Internet safety Story thanks to Shannon du Plessis

Like many working parents, I spend a great deal of my time at a desk in front of a computer, both at home and at the office. As a consequence we are influencing our young children who sit on our laps, tug at our leg and generally want to do just what Mummy or Daddy is doing. Whether your child is a toddler or a teenager, computers and the internet are going to be present in their lives for years to come so it’s important to make children “net savvy” from a young age. The internet allows anyone, of any age, to access all kinds of useful services but it’s also a portal for violent, offensive and sexually explicit material that you would not want any child to see. To help families create a safe online environment, the Australian Government assisted in establishing Cybersmart. The Cybersmart (www. cybersmart.gov.au) site is a national cyber safety education program managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Cybersmart enables children, parents, carers, teachers and library staff to manage online risks, so their experiences are safe and positive. It offers a wealth of information and resources about cyber safety issues for parents.

Wide Bay Australia Story by Sally-Anne Fairley, Cairns Area Manager

contents insurance? The losses incurred by families just like yours in last year’s bushfires were heartbreaking. Homes, businesses, treasured pets and human lives were gone in minutes and there was little or nothing that could have been done to lessen the impact of the disaster. Closer to home the effects of Cyclone Larry which hit Innisfail more than four years ago are still being felt by much of the local community. Natural disasters happen. We can’t prevent them but we can prepare for them. One of the ways we can be prepared is to ensure we’re adequately insured. This will minimise the effect a disaster may have on your family and hasten the recovery period. Most home owners, but certainly not all, have some form of home building cover. As long as they’re not under-insured this will allow them to rebuild their home if it suffers significant damage. More often than not this is coupled with a home contents policy that will allow them to replace items in the home as well. Statistically however, people who are renting are far less likely to have home contents insurance, particularly if they are living in a unit or flat. This is despite the fact that they are just as likely to

10

www.pakmag.com.au

experience an event that could result in a claim as any homeowner. Just as important as actually having insurance to cover your belongings is the level of insurance you need. Think about what’s in your home furniture, white goods, clothing, children’s toys etc. Perhaps you don’t think its worth all that much but just imagine if you had to go out today and replace it all. How much would it cost you and could you afford it? Most insurance companies provide tools to act as a guide to what level of cover you may need. Once you have calculated your sum insured figure you have an opportunity to consider the type of policy that might suit your lifestyle and budget. Typically two types of policy are offered: 1) an Insured Events policy that covers you for specific events such as fire and storm and 2) an Accidental Loss and Damage policy that covers you for insured events plus a range of additional benefits including cover for your property away

from the home. It is worthwhile discussing both options with your insurer to make sure you get a policy that suits you. So who needs Home Contents insurance? We all do. Home owner or not, we should all have the right policy with a sum insured sufficient to replace everything we have worked so hard to acquire for our family. Take the time to review yours if you have one or investigate your options if you don’t. Hopefully you will never be in a position to suffer a major loss but should that occur at least your insurance policy will aid you in starting to replace what you have lost.

It is vitally important that our children have access to clean, fresh, wholesome, affordable and tasty food. The freshest food is local food. Food from the earth; not wrapped in plastic from a store. The most local is our own backyard, a school or community garden or growers’ co-op. We are blessed here in the Far North to be living right in the “food bowl” of Queensland. Certified Organic grocery items – food, home and personal care items – do not contain residue of the harmful chemicals that the EPA considers to be carcinogens (60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% of all insecticide). These chemicals are designed to kill living organisms. In humans, they are implicated in cancers, birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutations. Not only are our families at risk, but our country’s farmers, their families, their neighbours and all living creatures around farms are also at risk. Certified Organic products are not only made without the use of synthetic chemicals and irradiation, they are also GMO-free and don’t contain harmful preservatives or artificial ingredients. Children are particularly at risk from these residues, processes and additives because the levels of safety are set at an adult level. A study of young children in New York showed that those who didn’t eat organic food had over 300 different chemicals in their urine. Those who did eat organic had about 12. It’s what’s missing from Certified Organic products that make them good for you.

Exercise and talking to other people about your feelings are important strategies for helping new mums cope in the early days. Nutritional deficiencies are also a factor with PND so keep taking multi-vits after birth and eat a diet rich in Omega-3 fats (oily fish inc. salmon). St John’s Wort is a natural anti-depressant which can be used while breastfeeding to alleviate depression, anxiety, nervousness and restlessness.

Well, the federal election has been and gone, but it’s not the end of party politics. I’m talking about the serious stuff…what to do for junior’s birthday party! It can be complicated. Do I invite the whole class? Do I invite all the children who have invited my child to their party? It’s enough to drive you crazy and that’s before you even consider what to do for the party itself. I’ve just done the rounds of some great kid’s 5th birthday parties – smorgasboards of food, jumping castles, magicians, ponies and the list goes on. Mind you, this is all fairly tame compared to some of the parties thrown by some of New York’s elite where it’s not uncommon for kids to celebrate with a sleepover at legendary 5th Avenue toy store FAO Schwarz (starting at $25,000). Me, I say hooray for a few chocolate crackles and cupcakes in the back yard…although that jumping castle did look like fun!

It’s always a good to get everyone involved in setting up camp, so give the kids some easy jobs to do like pumping up the lilos, unrolling the sleeping bags and setting up the camp chairs. Everyone will probably be eager to explore their new surroundings, so go for a walk as a family and lay out the ground rules then of when, where and what the kids can explore on their own.

meals, so you really have to be prepared to cook where you set up camp. Things like tinned soup, pasta, pasta sauce in jars, packets of noodles, tinned salmon and tuna, tins of sweet corn, beetroot and other tinned salad items are good for easy to prepare meals. Breakfast is simple with boxes of cereal, long life milk, pancake mix, eggs and bread for toast on the barbecue. Boxes of fruit are good for active kids who are always hungry, and things like muesli bars, rice crackers, nuts,

daddy diary 17 Potts, one half of the Sea FM morning crew, continues his chronicles of first time fatherhood YAY! We survived the first year of Noah’s life with only a few issues on the way: lack of sleep, no social life and a new found love of rusks. Despite these we wouldn’t have it any other way; Noah has definitely changed our lives for the better. People always say the first year goes really fast. It might look that way from the outside, but when you’re in the trenches dodging nappy bombs and spew grenades it’s seems like a very slow year. Kylie had been planning Noah’s first birthday party for quite a few months. We held the party in a park but it was quite windy so there were balloons and streamers all over the place. It looked more like the changing rooms after a football grand final. Noah thought he’d arrive fashionably late. We loaded him on to his new bike that I had excitedly put together the previous night, and pushed him in for his grand entrance. It was a bit overwhelming seeing 20 odd people standing around cheering him in so he promptly burst in to tears and balled his eyes out. But, at least he managed to avoid falling off his bike and spewing on his brand new birthday clothes. Eventually he settled down and opened a few presents and ate some yummy birthday food. It was a huge day for him. He went to bed an hour early and slept for 13 hours which gave the big kids some time to enjoy a few birthday drinks for themselves and celebrate keeping him alive for a whole year!

God be with you Little 2 1/2-year-old Kelli went with a neighbor girl to church for First Communion practice. To demonstrate the process, the pastor has the children cup their hands, and when he gives them the “Host” (in this case, a piece of bread) he says: “God be with you.”

Apparently this made quite an impression on Kelli. She came home and told her mother to cup her hands and bend down. Kelli tore a piece of bread from her sandwich, placed it in her mother’s hands, and whispered, in her most angelic voice: “God will get you”.
