Hello and welcome to the 27th edition of PakMag, our Fathers Day and spring holiday special. This month is jam packed with prizes for the whole family, you’ve got to be in it to win it. There’s lots happening in September with the end of Festival Cairns, Fathers Day and the spring school holidays. Make sure you keep our What’s On Guide somewhere handy and get out with the family and enjoy yourselves. This month has been interesting for me to say the least. To put it lightly I am surprised I am still awake and that this magazine actually made it to print. Jordan used to ‘sleep like a baby’ which I have decided is the stupidest saying in the whole world. I guess the only thing that gets you through it is knowing that it will eventually be over...in a few years! It’s funny the things you do to stop them from waking, drive around the block 10 times, sit in the car on the driveway working on your laptop, walk five blocks instead of hopping in the car (this one actually backfired when I got a flat tyre on the pram, which was of course fully loaded, and then I was stranded with a flat mobile phone...funny now but wasn’t at the time!) or putting them into bed with you which then takes a whole week to ‘wean’ them out of. I laugh at the days where I worked 15 hours and thought I was tired. Enjoy this edition of PakMag, it’s been a laugh putting it together, the whole PakMag team has had more than its fair share of sleepless nights this month so we hope this edition is as perfect as we think it is! what’s new in entertainment! Theatre with a message 14 & 15 September

‘Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes’ is a play based on the true story of a young girl who, like many children, got leukaemia after Hiroshima but believed that she would be healthy if she could make 1000 paper cranes. Her story has inspired a world wide peace movement. Every year children all over the world send paper cranes to be placed beneath her statue in Hiroshima on World Peace Day. At the Civic Theatre’s Monday 5.30pm show, audience members can fold a paper crane which will be sent to Hiroshima and also receive a free sampling of Japanese food.

daddy diary #5 Hello out there in PakMag-land. My name is Potts, one half of the SEAFM Morning Crew and for those who don’t know me, I’ve become a FTF (First Time Father). Well, I’m no longer expecting, I’ve become a First Time Father just in time for the Father’s Day issue and what an experience! Baby Noah was born at 10.27am on Friday 31st July which just happens to be my parents wedding anniversary. The whole birthing experience started at 1am Wednesday morning when Kylie’s waters broke. So it was off to Cairns Base where we stayed for a couple of hours before we decided to send ourselves home as nothing was happening and we had to pick up the mother in law from the airport. We were back into hospital for a check up 8am Thursday morning and the labour still had not begun. We went home again knowing that if Kylie didn’t start her labour that day she’d be induced on the Friday morning. So 48 hours after the waters broke, we went back to hospital at 12:30am Friday morning when Kylie went into labour. It was going to be a long night and I couldn’t believe my luck when we got to the birthing suite and the AFL Footy Show was on TV. This was followed by day one of the 3rd

Ashes test. Come to think of it, they were great signs that we were going to have a boy. After quite a long and painful experience I decided to get off the couch and see how Kylie was doing. What a trooper she was. No pain relief for 6.5 hours before she took the Epidural which is when she became a new woman. Unfortunately Kylie ended up needing a caesarean so I met her in the theatre decked out in my blue gown and after about 2 minutes we were the proud parents of a baby boy. I then sent about 100 SMS messages and made heaps of phone calls before gathering my new family all together in the maternity ward. It’s very hard to describe the feeling of how blessed and proud we feel. It’s amazing. Thanks to all the staff at Cairns Base Hospital - we’ve got nothing but praise for them and even the food was yummy!!! So now it’s dirty nappies, sleepness nights and baby talk for the next few years but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Celebrating Dads Fatherhood these days comes in many different guises, there’s married Dads, single Dads, stay-at-home Dads, long distance Dads, divorced Dads, adoptive Dads, custodial & non-custodial Dads to name a few variations. Whatever the circumstances, having a loving present father in a child’s life is hugely important and has been shown to affect their social and emotional stability as well as their achievements in school. And, in the longer term, a father’s loving guidance greatly influences a child’s ability to build and sustain strong marriages in their adult life. So in recognition of the role of father’s and in honour of Father’s Day here are a few stories of fatherhood from some of our local Dads.

I was born in Italy but when I was 2 years old my family left to live as refugees in Libya because of the war. Later, at the age of 24, I decided to migrate to Canada and a year later my wife Anna came to join me. We proceeded to have a family of 8 kids; 5 boys and 3 girls and as you can imagine life was very busy!

Sophie is my 2 year old daughter with my wife Caz and I also have a teenage daughter called Libby who lives in the UK (sadly, I haven’t had any contact with her since she was 4 years old). Fatherhood has taught me many things but the need for patience is probably the biggest. Patience is certainly needed when peanut butter sandwiches are being shoved in to the DVD Player but it’s also needed in the early days of sleep deprivation when we Dads are feeling inadequate, insecure, full of self pity and generally not very appreciated. This is normal but we quickly have to realise that Mum is going through the same thing at 100 times the intensity.

I was 38 years old when Ella was born and after an unfortunate episode where I passed out in an anti-natal class, I managed to be present (and stay upright) during her birth. I even got to cut the cord and watch her take her first breath. It was an amazing experience and something I will never forget.

Just after our last baby was born I migrated to Australia because we wanted to live in a warmer climate again. It was very difficult to find a house as no one wanted to rent to us with 8 children but luckily I was able to buy one after selling the family business in Canada. The rest of the family then came to Australia 6 months later. After 2 years in Sydney I went off exploring in our Kombi Van to find a new home for us. I stopped at many places along the way until I eventually found a little gem called Port Douglas. Back then it was a little town of 200 residents, only dirt roads, 2 pubs, one doctor, 2 general stores and 1 souvenir shop. It was beautiful and most of the family has remained up here since. I am proud of all my children. There have been a few hard times of course. The girls were the worst and the school principal called about them a few times. It was a worry when they had boyfriends who were into drugs, smoking and drinking. The boys were great and kept themselves out of trouble...or maybe they were just better at hiding it from me?!

The two most important things in a father’s life are their ears. I’ve learned to listen to Caz and understand that it’s not all about solutions. I just need to listen, acknowledge what she’s feeling and ask how I can help. This is a twoway street of course so I’m also working on letting her know when I’m upset too. My relationship with my own father is fairly traditional. I never really talked to him on an emotional or personal level much at all. We can chat about the footy, work, how the family is doing etc, but never really about how we feel. In a way we take our feelings for granted. He’s my dad, I’m his son and we love each other. It’s unconditional. I want Sophie and myself to know each other better than that. I hope that she’ll be able talk to me about how she feels…. not just about how she really needs to borrow the car.

My wife Cheryl then fell pregnant again after a couple of false starts. We were grateful to reach the 12 week scan but to our shock and surprise the young doctor doing the scan, as casually as you like, told us that there were two babies in there. It was the last thing we expected and after I picked myself up off the floor (again!) we spent the next 6 months preparing for their arrival. Luckily having Ella had given us the insight and experience to cope and I had accumulated enough leave to take a few months off to help. We got in a routine straight away and Cheryl breast fed the twins together to save time. They are now full of energy from the moment they wake up at 6.00am and pounce on me in bed like I am a human jumping castle. I can’t really remember what life was like before the babies arrived, although I really miss reading the weekend paper from start to finish and watching a DVD to the end. We are fortunate to have my wife’s parents close by so we do get away on occasions. Watching my children develop and being there for their first milestones has been a wonderful experience. The current milestone we are facing is toilet training the twins. So far so good!

I have been separated from my ex-wife and children for 5 years. My first son was born in 1998 and is now 11 and my second son is 9 years old. For the first 3 years that we were separated it was very hard to live away from my children. Time spent together was great but when they went home it left a big hole. At that stage though, they lived close by so I was able to see them as much as I or they wanted. However, two years ago my ex-wife decided to move back to Mandurah in Western Australia where they have a lot of extended family. My children are very lucky they have an intelligent, wise and fantastic mother but unfortunately we are not friends. I keep in contact with the kids via phone calls, letters and cards as much as I can. Six weeks ago I got to spend one and a half hours with them over dinner whilst they were back over here in the area for 10 days. Of course, I couldn’t help but notice

the differences in how they’ve grown, not just in height but also within themselves. They are becoming young men. Fatherhood opens your eyes to many things. How much you can love somebody from the first contact, how a smile or a look can affect your total soul and how a hug from your child… well… if you’re a dad you know what that feels like. Being a separated Dad can affect people in many different ways and some times we do the dumbest things. My biggest mistake as a father will affect me for as long as I live. Three years ago my eldest son gave me a trophy for Fathers Day with the words ‘THE WORLDS GREATEST DAD’ on it. I handed it back to him and told him I didn’t deserve it and the hurt in his eyes and the hole in my chest proved it. That one awful moment of poor judgement can never be healed no matter how much I apologise.

Supporting kids after separation Families come in all shapes and sizes. It’s fairly common for children to have two homes or two families or to have one parent or a step parent. By Tara McGowan In Australia lots of children experience their parent’s separation. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 43 % of marriages end in divorce. About 50% of these divorces will involve children under the age of 18, so over 50,000 children are affected by divorce every year. And, that’s not counting all the children whose parents weren’t legally married before the separation. So there are many children out there who are trying to make sense of their parents’ separation and adjust to changes in their family situation. Sometimes children can adjust to these changes easily, becoming resilient and adaptable young people, but other times they may need help bouncing back and adjusting to the change. Some of the common reactions for children whose parents are separating include difficulties in adjusting to having two homes to live in with different rules and routines, struggling to know what to tell their friends, blaming themselves for the separation and even fantasizing about their parents getting back together. They may also feel responsible for one parent’s feelings or a loyal to one particular parent. Or they might just feel stuck in the middle. Children can also feel confused and anxious about how their life will now look and who will tuck them in at night or take them to their rugby match as well as feeling anxious about meeting a whole new set of family

members. With support, children can make sense of these changes and adjust healthily. Parental separation does not always result in a lasting negative impact upon children, but ongoing parental conflict is what causes the most damage to children’s development.

Children experiencing parental separation need to be told that:

Parental separation, no doubt, has an impact upon children but if children are supported to make sense of these changes and all the feelings that go along with it, they can adjust and become resilient young people. Children can learn to better understand their emotions and experiences and protect themselves – both physically and emotionally. With this ability to protect themselves they can build healthy relationships with parents, siblings, step parents, step siblings, peers and community members.

• It’s definitely not their fault • Their parents still love them very much • They can’t get their parents back together • They can try to get answers • The hardest changes usually work out eventually • They still have a real family • Some things are often much better after the separation • It’s their parents’ job to sort things out • Their Mum and Dad may have separated but they still love you and it is ok for you to keep loving them Children need to know that they can’t do anything about their parents’ big decision to separate. But they can find ways to take care of themselves throughout the period of change, like staying involved with fun activities. It’s also a good idea to have a calendar or communications book so routines are easy to follow between two homes and create their own special space in each home. This may sound silly, but believe me, you will save a lot of time by making all your phone calls at one time, or doing your chores all at once, rather than bits here and there. Solar power has been in the news a lot recently, but is it really worth the initial investment to switch over? According to local Cairns solar power company, Infinity Solar, the answer is a resounding yes. “With solar power you really can save money on your electricity bills and save the environment – so both your wallet and the planet will thank you,” said Infinity’s Mark Delaney.

We all know the dangers of skin cancer so it’s important to have mole scans to check the skin for abnormal spots or growths. The symptoms you should be looking for are strange discoloured or “different” spots on your skin. Are they changing or growing, becoming more noticeable? Mole scans are available at many GP clinics and they now have the ability to track changes to the skin and detect whether skin growths are dangerous or not.

Sleep apnea is a condition where you basically stop breathing for short periods of time within your sleep. This leads to a lack of oxygen to the brain which can lead to many potentially serious conditions such as increased BP along with constant lethargy from poor sleep. Snoring is a common symptom as well as tiredness or not feeling refreshed on waking. It’s more prevalent in those that are overweight but not always. Talk to your GP if you suffer from these symptoms since this is now a very treatable condition.

Cold sores are embarrassing and uncomfortable and they are one of the most common transmitted viruses, infecting at least 70% of the world’s population. By Matthew Calanna They originate from a herpes simplex virus and are sometimes called the ‘kissing virus’ because they are caught by being in contact with the saliva of someone who has been infected. The infection is highly contagious and can spread not only by kissing or facial contact but also via general household items such as face towels, straws, cutlery and razor blades. They can be triggered by stress, illness, sunburn, windburn, UV light including tanning salons, some food allergies and excessive rubbing of the skin. Cold

Ingredients • 500g (1lb) lean chicken mince • 1 medium red (Spanish) onion • 1 medium carrot, grated • 1 cup (225g/7oz) fresh dense wholegrain breadcrumbs • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric • 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 8 fresh mint leaves

• Avoid sharing cutlery, glasses, water bottles, towels, face washers & razors. • Avoid triggers such as sunlight, tanning salons, windburn & dry lips.

There are two types of product available for the treatment of cold sores: • Lysine – an amino acid based supplement that subdues the herpes simplex virus & reduces the number & severity of outbreaks. • Anti-viral creams such as Zovirax which work particularly well if applied regularly as per the recommended dosage & applied during the early stages of the infection.

The best way to deal with a cold sore is to keep them dry and clean; this tends to speed up the healing time to a number of days rather than weeks and can be achieved by using lip balms or Vaseline.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 12 small croissants, cut up into pieces

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 3/4 cup milk

• 1 small egg

• 1/4 cup caster sugar

• 1 cup milk

• Handful of white chocolate melts

• 250g any cold meat • 1/4 cup parsley

Method [1] Sift flour and salt into a bowl.

To learn how to do a scorpion there are some stretches to help you perfect this safely on the ground. Perform a split, with one leg straight out in front of you, knee and toes facing up. Your back leg should be stretched out behind you, with the knee and toes facing toward the floor. Arch your back and lean back toward your back leg. Bend the knee of your back leg to bring your foot up toward your head. Make sure your back leg is straight out behind you, not off to one side. Use your hand to pull your foot toward your head, if needed. Hold this position. The idea is to resemble a scorpion, with the raised leg behind you resembling the stinger.

How to do a scorpion

Another way to practice a scorpion is to perform a table scorpion. Use a table which is the same level as your hips. Place one of your legs (the one which you are going to pull into the scorpion) straight on the table so that the knee is downwards on the table. Bend your knee, bring your foot up and pretend you are doing a normal scorpion. Try not to bend your body too much. Hi Everyone. It’s me, Jemma, from Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve.

Guess what? We have a new baby in our family. It’s a Pigmy Hippo and sooo cute! He was born on Thursday 6th August and he is very small. His Mother, Fluffy, is taking very good care of him. Pigmy Hippos are a very rare and critically endangered species in the wild so to be able to see one of these is very special. The new baby will stay very close to his mother for the first year but he’s already swimming around by himself and spends lots of time sleeping in the sun.

PAK Facts Did you know? Why the happy face? Clownfish can grow to be from 2 to 5 inches long. The males tend to be significantly smaller than the females. However, there are various types of clownfish that range in colours from blue to yellow. Clownfish live in a “symbiotic” relationship with certain anemones. This means they benefit from living with the sea anemone, and the sea anemone benefits from the presence of the clownfish. They are the only fish that are able to live in sea anemones and not get stung by their tentacles. Clownfish are very active fish and are extremely aggressive. Because they are quite active, the clownfish are thought to be “clowning around”. They defend their territory and the sea anemone that they live in. Clownfish eat the leftovers from fish on the anemone and algae. The leftovers include copepods, isopods and zooplankton. Far too small to be hunted by man for food, clownfish have lived undisturbed in the coral reefs for thousands of years. But more recently, they have become extremely popular as saltwater aquarium fish. The brightly colored species command a high price in europe and the united states. Collectors, realizing the demand, have destroyed many reefs in search of prime specimens, often damaging or killing the host anemones in the process. Fortunately, many local governements have imposed restrictions on the number of the clownfish that can be taken from their habitats and the means by which they can be taken. And, because clownfish are a big attraction with snorkelers and scuba divers, the tourist industry has an interest in protecting them and ensuring that they be allowed to live and breed safely on the reefs.

Clownfish also feeds on planktonic crustaceans and algae that live in or grow on the reef. They live in the warmer waters of the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. They are also found in northwest Australia, southeast Asia, Japan and the Indo-Malaysian region. There are no clownfish in the Caribbean.

EXHIBITIONS for CHILDREN

Elimination communication is a centuries-old method of toilet training that is popular with many parents, particularly those who practise attachment parenting because they are with their babies 24 hours a day. The parent uses timing, signals, cues and intuition to help an infant address his or her elimination needs, partially or completely avoiding the use of nappies. The term “elimination communication” (EC) was devised by Ingrid Bauer who travelled to India and Africa and noticed mothers carrying their babies without nappies, yet she saw no elimination “accidents”. Subsequently she raised her own children with minimal use of nappies and wrote a book about her experiences. Most parents teach their baby to eliminate in to their clothing and then re-teach them not to later on. EC avoids teaching them bad habits in the first place so babies are toilet trained much quicker.

of patience and persistence, and using baby sign language to communicate, he was able to go without nappies much sooner than other babies. Most mums practising EC do use nappies part-time so their homes are not littered with baby poo or pee puddles. Here’s a scenario that every parent has witnessed: Baby is sitting in their high chair and finishing off a lovely meal of mashed veges when they get a look on their face, and soon they start straining. Most parents watch and laugh at their baby’s grunts and red face as they proceed to mess their nappy. But a parent practising EC will take this opportune moment to get them out of the high chair and on to a toilet, potty or bowl so the baby learns where to do number twos. Watching for signs from your baby is one of the first ways to start EC and as baby gets older you work at getting them to communicate when they need to go. Charndra Pike has created a website about her EC experiences with her son and offers plenty of information for those new to the idea. “EC is about gently supporting their instinctual awareness of their body and attempting to understand them, and helping them feel ‘relieved’... it uses nappies as a tool, rather than a necessity,” she said. Charndra says it has been a lot of fun to realise how smart babies really are. “It is rewarding to interact daily in such a positive way,” she said, “and it is also really cool to ‘talk’

non-verbally with my baby and have another way to respond to his needs.” The benefits of EC are obvious - it costs less, no more nappy rash, less washing and fewer nappy changes - positive results if you have the commitment to give it a go.

I did find at one stage that they started smelling a bit but when I called Nurture Nappies for advice I discovered I was using too much washing powder so the problem was soon fixed.

Reusables can be used from birth until your baby is toilet trained and they are one size fits all. Both of the brands that I am using are adjustable in width, but the Bum Genius is adjustable as the baby grows in height too. They also fit easily under clothes and are nowhere near as bulky as traditional cloth nappies. Overall I’ve only had one or two little mishaps (nothing would have kept those monsters in if you catch my drift!) and the experience has been very positive, even though I occasionally lapse and use the odd disposable if I’m feeling lazy! I am definitely a fan of reusables - they are better on the environment, are saving us money in the long term, especially as we plan on having more children, and are chemical free when washing appropriately. Every nappy counts, so even if you only use one reusable a week, thats still 52 nappies a year that don’t end up in landfill, not to mention the savings.

We felt as though we had been placed in some file marked “Not requiring a drip or anything” and by the time we were finally ushered into a waiting room the labour had completely stopped. Eventually a nurse came in and examined my wife and told us that we were experiencing a kind of warm up dress rehearsal called Braxton-Hick’s contractions. These are Nature’s ultimate practical joke, a biophysical “boy who cried wolf”. We were informed that the baby could be born in a week or two, and that we could go home. She asked me what I was hoping for. “A complete and lasting world peace” I said. She gave me a look I sometimes get. “Oh! we were kind of hoping for a baby.”

“Hello, Kirwan Women’s Hospital.” said a voice on the other end of the phone. “My wife is in labour.” I announced in a voice that I hoped sounded calm and in obvious control but which came out sounding like a cross between a mewling kitten and a Melbourne Cup race caller freaked out on caffeine. “Is this her first child?” inquired the female voice. “No it’s her husband.” I said “But if you’d like to wait a few minutes, judging by her contractions, I reckon her first child should be along any minute.” “You’ll both be fine. Stay calm, you’ve got plenty of time,” said the voice. It might as well have been coming from the other end of the universe. I know she was trying to make me feel better but I found myself wondering how she could tell from the other end of a telephone how far along the birth canal our baby was. Her composure was making me feel agitated: “Should I bring my wife in now or wait until I see a head or something?” When we arrived at the hospital, we were told to wait in the

An hour and a half later another nurse was asking me: “Would you like to cut the cord?” as our son lay in front of me on a table complete with all manner of plumbing. I was handed a device that resembled somebody’s attempt to design a pair of scissors out of a spoon. As I looked at this biological supply line in front of me I felt like I should have had an appropriate statement ready that captured the depth of the moment. What should I say as I cut my son’s umbilical cord? “I hereby declare this bridge open” or something like “You are hereby granted your physiological independence.” Perhaps something simple like “Welcome to life kid.” would do the trick. What I actually said was “This thing’s blunt!” Let me tell you something about umbilical cords. They are tough - really tough and the implement I was wielding seemed somewhat duller than I would have presumed for surgical equipment. It was like trying to cut a knife with a cheesecake. After a few moments, our newborn son Benjamin was brought to us clean, dry and wrapped in blankets. He looked up into my eyes from my arms and went to sleep. A couple of hours later I left the hospital exhausted. When I departed, my son was understandably sleeping like a baby and my wife was understandably sleeping like she’d had one. It was now 8 o’clock in the morning. I went home and slept myself into fatherhood.

In search of wallabies, possums and the elusive platypus we recently set off with ‘Gone Wild Safari tours’ and from the moment the tour began we were learning and discovering all sorts of amazing things about our own region thanks to our tour guide Warren. The Gone Wild tour passes through 6 different forest systems. Our first stop was the Kuranda Range lookout where binoculars are supplied for everyone to check out the view. Beyond Kuranda we passed through both wet and dry eucalypt forests before coming to the more typical outback landscape. Along the way we stopped at the quaint roadside store, known simply as ‘the Termite’, and sampled some of their local produce including honey, macadamias, handmade soaps and fruit and vegetables grown in the nearby area. Next we headed to Granite Gorge, the home of the endangered Mareeba Rock Wallaby, found only in this area. This species has actually benefited from human contact since daily visitors and an onsite caravan park have deterred natural and introduced predators from attacking them. Humans have also ensured a ready food supply which has allowed the wallabies to raise their joeys safely and

build their population up to more viable levels. There are very few places like this where you can interact so closely with wild wallabies and the children loved it. From Granite Gorge we went to Bonadio’s Rainforest reserve, a private property which has the rare Notophyll or small leafed rainforest. The Bonadio family is working towards revegetating and protecting the forest and unique animal species found here. This beautiful property can only be accessed by Gone Wild tours. On arrival we were greeted by a birds of prey demonstration. The boys actually got to hold a barn owl and we saw a buzzard, a wedge tailed eagle, a lesser sooty owl and a rare rainforest quoll. We’d never seen a quoll before so we were fascinated by this beautiful yet dangerous little creature. The highlight of our adventure was searching for the secretive platypus. It was just on sunset, the best time for platypus spotting, and we were told we had to be very quiet as we walked along the high riverbank peering down to the water below. It wasn’t long before we spotted one though, swimming along the top of the water as it took a breath before

diving down again. We were lucky enough to see three platypus in total before it was time to head back to the farm for our barbeque dinner. After dinner we enjoyed a singalong before heading out on a nightwalk through the rainforest. The children were each given their own torches and we saw lots of possums, an owl and even a musky rat kangaroo as we followed the path through the forest. After such an exciting day the kids went straight to sleep on the drive home! The Gone Wild Safari tour is a great day out for families. The group sizes are small and there is so much unique native wildlife to see that the children were kept engaged and interested for the whole tour. with acrylic paints. You could mix a little PVA glue with the paint (about 1 part PVA to 2 parts paint) which helps keep it tough and shiny. Give your salt dough hanging master piece a spray with varnish to protect it from the humidity.

Baking the Dough: This is Mum’s job!

• Put all the ingredients into mixing bowl. • Squeeze the mixture together. • Pat it into a ball. • Roll it out using your rolling pin. Now have a play. Roll your dough, squash it, and pinch it. Find objects around the house that can you can use to decorate your dough in different ways. Rake it with an old comb, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes at 180OC. Place your shapes on a baking tray. Keep your shapes small and chunky. If the shapes are too big, they will take longer to cook. If they are too delicate they could break more easily. Remember to allow cooling before painting. Be very careful of the hot paper clip. When the dough has been baked and cooled, you can paint it and decorate it

How about creating your own wrapping paper for your perfect gift? All you need is some old newspaper or butchers paper and paints. You could use your very own hand prints to decorate the paper, or make splatter designs using your paintbrushes. Get creative. Here are some of our favourite quotes that you could write in Dad’s card: “A father carries pictures where his money used to be” “Dad, you’re someone to look up to no matter how tall I’ve grown” Or you could write your own. Think of a special time that you remember and write about that. If you’re too little to write, then maybe an adult could help you.

As a young teenager I really wanted to ride bikes but my father thought it wasn’t the right thing for a young girl to do. As soon as I was able to afford it I bought a Yamaha WR 200 and began trail riding in the bush. This was the start of my passion for dirt bikes. In 2003, as a 23 year old I competed in my first motocross event run by The Cairns Motorcycle Club at Mirriwinni. I came third and was hooked. Over the next three years I continued to compete in local motocross events and had some great results including Senior Club Champion (yes I beat all the men!) at Mareeba. Dirt bike racing has traditionally been a male dominated sport but the female sector of the sport is rapidly growing and I am actively involved in encouraging young female riders. I’ve organised several women’s trail rides and I’m currently planning a beginner’s ride day to promote confidence and develop skills in women aged 13 and up which is aimed at increasing female participation in riding events.

Dirt bike riding is an excellent sport for children since it promotes confidence and coordination as well as determination to succeed. In addition to that it also gives them valuable mechanical skills. The first step for a child wanting to get involved is to join a local club and participate in practice days. The Cairns Motorcycle Club in Edmonton have “Come and Try days” which allow the kids to ride on the track before they join the club. Last month 70 new riders came along and the day was a huge success. Practice days are held at the Cairns Club most Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Lessons and coaching are available (dates are always advertised on the club websites at www.cairnsmotorcycleclub. com.au). For a great family day out, the next club day at Cairns Motorcycle Club (Thomson Rd, Edmonton) is Sunday 13 September. In the last 2 years my focus has changed to endurance dirt bike racing and I now participate in both Pony Express and Enduro events on my brand new KTM200 (thanks to Wayne Leonard

Motorcycles). I am passionate about this style of racing and in order to improve I have had to travel further afield. Last November I competed in the final round of the Queensland Enduro series in Goomburra and I finished second in the State. I then competed in the women’s class at the Australian 4 Day Enduro Championships held in Orange, NSW in April 2009 where I placed a credible 7th in a field of very experienced Australian competitors. Next year my goal is to compete in several events (most of which are in SE Queensland or further afield) so that I may be considered for selection for the Australian team that will be competing in the 2010 International 6-Day Enduro. Charlie McFarland (Paul Hogan) is a man in his late 60s who suffers a devastating loss and withdraws into his grief.

Blue Sky Brewery Bar & Restaurant is a world-class venue located right in the heart of Cairns on Lake Street. It is of course father friendly, but surprisingly, it is also family friendly. As the name suggests, Blue Sky Brewery is home to ten premium handcrafted beers brewed on site, giving you a full flavoured, preservative free, naturally brewed 100% Cairns beer. The Blue Sky’s main feature is the Brewery itself although there’s also two function rooms, a VIP Oak room, the restaurant, the Main Bar and Blue Bar. They also do brewery tours 3 times a day at 11am, 4pm and 6pm which are $10 for adults and free for kids. Head in on a Sunday though and the tours are free. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced with meals for lunch and dinner ranging from $12-$30.Kids meals are only $8 which includes a soft drink. The top two menu favourites are their reef fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce which is absolutely divine, and the Potted Pie made with tender chunks of beef and root vegetables in a yummy sauce made with their True Blue Stout. We also tried the prawn spring rolls and the Caesar salad topped with calamari which where both fantastic. They have a range of salads on offer plus steaks, pizza, pasta, schnitzels and seafood. They can also cater for coeliac and vegetarians on request. Lunch is served daily from 11.302.30pm and dinner from 5pm. The snack menu runs all day. The thing that distinguishes the Blue Sky menu is the fact that it is cleverly matched with their beers. I had a taste of the ginger

Boots convinces his reluctant father to take a fishing trip with him, but it is not until they are on their way does he confess that they are not actually going to fish at their favourite local spot, but off the top of Australia at Cape York - 3,000 miles away!

During the week Blue Sky have theme nights: Wednesdays are trivia night with a twist and Thursdays are Wing Pong with 50 cent wings and ping pong tables. Blue Sky is great for a well earned Dad’s night out but they now also have a family day on Sundays when kids eat free with every paying adult. One Sunday a month is super-special Sunday with animal visitors from the Dome so kids get to touch baby crocs, snakes and other animals. The next family day coincides with Fathers Day so make sure you book a table. I can’t think of a better place to go on Father’s Day; he can enjoy a great meal, try a few beers and go on the free brewery tour whilst the kids get up close with some native animals. So don’t buy dad socks this year, take him for a yummy lunch that the whole family can enjoy.
