It was just the boost I needed after 9 years of hard work, so thanks again to all the judges, sponsors and wonderful group of women who are on the committee. I strongly urge all women who either work for a business or have their own business to join the club, it’s great for networking and meeting likeminded women. Focus on kids: Mike Friganotis from the Family Relationship Centre, explains how their ‘Focus On Kids’ Program helps separating parents Separation can be the most difficult, and emotional time a family can go through. Parents often feel intense grief, experiencing the loss of a spouse, the loss of the family lifestyle and familiar patterns, and the loss of the “white picket fence” dream. This experience tends to go hand in hand with a rollercoaster of other intense emotions, including fear and anger. It’s a rollercoaster you didn’t buy a ticket for! Conflict unfortunately is the norm, rather than the exception. For many parents these overwhelming emotions can be debilitating, affecting their ability to function at work and home, and also their ability to parent. Too often parents experiencing the pain and conflict of separation lose sight of the welfare and happiness of their children, who may be caught in the middle of the estranged relationship. Research shows that how well conflict is managed by parents will determine the extent to which children are able to recover emotionally from the separation, and move on with their lives. Children may experience the same range of emotions during separation as their parents. However, they may not have the self-awareness or the words to know what or how to describe what they’re feeling. It is not the separation, but the ongoing conflict that hurts children in the long term. The way children behave is usually a sign of what they are feeling and aren’t able to tell you in words. The Cairns Family Relationship Centre provides an 8-week program (two and a half hours per week) called Focus On Kids to help parents successfully navigate separation. During the program parents are provided with information and support about post-separation parenting, the impact of parental conflict
www.pakmag.com.au
on children, communication, and making co-parenting work for children. They are also given the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences, and to develop new skills and strategies to manage the often difficult and challenging situations that separation and parenting apart can bring. After all, adults have had little or no formal training in child rearing, especially in the case of separation, and children do not come with a manual. The statistics show about 40% of Australian families go through separation, with the number slowly on the increase. However, it is still one of society’s taboos, only discussed behind closed doors. People only find out about friends and families’ separations well after the fact, when the parents have been going through the grief and trauma on their own. Therefore one of the main aims of the Focus on Kids program is to help parents make contact with others who are also going through separation, to reduce the isolation that can occur and for them to be comforted by knowing they’re not alone. The Focus On Kids Program views the process of parenting and co-parenting from the child’s perspective. Parents are given help to understand their child’s reaction to separation and taught skills to assist their child through the process. It also provides a safe, supportive environment for parents themselves where they can share their stories and express their worries, fears and concerns as well as their hopes for the future.
One of the most important topics covered in the program is communication skills since poor communication can have a huge impact on parenting through separation, causing emotional hurt, misunderstanding and inflamed hostility between parents. Good communication skills enable parents to minimise conflict and resolve it more effectively when it does arise. It also allows parents to be able to negotiate with each other more constructively. Parents can do many things to help their children during this difficult time. They can encourage their children to build strong friendship networks, seek assistance when they need it, and assist others in need. They can praise more than criticise – children who are loved and supported learn to express positive emotions to others. They can encourage their children to achieve academic or sporting success – those who develop their individual talents are more likely to feel able to deal with stressful times in their lives. By adopting healthy eating habits, regular exercise and adequate sleep, they can protect their children against the stress of tough situations. And, by having routines, children can develop their organisational skills. If you think you could do with some help in co-operative co-parenting, then Focus On Kids is for you! Focus On Kids runs weekdays in every school term in Cairns, Atherton, and Innisfail. Book now, call (07) 4041 6063.

Hi-5 Surprise! The hottest tickets in town
Following on from their recent new series on Channel 9, Hi-5 are due to embark on a national tour of Australia in the new year and will be in Cairns performing at the Civic Theatre on 27 & 28 March. And, for anyone under the age of 8 they are obviously the hottest tickets in town. Hi-5 was created in 1998 by Helena Harris after her own two children outgrew her other creation, Bananas in Pajamas. She decided that her new show would be aimed at 2-8 year olds and would educate through music and games. Since then, after a decade of entertaining pint-sized fans, Hi-5 have become one of Australia’s biggest entertainment exports and the TV shows are now screened in 220 countries around the world. It has been estimated that in an average week a global audience of one million children is tuning in to sing and dance along to Hi-5. They have also won several awards including 5 ARIA awards for
www.pakmag.com.au
best children’s album as well as 3 Logie Awards for the TV show. But over the last 2 years or so, Hi-5 have undergone some major changes with all the original cast members leaving to pursue other interests – some to settle down and have families, others to try their luck at going solo. But while the faces may have changed, Hi-5 will still be around for at least another 4-5 years having just committed to Channel 9 to broadcast 5 new series. After 10 years in business and as a result of all these changes the producers decided the time was right to transform the show to reinvigorate them with new material and a new look and feel. So, who are the new Hi-5 members? The Hi-5 team now includes Stevie Nicholson who replaced Tim Harding in 2007, Casey Burgess who replaced Kellie Crawford in 2008 and the newest
members who joined this year after a lengthy audition process, Fely Irvine, Tim Madden and Lauren Brant. They are all accomplished singers, dancers and actors who have appeared in various stage shows as well as acting gigs on TV. And, not surprisingly, they’re all delighted to be given the opportunity to join an already successful entertaining juggernaut. Hi-5 Surprise! is the name of the new show coming to Cairns and sees the cast members planning a special surprise party for their friend Chat’s birthday. Of course, it will include lots of singing, dancing, games and fun and lots of audience interaction. So, grab your party hat and dancing shoes and get on down to the Civic Theatre to work your dance grooves! Hi-5 Surprise! will appear at Cairns Civic Theatre on 27 & 28 March. I’m dreaming of a cashed up Xmas By Bree James
(i) Use coupons
For most of us Christmas is a fairly expensive affair and unfortunately it’s unlikely that Kevin Rudd will be sending us Christmas bonuses again this year. So, we thought we’d put our heads together and create a list of ideas for finding some quick extra cash for Christmas. And, since this is a great opportunity to teach the kids about money, make sure you get everyone involved as a family.
(j) Get organised and make sure you only buy what you need instead of doubling up.
Ways to Save Money Every penny counts so start by looking for ways that you can save some cash: (1)
Hire DVD’s on a Tuesday for $1 instead of going to the cinema (or, if you’re going to the cinema, go on a cheap Tuesday too).
(2) Make your Christmas cards instead of buying them. (3) Make your own Christmas gifts.
(7) Eat before you go so you buy with your head and not your stomach! (8) Use lunchboxes with compartments so you don’t need to waste money on gladwrap. (9) Avoid giving money away to banks: (a) Avoid late payment fees by arranging to pay bills by direct debit or make a note in your diary. (b) Use your own banks ATM’s. (c) Shop around for cheaper interest credit cards or ask your current provider for a lower rate. (10) Walk more often to save on petrol. (11) Buy your Xmas gifts online.
(4) Decide if you really need Austar!
(12) Cook at least one vegetarian meal a week – healthy and cheaper.
(5) Stretch out the time between haircuts.
(13) Fill up your car on Tuesdays.
(6) Get smarter with your shopping:
(14) Use a toy library and borrow books & magazines from the Cairns Library.
(a) Plan your meals weekly so you only buy what your need.
(15) Look for ways to reduce your bills:
(b) Always take a shopping list. (c) Buy extras when your usual groceries are on special. (d) Buy generic brands. (e) Ask the kids if there are some ‘treats’ that they can go without so the family can save. (f) Say no when your kids throw extra things in the trolley (or try not to take them at all). (g) Shop at the supermarket on Fridays. (h) Avoid the middle aisles where all the unnecessary nibbles are.
www.pakmag.com.au
(a) Look for cheaper mobile plans. (b) Go green to save on energy bills (c) Shop around for car insurance. (16) Take a packed lunch to work (and don’t buy coffees).
Ways to Generate Cash (1)
The first thing to do is start thinking abundantly. Carry a $100 note around in your wallet or purse and mentally make a note of all the things you could spend it on without actually spending it! The trick is to just get in to the feeling of being wealthy so that more is attracted to you (if you haven’t tried this before,
prepare to be amazed at where money can suddenly appear from). (2)
Join up to websites that pay you in cash or products to do surveys: www.RewardsCentral.com.au, www.myopinions.com.au, www.FreeParentStuff.com.au, www.AustraliaSurveyPanel.com, www.FreeCompetitions.com.au
(3)
Have a spring clean/de-clutter weekend and sell everything you don’t need on Ebay or other sites like www.kidspot.com.au (for baby stuff). There’s also loads of local buy and sell sites like www.cairnstrader.com, www.cairnssecondhandonline.com.au, www.babysecondhand.com.au which can save you some postage. Or maybe you have enough to hold a garage sale. Every family has at least $500 sat around in the house not being used.
(4) Volunteer to gift wrap other people’s pressies for a gold coin. (5)
Bake some goodies, wrap them nicely and sell them to work colleagues, friends, family and neighbours (or offer to cook for other people’s kids parties).
(6) Offer to baby sit (an invaluable service in the run up to Christmas). (7) Offer to dog sit, walk other people’s dogs or offer to feed or groom them (and the kids can help with this too). (8) Do some cleaning or ironing jobs. (9) Offer to house sit, water plants, collect mail for people on holidays. (10) Go around and offer to clean gutters and gardens. After last years dengue outbreak you’ll be doing a service for the community at the same time as generating cash. (11) Get an extra casual/seasonal job. Many stores hire (part-time and full time) seasonal employees. In addition to the Christmas cash you will earn,
11
I’m dreaming of a cashed up Xmas - continued... your employer may offer store discounts on merchandise. (12) Pick fruit. If you’re up for a physical challenge bananas are considered one of the most reliable sources for fruit-picking work in Australia. Try www.bananabarracks.com. (13) Sell all used books on Amazon.com (14) Sign up to become a secret shopper try www.themysteryshopper.com.au (15) Sign up to sell Avon, Nutrimetics, Tupperware, Candles etc (16) Rent out a spare room in your house – try foreign exchange students (17) If you are an expert at Maths, Science, English or other school subjects tutor kids in the lead up to the end of term. (18) Offer your services as a hired helper – you could run errands, do grocery shopping, pick up mail, fill in Xmas cards or cook meals for busy people. (19) Start a market stall – there are several markets around Cairns, some of
12
them you can do car boot sales, sell crafts, homemade items, foods and second hand goods. Check out our what’s on guide and contact them direct for terms and pricing.
Ideas for the kids (1)
Hold a car wash on your street and encourage your neighbours to allow you to wash their car once a fortnight. Make sure you follow water restrictions and wash on the lawn.
(2)
Wash windows – it’s been very dusty lately so the outsides of our houses are really dirty. Get a bucket and a squidgy and you’re ready to go.
(3) Ask around for some light gardening or lawn mowing jobs. (4)
Go Busking – it’s free to get a license from the Inner City Facilities office on the Esplanade and tourists love to see kids showcasing their talents. The kids will need about 30 minutes of music, dance, or a show and can stay up to 2 hours in the one spot. Some talented buskers earn up to $70 per hour.
(5)
Offer a helping hand - there are lots of mums, dads and grandparents who could use an extra pair of hands hanging out washing etc.
(6) Sell works of art, homemade cooking and decorations to family and friends. (7)
Recycle - collect cans, iron, aluminium and any household material like taps, tap fittings and sheet metal. Mum or Dad will need to go with you. For more information call Onesteel Recycling on Comport Street on (07) 4048 9441.
(8)
Get a worm and bait business going. If you live near an area where people do a lot of fishing, kids can earn money by collecting and selling bait. Worms are probably the easiest type of bait to catch, but many insects also make good fishing bait.
(9)
Sell produce. If your home has fruit or nut trees, kids can earn spending money by gathering and selling them. Set up a table by the roadside or fill plastic produce bags and sell door-to-door.

Communication Styles: School drop outs are not necessarily slow on the uptake Visual These people process information in pictures or images and consequently make good spellers. They are very often thin and wiry in build and speak very quickly in a higher pitched voice. They struggle to remember verbal instructions because their mind tends to wander and they need to see something to understand it. They will use visual language like “I see what you mean” or “I get the picture” which literally reflects what’s going on in their head.
Auditory Auditory communicators process information in sounds and they can repeat things back to you easily. They typically talk to themselves a lot and are easily distracted by noise. They learn by listening and love music and talking on the phone. They need to hear what you say about things to learn and will use language like “clear as a bell” or “I hear what you’re saying”.
Kinaesthetic By Elaine Seager Have you ever met or worked with someone that you just couldn’t connect with and no matter how hard you tried you always seemed to misunderstand one another? This is because we all have very different ways of communicating, learning and processing information and each approach literally has a language of its own. Those people that you seem to click with easily are probably talking your language whereas those you don’t may as well be speaking Arabic. This is important to know if you happen to have a child who is finding school or a particular teacher a struggle. A few years ago I was doing some volunteer work in a Youth DropIn Centre helping young adults find employment. Perhaps not surprisingly most of the people who used this service were your stereotypical school drop-out’s. Many of them had struggled through school and come out the other end with little or no qualifications and yet I was struck by the fact that these were not dumb kids. In fact, many of them showed amazing talent. What all of them had in common was that their preferred communication style was kinaesthetic and this is the style that is very often not well catered for in schools. What does this mean? There are 4 styles of communicating that people use: 1) visual 2) auditory 3) kinaesthetic and 4) auditory digital, and each one has it’s own language.
www.pakmag.com.au
Kinaesthetics process information through touch, feeling or senses and they very often excel at art or sport. They need to do things in order to learn. This might include walking through something or having discussion around subjects etc. They will not get a new concept until they’ve had the opportunity to do something physical to get a feeling for it. Kinaesthetics often talk and move very slowly – this is because the process of actually getting a feeling for things takes time. They use words like sense, heavy, hard and grasp and phrases like “he’s gone cold on me”.
Auditory Digital These people are similar to auditory but their world is based on language and words so they don’t pick up on tones of voice so much. They generally speak in a clipped, crisp monotone voice and they need to know that things are logical and make sense. Kevin Rudd is typical of this style particularly when he’s under stress and uses big words and complicated sentences. None of this has anything to do with IQ and no one style is more effective than another. They are just different. But it’s important to know this if your child is struggling with a particular teacher. Typical classrooms predominantly use visual and auditory methods to teach which are hopeless for kinaesthetics. Hopefully most teachers are now aware of this and have the flexibility to adapt their teaching for different children but it makes it a difficult job and under stress most will resort to their own default style.

Are cosmetics putting our daughters at risk? A 2008 EWG (Environmental Working Group) report shows 9 out of 10 girls are wearing makeup regularly by the time they are 14. By Susan Dillicar In fact, the number of girls aged 11 to 14 who use makeup every day has doubled in two years! Yet young girls are most vulnerable to the chemicals in makeup - many of which are linked to breast cancer - during the years when their bodies are developing. The cosmetics industry has been increasingly targeting our daughters over the last decade, with a range of cutesy products designed for young girls. A look at many of the cosmetics aimed at girls, however, will quickly reveal an alarming range of ingredients with unpronounceable names (which usually means chemicals). Do a bit more research and you will find that there are ingredients like phthalates which are linked to breast cancer, birth deformation, asthma and early puberty. You will also find lead, formaldehyde and other harmful ingredients. Many of the ingredients in makeup and skin care products mimic the effect of oestrogen. This is of great concern, because it is widely accepted amongst scientists that it is the increased exposure to oestrogen in our environment that has lead to the rise in breast cancer over the last 50 years. (Breast Cancer Network (NZ) report, 2006)
Strategies for protecting our daughters from the chemicals in cosmetics

[1] The first thing to do is start reading labels, particularly the ingredients list. As a rule of thumb, if you can’t pronounce it - don’t buy it! Be suspicious: Words like “natural” or “hypoallergenic” look reassuring, but they may well be misleading. [2] Educate yourself and your daughters. There is a lot of information on the net about chemicals in cosmetics. A good place to start is at www.SafeCosmetics.org [3] Try making your own cosmetics and skin care products. You don’t have to pay a fortune for good skincare products; you can easily make natural products in your kitchen, which are often better for your skin than anything you can buy in the shop. Teach her how to make lip glosses, face masks and bubble baths in just a few minutes, knowledge that will save her a lot of money down the track. [4] Shop in places that sell organic and natural products. Health stores often have natural cosmetics and skin care products, but again, read the labels carefully. Just because products are in a health store does not mean they are free of harmful chemicals. [5] Limit you and your daughter’s overall exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals. While our
bodies have an inherent ability to get rid of excess oestrogen, many of the man made compounds can’t be broken down and end up accumulating in the body. One way to reduce the load on our bodies is to use glass containers as much as possible, as plastic containers often have these harmful chemicals. Another way to reduce exposure is to avoid all shop-bought cosmetic and skin care products, including shampoos and deodorants. In fact, some of the worst offenders are sunscreens, with five out of the 6 having oestrogen mimicking ingredients. Instead seek out products that are made from 100% natural ingredients. [6] Ultimately, you may have to refuse to allow your daughter to wear makeup and skin care products until her body has stopped developing. As she is most vulnerable when her body is developing, taking such a stand may protect her health in the long run. Cosmetic companies are being pressured to withdraw these chemicals from their product lines but it will be some time before it is safe to use many shop-bought products. In the meantime, we must protect our daughters and limit their exposure to chemicals which could cause them harm in later life.

School lunch saviours
Are you having the school lunch blues? Tired of making the same thing to find out it hasn’t been eaten or worst still thrown out at school? By Amanda Mathiot By the final term of school most kids are over the normal lunches so here are a few ideas to spice things up a bit:
Top tips • Get your kids busy in the kitchen, they usually eat food they’ve helped cook. Scones (add pumpkin) and pikelets are fantastic examples. They can be made using wholemeal flour and they are easy to prepare and cook. Your little ones can do the measuring and mixing. Have a weekend cook up and make double batches, so you can have some on the day you cook them and freeze the rest for lunches during the week. • Experiment with different breads try pitta bread, raisin bread or spread
Lebanese bread with mayo and roll it up with grated carrot, beetroot, shredded lettuce, diced tomato and ham. Yum! • Make some homemade pasta salad or vegetable noodle salad. • If you have your own veggie garden, get the little ones to pick their favourites and wash and prepare them for school the next day. They’ll be proud showing their friends their healthy and fresh veggies that they grew. • Cook up some vegetable fritters. Delicious! • Freeze yoghurt the night before, for a lovely cool treat. • Chop up some chunks of cheese and add some cracker biscuits.
• Leftover roast, chicken pieces or rissoles can all be eaten cold. • Healthy protein alternatives to meat: tinned tuna or salmon, baked beans or eggs.
Food safety tips Remember that food deteriorates in the hotter months in our tropical climate and food poisoning bacteria flourish. • Include an ice pack or frozen drink in the lunch box (and check out insulated lunch boxes). • Don’t pack foods that have just been cooked – cool in the fridge overnight. • Make sure your kids eat the food by lunchtime.
Vege Fritters Ingredients:
What to do:
• 1½ cups (about 150g) mixed vegetables (e.g. carrots, zucchini, pumpkin, beans, capsicum), grated or cut into small equal sizes
[1] Steam or parboil the vegetables until almost tender. Gently mix them into the mashed potato.
• 3 cups (300g) mashed potato • 2 tablespoons of plain flour • 1 egg, beaten • Breadcrumbs
16
[2] Flatten mixture on a lightly floured board to about 2cm thick and using a small (5cm) biscuit cutter, cut into shapes or cut with a knife to make stick shapes.
[3] Coat each one in flour and dip into the beaten egg and then the breadcrumbs. Put in the fridge for 10 minutes. [4] Deep or shallow fry in hot oil in batches until brown.

Fitness for women on the go Contours has a proven lifestyle program that consists of two components: 1) fitness through the CardioFit exercise systems and 2) weight loss through a 30-day weight loss program. The CardioFit exercise system was designed specifically for women and, unlike many other systems, uses real weight bearing equipment. As Director Pauline Gleeson explains “Our equipment increases metabolism and improves bone density, helping to prevent osteoporosis, while burning a mountain of calories.” In combination with their weight loss system, this can help women quickly reach their personal physical goals. The CardioFit exercise system consists of a sixteen-piece program, alternating strength-training machines with aerobic stations. A cue tape keeps members moving through the workout at a fast pace while a fitness trainer provides motivation. Most importantly, Contours staff are always on hand to help and assist members as they go through their work-out. In the space of only 29 minutes, members of all ages and fitness levels have strengthened, shaped and toned all
their major muscle groups, worked their cardiovascular system and burned a considerable amount of calories. In addition to the CardioFit program, every membership also includes the Contours 30 Day Weight Loss Program – an easy-to-follow nutritional plan. This program guides women through seven steps to manage their feelings and environment, to make the best food choices and set reasonable goals.” As Pauline says “it is designed to help them build on success and with each step their motivation, self esteem and confidence will grow. When we are in control of our environment, our emotions and our behaviours, we are also in control of our weight.” According to Pauline, following a nutritional plan and utilising the CardioFit exercise system just a few times a week can create positive results in as little as three weeks. Contours members also have access to the centre’s Infrared sauna, which can assist in weight loss in
addition to detoxifying and relaxing the body. Why Women Need Weight Training • Reduces the risk of heart disease • Reduces the risk of diabetes • Increases weight loss • Increases vitality and strength • Improves balance • Increases energy level • Your new muscle will help fight obesity • Helps strengthen your mental health • Eases back pain and can assist with arthritis • And best of all it will work no matter how old you are For additional info or to organise your special TRIAL workout call Smithfield: 4038 3733, Cairns: 4031 5010 or Innisfail: 4061 6870

Strawberry Puffs
Salmon Parcels
with Teah
Ingredients: • Puff Pastry • Strawberry Jam • Coconut • Whipped cream
Method: We used the puff pastry in a few different ways: (1) Firstly we got a sheet of the pastry and covered it with jam. We rolled it up and cut it into sections and placed on the cooking tray. (2) Next we got a mini muffin tray and put the puff pastry into it and put in a 1/2 teaspoon of jam. (3) We also cut out flower shapes with a cookie cutter, layering them on top of each other with jam in between. We also sprinkled some of them with coconut for a different flavour.

(4) Pop them on a tray and put in the oven for about 15 minutes on 200oC. When they are all puffed up and turning golden then they are ready to go. Take them out of the oven and let them cool. We filled the little cup shaped ones with cream.

Healthy kids Helping teeth and gums stay healthy This month we’re going to look inside our mouths, at those white things called ‘TEETH’ and also at the pink soft stuff that keeps our teeth in place ‘GUMS’.
we lightly brush our gums too – so our teeth don’t fall out when we grow up!
Our teeth are important for many things, biting food, chewing food and looking good when our photo is taken. So it’s essential that we look after them. Brushing helps prevent plaque (say; plak), which is a clear film that sticks to our teeth and acts like a magnet for bacteria. Plaque also causes gingivitis – gum disease. Gum disease makes your gums red, swollen and sore. So when we are brushing our teeth, it’s vital that
• Brush teeth and gums at least twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner. If you have braces, it’s important to brush 3 times a day.
How can we brush properly?
• Spend at least 2-3 minutes each time you brush – if this sounds like a long time, try playing your favorite song to pass the time. • When brushing teeth and gums, slant your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle.
• Floss! Flossing gets rid of food that is hidden between teeth our brush may not get to. • Rinse!
How to Floss Slip the dental floss between each tooth and move along the gum line. It will feel a little weird at first, but once you the get the hang of it, you’ll certainly have the cleanest teeth in the house. Calanna Pharmacy can help with your brushing needs, visit us!

Awesome Cheerleading
How to do a scorpion BY: Tamara Cameron www.awesomecheerleading.com
PART 2:
By now you have been working on your stretches and balances for a month and should be quite comfortable in holding these (see Pak Mag edition number 28). To pull the scorpion: Step 1: put the same hand as foot by your side palm up and pinky finger to the front (ie thumb to the back). Step 2: Bend your knee up and place your foot pinky toe to the front big toe to the back, sole of your foot facing up. Step 3: Place your foot into your hand: thumb on the sole, pinky finger to big toenail.
Match the description in Column 1 to Column 2 by drawing a line to the correct word.
Step 4: Pull your foot around to behind your head and use your other hand to help hold it there. If you cannot reach with your other hand hold onto your wrist. Step 5: Keep practicing, when you can confidently hold this you can start trying to balance this on a step or other slightly raised surface.

Bulletin #21 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Bulletin: Part XXIV
Last Edition: Bree suddenly remembered a particular gadget that she had hidden between her toes. It was the newest and most clever device that Bopstar had invented and now was the perfect time to use it. Bree looked over at Trent and winked, letting him know that she was up to something. With the quick flick of her foot, the Brightly-Reminising-Employ-Emplicator device, also known as the B.R.E.E. gadget, flew out of her boot and landed just in front of Trent’s leg. “Trent! Quickly press the blue button! Do it now!” yelled Bree. Trent leaned over, and what seemed like slow motion, pressed the button. Almost immediately, the B.R.E.E. device started shaking; then it began to spin incredibly fast and then the device started bounce up and down, up and down. Trent cried out “What’s happening? I’m scared!” diving behind Bree. ‘Come on, come on’ urged Bree, it can’t be much longer…it just can’t. With that thought, the B.R.E.E. device levitated up into the centre of the room and beeped twice. It then hovered over to Bree and a little laser gun popped out from the side of the wing and started shooting lasers at the ropes and cords which kept Bree hostage. Within seconds, Bree was
up on her feet and over to untie Trent. “Alright Trent, get yourself together. We need to be at our best and most alert if we are going to defeat this villain. He may be ugly but under that ugly exterior, he is one cunning, evil and most importantly, a dangerous villain.” Stated Bree, preparing Trent for the job they had in store. Whilst being tied up, Bree had been thinking and pondering of ways to defeat the crook, but each time she was getting closer to a result, she had been interrupted. FLASH “I’ve got it!” proclaimed Bree, as she whispered her ingenious plan into Trent’s ear. MEANWHILE…BACK IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM… “We are trying to get your money but this amount of money takes time to organise and we are at full speed! We need more time!” stated the Prime Minister. “Yes time is an interesting thing…however your TIME is now slowly creeping away and there is still no money in my nominated accounts. You have 48hours 10mins and approx 23 seconds left until deadline, so snap to it!” ordered the evil villain, not taking any sympathy on the world leaders. “Guards, it is starting to get close to the deadline so get the Satellite – Activated – Navigational – Targeting – Armoury armed, aimed and ready to destroy the reef and rainforest. Remember the plan crew, even if they pay the money, I am still going to destroy them. MWAHAHAHAHAHAH!” chuckled the evil villain. To Be Continued…
Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.

Freshwater Crocodile Proudly brought to you by
PAK Facts Did you know? DID YOU KNOW: Freshwater Crocodiles are endemic to Australia?
In the last issue of Pak animal facts we looked at the largest of the crocodiles found in Australia which is the Estuarine Crocodile or other wise known at the Saltwater Crocodile. This issue we will look at some interesting facts about the other Crocodile found in Australia, the Freshwater Crocodile. Freshwater Crocodiles are the smaller species of Crocodile found in Australia. They have a longer skinnier snout, are not territorial like the Estuarine Crocodile and are smaller in size getting to a maximum of 2 to 3 metres for a grown male and around 1.8 to 2 metres for a grown female. This particular Crocodile is only found in Freshwater creeks and Billabongs, and cannot survive in saltwater. They eat fish, crustaceans, insects, reptiles, frogs and birds. Freshwater Crocodiles are not a danger to humans however they can still pack a nasty bite if mistaken for food when swimming in their water, or even getting too close to their nesting sites. Unlike the Estuarine Crocodile, Freshwater Crocodiles can move fast in short distances on land. They have the ability to gallop and have been known to reach up to 18 kph.
32
Freshwater Crocodiles are only found in Australia. They are not found any where else in the world, unlike the Estuarine Crocodile which are also found in Papua New Guinea , Solomon Islands, South East Asia and parts of Sri Lanka and India.
DID YOU KNOW: A Crocodile can be aged by growth rings found in their bones? It is very difficult to age a crocodile by just looking at their size. A crocodile’s growth depends on many factors like the amount of food and how often it eats, the temperature of the water, air and crocodile and the availability of food. When a crocodile dies scientists can estimate its age by counting the growth rings found with in a section of its bones.

Preparing for child birth: Elaine Seager reports on ways to prepare for the marathon of giving birth Approaching childbirth without any preparation is like not bothering to train for a marathon. A successful birth is much more likely if you’re physically fit with a good diet and regular exercise but emotional preparation, especially eliminating fear, is just as important. Many women seek alternative treatments to help them through pregnancy but they also have a lot to offer in terms of preparing you for a good natural delivery.
Pregnancy Yoga Pregnancy yoga has become pretty popular and it offers a wonderful refuge for expectant mums to take time out to relax and connect with their baby. Yoga has obviously physical benefits in terms of strengthening and stretching your body but, just as important for the birth, it teaches calming and centreing techniques. These can be used to work through contractions more effectively and to eliminate tension and help you relax. The more centred and connected you can be with your body during birth the easier it will be.
Acupuncture Acupuncture can help relieve many conditions associated with pregnancy but several research studies have also shown that it can assist the birthing process. One particular study undertaken in 2006 found that acupuncture resulted in a 35% reduction in the number of women being induced (43% for first time mums), a 31% reduction in epidurals and a 32% reduction in caesareans. As a result of this, pregnant women are encouraged to have regular acupuncture treatments during pregnancy and then increase them to once a week in the last 4 weeks before the birth.
Reflexology Reflexology works along the same principles as acupuncture except that, rather than sticking needles in to you, the process involves massaging pressure points in your feet. Not only is having your feet massaged a relaxing therapy but research has shown that regular reflexology during pregnancy can reduce your labour times by over 60%. One particular study showed that women having regular treatments had an average first stage labour of 5-6 hours compared to textbook expectations of 16-24 hours. It also found that Stage 2 and 3 of labour
www.pakmag.com.au
combined was less than 25 mins for those having had reflexology, compared to more typical experiences of 1-2 hours. The more preparation you undertake for your birth the more empowered you’ll feel about successfully delivering your baby. According to Eastern medicine a woman’s biology is wired up so that she can’t labour if she’s scared. The more comfortable and positive your mind set the more likely you are to have a natural spontaneous labour and a successful birth.
Calanna Naturopath Vanessa Wannenburg also suggests the following for use in child birth: • Raspberry leaf tea (3-4 x daily): Strengthens uterine contraction and assists with partus preparator. • Vitamin C and E: prevents tearing and may help provide a better delivery process. • Homeopathics such as arnica 6C: reduce bruising trauma and shock. (Used 4 hourly throughout birthing process.) • Pain relief: Mag Phos 6C antispasmodic effects. • Intermittent labour: homeopathic Caulophyllum 6C (1-2 doses can enhance contractions if labour has ceased). • Caesarian section: Homeopathic Arnica 6C taken before surgery and immediately after birth. Hypericum 6C repairs nerve damage, Staphysagria 6C to aid healing of incision.

Slip Slop Slap November 15-21 is National Skin Cancer Awareness Week and since the harsh summer sunshine is back it’s time to take extra care protecting our toddlers and kids from the sun. Queensland still has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world but it’s easy to prevent. Australians have been well educated on how to prevent skin cancer and how to spot the signs of melanoma but unfortunately research shows that migrants who are moving here from Europe are at greater risk because they haven’t been exposed to decades of the Slip Slop Slap message. The on-going advice is to slip on sun protective clothing, slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen, slap on a broad brimmed hat, seek shade wherever possible and slide on some sunglasses. As far as children are concerned you can also add ‘swap your usual daily activities’. It’s particularly
36
important for kids to avoid high UV times of the day so rearrange your activities so you’re inside during the day and doing outdoor activities like swimming in the late afternoon or evening. Sun protection clothing is important and need not be daggy these days as there are lots of Mums out there who have begun designing and creating funky clothes to protect your kids from the sun. One of them is Ali Mowbray from BABES IN THE SHADE who was diagnosed a few years ago with discoid lupus which is aggravated by the sun. She was determined to be vigilant about sun exposure for herself and her children and after a fruitless search for long sleeved sun shirts that were good quality, stylish and affordable she created her own. Check out her gorgeous sun shirts at www.babesintheshade.com.au. They
are all UPF 50+ and chlorine and salt water resistant. For more information contact (07) 3168 1120 or email sales@babesintheshade.com.au
to win: BABES IN THE SHADE are giving away one sunshirt with matching swimwear (bikini for girls and racer briefs for boys) to the first PakMag reader who correctly answers this question: “What is the maximum size you can buy a babes in the shade sunshirt.” Send your answers via email to: competitions@pakmag.com.au Entries close: 20 November 2009

Aqua Watch Pool Safety not infallible so it’s important to check them regularly for maintenance issues. As we all know, children can be very resourceful and enterprising when they want something and have been known to stack toys and bikes to open a pool gate. So, be alert to the possibility that they can still find a way to get in to the pool even with adequate fencing.
In Australia, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in the under 5’s and unfortunately recent figures show that home pool drownings are on the increase. A survey conducted by the Australian Consumers’ Association (2004) examining the safety aspects of pool fences found that over half of 31 commonly used pool fences failed to meet Australian safety standards. While pool fences do save lives they are
If you want some extra reassurance that your kids are safe around the pool, check out the products that Aqua Watch have available. They are Australia’s leading importer of water alarms and are now distributing a swimming pool alarm around Australia. It attaches to the side of virtually any pool and sounds a piercing alarm, both at the poolside and in your home, as soon as an object greater than 5 kilos (equiv. to a 4-6 month old baby) falls in the water. The biggest danger with drowning is that it is
silent and quick so an alarm provides an extra layer of safety. The Aqua Watch Swimming Pool Alarm meets strict international safety standard and costs $395. However, PakMag readers can get it for $295 with free delivery (quote PakMag when calling or enter it online). Call (02) 9411 4902 or visit www.aquawatch.com.au for info.

Shopping centre money gobblers: friend or foe? browsed and my son ran backwards and forwards between Mummy and Daddy. The shop was small but after a couple of minutes I noticed my son hadn’t been over to my side of the store for a while. I called out to him. No answer. He usually answers straight away every time. Oh dear, Houston, we have a problem. Walking over to my husband, I calmly mentioned that our son wasn’t with me and he had the same answer. Every parents dreaded thought - our son has left the store and we have no idea where he is. Quickly throwing our toddler to Daddy, I ran barefoot past the girl at the counter and scanned the hundreds of people outside but I couldn’t see him. I stopped and focused, looking around and assessing the situation like a detective on the hunt for a clue. I tried to think like a 3 year old - where would he go first? Luckily there were no escalators nearby. And then I spotted it. What I like to call ‘the money gobblers’. The $2 rides that your small children can’t go past until you’ve run out of gold coins in your purse. Who would’ve thought that going round and round in circles could cost $2 and bring so much enjoyment? By Amanda Mathiot I have never been a big fan of shopping. I can’t distinguish whether this is because I have six children OR if I have six children because I dislike shopping. My worst nightmare is when I need to travel to Cairns for a big shopping trip along with a long list of ‘must buy’ objects. I recently had to go on one of these trips. My four eldest children were all at school and my husband was able to tag along accompanied by my other 2 younger children (3yr old and 20mth old). We only had a certain amount of hours to do what we needed to do and be home in time for the bus drop off. Ready, set …..GO…… There I was in the shopping centre with a baby on one hip, long shopping list dragging behind, mumbling under my breath and running around at a million miles an hour. In the shoe store I was busy trying on shoes, while my daughter kept running away with my shoes, my husband
38
For once in my life I was relieved to see a money gobbler. I have spent 14yrs doing my best to avoid them but on this day I was saying a silent prayer to the “money gobbler gods”. Sweet relief swept over me as I spotted my son sitting patiently in the seat of an airplane, waiting for the $2 coins to start rolling in. I thanked a kind lady who smiled knowingly at me and at that moment it occurred to me. All these years, I had considered these machines as the enemy but when it mattered most they were a godsend. So are they a friend or foe? I’ll never know, but on this day I was glad that the money gobbler was out the front of the shoe shop.

If you are looking for a way to escape for the weekend, and still be in the heart of Cairns, the revived 5-star Hilton Cairns has spectacular views and the luxury and relaxation you deserve at your fingertips.
37” inch LCD TV, Spa, Sauna, Pool, Fitness Room, Chapel (for those who’ve not already taken the plunge), Two dining venues – Mondos and Hanuman Restaurants, Internet Access, Baby sitting services, Playstation for the Kids (and Dad), plus heaps more. Also our child received a welcome gift on arrival; he could stay free (in existing bedding) and could eat for free (from kids menu for lunch and dinner). Dependant on your budget there are many different room styles to sleep up to four adults.
Recently, the hotel has been under refurbishment, spending over $4 million modernising; the events spaces, the sophisticated rooms and popular dining venues. Upon arrival, this was clearly seen once stepping through the entrance. If first impressions were an indicator of what was to come, then I was inspired already. The friendly and helpful reception and concierge staff were all too eager to please, helping my family with our luggage and delivering it, and us, directly to our room. And this isn’t as easy as it sounds, as many parents know that when you have a child, you have to bring extra clothes, spare nappies, bottles, formula…and the list goes on. However, Hilton staff were extremely helpful and were able to offer a crib, lug all the gear into our room (which took two trips) and still keep a smile on their face. Once inside our room, the view overlooking the Trinity Inlet was amazing. Even though we weren’t expecting to stay in the room the whole time, it was still nice to know that we relax on the balcony and watch the world pass by. Some of the fantastic facilities and
Mondos has always been a favourite with local families, especially Tuesdays with their family night. They also have entertainment on Thursday and Friday nights and Brunch on Sundays with bean bags and oversized games on the water front which are fantastic. After a relaxing night, we opted to try out Hanuman restaurant for a sensational buffet breakfast. Not only could you squeeze your own juice, and get an omelette made to order, all the favourites and more where on display which ensured lunch was well into the afternoon and the next few hours before checkout where spent lazing very contently beside the pool. I must mention a few other upgrades since last staying here, The Hilton Cairns now hosts a New Events Floor, featuring the largest Grand Ballroom in Cairns which is absolutely beautiful. If you
can’t be at Flemington this Melbourne Cup, Hilton Cairns is the place to be! The annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon will feature Live Music, Hot & Cold Buffet with a carving station, TAB & Sweeps, a Drinks Package and prizes for best dressed. Not only will you have a fantastic day, but you will also be helping to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. The Hilton Cairns are also the masters when it comes to Christmas day lunch. There will be three options to cater for all needs with the most family friendly option in the grand ball room. There will be a jumping castle, face painting and activities for the kids, plus live entertainment for the adults. The food is to die for with an extensive buffet catering for all tastes especially the seafood lovers. Santa will make a visit and the kids even get their own special buffet so that they can help themselves while you kick back and enjoy the day like you deserve. So if you’re looking for a family night away or a special night away with that special someone, the Hilton Cairns has everything at your fingertips and is the perfect place to be at any time of year, but especially for Melbourne Cup and Christmas day. Paradise found for families If you don’t venture north to the open day on Sunday 1 November, then make a point of visiting Pelicans in Paradise since it takes family fun into a world of its own. something tasty (and kid-friendly) from 59 Restaurant and Bar. The opening of Pelicans in Paradise caps off a major redevelopment program undertaken over the past two years – primarily upgrading the clubhouse, introducing a new restaurant and a 96 room, 4.5 star boutique resort. So, if the kids can’t bear to tear themselves away from all the fun – check out the local accommodation specials and check in for the night. In the beautiful surroundings of Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club near Kewarra Beach, Pelicans in Paradise is a dedicated recreation hub for families that promises the biggest feast of fun for kids of all ages since the opening of Muddy’s Playground in Cairns several years ago. It includes swimming (C-Me Swim’s new swim school), an adventure park, minigolf and more, with beautiful spacious lawns to kick a soccer ball and close proximity to the impressive clubhouse where Mum and Dad can take five with a drink or the kids can re-fuel with
The adventure playground is designed to excite everyone from toddlers to early teens. Queenslander style cubby houses are heaven for the hide and seekers, as much as the ropes courses are for the extreme adventurers. Add to this, the bounciest of jumping mats, swings and all the traditional playground apparatus, albeit with a new twist, and you have a great day out complete with plenty of wind in your hair action. The mini-golf is great fun for older children and adults with a brand new course that takes around 45 minutes to
complete and is an excellent activity to include in events or special occasions. There are special discounts available for groups and families that also include all available activities within Pelicans in Paradise. Pelicans in Paradise is the perfect birthday party venue. The team of professional event coordinators can arrange birthday parties from as little as $10 per person. Will my child be a ‘Troubled Teen’? Denise Bewert, local author of book ‘Troubled Teens’, reports on the ‘risk factors’ contributing to problematic teen years It is normal for young people to take part in risky behaviours. Taking risks helps develop problem solving skills and may teach important lessons about relationships, peer pressure and the acceptance of difference. But today with the ready access and availability of potent party drugs, binge drinking, sex at a younger age, increased truancy, Internet addiction and other issues, many teenagers are taking part in behaviours that may affect their future physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Sociologists believe that both nature (biology) and nurture (experience) play important roles in the development of risky and problematic behaviours in teenagers. Whilst these are only guidelines, a number of factors have been identified to help predict a troubled adolescence. Research on biological factors that may contribute to young people being troubled teens include prenatal exposure to alcohol and drugs, being the child of adolescent parents, birth order in the family (the ‘middle child syndrome’), very low birth weight and extreme prematurity, chronic medical conditions and neurological disorders. One of the most important environmental factors is experiencing ineffective parenting in the formative years (before formal schooling). If children have no boundaries, no consequences for problem behaviours and poor social
www.pakmag.com.au
skilling in the years from birth to 4, the possibility of problem behaviours in their teenage years in increased. Other environmental factors include attachment issues which occur when children have little care, affection and nurturing in the early years, poor modelling of coping mechanisms from parents and other significant adults, parental discord, long term parental unemployment, frequent moving, poverty and parents working long hours with little time to effectively communicate with their children. Children may also be at risk if they experience unresolved grief and loss, separation and divorce, stress from job loss, having a parent with a chronic physical or mental health issue and being exposed to domestic violence. Being taken in to foster care as a result of abuse and neglect in the home is also a major predictor. However, many of us know teenagers who have experienced several of these potentially damaging conditions, yet they have made successful and confident transitions to adulthood. So, why do some young people make it and others resort to substance abuse, self-harm, crime or suicide? “Home is a child’s first classroom” The single biggest factor determining a child’s pathway in life is their family. A strong supportive family environment enables them to develop resilience and
cope successfully with life’s ups and downs. As African American novelist James Baldwin reminds us: “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders but they have never failed to imitate them”. Reassure your child that you will always do your best for them. Be a trusted and predictable adult and encourage them to seek support from other caring adults when needed. Denise is a Guidance Officer and the author of two books, Tackling Teens and Troubled Teens. Troubled Teens is available from Angus and Robertson stores or from Denise at denise.bewert@ bigpond.com.

Creating with clay Fossil Necklace
(8) Wrap lightly using a plastic bag and place somewhere safe to dry. It needs to dry for approximately 24 hours.
Kit from Overflow: • 2kg block of air drying clay • Cookie cutters • Wax thread • Bead plastic leaves • Craft rhinestone - stars • Craft container Total
(9) After it has dried, cut a piece of thread long enough to go over your child’s neck. Thread it through the hole, tie a knot at the back and there you have your fossil necklace.

Plastic lid pots
$18.97
In this activity we used old little plastic lids from hairspray or whatever you have lying around the house.
Things we had at home: • Shells from last month’s activity • Old knife to cut clay • Old pencil • Newspaper • Rolling pin
• We rolled our clay out fairly thin. Then we covered the lid with the clay, pressing and pulling to cover the edges. • We did the same for the inside. Press all the sides together so it joins.
What we did: (1) Place the newspaper down to protect the table. Give everybody some clay. By Amanda Mathiot This month we are creating with clay. We’re making fossil necklaces and also decorating plastic lids. Clay is an awesome medium to work with. Air drying clay is fantastic to work with, because there is no firing involved, so it is very safe and simple to use. No special equipment is needed. So get down to Overflow this month and pick yourself up a Pak Mag craft kit for the special price of 20% off.
• While the clay is damp, we decorated our pot with the stars and leaves.
(3) Roll clay out using the rolling pin in to a square big enough for the cookie cutter to fit on (about 1cm thick).
• Dry the same way as the necklaces and voila you have a cute little pot, to store little treasures.
(4) Pick a shape for the necklace. Press your cookie cutter down hard to cut the shape out of the clay.
Want to do this activity? Pak Overflow Craft Pack NOW 20%OFF RRP
(6) Using the pencil poke a hole through the top of the shape. (7) Pick a shell and press down onto the clay. Leaving an imprint. Remove shell, leaving a fossil impression.

Blowing bubbles Local Mum and Dive Instructor Amanda McCormack, has a passion for teaching children how to dive. Here she explains how children can experience the thrill of being underwater.
When I was a child I dreamed about swimming with ocean creatures but I never imagined that I would eventually become a dive instructor. I have always been involved in sports and have worked with children all my life so when I became a Scuba Ranger Instructor my dream came true in ten fold. Since then I’ve been introducing children to a whole new world underwater which has been immensely satisfying for me, not only because I get to experience their thrill and excitement when they first learn to dive, but also because I see how much it builds their confidence and ability to work in a team. Scuba Rangers was developed in 1999 by Paul Oberle of Scuba Ventures of Shreveport, LA and in 2000 SSI Co-developed the program by adding video and recognition awards for children. Their mission statement is: “To involve children in scuba diving so they can experience the excitement of water exploration.”
48
We are blessed to live in a corner of the world which has the best diving in the world right in our back yard. I moved here from the US when I was 27 years old and my first dive on the Great Barrier Reef changed my life’s path. The majority of children who I have certified as a Scuba Ranger have had a similar experience and fallen in love with the underwater world. Some families like diving so much that they go on to make it their big family social event of the year.
Rangers in the pool. We teach two at a time in the Ocean.
Getting your children involved in scuba diving is easy. As long as they don’t have medical conditions preventing them from being able to dive (eg. asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, taking Ritalin etc) any children can take part in Scuba Rangers between the ages of 8-12 years of age. Children over 12 can join any other normal dive courses.
The classes are held at a private venue in Freshwater where there is a deep pool and a classroom surrounded by rainforest. Obviously there is a fair amount of theory that needs to be covered so we work through chapters in workbooks as well as learning rescue techniques, basic first aid, snorkel skills and scuba skills. Importantly, for anyone learning to dive and especially for children, the environment in which we teach is very relaxing and lots of fun. Once the children make it through the 5 levels they become an official Scuba Ranger and they can continue to be involved with other divers through our club which arranges Bubble days once a month as well as group activities like bowling, laser tag and camping trips.
Our Scuba Rangers classes can be held after school, weekends or school holidays. We teach four students at one time and have six qualified Scuba

La Porchetta Perfect for saving pennies on a fun family day out before our meal was served. The menu is huge with an extensive range of pizza, pasta dishes, salads, steaks as well as some chicken and seafood meals. Kid’s meals are available from $8.90 and include chicken strips, fish bites, lasagne and schnitzel. They were also more than happy to do small versions of other dishes on the menu when we asked. At lunch times there is a great value lunch special for $11.90 which includes pizza or pasta and a glass of wine or a soft drink. We started with some yummy garlic bread and bruschetta and then, after much deliberation, we ordered fried calamari, a mushroom pizza, chicken & avocado penne, penne carbonara and gnocchi. Oh, and a couple of chocolate milkshakes. Everyone was very happy with what they ordered - the food was delicious, the service fantastic and all in all La Porchetta proved to be a great value family restaurant. By Bree, Elaine & Trina (& Bree’s Mum!) Situated right next to the City Cinema on Grafton Street, La Porchetta is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before a movie. And, if you do eat here you are eligible to purchase movie tickets from the restaurant at a discounted price of $11.50 to be used at any Birch Carroll & Coyle cinema. Perfect for saving a few pennies on a fun family day out. La Porchetta is a spacious and family oriented restaurant so we thought we’d try it out for a PakMag team lunch with kids and Bree’s visiting mother in tow! There’s plenty of space for kids to do their thing without disturbing other customers and the friendly staff quickly brought out colouring-in sheets to keep them amused
La Porchetta will be open for Christmas lunch. Their Christmas Day Buffet includes cold seafood (prawns, bugs, Sandcrabs and oysters), a selection of antipasto (inc. pizzas), fragrant herb soup served with prawns and chicken, a selection of 3 pasta dishes, the carvery (including roast turkey, roast ham, reef fish, vegetables, garlic mash, and desserts.
