The Thing Is

The Thing Is... STORY Bree James Motherhood. It is by far the most challenging thing I have ever done and probably will ever do in my life. The nine months of morning sickness, the traumatic labour, the sleepless nights, the loneliness, the helplessness, the loss of identity, the loss of your body, the loss of your old life and often friendships. There is a lot of loss and it all seems to happen in the early years of motherhood. The thing is, motherhood is hard. It is challenging, and it can bring us to the brink of insanity and breaking point at times. I remember my mum saying many times “you kids are driving me insane” and now I know why. I don’t know what it’s like in your household, but this is what drives me insane at mine sometimes. •• No one ever wants to do the same thing. One person will want to go out, others want to stay home. So you end up just debating what you are going to do for the next three hours and end up doing nothing. •• No one ever wants to eat the same thing. You cook one meal and basically force everyone to eat it. One person is stoked as it’s their favorite meal, another person did love it but now hates it, and another will not be hungry and not want to touch it. Meal times can totally suck. •• No one ever made the mess, broke the thing, or knows where they put it. It’s always some ghost person called “Idunno” who lives in the house that did it (or one of the pets of course). Rinse and repeat, this is the daily life of a parent. Groundhog day at its finest. I often imagine what parenting would feel like if you were to nail it. You’d cook the perfect meal that everyone loved and craved every day for every meal.

respectful conversation. Everyone in the house would pull their weight, clean up after themselves, and look after their belongings. There would be no wasted energy managing everyone, mums would be relaxed and chilled. We wouldn’t be feeling like a computer with 100 tabs open with no more room on our hard-drive. Life would be amazing. Can you imagine it? Close your eyes and imagine motherhood like that. There would also be unicorns, rainbows and sparkles, money would rain from the sky and there would be world peace, no hunger or disease, and of course happiness and laughter for all. All jokes aside, motherhood is of course wonderful and despite its challenges, it’s one of the best things I have ever done in my life. It’s given my life purpose, it’s made my life about serving others instead of myself, it’s made my life more valuable, it’s made my time more valuable, and it’s made my relationships more precious (or nonexistent), and of course it’s brought more joy to my life. Motherhood certainly puts everything into perspective about what is important and what is not. Even though parenting is not all rainbows and unicorns all the time, the little arms around your body and the adoration and pure love you get from your kids makes it all worth it (even when it’s mixed with tantrums and sleepless nights). At the end of the day when they are sleeping peacefully in their bed, your heart swells, you breathe a sigh of relief the day is over, but then you often regret the day wasn’t what you had hoped. The stress of the day is forgiven, you kiss their foreheads with a vow to make tomorrow better. This my dears, is motherhood.

Your weekends and free time would be filled with laughter, good times, great people and loving, kind and

Mothers on a Mission As well as having the most rewarding job in the world with being a mummy, many mothers harness their passions in life to make a difference in their community, the country or even the globe! This month, we spoke to a few local mothers on a mission to make a difference.

Shelley Wild Shelley Wild is not only a wife and mother who wants the best for her family, she has a burning passion for helping people to constantly evolve in order to reach their full potential. “I have always been fascinated by how to solve challenges to make people’s lives better. As a result, learning and change in human systems have been my lifelong pursuit.” Shelley explained to PakMag. “In 2015, I founded the Human Learning Collective – a place and space for people, interested in being a better human, to learn how to humanise organisations, teams, families and classrooms.” Shelley added “We have established a learning community, events, immersive labs, café-like learning and adopted one of the world’s most

advanced social learning platforms to co-create snack-size learning that is accessible on your mobile device.” Shelley told PakMag her one wish for her mission. “I wish parents and teachers knew how much they curate tomorrow’s humanity. They are incubators of leadership and change, and their role is more important than anyone has realised or acted upon. How we parent and teach and what we say and do can have a substantial social impact.” “ The mission is something my family all believe in and love,” Shelley shared when asked how her family copes with her mission. “Our daughter does not think we ‘work’, she thinks that Mummy is going to help people be happy.” Shelley added one last piece of advice “Be the social impact you want to see ripple and humanise organisations, teams, families and classrooms.” “If you’d love to learn about people, to magnify our humanness and create a ripple of positive social impact on the world go to our website and express interest in joining the Human Learning Collective.” To find out more about Shelley’s mission, head on over to www.humanlearningcollective.com.au

Yolonde Entsch Like any mother, Yolonde Entsch wants her daughter to grow up with only the best opportunities in life. She strives closer to this everyday by empowering women to fight for equality in every aspect of life. When Yolonde was asked what her mission was, she said: "I work with ladies who make Moon Sick Care Bags to donate to the women of Papua New Guinea. Papuan women living in rural, remote and isolated villages do not have electricity, access to shops or sanitary products." "We’re very excited about the upcoming launch of a short film about the Moon Sick Care Bag Project and the Doomadgee ladies’ trip to Papua New Guinea to personally deliver the Bags. The short film was a fantastic initiative and will showcase what can be achieved with a little drive, determination and the right partnerships!"

Diana Hepworth Diana’s passion lies in helping children who are affected by the condition Neurofibromatosis (NF). Besides this, she has taken on the role of wife and mother to three children, one of whom has been diagnosed with NF themselves. When Diana was asked what her mission was, she told PakMag “To raise awareness about the genetic condition, Neurofibromatosis (NF), and to raise funds for the Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia (CTF).” Diana goes on explaining what sparked her mission. “My second born, Darcy, was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis just prior to his first birthday. I stumbled across the national fundraising event, Cupid’s Undie Run, while looking for teacher resources about his condition. I had the crazy idea of bringing this event to Cairns and in 2018 we held our debut Cairns Cupid’s Undie Run.” Diana’s one wish is to “Ultimately find a cure for Neurofibromatosis so that Darcy can live the life that I know he is destined to!”

Her one wish for her mission is “Is that every woman in the Pacific region who doesn’t have access to female hygiene products receive a Moon Sick Care Bag”. Yolonde’s family are nothing short of supportive. “I am blessed to have a very supportive and encouraging family who are all extremely proud of me, especially my husband and mum who are my biggest and loudest champions'. Yolonde also told us what you can do to help bring this mission to life. “Come and be a part of this powerful movement! We’re looking for volunteers who have skills they’d like to share and donations of fabric.” To find out more about Yolonde’s mission, head on over to www.yolonde.com

Whilst Diana rallies for a fantastic cause, it has its down sides. “It’s been tough on my family, my husband Mark in particular. It has overwhelmed him on top of work stresses to the point where he suffered a major break down. My kids tell me I spend far too much time on the computer and phone during the campaign period. So as much as I feel I am doing the right thing, I did not realise it would consume me so much.” One last message Diana would like to leave you with is “Here in FNQ, we do not have access to NF specialists. By getting Cairns involved, we hope to have better access to specialists and also for the CTF to consider setting up support groups and camps for those locals diagnosed with NF and their families.” "The month of May is NF Awareness Month. Please help us raise awareness and consider donating to the CTF. To find out more about Diana’s mission, head on over to www.cupidsundierun.com.au

The Slow Transition from Dependence to Independence STORY Jenna Galley “Me do it.” Three little words, most likely uttered by your feisty toddler. They may not seem like much. But they are the start of something very big and exciting. You see, these three innocent words mark your child’s first step in the journey from dependence to independence. There will be countless steps along the way. Steps that leave us parents frustrated, angry, proud, nostalgic and probably a little sad. After all, our babies are growing up, learning to do things on their own and, although this means we have a bit of ourselves back, it also means this momentous part of their childhood is over. Even if our children are able to do the basics for themselves, they will still depend on us for love, protection, guidance and support. In addition to this, it is also up to us to help them become independent adults by building their confidence, teaching them to think for themselves and promoting self-sufficiency. It’s a big ask, right? And no one parent is prepared for. But, with the right guidance we can successfully raise the next gen of independent little humans.

Get to Know the Independent Child Before we delve into how to make this transition from dependency to independence, let’s take a look at the end goal – what an independent child looks like. Psychologist and author of Positive Pushing: How to Raise a Successful and Happy Child, Jim Taylor is one of the leading experts in the matter of raising independent kids. He addresses a number of attributes of welladjusted children: •• Self motived to do their best without the need for a reward •• Great at problem solving •• Responsible and disciplined •• Committed to completing all tasks and exercises •• Competent and capable of taking care of themselves •• Cooperative, appreciative and gratuitous for others’ efforts Sounds like the perfect child, right? The holy grail we all strive for with our kids. And, I’ll be honest, it also sounds like a far cry from my children who live on bribery and rewards. But there’s hope yet, even for us.

Parents, Be Parents

Instil Family Roles and Responsibilities

According to Taylor, one way to help your child become more independent is to know your role in the family structure and to let your children play their role as well.

Every member of the family should have certain tasks that they must do. Make sure your kids are contributing to the household, even if it’s in simple ways like setting the table or taking out the rubbish. This teaches them teamwork, gives them responsibility and builds their confidence.

“If family members fulfil their own responsibilities and do not assume others', then children develop into independent people and everyone is happy,” Taylor explains. So what are our responsibilities as parents? I mean, other than chief snack provider, bed-maker and bump-in-sock remover. “Providing your children with the opportunity, means, and support to pursue their goals. (This) includes ensuring that your children have the materials needed, proper instruction, and transportation, among other logistical concerns,” Taylor explains. Our children also have a role to play. And not just to dump their shoes at the door and demand snacks. According to Taylor, “Our child's responsibilities involve doing what is necessary to maximise the opportunities that you give them.” Give them the tools needed to try, the opportunity to take on responsibilities and the guidance to give it a go (without taking over completely), and you are giving your kids all they need to learn how to be self-sufficient. Of course, this isn’t going to happen overnight. Furthermore, how independent your child is will depend on a number of factors, especially their age and stage. But there are a few ways we can encourage our kids, regardless of their age, to be more self-sufficient while still providing them with love, guidance and encouragement. Praise Their Efforts to Try New Things Many kids are so worried about failing that they are not willing to even try. Rather than focusing on winning or being perfect, praise them for trying. When you do, they will be more willing to take on new tasks in the future, something that they will have to do often later in life. After all, life is all about taking risks and stepping out of our comfort zones.

14 May 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au

Slow Down As painful as it is to watch your child attempt to put on her shoes (and take 15 minutes to do so), it’s important we give them this chance to try. Sure, we could get the task done in 30 seconds but doing things for your child that she is capable of doing herself can send a message that you don’t have confidence in her abilities. Plan for things to take a little longer and avoid the desire to micro-manage or take over completely. Promote Problem Solving It is our responsibility to ensure nothing bad happens to our kids, but often this means we jump in and fix everything without giving our kids a chance to think for themselves. Give your child the chance to come up with solutions rather than providing all the answers. This can be very empowering for kids – to know they are capable of working out problems on their own, without having to rely on an adult for help. Let Them Screw Up Sometimes we have to let our kids make mistakes and learn from them rather than jumping in. Yes, we want our kids to know they can depend on us for anything, but we also want them to know they need to take responsibility. Let Them Choose Every day children have hundreds of choices to make. This will continue well into adulthood. Let them make some of these choices for themselves. This helps them take ownership of their decisions. Teach, Teach, Teach Our children learn through watching you. So use every opportunity to teach them your tricks, whether folding laundry, brewing coffee, cooking dinner, feeding the pets or making beds. If you teach them, they will try. And eventually, they will get it right.

"Believing in a child until they believe in themselves gives me a sense of purpose that I never thought I’d have. Teaching something 101 different ways until it clicks? Challenge accepted!

"I entered teaching 26 years ago in the hope that I could change the trajectory of just one person’s life. I have many fond memories from my teaching years so far, but my funniest is feeling like a mother duck as all my little pre-schoolers used to follow behind me.

Digital Technology is my favourite subject to teach. Many students think we just play games and fly drones. Well, they’re right – to an extent. One of the reasons I love digital technology is because it’s grounded in the philosophy of "see a need, fill a need" (Bigweld, Robots, 2005), if something can work better then find a way to fix it. Digital solutions are all around us."

My favourite subject to teach is Religious Education. I like that it opens us up to possibilities that can’t always be explained by science, so it requires a leap of faith. I like that my students sometimes struggle trying to understand that which cannot be understood, and to know that it is okay to not understand."

“I have been teaching for 25 years. I became a teacher because I love working with children and helping them to become the best versions of themselves possible.

“I am currently in my seventh year of teaching. I was previously a chef, so my passion for hospitality, food and nutrition led me to the decision to go into education. I chose high school over teaching at TAFE because I thought I could really make an impact in this group of learners.

My favourite subject to teach is English, as reading and writing are so important for students to master when they are young. As for my favourite memory, I can’t pick one as there are so many happy and joyful moments. A song I love to sing with my students is Greatest Gifts. It’s a song that reminds us how lucky we are to live in a beautiful world.”

Nowadays I teach Hospitality and Food Technology and I love it. Funnily enough, when I was a student myself, I disliked everything about school apart from sport, Home Economics and friends. However, I think this has really enabled me to develop lessons to cater for students who are not necessarily academically minded.”

If I can help prepare students to be influencers in their world, I will have helped in changing the world.

“I became a teacher nine years ago because I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young people.

My teaching areas are English and IT and these are my favourite subjects. I love teaching people to understand the message that’s actually being told. Likewise, I love the innovative and creative ways students use IT and the ways they can begin to shape the future in understanding how it all works.”

The best thing about working with kindergarten children is that every day is filled with funny moments! I couldn’t pick just one, but I know that every day the children make me laugh.

Music Matters - Why your Child Should Learn a Musical Instrument STORY Nicole Tobin, Kindermusik with Nicole Children love music. The upbeat tempo, the smoothsounding instruments, the easy-to-follow lyrics – to a child, there’s nothing better!

musicians), in the parts of the brain that control cognitive performance, motor skills, hearing, storing audio information and memory.

Most children will happily sing-along to nursery rhymes featured on Little Baby Bum and The Wiggles, bop along to music they hear in the car or at the shops, mimic music videos from their favourite artists and later down the track, may even want to learn how to play piano/ guitar/saxophone/drums.

Thus, musicians are more self-disciplined, more attentive and better at planning, which are all very important skills for academic performance. This also enhances the ability to learn foreign languages as it involves listening for different tonalities.

If your little one is displaying a love of music, this is awesome news for both you and your child! And it’s something that you should continue to encourage. Sound Effects You may have heard the old adage, “learning an instrument makes you smarter.” As it turns out, this is actually the truth! According to researchers at the University of Zurich, learning a musical instrument changes the brain’s structure and functionality (compared with non-

Simply listening to music stimulates most parts of the brain, but reading and playing music simultaneously exercises every part of the brain. It appears learning to read music is critical, as it aids in recognising patterns, which is then crucial in the development of mathematical and literacy skills. Instrumental Learning As a music teacher, I am often asked, “When should I start my child on an instrument?”. The answer will depend entirely on you and your child. But before you decide, ask yourself, do you have the

time to sit with your child for 15 to 20 minutes a day, at least five times a week to help them practice for the next two years? It sounds like a big commitment, right? Which is why it might be best to wait until they are about seven or eight years old and can read both the English language and the music homework book. But what if your child is showing a love of music at an earlier age? There are plenty of music and movement classes that teach your child the basics of music, music history, simple percussion, wind and string instruments and music reading before this age if your child wants to learn an instrument. Tips for Choosing an Instrument •• Instruments like piano, keyboard and violin are easiest for your child to be successful with at an earliest age. •• When your child is a little older, instruments like a recorder (which, contrary to popular belief, if played correctly is a delightful introductory wind instrument), cello (which is larger and your child has to sit down to play, so may need assistance setting it up) and guitar. •• When your child has sufficient lung capacity, usually by the age of nine, clarinet, flute and trumpet are ideal wind instruments. Nurturing their Passion for Playing

•• Ensure you have a quality instrument – A non-touch sensitive keyboard, for example, may sound ideal, but is setting your child up to have incorrect technique which may cause injury in the long term. If you don’t have the room for a piano, touch-sensitive 76 or 88 key keyboards with full sized keys and a pedal are now available for very reasonable prices. •• Make it part of the daily routine – It’s compulsory to do nightly reading at school, so you need to make music practice part of the daily routine as well, and schedule a time for it. •• Be involved – Even if you can’t read a note, you can still sit with them, listen to them and praise them. Children need to know that they are valued, and that you want them to succeed in this endeavour. •• Limit distractions during practice times - If the rest of the family is playing on the Playstation and you have told your child to practice, of course they are going to not want to. •• Work with your child’s school – Many schools will have music programs as part of the curriculum. If your child is showing an interest in music or in a certain instrument, have a chat to the music teacher. He or she may be able to help you find an instructor or know of musical organisations in the community that might interest your child. •• Find a Teacher - If your child does want to take on a musical instrument, check out www.qmta.org.au for teachers in your area.

Handing your child an instrument is only the first step in nurturing this musical passion. Some children will eagerly practice without prompting for hours and hours. Most however, will need a little encouragement. In fact, every single child no matter how motivated, is going to have periods where he or she doesn’t want to practice.

Music is For Life

What this means is, as the parent, you will have to nag. But hopefully not too often. Here are a few tips to help pave the pathway to practice success.

You never know - they may still be playing when they’re 90. Just ensure you encourage them to practice now so they have this skill for life!

•• Make music front and centre - Set up the instrument where it is part of the family space, not tucked away in a bedroom where they are by themselves and can’t share their experience with the family.

Nicole Tobin is a classroom music teacher, a piano, keyboard and flute teacher, and a Kindermusik Educator. Raised on the Atherton Tablelands, she has been teaching in Cairns since 1995.

22 May 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au

Give your child the opportunity to play an instrument and you won’t regret it. After all, the love of music never grows old. There are always community bands or orchestras they can join once they have finished school or they may simply choose to keep this special skill for family events and occasions.

THE PAKMAG EXPERTS ALAN REN Cairns Cars Home of Audi and Haval Dear Alan, what features should we look for in a family car? We can all agree that our children’s safety is a top priority. You should be on the lookout for a car with a 5-star ANCAP rating, airbags and of course ISOFIX anchor points for car seats when choosing a family car. As parents, it’s likely you’ll be carrying around half the house when you leave home. Whether it’s a pram or sports gear, sufficient storage space is must. Look for a car with great boot space. If you’ve ever gone on a long drive with your kids, you’ll know how restless they get. Built-in entertainment is super handy for keeping the little ones entertained. And lastly technology. There is so much great tech going into cars now. Whether that be airconditioned seats, keyless entry, automatic boot, tyre pressure alerts, emergency braking, lane assist for example- look for a car that has great tech. If you are looking for a great car, please come in and see us before you buy anywhere else. 4046 6333 www.cairnsauto.com.au

DR RICHARD THOMAS Cairns Vet Clinic Dear Dr Richard Thomas, what are common hazards for cats? We’ve all heard the saying curiosity killed the cat and whether they reside indoors or outdoors, cats love to explore and play. Luckily, cats are pickier than dogs about what they eat but that doesn’t mean they won’t eat something dangerous. The most common cause of death in cats, especially in the tropics, are paralysis ticks. Regular tick control is absolutely essential. So, what are the 5 most common hazards for cats? See my full reply at www.pakmag.com.au for more details. If you suspect that your cat has eaten something they shouldn’t or been exposed to something dangerous, contact us immediately. 4032 9999 www.cairnsvet.com.au

DR BOBBY Griffin GRIFFIN Dr NARDINE COLLIER

Sunbird Orthodontics

Collier Lawyers

Dear Dr Bobby, I don’t think I can afford braces for my son. Do I have to pay the whole lot upfront?

Dear Nardine, are there any apps to help parents communicate better after seperation? Sometimes, it is hard to communicate with your former partner about arrangements for your children. Our Family Wizard is an app designed to assist parents to deal with each other easily in writing. It allows parents to keep track of events, expenses, and so on. Another interesting addition is the ‘Tonemeter’ - Similar to a spell or grammar check, it warns users when their messages appear to be aggressive or unfriendly.

Orthodontic practices are really unique in the health profession in that most offer a service where the cost of orthodontic treatment can be spread out. Meaning you don’t need to pay the whole lot up front. You won’t find many Doctors or Dentists doing that! At Sunbird Orthodontics, we offer interest-free payment options through Dentacare, which allows flexible payment plans of up to 2 years in duration without the need for credit checks.

If you Google “communication apps for parents”, you will see all the popular apps listed and you can decide which is right for you.

If you are worried about the cost of your child’s treatment, speak to our friendly staff who will help explain all the options available to help you spread the cost of treatment. You don’t need a referral and your first visit is free if you mention PakMag.

HEALTH 5 Amazing AMAZING FACTS about Facts ABOUT the THE FEMALE Body Female BODY

Raising Awareness: RAISING AWARENESS: Polycystic POLYCYSTIC Ov OVarian ARIAN Syndrome SYNDROME

Small but powerful. During a contraction, the uterus gives a force that equates to roughly 1938kg of pressure. Phew!

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal condition affecting up to 1 in 5 girls and women. As the name suggest, it causes cysts to form on the ovaries and is one of the leading causes of infertility.

Women’s ears are a lot more sensitive to sound, especially when sleeping. It’s an evolutionary trait so if baby is crying, mum is sure to wake up immediately.

PCOS is caused by high levels of androgens in the body, also called ‘male’ hormones, with the main being testosterone. All women produce small amounts of androgens, but women with PCOS produce levels that are too high and this can prevent ovulation and affect the menstrual cycle. Symptoms of PCOS include excess hair growing on the face, chest, and stomach; irregular periods or no periods at all; acne, easy weight gain and difficulty falling pregnant or not falling pregnant at all. Women with PCOS have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnoea and are more likely to have high cholesterol. Although the condition is very common, up to 70 per cent of women remain undiagnosed – there’s a range of symptoms and you don’t have to have all of them to be diagnosed with the condition. There is no cure for PCOS, but regular exercise, a healthy approach to diet and some medications may help improve symptoms and the chances of becoming pregnant.

Ultra-elastic uterus – A healthy uterus is about the size of an orange. During pregnancy, it expands quickly and eventually reaches the size of a watermelon when mum reaches full term, extending from the pelvic area to the bottom of the rib cage. Women live longer than men. In fact, two to five years longer on average. Women generally have a higher pain tolerance. Women can tolerate pain for a much longer time, which may be due to pregnancy and childbirth.

Oregano OREGANO Oil OIL for FOR Warts WARTS Oregano oil can be used to treat warts. Calanna Wholehealth Pharmacies stock the 'Solutions 4 Health, Oil of Wild Oregano'. HEALTH Health HEALTH Benefits BENEFITS of OF Chia CHIA Seeds SEEDS

Natural NATURAL Remedies REMEDIES for FOR Warts WARTS

Despite their tiny size, chia seeds are packed with nutrients and considered one of the healthiest foods on the planet.

Warts are harmless skin growths that may appear anywhere on the body, but for children they are most commonly found on the hands and feet. They can be unsightly and may even be painful as you put pressure on them while walking.

Chia seeds are a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, iron, and calcium. A 28-gram serving of chia seeds contains 5.6 grams of protein. They’re also loaded with antioxidants which fight the production of free radicals which could otherwise lead to diseases like cancer. Chia seeds may lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and the high fiber and protein content in the seeds may even help you lose weight. As if the list isn’t long enough, they’re also high in omega-3 fatty acids – containing more than salmon, gram for gram.

While many disappear on their own after time, they can bleed when knocked or some simply won’t go away on their own.

These tiny wonderful seeds also have very few calories and are super easy to add to your diet. Incorporate them into smoothies, salads, oatmeal or muffins. You can even easily make chia pudding by adding one and a half cups of non-dairy milk to one third a cup of chia seeds and sweetening it up with honey, maple syrup or agave syrup for a healthy, protein-filled treat. The seeds absorb up to ten times their weight in water, creating that pudding texture. Delicious and nutritious!

Orange peel – Rub the wart with an orange peel daily for two weeks. This will cause the wart to turn orange and darken before finally dropping off. Duct tape – Place a square of duct tape over the wart and leave it in place, removing only when replacing with new duct tape. You should start to see results after about two weeks. Baking powder – Mixing baking powder into a paste and applying it to the wart can help it fall off. Cover it with a bandage and repeat daily.

Bump, Bub and Beyond

How childbirth affects your relationship STORY Blair King Having a child is one of life’s greatest moments. When you’ve found a partner who you adore and you’re both ready and eager to turn that love into a tiny heartbeat, life couldn’t be better, right? And just like that, two suddenly become three; but once all of the newborn excitement starts to mellow, there is often a shift in our relationship with our significant other. How can we cope when our relationship takes a hit? Lacking a Good Night’s Rest The biggest shift in your household after childbirth will be the amount of sleep you and your partner are getting. We all know how much a good night’s sleep can affect our mental state, so with the lack thereof for a new mother and father, it’s understandable if you become crabby easily. Although the only real remedy for sleep deprivation is, well, sleep, keeping mindful that your partner is going through it at the moment just as you are, can ensure that the peace is kept. Even though one of you is likely to be getting more sleep than the other, try and be as empathetic as possible. And of course, encourage each other to take naps when you can. Social Life Shortage Before having a child, our social lives are booming. We go for drinks with friends, out to dinners after a day in the office and take little weekend getaways spontaneously. This young and carefree lifestyle takes a big slap in the face when we become parents. But it’s not all downhill. These aspects of your life will come back, although maybe not as spontaneously and on a whim as before.

The loss of your social life when becoming a parent can take a toll on your relationship. Your partner may become agitated at the fact that you aren’t the adventurous, outgoing couple that you were previously and relationship dynamics can shift. “Well, What Did You DO All Day?” Whether you are working a 9-5 to support your new family or staying home to look after your little one, both roles have their challenges. It’s easy to assume you’ve bagged the hard end of the bargain when your partner is home all day to look after a newborn, and vice versa when your other half doesn’t run to help you with the cooking as soon as they arrive home from work, but communication is key. Understanding that one role can be just as difficult as another, and expressing challenges you face day to day can dodge negativity and diminish assumptions that being a stay at home parent is a walk in the park. Shifting Affection When you bring a baby into the world, everything revolves around them. It is easy to pour yourself into being the best parent you can be, but your shift in direction of affection can often be at your partner's expense. Mental and physical attraction can decline after childbirth but you’ll find other ways to be intimate with your partner. Postnatal Depression can affect both males and females, so it is vital to communicate with your significant other and seek professional help when needed. Although parenthood is a fresh and sometimes scary experience, it is an amazing experience worth every minute.

INFANTILE COLIC Babies who cry and fuss a lot are often described as being “colicky,” but what exactly is colic, and what causes it? Colic is defined as crying and fussing inconsolably that happens often and may last for hours. It’s very common and affects roughly one in five infants. If your baby cries excessively, it could be a sign of colic.

NAPPY BAG ESSENTIALS Despite the obvious (nappies, wipes, and disposal bags), there are some essentials you should definitely have in your nappy bag. A change of adult clothing. Accidents happen when you least expect them to, and the last thing you want is to walk around with a poop stain on your shirt. Hand sanitiser. There may be no washing facilities available where you’re going. Hats. One for you and one for bub - It’s important to stay sun safe out there! One or two toys. In an attempt to keep them distracted during changing time. A portable changing pad. Baby changing pads help keep your little one comfortable and means that you always have a clean surface to lay bub on. Snacks and water. Pack some baby food pouches, fruit and water (in a bottle for you and a sippy cup for bub).

What causes colic? The cause of colic is unknown, but there are various theories including indigestion, trapped wind or gut sensitivities – but there is little evidence to support these theories. What should I do if I suspect my baby may have colic? Firstly, if your little one is crying excessively, take them to a doctor to rule out any medical conditions, such as eczema and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. However, babies with colic usually don’t have an underlying medical condition. How can I comfort my baby? Every baby is different and while a certain settling technique may work like a dream for some, it may do nothing for others. Try a few different things, such as holding your baby, wrapping them snugly in a sling, talking gently to them, gentle massages and avoid overstimulating them. Contact your doctor immediately if your little one has a weak, high-pitched continuous cry, vomits green fluid, has breathing problems, has a fever of 38°C or higher or passes blood in their stools. If you have any doubts or worries, don’t hesitate to see your GP.

DID YOU KNOW? Pregnant women often have a heightened sense of smell, and certain scents can be overwhelming. The reason for this is to help them steer clear of foods they shouldn’t eat while pregnant. This is caused by the same hormones that cause a mumto-be to have morning sickness.

PARENT'S RETREAT With Megan from Freedom Cairns A calm mind is the ultimate weapon against your challenges. At the end of a long day, it’s nice to retreat to your own little oasis to unwind, take a deep breath and relax for a bit. For many parents, the main bedroom in the house has become more of a retreat, and so it should be.

If you’ve got a walk-in wardrobe, modify it with practical and easy-to-use storage solutions so you don’t have to spend ages looking for the perfect outfit. If you’ve got a balcony, utilise this space with comfortable seats, lively plants and wind chimes and you’ve got a gorgeous relaxing space to sit with your partner and reflect on your day together.

There are a few steps you can take to turn your regular bedroom into a parent’s retreat.

Comfort is key

Smart space Your retreat doesn’t need to be huge for it to be perfect, as long as you use the space you have in an efficient manner. Give that spacious feel to your room even if it’s small by avoiding clutter. It can be tempting to fill each corner of the house with all sorts of trinkets, but sometimes, less is more.

1

A parent’s retreat should bring about feelings of serenity, relaxation and gratitude for that muchdeserved ‘me time’. One way to really up the comfortfactor is to make the space as cosy as possible. Invest in a soft new doona, a fluffy rug and perhaps even an arm chair by the window for quiet reading.

Freedom's Tip: Set up a chaise lounge in the bedroom for curling up and reading. Include soft furnishings such as throws, mood lighting and calming artwork for peace and quiet. A place to escape with that good book or the new series on Netflix.

Another great idea is setting up your picnic close to a playground or swimming hole so the kids can have a bit of fun in between nibbles, and you’ve got a comfortable spot to supervise from. Keep it convenient All this talk about delicious food and beautiful locations is great, but you need to transport all your food and equipment from A to B without your picnic turning into a recipe for disaster. Investing in a handy cooler bag, a thick picnic blanket and a set of kid-friendly plates and cutlery will turn your day from good to great. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water bottles, napkins, trash bags and wet wipes.

Having fun anD and learning: It's Child’s Play

Is play important for children? Yes, play is the way that children learn about themselves, others and the world around them. Children with additional needs or disabilities rely on their play partners to change how they play to involve them more. Sitting on the floor for children with physical challenges or sharing an area of interest for children with Autism can be the starting point to sharing a playful interaction together. Will play look different for my child? Yes, the age of the child and any additional needs may impact on what play looks like. Some may enjoy music and movement with others, reaching and dropping noisy containers and toys, crawling and rolling to reach objects of interest, and watching other people’s faces as they sing or talk to them. Some may enjoy more physical play ideas such as dancing, jumping, kicking, climbing or crawling through tunnels. Some may enjoy play involving building up their hands such as playdough, puzzles, drawing, construction, music making on pots and pans as well as interacting with other’s playing catch or throwing a Frisbee.

Some may enjoy playful activities including construction, arts and craft, pretend or simple cooking tasks, superheros and character play, accessing playgrounds and participating in games with agreed rules such as sports or tiggy. More information available at www.raisingchildren.net.au Do I need lots of toys? No, play is not dependent on what you have more so what you do. It can be as simple as sharing books from the library, using clothes from an older sibling’s cupboard for dress up play, using child-friendly kitchen items for pretend cooking, banging on boxes or shaking homemade noisy toys to their favourite songs or enjoying rolling or throwing a tennis ball or balloon. Check out this website for some ideas of play items you can make: www.happyhooligans.ca/70-awesome-toys-make-kids If you are concerned about your child’s capacity, contact your local ECEI Team. CHOOSING A Childcare OR Kindy Finding a quality child care centre or kindergarten that suits you and your family’s needs can be easier said than done. Sometimes you need to leave your child in someone else’s care due to work, study, or other commitments. As well as providing care and supervision, attending child care or kindy helps children develop social, emotional, and learning skills by exploring the world and playing with other kids. This helps make the transition into school less bumpy once that day comes. When choosing a childcare or kindergarten, there’s a lot to consider; what hours and days do you need? What location is most convenient? What is the philosophy of the centre? Do you like the programs they offer? It’s a big decision to be made, and understandably, it can seem a bit daunting. Living in Cairns, we are so lucky to have such a wonderful selection of child care centres and kindergarten options available to us. Attending a child care centre or kindergarten helps children to develop social, emotional, and learning skills by exploring the world and playing with other kids. Whether you are looking for a great child care centre or your child is approaching the age to commence kindergarten, this guide will help you find the centre that is perfect for you (Please bear in mind that many centres encourage early enrolment as spots do fill quickly and many have long waiting lists, so checking these centres and kindergartens out now for future planning is also a great idea).
