Hello and welcome to our 40th edition of PakMag (wow, we’re getting old!) I’m happy to announce that IGA are now major sponsors of all of our events. These locally owned stores are very community minded and provide a lot of support for local causes so wherever you can please repay them for their support. Since October is Halloween month our next PakClub (10 Oct) will be ‘spooky’ themed. We will also be holding a Halloween Party at the Cairns Recreation Centre on the 30th. Jordan has been a delight this month and for a change he hasn’t had a teething meltdown just before going to print! He knows he has to be a good boy because we’re about to head off for our first overseas family holiday together. Mummy and Daddy will be tying the knot in Bali as you read this so keep your fingers crossed our little page boy doesn’t lose our rings on the beach! We’ve been prepping him for the flight by getting him to watch TV in the hope it’ll get him used to sitting still for more than 30 seconds. The only show he’s interested in is Bob the Builder but it makes him jump around like a lunatic. Looks like books will have to suffice.

In a quest for greater flexibility, many mums are becoming selfemployed or starting a business to provide extra family income while still caring for young children. These new ‘mum-preneurs’ are making a significant impact on the country’s economy and they also account for many of the country’s new millionaires.

Shortly afterwards she set up her own business called Mirror Image Consultations and began networking to meet potential clients. Word soon spread and now she advises people in Cairns and interstate on colours, styles and how to create mix and match wardrobes. Carols’ advice: Since Gerlinda’s business is dependent on her time (which has a limited capacity) she should look for ways to leverage her time better eg. doing workshops with more people, writing a book or creating other related products that she can sell.

Wide Bay Australia Story by Sally-Anne Fairley, Cairns Area Manager

online banking - be safe More and more people are using the internet to do their banking and pay bills. It’s convenient, usually cheaper than doing it in person and more environmentally friendly. Unfortunately more and more of us are being targeted by internet scams. These try to trick you into revealing personal details and account details so they can steal information, money and property. To minimise the risk of being caught in one of these scams it is recommended that you follow these steps: • Always access your banks website by typing the address into the browser or keeping the address in your ‘favourites’ or ‘bookmark’ folder to reduce the risk of mistakes or deception. In particular beware of bogus websites and email phishing. • Keep your computer up-to-date with anti-virus, firewall software and the latest patches. Anti-virus software is used to detect and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software such as worms and Trojans. Any computer connected to the Internet faces the risk of virus infection, so it makes sense to secure your computer adequately with antivirus software. New viruses appear every day, so in order for your antivirus software to be effective, these definitions need to be updated regularly.

6

www.pakmag.com.au

You will also need to keep your operating system up to date. This can usually be done via their official website. No software can guarantee 100 percent protection — viruses are constantly evolving and can spread between computers rapidly. Antivirus software is only effective if it’s up-to-date, so it’s vital that you subscribe to regular updates and ensure that your updates are completed. Some antivirus and other software providers do supply updates online, these are called security patches. The Internet Association of Australia provides links to various internet security programs and vendors. • Avoid using passwords or PINs (Personal Identification Numbers) that are relevant to your personal situation. Passwords with telephone numbers, postcodes, your name, or the name of a close relative and dates of birth are simple for criminals to trace. Create passwords with letters and numbers that cannot be easily attributable to you. • Always memorise your password or PIN and do not write it down or store it on your computer. You are responsible for keeping this information confidential.

• Change your password regularly and don’t use the same password for other services such as your video store. • Confirm that your data is encrypted between your computer and your financial institution by looking for the padlock symbol on the bottom right hand corner of the browser window. • Always log out from the Internet banking menu when you finish all your banking. • Close your Internet browser after logging out at the end of each Internet banking session. • Beware of any windows that ‘pop up’ during an Internet banking session and be very suspicious if it directs you to another website which then requests your customer identification or password.

This information has been prepared by Wide Bay Australia Ltd ABN 40 087 652 060 (AFS Licence No: 239686). It should come as no surprise that over a third of kids do not share what they do on the Internet with their parents and that proportion increases significantly in mid to later teens. If they’re not doing research they’re most likely engaging in social networking media. Social networking sites are becoming popular with increasingly younger children. Facebook does not permit access to children under 13 although the fact that they don’t have to prove their age renders this guideline useless although you can use this in negotiations with your child. Unfortunately, children don’t know what they don’t know and they fail to understand the potential risks and dangers inherent in internet use. Must I stay or can I go? After separating, many parents find themselves wanting or needing to relocate with their children to another town, state or even country. Researchers in Sydney recently did a study to find out what Australian babies are eating as they transition to a solid food diet and discovered that more than 25% of their intake came from chips, sweetened drinks, biscuits and other nutritionally poor foods. Chocolate was eaten every other day by more than onethird of the toddlers, and two-thirds ate biscuits most days. Parents were reminded

You don’t have to be a movie star to have a stylist. Local stylist and personal shopper Gerlinda Aras has a web-based programme called My Private Stylist at http://www. mirrorimageconsultations.myprivatestylist. com/ for those who need style advice.

Local SEA FM Announcer Lou Morrow shares parenting tips: Parenthood is by and large a pretty thankless task. If they only realised how much we put in for them, they might have more to say than “I’m bored” or “I’m hungry”! If they really understood they might say something like this: “Mummy, thank you for sacrificing your body, sleep and on occasion your sanity to bring me into this world and keep me safe and loved. Thanks for providing me with free room and board. I realise rent and groceries are expensive and you have to work to pay for them so I would never belittle that fact by complaining about the lack of sugary treats readily available to my bottomless pit of a stomach. I know you’re not a taxi driver and want you to know how much I appreciate you driving me around to endless after school activities and social functions”. You may never hear these words but in the mean time, regular “I love you’s” will suffice – I’ll enjoy those while they last!

daddy diary 17 Potts, one half of the Sea FM morning crew, continues his chronicles of first time fatherhood I’ve just celebrated my second father’s day and the highlight was the homemade card I received with Noah’s first drawing inside - a couple of scribbled lines using a blue highlighter. I’m looking forward to the day when I can hang one of his drawings on the fridge. Speaking of fridges; that’s about the only household appliance that Noah can’t actually get into. He’s been spending a lot of time exploring the kitchen recently so now the dishwasher has to be turned off at the power point and the food cupboard must be kept shut at all times. He loves getting in to the drawers and chucking tea towels and everything everywhere although luckily he can’t reach the cutlery drawer yet. We deluded ourselves in to thinking we could just teach Noah not to open certain draws and cupboard doors but that was obviously a silly idea. Kylie is now devastated that baby locks are spoiling the colour scheme of her beautiful kitchen. Noah also finds it very funny to constantly switch off the MyStar box. I don’t find it quite so amusing when the TV keeps getting turned off during a Hawthorn game. This month is footy finals time and I’ve been hanging out for years for a son to sit back and watch the footy with. Unfortunately Noah’s attention span only lasts about 10 seconds so I’ll be waiting a little longer. If only the Teletubbies were playing at the MCG.
