Hello and welcome to the June edition of PakMag. Wow, I can’t believe this month we are celebrating 12 years of PakMag and that we are already halfway through the year! Time sure goes faster and faster the older we get. It only feels like yesterday I was finishing school, now I am hiring girls half my age. It’s mortifying! Especially when I am getting work experience students in the office who remember coming to my kids show when they were really little. So this month, I feel old. Really old! I simply cannot believe that just over a third of my life has been dedicated to making PakMag what it is today. I do blame it for all the smile lines I have though, and of course a few stress lines too. It’s certainly been a rollercoaster ride, but I keep holding on for dear life hoping that there are more ups than downs, and that I keep bringing joy to families that come along for the ride. A huge heartfelt thank-you for those that support PakMag - it means more than I can express in words. And to those that keep watching me on this rollercoaster, thank you, I know it’s hard for you sometimes and you think I am crazy - but thanks to those that tell me to keep riding. I truly hope you enjoy this edition, and of course, don’t forget to tell everyone you read it in PakMag.

The Thing Is

The Thing Is... STORY Bree James It’s been 12 years since I started PakMag. I started it with one desire: To help parents. I wanted to bring more joy to family life by informing parents of all the great things happening around town. If I could entertain and educate you too - then that was a bonus. When I started PakMag, I had never worked in the print industry. I did not have a degree, I hadn’t written a story since school and I never had an inclination to be a writer (in fact I was a C grade student, especially in English). I had no idea of what I was doing when I started PakMag and I’d still suggest that this is the case! To top it off, I started a parenting magazine and didn’t have kids… I was however studying to be a school teacher at James Cook University, and I was also a childrens' entertainer. But at 26 years of age, I had very strong desire to do my part to make the world a better place and went all in despite not knowing what I was signing up for. The thing is, being a business owner is not glamorous. I think it’s funny when people think I am successful. Sure, I have succeeded in surviving for 12 years in this business (and twenty years with my entertainment business), but success is like pregnancy. Everyone congratulates you but no one knows how many times you were screwed to get there. It’s certainly been an interesting journey and I am not the same person I was when I started out. Here are ten things I have learnt about raising a business and a family. 1. You are going to be burnt more times than an English tourist in the outback. 2. You are going to feel a whole lot of guilt. Guilty when you work on your business, and guilty when you are at home with sick kids. Guilty for taking a break, and guilty for working too hard. Guilt, guilt, guilt.

4. People will let you down. You will be shocked more times than a kid playing with a knife in a toaster, and it will hurt just as much. 5. People will think you are mysterious or aloof. Because you have been burnt more times than an English tourist you don’t let many people into your private world. 6. You will downplay your achievements. Because no one likes a showoff. 7. You will have so many sleepless nights and moments of despair because you simply just can’t do it all. A business is as needy as a newborn with colic. 8. You will be busier than a mosquito in a nudist colony. There will always be so much to do, so much opportunity, but only so much you can bite into at one time. 9. You will have times where you feel very alone, and so isolated because of the repetitive nature of points 1-8. 10. Just when you think you can’t take anymore, something positive will happen like a client or follower will send you a positive note and you will pull up your big girl panties and go for another round with "Mike Tyson" - for your family, your team, and your followers. Quitting on your dream is harder than quitting eating chocolate for life. PakMag was my first baby. It’s nearly a teenager now, and I am really proud of what it’s become. I hope the teenage years are filled with us making more of a difference, and that we grow into the vision I hope for it. It’s certainly not been easy, but as they say “Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

3. You are going to feel like you aren’t doing your best work. Perfectionism has to go, and “it’s not my best, but it’s the best I can do right now” will be your new mantra.

Co-Parenting and Killing It Parenting isn’t easy. Parenting with an ex-partner after breaking up is often complex and most don’t do it well, because often there is a lot of hurt still being dealt with. This edition we wanted to inspire parents going through separation with stories of those who have managed to put their differences aside, for the sake of their children and future grandchildren. Meet two mothers who are "co-parenting and killing it”.

Yuri Howard Yuri is part of a blended family together with four children, Ezekiel (four), Zachariah (three), Amelia (one),

including one daughter from her husband John’s previous relationship, Aaliyah (nine). Eight years after separation and a number of ups and downs, the family has found the perfect balance. Throughout the years, the family ran into some hurdles. “It was difficult when we were not all on the same page or there were miscommunications. However, we all wanted the best for our children,” Yuri told PakMag. “We realised that no matter what, our children’s other parents will always be a part of our lives as well. Once you say things to the other party in a harmful way, it’s always going to end badly.”

Parenting

Eventually, the families found a great balance through communication and helping each other out. “It started when both exes got married and were happy for each other,” Yuri explained. “We all speak well of each other. We do each other favours such as have the kids last minute even though it’s not our week, and when you know your children’s other parents are struggling, you help them out.” Yuri continues on to explain the importance of supporting one another. “If you know they’re going through a breakup, bring a box of chocolates to their house. If the other party is sick, buy some medicine for them,” she said. “We all get along very well so it’s always been pretty easy going for us. We even fell pregnant around the same time, which was an amazing bonding time. I’m happy to say my husband’s ex is one of my best friends.” Today, the family thrives to help each other out and live in harmony. “My husband’s ex always compliments me and puts her hand up to be our last minute baby sitter on our date nights. We go out and have fun together and we are like best friends, and all it is is to be nice and genuine to one another.” Yuri’s advice for other separated parents is “Don’t be sour to one another, don’t blame the children, and don’t use the kids to hurt your ex. It might be difficult in the beginning because you just broke up, but you have to put all that aside and be happy for each other’s futures. A little bit of kindness every day is what makes us such a happy family.”

Jojo Barnes Separation is never an easy road, but sometimes, you can make things work in the end. Jojo reached out and shared her story with PakMag on how they have

made things work with daughter Mia, four years after separating from Dad Tim. Over the years, there are a few things they had learned. “We both have similar values in regards to raising Mia,” Jojo told PakMag. “So, agreeing on what is best for her hasn’t been too hard. On the other hand, it was tricky to keep the lines of communication open without becoming bitter, unreasonable or making things personal.” Jojo went on to explain that in the past 18 months, things have really started to click. “Time really helped. We’ve also had two face to face ‘meetings’ to discuss the big issues, and that really helped. Texting just isn’t the same,” she explained. “We alternate Christmases, which means one of us always has an early Christmas with her, as every other year she travels to New Zealand with her Dad to his family for a couple of weeks.” Throughout the years, it has become apparent to Jojo that communication is extremely important. “Once we really got on board with the fact that all of this has to be for her and to benefit her, it became easier because we both have her best interests at heart. Try and keep your personal issues with your ex out of things unless your children are in danger, and if you can’t, seek mediation as early as possible.” Jojo’s advice for other parents on the same journey is “You don't have to be Demi Moore and Bruce Willis and play happy families, but it doesn't serve anyone to be bitter and involve the children in your disagreements. I found it really helped for us to just keep reminding ourselves that everything was in the interest of what is best for our baby. You may not love them anymore, but you must have liked them just a little at some point, so keep that in mind!”

Co-parenting is no mean feat and it’s rarely a smooth road. You may feel concerned about your ex’s parenting abilities, stressed out about financial issues or feel worn down by conflict from the relationship. However, it is possible to overcome the hurdles and get to the point where you’re co-parenting and killing it. Don’t be one of those families that are acting like you separated yesterday when it was 35 years ago. Whether you like it or not, you are going to be in each others’ lives forever, so you may as well make it pleasant for everyone’s sake. You have milestone birthdays, weddings, and future grand babies being born to look forward to. Getting over the hurt, treating each other with respect, getting on the same page, and parenting with a united front is key being the best co-parents you can be. Stop the Shouting: 12 Ways to Discipline Without Yelling STORY Jenna Galley It’s 8.00am. You have exactly 4 minutes and 55 seconds to get your family out the door. But your son is still in his pyjamas, ignoring your request for him to put on his school clothes. Your daughter is in her room, unable to even locate her school uniform because she didn’t clean up her room, like you told her to do yesterday... 17 different times. And you? Well, you’re about ready to scream the house down in an attempt to get your kids to do what they are asked the first time around. Sound familiar? Yes. Yelling is a part of life when you are a parent. But it doesn’t have to be. Sure, we are all going to let out the occasional mama bear growl but yelling doesn’t need to go hand in hand with discipline. Believe it or not, there are other ways to gain control of the kids without needing to shout, scream, swear or search Google for Nanny McPhee clones in your area. More Control; Less Shouting Your pathway to peace starts with you. That’s right – before you can work on your kids, consider what is setting you off. What are your yelling triggers? Reflect When are you extra yelly? In the mornings before the mad dash to school? After school as you try and settle the kids into their homework routine? During the dinner prep or perhaps right before bed?

Prevent If you are yelling at your kids to get dressed in the morning, prevent the fight by putting them to bed with their clothes on. Or, at the very least, their socks. This will stop the “my sock has a bump in it” problem from escalating into a yelling match in the morning. Or, if the kids are coming home from school and fighting while you try to sort out dinner, start a routine where they both spend 15 minutes of alone time in their rooms. This will stop their fighting and prevent you from having to yell at them while trying to organise a meal. Escape When your blood is boiling and you’re about to snap, run! Okay, so you can’t run away from the kids completely, but run to the closet, the bathroom or the garage and take a five minute time out before returning to the battleground. Discipline Without Raising your Voice - Get your children to listen the first time around without the need to yell or nag. Set the rules First things first, establish a clear set of expectations with your kids so they know exactly what they are meant to do. Go through the morning routine, the after school routine, the dinner routine, the bedtime routine and identify what tasks or chores they need to do.

www.pakmag.com.au | June 2019 13

Parenting

Use visual reminders Next, get creative with visual reminders – chore charts, picture routines, daily schedules outlining what they need to do at each time. On the morning chart, include tasks like putting their pyjamas in the laundry, making their bed, brushing their teeth, packing their lunch into their bag, putting on their uniform, brushing their hair and cleaning their breakfast bowl. In the afternoon a visual chart may include putting their school bag away, placing their uniform in the wash (not on the floor), doing their homework, quiet time in their room, playing outside, etc. Sure, these may seem like no-brainers to us, but our kids need a little more guidance and many children respond well to visual cues and step by step guidelines that they can clearly see and follow. But what happens if they still don’t listen, even with a daily schedule written on the fridge? Rather than yell or nag, take action. Set up negative consequences Explain to your kids ahead of time what will happen if they break the rules. The punishment is entirely up to you but may include a time out, loss of privileges or taking away toys. If they don’t follow the rules, even after a warning or two, there’s no need to yell or scream. Simply remind them about the consequences and follow through. Stick to the plan No parent wants to be the bad guy, but it sometimes needs to be done. The only way to prove that you mean business is to actually follow through with the plan. Send them to time-out, take away the iPad and keep your cool, even if they starts to lose theirs. Additional No-Yell Methods Having a discipline plan in place is a great way to reduce the need to yell at your kids. But here are a few other methods to calmly stay in control.

But try this: When asking your kids (or partner) to do something, explain WHY they need to do it. "Can you put your clothes away, because they do not belong on the kitchen table?" "Can you put your shoes on because we have to leave now?" "Can you turn the iPad off now because it’s time for dinner?" Giving them a valid reason increases the chance of them doing what they are told on the first go, without needing to raise your voice. Give them two options Kids like to be in control, which is why giving them a choice can work well. Rather than telling them to do something, offer them two choices (both leading to the same result). For example, "Either you brush your teeth now or after you read" is often more effective than simply telling them to go brush their teeth. Go quiet Screaming can get the kids’ attention (and probably your neighbour’s too). But lowering your voice to an almost whisper is just as effective. Combine with a cold hard stare and you may just have the winning recipe for getting the kids’ attention and proving that you mean business. Get down on their level Bend down so that you are talking directly to your child. This allows you to make eye contact and can be a lot less intimidating to your child. It shows them that you are talking to them, not yelling at them from above. Pick your battles We are all perfect parents before we have kids. But the truth is, no child is perfect all the time. And trying to make your kids behave perfectly every second of every day is exhausting. So don’t. Let go of the control reins and let them be less-than-perfect, even if this means they sometimes stray from the rules.

Explain the WHY

If they occasionally leave a mess, track mud into the house on their way in from playing or forget to pick their towel off the bathroom floor, don’t lose your cool. If it becomes routine, then yes, it’s time to intervene.

One of the most frustrating things about having kids is their selective hearing. Often you will ask them to do something and they will ignore it, or stall.

But some battles are not worth starting or yelling about. So save your voice (and your sanity) and let the occasional muddy footprint or dirty towel slide.

Education

Full STEAM Ahead! What you need to know about STEAM and Robotics STORY Mr Luke Matson, Digital Technologies Teacher & Educational Technology Coach, Freshwater Christian College Over the last few years, technology in our world has grown tremendously, making way for new subjects in our schools to help train the next generation for our growing world. The terms STEAM and Robotics may have popped up at your school – but what do they mean? What is STEAM? When the terms STEAM (or STEM) are mentioned in regards to education, people are referring to a group of inter-related subject areas. They include Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Robotics in the school environment is often categorised as a STEAM/STEM topic. What is Robotics? The heartbeat of robotics is problem-solving. When students are developing their knowledge and skills in robotics they are given a variety of scenarios and are required to identify the main problem (or problems) and then work out the steps that are required to solve them. In this process students design, build (engineer) and code a robot to solve the identified problem.

www.pakmag.com.au | June 2019 17

Education

Three examples of robots that students in Cairns create for the QSITE robotics challenges include: •• Sumo-bot - Students create and program a robot to stay in the sumo ring while pushing the opponent out (sensors used include a light sensor and an ultrasonic sensor). •• Rescue mission bot - a robot is created and designed to follow a path (black line) and rescue an object from a “chemical spill” (sensors used include a light sensor and an ultra-sonic sensor). •• Dragster bot - a robot is created for speed. The main skill that is developed through this process is the understanding of gear ratios.

wonderful opportunity to take this journey of discovery with your child. If your child is showing an interest in coding and/or robotics it would be a great opportunity to do this together. Part of developing a safe environment for children to learn includes them being safe online. Whether students are learning about robotics by themselves or with a family member it is also important for them to be held accountable for what they do ‘online’. One great way to keep children safe is to keep ‘connected devices’ such as laptops, mobile phones and gaming consoles out of bedrooms.

Why is Robotics Important?

Jobs of now and the Future that Will Require a Robotics Background

Robotics is important as it is a great tool through which students learn the skill of analysing a scenario, identifying the underlying problems and then developing solutions to those problems. Robotics is also a place where students learn that failing at a task does not mean they are a failure. Students learn to look at what they have already done and discover ways of modifying their creation in order to get closer to the solution.

There are many jobs that are available now and many more will be created that will require the expertise of robotics engineers as well as the associated programming skills that students develop. Undoubtedly, the main skill that students are developing as they are building and programming robots is the ability to see the underlying problem in any given scenario and create a solution.

Quite often, the biggest challenges that students face is not their lack of understanding but rather their willingness to make mistakes. It is throughout this learning journey that students begin to discover what questions they need to ask in order to successfully navigate the various scenarios that are placed before them.

History has shown that occupations come and go but the skill to critically analyse and apply the appropriate solution is a skill that will always be relevant due to the person having the ability to adapt in each and every scenario.

How to Help at Home The main way parents can help at home is to create a safe environment for children to make mistakes. When children are learning new skills, adults can have a tendency to take over and ‘fix’ the problem for the child. The action of ‘fixing the problem’ is not helping the children to problem solve. Children need to know that it is okay if they do not know the answers and it is also helpful for a parent to also admit they do not know. As robotics is reasonably new and most people would not have had much experience in this field it is a

Websites/resources to Help with Robotics If a child is interested in robotics, one of the first things I would recommend them to do is to ask at their school if there is a robotics program and how they can get involved. Further to this, it would be advantageous for children to develop their programming skills. Is your child interested in learning to code? STEM

STEM - it's child's play The world is changing faster than we can keep up with. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is playing a huge part in all this. For parents, realising the need to prepare children for jobs that don’t even exist yet is an unfathomable thought. Thankfully, this is where the concept of STEM toys step in – because after all, the best way to learn is through play. A STEM toy is any toy that fosters interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, reinforcing learning in a fun and engaging way, for various ages. Science STEM toys teaching science can cover anything from physics to outer space and everything in between. It’s definitely a step up from the traditional volcano kits. Technology Technology-based toys are quickly taking the world by storm. These may involve robotics, drones,

and much more – many of which include a learning app for the iPad. Engineering Engineering toys cover construction and building, and include classics such as LEGO® and much more. The sky is the limit, so let that imagination flow. Mathematics Any toy that involves addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be considered a maths toy. This may include cash registers as well as counting the number of blocks in a tower. STEM toys offer a fantastic alternative to video games and TV. Your child will be having fun and probably won't even be aware that they’re learning along the way, too. They may also build problem solving skills, cognitive development, teamwork, cooperation and patience. Choose a toy that combines innovative thinking with fun, and watch your child’s interest in STEM soar.

All Things Tweens and Teens

When to Give Your Kids a Phone STORY Emily Bremner The topic of when to give your child a phone is laced with controversy. So, we’re here to help you decide when the right time is. A mobile phone seems to be the must-have accessory these days with children as young as six, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they have to have one. As with most things in life, owning a phone comes with positives and negatives. From the moment your child gets their first phone, the costs will be forever ongoing. Whilst you don’t need to spend a lot of money on the initial phone, you will have to pay to keep it running. If your child is purchasing their own phone, it’s important they understand the costs and implications of not paying their bills on time. However, this can be a great budgeting lesson for them. The greatest concern that parents have about mobiles is how easily children can get addicted. If your child is good at limiting their screen time on the TV, games and iPads, then hopefully they will be able to do the same with a phone. Otherwise, you have to be prepared to be strict with their usage time. As most of us are aware, anything that you post on the internet can come back to haunt you. It’s imperative that your child is aware of the lifelong consequences which could proceed if they misuse their phone – remember, once something is on the internet, it’s out there forever. Bullying is a huge issue for children in today’s society and owning a phone can increase the chances of bullying and being bullied. It’s easy to hide behind a

screen and post nasty comments, so it’s vital that your child has resilience skills for these instances. However, owning a phone does possess many advantages for children, the number one being it can act as a safety tool. Parents and children alike can easily contact each other in times of emergency, or just for convenience as opposed to having to use a school or friend’s phone. It can foster a relationship between children and technology and can actually teach them skills they will use later in life. Alongside this, it’s a great tool to teach your kids how to be responsible with technology. One suggestion is that you buy your child a simple mobile phone for their first one – this way they can contact Mum and Dad for safety reasons, but if it has no internet access it hinders them from misusing it by going on Facebook or searching something inappropriate. If you want to buy your child a ‘smarter’ phone, that’s fine too. If you ever need it, there are multiple child proof settings that parents can make use of and great software apps like Kaspersky, and Circle With Disney. There are also alternatives to a phone like Smart Watches that allow the child to call you if need be. Ultimately, there is no specific or right age that your child should have a phone. It really boils down to whether you think your child can handle the responsibility of owning one, and whether they really need one or if it’s just 'keeping up with the Jones'. If you've decided it's time, head into Harvey Norman to find out which phone would best suit your child.

While it’s normal for teens to experience a bit of self-doubt occasionally, low self-esteem can turn into a long-term issue, causing problems at school, in friend groups or at home. Low self-esteem may be caused by stressful life events, mood disorders, bullying or ongoing medical issues.

So, you’ve had the period chat with your daughter, and you want her to be prepared for when her body changes. The anticipation of getting her first period can make any young girl nervous. There’s no telling when it might happen, so it’s best to prepare them early with a handy period kit.

A few simple ways to boost your child’s self confidence is to praise their effort instead of the outcome, teach assertiveness skills, model self-confidence and encourage your child to explore new opportunities. Positive self-talk is another essential for good self-esteem.

A pencil case serves as a great period kit, especially if your daughter is embarrassed about getting her period at school. Put several pads, tampons or period panties in the case – whichever she is more comfortable using. Panty liners, deodorant, wipes, a change of underwear will come in handy too. If your daughter’s school allows it, paracetamol can be a lifesaver if her periods cause pain or discomfort.

A healthy mind is essential for navigating the teen years. If your child continues to feel bad about themselves after trying the above, get in touch with a doctor or counsellor who will be able to help.

Expert Advice

THE PAKMAG EXPERTS ALAN REN Cairns Cars Home of Audi and Haval

DR RICHARD THOMAS Cairns Vet Clinic

Dear Alan,

Dear Dr Richard Thomas,

What things should I consider when buying my teen their first car?

My pet is itchy. What could this be?

You’ll want to purchase a car which is fuel efficient, going on the assumption that your teenager doesn’t have a lot of spare money. Safety is key, so look for a car with amazing safety features. I would recommend spending the extra money for a new car when possible, as they have gone through more stringent safety tests and are likely to last you longer. However, a second-hand car can be just as good. Buy from a dealer like ours for peace of mind as all our used cars come with a 2-year nationwide warranty. 4046 6333 www.cairnsauto.com.au

Whilst frustrating and upsetting to us, the constant irritation your pet feels can make them miserable. Skin dermatitis affects approximately 25 per cent of the dog population in Cairns and the hot and humid environment can make skin conditions worse. Whilst fleas, ticks and other parasites can be responsible, often an allergy to plants and other environmental allergens are the cause. See my full reply at www.pakmag.com.au for more details. If your pet is itchy and red you can help them find relief. Talk to our veterinarians about how we can help. 4032 9999 www.cairnsvet.com.au

DR BOBBY Griffin GRIFFIN Dr Sunbird Orthodontics

NARDINE COLLIER

Dear Dr Bobby,

Collier Lawyers

I see a lot of adults with braces. Will it make a difference if I wait a few more years to get my daughter braces?

Dear Nardine,

Yes, it can make a big difference if you wait a few more years. Puberty happens between the ages of 11-15, and this is when the facial skeleton is growing rapidly. Many orthodontic problems involve a bad bite. An orthodontist can influence the growth of the jaw bones to correct a bad bite, but only while the child is actively growing.

Do you have some tips to help me communicate better with my ex? The past can’t be changed; how your former partner behaved towards you cannot be changed; what was said and done, is done. All you can change is your reaction to the past events and how you will let it affect your future dealings with that person.

My advice would be to check with a specialist first. If your teeth can be left until adulthood to fix, they can advise of that.

See if you can respond to your ex as if they were your (very annoying) business partner. You don’t enjoy their company, but you are in business together and the only way you can conduct your business is to be civil, professional and unemotional.

IBS and the FODMAP trial diet: a dietitian-led therapy Dorothy can assist you if you have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This is a condition which often presents with abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and/or bloating. People often experience these symptoms after eating a meal. Dorothy can assist you to identify the foods that may exacerbate symptoms. Through some food detective work, she can also assist you to trial the exclusion of foods from your diet in a way that does not affect your nutritional status. There is no one size fits all approach to the FODMAP trail as different people are individually affected by different types of FODMAPs. The FODMAP (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols) trail diet was developed initially at Monash University 14 years ago and is now the subject of worldwide research. The FODMAP trail diet unfortunately is very restrictive and requires a professional approach to ensuring that you acquire the nutrients you need for health.

As people with IBS may be malnourished, it is particularly important to have a dietitian assess your diet to ensure that what you are eating is safe. Dorothy can assist you to ensure that your meals are still tasty and enjoyable so that your quality of life is not affected. There are a lot of nutritional fallacies around IBS. Ensure that you see Dorothy as an Accredited Practicing Dietitian so that your advice is evidence based. You can see your local GP to get a referral to see Dorothy in Cairns, Mareeba, Mossman and Port Douglas. As an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dorothy’s services are eligible for a Medicare rebate so talk to your GP about a health plan. Private health funds may also rebate depending on individual cover. Dorothy Dietitian is highly qualified to share her expertise with Cairns families. She is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD): the only professionals accredited to provide medical nutrition therapy in Australia. As well Dorothy has an honours degree in Nutrition from the University of Surrey, UK, a Diploma in Environmental Sustainability, is a qualified chef, and an accredited Food Safety Auditor.

HEALTH 5 FACTS ABOUT ADHD

IRRITABLE Bowel Irritable BOWEL Syndrome SYNDROME

There are three kinds of ADHD. Inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined type.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects the functioning of the bowel. If you have it, you’re not alone; it affects an approximate 10 to 15 per cent of the population, yet many people remain undiagnosed.

ADHD isn’t all about hyperactivity. Kids with the inattentive type may appear ‘daydreamy.’

Some of the more common signs of IBS include abdominal pain or cramping, alternating diarrhoea and constipation, abdominal bloating and nausea. The underlying cause of IBS remains unknown, but certain factors have been known to ‘trigger’ attacks. These include infection, food intolerance, general diet, emotional stress and medication. Symptoms are more common in women and may worsen around menstruation. While the symptoms can be embarrassing, inconvenient or painful, IBS does not cause permanent damage to the bowel and can’t lead to serious diseases like bowel cancer. Researchers at the Monash University have recently developed a special diet that may help control IBS symptoms. It is called the Low FODMAP diet, which involves swapping high FODMAP foods for low FODMAP alternatives for 2-6 weeks, then slowly reintroducing food. It is not a diet for life, and three in four people have shown to feel better after following the diet. Check www.monashfodmap.com for more info, or consult your GP or dietitian.

Males are more likely to have ADHD. 75 per cent more likely, in fact. This may be because ADHD symptoms present differently and more subtly in girls, and doesn’t mean girls are less susceptible to the disorder. Symptoms typically first appear between three and six years, but the average age of diagnosis is seven years. Sometimes, ADHD isn’t diagnosed until the teenage years or later. ADHD isn’t just a childhood disorder. Approximately two thirds of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms into adulthood.

A Healthy HEALTHY Gut, GUT, NATURALLY Fem21 is a blend of essential natural ingredients to balance the gut and help address gut related conditions like IBS. The fibre content helps enormously to bind & eliminate toxins, balance blood sugar levels, can reduce cholesterol and prevent the recirculation of eliminated hormonal metabolites. Fibre and probiotics also nourish the mucous membranes of the intestines reducing inflammation and irritation along the bowel and gut wall. A healthier and less inflamed gut results in improved intestinal integrity, tone, motility and reduces the incidence of “leaky gut”. Fibre works to balance transit time within the gut. Bump, Bub and Beyond

Taming your Toddler’s Tantrums STORY Madeline Healy, Goodstart Early Learning I can still remember the day my now 12-year-old daughter threw her first temper tantrum. We were at a supermarket in Brisbane, she was about two years old, and I had my baby in the trolley.

As the tantrum subsides, guide your child back to what you were doing or where you were going by talking calmly to them so they know what to expect. “Staying calm - even though it’s really hard - is key.”

I had said no to buying her a lollipop. She went bright red, screaming, fists of fury pumping up and down, tears rolling down her face. And then, of course, she took off, ducking under the aisles so that I couldn’t reach her.

Plan ahead

I decided the best way to tackle it was to stay calm and ensure I knew exactly where she was. But the looks from other shoppers were enough for me to try to schedule in future solo visits during the weekends when my husband was at home. There’s no telling when a temper tantrum might strike, and while you can do everything possible to avoid them, it’s better to learn some skills and tactics to deal with them. Experts say that handling temper tantrums can depend on the age of the child – they often start at about the age of one to two years old when crying turns to frustration. This is the exact age where most children are learning to name and express their emotions in the social world to have their needs met. But they often don’t control their emotions and express themselves in ways that bring them positive attention. In fact, tantrums aren’t about getting attention, the emotional outburst is often about experiencing an emotion they don’t know how to manage in a way that will bring them the support they need. Goodstart Early Learning’s national lead social inclusion Penny Markham said in the midst of a tantrum it is important stay with your child and keep them safe. “When they are having a tantrum is not the time to try to reason with them,” Ms Markham said. “Just let them know you are there for them using a warm, calm voice.

If you are planning an outing where it is possible for the child to want something they can’t have, rehearse the outing and role-play positive behaviours. When you notice how they are feeling you can also give them the words that match their emotions, so they can learn those words too, for example, “I think you are feeling frustrated, can I help you with your shoes?” Be aware that if they are tired, hungry or thirsty these are situations in which a tantrum may be triggered. Tips for Dealing with Challenging Behaviours: •• Ensure that the child is safe from harm. If you are frustrated, take some time to calm down. •• Once they are calm, talk to them about their emotions and what they experienced. Talk to them about what they should do if they feel that way again. •• Naming a child’s emotions, such as anger, sadness, happiness helps children register the emotion. •• Give children the behaviour model to express the emotion. For example, if a child is angry, say “I can see you are angry and when you’re angry you can let me know.” •• Don’t give in to a tantrum and give your child what they wanted such as a lolly or toy. This will only serve to reinforce the tantrum as an effective behaviour. •• Show empathy and understanding. Parents and carers can help children manage their emotions by being stable, calm and understanding. For more on dealing with big behaviours, visit www.goodstart.org.au and www.firstfiveyears.org.au

Bump, Bub and Beyond

What is Mastitis? Mastitis is the inflammation of the breast and is often a result of a blocked milk duct that hasn’t cleared. Therefore, milk pools in the breast and inflammation occurs. Symptoms of mastitis can often feel as if you’re getting the flu. What are the symptoms of mastitis? Your breasts may be tender or painful, hot to the touch, reddened, swollen, and you may have a high temperature over 38°C.

HELPFUL TIP Keep a box of tissues handy in every room of the house. You never know when there will be an unexpected nasty spillage, and it’s always convenient to have tissues nearby for this very reason. It’s also quite useful keeping nappies and wipes in baskets around the house so you don’t have to haul your little one to the changing table ten times per day. Waterproof cot sheets can be a lifesaver as well, and not just for potty training. Babies go to the bathroom throughout the day and night, and sometimes a nappy just isn’t enough and leaks can and do happen. Waterproof sheets will save you from the nightmare of cleaning a mattress, and hopefully save some of your sanity in the process. While you're at it, it's also a good idea to get waterproof sheets for your bed too, to protect your mattress while snuggling with bub.

How does mastitis develop? Some factors may predispose you to develop mastitis, including poor drainage of the breast, a tight-fitting bra, engorgement of the breast, or trauma such as a kick from a toddler. Poor physical health may also predispose a woman to mastitis. How can mastitis be prevented? Mastitis can be prevented by thoroughly washing your hands after a nappy change, making sure baby is latching on properly, avoiding long periods between feeds, wearing loose clothing and avoiding prolonged use of nipple pads. What is the treatment for mastitis? Treatment should be started right away. Your breast milk is perfectly safe for your baby even if you have mastitis. Continuing to breastfeed is a main factor in treating mastitis. Drain the breast frequently and ensure baby is feeding well on the affected breast. Applying heat to the affected breast a few minutes before the feed may help with milk flow. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to help the condition clear up. If your fever lasts longer than six hours, don’t hesitate to see a doctor.

DID YOU KNOW? The longest lasting pregnancy was an astounding 375 days – staggering compared to the average of 280 days! In 1945, 25-year-old Beulah Hunter from Los Angeles gave birth to her daughter Penny after carrying her for over a year. To the doctors’ surprise, Penny appeared completely healthy.

Home

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTESS With Megan and Michelle from Freedom Cairns It’s party time! You’ve picked a date, invited your guests and are ready for a great time. The next step is ensuring your home is party-ready to ensure your visitors have a clean and comfortable place to socialise in. Plenty of Room Whether you’re hosting your gathering in the dining room or outside on the patio, ensure you have enough chairs to suit every guest and then a few spares. Make sure there is plenty of room to move around without bumping into anything. Squeaky Clean Sweep, dust, mop or do whatever you need to do to give the party area a clean, inviting appearance. Remember

to de-clutter as well, as clutter can give a clean area a messy look. Kids Area If there are little people attending your party, keep them entertained at a table of their own filled with arts, crafts and other age-appropriate activities. They’ll have a blast, and mum and dad will have a moment to themselves.

Freedom's Tip: A great way to improve the aesthetic of your dining setting is by choosing a colour palette and sticking with it. Add a fresh touch such as a bouquet of flowers a small potted plant or some tropical leaves.

Party Hacks

14 Party Hacks We All Need to Know STORY Jenna Galley Bust out the balloons, the fairy bread and the piñata! We’ve rounded up the best of the best in birthday party ideas, perfect for your child’s next soirée. From cake decorating to mess minimising, these 14 hacks are sure to set the stage for birthday party success. 1. Bedazzled balloons It’s not a party without balloons. Regular balloons are great, but why not add an extra level of awesomeness to them? Pick up a package of clear balloons and add confetti to them. Choose coloured confetti to match the theme of your party. Another cute idea? Hang your balloons upside down and stick to the ceiling with Blu Tack. Add an extra bit of sparkle by dipping the bottom part of the balloon in glitter.

2. Tiered mud cake Head to Woolies or Coles and pick up three of their divine mud cakes ($4.40 each). Stack them on top of one another, add some frosting and a cute cake topper and voila, you’ve got a beautiful tiered cake that you know will taste great. 3. Treats on a stick The snack table can be a free fall of chaos at kids’ birthday parties. Add a bit of cuteness and cut down on the mess by using kabab sticks for individual portions. You can stick pretty much anything on kabab sticks – fruits, veggies, meats, even mini cupcakes (but maybe not all of those on the same stick).

Party Hacks

4. Party pails

10. Number cakes

Another way to serve a selection of snacks is to use sand pails (complete with spades to dish them up). This is a fun way to display treats like popcorn, chips, nuts and pretzels and also adds a cute “treasure hunt” theme to the table. Just make sure to thoroughly wash your pails before filling!

Another easy alternative to buying a cake is to make a numbered cake using two cake mix packages. You can make any number from one to ten using either a square tray or a round tray and cutting and arranging the cake pieces.

5. Muffin tin treat holder Reduce the spills by holding plastic cups in a muffin tin. Each cup will fit perfectly into each compartment and is an easy way to bring out the individually served juice, jelly, ice cream or mousse all at once. 6. Tee them up Turn your backyard into a balloon oasis by tying helium balloons to golf tees. Then stick the tees into the grass to create a maze of balloons for the kids to enjoy. www.soyummy.com

7. Party on with a plastic pool A plastic pool is great for cooling off but is also a great staple for a birthday party. For the younger crowd you can fill it up with sand and water. Make it a treasure hunt by hiding little toys or gems for them to dig out. Another option is to fill it with bubble solution. Use a small hula-hoop and make massive bubbles for the tots to squeal over. For the older crowd, fill up the plastic pool with water balloons for an epic backyard balloon fight. 8. Washi tape your cups Eliminate the “which cup is mine?” dilemma by using different coloured Washi tape to decorate each cup or water bottle. Simply add a strip of Washi tape around the cup to help the kids decipher which cup is theirs. 9. Decorate the tablecloth Give the kids something creative to do while they wait for their treats by placing a large roll of paper on the table. Add baskets of crayons and coloured pencils to the table and let them draw before they dine.

11. Shower curtain backdrop A popular option for parties these days is to create a photo booth. Set the stage with a funky backdrop by using a colourful shower curtain. 12. Fitted sheet tablecloth Protect your table and ensure an easy clean up by using a fitted sheet on your party table. The sheet will remain in place (even on the windiest of days) and will capture all the excess crumbs in one easy sweep. 13. Art, craft and baking trays If you are doing a crafting activity at the party, minimize the mess by using baking trays for each guest. Put all the supplies in the baking tray and keep the chaos contained. 14. DIY party favours

Party Professionals There are plenty of great local businesses that can help you create party perfection! See our Party Guide on page 61 or at www.pakmag.com.au

58 June 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au

Give the kids something fun to take home (rather than an assortment of plastic toys and lollies) by getting them to decorate their own party favours. You can get them to paint a piggy bank or ornament, create bath bombs, decorate a plain white pillow case, design a purse or make their own slime.

Celebrate

Boho-themed teen party Throwing the perfect party for a teen is no easy task. The ideas of princess and unicorn themed birthday parties are no longer an option because it’s just not ‘cool’ anymore. Whether your daughter is turning 13 or 18, a bohothemed party is sure to earn you some cool parent points. Soft colours Shades of pink, cream and rose-gold make the foundation to a gorgeous party setting. Incorporate balloons with soft colours, comfortable seating with fluffy white pillows and plates and cups to match the rest of the décor. Balloons displaying the birthday girl’s age is a popular and elegant option too.

Something to nibble on Your teen may be moving past the days of fairy bread, party pies and sausage rolls on their birthday (or maybe not – they’re pretty delicious after all), but that doesn’t mean the party snacks need to be boring. Arranging a platter with fruits and cheese, a number of different finger foods and homemade mocktails are a recipe for a great party. Picture perfect Another fun idea for a teen’s birthday party is setting up a ‘photo booth’. Hang up a boho-themed sheet, place down a few chairs and position a camera on a tripod, and your photo booth is ready to go – and makes for great memories.

“I always had this incredible love for children and it was because my mum was a day-care mum and we always had children around us growing up. I love watching children develop and grow socially and emotionally and helping them believe in themselves. I am still inspired by the teachers and school officers I am working with as I learn something new every day.

“I was born in Africa and have travelled quite a bit. We went sailing as a family in 2007 and I home-schooled my daughter. We had the best time for two years, then I went back to Uni to become a teacher. This is my tenth year of teaching and I absolutely love it.

I’ve been teaching for 30 years, and I feel like a student every day wanting to learn more. I wish I could re-teach those beautiful children way back in the 80’s using the wisdom and technology I have now.” secretary.bentleypk@cns.catholic.edu.au www.stthereses.qld.edu.au

THERESA SNODGRASS Good Counsel College, Innisfail "I have been teaching for thirty years, and my favourite subject to teach is accounting. I enjoy the challenge of bringing a subject which some people think is as interesting as watching paint dry, come to life using real-world examples. I believe Accounting is the best subject a student could study at school as it helps set them up for their future.

One of my funniest memories from this time is dressing up in a tutu and dancing in front of the school for our Christmas concert. Have to add that I had no option… Any teaching I love, but the lightbulb mathematics moments are my best.” secretary.woree@cns.catholic.edu.au www.sgmcairns.qld.edu.au

MICHELLE BRAMMER St Thomas of Villanova Parish School, Mareeba “I decided to become a teacher when I was in Year 7. I had a highly energetic, inspiring, caring and supportive teacher who I wanted to be just like – I wanted to be someone who made a difference.

My favourite food is without a doubt, chocolate. I read something once along the lines of ‘chocolate is made from cocoa beans and beans are a vegetable’ – so technically this means that I should be getting five serves a day.”

When I was a student, I always enjoyed school. I probably talked and laughed too much, however my love of learning and conscientious approach made the application to my studies much easier. Now that I’m a teacher, it’s very difficult to single out a funniest memory. Students give you such great material and I so wish I had recorded them all for posterity.”

“The best thing about being a teacher is watching the children grow. I believe I have the best job in the world. The sense of wonder that children have inspires me every day.

“I became an educator because an opportunity arose at my child’s daycare. I always wanted to be a teacher, so I grabbed this opportunity and never looked back. I have now been teaching for just over two years. My favourite subject to teach is Lego Robotics with the OSHC children.

I also love supporting them to find purpose in their world, value and worth, and the gift of who they were made to be. Watching students build a sense of worth, value each other and respect the world around them is a privilege. My favourite program at kindergarten is Bush Kindy. The children have the greatest opportunity to go back to nature and become the very explorers they were made to be!”

When I first started teaching, I was the only male educator and all the children called me Miss Corey and it lasted for months. I have many fond memories, but the one that stands out is trying to play doubles handball. We ended up butting heads a few times.”

I would like to leave my students with lasting memories of happy and constructive times in my classroom by providing them with the confidence and 'spark' within them for a love of learning. The beauty of this year level is learning through play and the children's interest drive the curriculum. There's not a day with the kids that isn't filled with smiles and laughter, some moments are so funny I cry! My biggest joy comes from the constant positive feedback you receive, the lightbulb moments and hearing the children say they love coming to Kindy.” director.redlynch@ccelc.catholic.org.au www.ccelc.catholic.org.au

I have now been teaching for 35 years. My passion has always been early childhood education and I have been inspired by the Reggio Emilia Philosophy. I love to teach literacy. It's a joy to witness the moment when a child suddenly realises they are reading. They are treasured moments. LET'S TALK COMMUNICATION

Did you know? People communicate in many different ways. Communication can be verbal (speaking) or written. We also communicate using gestures and facial expressions. Some people communicate using sign language (Auslan) or using a communication device. Twenty per cent of four-year-old children have difficulty understanding or using language. This can affect how they communicate their wants and needs, their ability to follow directions, and how they interact with peers.

Speak to your child at every opportunity and model appropriate language. Children need to hear new words many times before they can use them. Share a book every day – talk about the pictures and characters. Give your child opportunities to communicate. Give them choices and ask what they want (even if you already know!). Expand your child’s language – repeat and add a word. For example, if the child says “doggy”, the adult can expand it with “black doggy”.

What is speech and language?

Comment – don’t question. Try to give five comments for every one question you ask your child.

Speech and language can be confused as the same thing, however there is a difference.

Recast – if your child babbles or squeals, repeat their attempt by using the word they need.

Speech is the production of sounds using our tongue, teeth and lips.

What should I do if I think my child has speech and/or language difficulties?

Language is listening and understanding, as well as using words and sentences. We need strong oral language skills before we learn to read and write.

You can talk to your GP, your child’s educator or a speech pathologist. You can find out more about speech pathology services here: www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au

How can I encourage my child to develop their language skills?

If you are concerned about your child’s development, contact your local ECEI Team. No question is too silly, or concern too great – we are here to support you.

There are many strategies you can add into your everyday interactions with your child to help boost their language skills:

Contact your local ECEI Team at Mission Australia on 1800 860 555, or email us at ECEICAIRNS@ndis.gov.au

Travel

Singapore – A Must See for Families STORY Bree James It’s a city buzzing with culture in a gorgeous tropical environment. What more could you want from a family holiday? Having never travelled there before we really didn’t know what to expect. We were in for a pleasant surprise with activities to entertain a family for months. Even after six full days in Singapore, we really only scratched the surface. The food is amazing, the people are lovely, the architecture is eye popping and there is a wonderful mix of culture, shopping, and education making it a great place for families to visit for a holiday. Singapore is a beautiful island city with a population of 5.5 million people from all around the world. The majority of people speak English and everything is written in English so you don’t have to worry about any language barriers. A few things you can’t miss… Sentosa Island – A small island just a couple of minutes’ drive from the city. You can get there via car, Cable Car, Monorail or walking. There are over 20 attractions on this amazing little island from Universal Studios to Adventure Cove Waterpark iFLY, S.E.A Aquarium, KidZania and lots more. Check out the Sentosa Fun Pass where you can have one pass for a sneak peek into all 20 attractions. Gardens by the Bay – A stunning park spanning 101 hectares. There are several areas to the park including

the Children’s Garden which includes a free waterplay park, treehouses and an adventure trail for 6-12 year olds. If you buy a ticket, you can enter the Cloud Forest which is a massive greenhouse with a huge waterfall that you can walk to the top of. At night the huge (25-50 metre) solar “supertrees” put on a free spectacular light show that is a must watch. See the Merlion - Singapore’s most iconic sculpture, the Merlion (a half-lion, half-fish creature), is free to visit. Pose with the water-spouting critter before taking a walk around Marina Bay. Artscience Museum - This massive Lotus shaped building is super cool on the outside, and even cooler on the inside. The museum melds art with science in a spectacular way that is not only visually inspiring, it also interacts and changes according to your creative input. Children can draw their own characters and see them come alive as animations on the walls and floors. Forest Adventure - With 60 obstacles, three tree top courses and five zip lines, this is an adventurer’s playground! The “kids’ course” has 16 different crossings to get from tree to tree, and then finishes with a zip line to the ground. Got the travel bug now? You and your family can WIN flights to Singapore at the PakMag Expo and Family Fun Day! Simply come along on the 9th of June from 9.00am – 3.00pm at Fred Moule Pavilion and complete the PakMag Family Passport to go in the draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
