Kids love physical activity. They love to be outside and they love to move. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyles and trying to fit so many things into our day can sometimes mean we neglect finding time to play. Chances are, even if you enjoyed exercise and fitness prior to having children, some of that dedication may have taken a backseat when they came along. In the nitty gritty of everyday life and parenthood, it’s inevitable that you may have less time to spend on yourself. In turn this usually means a flow on effect on your own wellbeing and fitness. It doesn’t need to be that way though. With obesity levels at all-time highs in Australia for both adults and even more concerning, children, making the time to be active with your kids can be so rewarding. Not only will it get you moving, but it can be a fantastic bonding experience. Participating in sporting activities as a family can improve confidence (for kids and for parents alike), body image, coordination and even have repercussions in the classroom! Physical activity, no matter the source, is known to have a range of other benefits ranging from: • Improved cardiovascular fitness • Assists to achieve and maintain a healthy weight • Improves posture • Better sleep • Boosts self-esteem and confidence • Improves concentration • Helps relaxation • Builds strong bones and muscles • Improves balance and skills • Maintains and develops flexibility • Provides opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills Children on average need around 60 minutes of physical activity every day, but it doesn’t have to all be at once. It all adds up! The important thing to remember is that daily exercise doesn’t have to be time consuming or considered a chore to be beneficial. Adding exercise in as part of your day allows you to spend time with your children as well as reap the benefits of physical activity. A walk around the block after dinner, a game of tag, running around the playground, or perhaps taking part in a more structured activity like swimming, mums and bubs classes or dance is more your style. Whatever you choose, you will never regret the time you spend with your children and making the decision to get moving!

SPORTY PARENTS Simone Kay Fitness, Form & Function 8/261 McCormack Street, Manunda www.fitnesscairns.com.au How and why did you get involved in the sport? I started to focus on my own fitness about 15 years ago when I had a very sedentary job, travelled a lot and had some fairly poor lifestyle habits. I hired my own personal trainer and it truly changed my life. My travels brought me to Cairns and I decided to make health and fitness my career. I love it because empowering people to take charge of their own health journey and seeing the positive changes that this can impact right throughout their lives is enriching for my own life and makes every day in this job amazing. What age group(s) do you work with / which is your favourite? I work with most age groups. Every group has something special that I enjoy and I really don't have a favourite. My favourite people to work with are those that are interested in their own health journey and want to take personal responsibility. They are curious about everything, especially their own body and how to get the most out of it and out of life. They are open to exploring their own possibilities and very much like children will give things a go even if the outcome is uncertain. If I had to pick a favourite group it would be mums of all ages. From those with newborns to those with grown children they are interested in what has happened to their body and in how they can look after it for the rest of their lives. In your opinion, why is it important for parents and guardians to get involved in fitness and sporting activities with their children? It is SO important for your children to see you being active. The biggest influence in their lives is us - their parents. The big upside to being active with your children is that they will want to play with you. I have always been involved with my children, now six and eight and one of the best days I had recently was a Sunday at Sugarworld where all three of us went sliding all day. They wanted me to play with them, and because I'm an active mum it was easy and fun. Being involved in activities with your kids will add years to your life and life to your years.

Lachlan Farquharson Cairns Indoor Sports 164 Mayers Street Manunda Phone: 40322844 www.cairnsindoorsports.com.au How and why did you get involved in the sport? I don't ever remember not being involved in sport. My dad used to make my cricket bats when I was too little to hold a proper bat and even from a very young age I used to organise the kids in my street into cricket teams to play backyard cricket. What is an average day like for you? I arrive at the sports centre early to open up and set up for Tiny Tots. I get to enjoy the controlled mayhem of lots of children running, jumping, and having fun. I then sneak into the office to get through some tedious paper work and depending on the day, I coach school aged children in the afternoon and then run the night time competitions. What age group(s) do you work with / which is your favourite? From the toddlers right through to adult competitions and everyone in between. My favourite would definitely be the kids who arrive at the centre with lots of enthusiasm to join in the fun. It doesn't matter if they win or lose they just want to run, jump and be part of it. In your opinion, why is it important for parents and guardians to get involved in fitness and sporting activities with their children? Kids love spending time with their parents and showing them a new skill like how they can hit a cricket ball or kick the ball into the goal. Even our tiny tots love showing mum or dad how they run like Lightning McQueen in the running race and get more confident when mum is there cheering them on. And it's no secret that being active is good for you .

Heath Williams C-Me Swim School www.cmeswim.com.au How and why did you get involved in the sport? I grew up in Weipa spending a great deal of time in and around water. During my boarding school days in Brisbane I was a competitive swimmer. When Hayley and I had the opportunity to buy her parents learn to swim business I said goodbye to my day job with Ergon and happily “jumped in”. What is an average day like for you? Early starts and late finishes with a “Nana nap” at lunch time. On average I’m in the water about six hours each day. What age group(s) do you work with / which is your favourite? I teach children as young as two right up to our Maxi squad swimmers, some of which are 14 years. No, can’t have favourites! Do you have a funny or interesting story/memory you’d like to share? I love it when the children ask me to sing songs from Playschool. Many of the kids (and Mums) think I look like Jay Laga’aia from Playschool. In your opinion, why is it important for parents and guardians to get involved in fitness and sporting activities with their children? You can’t put a price on that wonderful feeling of bonding with your bub or toddler during swimming lessons. It’s magical. As the children get older, being an active and healthy role model for them is very important. Lead by example. Get in the water with them, get on a bike with them. Just get out there... and spend time with your children.

PARENTING

pakmag

PREparing for prep story Jenna Mottin

For some parents the new year ahead marks the beginning of their child’s journey into formal education. While Prep is not compulsory in Queensland, enrolment rates are as high as 98%. With the change in the Australian Curriculum parents and teachers have seen Prep evolve from a flexible play-based style of teaching to more formal curriculum focused program. Parents of children who have gone through the current Prep program have reported that Prep has become what grade one used to be which can understandably leave some parents apprehensive and asking: ‘Is my child prepared for Prep?’

Y

our child’s readiness for schooling is something only you can be the judge of, however the tasks listed below are a good baseline indication of preparedness:

Some of these tasks include: • tying shoelaces • putting on their own sunscreen • carrying their school bags into the classroom and putting lunches and drink bottles into designated areas • saying good morning to adults • asking for help • asking to go to the toilet Other things that we assume our children know however they most likely do not, is taking turns to speak and waiting their turn instead of interrupting. You know the scenario: you and your friend are trying to have a conversation about something of high importance but you find yourself constantly interrupted by your little loved ones. Sound familiar? Well, imagine how hard it must be for the teacher to be trying to discuss things with the class only to be interrupted by numerous little ones who haven’t yet learned the social skill of waiting their turns. So how can you help instil this ready for Prep? Play board games or easy card games like “fish” or “snap” in which the children must learn to wait for their turn. Verbally praise them for “good waiting!” In conversation explain that they must wait their turn, just like when they are playing their games, and, similarly, praise them when they do remember to wait their turn. Their teachers will LOVE you for it!

What about their speech? Dr Peter Flipsen Jr, an American Speech Pathologist stated that by four years of age your child’s speech should be completely intelligible to strangers. This can be tricky for parents because often they are tuned-in to their own child and can understand everything that he or she says. If you are unsure about their speech, be aware of adults reactions when your child speaks – do they turn to you to ask for clarification? That may be an indicator that their speech is delayed. If you are in doubt or have any concerns about your child’s speech and sound development, see a speech pathologist for an assessment. Research shows that children’s oral language skills are strongly linked to academic success, especially reading abilities. More specifically, research by Scarborough in 2001 found that preschool children with strong understanding of word meanings tended to have better listening comprehension, word recognition and reading comprehension in the later primary years. This makes sense because to do well at school you need to have good listening, attention and vocabulary so you can understand what the teacher is saying to you and students need to be able to speak in well-formed sentences before they are able to write well-formed sentences. Apart from the close relationship between oral language and reading, Given almost all classroom-based learning depends on oral language, helping children develop mastery in this area is important for their overall academic success.

Skills children are expected to have by age 5: Play and Social Skills • Can communicate with a variety of people and makes friends easily. • Engages in complex imaginary games with simple rules. • Knows how to join in and start conversations and interactions appropriately.

Listening and Understanding • Follows 3 step instructions eg: “get your pencils, put them in the tidy tray and then line up near the door”. • Follows instructions that include the words ‘first’, ‘last’, ‘before’ and ‘after’ • Understands humour and age appropriate jokes.

Speaking • Has an extensive vocabulary and can express ideas clearly. • Can speak clearly with any unfamiliar listener with very few minor speech immaturities remaining e.g. says thumb as “fum”. • Tells stories or gives a morning talk without any help. • Has a long and detailed conversation with a variety of people on a variety of topics. • Can explain why something happened and consider some solutions to problems.

Keys to Effective Activities for Children with ADHD (What You Need To Know) story Rob Gronbeck

Many parents see their kids suffering with inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness – more commonly known as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This brain-based condition impacts performance in the classroom, the sports field and general everyday living. If left unchecked children with ADHD are at a much higher risk of greater levels of depression and criminal activity and lower levels of self-perception, social functioning, academic performance and school enjoyment and their parents and siblings are dealt with risk of stress, burnout and reduced health outcomes.

D

espite the above statistics and negative stereotypes the media portrays of ADHD, several forms of activity have been shown to be extremely useful, including a new 3D brain game which I will briefly mention at the end of the article. These keys points are for parents to keep in mind when seeking to assist their children suffering from ADHD (regardless if adhering to a medication or non-medication approach) are summarised from millions of dollars and decades of research grants and investigation.

Engaging, Challenging & Fun The number of times my mother said, “If you only put the amount of effort into your studies as you do those games...you’d be a genius!!” Often a lack of attention is a symptom of an underwhelming task which children have absolutely no interest in taking part it. Behaviour psychologists like Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi points to the ideal state as being complete absorption or “flow” – which is the highest form of learning because the focus is so engrossed of mastering a task that everything else disappears in the background. Video games are often scorned but these activities actively engage the player by gradually building up skill and challenge level and can be the cause of riotous laughter and cheers depending on the kind of game being played. We all know how that “Yes Mum/Dad” reply we get which means ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about I’m playing a game.’

Physical activity and sports Getting the heart pumping has been shown to enhance brain activity in the areas responsible for attention, decision making and planning. Also shown to improve childhood cognition and brain health, physical activity is of particular use for children suffering in Maths or English. Sports are a physical activity but not all sports offer the same benefits as team sports can sometimes be too much to process and come with super competitive kids who will show little patience for lapses in concentration. Activities that tax the attention system and require an intense focus on body movements such as gymnastics, swimming, diving, wrestling, tennis, ballet and martial arts can be great for kids and young adults with ADHD. These individual sports offer structure and a low frustration factor while also being active and engaging.

Focus on development The above two points are crucial however all efforts may be for naught without an encouraging, supportive and likeable coach, facilitator or trainer to work with your child. Dropout rates of sports and physical activity are quite high with 45 percent of children dropping out between year seven and eight. School, parttime work and social demands play a part but surveys reveal approximately half of all dropouts occur after run ins with the many ultra-demanding, unsympathetic, ‘winning is everything’ coach (should they even call themselves that). Like a previous

PakMag article of mine from 2013, be aware of who you allow to work with your children and make sure they come from a place of catching them doing something right. Celebrating success should occur and conversely refocusing and encouragement should occur when ‘things don’t go to plan.’ Push ups or running laps as punishment only confuses young minds and makes them hate exercise, which is clearly a terrible outcome. Now, a little about the program I mentioned earlier. Since February 2014 I’ve been working with young athletes and children to develop their attention capacity for sports and the classroom with a program called the Neurotracker. It’s a novel 3D ball tracking game with physical actions added in gradually to build up the brain areas responsible for attention and controlling impulses (the frontal lobes) all in an encouraging and supportive environment. We definitely celebrate a PB (personal best) and come to learn that challenge isn’t something to be afraid of - it’s something to approach and do your best today and next time when you try again. Which is exactly what my mother used to say to me on my way to any sporting event – and that made all the difference! For more information on the Neurotracker contact Rob Gronbeck, at Cairns Sports Performance Clinic www.masterfulperformances.com. au, phone 0405 245 608 or email: rg@masterfulperformances.com.au

Brand New Action Attraction If you’ve ventured along Kamerunga Road at Smithfield recently, chances are you will have noticed a stunning new edition to the scenery.

T

he Australian Armour and Artillery Museum has only recently thrown open its doors to the public and is a fabulous new attraction for Cairns locals and visitors alike to explore and enjoy with the largest collection of armoured vehicles and artillery in the Southern Hemisphere. Some visitors who have been amongst the first to tour the museum have remarked that the facility wouldn’t be out of place in Canberra and it is an unexpected and welcome edition to Cairns. Local Dad Trent, who took along his sons Jordan, 5 and Sean, 3, to explore the museum said the range and variety of exhibits was staggering and the museum has plans to continuously expand and renew the displays, with the list of coming attractions on the museum’s website extensive. “The best thing about the museum is that you can get up close with the displays and walk right around them. The boys particularly enjoyed the tanks and armoured cars and they have a fantastic hands-on mock battle area with toy tanks and soldiers for the kids to play.” A recent addition to the museum, and one the younger guests are sure to enjoy, is the opportunity to take a ride in a converted Armoured Personnel

REVIEW

Carrier. Presently, rides are available daily at 11am and 2pm, subject to weather conditions and the condition of the circuit. Rides are an additional cost on the price of admission. Daily guided talks will commence in 2015. Apart from the rides, the rest of the museum is located indoors and undercover so it is the perfect place to entertain the kids if the rain sets in. There is a fantastic little sit down area for those who’d prefer to take a break while touring the museum and there is extensive free car parking right outside. The gift shop is also well stocked with appropriate souvenirs and will be sure to keep the kids entertained in itself! In 2015, the museum expects to open another much-anticipated new attraction - the brand new 50 metre shooting range is currently nearing completion and should provide a fantastic venue for everything from bucks and hens events to office team building exercises. The Australian Armour and Artillery Museum is located at 1145 Kamerunga Road Smithfield and is open seven days from 9.30am–4:30pm with the last admission at 4pm each day. Closed New Year's Day. For more information visit: www.ausarmour.com/

Visit the Museum before February 1 and take your PakMag voucher to receive 15% off the advertised entry.

Does your cyclone plan include a health plan? In a typical wet season, around eleven tropical cyclones form in the oceans around Northern Australia. We’re constantly reminded to have our cyclone kit ready in the event that one does hit us here in Cairns, but Dr Uri Scelwyn from Omega Health Medical Centre adds that your cyclone plan should also include a health-care plan. “If a cyclone does hit us, you need to be able to take care of yourself for at least three days – and ideally up to seven – while regular services are disrupted,” Dr Scelwyn said.

HEALTH JANUARY

“Make sure any vital medications you need are well stocked, and that any urgent scripts are filled out. “Talk you your family GP, or healthcare provider, to put together a plan so that you can be confident that you and your family can remain as comfortable as possible during and in the days following a cyclone hitting the city,” he said. Dr Scelwyn said having a first-aid kit is critical. “Emergency kits are available in many shapes and sizes – and from as little as $20 on the St John Queensland website,” he said. “They contain things like bandages and pads for dressing minor wounds, a shock blanket for retaining warmth and a booklet to guide you through basic medical treatment. “Of course none of this is a replacement for a professional doctor. If you do find yourself in an emergency medical situation during or after a cyclone you must dial triple zero as soon as possible.” Dr Uri Scelwyn is one of the many experienced GPs at Omega Health Medical Centre in the Cairns suburb of Manoora. The Medical Centre has its own industrial strength generator to ensure that, even if the power grid does go down, the Centre can continue to provide essential medical services. Omega Health Medical Centre is open until late every day of the year – including Christmas, Easter and New Year’s Day – and has a range of GPs for you to choose from to be your own family doctor. You can make an appointment online at www.omegahealth.com.au or by calling 4053 7900.

Time to make a change It’s time we, as parents, took a stand on healthy living, so we can be there for our kids in the future. As a fitness trainer, I constantly hear parents who are often quite overweight, telling me how much they would love to get fitter and healthier but, yes you guessed it, they simply don’t have time. But what good will you be to your children when you suffer from debilitating illness and injury due to your decades of sedentary lifestyle? Do you want them to have to take care of you when you need your knee/hip replacement, or have to fetch you your diabetes medication? Will you feel sad when you’re unable to chase a ball with your future grandchildren? Bring a bit of balance into this crazy, busy stressful life we all lead. Give your kids the best of everything and leave a bit of time every week to attend an exercise class yourself or hire a personal trainer. They will thank you in the long run. Narelle Muller is a group and personal fitness trainer at Fit ‘n’ Well (0412 745 519), as well as a health writer. Her group exercise classes at Edge Hill School welcome children to play while parents workout.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis (or Mummy’s Wrist!) One thing I found most surprising as a new mother was how physically demanding it was. Tiny babies don’t look heavy when someone else is carrying them! DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis is a condition which causes pain around the base of the thumb and wrist. It is so common in new mothers (including myself!) that it is sometimes referred to as “Mummy’s Wrist”. The pain of De Quervain’s is caused by inflammation and swelling of the tendons due to repetitive movements such as grasping and lifting an infant. Your GP can diagnose this condition by examining your wrist. No special investigations or tests are usually required. Treatment primarily involves resting the wrist which is obviously very difficult when you have a baby to look after! In this case, wearing a special splint or wrist brace helps prevent you from moving your thumb in certain ways so that the sore tendons can be rested. If the pain continues despite this, you may need an injection of steroid around the tendon to settle down the inflammation. By Claire Stewart.

Preparing for Pregnancy If you’ve decided that 2015 will be the year to add to your household, there’s no better time than now to start making some changes to ensure your health and wellbeing is at a premium and you’re prepped and ready for pregnancy. Health checks Book a check-up with your GP. Unless you’ve had one in the past year, it’s a good idea to have a pap smear. Your GP may also wish to do a breast check and make sure your vaccinations are up to date. While most of us usually dread it, it’s also a good idea to see your dentist as any pre-existing oral health problems can be exacerbated during pregnancy.

Healthy Eating & Exercise It goes without saying that now is the time to start taking note of what you put into your body. Getting in some light daily exercise is a great idea, as it is thought to assist with managing morning sickness not to mention promoting wellbeing. When planning for pregnancy, it is best to avoid alcohol as research suggests there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when pregnant - therefore it is best to abstain altogether. If you are a smoker, seek help to quit as smoking is linked to increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature labour, and sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), which includes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Prior to conception is also a great time to consider taking a prenatal vitamin including folate - which is proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Investigate Options For Pregnancy Care In Queensland, there are four main options for where to have a baby: in a public hospital or public birth centre (usually attached to a hospital), in a private hospital, or out of hospital (home birth). The ‘Having a Baby in Queensland’ website (www.havingababy.org. au) is a great reference and details the factors which may influence where you choose to have your baby. These include: • where you receive your pregnancy care (at home, in a hospital, in a community clinic) • whether you have to travel for birth, and how far • who provides your care during pregnancy and during labour and birth (midwives or an obstetrician) • what choices you have in how to birth your baby (water for pain management, water birth etc) • whether 'low intervention' birth is supported • whether you have close access to certain procedures or services • whether your support people are able to stay with you • whether there are out-of-pocket costs for your care (and if Private Insurance covers this if applicable) • whether you have in-home care after birth

Cost of Antenatal Care If you have Private Health cover, get in touch and find out what and how much is covered under your policy. There are a number of options when it comes to antenatal care, including private hospitals and obstetricians, public hospitals and birth centres. If you choose to give birth in a private hospital under the care of an obstetrician, it is likely you will have some out of pocket costs not

BUMP &BUB completely covered by your private health insurance. It is useful to get information regarding this before making a choice on where you give birth.

Cost of Children While you’re examining the effect giving birth may have on your hip pocket, it’s worth getting a jump start and think about the implications pregnancy and children will have long-term. If your company has a HR manual, ascertain whether your company has a maternity or parental leave policy, any Centrelink benefits you may be entitled to (such as the Paid Parental Leave scheme) and although it may seem a long way off getting to know the child care options in your area and planning ahead will put you ahead in the long run.

Chart Your Cycle Now that you’re ready to start trying, charting your cycle can assist in determining the ideal time to get down to business. Charting has gone hightech, with apps such as iPeriod (yes, really!) available to keep track for you.

Support networks When planning to start or add to your family, one of the most important options to consider is the support network you have around you. Although it is true that many families these days live far away from family and make do, it is definitely much harder. The old saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ rings true, so having friends and family close by will be a boon when your little one arrives. Remember, a newborn will bring with them opportunities to meet other like-minded mums (and dads) too so becoming a parent may open up a whole new avenue of potential friendships!

TRAVEL

pakmag

Surviving in the air at 30,000 Feet I remember having the most blissful flight with my daughter who was on her first long-haul flight from Europe to Australia at seven months of age, only to return four weeks later with a completely different infant who was awake and ready to party! Need I say it was a very long flight! At the end of the day getting organised for a short or long haul flights will vary as well as the age of the children you are travelling with. What works on one flight may not work on the next so remember to stay calm and collected and be willing to try different options. Here are some general tips for flying with your little passengers. Infants • Breastfeed or feed your infant on take-off and descent, which will help relieve air pressure or pack a dummy/pacifier. • Request a bassinet. Make sure your infant meets the aircraft carrier’s guidelines. You may also be required to take your sleeping infant out of the bassinet during turbulence so be prepared for that situation. • Use an Ergo carrier or a similar product which will enable you to be hands free when boarding. • Take some small infant food or food pouches, which your little one knows and likes. Most airlines do cater for infant food but may not be age appropriate or not to your infant’s liking. • Take a muslin with you which can be used to block out the cabin lights. • Make sure you have easy access on-board to nappies and wipes, organise yourself a starter pack that you can place in your seat pocket. • Try and sleep when your infant sleeps if traveling overnight. • Note that Baby food and milk is exempt from the 100ml liquid guidelines for international flights.

Toddler • Check which children and adult meals are being served on your flight to find the most suitable.

• Pack their own cup to prevent drink spills, this will reduce the need to change clothes.

Other

• Pack snacks as little tummies are always hungry.

• Pack empty plastic bags or Ziploc bags for waste or wet clothes, as soon as you have anything that needs to be tossed you can put it away.

• Pack a magnetic drawing board or magnetic puzzle instead of Lego and normal puzzles which can easily be lost.

Children • Ignore any household rules you have about TVs and computer usage during the flight. • Pack the iPad, add new Apps prior to leaving home, chargers or USB cords which can be connected on most flights. • Pack kids headphones and maybe even a splitter so you can use two headphones for the one iPad. • Pack a few small inexpensive toys that you won’t mind losing. • Pack a lollypop or two to help with their ears or keep them happy. • Pack a game like UNO or stickers. • Try and have them seated next to the window to keep them entertained, also makes for a good cushion rest if you are flying economy.

• Keep everyone well hydrated.

• Make sure you have some spare clothes and a jumper to deal with cabin temperatures. • Choose a family friendly airline wherever possible. • Ask the airline if you can be seated next to an empty seat. • Minimise your carry-on luggage as much as you can. • Have your toddler or child wearing their PJs before boarding the plane for long overnight flights. • Take a pair of plane friendly socks. Bronwyn Darnoc is the publisher of the Simply for Flying personal flight logbook and Flight Travel Kit. See www.simplyforflying.com for further details.

• Try and keep them to drinking water and keep sugared drinks to a minimum or best not at all unless you are after a lively one.

• Wrap some toys/treats individually, which they can unwrap each hour during the flight, a fun activity to keep them entertained and rewarded. • Make a flight pack entertainment which they enjoy on-board.

W

hy is martial arts important for children? Every parent wants to feel that their child is confident and safe in their schools, homes and community. The team at Nexus Combined Martial Arts believe it is important for every child and family to grow healthy in self confidence and learn self protection skills. Martial Arts is a great way to help our children learn the valuable life skills of determination and dedication. Nexus Combined Martial Arts brings martial arts training to the modern era, without losing the core values of Discipline, Respect, Honour, Integrity, Empathy and Self Control. Martial arts training instils confidence and improves focus, increases teamwork skills as well as improving physical fitness. Students continually learn new skills and set new goals - some work their way through the belt ranking system to achieve their black belt and some just want to enjoy a sport. There is a common misconception that Martial Arts just teaches punching and kicking. While these

skills are a part of the program, the reality is that Martial Arts teaches your child how to peacefully deal with situations and to avoid physical confrontations altogether unless absolutely necessary for self defence. Nexus teaches students the quickest and most effective ways to deal with bullies and how to avoid potentially volatile situations using situational awareness and conflict resolution skills. By helping children to develop confidence and self respect we are helping them to be more resilient and self assured and this effectively helps them to avoid being an ‘easy target’. Martial Arts is also a great way to teach your child self control, respect for authority, good listening skills and empathy for others. Soke Brad Seymour, combines the best of a multitude of Martial Arts to present truly effective techniques. Soke Brad has trained in various styles of Martial Arts including Karate, Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu, Hapkido, Judo, Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA. Learning the skills of Martial Arts is the best gift that you can give your child... and most importantly it is heaps of fun.

“Having initially taken our five year old daughter to Nexus in the hope it would improve her confidence as she started school, what resulted is considerably more than we had hoped, having watched her confidence flourish, her discipline and focus improve under the guidance of Brad and his team. Nexus provides a fun and friendly environment and is much more than just a Martial Arts school, organising family events such as fishing days, the ‘Gladiator Challenge’ and other social activities in addition to the formal classes. We have been made to feel part of the ‘Nexus Family’ from the first day and have made many new friends along the way.” Joseph Owen, Parent.

PETS

Cairns Veterinary Clinic

The Importance of Desexing your Pet Across Australia, animal shelters and rescue organisations are overflowing with unwanted pets and thousands of cats and dogs are euthanized each month. All Pet owners need to be responsible and do their part for animal welfare by ensuring they don’t contribute to the pet overpopulation by desexing their pet.

D

esexing is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthesia, which prevents sexual and reproductive behaviour and related health and behaviour problems. In males the surgery, called a castration, involves the removal of the testicles. In females the surgery, called a spey, involves the removal of both the ovaries and the uterus.

Did you know? Desexing your pet can save you money. Cairns Regional Council gives a discounted registration for desexed pets, saving you up to $70 per year. Desexing can extend the life and health of your pet. In female dogs and cats, desexing prevents the risk of conditions such as Cystic Ovaries, Ovarian Tumours, Uterine Infections, Mammary Tumours (breast cancer) as well as physical and nutritional exhaustion if breeding continually. In males, desexing prevents the risk of conditions such as Prostate Cancer or disorders and Testicular cancer. Desexing male cats reduces territorial fighting, which in turn prevents cat fight abscesses and decreases the risk of exposure to life threatening diseases such as FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).

Desexing your pet saves you from humiliation. Desexing reduces inappropriate and embarrassing sexual behaviour such as humping your best mate’s leg! Other unwanted behaviour desexing can help prevent includes wandering, territorial aggression, fighting, dominance, urine marking, howling and yowling. Desexing your female cat can prevent 420,000 unwanted kittens! Yes, that’s right, an undesexed seven year old female cat has the potential to generate 420,000 kittens (through the generations her offspring have). Imagine how many kittens an undesexed male cat can potentially be responsible for!

The procedure The best time to desex your pet is between three and six months of age but pets of any age can be desexed.

this drug has taken effect, your pet will be placed on intravenous fluids, to aid hydration, and given a rapid recovery anaesthetic. This anaesthetic agent improves anaesthetic safety and hastens recovery without leaving them groggy or weak. They will then be placed on an anaesthetic machine which delivers oxygen and anaesthetic gas to maintain anaesthesia. • Your pets will be watched closely during the procedure and monitoring equipment is used to check the heart rate and rhythm, the oxygen levels in the blood, blood pressure and breathing. • Once the surgery is complete your pet is given pain relief and antibiotics and monitored until they are fully recovered from the anaesthetic.

• Desexing surgery is performed from Monday to Friday and your pet is normally discharged the same day.

• After the procedure your pet should be kept quiet, clean and dry and confined for 10 days until the stitches have been removed.

• Your pet will be thoroughly examined before surgery and given a preanaesthetic injection to make them sleepy, calm and less anxious. Once

TROPICAL POOLS There is probably no greater advantage to living in North Queensland than the ability to swim year round! Due to some of our not-sowelcoming wildlife, like crocs and stingers, the allure of our beaches during the hottest time of the year can be somewhat diminished so many homeowners seek a swimming pool as an alternative means to cool off. story Carly Hammersley

T

he humble swimming pool has come a long way and there is more choice than ever for families looking to create their own backyard oasis. A well-designed pool can enhance the appearance of your property, add value to your home and enrich your life. With options limited only by your imagination, space and budget, here is a run-down of the choices available.

and are chemically neutral - meaning you need fewer chemicals to balance water and keep it clear and healthy. The main limitation of fibreglass is the variety of sizes and shapes that are available and depth limitations.

Chlorine, Salt Water or an Enviro option?

Concrete swimming pool construction is by far the most widely used method of construction in North Queensland, with a wide variety of shapes, depths and features. The versatility of concrete means it can be used to create a pool in even challenging environments - this can include creating suspended or infinity edge pools which have infinite wow factor! While typically concrete swimming pool construction can take longer, it is considered to be the best method for most backyards as the benefits of functionality and design overshadow the longer building time.

Chlorine in tablet or liquid form has been the traditional choice to keep pools clean. In recent years, Salt-water pools have grown in popularity. Saltwater pools still contain chlorine, as they create their chlorine from the salt in the pool by using a device called a chlorine generator. This means pool owners avoid handling and storing chlorine products themselves. For those families wishing to avoid chemicals entirely, there are new systems coming onto the market all the time like the Mineral Pool - which is thought to have therapeutic and health benefits, the EcoSplash which is a natural water purification system developed especially for Tropical pools and Bioniser systems - which replace saltwater systems and use natural mineral ions to purify pool water.

Fibreglass

Pool Shapes and Sizes

Fibreglass pools offer the convenience of no-fuss installation with a high-class end product. Your pool arrives ready to install, with prior site preparation meaning the pool can be completed in only one to two weeks (weather permitting!) Fibreglass pools look good, are easy to clean, are strong and durable, have a smooth surface which parents of small children can prefer

If working with concrete, the size and shape of the pool you choose is dependent only on your budget and imagination. Concrete pools can even be integrated with the design of your home so they look like they are meant to be there and become a part of the design, rather than an ‘add-on’. If considering fibreglass, the variety of shapes and depths available is

growing all the time with the very popular lap-pool and kidney shape pools leading the way. Ultimately, if you are working with a quality pool designer or architect, the sky's the limit as to what you can achieve.

Pool Safety and Legislation All pools in Queensland must be registered on the State Government’s Pool Safety Register and must be fenced and maintained in accordance with the Queensland Development Code. While owning a pool is a luxury, it should be remembered it also comes with a responsibility to ensure the safety of your own family and anyone else who may use it or have access to your home. WHY DID I?

pakmag

Amanda said that the positive response from customers just kept coming, with many finding it very difficult to swim in a regular pool after experiencing a MagnaPool including herself.

T The new phenomenon in swimming There’s a revolution taking place in the backyards of Australia and it’s turning the humble swimming pool into an experience worthy of a day spa. Mineral bathing has long been used to treat physical ailments, soothe skin conditions, and relax and rejuvenate the body but now it is available for your own swimming pool!

ourists travel across the world to bathe in the Dead Sea for its therapeutic benefits. The MagnaPool’s system’s water has similar benefits to bathing in The Dead Sea due to its high mineral content, without the side effects of salt, which can cause dry and irritated skin and the need to shower off after bathing. While the Dead Sea has become a major destination for health research and treatment of people suffering from respiratory problems and skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis, owning a mineral water MagnaPool is like having your own health retreat and mineral bathing destination in your own home! Amanda Spelta General Manager of Placid Pools said around 95 per cent of her customers are now choosing MagnaPools - just from word of mouth. “It is the latest technology in pool industry. A bit like owning a BluRay player with your old salt system being more like owning a VCR!”

“Personally I have become a pool snob since swimming in MagnaPool too. It is very hard to swim in salt chlorinated pools as you can just feel and smell the difference in the structure of the water. The MagnaPool even has the feeling like there are no chemicals - even though there still remains a percentage in the water. Magnesium is a natural flocculant as well so the water has an extra sparkle to it that just looks stunning as well!” Amanda said the best option is to choose a MagnaPool when constructing a new pool - as the system only adds around $1200$1500 to the overall cost of a new swimming pool. However retrofitting kits are also available and many customers are switching their pools over with this option after experiencing a MagnaPool for themselves. Once you have built your MagnaPool, maintenance is also simple and cost effective. Pool water only needs to be topped up with MagnaPool Minerals to keep the pool operating to its optimal standards. The Magnesium Chloride found in MagnaPool minerals are derived from the ocean, with this form of magnesium having significant beneficial properties to assist internal health as well as relax the mind and body. From the very first time you jump into a MagnaPool™ you can feel the difference – The water has a gentle, silky feeling on your skin. There is little or no irritation to your eyes. Your hair won’t need washing to get out that chlorine smell or sticky salt feeling associated with chlorine and saltwater pools. For this reason the MagnaPool is also fantastic for families and especially young children. Many dedicated swim schools are now making the switch as they have found the MagnaPool to be so much gentler than traditional salt chlorinated pools on young skin and sensitive eyes.

Solar Savings We all know that switching to a solar hot water system is the best choice for the environment, but did you know that it can also save you a considerable amount over the years? The average family of four switching from an electric system could expect savings of around $640 per year on their hot water bill. For a family of six, this would increase to around $860 per year.

Keeping cool over the long hot summer STORY Sophie Barrett –Coordinator Sustainability, Cairns Regional Council

It is summer time in the tropics and the heat is on. At our place it’s the time of year when the lure of air-conditioned comfort is hard to resist, even though we know it’ll put our electricity bill through the roof. But what else can you do when the humidity is over ninety per cent for days on end and you’ve already exhausted cool activities like a swim at the Lagoon, a splash at Muddies and a picnic at a shady swimming hole? Council’s Cool Homes – Smart design for the Tropics guide is a great place to look to find out more about how you can keep out the heat and invite the breeze and address problem areas in your home. It is available for download at www.cairns.qld.gov.au/buildings. Here are our top five tips for staying cool this summer, so you can ‘keep your cool’ when the electricity bill arrives: 1. Use fans in combination with your air-con and then set the temperature to 25 degrees. Every degree lower adds 10% to your running costs. 2. Keep your air conditioner in peak condition by cleaning the filters regularly. 3. Open your doors and windows at night to release the heat that has built up during the day. Cool the kid’s rooms using the air conditioning and switch it off after they go to bed or use the sleep function on the unit. 4. Minimise the space you need to cool by closing internal doors or hanging doorway curtains. A smaller space to cool means the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard, which saves you money. 5. Install external shading to shade windows or concrete block walls that get direct sunlight. You can plant trees, tint your windows or even put up a shade sail. Sunshine striking 1m2 of glass creates the same amount of heat as a 500 watt bar heater. 6. Want to find out more about where your $$ are going? Visit your local library and borrow a Home Energy Audit kit. Council have eight kits available. If you would like to share your own tips for keeping out the heat you can post your comments on the Save Energy discussion board on Council’s Green Thumb website. Just search for Cairns Green Thumb and follow the links.

CMD Solar hot water systems are designed and manufactured locally for both domestic and small commercial requirements in Australian conditions. They are a great long term investment and provide efficient, cost-effective hot water and reduced environmental impact. For more information 1300 853 392 or visit cmdsolar.com.au

Why build in timber composite? STORY Rachel Whymark of Kenick Constructions We often get asked why we love timber composite construction so much. It’s not that we don’t use blockwork, we do, and in some cases it is the best material to use, but generally, for the main house, we prefer a well-insulated timber composite. Why? Well among the reasons are: 1. Timber (from accredited sources) is a renewable resource. 2. A well-insulated timber frame wall does not readily absorb the heat and radiate it back into the house like blockwork can (if not shaded or treated with heat reflective paint). 3. We can achieve lots of different facade options and styles by using different cladding materials. 4. You can reduce your home’s ‘footprint’ on your block, particularly important if you have a smaller block, or a narrow one. Along with other passive design principles (such as good airflow) timber composite construction will help keep your home naturally cool, which should equate to lower electricity bills.
