y p p a H e B , Don't Worry SEVEN THINGS ALL HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE IN COMMON STORY Jenna Gallina A recent study spanning across seven countries and conducted by Fisher-Price confirmed that the one thing that most mums wish for their children is happiness. Seeing our children sad, frustrated, depressed or anxious is difficult to say the least. And while there is no magic ingredient we can feed our children to ensure they are constantly happy - According to The Secrets of Happy Families, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler, there seems to be a few trends in what happy families have in common. HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… A FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT

HAPPY FAMILIES KNOW… THE RIGHT WAY TO FIGHT

We create goals for ourselves on a regular basis – fitness goals, work goals, personal goals. So why not do the same with your family? Create a family mission statement that helps define the values that matter the most to everyone.

Arguing is perfectly normal and natural, especially if

HAPPY FAMILIES TRY… TO FIND DAILY QUALITY TIME

and a wrong day to fight.

For most families, dinner time is quality family time. If you or your partner works nights or shift work, then dinner may not be suited to you but try and make sure you have at least a half an hour every day to spend time together without any distractions. No television. No mobile phones. No iPads.

Bruce Feiler suggests that when things start to get heated,

HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PAST

and express their feelings. No one is going to agree with each other all the time but, turns out, there is a right way

separate everybody for a bit of a breather. Ask everyone to come up with three options to the solution to the problem and then bring everyone back together to discuss the decision moving forward.

HAPPY FAMILIES… PLAY TOGETHER

Knowing your family history can bring pride and understanding to your children. It can help get them interested in history and give them a better understanding of where they have come from and what that means.

There is nothing more important than having fun together as

HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… AN EQUAL SAY

in the car and explore a new area where you have never

Everyone in the household should be treated as equal. Sure, you’re the boss and you make the rules about what’s for dinner and when it’s bedtime but your children should always feel like they have a right to express their thoughts, feelings and opinions. HAPPY FAMILIES AIM FOR… A WEEKLY MEETING Set up twenty minutes a week to have a family meeting. Talk about the highlights and lowlights of the week before and what’s on the agenda for the week ahead. Talk about goals you want to meet and if you happen to meet these goals, then perhaps offer a family reward.

a family. Try to schedule a family fun afternoon once a week (or once a month) where you get out of the house together.

Go to the beach. Go to a park. Go for a hike or simply jump been before.

Relationships are hard work and even the strongest families have good and bad days. There will be times when you feel

so overwhelmed with love for your partner and your children and other times when you will be on the verge of throwing a

shoe at their heads (probably a dirty shoe that the kids were supposed to pick up off the floor and put away).

Lead by example and try to ensure you are as happy as you can be. Eliminate the things in your life, from friendships to unhealthy habits that could be making things toxic for you.

BUY LOCAL

LIVINGiving, LOVINGoving &

Buying Local You’ve heard the benefits of buying local before. It stimulates the local economy; it is good for the environment; it helps locals keep their jobs and it supports your community. Local products are quite easy to find and Christmas is the perfect time to hunt down your local bargains, from the local foods you serve for Christmas dinner to the gifts under the tree for friends and family.

Online makes it a lot easier to shop but you may be missing out on some of the benefits to going local. You also don't know if what you are buying is exactly what you want. So here are five excellent reasons to hit the local markets and shops in and around Cairns this festive season:

You are supporting your community Shopping local means you are helping those who live close to you.

You can find one-of-a-kind items Many local shops sell handmade crafts, clothing and gifts that are as unique as they are adorable. Having this little extra love in a local product can be a beautiful way to show your appreciation for someone this Christmas.

You get a more personalised level of service Locals know their stuff and you can expect a higher level of knowledge of what you are buying. According to a recent survey by WestPac Australia Day Report, 53 per cent of Australians believe that local businesses provide a more personalised service.

You are cutting down on costs You can also find a lot of bargains by shopping locally as there are less overhead fees involved. Plus, there are less shipping and postage costs.

You are stimulating future growth Keeping the money in the local community means future growth for the community as a whole rather than the overseas competitors. There are so many opportunities to shop local - check out the local markets in your area on page 41, consider browsing through the local shops rather than online and check out the various Cairns Buy Sell Swap pages for additional home made and local goodies that the whole family will love, or consider a Christmas gift voucher from one of our many local tourism operators.

ALTERNATIVE STORY Jenna Gallina Most busy mums I know would agree that an extra set of hands around the house wouldn’t hurt. When balancing career, relationships, family and personal commitments, it can be hard to fit it all in a day, especially when there are school pick-ups to do, lunches to organise, clothes to wash, dinners to make and floors to mop. One of the latest trends for busy parents is to hire a nanny or au pair to help around the house with basic household duties and childcare. Nannies and au pairs do not usually replace childcare and often parents will choose to use both. Nothing compares to the social and educational elements that long day care, child care and family day care can provide but many families these days need a little more flexibility and a lot more help around the house. For families that do not have set working hours, often work weekends, have the space in their homes and do not want to rely on different babysitters every week, alternative care may work for you. But what options do you have? And what are the main differences?

• A nanny is a fully qualified childcare provider.

• They are not generally educated in childcare and thus are considered more as a “mum’s helper” rather than a nanny.

• Most parents have no problems leaving their children overnight with a nanny or letting a nanny care for their children unsupervised.

• Many parents will not leave their children alone unsupervised with an au pair for extensive periods of time but this is completely the decision of the parents.

• They may be hired to help with minor household duties.

• Au pairs often travel with families on outings and provide an extra set of hands to help out with the kids.

Nanny

• They can be live in or live out and often are hired for an extensive amount of time rather than on an “as required” basis. • They generally work full time or part time set hours. • They are paid a wage. • Under the new Childcare Benefit Scheme, nanny care can be claimed back via the child care benefit and child care rebate.

Nanny PA • A Nanny PA is similar to a nanny except may also perform personal assistant duties. • For working professionals with their own businesses, this may be a smart option as you can deduct part of their wage as a business expense. Talk to your accountant or a nanny service to find out more.

Paid Au Pairs • Au pairs are “hosted” by families to help out with the chores and childcare. • Paid au pairs generally receive $150 to $300 a week for their assistance.

• They can be live out but most are live in. • They generally work part-time, are hired on a short term basis (three to six months) and often are from overseas or travelling from out of state.

Mutual Exchange Au Pairs • These are similar to Paid Au Pairs but rather than being paid in cash, Mutual Exchange Au Pairs provide a certain amount of hours each week in exchange for room, food and board with the host family.

Finding a Nanny or Au Pair You can use an au pair or a nanny agency to find alternative care. Or, you can choose to do it yourself. There are a number of databases online that can help you find the perfect match as well as local Facebook groups that advertise au pair positions in your area. Gumtree is another option when it comes to finding nannies but you will require to do all the interviewing, background and police checks yourself. Going through an agency will cost a fee but this background work is already completed for you.

KEEP CALM AND

COPE WITH PARENTS STORY Jenna Gallina It’s the time of the year when the weather heats up, the closets become packed with hidden toys, the money gets tight and the stress levels increase. And, for most of us, Christmas is also the time we welcome our extended families with open arms. We all love our families. Sure, you may have a quirky cousin or an exhausting aunt in the mix, but family is family. Here are some tips to make the time you spend with them as pleasant as possible and memorable for all the right reasons.

Be the Boss

Yes, they raised you, but you’re in charge now which means if you say no sweets, no treats and no staying up late with Nanny and Poppy, no means no. Stand your ground, especially in front of the children.

Ignore the Mess

When you have extra people in your house, things are going to get messy, especially when you also add in the Christmas decorations, extra food and house full of kids on school holidays. You have two choices – you can spend your free time picking up after everyone or you can just let things be a little chaotic for a while.

Let them Fit into Your Routine

Life doesn’t stop when your parents or in-laws come to visit and often you still have to work, grocery shop, clean, cook dinners and do things around the house. Try not to feel guilty that you cannot entertain them the entire time. Most likely than not, they are perfectly content being with you and the kids, even if you’re just at home.

Give them Jobs

Alternatively, if they seem restless, you can always give them a few tasks. Ask your dad to be in charge of wrapping all the kid’s Christmas presents. Get mum to be in control of all washing. And I’m sure the kid’s uncle would love to be the official dog walker.

Let it Go

Whether they are staying for a weekend or a few weeks, there are going to be days when tension builds. You may have a fight with your partner in front of them. Your kids may get in a screaming match and you choose to discipline them in a way that your parents don’t agree with. Rather than let these things get to you, let it go. Move forward and forget it. Talk to your partner at night, take a deep breath, vent to your girlfriends at work and let it go. The storm never bothered you anyway.

Create a Naughty Jar

Parents acting poorly? Not cleaning up their mess? Swearing in front of the kids? Make a family naughty jar and ensure that everyone, parents included, contribute when they do something wrong. This can add a little bit of humour to the situation but also instils to your children that poor behaviour is not acceptable at any age. If you have a spare corner in the house, you can also create a time out corner. I can guarantee nothing lightens the mood after a bit of an argument like watching your father-inlaw pouting in the naughty corner.

See it From Their Point of View

Your parents and your in-laws were the boss for several years. As proud as they are of seeing you take control, raise your own family and become a mum, it can be difficult for them to let go. After all, just like your kids will always be your babies, you will always be their baby, even if you have the odd grey (ahem… blonde) hair and a mortgage of your own. And they will always love you unconditionally. You (and your children) really do mean the world to them, during the Christmas season and every single other day of the year. So even if they drive you nuts, put the peanut butter lid on halfway and drink all the beer in the fridge, keep these tips in mind. And buy a few extra cartons of beer...just in case.

Who is Coming to Christmas this Year? Managing your MIL author Katy Rink identifies some key characteristics in parents and in-laws that we couldn’t help but share. So, which one can you expect at your Christmas dinner?

The Hoverer

Everyday they’re hovering. Helicopter parents often turn into helicopter grandparents. Hoverers like to help and it may feel like they are watching your every move, ensuring you cook the chook right, you use the right placemats and you stir the potatoes just the way your partner likes them. Take it as a compliment or pass the reins over to them and go relax for a little bit.

The Grinch

It’s too hot. The kids are too loud. The television isn’t playing his sports program. The world is officially over according to the Grinchy Grandma or Grandpa. Give the Grinch a beer, send him to the naughty corner and tell him he can only come out once he has three nice things to say about the situation.

The Bulldozer

Also known as the steamroller, these are the parents that come in, expect the best seat on the lounge, a fresh soft drink in their hands and the remote. Selective hearing works well in these instances.

The Expert

Having kids thirty years ago means that your parents and in-laws are experts in all aspects of raising children and maintaining a household. And, these experts are not afraid to let you know. Smile, nod and take their advice in stride.

+ LOOKING AFTER YOUR EARS Story Matthew Grounds, Principal Audiologist at Hearservice Look after your ears, after all… you only get one pair.

+ THE HEALTHY MIND PLATTER We’ve all seen the food pyramid that showcases what we should be eating (dairy, produce, whole grains, etc) but, it turns out, there is much more to filling our platter with goodness than just what we eat. The Healthy Mind Platter features seven daily essential mental activities to optimise brain matter and create well-being. Designed by David Rock and Dr. Daniel J. Siegal, The Healthy Mind Platter creates an appetite for increasing awareness of how to nourish our mental well-being each day too. “The key is balancing the day with each of these essential mental activities,” Dr. Dan explains on his website. “Mental wellness is all about reinforcing our connections with others and the world around us; and it is also about strengthening the connections within the brain itself.” So what are the seven things we should be focusing on each day?

4. PHYSICAL TIME Exercise is an essential aspect to our mental well-being.

1. SLEEP

1. Clean your ears with extra care.

Wipe the outer ear with a washcloth or tissue. Don’t put anything into your ear smaller than your elbow. Don’t use cotton buds, bobby pins or sharp pointed objects to clean your ears. These objects may injure the ear canal or eardrum.

2. Blow - don’t sniff! Reduce the risk of ear infections by treating upper respiratory (ears, nose, and throat) infections promptly; blow don’t sniff to avoid blocking your Eustachian tubes.

3. Listen to your ears. Some illnesses

+ 10 Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar Apple Cider Vinegar is one of my go-to remedies when sick. Sure, it doesn’t taste that great but it is effective in helping to relieve symptoms of colds and flus. However, there is so much more to apple cider vinegar than meets the tongue. Enjoy all the health benefits of this wonder product:

1. Make your hair shine – Simply add ½ tablespoon of ACV and one cup of cold water into an old shampoo bottle and pour the mixture over your hair after shampooing.

2. Keep your home fresh and clean – Create your own

natural cleaner by mixing ACV with water. You can use it to clean toilets, dishes, microwaves, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and so much more.

3. Keep your skin clear – Dilute ACV with two parts

water and use it as a face cleanser. You can also use it to help aid in sunburns, stretch marks and even warts.

4. Whiten your teeth – Forget the expensive teeth

whitening products. Simply rub ACV directly on your teeth and rinse with water.

5. Relieve tired hands and feet – Use apple cider vinegar as a natural lubricant for massage.

Simone Kay STORY Simone Kay, Fitness Form & Function PLAY releases good hormones into the system including IGF1 and HGH - great for learning and growth. A solid dose of play improves appetite choices and creates positive connections amongst those that play. Think Tiggy with the little ones, tennis with your partner and team sports with your friends. You will find opportunity for physical play everywhere you look. PARTY - it is the season!! Move your party to the dance floor and away from the bar. The multidirectional, three dimensional movement of dance is great for stability and balance, and it helps your body metabolise the sugar (which is likely you have ingested) with Christmas party food and drink. PEACE switches off the stress hormones (cortisol & adrenalin) and switches on the anabolic hormones (progesterone) that keep your mind and body strong during this potentially stressful time of year. Everyone has a different solution for finding ‘inner peace’, but we can agree that time for daily mindfulness, gratitude and calm helps maintain a healthy life balance. Try guided meditation with the Omvana app (recommended by The Imperfect Mum) or quiet time in nature. Make time each day for the 3Ps and stay fit this festive season.

6. Balance your inner body system – Healthy alkaline

pH levels can mean the difference between feeling great and feeling drained. If your acid levels are too high, you could lack energy. ACV helps the body to regulate your alkaline levels and keep your energy up.

7. Keep your sinuses clear – Whether you are suffering with a cold, allergies or sinus congestion, ACV can cleanse the lymph nodes and clear away that excess mucus.

8. Prevent yeast infections – Let’s face it. Thrush is

not fun. Apple cider vinegar can help rid your body of candida – the yeast that causes thrush.

9. Reduce heartburn – Heartburn is caused by

stomach acid and thus it might seem odd to treat this issue with an acidic product. But adding one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water can help relieve the symptoms of heartburn.

10. Detox after the silly season

– Your body may take a beating during Christmas with the extra food and beverages. Use ACV as part of your detox program to stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help detoxify the liver.

TREE

Traditional Christmas trees are beautiful. But they can be messy. Even the artificial ones can leave a mess to clean up which is why many families are considering Christmas trees that think outside the cardboard box. Instead of adding a traditional Christmas tree to the corner, why not consider a deco hung canvas tree? Simply hang it up and you’re done. When it’s time to clean up from Christmas, roll it up and put it away until next year. Thanks to www.cotemaison.fr

Rosemary

Tree

For those working with a small space, this Rosemary Tree is a simple and eloquent solution. You can still enjoy the beautiful smell of Christmas without the mess. Using a saw, simply cut various pieces of wood and attached rosemary, evergreen or other fresh greenery to each board using a hot glue gun. Use painters tape to secure the boards on the wall in a tree form. Thanks to www.almostmakesperfect.com

DRIFTWOOD

TREE

Add a bit of the beach to your tropical Christmas with this adorable driftwood tree idea. The kids will love collecting bits of driftwood to bring home. Follow the same directions as above (Rosemary tree) to secure each piece of driftwood and then decorate with pine cones, evergreen, Christmas ornaments and fairy lights. One of the best things about choosing a Christmas tree to place on the wall is that you don’t have to make space in your home. The presents can still sit under the wall hanging but without that cluttered look. Thanks to freepeople.tumblr.com

PHOTO

TREE

Personalise Christmas with this adorable idea. Choose some of your favourite family photos or why not give the kids the camera and let them choose some things they would like to photograph? We especially love the black and white vintage look. Simply choose photos and arrange on a clean wall into a Christmas tree, complete with the trunk and star on the top. Thanks to blogg.skonahem.com

STAR

TREE

For those who still want a traditional tree but are sick of picking up broken ornaments that your toddler has grabbed from the bottom of the tree, then here is a stunning alternative. Simply add star wall stickers around the tree as well as a few star decorations on the top of the tree (where little fingers cannot reach). Thanks to www.ohhhmhhh.de

DECEMBER 2015 www.pakmag.com.au

TROPICAL PARTY The heat is on! Host your own tropical Christmas party and celebrate the sizzling hot summer. Here are a few fun ways to get into the festive spirit.

1. Light it up – wrap fairy lights around palm trees in the backyard to give the area a bit of a glow.

2. Get crafty – make your own Christmas tropical wreath to hang on the door. This is a great project to do with the kids too.

3. Tropical treats – you cannot go wrong with a BBQ-

inspired party with plenty of shrimp, chicken and meats paired with various tropical salads. A fun summery starter are these delicious Cubed Watermelon Bites from www.addapinch.com.au. Simply sandwich feta in between two pieces of cubed watermelon and drizzle with balsamic glaze.

4. Decorate – give your backyard a taste of the tropics

with an adorable pineapple gold glitter banner from Etsy store BashandCoParty. Stock up on paper umbrellas to add to the drinks and choose colourful paper lanterns to hang from the ceiling.

5. Go Green - Amp up the Christmas vibes on your table

setting with tropical greenery. Simply add some leaves and ferns to the glasses and cutlery. Secure with brown string for a festive feel.

6. Fruity Hats - Make your own DIY fruit inspired party hats from www.studiodiy.com

7. Taste the tropics – it’s not a Christmas party without

cocktails (or mocktails) in Christmas colours. Try the Match Mint Ice Tea from www.loveandlemons.com and pair with the Strawberry Lime Rose Sangria from www.kitchentreaty.com

8. Perfect your pavlova – No Australian Christmas would be

complete without a pavlova! Try this Raspberry Pomegranate Layered Pavola at www.hungryaustralian.com

9. Festive fancy dress – costume parties are always fun

but it can be quite uncomfortable to dress up in the heat. Pair your shorts, togs and thongs with these DIY party printables from Etsy store CreativeSenseCo.

10. Kiddie pool coldies – fill two kiddies pools with ice and drinks for the day. Fill one with adult drinks and one with juice for the little ones.

STORY Angelina Mortley If your family loves the outdoors and has an adventurous side, then you absolutely have to get out on the water with Bad Fishy Jet Boating. If you’ve been jet boating before, you’re in for a totally new and thrilling experience, and if you have never had the pleasure of jet boating, don’t wait any longer! Captain Patrick has 15 years of experience driving his jet boat ‘Bad Fishy’ in the waters of several Australian cities as well as around the world, so you are definitely in great hands. His passion for our local area and his enthusiasm of jet boating culminate in you having the experience to remember. So much more than just a fast, exhilarating ride with spins and slides, this amazing thirty-five minute journey takes you deep into the waterways of the Trinity Inlet where so few of us rarely ever get to venture. Speeding along the very edge of the mangroves, you peer right inside the wonder of this natural environment and if your trip coincides with low tide, you might even be lucky enough to spot a crocodile or two. On our trip we managed to see an enormous eagle with its catch of the day in its

talons, soaring straight above us as well as a curious dolphin checking out the action. Sitting back and enjoying the speed of the ride is thrilling in itself, but just before you can get too comfortable, you get the hand signal to ready yourself for the next big spin. That infamous hand signal gets your heart

racing with excited anticipation of the thrill to follow. A few brief stops to learn a little more about the environment around you also allows you to catch your breath and wipe the spray from your face before taking off again. Asked what her favourite part was, our 10 year old daughter didn’t hesitate in saying, “the spins!” And for us older kids (mums and dads), the whole trip was just awe-inspiring. Riders need to be at least 1.2m tall. Aside from that, all you need is a sense of fun, a taste for excitement and the willingness to get wet, and Bad Fishy will add the rest for an adventure you won’t forget. Cairns Tropic Storms Cheerleading are, quite literally, on top of the world after last month’s success at the FNQ Cheer & Dance Championships in Ingham. With over 40 athletes, aging from five to 52 years of age, travelling down, the team managed to place in all 15 of the categories that the club entered. The team placed first in Dance Pom Duo Junior, Pom Duo Mini, Level One Group Stunt, Level One Partner Stunt Junior, Dance Jazz Duo, Level Three Tumble and Level One Tumble. There were also second place finishes in Cheer Level One Mini Squad, Dance Pom Duo Junior, Hip Hop, Cheer Level One Senior, Level One Group Stunt, Level One Partner Stunt Senior and Partner Stunt Exhibition. Third place finishes included Cheer Level One Youth, Level One Partner Stunt Senior, Level One Partner Stunt Exhibition and Level Two Partner Stunt. The team only started nine months ago and are already making headlines for their spirit and success. One of the finalists was eight year old, Lilah Cooper, one of the Storms’ Cyclones. PakMag’s Jenna was able to sit down with Lilah, as well as with head coach, Peter Spooner and administrator Sue Stewart after the finals. And this mini superstar, along with all of her teammates, are definitely giving the community something to cheer about. Lilah joined the Storms when she was seven years old and as soon as it started. She tells PakMag that it was her cousin’s interest in cheerleading that attracted her to the sport and now, along with her teammates, she trains once a week at Trinity Beach State School hall. Some of the older crew train twice a week for two hours each training session and training is amped up when a competition is near.

Meet Storms Cyclone Lilah Age 8 School Trinity Beach State School Favourite subject English Favourite food Ice cream Favourite book Diary of a Wimpy Kid Favourite thing to do cheerleading and playing with my friend

The best thing about cheerleading? “The stunting and jumping,” Lilah tells us. Lilah is part of the Cyclones, but the Storms team also caters to children as young as four with their Raindrops program. “As a club we are reasonably laid back,” head coach Peter Spooner explains. “That being said, we are also fairly firm in discipline and training.” The results have certainly paid off and Peter admits that he couldn’t be prouder of his team. “Our kids amaze me every day with how far they have all come in the short time we have been together. They train hard and they have fun, which is the most important thing at the end of the day.” What’s in store for the Storms? More training, more competitions in 2016 and hopefully the Nationals in Melbourne next year as well. “The team are not just dancers. They are not just gymnasts. They are not just stunt people. They are all three, and they are all pretty fantastic at what they do.” Check out Cairns Tropics Storms Cheerleading Facebook page for more info or call 04 3255 0950.

Your Passport to PACKING SMART

STORY Bree James

Travelling with kids can be tough. Balancing the baggage with the kids; managing the lack of sleep, change in routine and time zone switch; and not knowing where you are, can transform what is supposed to be a relaxing holiday into a stressful nightmare.

Here are some top tips to stress less 1. INVEST IN GREAT LUGGAGE Look for:

4. KEEP TABS ON YOUR BAG • Buy a luggage tracker like LugLoc, which has a fifteen day rechargeable battery (GSM and Bluetooth Powered Tracker) so that you can find your bag in any commercial airport worldwide.

• Luggage with 360 degree wheels that can be rolled along easily whilst also carrying a child will take A LOT of stress out of your commute.

• Label your bag tag with an e-mail address, rather than a home address, so that you can be more easily contacted in transit.

• A backpack for your carry on to keep your hands free. One that carries a drink bottle outside the bag is also handy. Pack it with items that you absolutely couldn’t do without for more than a day, such as medication and a change of clothes for the kids just in-case your baggage is delayed.

5. PREPARE FOR THE JOURNEY

• A small light carry-on bag or two that fits into your larger suitcase to give you more baggage to fill on your return trip if you have over-shopped.

2. PACK IN ADVANCE Pack a week in advance, and then repack two days before and cull as much as you can. Remember, the more you take, the less you can bring home.

• Pack a special “Activity Bag” just for the kids to be responsible for. It should be a small backpack that they can carry on themselves that has some surprise activities like a colour in book, a book to read, a small toy and a little pillow and blanket inside if you are doing a long haul flight. • Keep a family travel journal: pack a blank journal, some glue, coloured pencils and scissors (leave the scissors out if going overseas) so the kids can stick ticket stubs, brochures, draw pictures and write about each day of your adventure. See the www.pakmag.com.au for a daily template.

6. FINALLY, INVEST IN GOOD TRAVEL INSURANCE

3. PACK RIGHT

And make sure you read the fine print!

• Go light on the clothing. Follow this formula: three tops for every bottom. As for footwear, limit yourself to sneakers and two pairs of shoes—one casual and one formal (kids really don’t need a formal pair).

TOP TRAVEL PRODUCTS 2

• Get space-efficient. Don’t just fold, roll. • Case Tidy’s, like Ciao Bella Travel keep bulky items, undergarments, dirty laundry and shoe’s separated (cost from $8.95) • Put footwear and other heavy items near the wheelbase to prevent the suitcase from tipping over. • Maximise every nook. Stuff shoes with socks and fill the moulded cups of bras with underwear, etc.

pakmag VET

Your Pet STORY Jane Quin

Christmas is traditionally a time of indulgence and many owners hate to see their pet missing out. As you and your family sit around the table this Christmas, you may be tempted to share all the yummy goodies with your pet. Don’t! Giving inappropriate foods and overfeeding are common causes of health problems seen by veterinarians over the festive period. Don’t give your pet a trip to the vet this Christmas; follow these tips to keep your best mate happy and healthy. 1. MANY FOODS ARE DANGEROUS AND HARMFUL TO PETS Avoid feeding the following foods AT ANY TIME OF YEAR: Chocolate – toxic to the heart and nervous system. Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas – can cause acute kidney failure. Garlic and Onions – may cause blood cell damage and anaemia. Avocado – may cause stomach upsets such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Coffee and Tea – may cause stomach upsets. Caffeine is toxic to the heart and nervous system. Xylitol (found in gum, lollies etc) – can lead to liver failure. Cooked bones – may cause stomach lacerations, punctures and can easily become stuck in the throat. Nuts – Macadamia nuts, moldy pecans and walnuts can cause seizures, vomiting and neurological issues. Sage (a seasoning used in stuffing) – can cause tummy upsets and central nervous system damage. Alcohol – may cause intoxication, coma and death. Dairy foods – can cause stomach upsets such as diarrhoea. Fatty Foods – such as sausages, ham bones etc – may cause pancreatitis.

HAVE YOU ASKED SANTA FOR A PET THIS CHRISTMAS? Pets as presents must be considered seriously. Traditionally, the influx of animals into shelters increases during January and February as many pets are given as Christmas presents and then become unwanted when the responsibility of pet ownership becomes a reality. Consider the expenses involved with owning a pet and the time needed to give them a great quality life. Be sure you have the recipient’s consent and REMEMBER that the cute puppy or kitten will be with them for many more Christmases to come.

2. “JUST A LITTLE TREAT” IS OKAY! THINK AGAIN One piece of bacon (or ham) given to your dog is equivalent to a human eating thirteen pieces of bacon. 3. FEED YOUR PET A HIGH QUALITY, NUTRITIONALLY DENSE PET FOOD - such as Hills Vet Essentials, to ensure they are getting the nourishment they need (some supermarket brands contain fillers that add bulk rather than nutrition). 4. DON’T GIVE YOUR PET MORE FOOD THAN USUAL - particularly if they’re not exercising as much - just an extra kilo or two can make a small cat or dog obese. Feeding your pet too much food can also lead to stomach upsets and diarrhoea. 5. GIVE YOUR PET NON-FOOD TREATS - such as toys, a new collar and lead or a new comfy bed. 6. TREAT THEM WITH LOVE RATHER THAN FOOD - take them for walks, throw that ball or Frisbee and enjoy cuddles on the couch.

CYCLONE

Preparation

If you’ve been in Cairns for a long time, then you’ll know Marcia. You’ll probably remember Yasi. And you may even be familiar with Larry. These are only three of the many cyclones that have hit Far North Queensland in the past ten years. And there will be more. We cannot prevent a cyclone from hitting our shores and destroying our homes but we can be prepared in the event of such an emergency.

Plan

The Bureau of Meteorology tracks cyclones and thus there is often at least 24 hours warning before a cyclone will hit the coast. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t leave planning until the last minute in the hopes it may sway off course or die down. Make sure you keep your radio tuned in, that you check your emergency kit is prepared, that you tie down and pack away all outdoor furniture and toys, that your yard is clean and that you cover all windows and doors with timber sheeting or tape across the glass.

One important thing to remember when it comes to shelters is that pets, alcohol and cooking are not permitted. The shelter will provide a plastic chair and water for each person.

Cyclones and Children

It’s also a good idea to fill drinking containers and your bathtub with water and freeze water in case of power failure. Turn off and unplug all non-essential electrical equipment.

Cyclones can be scary, especially for little ones. Explain what a cyclone is, how important it is to be prepared and show them that there is a plan in place and everything will be okay. Stay safely indoors, continue to listen for updates and bunker down in the strongest part of the house which is often the bathroom.

Pack

Keep Informed

You should have a cyclone kit packed and ready to go which includes things like a battery operated radio, torch with spare batteries, candles, non-perishable foods for three days, water, first aid kit, extra clothes, combination multitool, can opener, utensils, portable gas stove, toiletry and sanitary supplies, food for pets, cash money and important personal documents. It’s best to store these items in a waterproof sealed container.

Evacuate or Stay Put

Not everyone needs to evacuate during a cyclone. Anyone living outside a storm surge zone and in a house built after 1982 should plan to shelter at home. People in storm surge zones should already have a plan to stay with friends, family or colleagues as their first and best option. Public storm tide

cyclone shelters are a last resort and only for people from storm surge zones with no other choice.

A cyclone is a tropical violent storm with very strong winds and heavy rain. There are five categories based on the strongest gust. Category 1 will have gusts of 90 - 124 kilometres per hour while category 5 will have gusts stronger than 280 kilometres per hour, can be extremely dangerous and cause widespread destruction.

Outdoor DINING

It’s time to enjoy the great outdoors, in your own backyard. There is nothing better than enjoying a delicious meal with family and friends on a beautiful evening. And, best of all, you don’t have to drive home afterwards! GLASS, WICKER OR TIMBER? There are so many different styles of outdoor dining furniture out there from timber tables to wicker settings. When choosing the type of furniture, keep it mind the conditions. Living in FNQ, stuff is bound to get wet. If you have children, you may also want to consider choosing outdoor furniture that is kid-friendly – high benches or swivel chairs may not be best for toddlers. SET UP A TOY SPECIFIC AREA Preferably hidden around the corner from your main outdoor dining area. Nothing clutters up your outdoor area quite like push bikes, ride-ons, sports equipment and dirty toys that the kids should have put away. Invest in a large outdoor wooden toy box to keep all of these items or choose an area reserved for toys. ADD SOME FLORAL AND FAUNA Nothing brightens up the dining area quite like hanging baskets and planters. You can also find some beautiful outdoor wall art and canvasses that can add a splash of colour to your walls. SEEK SHADE Living in FNQ has so many perks and the sun is definitely one of them. But it’s always a good idea to have a shaded area for dining and playing. If you don’t have a patio with a roof, then consider a sun shade or a gazebo to create a beautiful outdoor dining atmosphere that is sun-safe. SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE AREA You will probably have enough natural light from the sun during the day but once night falls, it’s time to get creative. Pendant lamps are great for outdoors as are tiki torches or overhead lighting. You can also add a bit of fun to the backyard with fairy lights draped around the trees or hanging from the ceiling. And make sure you also have a few gorgeous candles on the table. BECOME THE MASTER OF COOKERY Every outdoor dining area needs a BBQ. It’s pretty much required. In addition to a BBQ, you may also want to consider a bar, a pizza oven or even a full outdoor kitchenette which includes a sink for cleaning up after dinner. PREPARE FOR HEAT One final thing that your outdoor dining area needs is a fan. Because it will get hot! If your outdoor area doesn’t already have ceiling fans installed, you can purchase stand-alone ones to add to the corners and ensure better air flow during those extra humid summer days.
