the gender divide
Surveys show that boys are falling behind when it comes to reading, so what can be done to spark their interest in the magical world of books? National literacy statistics show that 46 percent of Australians can’t read newspapers or magazines, can’t understand the instructions on a medicine bottle and can’t follow a recipe. And an international survey conducted by UNESCO across 43 countries shows girls have much higher

early reading
Catholic Education Story thanks to Christine Masters
If reading came naturally, teaching reading would be a much easier job to do because children would learn to read as readily as they learn to speak. However, children don’t learn to read just from being exposed to books, it is a skill that must be taught and for many children, it must be taught explicitly and systematically, one small step at a time. Reading is more than just being able to say the

help them learn a lot of the skills they will need for reading. When a child says “cook” and the parent says, “Would you like a cookie?” they are building the child’s knowledge of vocabulary, sentence structure, syntax, and purposes for communication — all of which will help them to develop as a reader. Singing rhymes and playing word games assist children to recognise the sounds in words (phonemic awareness). Here are some tips for developing literacy:

[2] Make sure your children read every day.
[3] Get the library habit. Make sure everyone in your family has a library card. Schedule regular trips to the library. [4] Read aloud to the children. Start reading to your children when they are young and don’t stop reading to them as they grow older; you will both enjoy the chance to do something together. Set aside some time each day for reading aloud. Even 10 minutes a day can have a big impact.
[5] Give books as gifts. Then find a special place for your children to keep their own library. [6] Make reading a privilege. Say, “You can stay up 15 minutes later tonight if you read in bed” or “Because you helped with the dishes, I have time to read you an extra story.” Remember reading is not only about books. Children need to read a variety of texts – books, magazines, websites, posters etc. Parents, teachers and caregivers all play an important role in helping children learn to read. Research shows that when families, teachers and community members share responsibility for teaching children to read, it makes a difference.

Harley’s Educational Story thanks to Kristy Vallely
As parents we are not the only mentors in our child’s life. Other people will also influence their social values and emotional development, and once they start school, their teacher becomes one of their most influential figures. It’s therefore very important to build a good relationship with your child’s teacher so here are some tips on fostering a sense of partnership with them: • Be positive, on time, and prepared for school. • Exchange email addresses with your child’s teacher and agree to keep in touch. • If time permits, offer to volunteer your time in the classroom. • Consider donating classroom supplies or a gift certificate to a store where teachers can purchase materials for the classroom. Whooping Cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial respiratory tract infection caused by Bordatella Pertussis. It starts with cold like symptoms but is characterised by bouts of severe coughing that can end with a gasping “whoop” or vomiting. The infection is somewhat susceptible to antibiotics. It is less contagious when treated but the cough may continue on for 3 months.

It’s generally a good idea to have children assessed by a Behavioural Optometrist before commencing Prep, and if no problems are found, every two years thereafter. A children’s vision assessment usually takes around 45 minutes and is best completed in the morning whilst they are still fresh rather than after school. Jane Chin is a Behavioural Optometrist at Total Optical. If you have concerns about your child’s vision call 4031 1360 for more information.
