The Thing Is
The Thing Is... STORY Bree James
I remember being at a business luncheon, running to the toilet as they put my meal down as I felt really unwell. I have no idea what the speaker spoke about from that moment on. My brain was running through everything I had eaten the past 48 hours trying to work out why I felt so sick. But this felt a little different, everything smelled disgusting, and I was getting waves of hot flushes then waves of nausea. Then it hit me. OMG, maybe I am pregnant. I was out of that lunch so fast, stopped at Woolies, grabbed a test and headed back to the office to force out a pee. The stick instantly showed a positive, I smiled and laughed, then panicked and cried as my current life flashed before me. I was going to have a baby. The thing is, even if you are trying to have a baby, no one can prepare a mother to be for this moment. In fact, nothing can really prepare you for parenthood full stop. With two boys, now aged 6 and 9, I never expected the things that I was going to learn. The gross things I would learn. The things I wish I really didn’t learn. 1. That babies can poop really far with a nappy off. Like, metres. My first month home with baby in the middle of the night, I recall dodging just in time to miss my face, poop that hit my shoulder and the clean washing behind me. 2. That baby boys get erections from birth. Like, all the time. As a mother, it is very disturbing and difficult to change a nappy forcing a little stiffy to point anywhere but up so the pee doesn’t fly out the top of the nappy next time.
3. That boys will stick their doodles from a very young age into pretty much anything. Even the arch of a book spine to see if it fits whilst reading. 4. That they never grow out of sticking weird stuff in their mouth and licking stuff that makes you dry reach. 5. That personal space is gone, probably forever. Kids have a special radar that goes off when you pull your pants down, sit down to eat or rest, pick up the phone, or hop in the shower. 6. That little people can excrete smells that make you think something has died inside them. It seems to occur only when you are in public, especially small shops and elevators to have the most impact, and when people can’t tell if it’s you or your kids. 7. That children have no filter. They will say anything that comes to their mind. Like “Mummy, look at that OOLLLLDDD MANNNN, is he going to die?!” Really loud. Kids (especially boys), in a nutshell, really are gross. Our job is to try and get them to be not so gross as they grow into adults… But I think most women who have a man in their lives will agree, that unfortunately some of these traits are life long skills. Us women would never excrete a smell in public, we save that for the confines of our home and it always smells like roses anyway.

Stepping into history – Queen’s Baton Relay STORY Kate Moloney The Queen’s Baton Relay is a Commonwealth Games tradition, and we are fortunate to have the Queen’s Baton passing through Cairns from Thursday, 15 to Saturday, 17 March on its way to its final destination of the Gold Coast for the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the 4 April. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a celebration of our Commonwealth’s diversity and inspires community pride. Batonbearers represent the spirit of the Commonwealth and have been selected to be a part of history, a great honour indeed and we congratulate all our ‘local legend’ Batonbearers on their selection. We were lucky enough to chat with three Cairns ‘local legends’ who have the honour of taking some of many million steps that it will take to deliver the Queen’s Baton to its final destination.
TAYLA GUNTON A Cairns local since the age of two, Tayla who adorns this month’s front cover with her beautiful family, is a State Champion in cross country running. Fourteen-year-old Tayla’s dedication and commitment to her training and her outstanding achievements in cross country running are why she has been nominated her for this very special role. Tayla was nominated by a few different people in her community which says a lot in itself. Her nominees included her old school and a mother from Pace Project, the running group that she trains with. Tayla would

like to take this opportunity to thank these people for nominating her which has given her this amazing opportunity. Tayla feels truly honoured to be running with the baton along the Cairns Esplanade as her leg of the Commonwealth Games Baton Relay. Make sure you get down to the esplanade and cheer her on as this is an honour that has been earnt through lots of hard work and is one that it is very deserving. We asked Tayla for one piece of inspirational advice that she would like to share with other kids of Cairns and this is what she said: "It always seems impossible until it's done. Meaning never give up on your dreams even when it seems hard.”

BRENDAN PEETERS Although Brendan grew up in Malanda, this successful track and field athlete who has represented Australia on three occasions for the Decathlon, now considers Cairns home.
PORTIA EDEN Gordonvale local, 11-year-old Portia is a BMX superstar who would love to see more girls getting involved in this sport. Portia was nominated for the Queen’s Baton Relay due to her amazing BMX sporting achievements which include having achieved podium finishes at five BMX World Titles. Her nomination is not only as a result of this wonderful success though, she is also great role model for other girls, proving with dedication that anything is possible for young girls in sport.
Brendan is a healthy lifestyle leader and a true agent of change after having taken part in 2014 in the Indigenous Marathon Project, founded by Rob De Castella. Since this, Brendan has completed two full Ironman events (3.8k swim, 180km bike, 42.2km run) and three half-iron distance triathlons or Ironman 70.3 races, with his last race qualifying him for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. He also pours his heart and soul into coaching and developing track and field athletes. Brendan and his wife, Brooke, have developed ASPIRE Cairns, where their vision is to not only develop athletes but also to instil values which will lead to them living positive and healthy lifestyles.
It was Portia’s proud grandparents who nominated her. Portia said that her grandparents are her biggest supporters, and she is thankful for their surprise nomination as it has given her this wonderful opportunity. “Nanna and Pop, endless cups of love-filled ‘thank you tea’ are coming your way”, Portia says!
It was Brooke, Brendan’s wife who nominated him and it is clear to see here that this is a relationship built on love, respect and shared values and passions. Brendan expressed that he couldn’t do what he does without his wife and he’s grateful is to have her by his side every step of the way.
Portia will carry the baton from the intersection of Pease and Anderson Streets for her leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay. She is so excited and cannot wait to highfive everyone as she runs along and says she is running for all the kids out there with disabilities and for all the kids who work hard at the sport they love. What an amazing attitude Portia has, so make sure you get down to Anderson Street to get a high-five in.
Brendan will be running from in front of the West Cairns Bowling Club along Gatton Street in Westcourt for his leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay. Make sure you get down and support Brendan and show him the appreciation he deserves for his achievements and for his continued efforts in helping to develop local kids on and off the track.
We asked Portia for one piece of inspirational advice that she would like to share with other kids of Cairns and this is what she said: "People may think sport is all about winning, but I would love to spread the word that just competing in something and enjoying what you do, is the most important thing of all. Be a good sport first, and you will find you enjoy the wins even more."
We asked Brendan for his piece of inspirational advice that he would like to share with the kids of Cairns and this is what he said: “I remember being told when I was quite young, “It’s not what happens in life, but how you react to it" and I still refer back to this on a daily basis. Whatever challenges life throws at you, you cannot control them, but you can control how you react to it and your emotions. Stay positive, keep it social and above all else have fun!”
If you want to follow the Queen’s Baton Relay on its journey to the Gold Coast or want to discover who is carrying the Baton and when then go to www.gc2018.com/qbr.

Food, Exercise, Lifestyle: 3 Steps to a Healthier You! STORY Rose Foster So, hands up, who has forgotten their New Year’s resolution to live a healthier life already? Well, by March approximately 80 per cent of resolutions have been forgotten, so it’s no surprise that many of you reading this would have raised your hand! Well, PakMag to the rescue! We have some great ways that you can stay fit and healthy in Cairns, and we’ve done the hard work, so you have no excuse! Eating Well A huge part of the battle is what you put in your mouth. We implore you all, go and visit Source Bulk Food now! With a range of healthy goodies, making a trip to this whole foods store part of your weekly shop is a great idea. Located on Lake Street, it is easily accessible and what’s more, you can buy as much or as little as you need which means you don’t waste a thing. And speaking of waste, make sure you bring in your own jars to store what you buy. Fresh is best, so once you’ve been to Source Bulk Foods, why not head to Rusty’s? It’s open Friday, Saturday and Sunday so you’ve got plenty of time to visit the stalls and pick up all of your veggies for the week. You could even turn this into a family event, taste test different fruits and get excited planning your recipes together.
Make sure you don’t have naughty temptations in your home. We’re firm believers in ‘everything in moderation’ but if you remove sugary, salty and fatty snacks from your home, you’re less likely to pig out on them! It’s good for the kids not to have these foods so easily accessible too as it not only makes for a healthier body but it also teaches them life long healthy habits. Physical Exercise Yes, unfortunately there’s no magic formula for keeping fit and healthy, exercise is an important element that none of us should ignore. But, lucky for us, Cairns is chocked full of different sporting activities, meaning there’s something for everyone. Picking something you like is the key to making sure you don’t quit. Think about it, if you take up running and it’s something you loathe, how long do you think you’ll survive on will power alone? The Gym For some of us, we need to work out alone. We need to get to the gym, do our thing, on our own and go home! For sole exercisers, the right gym can make or break us, so picking one that is suited to your needs is essential. Sportsworld is the perfect choice for parents. Not only does it have fantastic facilities including pool, spa and

sauna, but their family memberships and child minding mean that there’s no excuse to not go to this family friendly gym. There are a range of classes, a ladies only gym, cardio section, free weights room, resistance equipment and stretching zone, so there really is something for everyone! Why not check out Tobruk Pool’s amazing new Functional Fitness Zone? Cairns newest and most unique work out zone is open now! Offering the latest equipment and most exciting group fitness classes (HIIT, strength classes, conditioning and mobility training) membership includes use for Tobruk’s aquatic facilities including the warm therapy pool. Check out www.tobrukmemorialpool.com.au for more details. The Class Attending a class is a great way to be guided through exercise without having to think about it yourself. Whatever your preference, there will be a class for you. At gyms like Sportsworld, you can attend high intensity classes like Les Mills Pump or low-impact classes like yoga, which is great because you have the diversity of doing different classes whenever you feel like it. There’s also the option to book into classes of your preferred exercise, without joining up to the gym. Studio Edge Pilates in Edge Hill and Studio Pilates in Cairns CBD offer Pilates classes from their dedicated studios. Plus, there are a number of boot camps, functional training and other exercise-specific classes all over Cairns to choose from. The Team As parents, team sports are usually something that we’re well versed in, especially when we’re sweltering on the sidelines as our little ones get involved in Saturday sports! But it’s important to remember that there are so many team sports that adults can get involved in too. Cairns Indoor Sports runs year-round tournaments for netball, cricket, volleyball and dodgeball and is a great way for mums and dads to return to sport. One of the great things about these tournaments is that if you don’t have a full team, Cairns Indoor Sports will find you one, so you end up meeting new people too – double whammy! Check out www.cairnsindoorsports.com.au to find out more or to nominate. There are plenty of other team sports such as competitive netball, AFL, Rugby and more that you can
get involved in. Check with your local club for sign on days and information. The Outdoors Cairns is lucky to have some of the best outdoor exercise spaces in Far North Queensland. Head to the Cairns Botanic Gardens and race up (or stroll!) one of the arrow tracks, not only will you get your blood pumping, but you’ll get out amongst nature and experience some lovely views at the top. Or you could get down to the esplanade to use the gym equipment, new basketball court or volleyball courts. Try something different on the weekend and take a trip to a waterfall. Josephine Falls and Crystal Cascades are great options for short walks, or if you’re up for a challenge, the 45-minute walk up to Bahana Gorge is well worth the swim at the top! Lifestyle As well as eating well and exercising there are a number of things that you can implement into your lifestyle for it to be considered a healthy one. Here’s some things we suggest to make a healthier, happier you: •• Get 8 hours. The importance of sleep is often underrated but the effects of sleep deprivation on your overall health can be immense. •• Laugh. The physical act of laughing can relieve tension and stress, it also boosts your immune system! •• Love. Whether you have a significant other or not, loving the people in your life is important to your overall happiness. And your mental state has a substantial impact on your health. •• Meditate. Our busy lives are stressful. Meditating not only helps us relax mentally, it can also have physical benefits. Research shows that meditation is good for the heart, can counteract IBS and gets insomnia under control. •• Digital Detox. The positive physical and mental implications of using your device less are numerous. Neck issues from constantly looking down, restless sleep and anxiety can be reduced the less you are attached to your phone. So, forget the New Year’s resolutions, they’re made to be broken! Instead, take steps for a healthier lifestyle so when 31 December creeps around, you won’t need to make dramatic, but short lived, promises to improve your health.
Obesity If you’re living a healthy lifestyle (or trying to) but you’re having trouble shifting the weight, there are other options out there. Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), offered by Cairns Gastro is the first of a new wave of non-surgical endoscopic procedures that can help patients lose around 20% of their Total Body Weight. Go to www.cairnsgastro.com.au for more information.

St Teresa’s SCHOOL, Ravenshoe
We’ve had a successful start to the new school year at St Rita’s! Our Term 4 Pre-Prep program once again assisted our Prep students with settling quickly and happily into their Prep/Year 1 classroom. We welcomed cheerful and well-rested staff members to Term 1, with the school community extending a special welcome to new classroom teacher, Mrs Mollie Harbour, who will be teaching our senior class.

In our Catholic school tradition, the highlight of the year’s beginning was our Commencement Mass, held on February 1 in St Rita’s Church. We thank Father Nathan McKay for presiding in Father Kerry’s absence. After Mass, Student Leaders’ badges were blessed and presented to our 2018 School and Sports Captains! Congratulations to our School Captains, Georgina Stone and Jamie Brose, and our Sports Captains, Hallie Lansdown, Max Schep and Harrison Stone.
Our lunch time programmes include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), Chess and Brainiac clubs and choir.

We have had a wonderful start to the 2018 school year with 101 smiling students getting straight into making this a great year of learning. This year we also welcomed two new teachers, Katherine Porche and Sigita Ulanas to our team, and we already feel they have become excellent additions to the St Teresa’s family.
The instrumental music programme commenced in Week 3 with Fran Vaux Labut, our instrumental music teacher, offering piano, guitar and violin tuition. Sigita Ulanas is also involved, offering flute and saxophone lessons.
St Thomas’ SCHOOL, Mareeba Rita Petersen The beginning of the school year was certainly a hive of activity, excitement and learning for our students; the learning year is well underway. Not only have our students been kept engaged in their learning, but our events calendar has been humming. Since the start of term, our school community has been involved in our Opening School Mass, Meet the Teacher Evening, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, P&F AGM, school photos and a visit from the Queens Baton Relay. Our students have also been involved in lunch time and after school STEM Club, chess classes, school band rehearsals, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and choir sessions. Now, as we have entered into the second half of this term, we look forward to both our swimming carnival and cross country event which will take place on Thursday, 22nd and Thursday, 29th March respectively. Both these events provide opportunities for our school community to gather and celebrate both achievement and perseverance. Schools are definitely busy and energetic places. secretary.mareeba@cns.catholic.edu.au www.stthomasmareeba.qld.edu.au

At the beginning of the school term, we were delighted to welcome 12 new students in Years 1 to Year 6 and 31 Prep children to our School Community. I’m pleased to report that these new students, some of whom have moved from interstate and even Canada, have all settled well into their classes and are forming new friendships.
Passing our Year 1 music class the other day, I was stopped in my tracks. Our fantastic teacher, Mrs Vero, was teaching rhythm and syncopation using the children’s story of ‘The Little Engine That Could’. Do you remember it? It had a big mountain to climb, so it used positive self-talk as it puffed its way up; “I think I can …I think I can…” And then having made it over the top, it delightedly exclaimed “I knew I could!… I knew I could!”
A focus on healthy living is a key goal at GCPS in 2018. Before school fitness training, including tennis, rugby league, netball and soccer, is well underway. Encouraging parents to provide their children with plenty of sleep and a nutritious breakfast and lunch also assists a growing, healthy body. Each classroom is positive and engaging, with banks of iPads integrated seamlessly within the learning environment. In addition, GCPS offers Robotics, Coding and Maker Space activities, preparing students for a life in the digital era. A focus in the construction and engineering IT area with targeted programmes for female students such as ‘Robot Girls’ has been a huge success.
Before its time in terms of ‘growth mindsets psychology’, this story is a great example of a type of positive thinking self-talk, supported by appropriate strategies, that sets students up for growth and success. By contrast, closed or fixed mindsets would have us believe that people are either smart or not smart, and there is nothing that can be done to change that; nothing could be further from the truth. We know that learning capacity is not fixed for anyone. Our brains are malleable and capable of continually laying down neural pathways, expanding our intellectual capacities. Leveraging off a growth mindset promotes this brain growth even more effectively.
Students are eagerly engaged in the GCPS Choir which is preparing for the Innisfail St Patrick’s Concert on March 17, as well as 30 Instrumental Music students who learn guitar, brass and percussion.
So just like our Year 1 students emulating ‘The Little Engine That Could’, we encourage all at MacKillop to learn with a growth mindset. It is so satisfying to hear our youngsters celebrate; “I knew I could!” There is plenty of room on the MacKillop train; come join us!

St John’s SCHOOL, Silkwood Peta Byran What an exciting Term 1 at St John’s! All students have been working hard to achieve their very best, as at St John’s we know that effort equals success. As we move towards the season of Easter, students have been thinking seriously about how they can be the best person they can be by participating in the season of Lent. The season of Lent lasts for 40 days and began on St Valentine’s Day this year. During Lent we try to become more prayerful, to make our lives simpler and to share what we have with those in need. St John’s students strive to give ‘Alms’ or compassion to all in our community. ‘Let your light shine before others.’ principal.silkwood@cns.catholic.edu.au www.stjohnssilkwood.qld.edu.au

Parenting
Is your emotional baggage impacting the way you raise your kids? STORY Donna Mahoney They say that the only real lessons we learn in life are from our more challenging experiences. Some of these lessons we learn from, some we are still getting over, and some things we may never get over. As parents, these experiences can shape the way we bring up our children; sometimes we are aware of this, often we’re not.
Self-awareness is essential. Once we have that, we can mold our parenting to teach our children what we see as important qualities through our experiences. From the above example, you will be insistent on raising kids that have empathy, independence, and resilience. But the negative, less obvious qualities are likely to be the ones you need to watch out for.
Take a moment to think about your life. What experiences or people have shaped you and your beliefs? Although the key is to try not to place judgement on these experiences, we tend to place them as either negative or positive depending on how they made us feel. Get a piece of paper, split it in half and write down these experiences.
Are you bottling up your anger and then having outbursts because you haven’t learnt a positive healthy way to be angry? Are people in your life treating you poorly because you avoid conflict? Are you treating your kids like babies, doing everything for them so that they can stay kids as long as possible? Do you keep your kids from family members that could potentially emotionally harm them to protect them? Do you stay in an unhealthy relationship because you don’t want your children to have divorced parents?
Now, write out what you learnt from each of these moments, both positive and negative. Lastly, think if any of these things are impacting your parenting? Let’s try a situation together. Say your parents divorced when you were little, and you were raised in a very hostile environment. From this you feel that you learnt positive traits such as empathy, independence and resilience, but also negative things such as growing up too fast, thinking that anger is bad and not having a positive view of relationships. Impact on Parenting Our children do not come with a manual on how to parent them and often, the only way we have learnt how to parent is from our parents. Not only do they show us how, but they also show us how not to raise children as well. As parents, we get to choose which aspects of the way we were parented that we bring into our own parenting. Even the best of us sometimes cringe as we hear our parents’ voice come through our mouths or we do things a certain way, as a subconcious reflection of our parents behaviour.
Only you can analyse your behaviour. Remember you don’t need to be the perfect parent, none of us are. Parenting is about ensuring we raise incredible kids that have a healthy emotional bank which they can draw on at any time they feel they are on the downward turn on the roller coaster that is life. It’s about ensuring we give our children the tools to help foster a belief in themselves that they can get through any moment in their life, grow and learn from it.
Donna from Innate Therapies counsels parents on how they can let go of their emotional baggage (amongst other issues, specialising in attachment and trauma therapy), so they can become more confident, self-aware and happy. She also helps children, couples and families using a range of modalities including Art Therapy, Clayfield Therapy, Sandpay and Symbol work depending on individual need. Advertorial
Learning: It is more than just subject matter “We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist, using technologies that haven’t been invented, to solve problems that we don’t even know are problems yet.” Karl Fisch, Shift Happens. How do you feel about this notion? Perhaps a scary thought. In education, we say, “No way!” This is an exciting time in the lives of our children. Subject matter, or content, is present in all we do. Traditionally it has been how we learn. So, what has changed? It is not so much ‘what’, but ‘how’ children learn that is leading this educational change. Armed with technology and the skills to use it effectively, students can retrieve content faster than teachers can impart it. So, how can we do more than just teach content? It is known as the “4C’s of Education” – Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Communication. This skill development teaches students strategies on how to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations, better preparing them for their future after school. Get ready to have your traditional view on classroom teaching and learning challenged. It is suggested, contemporary learning spaces, supported by engaging, motivational teaching methods are the best preparation for the future. Peace Lutheran College’s progressive approach to learning with modern-day education transformations has provided our Junior School students with flexible
and stimulating learning spaces that promote collaboration and enquiry, and engage students to ask questions and problem solve. We want our students to develop and demonstrate these types of skills and attitudes: •• Collaborators – empathic, compassionate and reliable. •• Self-managers – resilient, responsible and reflective. •• Communicators – confident, responsive and respectful. •• Thinkers – open-minded, flexible and persistent. •• Researchers – curious, courageous and resourceful. Our Head of Junior School, Mrs Sarah Rowan said, “Parents understand that each of their children have their own strengths and limitations. The beauty of the flexible learning model is it allows a ‘way in’ for every learner, something that a more traditionally designed classroom may not have been able to offer.” And our parents agree. A parent of a year 5 student said, “The agile learning spaces at Peace Lutheran College have excited us as a family, but more importantly have had a positive impact on our son’s confidence, curiosity and social skills. The collaborative group setups allow him to openly communicate his ideas and his ideas are recognised as important.” Would you like to see how our classrooms of the future work for students of today? Expert Advice
THE PAKMAG EXPERTS DR ELIZABETH JACKSON
COLLIER LAWYERS
Dear Dr Jackson, my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for a while. Should I be concerned?
Dear Nardine, how can I save money on my family lawyer fees?
Making a baby can be stressful if it doesn’t happen right away, but most couples, given long enough, should fall pregnant naturally. Falling pregnant within 12 months is likely if you’re having sex two to three times per week. Each cycle, there is a week-long ‘fertile window’. It starts about two days before and ends five days after ovulation. During this window, you can improve your chances by having sex every day or second day.
In a lawyer’s world, their time is your money. So, anything you can do yourself will reduce your fees. I suggest:
If you haven’t fallen pregnant within 12 months, see your GP for baseline male and female fertility investigations. Your GP can refer you to a fertility specialist if needed. If you are over 35, have irregular periods or other medical problems, think about seeing a doctor after six months of trying. Keep in mind that, on average, you are only fertile for one in four weeks. Keep stress under control with regular exercise, healthy lifestyle choices and doing things that make you happy.
SUNBIRD ORTHODONTICS Dear Dr Bobby, when should I take my child to see an orthodontist? The moment the tooth fairy enters your life, you should think about seeing an orthodontist. You do not need a referral from your dentist; an orthodontist is a dentist, but they have substantial extra postgraduate training which allows them to concentrate on this complex and crucial aspect of your child’s dental development, while helping your family dentist keep watch on your child’s overall dental wellbeing. Many orthodontic problems, such as crowding, unhealthy bite patterns, and missing teeth are often inherited from parents. However, there are some problems which cannot be blamed on genetics, such as early loss of baby teeth from trauma or decay or thumb sucking. Orthodontists are highly trained to detect developing orthodontic problems from an early age. They often recommend simple interventions to reduce or prevent major problems. Early detection of orthodontic problems takes immense skill, experience and professional judgement, but the benefits of early detection for your child can be enormous. It is well worth having a 15-minute chat with your orthodontist before your child turns nine.

Write out your story. You might even find it therapeutic! What is the history of your relationship? Do you have children, how old? What are your concerns? What would you like to achieve? This is helpful when seeing a client for the first time so our time together is used more effectively. Gather financial records; bank statements, superannuation statements, and so on. Make two copies as some firms charge for photocopying. Prepare a schedule of your major assets and what you think they might be worth, who owns them, and what debts you have. Ask your lawyer what you can do yourself. I regularly have my clients fill in documents in draft for me to check over or I get them to make their own enquiries where they can, eg., getting three quotes from a valuer.
KELLY WEALTH Dear Kelly Wealth, my partner and I are planning on having a baby in the next two years, how can I financially prepare for this? Having an understanding of your income and expenses and knowing how you will be able to cope on a reduced income will help you make decisions around how much time off you can afford. It is also prudent for you to find out what your parental leave entitlements are and whether you are eligible for family support payments like Family Tax Benefits. If you are considering upsizing the car or house, consult a mortgage broker (ahead of time) to review your existing lending and ability to borrow additional funds. With babies also comes the purchase of big-ticket items such as cots, change tables and prams. Saving for these items in advance can minimise this financial impact. Having life and disability insurance is also important to your family’s financial security should you be unable to work or pass away. For mums-to-be, plan ahead as insurers will not insure you during your last trimester. So, seek professional advice with your financial planner early.
The face behind Talk Time Speech AND LANGUAGE Pathology Teagan Pease is the owner of Talk Time Speech and Language Pathology and, with the help of fellow Speech Pathologists Alison Mather and Courtney McClanachan, she helps children in Cairns with communication issues. She began working in private practice in Brisbane, before returning home to Cairns to establish Talk Time Speech and Language Pathology. Teagan and her scientist husband, Bradley, have two sons, Jacob (nearly 2) and Liam (3 months). They are both from North Queensland originally, and still have lots (and lots) of family in Cairns. Fun Fact: Teagan lives next door to her parents! She says, “It's actually amazing - we are constantly passing ingredients and food over the fence, and even the children occasionally.
TALK TIME SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY Dear Teagan, can you please tell me what Speech Pathologists do? Speech Pathologists are university trained health professionals, who diagnose and treat communication and swallowing difficulties. Communication difficulties can include issues with speaking, listening, understanding language, stuttering, reading, spelling, voice or social skills. People might find it hard to communicate due to developmental delays, brain injury, stroke, hearing loss, cerebral palsy or Autism Spectrum Disorder, just to name a few. Many children have no known cause for their communication difficulties. Children who need help from a speech pathologist may need help with following instructions, using sentences, understanding stories, reading, listening, stuttering or pronunciation. Some children need help with social skills like reading social situations and understanding how to interact appropriately with others. Sometimes people need help to swallow safely or help with chewing and moving food around in the mouth, and Speech Pathologists can help. Speech Pathologists diagnose and treat so much more than just speech pronunciation!

Cairns Colonial Club, a family-friendly paradise STORY Lisa Gillman Set on 11 acres of lush tropical gardens, Cairns Colonial Club is truly a hidden gem offering a perfect place for local families to spend quality time together. Tucked away in Manunda, this tropical resort has to be seen to be believed. Walking through the doors of the restaurant, both my boys and I were instantly greeted with warm smiles, and we were amazed as we were shown to our table out on the deck, with views of the lagoon style pools and the lush tropical gardens. This family-friendly Homestead Restaurant offers a relaxed dining experience with a range of mouthwatering meals to choose from, all at very reasonable prices and with an option of adding the soup, salad and dessert bar. I was pleasantly surprised to see such a great selection of kid’s meals which are actually half-sized portions from the a la carte menu. With all meals being free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and with them arriving within 15 minutes of ordering, this was a winning combination for me! I tried the Thai Beef Curry, and it was delicious, the flavours were intense and very authentic. I wasn’t alone in my praise, here’s what my family and fellow PakMag connoisseurs thought of their meals:
Rhys (9): I loved the choice of salads, I could pick exactly what I wanted, I liked that I could choose for myself and try a little bit of everything. Kade (5): I liked the cheeseburger a lot, and I really like all the different desserts. I wanted to eat all of them, but mum said no. Janelle: The garlic bread was devine, plus the staff were friendly and very attentive. Mat: Great steak! Ben (12): Best fries I’ve ever had! Bread rolls and desserts were great too. If that is not enough, did you know that the Cairns Colonial Club also offers complimentary access to their three resort pools when you enjoy lunch at the Homestead Restaurant? What a great way to spend a family afternoon out. If you want to continue your escape, then why not spend the night? They have a great selection of accommodation packages. Their Studio Room is perfect for families, with a kitchenette and the capacity to sleep four people comfortably, or their Resort Rooms are the perfect place to house your visiting relatives. Check out their website www.cairnscolonialclub.com.au or follow their Facebook Page to ensure you are up to date with their latest great deals for locals.

Bump, Bub and Beyond
Determining gender STORY Kate Moloney These days, while it is possible to choose the sex of your child due to the advances in fertility treatment, Embryo Gender Selection is not available to everyone and does not come without significant cost and risk. In Australia, it is only undertaken for health reasons with couples who must undergo the whole process of In Vitro Fertilisation. So, if you have an overwhelming yearning for a child of a specific gender, are there ways to tip the odds in your favour, to conceive a child of your preferrence? Does the fact that there are so many old wives’ tales (plus newer theories on this subject) lead to us questioning whether there may be some truth or validity to these, even though there is no scientific evidence to back them up? If we’ve piqued your curiosity then here are two of the most commonly tried theories. One theory is that the mother’s diet can affect gender. According to this theory, eating alkaline foods, such as bananas, broccoli and potatoes, and avoiding milk, cheese and ice-cream will result in a boy, as the Y (boy) sperm is thought to flourish in an alkaline environment. The X (girl) sperm, on the other hand, prefers an acidic environment created by eating a diet full of fish, meat, cheese and grains. If this method does not appeal then perhaps you might prefer to consider the Shettles Method, developed by
Dr Landrum B. Shettles in the 1960s. This method is based on the theory that the gender can be determined by having intercourse at certain times in the ovulation cycle. The Y (boy) sperm, is fast but less resilient than the X (girl) sperm, which is a slower swimmer but hardier, meaning it survives longer. Therefore, if you want a boy, you should try and conceive during your ovulation day, as the fast-swimming Y (boy) sperm are likely to make it to the egg first. While if you want a girl, you should try and conceive only in the week (or few days) before ovulation as the weaker Y (boy) sperm will have died off, leaving the X (girl) sperm hanging around until the egg is ready. When trying for our third child, while I really didn’t mind, as we already had two beautiful girls, I thought, “What harm is there in trying out the Shettles Method to conceive a boy?” I am not saying that this method was definitely the reason, but we did conceive a boy, and to this day, when he causes more mischief than our two girls combined, my husband takes much enjoyment from reminding me that I wanted ‘the boy’! So, if you do have your heart set on one or the other then perhaps these theories may just assist you. But always remember, - the most important thing of all every baby, regardless of their gender, is a precious gift of life to be treasured.
Did you ever try one of these methods or one of the many other old wives’ tales to influence gender? We’d love to hear your story. Post your story on our Facebook page for the chance to win a prize.

BABY’s stylish sanctuary
Constipation in Babies
STORY Kate Moloney
Is your baby crying, experiencing discomfort and irritability before a bowel movement or having fewer than three bowel movements a week? The cause of their discomfort may be constipation. This problem may be being caused by dehydration, formula milk or the introduction of solid foods.
One of the most enjoyable things of pending parenthood is the chance to create a stylish nursery. When creating this sanctuary there are some things that you should consider. When selecting furniture pieces, your number one priority should be safety. Ensure any items you are buying are Australian certified. For these items, especially if you are planning on more children, it can be a good idea to keep these in unisex colours, like wood and white. If space allows, you may find that separating the room into three zones (one for sleeping, one for feeding and one for playing) works well. Sleeping zone - Don’t be afraid to use playful bedding in bright colours to dress your neutral cot. Adding a soft nightlight that won’t disturb baby’s sleep when checking them during the night or when feeding is a great addition. Feeding zone – Consider a feeding chair that is not only comfortable but also something that will later convert into a great toddler reading chair. An ottoman is also a recommended piece for comfortable feeding. Play zone - Let your creativity run free. Colourful soft mats, plush animals, plus storage boxes and baskets for keeping all of baby’s items handy and sorted. Add colour to the walls with decals that can easily be changed for the next baby or as baby grows into the next stage.
STORY Kalisha Fitsch
If you think your little one may be experiencing constipation then here are a few things that you could try that may help with their discomfort: Encourage exercise: If your baby is a crawler, encourage more crawling! If they are not crawling yet, then move their legs in a circling motion (as if they are riding a bicycle) while they are lying on their back. Massage the stomach: Gently massage your baby’s lower abdomen with three fingers to stimulate the bowels to encourage a bowel movement. You can do this massage several times per day until a bowel movement occurs. Different foods: If your baby is eating solids, pureed apples, plums, blueberries and other foods high in fibre will help out. Incorporating more fruit juice and water into your baby’s diet will help as well, especially prune juice! Switch formula: If your baby is on formula milk, sometimes this can be causing the issue. Talk to your doctor about switching to a different brand, as sometimes sensitivity to certain ingredients can cause constipation. Constipation, while uncomfortable, is common. Try these good ‘ole home remedies to help relieve their pain, however, if you are concerned always consult your GP.

DR PHOEBE HONG - Now in a new convenient location at Cairns Central Plaza I’m pleased to announce that I am now established in my new private rooms on Level 2 of the Cairns Central Plaza. My new rooms are equipped with modern, state-of-the-art equipment, including a colposcope for the assessment of cervix lesions and an ultrasound machine for our obstetric patients. This great location also offers you easy parking options and convenience being opposite the Cairns Central Shopping Centre. It has now been one year since I returned to Cairns and opened my private practice offering obstetrics and gynaecology services. I fell in love with Cairns after moving here from New Zealand to work at the Cairns Base Hospital in 2013 and decided then that this was where I wanted to set up my private practice. This time has enabled me to develop a specialised knowledge of the healthcare needs of the people of Far North Queensland. I realised then that I wanted to be able to offer to the women of this region access to advanced laparoscopy services. So, I spent two years in Melbourne and then Sydney completing intensive training in advanced laparoscopic surgeries being mentored by a number of renowned gynaecologists. My practice now provides the women of Cairns and Far North Queensland specialist care in obstetrics and
gynaecology plus a number of advanced laparoscopic surgeries which I am passionate about. This type of surgery is a modern surgical technique where small incisions, or cuts, which can be as small as 0.5cm, are made, and the surgery is performed through these incisions using tiny instruments and a miniature camera called a laparoscope. The types of laparoscopic surgery that I offer include complicated endometriosis surgery, myomectomy (removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus), prepregnancy cervical suture (for weakened cervix in order to prevent late miscarriages or extremely premature delivery) plus surgeries such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and ovarian cysts. My highly personalised care focuses on your individual wishes and goals as I believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to medicine and surgery. For busy women of all ages, the benefit of the laparoscopic surgery that I offer is that it results in less surgical trauma than major abdominal surgery, and it allows for a quicker recovery. If you would like to find out more about how I could help you, visit my website or call to make an appointment. We are all different, and I would love to be able to assist you with your unique needs and priorities.

Fertility to First Birthday STORY Rose Foster Finding out you’re pregnant, whether it’s for the first or the fifth time, is a very exciting moment in any couple’s life. But once the initial excitement has subsided, the realisation that the next nine months will be jam-packed with preparation for baby’s arrival can be very daunting indeed. Knowing your options can help you feel more at ease as you face this new chapter of your family’s life. So, if you’re a parent-to-be or a new parent, PakMag is here to help with our A to Z guide of all things fertility to first birthday!
I’m pregnant, now what? One of the first things to consider is your healthcare and birthing options, and a big consideration when it comes to this is whether you want to go public or private. If you go via the public system, your first step is to visit your GP, who will guide you through your pregnancy, including referring you for scans and tests. In Cairns, you will have the option of giving birth in the Cairns Hospital or at home with a midwife present (ask your GP about this option as it’s not available for everyone). The private system will allow you to choose your own obstetrician who will look after you throughout your pregnancy and during your labour. Dr Elizabeth Jackson is an excellent choice. She is experienced in looking after both routine and complicated deliveries. Her rooms are located conveniently in Cairns City and you can find out all about the care she and her team offer at www.drelizabethjackson.com. She can even help with fertility. Make sure you check out our “Experts” section in PakMag and online for monthly Q&As with Dr Liz as she explains some hot women’s health topics. Another great Cairns based obstetrician is Dr Pheobe Hong. Her new rooms opposite Cairns Central are beautiful and she offers a range of services including pre-pregnancy care, pregnancy screening and multiple pregnancy care. Visit www.drpheobehong.com.au for more information on the services that Dr. Pheobe offers, FAQs and more information.
Both of these obstetricians deliver at the Cairns Private Hospital (unless otherwise arranged) which is a great option if you’re looking for a more private way to bring your baby into the world. Not only do you have access to a range of experienced professionals, but you also receive comfortable accommodation, a sofa bed for your partner to spend the night, and even a candlelight dinner! Check out www.cairnsprivate.com.au for more information. There are also other professionals that you may want to consider too, including doulas and hypnobirthing. What else should I prepare? Between painting the nursery, buying the pram and maternity wear shopping, the list of what you need to prepare before baby arrives can feel endless. Breaking this down into three categories can make it feel more manageable: home, baby, self. Home Make sure you prepare your home for baby’s arrival. This, of course, includes preparing your baby’s room and baby proofing but you should also consider purchasing things that will make your life with a new born a little easier. A comfy feeding chair, a state of the art baby monitor, a night time baby ‘shusher’ and baby food maker. Harvey Norman Cairns has some fantastic deals on baby products, so hop in store today and grab a baby bargain or shop online at www.harveynorman.com.au

You can also hire baby equipment which is great if you’re holidaying or you don’t want to splurge on buying your own. With hire periods of up to 6 months, companies such as Hire for Baby offer a range of products such as capsules, breast pumps and cots and for PakMag readers, there’s 5 per cent off! Simply visit www.hireforbaby.com and enter the code PAKMAG for your discount. Plus, if you hire a Medela Symphony breast pump and decide to buy one, you’ll receive 30 per cent off! Baby In terms of what you need to buy for baby, our advice is to not go overboard and buy months’ worth of clothing; you don’t know how big or small your baby will be, how fast they’ll grow, or how much stuff you’ll be given by friends and family. Make sure you also have items to wash and change baby too, but just like the clothes, don’t buy too many nappies before you know if your baby will fit into them! Self
PhyxMe Physiotherapy is another superb Cairns based service which can help you pre and post pregnancy, with prenatal yoga and massage, post-natal Pilates, pre/post-natal physio and even paediactric physio. Check out www.phyxme.com.au for more details. Physiotherapy can do wonders for your body both during and after pregnancy. Proactive Physiotherapy offer services to help women at this stage of their lives, including dealing with antenatal and postnatal conditions, pre/post surgery, pelvic floor and abdominal weakness, prolapse and more. Proactive Physio pride themselves on offering confidential and private assessments. Visit www.proactivepysio.com.au to see how they can help. And finally, don’t forget some retail therapy for yourself! Investing in a maternity dress or two can not only make you feel like you have something comfy to throw on, but it can also give you some self-confidence that you may be lacking. Queen Bee have offered PakMag readers a 5 per cent discount on maternity wear, so head to www.queenbee.com.au and use code PM18.
With a bundle of joy growing inside you, it can sometimes be easy to focus all of your attention on making sure baby is ok and well-prepared for. This is even more the case when baby arrives. Looking after your little one takes precedence and thinking about your own needs is the furthest thing from you mind.
Baby is here!
Repeat after me, “I will look after myself”!
If your baby isn’t sleeping well, services such as a sleep consultant may be the key to a peaceful night’s sleep. Joanna from SleepyTime Baby Sleep consultant will give you the skills, tips and hints to get your baby (and you!) sleeping well. First and foremost, look after your body. Exercise such as Pilates is brilliant for pregnancy. Their fantastic introductory offer for all new clients means you’ll get five classes for just $60.00 (t&cs apply). Their introductory offer of six classes for $60.00 means you’ll be able to experience reformer classes at a reduced cost. Visit www.studiopilates.com/cairns or call them on 4041 4140. Sportsworld is a great option for mums-to-be and new mums. Classes such as yoga and body balance are wonderful as a low impact option for keeping active during pregnancy, as well as the facilities such as the pool, ladies only gym and personal trainers who can tailor fitness programs to you. The childminding service also means that you can do your work out knowing that bub is looked after. Check them out at www.sportsworldcairns.com or visit them at 268 Gatton Street.
So, your baby has arrived, now what? Well, aside from the day in, day out routine of feeding, changing and sleeping, there are some other things that you could consider at this point.
Entertaining baby can be something that leaves us scratching our heads, but there are some great options in Cairns to help you out. Kindermusik offers baby music classes from birth and will give you and baby a fun experience which will also assist with you child’s brain development too. Visit www.kmusikcairns.com and see what a class with Nicole can do for you and your little one. Why not opt for some physical development time at Inflatable Kingdom Cairns? This great indoor play area offers an area for little ones and at $9 for a 2.5 hour session (for under 5s), it’s an affordable way to spend some time in between naps! Visit them at 164 Mayers Street, Manunda. For some free fun, Cairns Libraries offers a range of classes including Baby Rhyme Time and First5Forever to entertain and engage your little one in an environment aimed at developing your child’s pre-literacy and social skills. Check out www.cairns.qld.gov.au/library for more details.
So, congratulations on your bundle of joy and good luck! There is obviously much more to learn about what to expect and what to do but we hope this little guide to what’s available in your area has steered you in the right direction!

CLASSROOM bugs: BUGS: Classroom PART Part 1
STORY Mat May
STORY Dr Nicole Higgins
My children continually provide me with some of my most rewarding experiences. However, they also come with many challenges, and for a dad, one of those is the conversation I must have with my son. He is approaching ‘that age’ and, I’m sure, beginning to wonder about his changing body, so I now find myself gearing up for his inevitable questions.
“Hello Ms Jones. Sophie isn’t feeling well. Could you please come and pick her up from the sick bay?” Why does this always happen as you are half way through your grocery shop or heading into an important meeting? The classroom is not only a breeding ground for fertile imaginations but also for school bugs. While there’s often no realistic way to prevent children catching
But, should I initiate this conversation? When is a good time? Should I wait for him to come to me? If he comes to me, do I use the correct anatomical terms for ‘things’ or do I use cute euphemisms? Should it be a serious conversation or do I lighten it with ‘Dad’ humour? Am I overthinking it?

While I don’t consider myself a parenting expert, I do like to think I have been doing a good job so far, and this is such an important phase of his development, so I want to get it right. With that in mind, I did what any responsible dad in my situation would do… I got a book!
Snot, coughs and sore throats are usually caused by a virus. Viruses
There are a number of books available that cover everything from body changes to mood swings to new found desires and urges. They comprehensively cover any questions he may have about his transition into puberty, and you can then quite easily expand on anything he is unsure of.

are treated with fluids and rest as antibiotics don’t make any difference. Viruses are often easy to catch, but their spread can be reduced by keeping your child at home and good hand hygiene. 2. School Sores (aka Impetigo). These crusty yellow sores are caused by a staphylococcal or common during the warmer months, Impetigo gets into the deeper layers of the skin through cuts and sores. These sores are filled with bacteria which can weep; which makes it a highly contagious infection. Impetigo is generally not dangerous but usually needs a trip to the GP to get treated with antibiotics. Good hand hygiene, covering the sores with a dressing and not picking at scabs are the key to stopping this spreading amongst friends and family. Young children tend to get sick more often as they build up an immunity however if you are concerned, your family GP is always there to help.

Adult Education
It’s never too late to chase your dreams STORY Kalisha Fitsch
We are constantly reminded that time is ticking. The days, weeks, months and years all seem to pass by quicker and quicker the older we get. Having children often heightens our realisation of just how fast our life is passing us by, and this can leave us questioning whether we are really making the most of our time. In these moments, thoughts of chasing our dreams enter our mind but are just as quickly met by our self-doubts, our “Oh, it’s too late for me to be able to do that now” thoughts. But is it really too late? The answer is no! The reality is that life is growth and therefore it’s no surprise that a career path you found fascinating at 18 may not necessarily still interest you at 35. Whether you are 25 or 50, it’s never too late to start doing something you love. In the 21st century, with so many options available for further education including varied delivery methods, many people are taking up study to embark upon new careers, regardless of their age. Changes in life situations have seen once career professionals, now mums, change from accounting careers to become teachers as the hours and holidays suit their lifestyles better. Previous office managers have made the change to freelance writing to enable them to work from home. Many home-based businesses have been established by mums who are successfully combining their passion with their family commitments.
Not entirely convinced? Well, there are plenty of women all around the world proving that you’re never too old to make that change. What about Australian mum-of-two, Naomi Simson? You probably have heard of this lady in red; she’s an entrepreneur, author and CEO of the online gift retailer RedBalloon. But did you also know that she had a well-paid corporate job, that would have been the envy of many yet didn’t make her happy? So, she made the change to do something that she was passionate about. Anna Mary Robertson Moses, otherwise known as Grandma Moses, proves it really is never too late; she began her painting career at 78 years of age. In 2006, one of her paintings sold for a staggering USD 1.2 million. Everyone's situation is different but what is the same, is that to make this change, you need to stay determined and always have a positive, never give up attitude. We are not saying that it is going to be easy, but if it is what you want, then your hard work will pay off and you will thank yourself down the track that you made this choice. No pain, no gain! Your life is yours to live. It is up to you to make it the life of your dreams. So, if you have the opportunity to make a change that will lead to your greater happiness, grab it with both hands. Make that positive change that in the long run will benefit not just you but also your whole family. Happiness really is contagious.

Challenges
Developmental Disabilities in Children STORY Rose Foster As parents, navigating the minefield of bringing up children can be a challenge. The trial and error nature of parenting, and the fact that every child develops at different rates means that knowing whether our children are on the right track can feel like a guessing game. This is particularly true when it comes to identifying problems.
sure you don’t panic if your little one is slightly behind expected milestones, these are only a guide. It’s when significant delays occur, or delays across multiple aspects of your child’s development that further investigation should be done. What causes developmental disabilities?
Developmental disabilities range from autism and behavioural disorders to cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, so spotting signs of these disabilities can be easy or complicated. Certain issues can be identified at birth (and sometimes even before), but some problems don’t become apparent until certain milestones are not being met and we realise that a child is behind in their development.
For many developmental disabilities, the cause is unclear and it is often a number of factors which contribute to the problem. The main risk factors include problems at birth (including prematurity, low birth weight or oxygen deprivation), medical conditions (including ear infections, illnesses and injuries), and environmental factors (including trauma, a mother drinking or taking drugs prior to birth or poor living conditions).
So, how do we identify developmental disabilities?
What should you be looking for?
Well, unfortunately for many of these disabilities, there is no cut and dry test, so observation is the key to identification in the early stages. Knowing when a child should be reaching certain milestones is a starting point. It will help you identify whether your child is delayed in their development. It is important to make
There are five main areas in which a developmental disability may occur: cognitive skills, social and emotional skills, speech and language skills, fine and gross motor skills, and activities in daily living. If a child exhibits issues with two or more of these areas, it is considered to be a global developmental delay.
www.pakmag.com.au | March 2018 53
Challenges
Cognitive delays affect a child’s ability to learn, think and problem solve. Early ways to identify this is to ask yourself if your baby exhibits curiosity or if your toddler is learning new words, colours or counting. If the answer is no to these things, it may be a sign of developmental delay. Social and emotional delays present themselves in a child’s ability to relate and interact with others. Babies should smile at people and make noises in an attempt to communicate and toddlers should be able to express their feelings and make friends. A lack of these signs could be cause for concern. Speech and language delays may seem obviously identifiable but there are some things to consider that you may not have been aware of; it is not always the case that a child can’t pronounce words. With babies, the absence of babbling or cooing could help identify issues but in toddlers, their ability to understand instructions, tell stories that keep on track or use words in the correct context could also be telling signs. This type of delay is quite common which is perhaps the reason that Speech and Language Pathologists are trained specially to deal with this, whilst the other four issues are generally dealt with by paediatricians or occupational therapists. Fine and gross motor delays can be identified in babies if they are not able to hold objects (fine motor) or if they don’t begin to sit up, roll or walk (gross motor). As children get older, not being able to hold tools or draw (fine motor) or having difficulties jumping or climbing may indicate a developmental delay. Daily living problems simply mean that day to day tasks are not handled by the child. In babies, we as parents naturally do this for them, but if children don’t begin to eat or dress themselves, herein lies a potential issue. How does a child receive a diagnosis? Generally, your first step is to visit your GP who will advise you of the next steps based on his initial
54 March 2018 | www.pakmag.com.au
assessment of your child. Your GP will generally refer you to a specialist or for further testing and investigation based on this assessment. If you think your child has a speech or language delay, you can opt to visit a speech and language pathologist without a referral from your doctor. Remember, early intervention is best and there’s no harm in going to the doctor if you think something’s not quite right. As the age old saying goes, “It’s better to be safe than sorry”, and it’s true when it comes to helping your child with their development. What treatment is available? Depending on your child’s diagnosis, there are a number of different treatment options. Most of these include the help of a specialised professional. Occupational therapists are amongst the most common options for children with developmental disabilities, along with physiotherapist, speech and language pathologist and behavioural therapists. Living with developmental delay Living with any kind of disability comes with challenges, but with a positive outlook and the right tools and professionals at your disposal, living a happy and fulfilled life is absolutely possible. Understanding that life won’t be bad, it will just be different is a great way to look at life when raising a child with a developmental delay. With early intervention and treatment, many children with developmental disibilities grow up to become independent adults. For those with more serious developmental disabilities, particularly those who have trouble with completing day to day tasks or have low cognitive function, there are still options to help them live the best life they can. This includes community living, providing them with the equipment that they need and equipping their families with the skills and tools to help.
Exploring Play
GROSS MOTOR PLAY STORY Sharon Coles, Occupational Therapist, Cairns Paediatrics. Gross motor play comprises of the movements that involve our large muscles such as walking, running, jumping, kicking, throwing and catching. The many physical benefits include the development of balance and flexibility, fitness, strength, and muscle and bone health. Children also learn rules and boundaries and have opportunities to form friendships and develop social skills. Playing in the backyard, at the beach or the park naturally develops gross motor skills, but some skills need to be taught. Being active with your child is fun and a great opportunity to strengthen your bond. Gross motor play can start from a very young age. Babies and toddlers love to play with rattles, bang spoons on objects and catch bubbles. Older children can enjoy ball games, bike riding, obstacle courses or splashing around in a pool or one of our many beautiful waterholes. Team sports don’t suit all children, especially those who may not be as proficient in their gross motor development. Those children might enjoy a club sport such as tennis, karate, gymnastics or dance.

Filling 5 eggs 2 tbs milk 3 tbs pesto 1 cup roasted pumpkin 100g feta 50g sundried tomatoes 30g spinach 2 large swiss chard leaves, chopped 1 red onion diced chilli flakes, to taste salt and pepper to taste
Method Preheat oven to 160ºC In a bowl add the almond meal, teff and flaked almonds along with the cinnamon and mix well. Add rice malt syrup or honey and coconut oil then stir to combine.
Method Preheat oven to 180ºC. Mix together the ingredients for the pastry until they have congealed enough that you can roll it into a ball. Mould into a 25cm diameter pie tin and cook in the oven for 10 minutes. While the crust is cooking, cook onions and chilli in a good glug of olive oil until onion is translucent. Layer pumpkin, onion and chilli in the crust. Beat the eggs, milk and pesto together with some salt and pepper and fold through the feta, spinach and chard. Pour into the pie crust. Pop the pie back into the oven for 15- 20 minutes, or until egg mixture has cooked completely.
Add the crumble dough to a baking sheet and press down into a large biscuit. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown then allow to cool. Meanwhile, divide the berries into 4 bowls and spoon over yoghurt. Using your hands, roughly break up the biscuit into large chunks and add to the bowls. Drizzle over additional honey or rice malt syrup and serve immediately.

This interactive way of gift-giving is an exciting experience and will be a memory not quickly forgotten by your guests. Who knows what they will find! You could hide away pirate or mermaid dolls, whalethemed educational games or other ocean-themed bits. Sweet ocean treats

We all wish to live a healthier lifestyle, not only for ourselves, but also for the environment. But with the pace of life, it can be difficult to find the time and motivation to transform this wish into a reality. However, it can be easier than you might think. There are some simple things that you can do and implement in your home and life, and these small changes that you make can have large positive effects on not just your health but also the worlds. Reusable over single use: Reduce your carbon footprint by reducing the plastic waste in your home. Store your ingredients in glass jars and containers, take fabric reusable shopping bags with you when shopping and for school lunches try sectioned lunchboxes (or bento boxes). Plus, on a home dĂŠcor front, ingredients stored in jars can make for a wonderfully rustic feel! Natural snacks: Packaged snacks are often highly processed and create single-use plastic waste. Invest in a beautiful fruit bowl or basket so you can incorporate natural snacks such as bananas, oranges, and apples into your life. Not only are fruits very good for you (obviously!), they can brighten up your kitchen and the waste they leave behind is easy to turn into compost to help your garden thrive. Plants, plants, plants: Big and small, plants work wonders. Some are known to be particularly effective at filtering the air in your home, thus creating a healthier living space. Recommended plants for this include ferns, lilies, palms, and ivy. These will have your home looking good and smelling great too. Chlorine-free play: Have you considered a chlorine-free swimming pool? A pool that is fully enriched with oxygen, has no odours, no taste, that is soft and gentle to your skin and reduces water waste with no shower needed after swimming! If you are interested, contact Swimart Cairns today. Watch your life transform with these little changes to your home and lifestyle that will have you feeling not only healthier but also happier because you are helping to make a difference.

Advertorial
Enjoy the exclusive benefits of our Platinum Paws Club STORY Jane Quinn An annual visit to the vet is a vital part of pet ownership. As our pets age much more rapidly than people, major health changes can occur in a short amount of time. The risks of cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and other serious conditions all increase with age. Regular wellness examinations allow your veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s general health and diagnose, treat or prevent any health problems before they become serious illnesses. Annual vet visits are also the perfect time to ensure your pet’s vaccinations and essential preventative health care are up to date which is extremely important. Vaccines maintain immunity and prevent infectious diseases. Infectious diseases can be spread via the air or through contact with a parasite, a virus or fecal matter which is brought inside on your shoes, so even indoor pets should be vaccinated. Most of the diseases we vaccinate against have no specific cure or where treatment is available it can be prolonged, costly and often unsuccessful. A vaccination with us is more than just a jab. Our vaccinations are always performed by our experienced vets and your appointment time includes an extended 15-minute period to allow for a thorough head to tail examination of your pet plus time to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your pet’s health.
To assist you in keeping your pet in tip-top condition, our vaccinations also include a FREE 12-month membership to our Platinum Paws Club which allows you to access some great benefits including: •• 15 per cent discount on after-hours consultations. A vet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We’re here when you need us. •• Discounted heartworm preventative injection. •• Free single dose of intestinal wormer (per year). •• 15 per cent discount on food and treats. •• 15 per cent discount on preventative health care. •• 15 per cent discount on merchandise. •• Free unlimited weight assessments. •• Free unlimited dental examinations. •• Two free nail clips per year. •• 15 per cent discount on wellness blood screens. •• 15 per cent discount on microchipping. •• 15 per cent discount on early desexing. •• 50 per cent discount on Puppy Preschool. •• Four weeks free insurance cover (T & Cs apply). For more information about the importance of annual checkups and vaccinations or to learn more about the benefits of our exclusive Platinum Paws Club check out our website or contact us at either of our convenient locations.
