36 WIN – Bump,

January is always a time for new beginnings. I am certainly wanting to make some improvements this year. So I am kicking it off with a couple of weeks off to reflect and spend quality time with the boys. I want our family to keep trying new things so I’ve booked the whole family in to get meditation lessons. Watch this space to see how that turns out! Then I think we’ll do our family goals for the year and see what we all want to achieve. Sounds nice doesn’t it. Reality is, it’s great to have a plan, but things don’t always pan out how we want. So I am hopeful that this is how my year starts and continues - we can only try, right…

39 What’s On Guide

I truly hope this year brings you everything you wish for and more, and that these two great magazines get your year off to a fantastic start.

The Thing Is

The Thing Is... STORY Bree James

Don’t you love it when you get into a tit for tat? The conversation that has turned into a competition or comparison in a hope that you are going to win or get something? It starts when someone does more, or has more and someone else notices. Then it’s a tit for tat. Some tit for tats hurt, like the big brother that hits harder after the little brother has hit him. But some tit for tatting is that competitive conversing that ‘one-ups’ constantly in an effort to win. “Tit for tat” language drives me nuts sometimes. I hear people using it all the time. My kids do it. My parents do it. My friends do it and drumroll please - I do it too. Gah! The thing is, once you realise you tit for tat or you notice that someone you know is a tit for tatterer, your tit for tatting tolerance odometer can get very low. The friend or work colleague that has to one up you on everything. If you had gastro, they nearly died from it (probably from brown nosing someone). Or if you booked a holiday to the Gold Coast they are going to America, first class of course. The children fighting over who got more ice-cream, who last emptied the dishwasher, who last fed the pets, to who got the TV remote last. Kids tit for tat better than any adult tit for tatterer I know. Your partner tit for tatting about who slept in last, who’s turn it is to get up for the kids, to who gets the most free time and who cleaned the kitchen last. Tit for tatting with our partners is a huge reason for those annoying disagreements. It’s a never-ending tit for tat. It’s an epidemic. It’s a way of conversing that is engrained in us.

However most tit for tatting tightens chests. Children tit for tatting is as annoying as the baby shark song on repeat. And tit for tatting with our partners? Well, that’s just our passive aggressive way of trying to guilt them in to seeing the inequality we perceive. But does tit for tatting ever help? Does tit for tatting solve any of our tit for tatting problems? Me thinks not. The more I write about this topic, I not only realise that I’ve read too many Dr Seuss books with my kids, I also realise that tit for tatting only makes us feel momentarily better when the tit for tat is in our court. Then the person being tit for tattered tit for tatters us back and then the ball is back in our court. And like a tennis game with no point the tit for tatting continues until someone has a tantrum like Serena Williams and it’s over. It’s a tit for tatter disaster. So tit for tatting doesn’t help. So how can we teach our children to tit for tatter in a way that is productive? I think we all need to think about this one more, and think about the impact tit for tatting has on our lives. It starts with realising that when we care too much about what others get that we are comparing ourselves to them. Does it matter who got more sleep, more downtime, or an extra scoop of ice-cream? Like I’ve said in a previous rant - comparison is the thief of joy. When we focus on what we give, not what we get the tit for tatting stops. Something for us all to ponder.

Sometimes it’s fun. I love finding someone who likes to tit for tat and one up you with everything you say - just to see what will come out of their mouth.

Locals Making a Difference

LOCALS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Our community is filled with amazing individuals who go above and beyond each and every day. We at PakMag are more than honoured to introduce you to three of these local legends, each from a different generation, whose unique contributions have a positive impact on our Cairns’ community.

Kelby Cifuentes – Inventor of the Toadanator At just 11 years old, Kelby is already an entrepreneur and award-winner, thanks to his innovative Toadanator – a cane toad tadpole trap that could revolutionise our tropical north backyards. Kelby lives with his mum, dad and younger sister, Isabella, 9 in Atherton. His idea for the Toadanator stemmed from his passion for catching cane toads. Which, let’s face it, is an activity many of us remember doing growing up.

10 January 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au

“We have caught toads for as long as I can remember,” Kelby tells PakMag. “People laugh, but instead of Easter egg hunts we have a cane toad hunt. I guess it's a family tradition.” Kelby is well aware of the cane toad problem and would love to see the cane toad numbers decline. He invented the Toadanator as part at the Tablelands Schools Science and Sustainability Enrichment Program. Tackling Toads One Backyard at a Time The Toadanator works to trap tadpoles and prevent them from developing into cane toads. He tested his trap out in his backyard dam and recently took home the Tropical North Queensland Innovative Awards People’s Choice Award.

Locals Making a Difference

“I never thought my idea would have turned out this well, I was really surprised to hear I was shortlisted for two awards and was mind blown when my name was called out as a winner. I still can't believe it!” Through the local and media support, Kelby is even selling Toadanators to locals who are looking to reduce the cane toad problem in their backyards. Although Kelby came up with the brilliant idea, he explains that the Toadanator is a family project. “My whole family is involved. Mum keeps on me to set the Toadanator. Dad helps me by cutting the pipe and driving me to deliver the Toadanators. Isabella was a great help with counting tadpoles when I was testing the Toadanator. My dog, Sienna wasn't much help, but she kept me company up at the dam when I was testing my trap which was nice.” “Kelby has really taken this and run with it,” proud mum, Shannon explains. “Right from the start he has been eager to get the Toadanator to work - which it does. We are extremely proud of Kelby and what he has achieved so far.” Getting Involved Alhough Kelby would love to take the Toadandator Australia wide, for now, he is focusing on helping those in Far North Queensland. To support Kelby and for more information on the Toadanator check out his Facebook page @toadanator.

Lynelle Dabelstein – Manager Ruth’s Women’s Shelter As the manager of Ruth’s Women’s Shelter in Cairns, Lynelle is very familiar with the faces of domestic violence. With every woman who walks through the door, Lynelle’s mission remains the same – to help her break the cycle and make a fresh start for herself and her children. For 32 years Lynelle has been involved in Ruth’s Women’s Shelter, a not for profit organisation that provides secure crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. Ruth’s was founded in 1977 with the foresight of four women – Ruth Thomas, Pat O’Hara, Joan Trewern and Jean Bleyerveld. Lynelle, a nurse and mum-of-three started with Ruth’s back in 1986 and since then has helped countless women escape a violent domestic situation and start again. Providing Women and Children With Help and Hope for Change For Lynelle, the reason for doing it is simple – to see the change in clients over time. Women and children that come to the shelter often remain there for four weeks to 12 weeks, even longer.

“They become part of us,” Lynelle tells PakMag. “You get to know the people really well and to see the change, well, this change is why we are there. It’s why we do what we do.” Lynelle states that the shelter sees women from all different walks of life, but, for whatever reason, their choices are limited. “A lot of women will say that it’s not just the physical violence. It’s that continued psychological violence – those put downs, the possessiveness, the jealousy, questioning all the time, the cyberbullying.” Making the decision to walk out is never an easy one but Ruth’s aims to help ensure that women and children get the support they need to start again. They provide a safe place to stay plus all the basics that families need. “Most women and children arrive at the shelter, usually with nothing at this stage.” Ruth’s Women’s Shelter is stocked with those everyday essentials – nappies, bottles, dummies, underwear. In addition to the shelter, Ruth’s also runs a secondhand boutique where families can get clothing, toys and other essentials to start again. Getting Involved Ruth’s wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the continued community support and they are always looking for donations. Along with the basic essentials – toothpaste, nappies, toiletries – the Shelter also accepts second hand clothes and toys in decent condition. “Anything you’d give to your best friend, we would like,” Lynelle explains. As well, beds, cupboards, lounges, appliances – anything to help women move out on their own – are appreciated. Ruth’s is also looking for corporate sponsorship from businesses in Cairns that can provide gift cards or passes to fun activities for the kids to do. For more information and to get involved, visit Ruth’s Women’s Shelter online or through Facebook.

Lou Piccone – Founder Piccones IGA

the supermarkets. The family also own the Hambledon Hotel and half of the Piccones Village, Pease Street in partnership with Lou.

Over the years there have been several stories written about the Piccone family and their contributions to the community. With every story told, it is the family’s strong work ethic and sense of community that consistently stands out.

Locals Supporting Locals

Lou, and his extended family, run Piccones IGA Supermarkets among other Cairns’ businesses. But it’s the decades of dedication to the community that really make Lou Piccone stand out as one of the most respected residents of Cairns. Family and Community First Before he got into the grocery industry, Lou was a respected mechanical engineer. He even wrote his thesis on the utilisation of solar energy for heating water in Brisbane and recalls suggesting to a local MP that a bill should be passed to ensure every new house built in Queensland had a solar hot water system. This was over 60 years ago and, although Lou has since switched career paths, it’s incredible to think what could have happened if he had remained in this industry. After working as a research engineer in the sugar industry, Lou left to help his family run their business – a butcher’s shop and bakery in Edmonton. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Lou took the family business to new heights, leading to the development of Piccones IGA Supermarkets. Lou, 84, credits his family and friends for helping him throughout his very inspiring journey so far. He has six children with his late wife, Elaine, and is also a grandpa to eight grandkids and two great grandchildren. His extended family all still play an active role in the family business with his sons, Peter and John managing

For Lou, the reason behind his involvement in the Cairns community is simple. He firmly believes in the value of locals supporting locals. “I love people. I love serving people. All different characters. It’s just second nature,” Lou explains. The Piccone family have spent decades supporting organisations in the Cairns community. Not only have they set up the IGA Community Chest and the Piccones Community Benefits scheme, but they have contributed to local organisations such as the Taipan Basketball Team, the Leukemia Foundation, the Lions, the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal and the Hospital Foundation. As well, they provide regular funding to local schools and sporting clubs, including St. Therese’s School and Hambledon State School. Of course, the list of accolades continues for Lou. He has been recognised for both his volunteer and business endeavours on many occasions and was awarded Cairns Citizen of the Year and is an OAM recipient. He is also Patron of the Leukaemia Foundation, Patron of the FNQ National Servicemen’s Association, Patron of the South Cairns Cutters AFL Club and many more. “I’ve been very fortunate in my life,” Lou admits. “I had a great upbringing. I married the woman I loved, I have beautiful kids and grandchildren and this town has been fantastic to me. I’m lucky to have some spare cash over the years and there is nothing better than to give some money back to the community that has always supported me. I like to see people enjoy their life and I know that I can’t save the world but at least I can help.”

Parenting

Let Them Do It Teaching Kids to Be Self-Sufficient STORY Jenna Galley When it comes to gaining independence, children will go through different stages as the days go by. Newborns and infants, for example, need us for pretty much everything. Toddlers and preschoolers tend to think they are independent (“Me do it”) but, in reality will need our guidance and assistance often. As your children enter school they become more self-governing and this self-sufficiency will continue to increase with the passing weeks and years. But how self-sufficient should your kids be? How much should they be doing themselves? And how much should they still be relying on us? This depends on so many factors including your child’s individual ability and temperament and your personal parenting style. But, no matter where your child is, developmentally speaking, or what kind of parent you are, it’s important to encourage self-sufficiency into their routine.

Why Let Them Try? Self-sufficiency is a learned skill and one that we need to nurture from a young age. Sure, we can do everything for our kids, but this isn’t good for anyone. First of all, it’s absolutely exhausting. Take it from someone who’s been her children’s personal chef/maid/chauffeur/ hairdresser/toy picker-upper for nine long years. The constant demands can start to drag you down, burn you out, and turn you into an exhausted mum zombie who survives purely on coffee and chocolate. Secondly, it’s no good for your kids either. It can lead to laziness and, worst still, a sense of entitlement. They come to expect this same treatment from everyone – teachers, peers, co-workers, and partners. Giving kids a chance to try teaches them responsibility, boosts their confidence and prepares them for the future. But, most importantly, it gives them a sense of pride that yes, they have the ability to do it themselves.

www.pakmag.com.au | January 2019 15

Parenting

Self-Sufficiency Success Your kids aren’t going to become independent overnight. But there are ways to help them learn to be a little more self-sufficient and gain a bit more responsibility without putting too much pressure on them. 1. Add to their workload (gently) The easiest way to do this is to give them ageappropriate chores. But before you dump a list of chores on their tables, teach them how to do it, even if the task seems simple to you, like making the bed or setting the table. Offering support, praise and guidance, when needed, can make them want to help out. Head to www.pakmag.com.au for some ideas on what chores are suitable for children of all ages. 2. Explain WHY they need to help Telling a child to do something doesn’t always work. Kids often need a reason WHY (“because I said so,” often isn’t good enough). But if you explain to them WHY they need to help out and take responsibility, you have a better chance of getting a good reaction. And without having to constantly nag at them. For example, try: •• Can you set the table? Because I’m busy making dinner and would love the help. •• Can you pick up your socks? Because it’s rude to leave your dirty clothes on the floor. •• Can you wipe the toilet seat? Because you’re the one who peed on it. 3. Help them find their way The path to self-sufficiency is usually riddled with bumps and opportunities for kids to give up and mums to take over. Take the fine art of learning to tie shoes. I cannot tell you how many times my daughter has tried to learn this, gotten frustrated and given up. And how many times we’ve been late for school and I’ve just done it for her. Don’t let them give up. Avoid the urge to take over. Instead, you assist them, supervise them or guide them. They may be slow, or sloppy, or make mistakes. Or they

16 January 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au

may do it differently than you. But this is all part of their journey towards independence. 4. Give them the tools to solve problems The main tool children need to solve any problem? The assurance that they have the capability to do it, to think for themselves, to brainstorm a solution and to put this solution into play. For example, your child may have lost his shoes. Rather than run around the house like a mad woman searching for them, ask him to think about where he left them last, to backtrack his steps, to use his knowledge to find them. 5. Control less, enjoy more One of the hardest things about teaching your kids to be self-sufficient is that it may feel like you’re losing control, like they no longer need you anymore. But here’s the thing: No matter how old they are, you are always their parent. And your kids will always need you. You will be the one they turn to when they need a cuddle or a confidence booster, when they need homework help or relationship advice. This won’t change, even if you’re no longer doing their laundry or making their bed for them. It simply means you’ve given them the tools they need to become confident, selfreliant individuals. When it comes to being there for emotional support, don’t take a step back. Be front and centre, always. But when it comes to picking up their dirty underwear from the floor, it’s okay to step back. Watching your kids become self-sufficient is a rewarding experience. It means you will spend less time picking up after them and more time enjoying time together. It means you can share the workload, reduce the stress and put your feet up every once in a while. But, most importantly, it means you’re giving them the confidence to tackle new challenges and the tools to grow into independent individuals. Watching their eyes light up with pride when they set the table correctly or cook their first family dinner or tie their own shoe laces is such an amazing feeling. Especially when you can enjoy the moment from the comfort of your couch.

St Therese's School

“My job is in vocational educational and careers. In year 10 our students do a work experience program – they write resumes, conduct interviews, go to work experience, then use these experiences to help them choose subjects for Year 11 and 12. I try to encourage students to think outside the box”

“I had amazing teachers that changed my life by how inspiring they were – they gave me the belief in myself that the sky’s the limit. I am now in the privileged position to help inspire children to be the best version of themselves. There are not many jobs that you can do that. It’s a responsibility and honour”.

PakMag: Why do you love being the vocational education and careers teacher? Marcelle: “I can think of a student who was disengaged with schoolwork, but ended up doing a certificate course that led into the mining industry. Since then they’ve had so many opportunities within the mines, and is being held up as an example in the job. It is such a reward to see the kids become what they set out to do.” PakMag: Where were you born? Marcelle: Zimbabwe PakMag: How long have you been teaching? Marcelle: 36 years!

PakMag: If you had one wish for students what would it be? Jacqui: I want all our students to develop a life-long belief that you can do anything you put your mind to and that we aren’t perfect at everything straight way – it’s OK and good to make mistakes, that is how we learn. PakMag: Where were you born? Jacqui: England PakMag: What’s your favourite food? Jacqui: Antipasto

PakMag: Most inspiring memory of being a teacher? Marcelle: I taught in a little remote South African school and it became dual language (African and English).

PakMag: What your favourite subject to teach? Jacqui: English, because I love working with children and helping them develop a love of reading and watching them develop as they learn.

MEGAN JACKSON St Thomas's School Megan loves teaching science and maths. Along with her colleague, Viola Heath, Megan has been running a lunch time and after school STEM and Robotics Club. Each term has a different focus. Our students choose what interests them – whether it is an Engineering and Maths focus, Technology, Arts, or Science focus. Megan tells PakMag “The enthusiasm from students is catching. For Technology we investigated how boats and catapults worked and kids designed, built and tested them. During the Arts focus we used a green screen and made videos, movies and animations. In Science we had fun conducting different experiments. I notice how well students worked together and drew on each other’s strengths.” PakMag: Why did you become a teacher? Megan: I wanted to join the Navy, to do this I had to get a university degree, and I loved teaching so much so that the Navy idea fell to the wayside. “The best thing about being a teacher is watching them in the early years - watching their social skills, grow, watching them develop friendships, provoking their imagination and inspiring them, pushing them to be creative and independent little learners. I take my role seriously, but I like to have fun with the kids and make sure they love learning. I also love teaching PE. I take the kids out for games as part of their learning; it helps with our lessons as well as building their fine and gross motor abilities.”

“I recall seeing the look on a Year 12 student’s face, when I told them I remember them singing me a particular song in Grade 6. I love the relationships that you form with the students during the course of the year and finding out what makes them tick. There are two subjects I (particularly) love to teach. Literacy, because I am a Word Nerd and I am passionate about sharing my nerdiness. Secondly, I love teaching Science. I love doing the hands-on investigations and hearing all the ‘oohs, aahs and wows.’ It’s also really something when an experiment draws out more questions than it answers.”

PakMag: What song represents your life right now? Kristen: “Shotgun – summer is certainly here, and I love relaxing in the sun!” PakMag: What were you like as a student? Kirsten: “My mum was a teacher at the primary school so I was goodie two shoes. I was always worried if I got into trouble at school that I would have double the trouble when I got home!” PakMag: What’s the best thing about being a teacher? Expert Advice

THE PAKMAG EXPERTS PROACTIVE PHYSIO

SUNBIRD ORTHODONTICS

Dear Emily,

Dear Dr Bobby,

I’ve heard there is a wrong and a right way to empty your bowels, is this true?

What is faster, Invisalign or braces?

There most certainly is! One of the biggest contributors to pelvic floor dysfunction is constipation/dysfunctional bowel evacuation. Our pelvic floor’s resting state is more like a sling that wraps around the rectum - effectively acting as a secondary continence mechanism to our main sphincters (like kinking a hose to stop the flow). This means to empty our bowels we need to ‘unkink’ the rectum to allow stool to pass through easily. The best way to do this is to make sure you are in a simulated ‘squat position’- keeping your knees above the level of your hips, wide apart and your elbows resting on your knees. This will keep the pelvic floor in its most relaxed state allowing you to empty your bowels without too much trouble. 4053 6222 www.cairnsphc.com.au

The key to moving teeth is constant gentle pressure. An Orthodontist can use literally anything to move a tooth, as long as the pressure is constant and gentle. However, the speed at which teeth move is determined by your own biology, and stronger pressure does not move teeth any faster. Therefore it doesn’t really matter if you are wearing Invisalign or traditional braces, so long as the Orthodontist is skilled enough to apply constant gentle pressures to your teeth. Of course, if you don’t wear your Invisalign aligners, the teeth will not move. So you have to do your part and make sure you wear your Invisalign as instructed by your Orthodontist. The real answer to the question is: A Specialist Orthodontist is the fastest way to straighten teeth. 4038 1036 www.sunbirdorthodontics.com.au

COLLIER LAWYERS Dear Nardine, If I had to do three things before I left my relationship what would they be? This is assuming the relationship really is over (and the relationship is not one where there is violence, drug or alcohol abuse): 1. Work out what your expenses are, what your financial position is and gather together all financial documents. 2. Try and have a civil discussion with your partner about how you will each meet the expenses until property matters can be resolved. 3. If you have children, work out what arrangements can be made for the children to see each parent and how you can best minimise the distress of separation for them. 4214 5666 www.collierlawyers.com.au

What does preventative health care involve for my dog?

Should I buy a 4WD?

We’ve all heard the saying “prevention is better than a cure” and when it comes to your pet’s healthcare this statement is definitely true. Regular preventative health care and an annual visit to the vet may seem expensive and time consuming but compared to the cost of treating tick paralysis or parvo virus, for example, preventative veterinary health care is the way forward.

When choosing the right 4WD for your family you need to start by thinking about why you want a 4WD in the first place.

To find out what to expect during your pet’s annual checkup please see my full reply at www.pakmag.com.au

What is your life like? Do you need to tow a boat or caravan, are you a family that want to go off road camping, or do you just love a larger car to feel safe on our NQ roads? How do you want to feel in the car? Are safety features important to you? Do you want the latest technology, or are you after comfort and features like 7 seats to fit all the kids and their friends in if need be? What about price, warranty and payment options? My advice is to think about the percentage of the time you will use this car for each activity and choose one that brings you the most comfort, safety and doesn’t’ break the bank. We have a really exciting new brand in Cairns now called HAVAL, do yourself a favour and come and check it out. Unlimited kilometre 7-year warranty, loads of safety features, luxury feel inside and costs $20,000 less than other comparable 4WDs. Drop in and say hi, my team and I would love to meet you.

The reason annual checks are so important is that our pets age much more rapidly than people, so major health changes can occur in a short amount of time. The risks of cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and other serious conditions all increase with age. Regular wellness examinations allow our veterinarians to evaluate your pet’s general health and diagnose, treat or prevent any health problems before they become serious.

TALK TIME SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY Dear Teagan, My six-year-old doesn’t seem to understand my or his kindy teacher’s instruction. Could this be a problem that a speech pathologist could help with? Absolutely, we work with many children who struggle to follow instructions. There are several parts involved with instructions; the child needs to understand all the words that are used, sequence them correctly, plan how to follow through, and remember all the information. Children can have difficulties in any or all of these areas. Speech pathologists are able to complete assessments to get an in depth understanding of why following instructions is difficult, and work with the child and family to develop skills that are lacking. We can also provide strategies on how communication partners or the environment can be modified to make following instructions easier for your child. If you have concerns about your child’s ability to understand or remember instructions, give us a call to see how we can help. 4045 4615 www.talktimeslp.com

Born to be wild Remember when you were young and spent your days outdoors, playing in the sandpit, digging in the garden, feeding farm animals and splashing around in a make-shift water park? While those activities aren’t daily occurrences for many children today, they are at the Smithfield Village Early Learning Centre. The innovative and one-of-a-kind Cairns’ early learning centre is designed to give young children the opportunity to experience and learn from the great outdoors while, at the same time, grow in an innovative environment led by passionate, caring educators. Opened in 2014 by John Wall, who has built over 400 childcare centres in Australia, the centre has become a huge hit with parents and children. So much so, that all 126 placements are full, and the waiting list keeps growing. “I believe kids want their ‘wildhoods’ back,” John said. “They want to play for real and want to get dirty. They haven’t learned how to entertain themselves, but are so used to being entertained, whether it’s on screen or in a program. Their imagination suffers, and they miss out on one of the simple joys of life – just regular play.” The centre’s outdoor environment is unique to Cairns in many ways. It has four sand pits, two large bike tracks, a waterpark, a large grassy area for children to run around in, a Barnyard, which is home to goats, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs, reptiles and a wide range of bird species. There’s even a Garden World where children learn how to plant, tend to, and eat a variety of herbs and vegetables.

It’s about your child being excited to go to day care.

“Our head chef has also implemented a Mini Master Chef Program every day,” centre director Kim Dunbar said. “He teaches children about the ingredients in food and shows them that good food doesn’t come out of packages.” The centre’s indoor learning areas are equipped with state-of-the-art resources for all development stages of children and includes furniture such as tables, chairs and book shelves made from natural materials, not plastic. Having 20 years’ experience in the industry has given John the insight to understand what children, mums and dads want in a childcare centre. “It’s about the child being excited to go to day care,” he said. “The centres we are building and developing are unique, managing and understanding a balance between education, care, play and ‘wildhood’. This is the type of environment I would wish all children to be part of.”

The children also delight in meals that are cooked daily by five-star culinary chefs who provide a mixture of gourmet and home-style cooking.

HEALTH IF THE SHOE FITS 1400 hours – this is the average length of time children spend wearing their school shoes every year. That’s a crazy amount of time when you think about it. From walking around the classroom to climbing the monkey bars, from playing tiggy on the playground to skipping during sport, children are constantly on their feet. So how can you ensure your child’s school shoes will go the distance? When shopping, take your children with you! Yes, they will probably complain and you might need to bribe them with donuts after, but it’s so important they actually try the shoes on and walk around in them. Have a professional check that the shoes are the right fit. Often kids will say, “They are fine,” simply because they want to go home (or get a donut) when really they aren’t quite right. Get a second opinion in the shops to check. Plan to Upgrade Mid-Year Many parents go up a size when choosing school shoes. But the extra room can cause callouses, blisters and damaged toenails. Instead, it’s preferable to budget to purchase another pair half way through the year and check at the end of each term to make sure the shoes still fit.

Design a good life Mario Calanna is receiving rave reviews for his new book, Design a Good Life. “This book is a must read to learn of love, family, good health and the power of belief.” “If you want to be inspired to do more than you think possible, just start reading this book.” Go to www.calannapharmacy.com.au to buy your copy today.

Resolutions You'll Keep Looking for some good resolutions? Ones that don’t cost the earth, won’t take up all your time and can be achieved? Here’s five to choose from. 1. Be more present - Put away the phone, the computer, the distraction and enjoy the moment with your family. 2. Stop with the comparisons - Sure, the mum from next door runs every morning, bakes delicious banana bread AND always smells like roses. But, hey, you’re awesome too. In your own way. So stop comparing yourself to others and focus on your strengths. 3. Ditch the mum guilt - There’s no room for guilt in 2019. So stop feeling like you ‘should’ do better and be proud of what you ARE doing. 4. Yell less, time out more - Feel the anger rising? Take a time out. Put yourself in a corner for three minutes. Take deep breaths and return when you feel more in control. 5. Do less for your kids - Make 2019 the year your kids finally learn how to pick up their stuff, make their beds, or at least put their toys away. Make it part of their routine and reduce the amount of hours spent bending down picking up LEGO.

HEALTH Breaking Bad... Habits We all have them. And they can be a nightmare to break. It can be even trickier to convince your kids to break them. But, as parents, this is part of our unspoken job description. So whether it’s your toddler biting, your preschooler hitting, your school-aged child swearing or your tween/ teen lying, here’s how you can get them to break the bad habit. Lead by example Before you try to tackle a bad habit, make sure you’re not guilty of doing the same thing. It’s hard to break your child’s swearing habit when you’re constantly dropping the F-bomb at the dinner table (guilty). Find a substitute Whenever the frustration, the stress or the fear that is causing the bad habit hits, work with your child to find an alternative way to handle it. Taking deep breaths, cuddling a teddy, or using a different (not sweary) word are substitutes that might help. Be persistent (and patient) Offer plenty of support and encouragement. Even great kids develop bad habits and this shouldn’t be something they feel shamed or stressed about. Add little rewards to remind them that they are going great and you are proud of them.

Help your child with back to school anxiety STORY Kys Want, Talk n Tap Therapy Listen, empathise, identify, reassure - What is the actual worry/fear? Be empathetic (I understand...), identify (I remember feeling … too), reassure (I will help you). Positive talk - Tell your child how great and strong they are. Remind them of other times they felt nervous or anxious and how they got through it. Be positive yourself, do not show you are worried or anxious about them. Show them you totally believe in them and their ability to go to school and enjoy themselves. Plan together - Involve your child in planning the routine, lunches to pack and things to do after school. Help them pack their bag and get clothes ready for the morning. Practise runs to school - Wake up early, breakfast, dress and drive to school. Go with a friend - If your child has a friend going to the same school, try and go together for the first couple of weeks. Follow a routine - Same meal times, bed times, wake up times and leave times. Tools – Take deep breaths. Picture something funny like a funny movie. Smile big – it tricks the brain and changes the way you feel. Learn tapping - it instantly calms and relieves negative emotions.

Many hats!

You’re having a baby and are planning to return to work. So, you are probably aware you will need a game plan.

Buy an electric breast pump (I have a Medela Swing pump): they are expensive but worth their weight in gold if you need to store breastmilk.

Here you will find some tips from me: a midwife, manager, frequent flyer, wife and first-time mother who is returning to work. I hope this will assist you to return to work with confidence.

I recommend reading Breastfeeding: woman and work (Australian Breastfeeding Association) www.breastfeeding.asn.au

Planning If you’re like me, being strategic and planning is key to success. Some of the things you can plan for include: Early Parenting Centre (EPC) 4052 8077 or 4052 5232 If you’re having your baby at Cairns Private Hospital or any Ramsay Maternity Hospital book in early for the EPC. I recommend booking in for when bub is 6-8 weeks old - I booked when I was 32 weeks pregnant. My husband booked leave from work and we both planned to attend so we could learn prior to me heading back to work. During your time there you’ll get support and learn some tips for achieving a good sleep settling routine for your baby! Being a midwife I know how important this support is. Breastfeeding at work Every workplace should allow you to breastfeed and express breastmilk for your baby. While you’re pregnant, plan where you will do this, where you will store your baby’s milk, will someone be able to bring your baby to you at work for a feed? If not, then it will be essential to have breastmilk stored to feed baby while you’re at work.

Have a chat with your partner/family and plan ahead Maternity Leave How long will you have on maternity leave? I’m having eight weeks, then my husband is becoming a stay at home dad for six months. Complete your parenting leave forms and find out how many weeks your work will pay for maternity leave. These forms usually need to be completed 10 weeks prior to parenting leave commencing. Centrelink Payments I recommend, at least 10 weeks before baby is due, that you walk into Centrelink with your partner and speak to someone to discuss your eligibility and the most optimal way to utilise any payments you may receive. For example Family Tax Benefit Part A & Part B are family payments for parents of dependent children. Communicate with your work place Let them know if anything changes before you are due to return to work. Enjoy the Journey! If you have any questions, call our Maternity Unit!

Bump, Bub and Beyond

Settling Secrets STORY Jenna Galley Babies love cuddles. Especially when trying to settle to sleep. If you gave an infant the choice between settling in your arms or settling in a cot, the majority of babies are going to go with the former. The problem is, we parents need a break from being non-stop settling machines. We need to sleep. And eat. Shower, even. And thus, we are given the seemingly impossible task of teaching our little ones to self-settle.

Letting Baby Cry (The Ferber Method) Developed by Dr Richard Ferber, the Cry-It-Out method is the most drastic approach to helping baby settle and is not recommended for babies under four months of age. It is also quite effective, if you can handle the temporary tears. 1. Put baby in the cot, awake but sleepy. 2. Say goodnight and leave the room.

There is no secret settling formula that will work for all babies. But there are some techniques that experts swear by and have been kind enough to pass on to us sleep-deprived parents.

3. If baby cries, wait a short period of time and re-enter the room. Do not pick baby up. Just offer comforting pats and noises.

Settle with the 5 S’s (The Karp Method)

5. Continue to return to the crying baby, but leave it a little longer before re-entering the room. Repeat the process until baby falls asleep.

Dr Harvey Karp developed a five-pronged approach to getting babies to settle. This is especially handy for extra fussy babies who simply won’t sleep without a sleep aid. This is the gentlest approach to helping baby settle. 1. Swaddle – Wrap baby to prevent the startle reflux and promote security. 2. Side – Start baby off on his side to ease fussiness before transitioning your infant to the back position for sleep. 3. Shush – The ‘shush’ sound of white noise can lull baby into sleep. 4. Swing – Babies love that back and forth movement, another soothing way to settle. 5. Suck – Allow baby to suck, either on the breast or a dummy. Yes, this can lead to a dummy (or booby) dependency, but, at least it gives your arms a break!

4. Leave again, even if baby is still awake and upset.

No-Cry Sleep Solution (The Pantley Method) Sleep expert Elizabeth Pantley designed another option – a middle ground. This approach is also effective for older babies and toddlers, especially those with a dummy/booby dependency. 1. Allow baby to settle in your arms, on the breast or with a dummy. 2. Before baby falls completely asleep, remove the sleep aid and place the sleepy infant in the cot. 3. If baby wakes up, repeat the process until baby is almost asleep again and place baby back in cot. 4. Repeat until baby stays asleep in the cot. Which method is right for you? We can’t answer that. But hopefully one of these settling tricks will work for you and your baby.

Tips for Time Zone Travel

Breastfeeding in the Heat

Heading on an adventure with the teeny traveller? Worried about how the difference in time will impact bub’s sleep patterns and mood? It’s a common concern for all parents and rightfully so, especially if you’ve just sorted out a great routine that’s working for your tot.

It’s getting hot in here…especially when you’ve got a hungry bubba sticking to your boobs.

Below are a few things to bring on board when getting baby used to a different time zone:

Blasting the air conditioning is one way to cool down when breastfeeding but air con isn’t always available, especially if you’re outside, away from home or simply want to cut back on your electricity costs.

1. Start before you go

So what can you do to avoid sweaty, sticky baby-tobreast syndrome? Try:

You may want to get bub into the habit of going to bed an hour earlier or later (depending on where you’re travelling) to help adapt to the change.

A wet towel: Keep a cool, clean cloth nearby to dab on your skin and on baby’s back to keep the sweat away.

2. Plan a day of relaxation on arrival

Nothing but a nappy: Strip bub down to just a nappy and possibly a singlet to keep that little body cool. If you prefer to swaddle before a feed, then opt for a lightweight muslin wrap.

Give yourself (and your tot) a day to rest before hitting the scheduled activities. Plan a hotel or a pool day, for example. This will allow him to sleep when he needs and hopefully get used to the new environment without feeling too overwhelmed. 3. Aim to keep the same sleep schedule as home If baby has three day sleeps, try to keep this the same, even though the actual time slots will differ. 4. Change your meal times straight away Although changing baby’s bedtime won’t happen overnight, changing meal times can. Once you’ve arrived, get on the destination’s regular eating times. 5. Embrace the new temporary routine Try not to stress too much about the time. Instead, look for the positives. Sure, bub may be bright eyed and bushy tailed at 4am, but, hey, at least you get to watch the sunrise in a new location. You’re on holidays – the lack of routine is all part of the fun!

Plenty of water: Breastfeeding mummas need to up their daily intake of water and this is especially the case when feeding a summer baby. Stay hydrated by always having a water bottle handy. Water-fuelled snacks: In addition to being extra thirsty, you might find that you are also hungrier when feeding in the heat. Stock the fridge with water-content fruit and veg like watermelon, strawberries, rockmelon, cucumber and green capsicum. The football hold: Letting baby feed in the football hold position (baby’s feet are pointing toward your back and he is lying along your side) which means less skin-toskin contact. Shorter, but more frequent feeds: This will keep the skin-to-skin sweat down and also ensure baby is getting more frequent hydration hits throughout the day.

STUDY NOOKS With The Block’s Caro and Kingi A fresh school year is upon us, which means shopping for new stationery, textbooks and backpacks. With all this schoolwork, comes homework. It's been proved that studying or working in a quiet, comfortable area improves focus. We've compiled some ideas to help you create the perfect work-fromhome or study nook.

area really helps you to be a more productive with your studies. Add some drawers and shelves to keep studying materials and textbooks in check.

Get into the zone

Sometimes it’s hard to make studying fun, but you can always make it comfortable! Opt for a comfy desk chair and pillows with simple yet cute designs, or take it a step up and build a reading corner lined with pillows, blankets, and of course, all the materials required to study. Just don’t get too comfy or you may fall asleep!

Creating a silent, well-lit space is essential to get those study juices flowing. Decorate the space with light colours and paintings and plants to create a positive learning zone. If you want to take it a step up, invest in a diffuser to fill the room with pleasant scents. Stay organised A tidy space equals a tidy mind - it may surprise you how clean and organised surroundings can positively affect your ability to focus. Having an organised desk

A calendar or notice board can be great to keep you on track and motivated. Get comfy

A new year of school will also bring a new flood of classes, study materials, and of course, homework. Keep your children (or yourself) inspired and organised by providing a functional and welcoming place to achieve all those homework goals.

BUSINESS NEWS INTIMO FIT FOR A QUEEN

Massage, Reflexology MASSAGE, REFLEXOLOGY AND REIKI and

I love helping women feel gorgeous and comfortable with professionally fitted bras. Over the seven years I have been running my business, lots of my regular clients shared the challenge of finding their daughter’s first bra. ‘Where do you go to get fitted?’ Their daughters refused to go to a big shopping centre – ‘how embarrassing!’

Looking after your family is one of life’s greatest joys, but I know how easy it is to put yourself second… I also know that when you are not feeling your best, you cannot be your best self.

Mum and daughter’s first bra fittings are now one of my most popular appointments in my boutique at home. That first bra fitting experience should be fun and relaxing. Invite your daughters’ bestie and her mum and I will visit you in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Ssshh, Mum’s the Word.

Healthy Me: Massage Reflexology Reiki is a mobile business so busy mums don’t have to leave their homes to get restorative treatments. I work weekends and evenings to accommodate those who can only fit in treatments after work, or after they’ve put bub to bed. I keep my prices low to encourage my clients to book regular treatments as this has the greatest benefit to their health. I am passionate about what I do because I know that when you feel fantastic, you can be that fantastic person that you are meant to be.

Advanced learning is what the (future) doctor ordered

Studying advanced content has placed 14 year old Jesleen Patel on a steady path to becoming a medical scientist.

Jesleen says Kumon will help her pursue her dreams because it has helped her develop essential attributes for study success.

Jesleen, who is starting Year 10 this year, has been studying with Kumon in Cairns since 2010. Kumon is an individualised maths and English programme that build students’ abilities step-by-step, at their own pace.

“Kumon has given me good study habits and the ability to complete work as efficiently and accurately as possible”, Jesleen says

This means those who missed essential concepts in class can go back and catch-up, and those who are capable are free to tackle the advanced content they are comfortable with. In Kumon, Jesleen is tackling maths that Year 12 students study. “Kumon has allowed me to understand key concepts before my peers do”, Jesleen says. “Additionally, it has equipped me with the skills required to problem solve and increase my knowledge in areas I am interested in through self-learning”.

I believe this will allow me to handle the increase in workload when I reach higher education while remaining in a positive headspace.

Meanwhile, Twinkle Patel, Jesleen’s mother, says Kumon builds very strong skills in children. “Kumon has assisted Jesleen to develop other skills such as concentration and attention to detail”, Twinkle says. “Jesleen has also become an independent learner who studies each day after school for an extra half an hour”.

Extra-Curricular

The Importance of Extra-Curricular Activities STORY Jenna Galley Most of us know the strain of those extra busy days. You know, the ones where it’s go, go, go from sun up to sun down. Where one child has gymnastics practise and soccer photos while the other child has swim squad and music lessons. Where you are driving from one venue to another, the kids are changing outfits in the car park and you’ve accepted the fact that takeaway for dinner is inevitable.

There has been extensive research on the topic of extra-curricular activities and kids and the general consensus among the parenting experts is that they are a good thing (as long as you are not overdoing it). How Extra-Curricular Activities Benefit Kids

Yes, those days are crazy hectic. And you probably collapse into bed at the end of it all and wonder WHY you agreed to let them take on so many after-school activities.

•• Give kids a sense of purpose, passion and pride Having something to do after school can give your child a goal to work towards, especially if there are weekly games or end of term recitals to look forward to.

Although it can be exhausting at times, allowing your little ones the opportunity to do something other than school is so important. This doesn’t mean you have to agree to ALL the activities and wear everyone out. But choosing one (okay, or two) can benefit your entire tribe.

•• Teach kids teamwork and dedication - We all have those days where we really “don’t want to”. But being part of a team, organisation or group gives your child a sense of commitment and what it means to be a teammate or a member of something.

www.pakmag.com.au | January 2019 65

Extra-Curricular

•• Build confidence and self-esteem - Not every child is going to be good at school and not every child is going to love going. Letting your child do an afterschool activity that he actually enjoys proves to him that he is talented, even if he doesn’t excel in the school environment. This boost in confidence will hopefully translate to other areas in your child’s life. •• Provide a new circle of friends - Ones that share the same passion. •• Teach time management - Yes, we parents become the multi-tasking masters by organising various extra-curricular activities. But kids also learn about finding this balance.

excel at a certain subject or sport, this can lead to scholarships, grants, etc. down the road. You never know - one of those extra-curricular hobbies your child does now might lead to his career path later on. What About Us Parents? Don’t get me wrong. Some days I would love nothing more than to come home after school, take off my pants and chill out. But chauffeuring the kids here, there and everywhere keeps us parents busy too. It introduces us to new people in the community with children who share the same interests and it gives us a chance to socialise, even if it’s from the sidelines.

•• Help them learn responsibility - Another important skill for kids to have! Extra-curricular activities often come with extra stuff - instruments, equipment, uniforms. All of which your child will need to be responsible for.

But the biggest benefit has to be the pride that comes from seeing our children do something they love to do. Watching our kids perform, whether on a soccer pitch, on stage, in the pool or anywhere else, is one of the greatest feelings on earth.

•• Open doors for the future - We all want our children to succeed but most parents don’t want to push their kids into doing too much now just to prepare for their future. However, you may find that if your child does

These moments fill their walls with certificates, ribbons and medals, but they do so much more than that for us parents. They fill our hearts with pride, our eyes with tears and our minds with happy memories.

Questions for Parents to Consider How Do You Choose? Not sure what your child would like to do? It’s hard to narrow it down, especially if your child shows an interest in all sorts of things. Look into free trial and open days and ask around to see what other parents recommend. Check out www.pakmag.com.au for additional tips on helping kids find their passion and choosing the right extra-curricular activity. How Much is Too Much? Taking on too much after school can be a huge burden for the entire family. •• Financial pressure - Extra-curricular activities can be quite costly and you might be feeling the burn in your bank account. •• Impact on the kids - Too much can leave the kids completely burnt out, impact their sleep and school and keep them too busy. All children need a chance to play, to chill and to just be kids. •• Impact on the family - Just like kids need play time, families need family time and sometimes the desire to do ALL THE THINGS can impact this downtime. One activity per child might be enough for your family. Or you may be happy to let the kids choose two or more activities each. A general rule of thumb is to have at least one day a week where there is nothing on so the kids (and you) can come home, focus on their homework and play without having to dash off to practise.

Don’t Forget About You Too! We adults need a bit of a break from the constant parenting too. Some outside stimulation of our own! Head over to page 61 to check out our Get Out Get Active! feature for some great ideas on getting out, getting social and getting a bit of me-time back into your routine.
