Joey & Kim Anselmo come from a family of bakers and have recently started their own business in Lily Street called Joey’s Bakery. They are also parents to Emilia and Raphael. [1] Tell us about Joey’s Bakery? We make bread products and celebration cakes. Joey has been baking bread his whole life so he works with his mum and dad in the mornings to produce fantastic bread. My passion is cake decorating so I handle the cakes side of the business. We specialise in character cakes such as Minnie Mouse and Peppa Pig. We also make cupcakes with toppers for children to take into school for classroom celebrations. All of our cakes are made fresh to order and we really care about making sure the taste is as good as the look of the cake. [2] What’s the best thing about your business? I love meeting and listening to different people and seeing them walk out happy. We have got to know many of our customers so well that our business feels like a home.

Running a bakery requires long and odd hours. The business trades from 12am to 3pm every weekday so sometimes Joey and I don’t even see each other in the week but it is a living and we love the attention from customers. [4] How do you cope juggling family life with the business? We make sure the kids are involved with us whenever we’re working and our family are a great help. [5] Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about you? We are mad tennis players and that’s how we met.

iPad Addicted?

While technology is a part of modern life the general consensus among experts seems to be that technology is like junk food for children – okay in moderation. However, mental health professionals are seeing an increase in children (especially teens) over-dosing on internet use and they’re calling it Pathological Internet Use. So how do you know when your child’s use of technology is becoming excessive? Here are the signs to look out for: [1] Withdrawal – they become irritable, anxious or sad after the iPad is taken away. [2] Tolerance – if they need to spend longer and longer amounts of time on the iPad to be happy, it’s a sign of addiction. [3] Loss of interest – they are losing interest in their other hobbies such as sport.

Safe New Mobile for Kids Own Fone has launched a fantastic mobile phone for kids that only has pre-programmed numbers in it chosen by you. There’s no texting, internet, apps or camera, so it’s perfect for parents who want to be able to contact their kids but don’t want the worry of associated with smart phones. Each phone has it’s own mobile number with cheap plans available. It’s perfect for emergency use if your child’s soccer practice is running late, ballet has finished early or they need to be picked up from school or miss the bus. A great option for families who are not yet ready to give their kids their own mobile phone but want the convenience of being able to contact them. For more information go to www.ownfone.com.au

www.pakmag.com.au

[4] Lack of control – meltdowns when you take the device off them.

[5] Deception – sneaking the iPad away or hiding while they’re using it are bad signs. [6] Emotional use – emotional eaters deal with difficult emotions by eating, if your child copes with negative emotions by numbing out on the iPad it is a cause for concern. [7] Detaching – performing poorly at school and losing friends could be a sign that your child is detaching from the outside world. If your child is showing any of these signs, it’s time to set some rules and boundaries regarding their use of technology and encourage them to get involved in other activities.

APPS for Tots The Institute of Early Childhood at Macquarie University has found that spending too much time playing the ‘wrong’ kind of computer games could delay a child's development. They discovered that 85 per cent of the apps bought for young children were just “drill and practice” games that don’t require any input from the child. Consequently they have recommended parents choose apps that require children to create something from scratch rather than just rewarding them for practising a task. Examples include Play School Art Maker, My Story, Explain Everything and Creatorverse. www.pakmag.com.au

Troubled Teens By Denise Bewert Troubled Teens provides ideas on how parents can deal with many of the issues that may confront them during their child’s teenage years including school disengagement, self-esteem and substance abuse. Sexts, Texts and Selfies By Susan McLean A comprehensive book on how to keep your children safe in the digital space including managing your digital reputation, cyberbullying, sexts, selfies and why kids are unable to turn off. A must-have up-to-date guide for parents. RRP $29.99

www.pakmag.com.au

All kids tell lies sometimes but it’s important to understand the reason why your child might lie before deciding how to react. Children learn to tell lies from around the age of three and it’s a normal part of their development. It’s usually caused by their desire for their parent’s approval so they tell a lie to avoid getting into trouble. They may also tell a lie when they’re trying to impress or make themselves sound better. Sometimes they may even believe what they’re saying, so to them it’s not a lie. If you catch your child lying try not to get into a battle about it because this can result in them being backed into a corner which can result in them telling even

more lies. The best approach is to begin teaching them about the value of telling the truth and being honest and praising them for honesty. Whatever you do, avoid name calling (e.g. "You are a liar") and try not to overreact. For example, if your child breaks something, rather than asking "Did you break this?" try acknowledging that it’s broken and ask them to help you fix it or tidy up. Set a good example by being honest and teach your child the difference between being dishonest and telling a 'white lie'. And remember, we all bend the truth sometimes!

Abusive Relationships

By Denise Bewert

Teenagers can be affected by abusive relationships so it’s important for parents to be aware of the warning signs. If your daughter has a boyfriend who seems needy, keeps texting many times a day, waits for her to turn up outside of school or work and doesn’t want her to spend time with friends, this should be a cause for concern since they point towards evidence of social and emotional abuse and stalking. If you notice these signs occurring do some research with your daughter on the warning signs and elements of abusive relationships. Discussions with organisations such as the Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (4033 6100) may also provide valuable insights into the different types of abuse and give your daughter some strategies to deal with this kind of situation. South Pacific By Kylie Stokes (Travel Managers) The South Pacific islands are a fantastic destination for family holidays with a range of accommodation options to suit every budget. When choosing a destination you’ll need to decide whether you prefer to stay on a private island where there is only one resort or on a bigger island with more sightseeing, activities and dining options. You can even decide to do a combination of the two. Many resorts offer kid's clubs and if you’re on a budget or just don’t want to have to think about how much money you’re spending on meals, look for all-inclusive or half board packages. School holidays are always extremely busy so book early to

avoid paying high prices. • Fiji – one of the most popular family destinations with a choice of mainland hotels or picturesque islands. Whether you want to snorkel around the colourful coral gardens, visit a local village, tee off at a championship golf course, there is something for everyone. • Vanuatu – Most resorts in Vanuatu are child friendly but there are no kid’s clubs or TV in most places. While you’re there definitely make the trip to Tanna Island to visit the active volcano (not recommended for very young children). • New Caledonia – often known as the St Tropez of the Pacific, the French influence is apparent in the many waterfront restaurants and cafes. • Samoa – swim in crystal clear inland waterholes and lagoons and experience authentic Polynesian culture. • Cook Islands – perfect for a beach holiday with shallow lagoons and pristine beaches. • Tahiti – a little further away but well worth the extra journey with its colourful history and breathtaking scenery. • South Pacific Cruise – Having trouble deciding where to go? Cruising is a fantastic option for families on a budget. Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean International have itineraries to suit every family, with fly cruise packages starting in Hawaii and cruises that depart from Australia.
