23 publishers note Hello and welcome to the 51st edition of PakMag, our very special school holiday and Fathers Day edition. I would like to dedicate this edition to all the dads out there, especially my husband Trent who is a wonderful dad and role model for our boys, they are so lucky you’re their daddy. Life has been interesting since the arrival of number 2. It’s sure been a juggle and a learning curve during the past 6 weeks, and to be honest it’s been a blur! Was it easier the first time around, or have I become less resilient?! It certainly adds a new dimension when you have the extra burden of a toddler bringing germs home from daycare and sticking his fingers into every dirty place he can find. After weeks of broken sleep my immune system is not coping well but at least the bugs are helping me get some of my pregnancy weight off! My days are now spent pondering things like “please god, why do they both cry at the same time?” and “Why do I only have one set of arms when I clearly need three?!” Until next time, we hope you enjoy this edition of PakMag and hope to see you at our Bollywood PakClub at Cazalys on 11 September. Happy reading and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PakMag.

that the Queensland school system will need to
the National Curriculum Board with the task of designing a single national school curriculum to replace the state based ones. After three years and much public debate ACARA (the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) is finally ready to roll out the first in its three-phase program. Starting 2012, all schools in North Queensland will be teaching Preps to Year 10s from the new curriculum in the areas of English, math and science. The second phase covering history, languages, geography and the arts, will be developed in 2012 by ACARA but the timeline for implementing it is still to be decided by Ministers (probably 2014/2015). The third phase to be developed will cover health and physical education, information and communication technology, economics, business, civics and citizenship). ACARA claims the new curriculum will be world class and allow Australia to keep pace with the changing times. Critics say a national curriculum may lead to a greater emphasis on national tests like NAPLAN, which may in turn result in teachers simply ‘teaching to the test’ and schools putting greater pressure on students to perform. But what does it all mean for our children? We spoke to Lesley Englert, Queensland Board member of ACARA and guru on the national

“The new curriculum is narrower, it has less content, but there is a greater focus on the most important subjects. For example, early primary education will have a greater focus on literacy and numeracy. We are aiming for a greater depth of understanding in the core subjects rather than a superficial knowledge of lots of subjects”. Under the new curriculum there may be a shift from purely play based prep classes. An increase in more traditional teaching styles for prep classes has sparked arguments for and against in the academic community. Lesley points out that while the new curriculum outlines the content and standards to be achieved, it doesn’t specify how those should be delivered. It is her belief that play and enquiry
be adjusted to align with the rest of the nation. Because of this, Queensland Year 7 classes will be moved into high schools starting 2015 (although this may be earlier for some schools depending on facilities). Also, the amount of content covered in Year 7 will be increased. While during this transition period children will be taught as much as possible from the new curriculum, they are not expected to suddenly ‘get up to speed’. And according to Lesley there is good news for the kids in terms of homework. “Homework is an important way for children to consolidate what they are learning in school but the guidelines with regards to how much homework time children should be given by school year remains the same,” she says.
based activities are still the best way to teach younger age groups although there may be some ‘explicit’ teaching required.

However, if you ask a mum from Sweden they will tell you that they know their child will be socially, emotionally, physically and mentally more advanced than those that do not! It’s common knowledge in Sweden and now Swim Australia is conducting studies at Griffith University to confirm these benefits.

domestic sector The word “housewife” has always made me cringe and I’m obviously not the only one, if new titles like domestic engineer and CEO of the domestic sector are anything to go by. But thanks to TV’s Desperate Housewives, domestic drudgery is sounding a bit more glamorous these days. Not that my life can be compared to the likes of Susan, Gabby and Bree – or can it? The girls on Wisteria Lane awake to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I, on the other hand, usually start my day with the stench of a used nappy discarded by my bed. While they feast on seasonal fruit and freshly baked muffins courtesy of a thoughtful neighbor, I’m more likely to be finishing off the cold piece of toast left on somebody’s plate. While they drive around fashionable neighborhoods in the latest model sports cars, I’m usually doing school drop offs in my

Tickets available through Ticketlink – adults $25, school aged kids $12.50.

Children’s activities Story thanks to Amanda Cranston
Inspired by two new books with great creative ideas for kids, Amanda Cranston tries out some new craft activities for the school holidays
Faux Lino Printing p44 You will need: • Craft foam • Sharp pencil • Texta • Scissors • Water-based printing ink • Large plastic sheet (perspex or polypropylene) • Roller • Paper • Metal spoon [1] With a sharp pencil, scratch an illustration into the sheet of craft foam. Draw the picture onto the foam first in texta, then scratch over the lines with texta. Grooves need to be scratched deeply into the foam, then you can cut the foam into a shape or around your picture after you have made your illustration. [2] Roll your ink out nice and smooth so you can get a thin, even coverage on the roller.
By Carly Schwerdt, Penguin Books RRP $39.95
[3] Once the roller is evenly coated, gently roll it over the foam until the foam is evenly covered with ink. Make sure you hold it flat
while rolling so foam won’t stick to your roller. Your scratched grooves shouldn’t have any ink in them, if they do you have probably used too much ink or your grooves might not be deep enough. [4] Lay a sheet of paper on a clean surface. Carefully place the inked foam facedown onto the paper and gently smooth it flat. With the back of a spoon rub the foam in circular motions, pressing it firmly in to the paper. [5] Gently lift one corner of the foam away from the paper and peel it back, being careful not to smudge your print (it can help to hold the opposite end of the foam down as you do this). You can make many prints using your foam template, simply wash the foam and the plastic sheet and start again.

A friend of mine recently took her two young children (aged three and one) and husband camping for the first time. She thought she was well organised with two small tents and heaps of food including the all-important marshmellows. However she didn’t take a change in weather in to account. It bucketed down, the kids got sick, and the whole family had one revolting night in one tent with zero sleep. They’ve been sworn off camping ever since.

We spent our first night in the swag tent village which resembled something off a Stargate movie set, with twin triangular tents adjoined by a deck in the middle with sink, bar fridge, table and chairs. Generations of teenagers have tried hard to be seen as different from adults in the way they dress and behave. The bodgies, widgies, beatniks, rockers, hippies, bikers and surfers of past generations all belonged to subcultures with identifiable looks, ideas and attitudes. EMO (short for emotional/emotive) subculture is one of the more distinctive groups operating in Australian teen society today. Apparently what they have in common is that they display and

Let her know that you are genuinely interested in learning more about what it means to be an EMO but avoid nagging, criticising or making judgments. Concerns over the links between self harm and EMO culture were highlighted in Australia in 2007 when two 16 year old Victorian girls posted details of EMO culture on YouTube and
