SLING Safety Following a recent inquest where a baby sling was found to be a factor in a three-week old baby’s death, authorities are developing a campaign to educate parents about how to use baby slings safely. The key tips are: • Keep your baby’s face uncovered (especially the nose and mouth) • Avoid your baby being curled in a ‘C’ position with their chin against their chest • Be extra careful about using slings with premature or low weight babies, or those with a cold • Reposition your baby after breastfeeding to make sure their airways are clear • Check on them regularly

As far as Freddy was concerned the results spoke for themselves – by the time he was ready for school he had gone from a scared little boy challenged by social environments and change to his routine to a confident young man who easily handled the transition to big school. Stages NEW Books Twins A Practical Guide to Parenting Multiples from Conception to School by Katrina Bowman and Louise Ryan A comprehensive reference book that explains medical jargon, survival tips and everything in between.

Unfortunately bullying can be common amongst children and if they’re scared of a bully at school it may cause them to want to avoid going to school altogether. So how can you help them cope?

Funny and informative, this is a must-have for any new parents of twins. RRP $32.99

Many young people think that ‘sexting’ (a mix of ‘sex’ and ‘texting’) is innocent flirting but there are legal implications to sexting that they may not be aware of. Some young girls make the mistake of sending nude, semi-nude or sexy pictures of themselves to boys who flatter them by saying, “they want to see more of them because they are so beautiful.” However, these boys may not be aware that they are actually committing a criminal offence if they keep indecent images of people under the age of 18 on their phones. In fact, they could be charged with child pornography and the police may seize and

retain their phones (as well as the phones of any other young people the images have been sent to). If you are aware of sexting occurring amongst teenagers that you know, I would recommend informing the school administrative staff so that they can educate all of their students about the serious legal, social and emotional ramifications. www.pakmag.com.au

Some things just don’t mix and kids and glass are one of them. So, if you’re concerned about exuberant kids running through windows or glass doors, you can reduce the risk with safety window film. It can be applied to any glass surface, acting as a membrane that holds the broken glass together if an accident occurs. So instead of sharp shards flying out from a breakage the film holds the shattered pieces securely in place. It is already a requirement for pre-schools and schools. Snow Holidays By Kylie Stokes (Travel Managers) A family snow holiday can be the perfect combination of activity and relaxation with days spent hitting the slopes on skis or snowboards followed by snuggling up in front of an open fire at night. And for those who are not skiers there’s plenty of other activities to keep you busy including snowmobile tours, snowshoeing and ice-skating. There are many different destinations to choose from: Northern Hemisphere Winter (November-April) • America - wide choice of mountains and ski resort to choose from with the added bonus of being able to stop in LA to visit Disneyland. • Canada – spectacular mountain scenery and amazing skiing and snowboarding terrain suitable for all levels of ability. • Europe – great skiing combined with a cultural experience available in Italy, Switzerland, Austria and France. • Japan – closer to home and allows you to combine a cultural experience with your ski holiday. Southern Hemisphere Winter (June-October) • Australia – perfect if you only have a limited amount of time with the choice of resorts in New South Wales or Victoria. • New Zealand – great value with ski resorts on both the North and South Islands although the South offers more ski field choices. Ski Tips • Book early to take advantage of early bird specials. • Pre-book ski school for your kids, especially during school holidays or Christmas. • Hire your clothing and include it in the cost of your holiday. • Look for family friendly options including free deals. • Plan for some non-ski days and try other activities. • Travel insurance - don’t leave home without it! Always check that your policy includes snow sports as some policies don’t automatically cover this.

Cairns teaches the sport of pole dancing to people of all ages, with a sole focus on fitness, health and having fun. Classes are available for a range of fitness and experience levels, from beginners through to the most advanced. Owner and instructor Monica Reid says pole classes help children get active without realising they’re exercising. “It gets them physically and mentally involved in a fun environment that gets them fit and strong and doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “They make friends with the other children in the class and you see their selfconfidence sky rocket as they master new tricks and spins.” In these classes, children are taught basic spins, climbs and pole sits, as well as how to safely and correctly do handstands, backbends and cartwheels. Monica says each class also involves cardio, core strength and flexibility activities to maximise their performance on the pole. “We

Is your cat at risk from Feline Aids? Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a viral infection that attacks the immune system of cats. Despite a vaccine being available, FIV is still spreading rapidly throughout our cat population worldwide. In Australia, studies show that between 14-29 per cent of cats are infected.
