02 publishers note Hello and welcome to the 50th edition of PakMag. Well, if you haven’t already read about it on our Facebook page, I am now the proud mum of two boys. Sean arrived in such a hurry that Trent almost had to deliver him but luckily nan and the paramedics arrived just in time. So my second experience of childbirth was wonderfully quick but I never imagined giving birth in my bedroom in front of two strange blokes and my mother-in-law! Thanks to Danny and Glen (the paramedics) for their help and Nan for cleaning up afterwards!

Grand parents Story thanks to Elaine Seager
generation gap Most grandparents love their role in the family – they’ve done all the hard yakka of raising their own kids and now they can sit back and enjoy quality time with their grandchildren. How often do we hear the quip about them getting to have all the fun and then being able to hand them back when they’ve had enough? These days though, handing them back is not so easy with many grandparents taking a more active role in the raising of grandchildren. While there are no official figures it has been estimated that modern grandparents provide as much as 50% of childcare in Australia. The increase in single parent families, mums going back to work and the cost of formal childcare causes many to rely, at least in part, on family members to share the responsibility. Whilst there are obvious benefits to this arrangement, including the fact that the children are being looked after by people who genuinely care about them, there are both positive and negative aspects for the grandparents. On the one hand it provides them with an opportunity to build a close bond with their grandchildren but on the other, caring for young children again after all these years can be both physically and mentally challenging. Research has shown that grandparents’ degree of satisfaction with this caring role is related to the amount of communication and negotiation that occurs within the family. Clear agreements and boundaries obviously need to be set up beforehand to prevent any tensions occurring. Grandparents are at the time of life where they value their free time too so whilst they’re happy to help their children out they are also sensitive to being ‘put upon’ and used as unpaid babysitters. Of course, not all grandparents are the same. Some grandparents gladly jump at the chance to be involved and love feeling needed again; for others burping and changing nappies doesn’t quite fit with their dreams for retirement and can limit their social life (it’s not quite so easy for
12

grandparents to meet their friends for a coffee with a 3 year old pulling at their ankles). Parents may also need to be especially considerate of younger grandparents who are still working themselves, since they can end up juggling responsibilities just as much as the parents. Whatever role the grandparents in your family play there’s no denying that children who are lucky enough to have a bond with their grandparents benefit greatly from the extra love and encouragement they receive through this special relationship. Seniors Week is 20-28 August. The Council will be running a ’Seniors Got Talent’ competition. Whether it’s singing, dancing, juggling or playing an instrument, seniors with a desire to perform are invited to take part. The heats start at 10am and will be held in the following locations: 4 AUG – Brothers Leagues Club, Manunda 9 AUG – Cazalys, Westcourt 10 AUG – Port Douglas Hall 10 Aug – Hambledon House, Edmonton 12 Aug – Glenmead Retirement Village, Redlynch 16 AUG – The Parks Retirement Village, Earlville 16 AUG – Mossman Shire Hall 18 AUG – Cairns Central 22 AUG – Stockland To register, call Ann on 4044 3020 or email a.lecomte@cairns.qld.gov.au with your name, contact details, preferred heat location and description of your talent. Free grandparents barbecue on the Esplanade on 26 August, during which the Talent grand final will be held. Stockland will also have a week of Seniors entertainment like Bingo, singalongs, and other games from 22-27 August 11.30-12.30 daily.
Top 10 things grandparents can do with their grandchildren: • Introduce them to different music – play your old ‘records’, sing them ‘My Generation’ and ‘When I’m 64’! • Teach them about your favourite hobbies eg. knitting, crocheting, woodwork, gardening etc • Show them your old photo albums, tell them about their family and share your life stories • Play ‘what do you know?’ games • Show them old mementoes and things you’ve collected • Do a puzzle together • Make and play with homemade toys eg. paper aeroplanes •
Write letters – today’s Gen Z’s know how to play on iphones but there’s still nothing to beat the excitement of receiving snail mail
• Keep a scrapbook of all the things you do together • Teach them how to play chess or card games

• 400g (1 cup) of rice flour
• 2 tblsp olive oil
• 400g (1 cup) of cornflour OR equivalent amounts of any gluten free flour
• 500g chicken breasts
• 400g (1 cup) salt
• 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
• 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 250g arborio rice
• 800ml (2 cups) water
• 3 cups chicken stock
• 2 tblsp vegetable oil
• 1 large head of broccoli
• Food colouring
• 1/3 cup parmesan cheese
• 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
• Sea salt & pepper
Method
Method
In a large saucepan, mix all the ingredients with a whisk to get rid of any lumps. Gently heat up for 5 mins or so, stirring to make sure no lumps form and eventually the mixture will become firm. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then knead the mixture for a couple of minutes, to ensure there are no lumps. You can now start playing with the gluten free play dough! Any creative masterpieces can be left to air-dry for a few days then painted with kid-friendly non toxic paints. As this mixture contains a huge percentage of salt, it will keep for a few months in a sealed container, and better still, will taste so disgusting, your child will be dissuaded from eating it.
Preheat oven to 180oC. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large casserole dish over high heat. Add the chicken and cook till golden brown, stirring frequently. Remove chicken and set aside. Add remaining olive oil and the onion to the dish and cook, stirring occasionally until soft. Add garlic, and lemon zest, cook, stirring for 30secs. Add rice and stir to coat in mixture. Add stock and bring to boil before covering the casserole and place in oven for 20mins. Add the broccoli to the dish and cook for a further 3-4 mins until broccoli is just tender. Stir through parmesan and season with salt and pepper.

By Julie Simpson from Awakening Therapies If we put down the superwoman suit and evaluate our busy lives we can find many reasons to feel tired. I won’t even mention the sleep deprivation! Our bodies have a few simple requirements including basic nutrition - that means more than a bite of leftover toast. Did you know amino acids (proteins) only stay in the body for a few hours? They are the building blocks of our structures and hormones and we need
to eat them often. Protein sources are fish, eggs, meat, seeds and nuts. Water is also important; it’s hard to function well when the body is dehydrated and our skin can be one of the first places to show it. Of course, we also need oxygen! When was the last time you took a deep breath? Breathing deeply floods the body with oxygen. For more specific solutions to tiredness see Julie at Awakening Therapies.

Breastfeeding mothers should also avoid tea, coffee, spicy foods and alcohol. If you’re bottle-feeding make sure the flow is not too fast.
Colic is not harmful. It is not recommended to give medication, however if you are finding it difficult to cope talk to your GP. Eliminating cows milk protein from your baby’s diet might help; this should be done for one week to see if it makes any difference. There are also a number of drops available that work by unblocking the trapped wind in the stomach when babies have swallowed air. Seek advice from your Pharmacist.

His little nappy had even soaked up the water from the urinal…yuck! (Did someone tell him it was called a cake?)”
From: Serene Lawson “I caught my almost two year old daughter munching on her dog’s old bone in the back yard”
From: Nicola King “The worst thing my daughter ate was my ‘self heating face scrub’. There was one very frantic call to the poisons centre I can tell ya!”
From: Rochelle Watt “My child ate a cigarette butt at the park when he was about seven months old, and then vomitted it back up about an hour later”
