May is your month. It’s the month where your children toil to make beautiful crafts for you, it’s the month where you get the best breakfast in bed of your life and it’s the month that you get one full day of peace and relaxation. Obviously, I’m just kidding! But we do have you covered for making your Mother’s Day a great one! Our Mother’s Day gift guide and Mother’s Day lunch features will help you plan out your day and shop for something nice for your own mum (or drop hints to the kids!). Plus, we highlight three incredible mums in the community who wear another uniform over their permanent “supermum” suit! Our “Mums In Uniform” feature story celebrates the women who give their time to their family and to their community. Are you gearing up to send your little one off to school in 2019 or 2020? Then you can’t miss our enrolment guide, a comprehensive look into many schools in the area and how you can enrol. This month, I spoke to many Principals when we were gathering information for the magazine, and my conversations with those Principal’s who work in schools which are in small towns inspired me to write a piece about moving to the country. If you fancy a change of pace, check out what the locals have to say on page 13. Until next time, have an amazing month, and I’ll see you in June for the PakMag Expo. Head to our website for more information! Happy Mother’s Day, PakMag mums!

The Thing Is
The Thing Is... STORY Bree James
I couldn’t wait for my babies to say their first word, and after many “mum, mum, mum” training sessions, they both said “Mum”, before they said “Dadda”, and I was stoked. But this soon turned to despair when I realised that this progressed to them being trained to call out “Mum” in the middle of the night, “Mum” whenever they hurt themselves and “Mum” if they wanted something. “Mum” if they just couldn’t see me anymore. Every day it’s “Mum, Mum, Mum.” The thing is, I think us mums do this to ourselves. We try to be super mum and fulfil every want and need as soon as our family demands it. It is exhausting. Why does everyone need Mum especially when she is on the toilet, on the phone, in the shower, talking to a friend, cooking, getting dressed, putting makeup on, having a nap, reading something or having some me time just sitting down? Why does no one need Mum when she is cleaning? Seriously! Why doesn’t anyone interrupt me whilst cleaning? Whilst I am at it, why can’t anyone put their ‘stuff’ where it belongs? Why do shoes go next to the shoe rack, clothes next to the laundry basket or next to their draw, dirty plates next to the sink or toys next to the toy box? And lastly, why can’t anyone find their ‘stuff’? Why do mums have to be part detective, part MacGyver to solve problems like the missing sports shirt that has disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle of kids’ crap? And now you have to MacGyver it and create a new red shirt and put the number on using a black marker in time to play soccer.
Why? Why? Why? Why are our families trained by us to rely on mum for so much? Are our children secretly trying to drive us insane so that we call them the wrong name, put our keys in the fridge, and tell them to feed the dog to the sausage? Stuff, our mothers did to us as children that we swore we would never do as a mum? I think so. I don’t want to scare you, but I think there is a conspiracy amongst children all over the globe since the beginning of time to drive their mothers crazy. There is only one thing we can do about it… Drive them crazy back. My vow is that I will continue to hide vegetables in their food badly, dish up foods they hate because they are good for them, give them kisses at the school gate, tell embarrassing stories from their childhood, nag them until they hear my voice in their head before they do the wrong thing, mimic them when they are behaving like two-year-olds, and tell them they can’t do things because it’s bad for them like drink soft drink or play on their devices for more than an hour even though their friends at school can. But most of all, I will tell them how much I love them every single day and that I am so blessed to be their mumma. That being their mum is my best job in the whole world, and that even though they drive me insane, and that I have no personal space when they’re around, I love them dearly, and they are the thing I am proudest of in my life. Happy Mother’s Day ladies! My wish for all mums on our special day is that we get to pee in peace.

Celebrating Mums: Mothers in Uniform STORY Kate Moloney It’s May, the month when the second Sunday is dedicated to celebrating all mothers and all the wonderful things they do every single day. A mother’s work can often go unappreciated, and the magnitude of the role is often underestimated, that is until she’s not there to do it. I’m sure mothers everywhere would agree that their role as a mother is their most important, but there are many other roles that many mums also perform. There are so many special women in our community who not only give daily to their family, but also give back to their community through their work - mothers who slip another uniform on over the top of their permanent ‘supermum’ suit.

We were lucky enough to chat with three Cairns women who are ‘Mothers in Uniform’ to find out how they feel about motherhood, their career and the juggling act they perform daily.
Jane Tanswell Sergeant, Queensland Police Service. Jane is a Tablelands girl who started out as a hairdresser, then was a medic with the Australian Army Reserve before joining the Queensland Police Service in 2000. Jane and her husband (who is also a police officer) have three beautiful daughters, Taslyn, 10 years old, Ashlyn, 8 years old and Shaylyn, 5 years old.
Feature
Jane’s police career has included nine years spent on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait before returning to Cairns in 2014 for her children’s schooling needs. Jane said, “As a people person, I have always cherished the fact that I can help and empower people in this profession, whether it be community members or fellow members of the Police Service.” Whilst Jane loves being a police officer, the thing she loves most about her life is her family. Jane said, “All the best days of my life have been spent with my family, usually with a little adventure, boating or an isolated island involved!” On the matter of juggling work and home, Jane said she is lucky to be working in an organisation that is supportive of families, and that being organised is key to work and family life running smoothly. She added, “My husband is a very involved father and manages the mornings while I start work early so I can finish at 3.00pm when I change out of the uniform and become Mumma Taxi Driver to the after-school activities, as well as being the dreaded homework whip cracker! I am very lucky to have such a dedicated husband and father who shares cooking and cleaning.”
On the subject of balancing work and motherhood, Raelene very wisely recommends having a great support network and not being afraid to ask for help. She said, “It is so important that mums take some time to do things for themselves, even if it is only going for a walk on the beach.” This Mother’s Day, Raelene is looking forward to just hanging out with her family and catching up with friends.
Carlie Thirlwell Public Health Nurse. Carlie has been nursing for over 20 years and has been living in Cairns since 2004, being originally from Melbourne. Carlie and her husband have three children, Will, 10 years old, Harry, 8 years old, and India, 5 years old.
This Mother’s Day, Jane is looking forward to her daughters’ lovingly prepared breakfast in bed, and they will definitely be visiting the Grandmothers and a Great Grandmother between Edmonton, the Atherton Tablelands and Wolfram.
Raelene Henery Navy Reservist. Raelene, a Navy Reservist, and her husband, who runs his own business, have lived in Cairns for several years with their two children Kara, 16 years old and Piper, 10 years old. Since 2014, Raelene has been working with the Navy Indigenous Development Program and currently her role is as a Divisional Petty Officer. While Raelene is in the Navy Reserves, prior to this she served 12 years full time in the Navy. Raelene said that there are too many things to list as to why she loves her role, noting, “It’s the most rewarding job I have done, and I hope to continue on for as long as possible.”
Carlie says nursing is a fantastic career as there are so many areas to specialise in and you can travel the world. Her career has included time as a paediatric nurse, a child health nurse and now as a public health nurse. In Carlie’s eyes, public health nursing is exciting because you never know what communicable disease or outbreak you will be investigating that day! When we asked Carlie how she felt about managing the juggling act of mum duties and work, she said, “My best advice is, don’t beat yourself up and always remember you are doing the best you can. If your children feel loved, it will all turn out ok in the end, even if you can’t make it to sports day. Be kind to yourself!” This Mother’s Day, Carlie is looking forward to ‘hopefully’ having a sleep in followed by receiving the lovely homemade gifts her children always make for her. She hopes to end the day with some yummy chocolates and a nice drop of red wine. On Sunday 13th May, be sure to treat the mothers in your world to a day that they are sure to remember. A day of relaxation, a day of pampering, a day of being cared for to say thanks for all they do, have done and continue to do every day for you and your loved ones.

Moving to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches Admit it. The thought has crossed your mind at some point to pack up the family and move to the country for a simpler, more connected life. Feed the family organic produce from your own garden, educate your children in a small and close-knit school where you are part of the ‘family’, and be part of a community where everyone knows your name. Well PakMag Parents, it’s time to weigh up the options! We are blessed in North Queensland that moving to the country doesn’t have to be five hours from civilization. You can literally have the best of both worlds if you are up for the commute, or if you are lucky enough to be able to work from anywhere. There are loads of benefits for your family. The outdoor lifestyle, lower crime rates and stronger relationships and connection to neighbours certainly is a wonderful prospect. Don’t get us wrong, there are some negatives which come with moving to a rural town too. Limited job opportunities, distance from medical facilities and lack of resources (such as swimming pools or high-speed internet) can contribute towards the ‘reasons not to move’ list. In spite of that, we interviewed a few parents from towns around FNQ and they all agreed that the positives far outweighed the negatives. Here are five towns that are looking for new residents:
Dimbulah Location: 114 kilometres from Cairns on the Atherton Tablelands Population: 1,414
Schools: St Anthony’s School (Catholic School, Prep – Year 6), Dimbulah State School (Prep – Year 10) Tammy Sivyer and her husband, Keith moved to the small rural town of Dimbulah along with their three daughters, Clancie, 11, Ricki, 10 and Kelly Dan, 6, seven years ago and their son, Mac, was born three years ago. “We are raising four beautiful strong children in the heart of Dimbulah and utilising all that this country community has to offer.” Tammy says. “I love that we have everything we need at our disposal.” Their rural lifestyle by no means is slow with the family kept busy with sport as they attend soccer club, swimming club, horse sports club, Rhee Tae Kwon Do and more. “This is a safe, family-friendly, multicultural community”, Tammy continues. “It’s nice to know that you can call on your neighbour if needed, especially as my husband works FIFO.” Tammy’s children attend St Anthony’s School where Clancie was awarded school captain. It’s a school Tammy describes as “A very closely bonded school between parents, teachers and students.” “The girls love attending St Anthony’s because everyone is encouraged to join in. They have a great rapport with their teachers and our school has new modern computer and tech services which the kids love.”

Chrissie Cosentino Di Silva also shares the sentiment about the sense of community in the town and St Anthony’s School, which her children also attend. “St Anthony's is a great little school with great heart. We have a wonderful P&F association who, with other parents, help fundraise to help our children in the classroom.” Although Chrissie speaks largely positively about the town, she does acknowledge that there are some downsides that travel for healthcare is often necessary, and phone and internet services are not the best.
Silkwood Location: Roughly halfway between Tully and Innisfail Population: 713 Schools: St John’s School (Catholic School, Prep – Year 6), Dimbulah State School (Prep – Year 6) Linda Ridolfi lives in Silkwood with her husband and children, and in fact, they have only ever lived in the area. The family enjoy tending to their cattle and veggie patch, and their 80 acres affords Linda and her husband the ability to give their children the rural NQ lifestyle that they grew up with. Linda’s children attend St John’s School and she loves how close they are with their teachers.
Tully Location: About halfway between Cardwell and Innisfail Population: 2,436 Schools: St Clare’s School (Catholic School, Prep – Year 6), Tully State School (Prep – Year 6), Tully State High School (Year 7 – Year 12) Vanessa Kerr lives in Tully with her husband, Stuart and children, Danielle, 10 and Matthew, 7. “Tully is a lovely rural town with great family values.” Vanessa says. “Family life is, at times, quiet with quality time spent fishing, swimming in local creeks and walks on the beach.” “My children love their school, St Clare’s, because it has community values, faith and knowledge, it is a small school where all the children know and care for one another.” Vanessa describes Tully as the perfect place for those looking for a quiet, friendly country town that is not too far from a big city. And although Tully is known for its high annual rainfall, Vanessa thinks that’s one of the best things about the place (despite it bringing out the mozzies at times, but hey, that’s the whole of FNQ)!
South Johnstone Location: 10 kilometres south of Innisfail Population: 411 Schools: St Rita’s School (Catholic School, Prep – Year 6), South Johnstone State School (Prep – Year 10) Sarah Saro is a South Johnstone local who loves the peace and quiet that the town affords her family. “I love living here as everyone knows each other and is friendly,” she says. “We live in a quiet rural area where our daughter can ride her bike and pat the horses across the road.” Sarah chose St Rita’s School for her daughter, Robyn as her husband is a former student who enjoyed his time there. “When we enrolled our daughter they all knew who we were.” Sarah says. “The school is wonderful! My child would not settle at daycare very well but loves her school and doesn't hesitate anymore at drop off.”
Innisfail Location: 87 kilometres south of Cairns Population: 7,176 Schools: Good Counsel Primary School (Catholic School, Prep – Year 6), Good Counsel College (Catholic School, Year 7 – Year 12) Innisfail State School (Prep – Year 6), Innisfail State College (Year 7 - Year 12). Terri-Ellen Wiber and her family live in Innisfail. For her, it’s a place where community comes together. Terri recently held a family fun day and the amount of support she received to help raise money for her sick niece astounded her. Terri and her family love the outdoor lifestyle that Innisfail provides and they love the farming side of the town as well. Terri’s children, Bray, 4 and Torah, 7 attend Good Counsel Primary School and she describes it as one big family. “Every student and teacher have a connection,” she says, “The Principal makes sure everyone is doing well at all times and gives every moment of his time to the kids at the school.” Erik D’urso is another local who loves the small town for its friendliness and also acknowledges that his son, Brayden, 6, loves his school, Good Counsel Primary School for its great teachers and facilities. “Life is good here,” Erik says. “There’s great opportunities for sports to keep kids busy. We have plenty of work here so life is busy.” Do you live in a small town? Send in your pictures with names and ages to admin@pakmag.com.au to be featured in our Small Town Shout Out!

With Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of this month, I am drawn to reflect on the parallel between the mothers, and mother figures, in our lives and the teachers at our school.
We are so fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful part of the world.
It’s a trait of mums the world over, to endeavour to ensure their child is happy, safe and healthy, and they generally go out of their way to guarantee this is the case. They pave the way for their child to grow into a successful, content and well-rounded adult by guiding them and providing the best for them whenever they can. Similarly, our teachers have a genuine desire to go above and beyond and have an ‘open door policy’ that ensures every student feels comfortable, safe and happy. They know each student well. They know their hopes and dreams. They know their strengths and weaknesses. And they do everything they can to ensure they provide the opportunities to each individual student, with an honest wish that the children under their wing are able to reach the stars.
The Atherton Tableland is indeed a magical place and we are looking forward to experiencing and exploring the surrounds of Lake Tinaroo on our annual school camp in early May. It is not just the beauty of the landscape that makes working in our community so incredible. It is the people and, particularly in May, our thoughts turn to all the ladies in our community who make such a difference to the lives of so many. To celebrate these wonderful women, we have a Liturgy followed by morning tea and entertainment from our choir and instrumental students. Classes are preparing gifts to mark the occasion and the students also have the opportunity to purchase gifts at the Mother’s Day stall. Later this month, we have a visit from the Life Education Van and hope that when engaging with the activities, the students will make links with what they do beyond school in regards to their health and well-being.
So, this month, we not only say a big “Thank you” to mum, we also say thank you to our incredible teachers.
Have a wonderful May and make sure that you take time to say thank you to your mothers, grandmothers and aunts.

St Rita’s SCHOOL, Babinda Judy Billiau Watching the students working away in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden this month, it seemed particularly poignant, with Mother’s Day on our doorstep, that our students are helping nurture and grow something, just as their mothers have for them. Taking stock of where we’ve come from and appreciating the efforts that our mothers make to help mould us into the people we will become are lessons that we’re proud to say that we teach our students. We teach our students to take some time every day to thank their amazing mothers, but on this day in particular, it’s a time to pamper the mothers in our life. Here at St Rita’s, our ‘Pampering Day’ for all the mothers in the St Rita’s community is a wonderful way for students to spoil their mothers. With manicures and massages from their own children, the day is sure to be fun for all – I’m looking forward to seeing the painted fingers! Don’t forget to say “Thank You” to your mothers, grandmothers, and aunties this month! principal.babinda@cns.catholic.edu.au www.stritasbabinda.qld.edu.au

Mothers. They are a cornerstone of our society and teaching our students the importance of loving and respecting their own is engrained in all that we do here at Good Counsel Primary. This Mother’s Day, as with many before, students welcome their mothers, step mothers, foster mothers, aunties and grandmothers to the school with a special morning tea, and an expo of their children’s talent. Working over several weeks to perfect the perfect poem, song or small play goes a long way to helping students understand how much their own mothers do for them and acts as a way of thanking them for being an outstanding parent.
Be it a skinned knee, a scary dream or a broken heart, kids instinctively reach for their mum. Such confidence in mothers’ compassion and care is born of experience starting from the earliest days of love, nurture and protection.
Our school presentations and the wonderful handmade cards created at school are often those most treasured by mothers who will so look forward to receiving them on Sunday 13th May. “We cannot all do great things but we can do small things with great love.” - Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and grandmothers from the staff and students at Good Counsel Primary.
Mother’s Day brings us the opportunity for both thanks giving and promise; thanks for our lived experience of all who care for us with mother-like love, and our promise to support the role of mothering at its best through our personal, family and community recognition, respect and support. Motherly love and affection are depicted in so many ways; in my full letter, I share two of my favourite images with you, one religious and one from Bil Keane’s newspaper comic series Family Circus. For my full letter, please see www.pakmag.com.au

With a hug, a kiss or a silent prayer, let’s thank our mums for multiplying love through us! That’s what we will be doing at MacKillop.

St John’s SCHOOL, Silkwood Peta Byran At St John’s in Silkwood we seek to live Gospel values and empower students with a code of behaviour based on Catholic moral principles and the teachings of the Gospels. It is with optimism and a deep sense of privilege and purpose that we prepare our students to engage with and make an authentic contribution to wider the society. We also strive to ensure that all students appreciate the intrinsic worth of who they are, to value diversity and treat each other with dignity, enabling them, in turn, to promote and respect the dignity of all. All the students at St John’s are so excited about our Mother’s Day celebration, Friday 11th May. The students have asked to do a prayer service for their Mums to show them how much they love them and to thank God for our Mothers and all those special people who are like Mothers to us. After the service, we are going to have an action-packed celebration where students take their Mums to various stations to be pampered and enjoy activities together; art, painting, dancing, yoga, sport, make up, nail painting, meditation, decorative arts. ‘Sometimes the smallest act of love can take up the biggest space in someone’s heart.’ Have a wonderful Mother’s Day. principal.silkwood@cns.catholic.edu.au www.stjohnssilkwood.qld.edu.au

DEALING WITH SIBLING RIVALRY STORY Meg O’Donnell, (B.Ed, SAHM to three sons who rarely get along) For most parents, their favourite time of day is that rare moment when their children are getting along. Nothing is more adorable than witnessing the love between siblings, especially when you know that any moment it can and most likely will end. Sibling rivalry; a tale as old as time. Everyone has either experienced it firsthand as a child themselves, dealt with their own children’s rivalry, or witnessed it on the street (usually with an exhausted parent following along). But where does this rivalry come from, and what can we do about it?
Being labelled “the smart one” by my siblings over the years, without realising it, had locked me into certain expectations. It also created rifts from my younger siblings who sometimes felt they fell short because they weren’t as “smart”. The same goes for “the wild child” or “the athletic one”. By focusing on only one attribute, we are boxing them in and not allowing them to develop on their own personality naturally without competition.
To try to understand (and hopefully limit) sibling rivalry, we need to try to see the situation from the child’s point of view. For you, bringing a sibling into the family home is the natural progression; creating your family. For your child, it can be confusing and stressful. Parents are, for the most part, a young child’s entire world, and now they need to share the attention, the time, and the love of the most important things in their lives; you. While we can’t stop the siblings fighting entirely, there are some tools we can remember to try to limit the aggression.
Sometimes the hardest thing is to do nothing, but by allowing our children to work through their arguments themselves, we are giving them the chance to learn lifelong skills in conflict resolution, without giving them attention. Of course, this isn’t something we can always do, and so when things escalate beyond words, it may be time to step in. Listening to each child’s point of view, while encouraging them to explain their feelings can help promote awareness of others, and you are there merely to help them decide on a workable resolution.
1. Share the Attention
4. Consequences for All
One of the top reasons children argue and fight is for attention. To a child who craves attention, if they aren’t getting positive attention, they will move on to craving negative attention; anything that gets you to spend time with them. Trying to arrange a small amount of time each day alone with each child teaches them that they are valued and important, and they don’t need to try so hard to be seen.
At the end of the day, if they still can’t agree, it is time for consequences for all. For instance, “If you can’t decide on a way to play together without fighting, we will have to put the Lego away and no one gets to use it.” By not taking a side, and removing a privilege from all parties, no one is getting the attention, and no one “wins”. This final strategy can sometimes end in the parent being “the bad guy”, but that isn’t always the worst thing in the world. If all else fails, the sibling rivalry will cease for a while, because they will be bonding over how “unfair” their parent is. And who doesn’t love sibling bonding?

Enrolling in School: When and How Choosing a school for your little one is one of the biggest decisions you will make for them. A quality education will make a world of difference in a child’s life, and they carry these skills with them into adulthood and their career of choice. Every parent wants their child to experience a quality education in a friendly learning environment, but with so many schools in the region, the choice can be a difficult one to make. Many schools have an Open Day to show prospective parents all the things their school can offer in terms of classes, facilities and teachers. Upon finding a school that catches your attention, the next step is enrolling. Most schools accept enrolment enquiries and applications throughout the year, while some have a specific times they accept enrolment applications. After submitting all documentation, an interview with the Principal is typically arranged. For most schools, enrolments for the following year are usually finalised by November. At some schools, applications for Prep enrolments are accepted up to two years prior to starting. In Cairns, families have the option of choosing public state schools, Catholic schools and independent private schools. But what’s the difference? The Difference Between Enrolling In Public vs Private Schools •• Choice – one big factor when it comes to enrolling in school is catchment areas. For public schools, your child is guaranteed a spot at a school in their catchment (which is usually the closest one to home), and whilst you can still apply for a state school out of your catchment, your child is much less likely to get a spot. With private schools, however, your location does not factor in to the enrolment process; if you like a school, you can apply •• Cost – there is no cost to enrol in a state school, whilst many private schools charge an application fee for enrolments.
Mythbusting In Cairns and the wider area, there are 29 Catholic schools and 7 Independent schools. One of the biggest misconceptions about Catholic and Independent schools is that a child must be either Catholic or Christian, but that’s not the case at all. Anyone can apply to enrol at a Catholic or Independent school, regardless of faith. Secondly, while school fees at private schools are typically higher than public schools, many parents are surprised by how affordable this is. Public schools have lower fees because they are government funded, but regardless of funding, schools everywhere try to keep their fees as low as possible, and affordable to everyone regardless of financial situation. Is Your Child Ready for School? Students starting Prep must turn five before 30 June in their year of commencement. Since 2017, it is now compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep. The Queensland Government have created a “Prep Ready Reckoner” to help you better understand when your child should start school, so search “Prep Ready Reckoner” online for more information. Expert Advice
THE PAKMAG EXPERTS KELLY WEALTH Dear Kelly Wealth, how can I save money on my mortgage? 1. Confirm your home loan interest rate - Statistics indicate that almost 1 in 4 people don’t know what their home loan rate is. So, refresh your knowledge and confirm your current rate, associated fees and repayment frequency. 2. Keep your repayments the same - If you are able to secure a lower interest rate and if your cash flow can cope, maintain your repayments at the same previous amount. 3. Check your repayment frequency - Making repayments on a weekly or fortnightly basis can also have a positive effect on the interest charged as it is calculated daily; the more frequent, the more you could save. Some also find a fortnightly payment structure to match the payment of their wages, much easier to manage. No-one likes to have ‘more month, than money’! 4. Increase your payments as your wage increases - Most of us increase our spending on ‘leisure items’, in line with our salary increases. But with a change in mindset, you could make a significant impact on your home loan. The main thing is… Don’t let apathy get the better of you. Don’t have a ‘set and forget’ attitude with your home loan. Seek help from your financial adviser, mortgage broker or your banker and take action now!

Dear Dr Bobby, what are the implications of my child sucking their thumb?
Dear Nardine, what do you think about DIY divorces?
Sucking is a completely natural behaviour for children, as babies are born with a reflex to suck any object placed in their mouth. In their first few months, this helps them establish feeding, but thumb sucking is seen more as a self-soothing behaviour. While the issue often resolves itself, this isn’t always the case. If thumb sucking continues past the age of four, this can cause implications such as protrusive upper front teeth, tipped back lower front teeth, an open bite where the upper and lower front teeth do not meet or a crossbite where the formation of the upper jaw is too narrow. For these issues, orthodontic intervention is often required in the form of a thumb crib appliance or braces. However, you can help them stop this behaviour early before the habit starts to affect incoming adult teeth. Thumb sucking can be limited and eventually stopped by encouragement, rewards, gentle reminders and unpleasant-tasting nail paint available from pharmacies. Sometimes, it just requires some determination and persistence.
As with all things DIY, a DIY divorce has its own set of pros and cons. The most common risk with a DIY divorce is filling out the paperwork incorrectly as this can lead to problems such as the Court not accepting the application for filing and problems with service, to name some common ones. If the application isn’t correctly filled out or not served properly or within time, the application may not be able to proceed on the due date. So, it is important that you have a clear understanding of the divorce process, the rules and procedures before deciding to ‘do it yourself’. On the other hand, a big plus of a DIY divorce is the money you could save and the amount of control that you have over your case. The Family Court website has a very helpful kit which explains how to fill in the forms, and you can do it online. Ending a marriage can have life-changing legal and personal consequences, and it is imperative that you make sure the divorce is processed correctly. If you have any doubts about your divorce process, don’t hesitate to seek legal advice; it will save you many headaches in the long run.

Expert Advice
THE PAKMAG EXPERTS PROACTIVE PHYSIO Dear Annemarie, my child has special needs and requires physiotherapy. How can I make sure we have this service approved under the NDIS? To be eligible for the NDIS, a person needs to: •• Live in Australia and be a citizen or permanent resident. •• Be under 65 (this shouldn’t be a problem for most kids!). •• And either •• have an impairment or condition that is likely to be lifelong; or •• be under six years of age with a developmental delay which means they usually need more help than another child of the same age. The NDIA is the agency that looks after NDIS funding. Before you go to the NDIA, it’s important to make sure: 1. You provide all the information relevant to your child’s condition. 2. You are seeking funding for everything your child is going to need in the coming year to help you and them with their condition. In conjunction with your child’s health care professionals, set out your child’s goals for the coming 12 months. NDIS will only fund things that will help to meet these stated goals. Getting the right advice is paramount to getting the right funding. If you don’t set out the goals correctly for your child in your application for funding, things that may be needed will not be funded, because they don’t meet the plan you have submitted. Speak first with your child’s paediatrician or a GP who treats children, and seek help from a paediatric physiotherapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist before applying for funding. Read more on our blog on the PakMag online edition for more information about the NDIS.
TALK TIME SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY Dear Teagan, how will my child’s speech affect them later in life? Unfortunately, communication delays in childhood that aren’t addressed usually continue to affect the child as they grow and progress through school. Ongoing communication issues affect social relationships when they are not able to understand or be understood by their friends. Communication difficulties also then become noticeable in their learning to read and spell and their ability to comprehend longer texts throughout primary school. Children with underlying language delays struggle to ‘keep up’ in the classroom, even if they appear to speak and listen well. Ongoing embarrassment and struggles in the classroom can result in low selfesteem and school refusal. Ultimately, by the time your child has reached high school, they have now experienced many years of struggles and poor self-esteem, and the ‘gap’ between them and their peers continues to grow. The impacts of this can affect your child’s employment options, and most importantly, how they view themselves as they enter adulthood.
DR ELIZABETH JACKSON Dear Dr Liz, I am getting really nervous about the birth of my baby. What are the pros and cons of a C-Section? It is normal to be sometimes nervous about birth and important to talk to your midwife, GP or obstetrician about concerns you have in your pregnancy. Vaginal birth is often considered the preferred mode of delivery due to quicker recovery and less intervention compared with Caesarean section. There are some elements of vaginal birth which can cause concern for women, which include pain, injury to pelvic floor and the need for an emergency instrumental or Caesarean. For Caesars, concerns include a longer recovery, risk of surgery and implications for future birth. Reasons why women may elect for a Caesarean section include personal preference, baby position or previous birth outcome.

Celebrate
ROYAL WEDDING AFTERNOON With the royal wedding on the 19th of this month, why not host your own little celebration? We can all agree that having tea with your friends isn’t as common as it should be. While it may seem like a lot of effort to set up and host a celebration fit for a Queen (or prince or princess!), if you allocate some good time in the kitchen, it’ll all be a breeze. We’ve compiled some handy tips to help you host the perfect royal wedding afternoon.
Put a few hours aside in the kitchen to create finger food for your guests to enjoy. Finger sandwiches with various fillings (including authentic cucumber sandwiches), cookies in heart shapes and teacakes provide a satisfying snack and no one will go hungry. It’s a good idea to include some “kid-friendly” snacks for the youngest guests, such as sandwiches with ham or chicken, or cupcakes.
Slice the Cake
Now, what do you wear to a royal party? Light colours will fit well with the theme of the party. A lacy white dress with open-toed matching shoes and dangly silver earrings will create the perfect look.
A royal themed cake can be achieved simply with some whipped cream or icing and sliced fruit. Arrange blueberries or black grapes and sliced strawberries pieces to create a fruity Union Jack on top of your cake. This decoration is colourful, creative, and will surely catch the attention of your visitors. Alternatively, cakes can be decorated with white flowers and fake leaves to give that romantic feeling. No time to bake a cake? Let Cakes Annietime do the work for you – perfect cakes for any occasion! High Tea It isn’t a royal garden party without scones! They’re incredibly easy to make and taste delicious. Serve with hot tea of choice and you’ve got yourself a deliciously simple afternoon tea. Include optional ingredients on the side such as milk, sugar, and lemon for your guests to add to their tea if they wish. Alternatively, enjoy a glass of sparkling champagne or refreshing wine.
Fancy Outfits
If you have little ones coming along, finding an outfit won’t be difficult. A sandy-coloured linen vest and pants is a perfect match for a little prince, while a little princess would love a smocked dress in a calming tone of baby blue. Keep the Kids Busy Kids attending the party may not find too much entertainment in sitting with the adults. Provide some royal-themed toys for your littlest guests such as dolls of princes, princesses, kings, queens, and angels. Let their imagination run free and enjoy some quiet time to catch up with your friends and family over a hot cup of tea. Enjoying a relaxed afternoon royal-style doesn’t have to be difficult to organise, and it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with those closest to you.

Maree McCahon, a North Queenslander, loves assisting parents to get into cloth nappies through her business, The Nappy Bucket, which she took over about 18 months ago. Meeting Baby Milestones STORY M. Canny, Cairns Private Hospital. The development of new skills in a baby is called a milestone. Many new parents are anxious to know whether their baby is meeting the appropriate milestones. There is a lot of good information out there on the ages and stages that milestones are usually achieved, and it is important to track whether a baby is meeting all the right developmental milestones. Dr Sathya, a Cairns-based paediatrician, observes, “The achievement of milestones are the key indicators of babies acquiring the necessary skills to ensure they can go on to be healthy functional children and adults.” Most babies achieve milestones around a certain age. What is ‘normal’ is sometimes quite broad, and while some babies might reach some milestones early, they might reach others a little later on. Some babies do things like walking or crawling earlier than might be expected; the only real concern according to Dr Sathya is with those infants that are below the normal developmental range, “It is really at that point that parents should seek the advice of health professionals if they notice delays.” “Parents are the key to observing these milestones and reporting any delay”, says Dr Sathya. “As a parent, you
know your child best, and if there are warning signs, then it is good to talk to people. If parents notice any delays, they need to get the baby assessed by a health professional.” GPs are able to assess babies and refer on to a paediatrician if there are any concerns or red flags. There are a range of other health professionals that can assist any parents that have concerns. Maternal child health nurses at community health centres, allied health professionals such as occupational therapists, speech therapists and physiotherapists are other professionals who can assess development in children. There are, according to Dr Sathya, many underlying medical reasons for babies not reaching milestones on time. Health professionals working with babies may work together to address developmental concerns and can all play a different role in assisting parents with babies that have delays in meeting milestones. “The important thing is to remember there is a lot of help and support out there and for parents to talk to someone if they have concerns. Early intervention can make a huge difference.” Dr Sathya encourages any parents with concerns to talk to a health professional early, as those that get advice sooner are better placed to be able to help their infant.

Roseola Infantum – What is it? STORY Kalisha Fitsch We tend to know the symptoms of common illnesses like the common cold, the flu, and chicken pox. But there is another childhood illness that is very common among babies and young children, with 95 per cent of children having been infected with it before the age of two - Roseola Infantum, or Roseola. The most common symptom of this illness is fever, followed by a raised red rash, starting on the body and spreading to the arms and legs. Some children may also experience swollen glands or mild respiratory issues. Roseola is contagious, but it can only be spread before the fever occurs.
The Baby Unicorn Manifesto
Treating roseola is predominantly treating their fever; so, paracetamol, rest at home, and plenty of fluids. Once the fever has dissipated (even though they still have a rash) children generally feel better and return to their normal selves.
“What if children were told they are a gift from the moment they are born? That they can be and do absolutely anything they want. What if children were told daily how grateful we are for their existence? What could they create then? What would be possible then?”
The symptoms of roseola can be very similar to those of measles so it may leave you questioning which your child may be suffering from. There is one big difference between the two; with measles, children are generally still ill when their rash appears. Given the high percentage of children who contract roseola, prevention is difficult. It’s a viral infection, and like most infections of this nature it is spread through respiratory droplets, i.e., it can be spread through coughs, sneezes and talking. If you are concerned consult your GP.
STORY Dr Dain Heer, Co-author of The Baby Unicorn Manifesto.
Those are the questions posed by Dr Dain Heer, a world-renowned ‘energy transformation virtuoso’. Dr Heer believes that we should encourage our children from a young age to know that anything is possible and that they are only limited by their imagination. His belief that we carry unlimited potential at birth inspired his book, The Baby Unicorn Manifesto (co-authored by Katarina Wallentin), tells the tale about what would be possible if we all treated each other as we ‘should be treated’ instead of the way most of us ‘have been treated’. The Baby Unicorn Manifesto is about the magic and possibilities on our beautiful planet, where we are only limited by our imagination, so, dream baby unicorn, dream! Want a happier pregnancy? Know your midwife STORY M. Canny, Cairns Private Hospital There is so much choice when it comes to childbirth. At Cairns Private Hospital we have made it a lot easier for mums-to-be to have the very best of all worlds with our new Know Your Midwife program. This program offers mums-to-be the very best in midwifery care from pregnancy through to labour and postnatal care. Our Know Your Midwife (KYM) program is unique in that it offers women the benefit of having their chosen obstetrician and the support of midwives they know. Our Know Your Midwife program offers women access to midwifery continuity of care, labour and birth care, shared-care and postnatal care for up to six weeks after the birth of their child. The program also offers parenting education and support throughout pregnancy. Our hospital’s team of allied health professionals are also there to assist including physiotherapists and lactation consultants. There is also support for mums with comprehensive antenatal care. This program has been running for nearly 12 months at the Cairns Private Hospital and has been well received
by both new and existing mums. Studies have found that women who are cared for by the same midwife throughout their pregnancy are less likely to need intervention during labour and are less likely to report a traumatic birth. Midwifery Continuity of Care: "...being cared for by, and able to build trust and rapport with, the same Midwife during pregnancy, through labour and birth, and into the early weeks of mothering - has benefits for mothers, babies and society." - Australian College of Midwives, 2017. Our Know Your Midwife program offers the very best of care, both with the obstetrician of choice and midwives that mums-to-be, form meaningful and trusted relationships with. It helps reduce much of the stress and anxiety associated with childbirth and in the early days that follow. To find out more about our Know Your Midwife program speak to your obstetrician from as early as your first appointment or contact Cairns Private Hospital Women’s Health Unit.

Exploring Play
PRETEND PLAY STORY Sharon Coles, Occupational Therapist, Cairns Paediatrics. Pretend play is the highest level of play ability, often also referred to as imaginative play. It starts at around 18 months of age with simple actions such as putting a doll to bed. Pretend play increasingly becomes the dominant type of play and is particularly noticeable at about four years when parents may observe their children playing shops, doctors, trucks in the sandpit, dress ups, superheroes, police and mums and dads. Pretend play helps children to understand how other people think, develop language skills, story comprehension and logical, sequential thought. Starting school with these skills provides the building blocks for literacy and social competence. Children who are disruptive in play often lack the more complex skills required for pretend play. You can encourage imaginative play by joining in with your child. Let your child take the lead and copy their actions before adding your own ideas. Toys that encourage pretend play may include dolls or figurines, teddies, farm animals, old boxes, trucks, garages, kitchen set, blocks, doll’s house and doctor’s kits.

Non-surgical weight loss procedure in Cairns Part III In the last edition of this special series on obesity, we discussed the common and pervasive chronic diseases that are caused by obesity and the distressing associations such as the psychological, social and economic repercussions. How about the solutions to obesity? The Microbiota.
Complication rates are quoted at 1 per cent compared to surgery which is anywhere between 10 and 18 per cent (US studies). Patients typically leave the hospital the next morning and are back to normal activities in three days. Weight loss of 20-25 per cent has been reported in the literature which is approaching the results of invasive surgery.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG).
Almost all patients start gaining weight with time after bariatric surgery (recidivism). ESG is ideal for revision of previously failed bariatric operations such as laparoscopic bands (‘lap bands’) which are no longer working or are causing complications. Once the lap band is removed, ESG can be performed. ESG has also been performed on previous laparoscopic gastric sleeve patients who are overeating, stretching their stomachs and putting on weight again. It is also anticipated that primary ESG can be revised in the future with additional stitches to reduce the stomach volume again if it has been stretched by overeating. Conversion of primary ESG to traditional surgical weight loss operations are also possible if required.
This revolutionary new non-surgical weight loss procedure is performed with a camera through the mouth (endoscopy). The stomach is stitched up internally to result in a 75 per cent reduction in capacity.
ESG works best for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40, but its success has extended our indications to BMI 50. For more information on ESG, go to our website www.cairnsgastro.com.au or call 4041 2877.
There has been intense interest in the faecal microbiota or the natural bacteria that lives in our gut and its effect on all aspects of human physiology such as immunity, mental health, disease and of course, obesity. Faecal transplants have been used to treat bowel infections and diseases such as colitis. It was also noted that an obese donor can transmit obesity to a thin recipient through the transfer of faeces. This suggests the microbiota play an important role in regulating our weight and well being. Much research is going into this area including the treatment of obesity.

HEALTH Discovering the DISCOVERING THE TASTE of Taste OF Colours COLOURS
CLASSROOM bugs, Classroom BUGS, Part PART 3
Developing good healthy eating habits from an early age is an important part of raising children. Not only does this set them up with a lifelong relationship with healthy food and an understanding of the importance of healthy eating, it also ensures they get all the nutrition they need to grow up ‘big and strong’! And if you’re lucky, introducing vegetables and limiting junk foods early on will ensure a lack of resistance at the dinner table when your kids are presented with a healthy meal.
In the March and April editions, we discussed how the classroom is not only a breeding ground for fertile imaginations but also for school bugs. If parents can spot symptoms, they may be able to manage the illness and potentially stop them from spreading the bugs further. This month we look at number four and five on our top five list of common classroom bugs:
But it’s not always easy to teach our kids that broccoli is good for them when all they want is a biscuit! Well, help is at hand! Self-proclaimed ‘average mum’, Raquel Sheridan’s two passions collided when her skill with the written word and desire to instil healthy eating practices in children combined in the form of her new book, “Discovering the Taste of Colours”. “Discovering the Taste of Colours was written to promote healthy eating from a child’s perspective, with lots of fun, laughs and silliness!” Raquel says. “This book brings healthy eating to your table.” If you would like to win a copy of Discovering the Taste of Colours visit www.pakmag.com.au, or you can check out all that Raquel has to offer at www.raquelsheridan.com
STORY Dr Nicole Higgins
4. Gastro. Vomiting and diarrhoea are things that school children often bring home from school and share with their families. Most gastro settles within 24 hours, and the key is hydration - lots of water or oral rehydrating solution. Most gastro is caused by a virus and will settle on its own without treatment. The spread can be reduced by keeping your child at home and good hand hygiene. 5. Conjunctivitis (aka Pink Eye). Conjunctivitis is an infection that can be caused by a virus or bacteria or an eye irritation such as an allergy. Conjunctivitis is ‘eye snot’ and is quite contagious, so good hand hygiene is essential, especially after your child has touched their eye. Conjunctivitis doesn’t require treatment with antibiotics, it usually gets better on its own. The infected eyes can be kept clean by using clean cotton wool balls soaked in warm water; a new ball should be used with each wipe and disposed of into the bin immediately. With your child spending more time in group environments like school, they will be building their immunity. While they may get sick more often during this period, most of the time all that is required are fluids, rest and paracetamol. If you are concerned, your family GP is always there to help.

HOME HELPERS DIRECTORY Cairns A/C and Refrigeration As parents, clutter is all too familiar to us. Tidying up the house seems like a never-ending ordeal, and at the back of our minds, we wonder if there’s an easier way to go about this. Rest assured, we’ve collected some wonderful clutter-eliminating tips so you can spend less time tidying, and more time living! Repurpose the cupboards. While cupboards are designed specifically for storage, it’s all too easy to stack them to the top with miscellaneous items. This results in not being able to find items when you need them, and mess building up quickly. Shift your cupboards around a bit; try neatly storing toys that aren’t currently being played with or invest in some glass jars and labels for waste-free and easy-to-find snacks and ingredients in the kitchen. Wardrobe wonders. Organising clothes is a whole different story but making small changes in your wardrobe can make a huge difference in your day-to-day time management. Keeping all your work clothing in one area of the wardrobe will save you valuable minutes when getting ready in the morning or organising your clothes by colour will make it much easier to make a decision on what you’d like to wear that day. Baskets galore. You’d be surprised to know how versatile baskets can be in the home. They can be used to store anything from laundry to stuffed toys and can be efficiently placed on a shelf in the bedroom or into storage high up in your cupboard. Make sure you label the baskets though, so you remember what’s in them! Make your home clutter-free with these simple organisational changes, and you will be efficiently cleaning-up your home in half the time! Now doesn’t that sound like heaven?

If you’re pregnant and own a cat, you’ve probably heard this common myth a few times. So, before you consider rehoming your beloved cat, rest assured that exposure to cats won’t harm a developing foetus, but it is important to make some changes to how you handle their cat litter tray.
Most children born with toxoplasmosis won’t show any signs of infection at birth but will begin to show signs months to years later. Signs and symptoms can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, jaundice and rashes and bruises under the skin. They often have an unusually large or small head and can have brain and nervous system problems. They are also at high risk of retina damage which results in blindness.
So where has this myth come from? Cat faeces can spread toxoplasmosis, which in pregnancy, is a dangerous infection that can cause birth defects. What is toxoplasmosis? Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. In most cases, the effects of toxoplasmosis are mild, and it often goes undetected, but for pregnant women, toxoplasmosis is very risky, as the parasite from the faeces can infect the placenta and the unborn baby. The most common way humans become infected with the parasite is through direct contact with infected animal faeces. Cats are a common host as they pick up the parasite from eating infected rodents or birds. What are the symptoms of toxoplasmosis? Symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of the flu, e.g. fever, headaches, aches and pains, etc. and often infection shows no symptoms at all.

How to avoid toxoplasmosis. Infection can be prevented by practising good hygiene. In particular, pregnant women should do the following to reduce the risk of infection: •• Wash hands thoroughly before eating. •• Wear gloves while gardening. •• Avoid contact with cat faeces and their rear ends. •• Ideally, your partner should handle the emptying of your cat’s litter tray; however, if this is not possible, wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after emptying. •• Don’t scoop; it’s best to make sure that litter trays are thoroughly emptied, cleaned and filled with fresh litter daily.
