring the ghostly figures warnings and Trent’s cowardly remarks, the Boppers pressed on. Bree had only taken about 10 steps when without warning; all three Boppers were magically transported to a large glass chamber within the farm shed that they had been travelling to. “What happened? Where are we? How did we get here?” questioned Eleese, looking very confused. TAP TAP TAP! All three boppers looked over to see Crazy Farmer Jim’s face pressed firm against the glass enclosure. He began to speak, “Hello
“STOP!” boomed the large shadowy figure. “You must not come any further along this path, OR ELSE!” All three Boppers stared at each other and then back at the large ghostly shaped figure. “What do you mean? Why must we a stop? We are the Bopstars and we
my little Bopstars! Welcome to your home sweet home, FOREVER!” To Be Continued…

Monkeys!
Monkeys are very interesting creatures and range in size from the Pygmy Marmoset, at 140 to 160 millimetres (5-6 in) long (plus tail) and 120 to 140 grams (4-5 oz) in weight, to the male Mandrill, almost 1 metre (3.3 ft) long and weighing 35 kilograms (77 lb). Some are arboreal (living in trees) while others live on the savannah which ultimately alters their diet. Some characteristics are shared among the groups; most New World monkeys have prehensile tails while Old World monkeys have non-prehensile tails or no visible tail at all. Some have trichromatic colour vision like that of humans, others are dichromats or monochromats. Although both the New and Old World monkeys, like the apes, have forward facing eyes, the faces of Old World and New World monkeys look very different, though again, each group shares some features such as the types of noses, cheeks and rumps. The many species of monkey have varied relationships with humans. Some are kept as pets, others used as model organisms in laboratories or in space missions. Some organizations such as Helping Hands have been training capuchin monkeys as monkey helpers to assist quadriplegics and other people with severe spinal cord injuries or mobility impairments. After being socialized in a human home as infants, the monkeys undergo extensive training before being placed with a quadriplegic. Tasks include: opening bottles and microwaving food.

pak babies
Bringing home another new baby Amanda Mathiot explores different ways to cope with bringing second and third babies home. Bringing home a new baby is an experience in itself, but when you already have other children it’s a whole different ball game. However, with a bit of planning and forethought you can make this transition a lot more peaceful and successful. The most important thing is to stay flexible and keep your sense of humour. These first weeks only happen once and the main objective is to stay healthy and happy so you can enjoy your precious family. As much as you can plan, each child is unique and they will react to a new sibling in many different ways and this is where your patience and understanding come into play. Staying calm whilst your 3-year old declares that ‘he didn’t want a baby sister, he asked for another brother, but now he just wants a puppy’, diffuses the situation a lot quicker. It’s important to choose your wars very carefully at the beginning because if an older child realises they can get attention from you by being naughty, they could continue this pattern. Also, don’t be surprised if your previously independent 4-year old insists on sucking his thumb again or starts displaying baby like behaviour. This is quite normal so try not to make a big deal out of it and they’ll soon get over it. Introducing the new baby to older siblings for the first time is an important meeting. Personally, I have found it best to be prepared enough so that I’m not feeding the baby when they first arrive. This enables my arms to be free so that I can give them a big, reassuring hug. Kids want to know that you are the same person you were before you left to have the baby and that your love for
www.pakmag.com.au
them hasn’t changed. It can also be a good idea to give them a new present ‘from the baby’; something small, yet meaningful like a new doll or a special book that you can read together. On the card write about how you are so proud of them and what a great big brother or sister they are going to be. When you eventually go home forget trying to be Super Mum, super wife and super cleaner. Caring for a newborn can be exhausting so put yourself first. If your partner can take time off work and help out at home, take him up on the offer. If family and friends offer support, accept their help. When your best friend wants to drop off a lasagne for dinner, say yes, one day you will be able to repay the favour. If your older children are already in daycare, keep them in daycare without feeling guilty about being home all day with the baby. As far as housework is concerned, turn a blind eye. As long as the basics are being done, your baby and other children won’t mind if a bit of dust is collecting on the ornaments, but they will notice a stressed out and overworked Mum. Tiredness and babies go hand in hand, but when you have another child to look after it is a lot harder to have catch-up sleeps. The old adage “sleep when baby sleeps” doesn’t really work with subsequent babies but it is still possible to get some well deserved rest. One technique that I have used is to lay down when I’m feeding the baby and read a book with my toddler at the same time. It’s enough quiet time to recharge my weary batteries and it’s also giving the other children quality continued overleaf... 35
pak babies Bringing home another new baby - continued... time with me that they need. Sometimes if the planets are aligned correctly all the children will fall asleep at the same time. When this happens, make sure you use this time to nod off and resist the temptation to get up and do some washing. Household chores will still be there tomorrow, these early days will not. If you have school aged children and you’re worried about their routines with school while you’re away recovering in hospital, write a diary for their carer about upcoming appointments or notes about their sport. It’s easier to do this whilst you’re pregnant and in a clearer state of mind rather then trying to explain it all after baby is born. Freezing school lunches into portions will also make life easier for the carer and
keeps the normality happening at home. It is vital to look after yourself in the first months after giving birth so be kind to yourself and take time out to do things that you enjoy. Obviously you won’t be enjoying cocktails by the beach, but a relaxing bubble bath reading your favourite magazine is a start. Even if you only get through a page and a half before a little person realises that you have disappeared for thirty seconds, at least you’re still remembering yourself.
Obviously you won’t be enjoying cocktails by the beach, but a relaxing bubble bath reading your favourite magazine is a start.
Don’t let bringing another baby home be daunting….embrace it for what it is…a beautiful and once in a lifetime experience.
The Bopstar Baby! The anticipation and excitement which comes with an expectant baby is unbelievable. The picking of room colours, the different toys available; the list goes on. However, there are other, much more important aspects of this new addition to the family. What do we call it? I say 'it' because Bree and I have decided not to find out the sex of the baby, doubling the amount of work needed when it comes to naming the baby. It is strange how couples see the differences in each other when they get to this stage of their lives. I have said some names to Bree and she has then looked at me as if I just told her that her puppy was run over. I have also given Bree some very disturbing looks when she has proposed a few of the names she likes. But in the end, we will have to come to an agreement or our baby will get very confused being called two different names.
The Top 5 Most Popular Baby Names in 2008 were:
Girls:
Mia Chloe Isabella Emily Olivia
BOYS:
Jack William Lachlan Joshua Cooper

Keep Smiling by 1300 SMILES
Babies begin to get their first teeth at 6 months and by the time they reach 3 they will have 20 milk teeth. It is essential that these primary teeth are well cared for, since decay in these teeth can often result in adult/permanent teeth being affected with disease.
Caring for Milk Teeth As soon as a tooth appears it should be cleaned daily in order to remove plaque, a sticky, almost invisible bacterial film which grows on teeth. This will lead to tooth decay and gum disease if it’s not effectively removed on a regular basis.
Eating for Healthy Teeth Diet also affects dental health and the emphasis should be on fresh healthy food with minimal sugar and additives. Cordials, fruit juices, soft drinks and sports drinks should also be limited in favour of water. It’s also important to limit the number of times they eat and drink throughout the day so that the mouth’s natural defence mechanism has time to work. Young children should be weaned to a normal cup as soon as possible rather than continuing with a continued use of a bottle or sipper cup.
Children should brush their teeth twice a day with a small, soft toothbrush using gentle circular scrubbing or jiggling motions. Ideally Mum or Dad should brush their teeth for them at least once a day until they are about 8-9 years old but they should also be encouraged to practice their own brushing. Mimicking Mum and Dad at home is a great way of getting them started. Night time brushing is especially important and should be done after their last meal and drink.
Dental checks It’s important for children to start dental visits early. Take them to a dental therapist who is trained specifically to deal with children in a fun, relaxed and anxiety free environment and ask questions about the best way to handle their first visit. Remember these dental therapists have special techniques and ways of explaining procedures to children, without too much fuss. They will also be able to advise about other issues such as thumb sucking, orthodontic development, dental sealants, fluoride protection, mouth guards and much more.
Children under the age of two years should NOT use toothpaste, and then from 2-6 years use a pea sized amount of LOW fluoride toothpaste, as kids will often swallow the toothpaste rather than spitting it out.
For more information or to make an appointment with the dental therapist at either the Cairns Central or Smithfield practice, please call 1300SMILES or visit the web site at www.1300SMILES.com.au.

Leap of Faith
Roseanne de Gregorio bravely ventures in to the unknown world of stem cell therapy to find help for her son with Celebral Palsy Corey was born on the 10 August 2005 at only 28 weeks gestation, he was our second child. As the months passed Corey started to miss his developmental milestones. We just assumed this was due to his being premature but our fears soon mounted when, at eight months old, a physiotherapist started mentioning the words Cerebral Palsy. Immediately our dreams for our son started dissolving and in their place an insurmountable mountain of worries and fears for his future. It was constantly on our minds and after months of crying, depression and frustration in coming to terms with his diagnosis we slowly started to crawl back to confront the reality of our situation. We then started to look for ways to ensure that Corey would have every opportunity to receive the help, support and stimulation he would need to reach his best possible quality of life. In March this year my sister phoned me to tell me of a story she had seen on the news the night before, about a three year old with cerebral palsy in the U.S who had been undergoing experimental stem cell therapy with amazing results. We tried to find the news story on the internet and after googling “Stem Cell Therapy a whole new medical world opened up to us. Stem Cell Therapy was being used in China for many sorts of disabilities, disorders and diseases and apparently 86% of patients had improvements following the procedure. We decided to take a huge leap of faith and booked flights to China for Corey and his Dad (I was heavily pregnant with our third child at the time). We knew this wasn’t a cure and there were no guarantees but we wanted to give our son every best possible chance of improving his condition. In the lead up to their departure our anxieties, fears and concerns
38
increased. We were obviously very frightened about sending him to a foreign country and allowing strange doctors and nurses perform experimental medical procedures on our beloved little boy but unfortunately we felt we had no choice since stem cell therapy is only in experimental stages in Australia. Corey received 6 treatments over 5 weeks in China and during that time I lay awake at night worrying about not being with him to hold his hand and give him kisses and hugs or wipe away his tears when he needed me. The treatments were done in a private hospital in the city of Qingdao where Corey and his Daddy were provided with their own room. He received one stem cell treatment every 5 days, either by intravenous or lumber puncture, with sessions of physio, acupuncture and electro wave therapy on the other 4 days. They also occasionally had free days when they left the confines of the hospital and did some sight-seeing. They met many other families at the hospital from all over the world, some with children and some as adults seeking the treatment. Corey and his Dad finally returned home in September. Since then we have seen some small improvements in him but we were told by the doctors that the stem cells need at least 90 days to differentiate (take on the job of the damaged cells). So, for now, we must be patient and wait and see.

Let’s swap! Need a change of scenery but don’t want to spend a fortune? Elaine Seager discovers how house-swapping is a great way for families to holiday without breaking the bank. Having a regular weekend away may not be a reality for many families, unless you’re going camping, but have you ever thought about utilising your greatest asset – your home. House-swapping is a new trend made famous by the recent movie ‘The Holiday’ starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz and with our impending economic woes it could be the future of holidaying.
What’s it all about? House swapping involves swapping your house with a complete stranger for the purpose of a holiday. Thanks to the internet this has now been made very easy to do and now there are several house-swapping websites including one which caters just for the Australian and New Zealand markets. So, if you fancy a weekend in a capital city or just in a different part of the country, all you need to do is register on www.aussiehouseswap.co.au and, for $65 a year, you’ll have access to a more or less free holiday in one of over 1000 houses, cottages, cabins and farmhouses around the country. Of course, if you want to, you can go for longer. House-swapping has many advantages but especially so for families. The most obvious being the money you will save; not only on accommodation costs but also the money you save from self-catering, potentially not having to hire a car (if the car is part of the agreement) and free laundry. So, either you get a much cheaper holiday or you have more pocket money to spend on taking the kids on trips to visit the local attractions.
40
There’s also the comfort and space of living in a house instead of being cooped up in a hotel room or apartment. This is particularly good if it’s raining. And, there’s the convenience of not having to pack the every single toy the kids own because if you swap with another family, all the toys, books, DVD’S etc are already there (apart from the inevitable favourites which you’ll still need to take). If you’ve got a young family it’s even possible to tie up with another young family so that you can use their cot, high chair, prams and strollers.
House Swapping in FNQ There are currently about 50 properties registered on www.aussiehouseswap.com.au that are in and around the Cairns area and, since Cairns is obviously a popular tourist destination there have been many members choosing this area as a preferred destination from all over Australia and New Zealand. According to www.aussiehouseswap.com. au those who have house swapped with someone from Cairns have generally also car swapped. If you’re planning on travelling further afield, Americans and Canadians are the most enthusiastic house swappers since they’ve been doing it a lot longer than anyone else, but the international websites have listings all around the world. Lorna Hempstead, a keen house-swapper from Magnetic Island, has swapped several times with people in Sydney as well as travelling further afield to swap in Europe. She says that house swapping is made extremely easy to do by the internet but that you have to be proactive if you want
www.pakmag.com.au
to make it work. And, expect that sometimes people don’t respond to your enquiries because they forget they’re still registered. And, if you’re assuming most swappers will want to come here in the winter months think again, just because we don’t think this is the best time of year to visit FNQ because of the weather, people in Tasmania are often quite happy to come and sweat it out for something different. Looking at some of the properties on these house swap sites could be a little intimidating if you think your house isn’t quite up to the luxury that some people have on offer. However, most swappers apparently make their choice based on location and how many people they need to sleep rather than relative levels of comfort. So, you could end up discovering what it’s like to live in the lap of luxury whilst a CEO is putting your bins out at home! House swapping has many advantages. The financial savings and convenience make it a very attractive option for families and most swappers mention that the best part is being able to experience another area as a local rather than a tourist.
“House swapping involves swapping your house with a complete stranger for the purpose of a holiday”
Tips for House-Swapping Hosts: • Make space in wardrobes and bathrooms for your house-swappers • Pack away valuable items • Provide clean sheets and towels • Leave very clear and detailed instructions on how to work appliances etc in the house • Leave a detailed pack of local information – leave all of your tips and locals secrets about your area. • Ask local family or friends to check in on your guest • You don’t need to completely depersonalise your home – your guests want to enjoy homely comforts • Tell your insurance company
Good House Swapping Sites www.aussiehouseswap.com.au www.homeexchange.com www.homesforexchange.com
Tips for House-Swapping Guests: • Be careful and treat the house with the respect you would want them to treat yours • Replace anything you use in your host’s house – if something big breaks let your host know immediately. • Stick to the agreed rules ie. don’t go in to rooms that your hosts have asked to be off-limits • Make sure you leave a gift and thank you note when you leave
• Appoint a local friend or family member as a contact point should anything go wrong • Agree who’s paying what for bills before swapping

a trip to...
Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway is an exciting new attraction that offers families a unique rainforest experience. An easy 90 minute drive from Cairns, Mamu is located halfway between Innisfail and Millaa Millaa in the cooler air of the Cairns Highlands, so, if you’re looking for a way to escape the heat on the coast during the school holidays why not come and explore this pristine rainforest from the ground all the way up to the canopy. Mamu has more than 1100 metres of walking tracks (suitable for wheelchairs and prams) meandering through the rainforest and every turn in the path offers surprises. Getting up close and personal with the rainforest allows you to spot plank-like buttress roots, a forest floor adorned with sprinklings of colourful fallen fruits and an astounding variety of fungi. Part of the walkway includes a cantilever (short elevated walkway) which hangs out over the forest and brings you to the brink of the North Johnstone River gorge. From here you have stunning uninterrupted views of the river snaking through the valley 100m below and the flat-topped hills and deep valleys of the Atherton Tableland. The elevated walkway meanders for 350m through the rainforest, about 15m above the ground. This galvanised steel structure with recycled plastic decking brings you up close to the plants
42
and animals of the rainforest. You will be able to see at close range the fruit ripening on the trees, brilliant flowers and nectar-feeding birds, tiny animals such as caterpillars and beetles and an amazing diversity of creepers, vines and ferns in the rainforest. The kids will also love climbing the 37m high Observation Tower. The climb will be worth it and after only 100 steps, you will be high above the canopy on our top viewing deck with wide-ranging views over pristine rainforest and the rugged Bellenden Ker range. From here you can also watch the river gurgling through the valley far below and flocks of topknot pigeons flying overhead. The Mamu Walkway is just off the Palmerston Highway, 27km from the turnoff from the Bruce Highway and located within Wooroonooran National Park. It is only a few kilometres from other walking tracks, waterfalls and picnic areas so why not bring a picnic and make a day of it? Drive times: from Cairns – 90 minutes; from Innisfail – 30 minutes; from Millaa Millaa – 20 minutes and from Atherton - 50 minutes. pet tips & hints
with Darlene Stewart
Is your home causing your pets health problems? Does your pooch suffer from skin irritations, sore eyes and sneezing? If so, then read on because this might just interest you.
assume that any product with lingering smells and fumes is not good to be around your pooch (or probably the kids for that matter!)
We all love a clean, nice smelling home but did you ever stop to think about how household cleaning products might be affecting our furry friends? Dogs love to explore their environment and discover new things and in the process of doing this their noses are close to the ground and often in contact with cleaning chemicals. Unfortunately they don’t realise what is and isn’t good for them and so it’s up to us to use pooch friendly products that won’t cause them harm.
Outside in the garden there are lots of other potential dangers too – watch out for mulch, fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides. The reason these pose a danger is because dogs and cats like to lie in the dirt in the shade and when they get up from slumbering they will often have a scratch or a lick. So, whilst grooming themselves they can be absorbing toxins too.
A large number of household cleaning products are toxic to dogs and should be kept well away from them. Most labels say ‘dangerous’ or ‘avoid the eyes’ but in many cases inhalation is all that’s needed to cause harm. In particular the chemicals in household cleaners which are a problem are ammonia, phenols or cresol which can irritate the skin, lungs and eyes. Air fresheners can also be potentially harmful because they contain chemicals which in some cases can affect the nervous system. Another product to watch out for is furniture and floor polishes since most contain phenol, a major cause of skin irritation. If you’re not one for reading labels you can
So what should you do to create a safer environment for your pets to live in? Using natural environmentally friendly products is a first step. You could try using bicarb and vinegar to clean up unwanted furry friends mess. Blot the mess with a paper towel, sprinkle on the bicarb, spray with vinegar, scrub with a brush and then leave to dry then. Finish off by vacuuming. Diluted vinegar is a great all-round cleaner (one part vinegar to 2 parts water) and vinegar and bicarb together are good for removing stains and greasy spots. So, why not try going natural and see if your pet’s health improves. Good luck with your spring cleaning!

Canvas Painting
– It’s messy but fun and if you’re organized enough you may end up with a masterpiece to hang on your wall! By Amanda Mathiot
Getting the paints out is always a great way to keep the kids amused during holiday time and it’s great for kids of all ages. If you’ve got more than one child try this approach so that you get all of their creative expressions on one piece of art. The trick is to use colours from the same hues so there’s some synergy. It’s a lovely memento of a young child’s drawing and they look fantastic. To begin all you need is the following: • A canvas of your desired size. We used a 30cm x 60cm. • Variety of paint brushes: different sizes/textures etc.. • Choice of paints (make sure it is washable and non toxic) • A ruler • A lead pencil • Other decorating items, glitter, pencils • Jar of water to wash brushes • No spill pots or just an old lid/bowl for holding and mixing paints Step 1: Find a suitable area that is comfortable. A toddlers table is great or if a baby is painting, down on the floor protected with a drop sheet (which can be an old sheet), newspaper or a piece of plastic. Now get ready to get messy and let those creative juices flow. Step 2: Using your lead pencil and ruler divide your canvas into equal portions in ratio to how many children are painting on the canvas ie: I had 3 kids doing this project so I drew a light (but still visible to kids) line every 20cm down. This is to give a faint border for each child to paint in, but at the end it all becomes one picture. Step 3: Paint, Paint and Paint some more! You can choose to let one child paint in their area one at a time or altogether. It’s a personal choice and it doesn’t really matter. I let my baby go first, then the older two did theirs together. Try to encourage the children to stay within their areas, but be warned once those creative vibes kick in anything can happen. Step 4: Add some glitter or any other finishing touches that your child would like to add. Step 5: Let it dry Step 6: Sit back and enjoy the finished work of art and decide where to hang it!

Fair go for fair trade By Elaine Seager
Kris Holland knows exactly how important the fair trade movement is. As a young mother she lived in various parts of Asia for 15 years teaching literacy skills to the locals and working on health aid projects. This experience brought her face to face with Third World poverty and how these local communities were being marginalised and kept in poverty by the global trading system. Kris is now a grandmother and since being back in Australia has maintained close connections with Asia. Her desire to help those people she met and her passion for Asian culture has been the inspiration behind her new store in Edge Hill which provides a market for the unique handicrafts and products produced by certified fair trade organisations and many of the craftspeople she personally knows. What is fair trade all about? When the fair trade movement really began to take shape in the 1960’s it’s slogan at the time was “Trade Not Aid’. The idea behind it is to help developing countries by helping them to sell their products rather than just sending them money through charities. Now, more than ever, the world is connected through global trade. Every day we buy and use products from all around the world but as the Fair Trade Association says: “Unfortunately unfair trade rules have been widely recognized as one of the major contributors to global poverty…if the poorest nations in South America, Africa and Asia, were able to increase their share in global trade by just 1%, the income generated could lift 128 million people out of poverty”. Unfair Trade The fact that a fair trade movement even exists presupposes that most trade going on must be unfair. The stories most often heard about with regards to fair trade are about coffee and tea producers. The world markets for crops like these are dominated by a handful
48
of buyers representing big multi-national companies who can control market prices because of their concentration of power. Growers have little leverage for negotiation and are given a ‘take it or leave’ ultimatum whether or not it’s a ‘fair’price. How can you tell if it’s fair trade? Fair trade producers must meet certain standards in terms of how their workers are treated in order to gain a certification which allows them to label their products as a fair trade product. This enables you, as the consumer, to be sure that the product you’re buying has been manufactured under ethical conditions and that the person who grew or made it is being paid a fair price. In other words, that person wasn’t paid peanuts for working 20 hours a day in a sweat shop. Not just Ethical Whilst the main philosophy behind Ethos is to offer fair trade products there are lots of other reasons to check it out especially if you’re looking for something a little bit different for the kids. There are some great gift ideas and all of them uniquely handcrafted with natural materials – a welcome relief from all the usual mass-produced plastic stuff we see in shops. Each product also has a story to tell and Kris does her best to make sure each customer knows exactly what they’re buying and who made it. For example, one of the craftspeople who works for Yakkum Craft in Indonesia has two disabilities and would normally be dependent on his family but he has been trained in leather craft and is bow works to support himself. Kris sources her products from a variety of fair trade organisations around the world as well as Oxfam who supply fair trade tea, coffee and chocolate from Green Field plantations which are managed under fair trade policies. ETHOS is located on Collins Street in Edge Hill.

eating out
Family Friendly vs. Kid Savvy By Brendan John
Lots of restaurants around town call themselves family friendly but it’s a term that’s open to interpretation. More often than not it’s a term used to let you know that they don’t mind you bringing the kids along. It doesn’t necessarily mean they actively welcome your kids being there or that they understand how to serve you. Let’s make some distinctions. Some restaurants exist solely to serve families and are very child-oriented. Unfortunately they may not be the kind of place adults would ordinarily choose to go to eat. Then there’s a whole lot of restaurants who don’t specifically target families but who also don’t want to turn away your business. They tend to call themselves ‘family friendly’. Some are surprisingly good even though you’d think kids weren’t welcome, others are more like a comedy routine with backpacker waiters having no clue how to serve you. So, family friendly does not necessarily mean ‘kid-savvy’. the ticking time-bomb When you eat out with the kids you are subject to a ticking time-bomb. At some point your kids will go feral and you’ll need to leave really quickly but there’s no way of knowing when this will happen. However, with a bit of planning you could make it all the way through to pudding. Here’s how: Minimise drive time Given the ticking time-bomb choose restaurants that are close by and easy to get to. Choose a good restaurant If you’re going to bother with the effort and expense of eating out with the kids you may as well make sure it’s a good restaurant where you are actually going to enjoy eating the food.
50
go early Kids like to eat early anyway but going early also means the restaurant will be emptier which means less disturbance to other diners, more attention from the waiters and quicker turnaround of food. Order quickly It’s easy to get carried away having pre-dinner chats and admiring the views but your most important job when you arrive is to order food for the kids immediately. Do not let the waiter leave until you have placed an order since the sooner they have food in front of them the sooner you can relax. kids Menus In Cairns this usually means fish and chips, chicken nuggets or spaghetti bolognaise. In the interests of expanding your kids horizons, don’t bother looking at it and just adapt something off the main menu. This is made much easier if you go to a small restaurant where they value customer loyalty so they are more willing to adapt and specially prepare food for you. It is also easier if the restaurant has lots of small dishes on the menu. Pay asap Once dinner is finished you will not be hanging around for long so avoid lengthy waits for the bill by asking for it as soon as the last dish arrives. Parents don’t stop wanting to eat good food just because they have kids so there must be a great market for adult restaurants who are kid-savvy. All it takes is making note of these tips and putting a small toy box in the corner. Happy Eating!

time for a break Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly towards a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologise. ”Please allow me to help I’m a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you’d allow me”. ”No, I’ll be all right. I’ll be fine in a few minutes,” he replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands together at his groin. At her persistence however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, ”How does that feel?” He replied: ‘It feels great, but I still think my thumb’s broken”.

KIDS Sudoku answers - December issue
A little old lady bought a pair of parrots but cannot identify their gender. So she called the shop and the man there advises her to watch them carefully and all would become clear in time. She spends weeks staring at the cage and eventually catches them doing what comes naturally. To make sure she doesn’t get them mixed up again, she cuts out a ring from a piece of cardboard and puts it round the male parrot’s neck. A while later, the local priest visits the old lady. The male parrot takes one look at the father’s collar, wolf whistles, and says, “I see she caught you at it too.”

David received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an obscenity. David tried hard to change the bird’s attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything he could think of. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird yelled back. He shocked the bird and the bird got more rude. Finally he put the bird in the freezer, He heard the bird squawk and kick and screamthen suddenly, there was quiet. David was frightened that he might have hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’ll endeavor at once to correct my behavior. I really am truly sorry and beg your forgiveness. David was astonished at the bird’s change in attitude and was about to ask what had made such a dramatic change when the parrot continued, May I ask what did the chicken do?
Almost silently, so as not to scare the fish, Bob says, ‘I think I’m gonna divorce my wife. She hasn’t spoken to me in over 2 months.’ Earl continues slowly sipping his beer, then thoughtfully says, ‘You better think it over, Bob.’ ‘Women like that are hard to find.’ www.pakmag.com.au
