I believe many mums silently fear they might not be ‘good enough’ so I created The Imperfect Mum - a place where mums can express their fears without feeling judged and talk about anything from the real heavy stuff right down to toilet training. The focus of The Imperfect Mum blog is to lift the lid on the ‘real stuff’, both good and the bad. I want mothers to know they are not alone. I want there to be a safe place for them to go if they need to.

Step Families

Modern families Story thanks to Amanda Cranston

In 2010 stepfamilies outnumbered first families in Britain and America, with one in every three people being a ‘step’ of some kind whether that be a step-parent, step-brother, step-sister or step-child. One of Australia’s highest profile psychologists and author of new book Surviving Step Families, Michael Carr-Gregg, says that by 2020 Australia will reach a parity with America and Britain.

Michael says the simplest definition of a step

of the married couple have pre-existing children who live with them, and he defines a blended family as one in which the husband and/or wife’s children plus their combined children live together. He explains that when it comes to step families we often tend to think of the Brady Bunch and the harmonious way their families blended. “I call this the Brady Delusion as it lulls many unsuspecting would-be couples who decide to embark on this endeavour into thinking it is a lot easier than it looks,” Michael says. “This book was actually born out of my own stuff ups because I too am a stepfather and even with all my qualifications I made all the mistakes. I tried to be an instant dad and a disciplinarian and it didn’t work.” Michael says the first two years are always the hardest as everyone is adjusting to their place within the family, and his advice is that couples should put their relationship first so they are united and strong. He also suggests leaving the discipline to the biological parent and the step parent supporting and backing up that parent and only stepping in when the biological parent is not present. He says step parenting can be very

Michael points out that many step mothers also have to contend with the negative evil step mother stereotype that we all read about while growing up. Stories like Cinderella, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel all had evil step mothers. “Anyone familiar with fairytales knows that stepmothers are depicted as wicked, cruel and uncaring. They steal the father’s attention from the children or are so jealous

to sit down with their children and make them understand that just because they don’t love each other anymore, they still love their children and make them understand that the break-up had nothing to do with them. • Will your child enjoy playing with it? Learning needs to be fun to retain their attention and to keep them going back to play with it. • Is it safe for the particular age group you are buying for?

These are some examples of some good educational toys: [1] Puzzles We have a huge range of puzzles at Harleys because they have many educational benefits. Puzzles improve problem solving and reasoning skills as well as physical skills like hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Some types of puzzles like peg puzzles can help teach little ones to pick up and grasp pieces and they aid in the development of the pincher grasp.

[2] Mobilo (3-8 year olds) Mobilo is a mobile construction system allowing children to build, construct and develop their imagination by making creations such as cars, boats, skyscrapers, cranes and planes. By playing with Mobilo children can learn to grasp, stack and balance. It’s a great gift because you can keep adding to it.

Hama beads help improve fine motor control as well as helping with learning colour, shape, pattern, counting, design concepts and pattern following. They are an easily stored craft material that lends itself to a wide variety of themes and exploration.

Question: My husband has had an affair after 11 years of marriage. I have decided to leave him and would like to move out, but I can’t afford to pay half the mortgage and rent somewhere else. Recipe thanks to: the Stocker Family

• Whole fruit cake (we use dark but light works as well) • Alcohol - we use sherry but rum is also good • White chocolate melts • Glazed cherries

Method Break the whole cake up in to little bits into a bowl, pour alcohol over the cake (I never measure but so it makes it moist but not soggy). Cover in Plastic Cling Wrap and set aside for a day or two. Then take teaspoons of the mixture and roll into balls until all the cake mixture is used. Cut the Glazed cherries into quarters. Melt your white chocolate buttons, then put a small dollop of white chocolate on top of each ball with a piece of cherry on each. You can also cut up Mint Leave lollies and place along side if you want to get really fancy. Refrigerate. They look great presented in mini patty pans.

Australia is currently undergoing a resurgence of whooping cough (pertussis). Two infants have died from whooping cough since September last year, and more than 8500 cases have been recorded in the past quarter - double the average rates over the past five years. Dr Stephen Lambert, of the Queensland paediatric infectious diseases laboratory at Brisbane’s Royal Children’s Hospital, said that an important part of tackling the resurgence was increasing the uptake of booster doses in adults, especially those who come in to contact with babies. This is because immunity levels drop substantially in the years following the initial vaccinations. Previously it was thought that pertussis immunity would last at least 10 years but recent research suggests it may only last half that long.

Currently Australia’s immunisation schedule recommends whooping cough vaccination at 2, 4 and 6 months, and again at 4 years of age. A booster shot is recommended for 15-17 year olds.

AWESOME

Swimwear Choosing your child’s swimmers is a breeze compared to finding your own, but finding a great fitting swimsuit can make all the difference to your poolside confidence.

Trilby’s Makeover

[3] Fit

Here are my top 4 tips for finding your perfect swimsuit:

In any swimsuit your bust should be

boosted and supported just like a great bra.

You don’t need to have amazing washboard abs for a bikini but if you prefer to hide your baby belly, choose a sleek one-piece or highwaisted styles.

Squeezing into smaller sizes can leave you with a muffin top or boob spillage so choose the right fit. Crossover styles are perfect for a bigger bust, and a skirtini is great for providing extra coverage for a larger behind.

[2] Colours

[4] Time

Choose a colour to suit your skin tone. White is a great choice to enhance almost any tan. Greens like turquoise and teal are great for redheads, purples and reds are a great option for brunettes and blondes will look great in peach, coral and most shades of blue. laugh with a local This month on facebook we’ve been talking about your funniest ever Christmas moment? From: Chantel Divers

Prize

Winner

“My family are mad about Christmas to the point where you have to wake everyone up in the house before you’re allowed to see the presents. One year all seven of us bowled into the room together to see the dog having an early lunch on the entire collection of gifts. The only thing that got ‘returned’ later in the day were my grandmothers gold earrings but funnily enough she didn’t want them!”

From: Leanne Rangitaawa “When my daughter was two, I took her Christmas shopping with me during the July toy sales because I couldn’t find a sitter. As I put the toys into the trolley, I was telling her that the items were for her little cousins. This one’s for Mia, this one’s for Payton etc.
On Christmas morning, she opened one of her presents from Santa, looked

at me and said “Mum, this isn’t mine. This is Mia’s” and promptly threw it to the side. She still, almost two years later, tells me that Santa gave her the wrong presents!”

From: Su Corea “As per tradition, in our family we always cooked symbolic items in to the Christmas pudding (ring=imminent wedding, thimble=not likely to ever marry, coin=rich man etc). It all seemed like harmless fun until the year my great-grandmother choked on the thimble and my granduncle had to thump her until the thimble popped out. I was nine at the time and had to go to the bathroom to laugh my guts out. Needless to say no-one baked anything in to the pudding after that.” From: Sandra Stocker “When I was a kid my family always played cards after Christmas lunch. One of my grandmothers ALWAYS won.

During one session she needed a loo break so while she was away we decided to stack the cards to give us a better chance of winning. She knew we were up to something because none of us could keep a straight face but guess what? She still won!”

From: Kellie Doeblien

“As a child my dad would always set up a prank at Christmas. One of the funniest times was when he sewed a huge sack and wrapped lots of different household items in it to make it look like Santa had given him lots of presents. I never slept much at all on Christmas Eve and would always go out and look and feel presents. So, of course I started feeling the top of Dads sack, only to have my fingers snapped in rat traps on both hands!!!”

Next month’s question: What’s the funniest thing you’ve got your kids doing so you can take a rest during the holidays? Email your answers to “Laugh With A Local” with your name and number to info@pakmag.com.au by December 15 and you could WIN a $50 Stockland Voucher!
