Choosing schools Story thanks to Amanda Cranston
public or private? Statistics show that the majority of students in Australia still attend government schools, but many parents really struggle with deciding whether to go public or private. When it is time to send your first-born off to prep, just how do you choose which school is right for your child? With a growing population, enrolment places are no longer a given at childcare and kindergartens and many kids miss out on places if they’re not enrolled from birth. This is now also happening at private and independent schools and parents need to get savvy and put their child’s name down at birth just to get a place. Ridiculous as this sounds, if parents have their heart set on a particular independent school then they really need to prepare and enrol early. For parents who have chosen a government school they like, they need to find out if they live in the catchment area as more and more schools are now only accepting students who live in close proximity to the school. Parents generally don’t need to enrol until six to 12 months before the start of prep year at government schools, but it is worth enquiring earlier about enrolment prerequisites. So you are considering an independent school? Trinity Anglican School Principal at White Rock campus, Michael Daunt Watney, says parents often choose independents schools for their strong values. “They are often looking for a disciplined learning environment that is complemented by strong pastoral care and
focused personal, intellectual, emotional and spiritual outcomes that will best prepare their children for life beyond school,” he says. Many independent schools offer additional curriculum options and consistently score high on NAPLAN testing. If students are talented in particular fields then an independent school which can support this talent may be a good option, and this also may contribute to the overall decision. What are your options if you want to send your kids to a state school? Education Queensland records show that 491,450 students were enrolled in Queensland state schools in February this year, and the reasons parents send their children to government state schools are varied. Some cannot afford to send their children to independent schools, some enrol too late and battle with long enrolment lists at independent schools, some never get a place at private schools due to an enormous number of positions being filled by siblings of current students, and then there are those parents who actually prefer government state schools. They may choose a state school because it is close to home, because they went to a state school when they were younger or because they would prefer to spend the money they save on a private education for
outer school activities such as music lessons, sporting activities, ballet, martial arts or something else. It is unfortunate that many parents feel pressure trying to decide on a school because there is still a stigma among some circles that private schools are better, and feel the need to justify their choice. But what parents need to remember is that every school will try to encourage children to be the best they can be and a good teacher who nurtures creativity, imagination, play, learning and confidence, can mean a world of difference to a child’s education.
Tips for parents [1] Research your options as early as possible (even as early as your child’s birth) [2] Be aware of enrolment prerequisites such as catchment areas, religion, etc [3] Enrol as early as you can [4] Be confident in your decision and don’t be influenced by others

deciding on schools
Catholic Education Story thanks to Christine Masters
For some parents, choosing their child’s first school is as easy as geography – the one closest to home is the right one. For others, school selection can be a more complicated decision. If you’re looking beyond the local public school, think about what will work best for your child’s personality, strengths, needs and interests. You might also consider how different schools’ cultures and values sit with your family values and family life. Other factors you might consider include: • Your preference in relation to public

Harley’s Educational Story thanks to Bridget Findley
education begins at home If your child is commencing prep in 2012, you may be feeling anxious about how your child will cope emotionally and you are not alone. Many parents wonder what they can do to ensure that the transition to school is a positive experience for their child. With only six months to go until you will wave goodbye to your preppie, now is a good time to start preparing them for the classroom. Here are some ways you can help prepare them socially and emotionally: Getting along with others At school children need to be able to get along with and respect others in order to succeed. They need to be able to co-operate, negotiate, share toys, take turns, wait for a turn, show empathy to others and separate from parents. These life skills don’t come naturally so provide as many practical opportunities as you can for your child to practice these skills by exposing them to a variety of play situations. If your child does not attend childcare or kindergarten, take them to playgroups and other places where they can meet and play with other children. Playing games with your child is also one of the most valuable ways to help your child develop these skills. Many everyday family activities can be turned into a game. And remember, it’s not about winning; children also need to learn that it’s okay to not always be the winner. Some great games to play with your child are: Uno, Snap, Memory, Snakes and Ladders, Spot the difference, I Spy and Dominoes. Games can
10
www.pakmag.com.au
be modified according to the age and ability of the children playing. Other games to practise turn taking include: Musical Chairs, Stop Freeze, Duck Duck Goose, Mr Wolf & Red Red Rover.
Listening School children obviously need to be able to sit quietly and listen to the teacher so you can help prepare them for this by spending lots of time involving your child in quiet activities. When you talk to your child, also encourage them to look at you and give you their full attention. When they do this successfully, use positive praise and rewards to reinforce this desired behaviour.
Using words to resolve conflict Help your child resolve conflicts by using words not actions. When you see your child is having difficulty, use your words to describe the situation for them, for example, “I think you feel angry because Tom took the truck off you. You need to use your words instead of hitting, because hitting hurts”. Give your child an opportunity to discuss the correct behaviour
as well as the feelings and consequences for everyone involved in the conflict. “What do you think that you should have done instead of hitting Tom?” “When you hit Tom, how did that make him feel?”
Following instructions Children will also be required to follow instructions so help your child build up these skills by frequently giving them three step instructions. If your child has difficulty with this then give only one or two step instructions until they are developmentally ready to follow more complex instructions. There are so many ways that parents can prepare their children for school and give them a flying start in their education. Yummy Toffee Apples
Easy Thai Pumpkin Soup
• 10 small pink lady apples
• 1 butternut pumpkin,
• 4 cups white sugar
peeled, de-seeded & cubed
• 1 cup water
• 1 large potato, peeled & cubed
• 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
• 1 large carrot, chopped
• 2 tsp red food colouring
• 1 onion, diced
• 10 wooden sticks
• 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp chicken stock powder • Salt and pepper
Method
• Thai Basil to garnish
Wash and dry apples. Remove stems and push the sticks into the base. Set aside on a baking tray lined with baking paper. In a medium heavy based saucepan add the sugar and water over a low heat. When the sugar is dissolved, stop stirring the mixture and bring it to the boil. Use a pastry brush dipped in water to brush down any crystals that have formed on the sides of the pan and then stir in the cream of tartar and food colouring. Reduce heat to low and simmer the toffee for 20 minutes until it gets to hard crack stage. Turn off the heat and tilt your pan to dip the apples in the toffee. Stand the apples head down on the baking paper and leave to set at room temperature.
Method Heat oil in a pan and fry all vegetables until golden. Add 2L boiling water to the pan and stir in stock powder. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes until all vegetables are soft. Using a stick mixer liquefy all the soup until it’s nice and smooth, add thai basil to finish. Taste and season with salt and pepper accordingly and a garnish of Thai basil to finish.

Wardrobe wakeup Story thanks to Gerlinda Aras
Kiddie Style Is fashion making kids grow up too fast? Clothes are a great way for kids to express their creativity and individuality but in a world where celebrities dress their children as ‘minime’s and clothing stores sell bra tops for young girls, many children are losing this sense of freedom as they conform to more ‘grown-up fashions’. Dress-ups are an important part of a child’s development, and it’s totally normal for children to want to dress like mummy or daddy, but you know it’s gone too far when they want to shave their legs, apply make-up and wear a mini-skirt and high heels to leave the house.
Children have the rest of their lives to dress like adults so allow them to be themselves and use clothes as a way to play. As psychologist Suzanne Scarrow from Personal Peace Clinic says “Children need to know that they are acceptable just as they are. When they try to be different from who they really are, in an attempt to please others (get praise from others or get noticed by others), they begin to believe that they are not acceptable for who they are”.
Childhood is a time to experiment with clothes – you might think black and white stripey socks, yellow and green spotty shorts and a red top look awful but to your child they look great. And sometimes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how their odd combinations can work! Children’s clothing should reflect their sense of fun and be vibrant, playful, cheerful and innocent. As my 6 year old daughter said “my yellow dress is my favourite because it’s pretty, very comfortable, it makes me smile and it has buttons.”

It is often difficult for parents when they suspect their child has started having sex. Having an open one-on-one discussion is perhaps the best way to deal with it and you can begin by explaining to her that being in a relationship can be a great experience and that as her mother, you want to make sure that she is safe in this relationship – both emotionally and physically. Explain that there are lots of ways to show affection besides sex.

cars come with at least two front airbags, check what they have in the rear, especially if you’re looking at a car with three rows of seats. Seat belts are still the best way to keep your kids safe - proper lap-sash belts are the best rather than lap-only ones. Rear parking sensors and mounted cameras are extra features that are worth considering, we’ve all heard those tragic stories of parents accidentally running over children, and child locks prevent doors being opened whilst in transit To get an idea of the relative crashworthiness of cars in terms of their structure go to www.ancap.

The height of the car can make a big difference for accessibility, not only for the kids but also for you if you have smaller children. Taller cars tend to reduce the strain on your back from strapping the children in to their seats.

And, of course, it goes without saying that you’ll need four doors although sliding doors can be good for preventing your kids from bashing other people’s cars in the car park!
[3] Child- friendliness All cars sold in Australia must be fitted with child seat anchor points but it’s worth noting where they are located. Some hatchbacks and 4WD’s put them on the floor behind the seats which cuts in to storage space (not good if you need to load a pram in).
On-going costs are also important to consider for family budget so research comparative fuel efficiencies and ask your mechanic about how different models stack up for maintenance costs.
[5] Extras Some cars now have DVD players as a standard feature with screens in the back for kids, although make sure they’re fitted up above their heads so they don’t get carsick. Extra cupholders and storage space is also handy if you go on regular long car journeys.

I was taking my then 2yo on a trip to visit my best friend in Singapore. My son was hanging over the back of the seat as behind us was a lovely older couple and the guy was pulling faces and making him laugh and generally entertaining him so I could get some rest. The guy had him in so many stitches that he ended up puking all over them, the seat, and the floor.
