Yay it’s nearly Christmas! I always start the month of November feeling really excited about Christmas but by the time it gets here, I have usually sung enough Christmas Carols, wrapped enough Christmas presents, and eaten enough Christmas pudding to last me a lifetime. Then it takes 11 months to get all exicted again and lose the extra pounds I have accumulated.

Doting Dads Which meal do you cook for the kids that they just love? – Fish fingers & veges! Do you prefer mornings or evenings at your place? – early mornings because the day is always brand new and the kids are always excited about something that is going to happen. How much pocket money should kids get? – Ours are a bit young but I think pocket money should always be within reason – maybe relative to how they are helping out in the household. What’s the best thing about being a dad? – the excitement in their faces when you have been away and you come home. What’s your favourite family activity? - Taking the boat over to Bribie Island and going to the beach. What have you learnt from being a father? - Patience! And things aren’t always as important as we make out. Who runs the household – mum, dad or the kids? - Definitely mum – I’m just there as the back-up.

Feeling pestered? Elaine Seager explores the issue of advertising that specifically targets children. This is the busiest time of year for the advertising industry as they bombard us (and our children) with encouragements to grow Santa’s wish lists. Advertising specifically to children has always been criticised but is under the spotlight again after Anna Bligh’s recent announcement that she will consider banning fast food advertising to children because of the problems associated with the rise in obesity. Like all of us, children are surrounded by advertising from many different sources but the most contentious (and effective for advertisers) is television advertising. Within free-to-air children’s programming, there can be up to 15 minutes of advertising per hour and based on the fact that it’s estimated that the average Australian child watches 2½ hours of TV a day, that means, they’ll be exposed to at least 75 ads a day. Most of these are for confectionery, soft drinks, sugared cereals and fast food (and toys in the run up to Christmas). So, given that advertising is so much a part of modern life, why is it such a problem when it’s specifically targeted towards children? Firstly, advertising itself is not inherently bad (if there was a product that could save your life you’d probably want to know about it wouldn’t you?) but one of the issues with children’s advertising is that many of the products that are targeted at them are not necessarily good for them. Nutritionists around the country are no doubt pulling their hair out when they see what kids are encouraged to eat on TV! More importantly, children are vulnerable because they don’t understand the difference between programmes and advertising and they don’t yet have the
6
ability to critically analyse ‘selling’ techniques and discern truth from exaggeration. Children tend to just believe what they see and then pester you for it!
Pester Power ‘Influential purchasing’, otherwise known as pester power before it became a sensitive issue, has been a strategy employed by advertisers for many years where the intention is to get children to nag parents to buy things for them. Research shows that over 80% of children have asked for something as a result of seeing advertising and that over 60% of parents have surrendered to their demands!
Why do advertisers target kids? Targeting kids in the advertising industry is big business and a lot of money gets spent on researching children’s media habits so that advertisers can target them more effectively. Kids are specifically targeted these days not only because they have considerable pocket money to spend of their own but also because they are important influencers on family shopping (on everything from breakfast cereals to the family car). And, advertisers want to recruit children to their brands to create life-long brand loyal consumers (people tend to stick with what they know and stick with brands that feel familiar to them). All of this leads to them effectively driving sales for their products and whilst fast food advertisers are quick to
www.pakmag.com.au
argue that advertising isn’t really that influential, the reality is, it works and if it didn’t they wouldn’t be doing it. And, even worse, children’s airtime is cheap to buy so they can afford to buy lots of it!
Movies Movies may be classed as entertainment rather than advertising but they are also created to get you to buy more ‘stuff’ for your kids. Children’s movies are big money spinners in an industry where very few film releases actually make money at the box office. Many movies, if they turn a profit at all, won’t do so until the DVD’s are released and the TV rights are sold but the merchandising opportunities that come with kids movies enable the film companies to generate much more profit. Clothing, toys, games and all the other spin-offs from movies are huge business. Subsequently, a movies’ merchandising potential often determines whether or not it even gets made in the first place.
shareholder profits and the people who plan advertising campaigns are usually young people who don’t have families and rarely consider the social consequences. And, even if they did, they are employed to sell more stuff, not have a social conscience!
Research shows that over 80% of children have asked for something as a result of seeing advertising and that over 60% of parents have surrendered to their demands! What you can do about it
Junk Food Advertising There are many factors affecting the trend toward increasing childhood obesity (predominantly the fact that our kids are doing less sport and exercise and eating diets with higher fat contents than in the past). Fast food advertising may be a factor in causing people to eat too much junk food but it does not single-handedly cause people to be fat. However, what it does do is undermine the message to children about healthy eating. On the one hand they are being told to eat healthy food and then they are bombarded with advertising for foods which are not all that healthy. Younger kids in particular are vulnerable to this since they can’t make this distinction (especially when a free toy comes with it!).
OK, I have a confession to make. I used to work in the advertising and film industries. However, now that I’m a mum I have changed my views on advertising to children and consequently my daughter is going to find it difficult to watch anything other than the ABC! I’ll also be doing my best to grow a DVD collection which includes titles without associated merchandising (although I should point out that so far I am failing miserably and have succumbed to Dora and the Wiggles against my better judgement). As parents we can censor how much advertising our children are exposed to and this is particularly important to do for those children who are under 8 years. You can’t keep them completely ignorant of what’s out there so it’s more a case of being aware of limits. So, if you don’t want to be nagged constantly and knee-deep in bits of crappy plastic, vote with your remote control by hiding it in a very high place!
Ultimately there is unlikely to be a complete ban on advertising to children and so it comes down to corporations taking responsibility for what they advertise and how. Unfortunately, the people at the top who are in a position to take a stand are more worried about

Why Is The Top And Bottom Cut Off In The Prints From My Digital Camera? Different size prints have different shapes. The normal 6x4 print size is quite rectangular and was originally intended for 35mm film cameras, as it is the same shape as the negative from these (a ratio of width to height of 3:2 ). Most compact digital cameras however take a squarer shaped image (a ratio of width to height of 4:3), the same shape as most computer screens have been up until now. When printing a 6x4 print from most compact digital cameras, a small amount of the image cannot be printed as it is too wide for that size print. Most photo kiosks will show you the area that will be printed in the cropping section, which can normally be adjusted up or down to make sure that you don’t cut anyone’s head off in the print. It is not really a problem, just something to be aware of. Other print sizes such as enlargements are different shapes again and will have different printable areas, sometimes you may lose a little at each side of the photo rather than the top and bottom. Some photo kiosks now also have the option for no cropping. The full area of your photo will be printed but there will be white ends on each side of the 6x4 print which can be cut off if desired. Tip - Some newer digital cameras now also have what is called a 3:2 or postcard shooting mode which will give you virtually no image loss when printed to a normal 6x4 print. (Some cameras now also have a 16:9 mode which will fill the screen if played back on a widescreen TV).

How to avoid financial stress over christmas By James Mousa
Every year the Christmas decorations seem to come out earlier, the advertising starts sooner and the silly party season seems to get more and more expensive. No sooner does night fall on Christmas Day and another 365 days roll by and it starts all over again. So, now its here again how can we survive the Christmas mayhem from a financial perspective? Here are a few tips to ease the burden on the hip pocket over Christmas and help you keep your sanity. Christmas Dinner: Times are getting tougher, and grocery prices are rising. Why not spend Christmas Dinner with friends and family and share the burden of cooking and paying for it by sharing dishes? Have a tropical banquet outdoors or have a beach BBQ and allocate a dish for each person to bring to share. Bulk-buy meat (eg. steak, snags or turkey) from Cairns fantastic wholesale butchers! Christmas Wrapping: Why not donate to one of the many charities who offer gift wrapping for a gold coin donation or check if a gift wrapping service is offered since some places have the facility but won’t advertise it. If you are going to wrap at home, get some paint and butchers paper and make your own. This is a lot of fun for families to do together and looks fantastic! Write the name on to the present and eliminate the need for nametags, stickers or cards (it might only save a little but it all adds up!). Presents: We love to offer gifts as a show of affection and appreciation but don’t lose sight of what Christmas really means. Spend time trying to find the “right” gift that may cost less than buying many gifts or why not get creative and actually make some gifts. Presents from the heart always carry more value. For those who LOVE shopping, you could give them money instead and let them go bargain hunting in the Boxing Day sales. Or some people may prefer the gift of time – what would make grandma happier, more smelly soaps or an afternoon spent with a younger family member?
www.pakmag.com.au
Plan ahead: It might be already too late for this year but it makes sense to set money aside for Christmas by saving for it throughout the year. Also, take opportunities during the year to find “the perfect” gift for someone special when they are in the sales. Next year you could have all your Christmas shopping done before December! Remember what’s important: Don’t get caught up in sweeping consumerism, young children won’t remember not having the latest pokemon, tamagotchi or other mass-marketed toy. With small children it’s the time and attention we give them that really counts. Buy things that enable you to play together and build relationships. Nothing is as valuable as time. The greatest gift of all - Education. Buy toys that help your children learn about money and finance. Teaching them good lessons early in life will be the gift that keeps giving. Check out interactive games like “Game of Life”, “Monopoly” or Kiyosaki’s “Rat Race” and don’t let them gather dust on a shelf. Spend time playing them with your kids and helping them understand. Set them on the right path early! Here’s to a happy festive season, and though I love finance, remember, money isn’t everything!

pak health As a naturopath I often meet clients who are ‘adrenally exhausted’ or, in layman’s terms, they have burnout. The chronic form of adrenal exhaustion seems to be on the increase, especially in busy women who are trying to do more than one job at a time – running a household, raising children and possibly working part or full time. So, what is adrenal exhaustion? Your adrenals are small glands that sit on top of the kidneys. They are responsible for secreting your stress hormones, including adrenalin and noradrenalin, which are important in causing the physiological changes that occur in your body when you are stressed. This is called your “fight or flight” response, and in caveman terms, it is all about whether you stay and fight the beast, or run away. Adrenalin stimulates blood supply to the muscles, gets the heart beating faster and makes you more alert, in order to deal with the stressful situation. When you are under long-term stress, your adrenal glands are constantly under pressure to respond, and they can eventually become exhausted. Almost everyone experiences adrenal exhaustion at some time in their life and the general weakness that follows any acute illness or infection is a classic example. The most common symptoms of adrenal exhaustion are fatigue (with or without anxiety and insomnia), low blood pressure (which causes dizziness when getting up to stand), loss of memory, difficulty in concentrating, general over-sensitivity (everything seems to bother you and small events are blown way out of proportion), and a feeling of detachment and despondency during the day, and anxiety at night. Other symptoms include hair falling out, poor immune function, irritable bowel symptoms, blood sugar imbalances (craving sugar), waking in the early hours of the morning (classically 2am, and wanting to eat something at that time), palpitations, back pain, loss of libido and shakiness. So what can we do about it? Employing any type of relaxation method will certainly help, including yoga, tai chi, meditation, taking long walks in nature – through the bush or on the beach, or enjoying a relaxing social life.
www.pakmag.com.au
Mummy Burn-Out Naturopath Kerrin Booth explains ‘burn-out’ and what we can do to combat it There are also various herbal medicines and nutrients that have a particularly nourishing action on the adrenal glands. Vitamin C is extremely important at doses of at least 2000mg per day, and some B vitamins are also essential for adrenal function – you can find good B complexes that are specifically formulated for stress. There are two excellent herbs that nourish the adrenal glands, Siberian Ginseng and Withania. Your diet also plays an important role. Avoid caffeine, which overstimulates the adrenals and leads them to become even more exhausted. Alcohol should be taken in moderation – use relaxing herbal teas instead to wind down at the end of the day. Make sure your blood sugar levels are balanced by including protein with every meal and avoiding refined white sugar, flour and rice – use wholegrains only.

Not everyone has the perfect nutrient-dense diet, and kids can cause a lot of worry for their parents when they are fussy eaters and won’t eat the foods that are best for them. In these situations a multivitamin and mineral supplement can ensure that their daily nutritional requirements are being met although it is never going to replace a good diet. Other indications that a child may benefit from a multi-vit is if they are constantly catching infections or chronically ill, particularly when they are on long-term medication. When buying a multivitamin and mineral supplement for children these are some points to consider: Make sure it doesn’t contain sugar (sucrose) or artificial sweeteners. Natural sweeteners, such as stevia, fructose, barley malt, or sugar alcohols, such as xylitol are OK. Make sure it doesn’t contain artificial colours and flavours. Most good quality brands use natural colours and flavours.
Compare different brands and choose the strongest. Some brands have so little in them that they may as well be having a placebo. A children’s multi is always going to be a low dose, so choose the highest dose possible, especially if your child is older. Remember, once they have turned 12, they can take an adult strength multivitamin. There are also some excellent “superfoods” that contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals naturally and can be added to food or drink, to boost the nutrient content in the diet. Here are a couple of ideas: Spirulina powder – Add ½ teaspoon to apple or carrot juice daily for a cool green drink. Missing Link – A powdered combination of superfoods. Add 1 teaspoon daily to a smoothie or sprinkle on cereal. Also great for cats and dogs and parents!
Healthy Snacking If the middle aisles in the supermarkets are anything to go by we must be a nation obsessed by snacks! Apparently there are well over 1500 different lines of packaged snacks available to us which probably partly explains why so many of use are struggling with being overweight. Snacking between meals is an indulgence and not a necessity and, in fact, too much snacking can actually lead to unhealthy eating patterns because your stomach never gets the opportunity to fully empty. We are designed to eat when we’re empty and stop when we’re full. Occasional snacking, of course, is not a problem but if it becomes a habit then expect to see the results on your burgeoning waistline!
These are a few suggestions for healthy snack options: Fruit Dried fruit (eg. sultanas) Yogurt A handful of nuts and/or seeds smoothies Wholegrain toast
As far as children are concerned several research studies have shown that the most common snack foods in schools are chips and other packaged snacks whilst a third eat no fruit on any given day! According to nutritionists, junk food snacks such as crisps, cakes and biscuits really ought to be only seen as occasional treats for children. As far as snacks in general are concerned one snack between meals is sufficient otherwise it will spoil their appetite for proper meals. If you miss snack time for some reason, it’s better to bring their next meal forward rather than allowing them to have a snack too close to meal time.

Straight Facts on Scoliosis By Dr. Allen Bonilla DC (USA)
To most parents’ minds, the word scoliosis is tinged with terror. Images of deformity, ridicule and bulky orthopaedic braces immediately spring to mind. If pressed for details however, most would be short on words when it comes to describing what scoliosis is. Like stagflation and transfats, we might not know exactly what it is but we know that it’s not good. Well with that in mind, let’s clear the air with some facts. Scoliosis is defined as an abnormal curvature of the spine of greater than 10 degrees and can also involve abnormal rotation of the vertebrae (spinal bones). There are many different types of scolioses with some actually considered to be more normal than no curvature at all! Although a minor amount of curvature in the spine needn’t necessarily be a cause for alarm, some scolioses will progress with time which definitely warrants concern. Factors which may affect the chances of progression include the child’s age, their gender (girls tend to be affected more than boys), and the type of scoliosis present. In rarer cases,

curvature of the spine may be an indication of more severe underlying pathology. In studies, moderate and severe curvatures of the spine have been associated with increased incidences of low-back pain, visceral (organ) disturbances - especially of the heart and lungs, and even early death. Less measurable though certainly noteworthy are the cosmetic and psychological effects. The cause(s) of scoliosis are oft disputed and not well known. Many believe that among other causes, spinal misalignments at a young age may be a contributing factor. What is known is that early detection of the disorder offers the best chances for successful management. Although some signs of scoliosis are obvious - look for uneven shoulders or hips, or a rib hump with forward bending, this is no substitution for a professional examination by a qualified health professional. Last month my mom and our vet “Sam” went and saw a horse that was very sick and had not been looked after very well. So they brought him back to our place. “Scoobie” was very special, but needed lots of care. He had not been fed and was starving to death. He also could not stand very well by himself and would fall over, than we had to get a lot of people to help him stand by himself. I love “Scoobie” he is very special and has kind gentle eyes.

While my mom and Sam where looking at Scoobie there was also two other horses there who needed good homes. So “Rosie” a mare and “Leo” a 5mth old colt also came to live at our house. While they are still in need of a lot of care they are very special and I love having them at home. BULLETIN #11 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.
and louder, with the vibrations in the water making the singing sound enormous! “It’s working, LOOK!” pointed Trent, towards the Rozinators headquarters.
FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS! Bulletin: Part Xi
Last Edition: Without warning appeared CC, the Cairns Crusader. “Hi there Boppers!” Greeted CC. “I intercepted a broken distress message from you guys and had to come and help!” stated CC. “Thank god you’re here CC!” exclaimed Bree, “I thought you were still on holidays? Anyway, that doesn’t matter now, we need your assistance! The gruesome Rozinators are trying to steal our oceans and marine life!” uttered Bree. “No worries!” announced CC, “I have a plan!” With that, CC scooted off into the deep blue sea, within seconds, he had returned. “When I was on holidays, I ran into a rogue Rozinator, Bob, who was fed up with his species taking over other planets oceans and escaped, landing on Earth.” Explained CC. “Wow!” stated Eleese, mesmerised by the beauty of CC. “So what are we going to do?” quivered Trent, still hiding in the corner. “Well, I had to quickly scoot off to catch up with my Rozinator friend, Bob, and asked him if he could help.” Clarified CC. “And what did he say?” asked Bree, anxiously waiting for a solution. CC quickly replied “The Rozinators have a weakness!”
It really was working, as all the Rozinators began rolling around on the ocean floor, seemingly in agony. “Quickly, do it now CC!” yelled Eleese, ready for the next step in the plan. With that CC quickly grabbed his special lasso and tied up all of the foul creatures. There plan had worked! All of the beasts were captured and taken away for investigation and the Great Barrier Reef was now safe thanks to the Boppers and the help of the Cairns Crusader. CC and the Boppers say, Remember keep our oceans clean and DON’T LITTER!
“What is it? What is it?” asked Trent, as he bounced with excitement. “They CAN’T stand SINGING!!!” explained CC, “Especially the sound of a group singing!” All three boppers were amazed at this fantastic news. “We can all sing!” announced Eleese, stating the obvious. “Yes, we can and I have the perfect song to do the job.” Bree declared. With that, the Boppers and CC formulated an ingenious plan to stop the evil Rozinators from taking over the ocean. This plan needed to work and quickly or else it could be the end of the reef as we know it! Trent started yelling out the Head Rozinator, immediately getting his attention. Slowly the blob shuffled over near the cage and Bree yelled out, “NOW!” The Boppers started to sing, “S.T.A.R, you can be a Bopstar! S.T.A.R, let’s all dance and have some fun! S.T.A.R…” Then CC joined in, causing the singing to become louder

The Pevensie siblings return to Narnia, where they are enlisted to once again help ward off an evil king and restore the rightful heir to the land’s throne, Prince Caspian. The movie is probably more suitable to a slightly older audience then its prequel, Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, however, this is a great movie with a lot of action and adventure. STOMP STOMP STOMP! Elephants - a protected species! Elephants are amazingly large, beautiful creatures and there are today, two living species: the African Elephant and the Asian Elephant (also known as the Indian Elephant). Over time and varying climatic conditions, other species have become extinct. Mammoths are the best-known of these elephants and died off since the last ice age. Elephants are the largest land animals alive today and when giving birth, instead of nine months like humans, the elephant’s gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth, it is common for an elephant calf to weigh 120 kilograms (260 lb). The smallest elephants, about the size of a calf or a large pig, were a prehistoric species that lived on the island of Crete during the Pleistocene epoch. The elephant has appeared in cultures across the world. They are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence. Aristotle once said the elephant was “the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind.

Musical babies By Elaine Seager
Most mums are aware of the benefits of playing soothing music during pregnancy. It’s calming for the mother and it often has a noticeable affect on the baby too. And, it’s been proven that babies remember the music and sounds they heard in the womb well in to later life and that they have a marked preference for this familiar music even as a one year old. So what are the benefits of continuing to expose our babies to music once they’re out of the womb? The most obvious benefit is to help them sleep. Newborn babies are used to hearing lots of sounds from inside the womb and soft bedtime music (especially lullaby’s) has been shown to help them relax and fall asleep more easily because this creates an environment they’re more familiar with than a silent room. In addition to this, most of us instinctively know that babies respond positively to songs (if my daughter is screaming in the car seat a quick round of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ always does wonders). But not only can they be used as a mood changer, your endless repetitions of Twinkle Twinkle are actually helping their mental, physical and social development. Nursery rhymes in particular help children to learn language because the words are broken
down into syllables and sounds in a form of language play. This is helped even more of you accompany them with actions like clapping or banging on percussion instruments in time with the rhythm. Babies love to imitate these sounds and it’s no accident that many nursery rhymes are repetitious (Baa Baa Black Sheep, Row Row Row the Boat etc). Repetition helps them learn language (so remember this the next time you want to jump out the window after your 77th rendition of a song!) Research also shows that playing music to babies in the womb and in the early years of life helps build the neural pathways in the brain which thoughts and information travel along. When a baby is born the neurons in the brain are largely unconnected and exposure to different stimuli help their brains to develop and speed up mental development. continued overleaf...

pak babies - Musical babies - continued... What sort of music should you play to your babies? Many people believe that classical music stimulates the brain in a way that helps educational and emotional development but opinion is divided. It’s known as the Mozart Effect, a theory which is credited with boosting IQ, improving health, strengthening family ties and even producing the occasional child prodigy. Whether or not classical music has these benefits, the reality is, that playing any music to your child is good for them and that introducing them to new types of music causes them to use different parts of the brain (this idea is suggested to ‘seniors’ to help curtail memory loss).
Johnson, author of ‘How to give your child a musical headstart’ runs Music for Tots classes. She has taught and performed music for many years and has been widely publicised on TV and other media (she used to e the compere of Here’s Humphrey). Music is Fun! At the end of the day all the research is very interesting but more importantly, music is just fun. Even if you just decide to be musical at home, its great for creative expression and a wonderful way for parents to interact and bond in a fun way with their kids.
Developing babies Musical Talents If you want to take your child’s musical development further than singing nursery rhymes at home and banging on saucepans there are a couple of local businesses in Cairns that have music programmes for babies. Nicole Donnelly runs local Kindermusik programmes (go to www. kmusikcairns.com for more information) and Connie
Summertime Tropical Baby Tips The summer heat is back so here’s a reminder about ways to keep your littlies safe and healthy: sunlight: Babies under 6 months are best kept out of direct sunlight altogether (especially between 10am-4pm) sunscreens: sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months because they will get a relatively high ‘dose’ of the chemicals in the cream ver and also because it may impair their ability to cool off by sweating. over 6 months of age use SpF30 on babies and toddlers on exposed skin whenever they go outside Clothing: Dress them in light clothing to prevent over-heating shade: Use a sunshade on the pram/stroller and avoid walking in direct sunlight as much as possible Hats: Always put their hat on even when sitting in the shade outside (they can still get sunburnt in the shade) sunnies: Start getting them to wear sunnies as soon as possible Drinking: Babies have a greater risk of dehydration so it’s important to keep them hydrated with regular drinks. Breastfed babies will need more top up feeds (with foremilk as a thirst quencher). Formula fed babies will need to drink additional plain water from a bottle. Are they all yours? “When I grow up I’m going to have ten kids!” I still remember speaking those ‘famous’ words over twenty years ago. Whilst most kids were planning on becoming lawyers or doctors, I was dreaming about becoming a Mum. I knew I wanted lots of children and I wanted to have them young. Luckily for me I met my husband early enough for both of my dreams to become reality. Today at 31 I am a proud stay at home Mum to six fantastic kids. My husband and I have five sons ranging in age from 13 years down to nearly 3. Our only daughter is 9 months old and she has bought such a gentleness and joy to our home. Our house is chaotic, messy, noisy and always on the go. I have become the Queen of multi-tasking. Shopping, cooking, washing clothes are momentous events that take much planning and organisation and are never fully completed. Just when I think I’m finally on top of all the housework, I dread asking the kids to clean their rooms, because inevitably, when they look under their beds I’ll have at least another 3 loads of washing to do. Other people are often bemused by my brood of children. I remember one morning I had to take all the kids for an out-of-hour’s trip to the emergency room when my eldest son had a suspected broken thumb. I was expecting to have to wait and so I came prepared since there’s nothing more stressful then six bored children jumping all over the waiting room or pushing the fold up chairs up and

down, up and down. We had the pram and two bags. One bag had the toys and colouring-in pencils and my five year old’s favourite colouring in ‘books’ (note, I said books the plural, we must bring all the favourites). In the other bag I had food and drinks. They had already eaten breakfast, and I knew we would be back home in time for morning tea, so I just took extra supplies in case of sudden starving hunger and an urge to raid the vending machines. On top of all this I also had the baby bag with all the other baby essentials. Eventually my son’s name was called and I started organising the children to go into the triage room. We were busy finding shoes, putting toys back into the bags and picking up the food that had been eaten because, of course, they were starving hungry. Finally I was ushering them all into the room and we all piled in to find places to sit and begin to settle down for the consultation. The nurse watches all this and looks at us with a bemused expression on her face. She finally asks “Are these all your children?”. There was a part of me that wanted to ask her why anybody in their right mind would want to bring six children to the hospital at 7.30 in the morning if they didn’t have to, but then I looked around at the gorgeous faces of my six babies and I answered with a smile “Yes, they are all mine” .

Happy Camping by the side of the Mulgrave River
By Luke McGregor
The world’s financial markets might be in chaos and you might not be feeling quite so flush if you own shares but it’s still important to get away from it all and forget all about the doom and gloom for a while. If hotels are out of the question these days there’s always the option of getting back to nature with a camping trip! We are lucky in FNQ to have lots of diverse countryside around us and plenty of places to camp for free or for a minimal fee. There’s the Atherton Tablelands (i.e. Tinaroo Dam), Daintree, and of course, Gordonvale! Right in our own backyard, the Mulgrave River has many spots along the river to set up camp and enjoy the beautiful waters. But BEWARE: Make sure that the location does not have Crocodiles and is a safe location to camp. We left home for our trip on a Saturday morning and it took us about 45mins to get to the bottom of the Mulgrave River. We decided to spend a little while driving around, checking out the camping spots and having a few cool dips along the way. As we reached the top of the Mulgrave River, the road turned into dirt and we continued driving until we reached the Mulgrave Camping Site. If you’re not fond of squatting in nature with a shovel and toilet paper close to hand, then this location is great. It has plenty of facilities such as toilets, tables and BBQ’s and you can hear the rapids from the river. This is a great
40
spot to camp but due to us having some little terrors with us (the dogs); we weren’t able to camp here so we decided to trek back along the road, away from the national park. After some searching, we found the perfect spot with clear waters and only the occasional march fly! After unloading the car and setting up the tent and table, we thought this would be a great time for a swim to cool off. The water was amazing! Not too much current to sweep the dogs away but enough to keep the water crystal clear and the campsite was only metres from the water. With the rest of the afternoon to do as we pleased, we laid about, read books, played cards and really, just got back to basics. The best thing about camping is the versatility! You can pretty much set up camp anywhere and the costs are minimal.
www.pakmag.com.au
Left: Mulgrave River, right next to the camping site. Far Left: Tent, guitar and clothes (the essentials‌) Bottom: Charlie the terror.
That night we snuggled by the camp fire, roasted a few marshmallows and slept soundly under the beautiful starry sky. In the morning, bacon, sausages and eggs were on the menu and another swim to bath was inevitable. After packing up the camp site and having our last swim for the trip, we all bundled into the car and drove home completely relaxed. I really couldn’t think of a better way to spend a summer weekend. Get out and get camping! If you know of any camping spots around Cairns or have a story to tell about your own camping adventure, then send the story with some pictures to info@pakmag.com.au and you may see your camping trip in the next month of PAK Mag. Thanks and happy camping!

a trip to...
Royal Flying Doctors A daytrip with a 10 minute drive-time!
Daytrips don’t always have to involve long travelling times and, assuming you live in Cairns, we have an aviation tourist mecca right here on our doorstep. Cairns is home to the busiest Royal Flying Doctors Service in Australia which provides medical and emergency care to communities covering a huge area all across the Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands. It’s a vitally important service and this year, in it’s 80th anniversary year, it is just as much relied upon by the outback as it was when it was first founded in Cloncurry in 1928. Back then, its founder the Rev. John Flynn, had a ‘travelling church’ but realised that people really wanted a doctor more than God and now it has become a national lifeline to those who live in the bush. The RFDS Visitors Centre attracts tourists from all over the world who are fascinated by the history of this unique service and how it operates. For anybody interested in medicine or aviation this centre is a must-see attraction but it’s equally as important for Australians to know the important work they do and to support it so that it can continue to serve remote communities. Nestled in a quiet corner of leafy Edge Hill, the visitors centre is easily forgotten because it’s slightly off the beaten track but it’s a great excuse to spend a day in a nearby suburb. And, since it’s an all-weather facility it’s worth remembering on days when you want to avoid excessive sunshine or rain. The cost for adults is $6 ($3 for children over 5 and $4.50 for seniors) and it includes an interesting talk about the organisation followed by a 10 minute movie presentation which gives you a great overview of what the RFDS is all about. Afterwards you can browse the museum at your leisure and the kids will be fascinated by climbing aboard the old aircraft.
42
A visit to the centre lasts approx. 45 minutes. Afterwards there is plenty of shaded ground outside for a picnic or alternatively you can try one of the great cafés in Edge Hill village for lunch or make your way to the Botanical Gardens. Remember the RFDS is a free service to those people who need it and the organisation is only partly funded by the government. It relies on the good will of corporate sponsors and people like you who go to visit!

Keeping your dogs safe through summer As the summer temperatures begin to soar your pets will need a little attention since, just like your human family, the heat can endanger the lives of our furry family members too. Summer brings with it some specific hazards to be aware of – sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Dogs are just as at risk of sunburn and to protect them you should apply the same common sense we apply to ourselves. Keep them in the shade when the rays are at their most intense (10am-4pm) and apply some sunblock to their exposed areas such as the tip of their nose and ears (baby sunblock is great). Dogs with a lighter coat are more vulnerable so pay attention and if you notice any sun damage, consult a vet. Every summer I am always asked the same question: To shave or not to shave?! It’s a controversial subject. Many believe that the dogs natural coat provides insulation from the heat and keeps them cooler. Personally, it always seems to me that the hair just makes them hotter, dirtier and more difficult to maintain. I have seen dogs panting excessively and barely able to walk but once I’ve clipped them and given them a refreshing bath and blow dry it gives
them a whole new lease of life. My clients with longhaired dogs seem to agree that shaving makes them cooler. Ultimately it’s a personal preference so take your time to chat with a vet or professional groomer before you make your decision. Other ways to ensure your dog remains comfortable during summer is to make sure they always have access to water and shade. Choose a ceramic or plastic water bowl (metal ones absorb the heat and make the water undrinkable) and create a space where they can go to cool down. Use your imagination - a babies paddling pool with 1 inch of water in it is a great way for them to jump in and cool down whenever they want. Also, buy an above ground bed to allow the breeze to circulate under it. A little bit of common sense will make sure your dogs come through summer in good health. And, if you’re really worried about them, why not drop them in to one of our centres for some air-conditioned doggy daycare!

EZY PAK Mag Christmas Cards by William Anthony
Ever thought about making your own unique Christmas cards for a change? We asked Mel Andrews from Paper Possibilities to use her scrap-booking creative genius to show us how to make our very own Christmas cards. To begin making these cards, all you need is the following: - A4 sheets of white card - Patterned paper - Thin double-sided tape. - Thick double-sided tape, to give a raised/layered effect. - Rub-on paper with words (like transfer paper) - Decorative embellishments, i.e. paper flowers, self-adhesive pearls, etc. - Ribbon - Scissors Step 1: Cut, Cut, Cut…Action! Cut an A4 sheet of white card in half, and then fold the card in half again. Step 2: Patterns! Take a piece of patterned paper and cut so that it is just slightly smaller than the folded card to make a background. Stick this background paper to the card using double-sided tape. Take another piece of decorated paper (we used words in this example) and stick it to the background paper using raised double-sided tape to give it a raised effect. Step 3: Rub it on! Use rub-on paper to add another word (this is like transfer paper) Step 4: Lets make it pretty! Now add extra embellishments – we used paper flowers decorated with self-adhesive pearls in the centres. These were stuck to the card with raised sticky tape. Step 5: You’re nearly done! Add ribbon for extra decoration. Tuck in underneath the raised paper, secure it with sticky tape and tie off over the top in a bow. Use sticky tape to also fix the bow in position. Step 6: Jewels and Pearls! Finish off by adding a jewelled star and some more pearls and you have just finished your very own, hand made, Christmas card! There you have it, the PaK Mag Xmas Card! If you have any tips or photos of your own DIY project, please send them into trent@pakmag.com.au and you may see your project in the next issue. Cheers and Happy DIYing!

Skateboarding By Bridie Zell
Skateboarding is taking the world by storm. Whether you see it as a sport or a hobby, skateboarding has come a long way since its development in the 1950’s. There are now more than 18.5 million skateboarders world wide, and we are seeing skate parks pop up in even the most remote places. It is even on the verge of becoming an Olympic sport and more and more children are becoming attracted to this activity, particularly those who prefer individual sports and enjoy taking risks. Skateboarding originally began in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s as an alternative to surfing, and was also known as “sidewalk surfing”. The advancement in design of both boards and wheels has allowed skateboarding styles to develop over the decades, from “sidewalk surfing” to vertical ramps and street skating. The current generation of skateboards is dominated by street skating. Is your child interested in skateboarding? Here’s what you need: - A skateboard (consisting of the deck, griptape, trucks, wheels and bearings) - A good pair of skateboarding shoes allows for better communication with your board, although any closed, flat soled shoes would suffice. - Safety gear (inc. helmet, knee pads and elbow pads). Most of these items are available from a number of sports and surf shops in Cairns, however, Compound is Cairns’ only exclusive skate shop where staff can offer experienced advice. Safety gear is not only highly recommended for beginners for preventing physical injury but also because it

can provide psychological reassurance (for both child and parents!). Another way to ensure they enjoy the sport safely is to invest in some skateboarding lessons. Cairns is home to the Skate Method Skateboarding Academy where coach, Adam Walker, offers classes to develop skateboarding skills in a safe and neutral setting. To find out more call: (07) 4057 9806 or 0422 218029 (Email: skatemethod@live.com.au) So where can you skate in Cairns? One of the most popular parks is the Esplanade facility, which is actually one of the biggest, most unique skate parks in Australia. There are also a number of skate parks around the Cairns region including Trinity Beach, Redlynch, Mossman, and Atherton. Schools are an ideal place to skate, however, issues of vandalism and destruction may arise, so it is important to get permission. Skate facilities provided by councils can be a dangerous place for newcomers. This is mainly because beginner skaters and non-skaters are not aware of basic park etiquette, and can get in the way of other skaters. Experienced skaters will often skate in “lines”, which are pre-planned run of tricks incorporating several obstacles or areas of the skate park, including room for run up and landing. If a skater rides in front of another skater who has begun their line, stopping them from doing their tricks, this is called “snaking” and will be looked down upon by other riders. Therefore, it very important for less experienced skaters and spectators to observe the lines taken by those experienced skateboarders before entering into the facility. Go Skateboarding Day was created in 2004 by a group of skateboarding companies to promote skateboarding and help make it more noticeable to the world. It is celebrated every year on June 21st.

eating out
Outback Jacks If he wants a satisfying stack of ribs and she wants a nice homemade salad or chicken dish, Outback Jacks Bar & Grill will definitely cater for either appetite. Feeling very hungry from a big day at work, I was very tempted to order the famous 1kg steak challenge, where you could win a T-shirt and have it for half price if you ate it in 30mins! However, with some concerning looks from the wife, I decided to get the Neptune Rump, which I must add, was delicious. As we perused the menu, we were very pleased to see such a range of dishes, with entrees starting at $6, salads ranging from around $14 and mains starting from $22, which I thought was quite reasonable. Another great feature to the Outback service was the kids menu set at a price of $7.95 and the kids’ room, with chalkboard walls, games and colouring in facilities. After some debate, we ordered the Calamari and Bruschetta for entrée, the wife decided on the High Country Rib Eye Pork, my son decided on the Jack’ Rack of Ribs and I chose the Neptune Rump. I must say, I was glad to be hungry because when the meals came out, they were quite large. I had soon engulfed my rump with prawns and avocado, the pork was cooked to perfection and the ribs definitely needed the supplied bib.
into Grandma’s Apple Pie, I knew I had made the right decision. I must say I am an apple pie fanatic and the Outback’s apple pie was delicious. Unfortunately, the night had to end and an overall satisfaction was felt by the whole family. The atmosphere, the cheerful staff and most importantly the food, was great. QUANTUM OF SOLACE continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (DANIEL CRAIG) in CASINO ROYALE. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (JUDI DENCH) interrogate Mr White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined. Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation. On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.

time for a break After about four minutes in the examination room, she started screaming and ran down the hall.
One day a father gets out of work and on his way home he suddenly remembers that it’s his daughter’s birthday. He pulls over to a toy Shop and asks the sales person, “How much for one of those Barbie’s in the display window?”
An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story.
The salesperson answers, “Which one do you mean, Sir? We have:
