I can’t believe it. I’m about to experience my very first mother’s day. As I write this, in a hurry of course as these days I have about 2 minutes before Jordan decides he is either bored, hungry or tired and needs my immediate attention, I reminisce about the mothers days my mum experienced. Cold burnt toast for breakfast, newspaper wrapped gifts containing $2 jewellery and a hand made card with drawings of what was meant to be family members at the beach. I of course have a few years to wait for this wonderful experience with Jordan, but I will be thinking of all you mums getting gifts from the heart off your children. Mine will be a few cheeky giggles, some smiles to die for and I am certain a new exciting sound or movement that excites him as much as us. We are trying to capture every moment we can, lucky for us Anya from Cheeky Monkey Photography has taken some wonderful photographs of Jordan at 3 weeks of age that we already look at and wonder where the time has gone, he is so big already. So enjoy some quality time with your kids, before you know it they are making you grandparents!

Daddy Diary #1 Hello out there in PakMag-land. My name’s Potts, one half of the SEAFM Morning Crew and for those who don’t know me, I’m an FTFE (First Time Father Expecting). Of course, my beautiful wife Kylie is actually expecting although I am experiencing some typical pregnancy symptoms like weight gain and cravings. Given my experiences Bree asked me if I would like to write an article each month about my impending fatherhood. After a quick bout of stomach cramps, morning sickness, swollen feet and night sweats, all within 30 minutes of Bree asking me, I decided to say yes. Kylie is now at the 25 week mark and it’s already been quite an experience. From the initial excitement of finding out we’re pregnant, the hormonal arguments where I couldn’t blink without getting in trouble, through to the 20 week scan where we saw a 3D picture of a little alien. I presume that was meant to be my child?! It seems the baby likes to kick around inside Mum’s stomach at the moment but only when Dad isn’t looking or feeling. I went about 3 weeks without feeling anything until one afternoon I felt something strange in the stomach – must’ve been that chicken vindaloo I had the night before. It was then that I also felt the first movements on Kylie’s stomach which felt like she was burping or getting ready to release something from behind. One of the strangest experiences for a FTFE is walking through the maternity clothing section at the shops. WOW! I really thought Kylie wouldn’t be into huge Grandma knicker’s until, well, she’s a Grandma. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of choice so she’s stuck with 3 ‘muumuu’s’ to wear around the house. One of the best designs I have ever seen is the maternity bra – what an invention. Where were those quick release bra straps when I was 17 and trying to look like I knew what I was doing around a bra? No doubt I would still have trouble getting the thing off; bra’s are best left on the floor anyway.

Starting Early, Starting Late: Reflections on Motherhood

by Bree James

As most of you know I’ve just had my first baby at the age of 28. As far as age for first time Mum’s is concerned that makes me pretty average. There are now as many babies born to women over 40 as there are to women in their teens so there is a great diversity in the age that we are choosing to start families. This is quite a shift from the 1960’s when the huge majority of Mum’s started their families in their early 20’s. So, in honour of Mother’s Day, we decided to ask some local Mum’s to share their stories and perspectives on starting motherhood either early or late in life.

Amanda Mathiot, writer for PakMag, had her first son when she was 18. Meeting and introducing people to my children is usually when it all begins. They see me standing next to my 14 year old son who is taller then me and you see them calculating in their head. Moments later the comments and ‘innocent’ questions start. “You don’t look old enough to have six children” or “you don’t look old enough to have a teenager.” Considering I look younger than my 32 years I know they are wondering if I had my eldest son when I was younger than 16. It seems because I chose to be a mother at 18 I gave society the right to ask me very personal questions and to share their opinions about my life decisions. I will never regret becoming a Young Mum. I get to share my life with six of the most amazing people in this world who have taught me so much. Society told me my life was ruined, my babies told me my life had just begun. Having children young hasn’t been easy. Financially we were behind before we even began but in other ways though it worked in our favour. We learnt to live on one wage and our children gave us a push to work hard and achieve our goals early so we could create a good life for them. Feeling judged as a young Mum, I found it hard attending play groups or ‘real life’ social events. My saviour was an internet based community for Young Australian Mums through which I met some inspiring Young Mothers. I knew that becoming a Mum would be a life changing experience, but never in my wildest dreams could I have predicted the profound effect it would have on me.

Pip Miller, local PR expert, had her first baby at the age of 28 and recently had Tilly, her fifth surprise bundle, at 41. Motherhood has been the primary focus of my life for almost 14 years. It has been a truly wonderful and evolutionary experience as you seem to change your way of thinking as you get older. Naturally, maturity and experience count for so many things and I guess, would be the overriding factor in making my latest experience such a joyous one. I never actually planned to have children and was passionate about starting my PR business so it was with great surprise that I discovered I was pregnant the first time. When Zoe was born I was star-struck. A whirlwind ensure but I managed to juggle motherhood and running a business with the help of a nanny. I had my second baby, Xavier, when I was 30 and had no further plans for any more children. However, my life took a very different turn and by my mid 30’s I had also given birth to Felix and India. Suddenly I had a family of 4 kids and life was full on. Then, just as we were starting to taste the intoxicating flavour of freedom, out of the blue…help! Another baby! The first words I uttered were: "I’m too old to have another baby!”. Being pregnant at 41 was a completely different experience to the last time. I had to have all these tests that older mothers are recommended to have. It was a rollercoaster, worrying about results and then being ecstatic on learning everything was ok. When we began telling people most were shocked, some horrified and others just elated for us. Being a mum again after seven years has just been wonderful and I have definitely enjoyed the ‘older’ mother experience. I feel we are absolutely blessed to have Tilly and we’re making every second count because she is definitely the last!

Ronelle Down found out she was pregnant with 1 year old Isabella when she was 19. The day I found out I was pregnant was one of the most memorable moments in my life. I never planned on having children so early; I always thought I would start having babies at around 25 so this pregnancy was very unexpected news for me and my boyfriend of 4 years. We did not plan it but I was very happy and knew that it was a positive change in my life. Since I found out so late in to the pregnancy it went very quickly. The birth wasn’t quite so easy; Isabella was finally born after an emergency caesarean and 19 hours of hard labour but her father Duncan and I both instantly fell in love with her. My experience as a young mum has been very positive. Isabella is a happy baby and I’m grateful to have had a lot of support from our family and friends. Duncan is also a great dad and we are delighted to be watching Isabella grow together. As a young Mum I do have to miss out on some things in life but it really it doesn’t bother me. I still do a lot of things; I just do them with my daughter. I don’t see why she should restrict us so we are still planning to travel overseas at the end of the year as a family. I am a very proud mum and even if I could, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Elaine Seager, a writer for PakMag, had Zoe when she was 40. I wasn’t one of those girls who dreamt about having babies. I wanted to go to University, see the world, climb the corporate ladder and have a good time. It wasn’t that I didn’t want children necessarily; it was just that there were so many other exciting things to do first. Having said that, giving birth to Zoe was undoubtedly the most joyous moment of my life. By my mid 30’s I had divorced the man I definitely didn’t want babies with and had met Brendan. For the first time in my life I started seriously thinking about wanting a family. Getting pregnant proved to be easy but keeping them wasn’t. After a series of miscarriages I finally got one to stick and even though my test results were good my obstetrician still recommended having an amniocentesis because of my ‘advanced age’. I decided not to risk it.

www.pakmag.com.au

Zoe arrived 2 weeks early after a good pregnancy and a very quick and easy birth. The first few months of motherhood are a bit of a blur to me now thanks to chronic sleep deprivation. To be honest it was a struggle at times and there was no doubt that younger Mum’s I met were coping much better physically than I was. On the plus side, age brings much greater emotional wisdom and a depth of knowledge about life that I didn’t have even 10 years ago. I’m excited about being able to pass this on to Zoe. My only regret about leaving it late is that Zoe will be an only child although I take comfort in the fact there are lots of other older mum’s out there also only having one child so she won’t be alone! continued overleaf... 7

Starting Early, Starting Late - continued... Vivien Williams, co-owner of Pacific Music, had her first child Matthew at the age of 20. I was married very young at the age of 18. I have always loved kids and considered myself to be quite maternal. I fell pregnant (unplanned) two years after being married. I had a brilliant pregnancy and absolutely loved it. Matthew is my first child and I had Brigit (planned) at 28. I found my second pregnancy took a greater toll on my body, even at 28, so I cannot imagine being pregnant in your late 30’s, early 40’s. I feel being a young mum is probably easier on your body, not only through pregnancy and birth, but also the sleepless nights. Patience can be an issue for any parent with young children, and I think as people age we do become less flexible and intolerant. Being young and energetic allows you to goof off with them, have water fights, chase them around the house, go skating etc. I do understand people wanting to 'live their lives' before having children, setting up a home and financially being in a better position although there’s something to be said for kids having to learn to go without because "mum and dad can't afford it" and teaching them the value of money. I have every intention of living my life after my kids have left home and still being young enough to enjoy chasing my grandchildren around the house. I never felt judged about being a young mum, I only felt those judgments about being married so young. I had a fantastic mother who was very supportive and who I could ring any time to get advice. I love being a mum and wouldn't trade it for anything. I wish the world would slow down though and allow families to be families!!

The temperature gauge is dropping and the fresh sunny days of the dry season are upon us. It’s time to get out and party as a steady flow of family friendly events and festivals around the region are heading your way. Here’s PakMag’s rundown of what’s coming up: LAURA DANCE FESTIVAL (19-21 June)

Bambi to Bimbo: How the Sisterhood is ‘Dumbing’ Down and the Affects on Our Daughters By Elaine Seager Women spent the last century fighting for equal rights and even though there may still be some inequalities, women can now pretty much achieve anything they set their mind to. Consequently women have governed many countries around the world, Australia now has a female Deputy PM and had it not been for Obama, America might also have had its first female President. As women we live in priviledged times and our daughters have all the opportunities in the world to look forward to. But far from being inspired by Julia Gillard, many of our impressionable young girls are more likely to be influenced by the likes of Britney, Paris and the Olsen twins. Children have always loved to play act and mimic adults and it’s an important part of their development process. However, whilst we used to pretend to be a mummy, doctor or teacher, today’s four-year-old girls are likely to be wearing ‘bra’lettes’ and gyrating like Madonna. These celebrities are by no means stupid but they choose to present themselves as sex objects. Unfortunately they are teaching girls to dumb down to get attention and the media reinforces it with messages that being sexy will make them popular and happy. Far from being empowered, young girls now seem more enslaved by the need to be sexy. It’s insidious but even their dolls support this message – do Barbie and Bratz dolls look like little girls or bimbos? All of this is having a profound effect with girls as young as five suffering from low self esteem. A study in South Australia among healthy weight seven-year-old girls also found that 50% wanted to be thinner. This is a disturbing figure. As Mums we know that basing your self worth on your physical attributes is the road to insanity – we all get wrinkly eventually. So, what do we do when our young girls are taken in by it all?

www.pakmag.com.au

Get Involved What girls see projected in the media is not reality. Help them to think critically about what they see eg. explain how those perfect models in magazines have spent hours in make-up and they still need airbrushing. Love Yourself The same sex parent is the most important role model in a child’s life. You heavily influence them by what you say and how you act. If you want to teach self acceptance you must have it for yourself. Respect from Dad Girls learn how to relate with men through their relationships with their father. Dad showing respect for women will enable his daughter to grow up into a self respecting, strong and confident young woman. Eye of the Beholder It’s a cliché but beauty and sexiness really are a mental attitude. Naomi Campbell is physically stunning but her angry outbursts make her an ugly woman. There are far less beautiful women in the world who are magnetically attractive – show your daughter how to be one of them. We need our young girls to grow into strong empowered women and improving their self-image will improve their self-esteem right through to adulthood. To buy dolls that look like little girls rather than Bimbo’s see our baby section on page 36 or go to www.australiangirldoll.com.au. Avoiding Babies: Is it time you reviewed your contraception? There are so many contraceptive options available these days that working your way through them can be confusing but it essentially boils down to two things: 1) how you feel about taking hormones and 2) how good you are at remembering to take a pill every day. According to Family Planning Queensland the recommendation for Mums is usually for longterm contraceptive methods like Implanon or Mirena which work even when you forget about them. The Pill is still also popular and, for those who can remember to take it properly, it’s also highly effective. At the end of the day the best contraceptive is the one that works for you, not necessarily the ‘latest and greatest’. Here’s a rundown of your options: Hormone contraceptives (all at least 97% effective and available on prescription)

1. Combined oral contraceptive (the pill) The pill contains the hormones oestrogen and progestogen, and works by preventing ovulation, thickening the mucus of the cervix so that sperm cannot enter the uterus and by changing the lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for pregnancy. There are many different brands although it’s not recommended if you’re breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding the Mini-pill (progestogen only pill) is ok but it has to be taken at the same time every day which can be tricky for Mums. 2. The contraceptive vaginal ring – NuvaRing® Nuvaring® is the brand name for the contraceptive vaginal ring that releases a small daily dose of hormones, similar to those used in the pill. Each NuvaRing® lasts for three weeks. NuvaRing® does not need to be removed prior to sexual intercourse or exercise as your vaginal muscles hold it firmly in place. 3. The contraceptive implant – Implanon® Implanon® is the brand name for the contraceptive

implant containing the hormone progestogen. It is a small flexible rod, inserted into the upper arm and remains active for up to 3 years. Implanon® works in the same way as the pill without requiring daily pill taking. 4. The progestogen-releasing intrauterine system – Mirena® Mirena® is the brand name for a small T-shaped device made of plastic that is placed inside the uterus. It releases a progestogen hormone and remains effective for up to 5 years. It works by thickening the mucus of the cervix and by changing the lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for pregnancy. Once inserted, you can’t feel a Mirena® inside you, and there is no chance of it ‘falling out’. 5. DMPA – Depo Provera®, Depo Ralovera® (Depo/the shot) Depo Provera and Depo Ralovera are the brand names of DMPA (medroxyprogesterone acetate) available in Australia. DMPA is given by injection into a muscle every 12 weeks, and slowly absorbed into the blood stream. These are becoming popular because many women will have no periods or minimal bleeding whilst using DMPA, although if you experience side effects (like headaches or mood changes) these will remain with you until the injection wears off. After using it may take a few months for your fertility to return to normal so not ideal if you want to get pregnant again quickly.

Non Hormone Contraceptives For those women who don’t feel comfortable taking hormones the choices are still pretty much the same. It ranges from sterilisation for couples who are certain they no longer want anymore children through to condoms and diaphragms. Then, there’s your natural methods, like withdrawal for those who aren’t too fussed about an ‘accident’ (some of you have probably used this method before and are now consequently reading this magazine!). Incontinence: One in 3 of you reading this are unable to always control your waterworks. Many Mum’s believe that this is normal and part of the price women pay for being mothers but fortunately this is not true. Leakage may be common but it is not normal and, more importantly, it can be cured.

So, what exactly is normal as far as your waterworks are concerned? If you answer ‘no’ to any of these questions something is not quite right:

squeeze my pelvic floor muscles

• Do you go to the toilet 4-6 times each day only? • Do you sleep through or get up only once during the night? • Do you pass 300-400ml each time? (1 coffee cup = 250ml) • Do you have dry pants all the time? • Do you pass water easily, without straining on stopping and starting? During pregnancy about 65% of women complain of incontinence. This is caused by hormonal influences and the increasing load of the baby on the pelvic floor muscles. After

the birth it can take up to 6 weeks for circulating hormonal levels (Relaxin) to dissipate which means that the strength of pelvic floor muscles cannot return to full strength before that time. Even with a caesarian delivery circulating hormones still influence incontinence early after birth.

It’s very easy for pelvic floor muscles to get ignored after the birth of a new baby but the risks of ignoring them are not pleasant. They include ongoing and worsening incontinence, the need to wear pads for sport or even on a day to day basis and a loss of libido. Even if you’re not incontinent, the muscles may have been strained during birth so pelvic floor exercises should be commenced within 24 hours of delivery. Remembering to do your pelvic floor exercises every day may be a challenge but the benefits make it well worth thinking up some memory joggers. Try a “post-it note” on the fridge or behind the toilet door to get you started Don’t suffer in silence, incontinence is curable. Listen to Your Spine By Dr. Allen Bonilla DC (USA)

Although some habits are merely harmless annoyances, others are more dangerous and by their nature can be difficult to break. ‘Cracking’ or ‘popping’ the joints in your own neck or spine, especially among children, is one habit many parents would like to see their children break. But is it just a habit or is there something more to it? The urge to ‘crack’ or ‘pop’ the neck or back is often preceded by a sense of tension or pressure. Efforts to resist the urge can be futile or met with pain. To gain an understanding of why this is, it’s important to think about the spine, what it does and how it works. The nervous system is the most important system in the body. It controls and coordinates every function and system in the body. Due to the paramount importance of the nervous system, nature thought it prudent to protect it; for the brain it provided the skull, and for the spinal cord it provided the vertebrae. This is wonderful in that it allows us to move and jump and play and do all of the things that humans but it also has a downside. As anyone who’s ever owned a VCR surely understands, the more moving parts something has, the more there is that can go wrong.

catching, grinding and eventually locking. Aberrant motion in the spine also leads to wear and tear over time. In the spine this manifests as conditions such as degenerative disc disease or osteoarthritis. Self manipulation does not correct problems of the spine but instead increases the wear and tear on already damaged joints. Because spinal problems also affect the spinal nerves which control every aspect of the body’s function, other areas of health are also affected. The ‘habit’ of cracking your own neck is a surefire sign that there are misalignments affecting the motion of the spine. If you’re listening to a loved one cracking their spine; instead listen to what their body is trying to tell them. Chiropractic is the only health care profession which specialises in finding and correcting misalignments in the spine. Through this process, spinal motion is normalised and the urge to ‘crack’ or ‘pop’ the spine subsides showing that it was not a ‘bad habit’ at all. Your body was simply trying to tell you something. Please listen to it and call Chiropractic Works to have your families’ spines checked.

Like the gears of a clock, the vertebrae of the spine are meant to align and move in a certain way. Any change in that arrangement and you can expect a certain amount of

How to do a Thigh Stand Step 1: Each of you have a role: Flyer (the one who is stepping up) Base (the one you stand on) and a Spot Step 2: The Bases kneel like you are proposing with your bent leg being the one closest to the flyer Step 3: The Spot holds the flyer by the hips and assists them into and out of the stunt NEVER LETTING GO until the flyers feet are on the ground Step 4: The flyer places one foot onto the first bases bent leg, as close to their hip as possible. The base wraps her closest arm around the flyers knee tightly, and holds the toes in place with their other hand. Step 5: The flyer steps up and places the other foot onto the other base. Remember to look up and smile. Step 6: To get down step off the front with the assistance of your bases and spot. science

Wanna be a star or just seeing stars? Fancy yourself as a young EINSTIEN??? Well check out our new segment - PAK Science!!! With a few simple props, you can make your star image appear. WHAT YOU NEED: Cereal Box, Nail, Flashlight and Pencil. WHAT TO DO: Using the nail, poke holes as these will be the stars. Either follow a star chart or make your very own solar system. Now press the narrow end or handle end of the torch against the bottom centre of the box so that we can cut a hole for the torch to fit in. Draw a circle around the circle onto the box. Now fit the torch inside the box so that the handle is sticking out and you can hold it and turn it on and off. You are now ready to test out your new star-lit box and dazzle your friends. WHAT HAPPENS: Your light box projects groups of small, star like, lights on the ceiling or wall. WHY: Different constellations seem to sweep across the sky and are seen only at certain times of the year. From week to week and day to day, their positions change. It goes to show that the orbit of the earth around the sun has a big part to play on what you see in the night sky! www.pakmag.com.au

BULLETIN #18 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.

FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS!

In amongst the mangroves, on a large mound was his shack sitting in a large clearing. In one corner were a bed, sink, and small chair and in the other was a large object covered by a tattered and extremely worn sheet. “Is this where you live?” Trent asked, looking around for the toilet. “Yes, this is where I have lived for the last 40 years.” stated Bob, heading towards the large, hidden object.

Bulletin: Part XVIIi Last Edition: Without wasting another moment, all three Boppers began to search town for a submarine. Boat shops, marine mechanics, bait shops, the yacht club and the marina mirage were explored but nothing was found. The Boppers were beginning to lose hope, when all of a sudden an old, grey haired man emerged from the shadows and spoke, “I hear you are looking for a submarine, well I have something for you to see!” “Who are you?” asked Eleese, puzzled as to who the man was, where he came from and how he knew we were looking for a submarine. “My name is Bob but we haven’t got time to discuss this now, we need to go, you don’t have much time.” Bob replied, already heading off into the distance. All three boppers looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders and headed after the strange, yet helpful Bob.

“I have been working on this masterpiece for many years and knew that someday I would be able to help someone, and that someone is you!” explained Bob to the Boppers. As Bob was about to unveil the unknown object, Bree began to have doubt and was beginning to think that this was all a waste of time. Why were we so silly to follow Bob through the mangroves and expect that this crazy old quack, who had lived in the mangroves for so many years, could help us in defeating this crazy villain aboard the Coconut Cruiser. Bob reached over to the side of the tattered sheet and revealed his project that had taken him so many years to build. Slowly and carefully, Bob revealed his masterpiece to the three Boppers and they couldn’t believe what their eyes were seeing. To Be Continued…

Following Bob, the boppers didn’t know what to expect, but continued to follow him remaining very cautious and ready for anything. It had seemed like over an hour of walking but eventually, the old man spoke again, “We are here!”

RRRROOOOOAAARRR! Be afraid - The Lion!

The lion is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With exceptionally large males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the secondlargest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from Western Europe to India and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru. Should they survive the rigors of cub hood, lionesses in secure habitat such as Kruger National Park may frequently reach an age of 12–14 years whereas lions seldom live for longer than 8 years. However, there are records of lionesses living for up to 20 years in the wild. In captivity both male and female lions can live for over 20 years. They typically inhabit savannah and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

A large lion showing his teeth.

Eat

The prey consists mainly of large mammals, with a preference for wildebeest, impalas, zebras, buffalo, and warthogs in Africa and nilgai, wild boar, and several deer species in India

Habitat

In relatively recent times the habitat of lions spanned the southern parts of Eurasia, ranging from Greece to India, and most of Africa except the central rainforest-zone and the Sahara desert

Fact

While lions do not usually hunt people, some (usually males) seem to seek out human prey

Fact

The most common peaceful tactile gestures are head rubbing and social licking

Fact

In 2004, the estimated population of lion populating Africa was 25,000-45,000 in the wild.

Fact

The lion has been an icon for humanity for thousands of years

Modern Cloth Nappies Bree James Gets Started on Re-usable Nappies Since becoming a mother in February I have been initiated in to the world of flying poo, urine fountains and overflowing poo squeezing its way out of nappies and staining everything yellow. It has been an interesting learning curve. So far I’ve been using disposable nappies but after seeing the impact on my wallet and bin I decided it was time to investigate reusables. They’re cheaper to use and more environmentally friendly but unless you’re familiar with modern cloth nappies it can all seem a bit too hard. Luckily Jayne at Nurture Nappies was more than happy to answer my questions: Do reusable nappies cause more nappy rash than disposables? (especially in our tropical climate) No. The natural absorbent fibres allow your baby’s skin to breathe. Even the waterproof outers that are made from laminated polyester are comfortable and breathable. Do reusable nappies contain the ‘excretions’ as well as disposables?

How do I wash and care for reusables - is it messy and hard to do? It’s much easier than people imagine. With dirty nappies you will need to remove the excess poo in to the toilet (which you should be doing with disposables anyway – poo in the bin is illegal) and run cold water over them. Then you store them in a lidded bucket with a couple of drops of lavender or tea tree oil to eliminate smells until you decide to wash them. Simple as that. You don’t need to soak them. Then you just wash them with half as much additive free powder detergent as you would for a normal wash load but don’t use commercial fabric softeners as these coat the nappy fabric and reduce absorbency. All you have to do is empty your nappy bucket into the machine and wash with a pre wash rinse cycle and a long wash (hot or cold), followed by extra rinse. Then let them dry in the sun. It really is very easy.

They’re cheaper to use and more environmentally friendly than disposable nappies

Yes. Reusable nappies actually have better absorption than disposable nappies and they are designed to be adjustable for different shapes, sizes and absorbency demands. Are reusable nappies less comfortable than disposable nappies?

No, modern nappies have breathable soft fabrics and elasticised waists and legs which make them both comfortable and well fitted. Moisture is drawn away from bottoms just like disposables but without the need for icky polyacrylate crystal. Are reusable nappies really cheaper in the long run? Yes, the exact savings you’ll make obviously depend on the brand, where you buy them, quantity, and frequency

www.pakmag.com.au

of changing. The initial outlay for reusables is greater – about $650. Even though you’re only spending about $30 a week for disposables it adds up to about $3900 up until the child is toilet trained. So, it’s a huge saving and you save even more if you spread the cost over more children.

So, having done my research, I am now fully stocked with reusables and at this early stage I have to say I like them. And, let’s face it, it’s only a couple of extra loads of washing a week. Stay tuned to see how we go.

Did you know: • It takes a full cup of crude oil to make the plastic for each ‘disposable’ nappy • It takes as much energy to produce one disposable as it does to wash a cloth nappy 200 times • Disposables take up to 500 years to decompose in landfill sites and can harbour up to 100 different types of virus

Baby Gestures: Babies who gesture do well in school

By Elaine Seager

It has long been known amongst those who work in kindergartens that there is a wide variation in childrens’ command of language when they enter school. Research shows that this is largely determined by socio-economic status. Children from wealthy, better educated parents have a significant advantage because their parents talk to them more and use a wider and more complex vocabulary. Unfortunately for children from less advantaged families, the extent of vocabulary at school age is a predictor of future school success.

So, why is gesturing so important? Lots of evidence exists to show that gesturing not only improves how we speak but also how well we think, learn and remember. One study showed that when children were asked to solve maths problems they were much more likely to perform well if they were also asked to gesture as they went through their thought processes.

However, whilst vocabulary is known to be a predictor of school success, researchers in the USA have gone one step further recently and discovered that differences begin even before children can speak. Babies who use gestures are the ones who go on to learn wider vocabularies. These studies show that better educated parents not only talk more to their babies but they also use gestures more to convey meaning and explain new concepts. Consequently their children also use gestures more and gain a much quicker grasp of language. Gesturing toddlers go on to have a wider vocabulary and do better in school.

• Become conscious of using gesturing and expressions in your conversations

What does this mean for you? • Respond to your baby’s gestures

• Point to things and explain what you’re doing • When your toddler points at things tell them what its called • Use lively gesturing to express new concepts eg. lively clapping for happiness

The uniquely Australian play doll! If you have been searching for a doll for your young, impressionable daughter/granddaughter that portrays a healthier image, then we have found the doll for you! The idea of a uniquely Australian play doll was sparked when Helen Schofield couldn’t find quality dolls for her own granddaughters. Helen also became aware that the concern she already had regarding the negative impact of popular culture on young children appeared to be growing in many others across the Australian community. These two things were her inspiration and motivation to do something and with the help and encouragement of family and friends, she did. Helen states, 'From the feedback we are getting on a daily basis girls in the 8-12 age group are loving the freedom to play with dolls that make them feel good about themselves - we have a lot of customers in that age group who are getting right into dolls again'. Water Fluoridation By 1300Smiles

Water fluoridation is an initiative which has been used successfully for many decades around the world to help protect the teeth. However, whilst most of Australia’s capital cities have been fluoridated for the past 20 years, the major exception is Brisbane and the rest of Queensland. It has been the subject of debate and discussion in state parliament but we still don’t have it. What’s it all about? Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance, and is present to some degree in all foods and drinks. It is added to the water supplies because it has been shown that people who drink water with higher levels of fluoride experience less tooth decay.

How does it work? Tooth decay occurs when acid destroys the outer surface of the teeth. Fluoride helps protect the teeth from this process by making the enamel and root surface (if exposed) stronger. It strengthens the surface of the teeth for anybody regardless of age but it is particularly effective for young children since it becomes built in to the structure of the teeth as they are developing and calcifying (Studies have shown that tooth decay

INTRODUCING DENTAL THERAPIST TANIA PATERSON

in children aged between 5-12 years in regions with fluoridated water can be reduced by as much as 45%). Another benefit of fluoride is that it is also able to limit the amount of acid produced and can repair the damage that acidity causes before it does permanent damage.

Why should we fluoridate Cairns water? The short answer is to improve dental health. Tooth decay is largely preventable but it still has a significant impact on the health of our community and results in a lot of cost to repair it. Adding fluoride to the water is the cheapest and most effective way of delivering these benefits to the whole community. And, the overwhelming body of scientific evidence shows that fluoride does not contribute to any serious health problems. The only possible side effect is mottling or dental fluorosis which is caused by too much fluoride. It can occur in children 0-6 years but with careful supervision it can be avoided (ie. use low fluoride toothpaste and encourage them to spit not swallow the toothpaste) We will all benefit from water fluoridation so let’s all support it in Cairns. For any queries or concerns please feel free to contact Tania at 1300Smiles Cairns Central or Smithfield branches on 1300 764 537.

As a Dental Therapist Tania works solely with 4 to 17 year olds. Her duties include examinations, x-rays, restoration of baby and adult teeth, cleaning and fluoride applications, emergency treatment due to caries (decay) and trauma, oral health & diet instruction. Breastfeeding in Public It still invites a lot of heated debate so did Amanda Mathiot go too far when she posted a photo of herself breastfeeding on Facebook?!

Sifting through recent Christmas photo’s, I found one that I really loved of me breastfeeding my 1 year old daughter in the pool. I wanted to share it with my online friends and without a second thought I uploaded the picture to my Facebook account, sent it to friends and family and thought nothing more of it. A few hours later I saw that a male friend had made a comment and whilst I knew he meant no offence, his little joke got me thinking. I soon discovered that photos of babies being breastfed were being taken off Facebook because they were deemed inappropriate or the pictures were ‘flagged’ if a nipple was showing. Feeling like a “Breastfeeding in Public” advocate I decided to make a stand and joined every group that supported breastfeeding in public as a natural and very normal event. After making sure that an invitation to every group was emailed to this certain friend, I gave myself a pat on the back for a job well done. That day I had done my part for furthering the cause of Breastfeeding Women. Then I got thinking and started to get a bit paranoid and embarrassed. Had I pushed the boundaries by sharing this photo with my friends? To me it was no different to my daughter having a drink of juice while sitting in the pool but I started questioning my views on feeding in public. Were they a bit ‘out there’? I’ve been breastfeeding for at least 8 years out of the last 14 so I’m totally used to getting my boobs out and don’t really think about it. Yes, I’m the woman walking around the supermarket breastfeeding whilst checking out the frozen peas section.

38

With 6 kids, if I stopped what I was doing every time one of them had wanted a feed to find somewhere secluded I think I would’ve gone a bit battier then I am already. So, I asked another group of online friends for their thoughts. Their replies reassured me and some of them even went and added their own comments in Facebook. Afterwards I felt a bit mean; this poor man had made one simple little comment and now he was being besieged by invitations to breastfeeding groups and ganged up on by other mums. Was I being a bully? ‘Follow me ladies and lets teach this guy a lesson!!” My rampant activist feeling soon subsided when I realised why this picture was so important to me. For me it represents many years of breastfeeding and how far I have come. With my first son I had worried about other peoples feelings and always fed in private. Consequently, I gave up breastfeeding after only four or five months but with my other children I followed my instincts and focused on keeping the baby and myself happy. Once I did that I’ve been able to successfully feed the other five babies until they were around 18mths old. My daughter is 15mths now and still going strong. As she is my last baby I’m going to allow her to self wean. My friend and I never discussed the ‘event’ but he has never been brave enough to comment on another photo of mine since!

Skiing in New Zealand by Travel with Kids

Snow seems like a far-off fairytale concept to kids from the tropics, which makes a winter ski trip all the more special and magical. Just imagine the fun they can have building snowmen, having snowball fights and tobogganing on dustbin liners! Meanwhile, you can also be breathing in crisp mountain air as you ‘stylishly’ zig-zag down pristine white slopes. Skiing is huge fun for the whole family and it’s also a great way to enjoy being fit and active together (start doing your thigh exercises a few weeks before you leave!). We have several snow fields in Australia but the snow and skiing are excellent in New Zealand and there’s not a big difference in costs. The best times to go are from June-Sept and booking early enables you to take advantage of some good Early Bird Offers. The best place to stay is Queenstown on the South Island. It is not only close to some of New Zealand’s best snowfields at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, but it also has the

reputation for being the world’s favourite adrenaline destination. So, if you get bored of skiing you can have a dabble at skydiving, bungy jumping, jetboating, canyon swinging, whitewater rafting, parapenting, heli-skiing and lots more. There is also a fantastic luge run which is great fun for the kids. Queenstown itself is beautiful with lots of cafes and restaurants with views of majestic mountains and the gorgeous blue lake. The natural environment also means there are opportunities for beautiful walks, hiking, sailing, climbing, fishing, cycling, golfing, off-roading, or mountain biking. It’s unlikely that anyone would ever get bored in Queenstown. How to get there: There are flights available with Qantas, Air New Zealand or Pacific Blue. Packages are the most cost effective way to go and can include your airfares, accommodation, car hire, lift pass, clothing, ski’s, poles and boots plus tours. Airfares start from $956.00 with Air New Zealand ex Cairns.

Cooktown Barbara Randle, originally a Cooktown local, gives us an insider’s guide to her home town in the run up to this year’s Discovery Festival. Situated 3_ hours drive from Cairns, Cooktown is the northern most town on the east coast of Australia. It was the first settlement in Australia when Captain Cook had to stop and do repairs on his ship the Endeavour in 1770. 100 years later Cooktown became a supply port to the goldfields and the population swelled to around 7,000 with 49 pubs. Its population swelled once again in World War II when around 20,000 troops were stationed in and around the town. Presently Cooktown has a population of around 1,800 people and is once again a small town without the hustle and bustle. There are plenty of places to stay from budget to resort style and quite a few places to eat from takeaway to fine dining. Your first stop in Cooktown should be the Museum. It is amazing; the building itself is beautiful and full of all sorts of historical items from the gold rush times through to more recent items of interest. Quite honestly I have never seen anything as scary as the old dental equipment (which will surely make your kids brush their teeth) to the extremely small Chinese ladies shoes from a time when binding women’s feet was considered beautiful. Put aside at least 3 hours to see everything and afterwards go for a walk through the cemetery and look at the old headstones as well as the Chinese shrine too.

If you love your fishing then you can try your luck at the wharf which is a very popular spot or there are also dingy hires available. Or, if you’re feeling really keen there is also a local charter boat available. If fishing is not your scene you can take a nice cruise up the river and more than likely you will get lucky and see a croc as well as enjoy a really informative tour. Another place worth checking out is the Botanical Gardens which were established in 1878 and cover 62 hectares and contain some very beautiful plants and flowers. They have also built the Natures Powerhouse which is the home of the Charles Tanner Gallery and the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery. Of course no trip to Cooktown is complete without a drive up Grassy Hill to the lighthouse to admire the amazing view out over the land and sea with the reefs visible on a clear day. There are lots of information boards everywhere to fill you in on the history of the area and you should definitely pick up info brochures form the local Information centre. There are some lovely beaches in the area and both Finches and Quarantine Bay are nice and at the right time of year (not stinger season) they are good for swimming.

left: Cooktown Discovery Festival

On the way to Cooktown you should stop at the Black Mountains and read the sign regarding their history – they are the most incredible natural feature and have an amazing aboriginal story to go with them. Just before then is the Little Annan River which is a very popular swimming hole and camping spot, perfect for a stop along the way. Cooktown hosts the re-enactment of Cooks landing on the Queen’s Birthday (June 6th -8th) long weekend every year and it is a weekend full of activities and family fun. From the Grand Parade, truck pull, cemetery and garden tours, markets, family movies, billy cart racing, heaps of evening entertainment as well as the actual re-enactment of Cooks landing and firing of the cannon it is a fantastic weekend. This year they are even having a ball where

If you love your country race meets then Cooktown is the place to be in July when they host the Amateur Turf Club races which are always well attended and very social. In September just down the road at Home Rule Falls is the Wallaby Creek Folk Festival which is a weekend of music, markets and fun for the family. a trip to...

AJ Hackett: More ‘Family- Friendly’

Than You Might Think. By Elaine Seager I spent at least 2 years nervously working my way up to doing a bungy jump. I was going to do it on my 40th birthday as a way to symbolise leaping in to middle age but then I got pregnant. Then I promised my partner that I’d do it on my 41st birthday but I was having a bad hair day. I thought about it on my 42nd birthday but pretended I’d forgotten about it. Then 2 weeks later I happened to be at AJ Hackett for the afternoon with a bunch of people and somehow got talked in to taking the plunge. I can honestly say that the worst part is climbing up the stairs. I was completely breathless by the time we got to the top due to altitude, nerves and extreme fear. Down below the rest of our group were small dots on the ground. There was a bit of a queue at the top which meant plenty of time to get even more nervous, to laugh at other people pooing themselves and to wonder what style of plunge to go for. AJ Hackett have turned bungy jumps in to quite an art form – there’s swan dives, psycho back dives, pendulums, fruit bat’s, titanic jumps and a tons of other ways to throw yourself off a very high platform. If you’re totally mental you can even do it blindfolded. Call me old-fashioned but my goal was to get down with clean pants and without showing the world by boobs. As you line your toes up along the edge you can’t exactly avoid looking down and it’s a surreal experience knowing what you’re about to do. I wondered how I should start – should I dive off as though diving in to a pool or just chuck myself off any old how? And, how long should I wait? I imagined my 2-year old down below and decided to be a cool Mum doing a graceful swan dive. The next

thing I remember was being yanked on my elastic. At last it was all over and with clean pants and no boobs on show. Was it fun? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes, I probably would. Bungy’s are a short thrill but there’s plenty more reasons to hang around at AJ Hackett. This is a gorgeous venue right in the middle of rainforest with the bar area overlooking a beautiful natural blue pool. If nothing else, this is just a great place to hang out in wonderful surroundings with some fairly hilarious entertainment. And, if you think this is just a place for young people and backpackers, think again. Sunday afternoons are familyfriendly with live music and a free bouncy castle for the kids and even ‘grandma’s’ are welcome! Importantly the queue’s for the bouncy castle are relatively short so the kids are very well entertained whilst you enjoy the atmosphere.

DID YOU KNOW: • The concept of Bungy was taken from the Pentecost Island of Vanuatu where young men test their courage by jumping from hand-made structures. • AJ Hackett first launched his Bungy business by jumping illegally from the Eiffel Tower. He was arrested but it created worldwide media attention • AJ Hackett now operates in 9 countries • In 20 years, 2 million jumps have been safely made. • The purpose built tower at the Cairns site is 50 metres high (it’s the highest observatory deck in Cairns). AJ Hackett is located on McGregor Road in Smithfield. For $99 locals can bungy as much as they want for a whole year.

Honouring women who give life, and bravely talk about it.

By Bronwyn Lindsay

As a small child, Mothers Day presented me another opportunity to hear about the night I was born. Year after year, my mother would tell me of the mad dash to hospital and how she ran to the nursery minutes after my birth, so eager to gaze at her new baby girl. While the story changed a little each time, it was always followed with a string of curious questions about babies, bodies and sexuality. Unlike most, my mother was unfazed by the Spanish Inquisition I routinely put her through. Although my questions became curlier as I got older, she felt it was important for me to receive positive messages about sexuality and would answer as best she could. Now, as a mother myself, I applaud her efforts and encourage all parents and carers to embrace teachable moments such as these. It’s been proven the messages young children receive about their bodies and relationships lay the foundation for future learning about sexuality, and their values and attitudes. Research has shown children who are well informed about sexuality are more likely to feel positive about themselves and their bodies, feel comfortable to talk to trusted adults when they have questions or need help, and understand the rules about types of touch. Clearly, positive communication about sexuality is very important. Yet when it comes to instigating these discussions, people are often reluctant and embarrassed. I must admit, I’m a little afraid of the day my son asks me where babies come from. FPQ believe one of the best things parents and carers can do is provide children with simple answers to their questions; to be a source of honest and open communication. By doing this a clear message is given that sexuality is a subject you are happy

www.pakmag.com.au

and willing to discuss and it’s more likely you will be called on for advice as your children grow up. FPQ suggest the following tips to help you prepare yourself cope with feelings of embarrassment. • Take a deep breath before you begin • Acknowledge feelings of embarrassment with the person you are talking to. For example, “I feel a bit embarrassed talking about this, but I feel that it’s important.” • Be easy on yourself, it’s normal to have feelings of embarrassment, to giggle or to feel yourself blushing when talking about sexuality • Practice saying ‘vulva’ and ‘penis’ by yourself until it comes as easily to you as saying things like ‘knee’ • Read books about sexuality written for children to learn how different topics can be explained using simple, age appropriate language and descriptions I sincerely hope the collection of tips I’m compiling will ensure I approach sexuality education with the same composure my mother did. So for me, Mothers Day is more than the expected purchase of slippers, flowers and gift-card prose. It’s a special day honouring the woman who not only gave me life, but was brave enough about to talk about it. Family Planning Queensland (FPQ) is a leading provider of sexual and reproductive health services to people in Queensland. FPQ produces resources to support early childhood professionals, parents and carers to provide sexuality education and support healthy sexual development. For more information, visit www.fpq.com.au

DIY pak projects

Mother’s Day Bath Bombs By Amanda Mathiot

With Mother’s Day approaching quickly on the 10th May what better way to show Mums and Grandma’s how much you care by creating these relaxing bath bombs or bath fizzles (obviously Dad might need to be the project manager this month!). These bath bombs are simple and fun to make, the ingredients are easily attainable and inexpensive. Most of it you might already have in your pantry and bathroom. If not grab them next time you’re at the supermarket. To make 6 bath bombs you will need: Ingredients: 2/3 cup Citric Acid 1/3 cup Baking Soda Witch Hazel Colouring of your choice (dry pigments are available at most good craft shops) Fragrance oil of your choice Dome shape moulds (we used a muffin tin) Utensils: Bowl Electric hand mixer or mixing spoon Empty spray bottle Muffin tin What you do: 1. Blend your Citric Acid and baking soda in the bowl. Blend, blend, blend and when you’re finished blending, blend some more. This step is very important; if you don’t blend well you will end up with grainy bombs. We used the electric mixer to make sure we did a good job. 2. Once you’ve blended really well, add your colour. Don’t add too much though, the colour shows up once you add the witch hazel. We decided not to use colour in ours. 3. Add fragrance oils - we used peppermint. 4. Now this is the tricky part. Maybe ask somebody to help you with this step. Put your witch-hazel in the spray bottle. Spritz (or spray) the witch hazel on to your batch while stirring with the other hand. Or get your helper to stir while you spritz. When your batch sticks together when squished you need to start putting it into the moulds or muffin tins like we have used. Time is very important in this step. If you wait too long, the mixture will get hard. If you spritz too much, the mixture will be too wet and start the fizzing reaction. 5. Put the bombs into the moulds, wait a few minutes and tap them out. Let them air dry for 3 or 4 hours and there you have it. Wonderful, fizzy bath bombs. Maybe you could wrap them up in some nice cellophane and add a lovely bow and a hand made card.

Here are some ideas for Mother’s Day Cards In your Mother’s Day card maybe you could write Mum a lovely little poem or to make your card extra special, write about a special memory that you have of you and your Mum (Mum’s love that kind of stuff) If you are really stuck for words, here are a couple of quotes that will always make Mum feel loved. ~ A mother holds her children’s hand for a while but their hearts forever. ~ ~ A mother’s heart is a patchwork of love. ~ ~ First my mother, forever my friend. ~ ~ Mothers are the only angels in whom the whole world believes. ~

Playgroup: Melissa McGlew explains the important role of Playgroups for families. The typical rollercoaster ride of emotions that new Mum’s experience swings from moments of being overwhelmed, confused and fatigued to moments of joy, euphoria and exhilaration at bringing a new baby in to the world. These feelings are perfectly normal and one of the best ways of coping with all of these changes is to meet other Mum’s who are experiencing the same thing so that you know that you’re not alone. Playgroups exist to allow family members in the community who are caring for young children to come together and meet new people. Importantly it is a good opportunity for both Mum and child to get out of the house and connect with others. At Playgroup Mums, Dads, Grandparents and caregivers come together each week with their babies, toddlers, and preschoolers for interaction and fun. Parents of all ages who are either first time parents or have a couple of children are welcomed and all of them find that Playgroup benefits them greatly. In Cairns there are a variety of Playgroups including Community Playgroups (parent driven), Mobile Supported Playgroups (with a facilitator and family support worker), Supported Playgroups (with a temporary coordinator), Play Connect (for children with Autism or ASD-like symptoms), My Time (for parents/carers with a child/ren with a disability) and Playgroup Plus (teacher-facilitated playgroup). Recent research indicates that your baby’s first three years are really important for brain development and future health and well being. For optimum development a baby/child needs a stimulating environment to play and learn so at Playgroup there is a wide variety of learning experiences available that will assist in developing a child’s social, emotional, intellectual and physical skills and understanding.

48

Many parents, especially those who choose not to use childcare, value the opportunity for their children to learn about the world, make friends and develop social skills. There are a range of activities offered which encompass water, sand, creative, physical, musical, sensory, pretend play and play with words. Playgroup also gives parents, grandparents and caregivers a chance to meet and share ideas and experiences, discuss problems and empathise about the joys and frustrations of parenting. Many longterm friendships begin at Playgroup, with parents and carers welcoming new members all the time and building supportive networks that can last a lifetime. Parents have the opportunity to relax and talk in a friendly and safe environment, play with children, form strong bonds with their child/ren, nurture a spirit of cooperation and take up opportunities for personal development all while working together to run the Playgroup. There are many Playgroups all around Australia, and they are particularly useful for those parents who are new to town or who feel isolated. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends and it also helps you to broaden your knowledge of the community and the local resources and services that are available to families. There are several Playgroups in Cairns so it’s a good idea to visit a few different ones until you find a Playgroup that suits you and your needs. eating out

2 tone tapas By Nathan Dainey

‘Date Nights’ are few and far between for parents and with all the effort that goes into organising one you want to make sure it’s well worth the effort. There’s nothing worse than going to all the trouble and expense of getting babysitters only to have the evening turn out to be a disappointment. You can stop worrying and start relaxing if you’re planning a visit to ‘2 Tone Tapas’ restaurant and cocktail lounge. Dubbed as the ‘destination venue’ where you stop in before you start your night out, it is located on Lake Street so it’s close to the movies , music, clubs and a close stroll to the Esplanade and City Place. Whilst quality usually comes with a substantial bill at the end of the meal, looks can be deceiving, 2 Tone’s intimate setting is surprisingly affordable. As a Spanish restaurant, it is very much about the Spanish culture’s philosophy and passion for life good food and great experiences. New ownership has brought a breath of fresh creativity and new flavours to the restaurant with the newly revived 2 Tone becoming the talk of Cairns and rightly so. The best of Spain combined with the very best of local produce meld into a sensory experience which is incredibly satisfying. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and if this is true I am in a romantic relationship with more than one of the dishes at 2 Tone. Home Smoked Chorizo, grilled Saganaki cheese and tomato fig jam have become my favourite ingredients in some of the flavour rich dishes on the menu. There are some familiar items such as Salt and Pepper Squid, but as Darrel Kerrigan

50

would say ‘it’s what you do with it’ that makes it magic. Then there’s the unexpected chicken wings marinated in sherry, bulls blood wine with smoked garlic, balsamic vinegar and sesame oil and chicken liver and port wine pate becoming definite tapas hits. Tapas is their speciality and if you’re wondering what it is they are a form of complimentary entree. Quite similar to the craze that has made sushi trains so popular, tapas allow you to have a nibble of several different dishes without it costing the Earth. Prices for Tapas begin at $7.90 and go up to $30 for a multi-plate tapas feast. Our capable hosts at 2 Tone are also masters at cocktails and what would a tapas restaurant be without Sangria. Their tropical take on Sangria came with strawberries, watermelon and lime with a rose wine. Quite genius. The gracious professional service, great music and wonderful food and drinks made my review a special night topped off by the fiery spectacular, flambé Bombe Alaska desert. Whether it’s your first date or it’s been a long line of dates I can reassure you it won’t be your last if you come to 2 Tone. Adios amigo’s!

JOKES

Time for a break Blonde paint job A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do. "Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?" The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?" The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch." A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. "Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. "And by the way," the blonde added, "that's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."
