THE MOMENTS OF
Motherhood
In the day-to-day of motherhood, it’s all too easy to fall into the mindset that the true delight of parenting lies only in the big moments of our lives. We awake every morning, perhaps after not getting much sleep at all - the baby having woken every hour for a feed. The toilet-training toddler may have wet the bed, requiring a 3am bed change - but still, we fall out of bed as the alarm sounds and trudge our way forward into our day. It can seem monotonous. Especially when stuck smack bang in the middle of those early, sleep-deprived years. If you feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water, it can be hard to see the joy in moments. The joy that comes from the very existence of the little souls that call you mum. Of course we are all thankful for the blessing of motherhood. But there are days we all know too well, when sometimes, for a second, you reminisce of an easier time, before someone relied on you for absolutely everything. It’s a heavy weight to bear and modern society does not make the challenge of parenthood any easier. As mums, we can be our own biggest enemies - putting the most pressure
8

on ourselves to be perfect in every aspect of our lives.
The biggest challenge undoubtedly of modern motherhood is meeting the demands of society and our own expectations. Whether you choose to stay home, or you choose to return to work, the one thing you can be certain of is that someone will have an opinion that your choice is the wrong one. But in the eyes of our children, we are perfection from the very beginning. It is what we do along the way that may swing the pendulum one way or another. As working mums, we chide ourselves for going to work and putting the kids in day care. If we choose to stay at home, others judge us for being ‘lazy’ or ‘bludging’ or we somehow feel our children aren’t getting the experiences they deserve through early childhood education. There is no right or wrong. No handbook that comes with motherhood. We all make it up as we go along, fumbling our way through. If we’re lucky, we may have a network of family and friends to rely on for advice and support, perhaps an awesome mum of our own to look up to. Others are not so lucky and do the hard yards alone.
There is nothing that can prepare you for how all-encompassing motherhood is. Sure, when we are expecting our first child, we all have a vague idea that this new little person will rely on us for their care and wellbeing, but until you hold that baby in your arms, there’s no way of knowing just how finite that responsibility feels. There’s no ‘off-duty’, no downtime, no holidays. It is the toughest job in the world but we all do it gladly. The way we live our lives in this modern world means we are constantly on public display - through social media and technology - whether we mean to or not, we immerse ourselves in our smart phones and it is a constant battle to remind ourselves to be present in the here and now. Any grandparent or parent of a teenager will tell you how quickly children grow - in the blink of an eye but during those early sleepless nights, nappy changes and sick toddlers, it may feel like it will go on forever. It is all too easy to become wrapped up in goals for the future, plans for a better life than the one you are living now but for our children, all they care about is the ‘now’. Whether you

Cover Profile pakmag
COVER PROFILE
‘Mum on a Mission’ Owner of ipSeity Beauty & Hair Studio, Annalisa Siefken describes herself as ‘an ordinary girl living an extraordinary life’. As a business owner, wife, and mum to Kyius, she has also recently launched her fourth business venture - a new product line focusing on paraben and sulphate free shampoo and conditioners and soy candles, BARE Movement.
Annalisa Siefken , what's your story? I see the beauty in all things. I was born and raised in Cairns with a traditional Italian upbringing and have travelled. I love all things life, health, wellness, hair, beauty and fashion! I believe in order to achieve one must strive - the sky's the limit! Nothing gets handed to you in life, if you want something bad enough, you will always find a way. After losing people close to me who tried hard to live I made a decision to live my life to the full. Travel opened my eyes at a young age and after having a difficult pregnancy and a sick baby I fell into the health and wellness lifestyle. I see the difference it can make to people’s lives and I endeavour to encourage that as much as possible. Eight years on in business with my hair studio (18 years in the industry) and I still love helping others express their soul through style - be it from a style cut, creative colour, my skin care business Nucerity International, an uplifting quote on my health and wellness page at InsideOut on Facebook and now my new natural range of shampoos and conditioners. I want to help inspire others to be themselves, to seek out the individual and find happiness. If we were sitting here a year from now celebrating what a great year it's been for you, what did you achieve? Balance! I know, I know, that word is totally overused and undervalued but being a mum and an entrepreneur, you need balance in order to achieve. I will have travelled to some amazing places with the two men in my life, BARE Movement will have taken off, my Skincerity business will have taken me to Vegas and other places, ipSEITY will be managed by
a talented stylist and I will continue helping others achieve a beautiful life InsideOut. When have you been most satisfied in your life? It’s the simple things for me. Sunday mornings when I wake up with my family and know that it's OUR TIME is when I'm most satisfied. Sitting on the beach and soaking up nature with my family is where I love to be. Who is your role model and why? This may sound cliché but I look up to anyone that is fulfilling their dreams. I like to surround myself with likeminded individuals, those who see the true value in life and wake up each day being the best version of themselves. My father has always been a great role model. He is always looking to improve, to grow, all while being an authentic being. Others such as Oprah, Richard Branson, Audrey Hepburn, Angelina Jolie, Paul Walker. They all achieve great lives by helping others along the way! What’s the point in reaching the top if you’re all alone right!? Tell us about an accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career. Starting my business and believing in myself is a big one. Being nominated for Cairns Business Women of the Year a few years back was wonderful. That journey opened my eyes to the many talented women we have in our region and that we are not alone! Walking away with the Jean Skea Award was unexpected and incredibly rewarding. What's your mummy superpower? Ahhhhh I’m yet to master this one! Maybe multitasking and providing a healthy Paleo inspired lifestyle.
Food is so important to me. My little boy was born with severe allergies and I've worked very hard on healing his gut over the years. I love that he enjoys healthy snacks! What is your top tip for managing family and work? Self-care! I believe in order to manage it all you need to look after number one first, and that is you. I have recently discovered Qigong and practice with Rhyn Nasser weekly to work on balance. Quietening the mind can be difficult when you live such a full life, but when you can practice this, the rest just falls into place. Between Qigong and working out at Fitness Form and Function it gives me time to look after myself. What do you hope your son learns from you? I'd love for Kyius to grow up believing in himself. I strive to raise him to be the best version of himself, to have the confidence to make the best choices and see the world through the eyes of a child at all stages in life. What do you hope your son remembers you for? If I could leave a legacy I would want it to be that I gave life a good go! When things get tough, it's important to hold space around that and believe that things will change. After all, change is the one constant in this life. What has surprised you the most about being a parent? The depth of love! Nothing can prepare you for the late nights, lack of sleep, the motivation to make them better and the love that exists between you. Being a parent is my greatest achievement to date. Sharing the load with my husband is truly magic as well.

WILLS AND ESTATE
It’s something that no mum or dad wants to consider but ultimately part of being a parent is considering - and planning for - what could happen to your family in the event of your death. Estate planning is the process by which an individual or family arranges for the transfer of assets after death. If you have young children, you may have considered who you would like to take care of them in the event you and your spouse (or partner) die before they reach adulthood. This is known as guardianship and can be detailed as part of a Will. A Will is a legal document that states, amongst other things, how the deceased person's belongings are to be distributed after their death. The Executor of the Will is responsible for distributing the person's assets to the people named in the Will. This happens after any debts are paid. If the person has not left a Will, the estate is shared under a formula set by law. With family structures now more complex than ever, the need to ensure your affairs are in good order and reflect your changing family and asset situation is crucial. Higher divorce rates, blended families and de-facto relationships increase the number of potential claimants and create scope for conflict. Whenever a death occurs it is a trying and emotional time. Courts are increasingly dealing with disputes that individuals may never have expected - after all, we all cross our fingers and hope the ‘It won’t happen to me’ rule will apply. However, the volatile mix of family, emotion and money can affect even the closest of families in the event of an unexpected death. Guardianship Appointing a guardian in your Will may assist to avoid disputes among
family members as your intentions will be made clear, however it is worth keeping in mind that it is not binding and the Family Court still has overriding powers to appoint or remove a guardian should it be in the best interest of the child. It is therefore worthwhile taking the time to discuss your intentions with family and friends when naming a guardian in your Will and considering vital factors regarding your nomination such as : • Is the person in question prepared to accept the long-term responsibility of becoming your child or children’s legal guardian? • Are they of a similar age to you? • Do they understand your views on how you wish your child/children to be raised? • How will you provide financially in your Will for the welfare, education and advancement of your child/ children and who will manage these finances in the best interests of your child/children? • Would your children have to be relocated or would they be able to stay in the family home? Appointing an Executor The executor or administrator is responsible for administering the deceased estate pursuant to legal requirements and in accordance with the deceased's wishes. Beneficiaries are those people who share in the estate and are usually named in the will – if no Will exists, they are usually the deceased person's next of kin. The executor effectively steps into the shoes of the deceased person and winds up their personal affairs so it
should be someone who you trust and are confident can handle the role. Estate planning is an area of law that appears simple but is not, even for people with modest assets. For those with complex estates, there is an increased risk of things going awry. Assets that are not held personally or are not dealt with by one's Will - particularly trusts, superannuation, insurance and joint holdings - will require special consideration to ensure they are distributed as intended. While the most basic of Estate Plans will consider your dependents in the event of your death, a comprehensive plan would also include current lifestyle requirements, retirement plans, business arrangements, your tax position and even take into account any possible future events such as divorce, health scares or family disputes as well as ensuring assets go exactly where you wish them to go. Planning your estate Will offer peace of mind that your loved ones will be taken care of in the event of your death. As parents we would never dream of leaving our children’s futures in the hands of family members without having a say, however that may be what many of us are inadvertently doing by not thinking about our Estates. For advice and information on how to create a legal will, visit www.moneysmart.gov.au or contact the Wills and Estates team at MacDonnells Law.

NIGHT TERRORS
Health
Story Dr Claire Stewart Night terrors, which affect one in 20 young children, are absolutely horrible for parents to watch but kids don’t normally remember them and it is something they will usually outgrow. Night terrors normally occur in the first few hours of sleep at night when your child is in the deepest part of sleep. It often starts with a loud scream and they look very scared with fast breathing and a fast heart rate. Some kids may throw their arms and legs around in bed while others get up and run around as though being chased. Upsettingly, although their eyes may be open, during a night terror your child will not recognise you and they
cannot be comforted. The whole episode usually lasts between five and 10 minutes. If your child is having a night terror, do your very best to stay calm and don’t try to touch them or wake them unless they are in danger of hurting themselves as this tends to make things worse. Although they look absolutely terrified during the episode, night terrors are mostly upsetting for parents as your child won’t remember it in the morning. Night terrors occur in normal healthy children and are not a sign of any psychological or developmental problems. They can however be more frequent if your child is unwell with a fever, is very worried about something or is overtired. Having a regular bedtime and a good sleep routine can also help.
ENERGY IS LIFE
Energy is wellness.
Energy builds immunity. Energy is life.
The world functions on energy. There is energy in all matter. Our bodies are made of millions of cells that need to interact with each other. To function at our potential our bodies need to be in top condition. Our cells need to be fed correctly and consistently and work in harmony. A lack of energy compromises our ability to achieve what we wish and leads to fatigue, depression, disease and death. At death all energy STOPS. The body produces energy in the form of ATP in our cells and stores unused energy in fat and muscle tissue. To produce ATP the body needs good regular food intake, good digestion, rest, exercise, enjoyment and inner peace. ATP is produced by a
process called the Krebs Cycle. The essential nutrients this cycle requires are protein, good fats, carbohydrates, essential minerals such as Zinc, Magnesium, Folic Acid, B vitamins and C. Good digestion is most important. A lack of stomach acid compromises protein breakdown into amino acids. A lack of enzymes and insulin from the pancreas compromises our carbohydrate and fat digestion. Food and digestion produce the nutrients required by our cells to produce ATP. Let me ask this question? If you spent money on buying the car of your dreams you would follow the maker’s rules completely? You would use the right fuel, wash it and have it serviced
regularly. Would you put water in the petrol tank? Would you ignore the red oil warning light or the radiator light? We need to look after our bodies in the same manner. The exact manual to follow is different for each of us. We all require differing amounts of food & nutrients, exercise and rest. If you have energy and are feeling well you will be able to deal with your daily tasks and challenges easily. Eat well, take time to digest your food, exercise, do what you enjoy as often as possible and increase peace and balance in your life. Energy is wellness. Energy builds immunity. Energy is life. Well Being
HUGS… keeping you healthy! Oxytocin. This amazing hormone is a critical part of our survival toolkit with an impressive capacity for regeneration and a skill set that outdoes everyone from Alicia Keyes to Zig Ziglar. Most of you will know Oxytocin as the childbirth hormone. Beyond this, Oxytocin can make everyone’s life better, every single day of your life. Released through touch, eye contact, intimacy, singing, dancing, creative endeavour, dining with friends and even Facebook interactions, Oxytocin has many positive effects. Oxytocin will improve your health and your desire to participate in healthy and fun activities and nature has kindly provided a renewable dispenser for you to optimise.
Simone Kay *The advice in this article is of a general nature only and is not intended to be prescriptive or used as a recommendation. For all your health and fitness needs please consult with a suitably qualified and experienced professional.
As parents, it’s easy to start this cycle of oxytocin right from birth with plenty of skin to skin contact for a newborn. Along with the benefits of improved body awareness (proprioception) the contact and subsequent hormone release supports bonding and feelings of safety and social connection.
As children get older and the parenting role is continuously re-defined, hugs and hand holding are great ways to get a daily dose and encouraging activities such as dancing, singing and watching good movies together can help to build those family bonds. With older children and adult friends you can stimulate the oxytocin release in social environments through sharing meals with family or friends, or exercising or playing together. Being healthy and fit is not about simply having a gym membership and turning up to do the same thing three to four times a week. Being healthy involves participation in healthy movement pursuits and games that release hormones into the blood stream, simplifying the process of making good choices and enhancing the quality of life without really trying. Learn more about fun ways to get the Oxytocin going at Train for LIFE!, 8/261 McCormack Street, Manunda. Family training options available during May - come in and see us today or call 0411 027 883. Simone is a Personal Trainer of 10 years, Pilates Coach and the creator of Mumbalates. Simone specialises in movement for health and fitness.
DEALING WITH 'I'M TOO FAT' Recently I have been mentoring young people aged eight to 16 who have expressed they feel they are ‘too fat’ and that they are ‘not good enough’. I praise parents for recognising they need some positive reinforcement. Young people need to hear and realise they ARE ‘good enough’ and they are beautiful just the way they are. It takes me back to when I was in primary school: I compared my legs to my sister and I came to the conclusion that I was fat and not good enough. This false conclusion led me to fighting with anorexia in my teens and compulsive eating in my early twenties. I struggled for over a decade with low self-esteem and self-image. Then I learned about three strategies to a healthy body image and now share these with the people I mentor:

MAY 2015 www.pakmag.com.au
1. Focus on your awesomeness Putting a focus on what makes you YOU takes the focus off the body and onto other positive things. How? Create a collage or journal by writing, drawing or cutting out pictures of your interests, achievements, passions, personality, strengths, etc. This allows you to visualise how amazing you are and that you ARE unique and special. Learning to accept yourself helps you overcome comparison. 2. Limit viewing of negative imagery What you expose your mind to determines how you feel. Examples of negative imagery are tabloid magazines, extreme fitness models on Instagram and YouTube Channels. Instead, saturate your mind in positivity. Look at things like positive cards, posters, books and inspirational quotes on self-acceptance. Soak your mind in positive thoughts. Say: “I love who I am!”
3. Understand different body types When you are aware that each body is born as a certain ‘type’, it gives you the opportunity to accept yours. Embrace that no body type is better than the other. Discuss what fit and healthy means: It doesn’t mean how you look, it means looking after your body. Switch your focus from comparison to self-acceptance. You’ll be a happier and more confident person! WHAT MUMS NEED For first time mums, or those welcoming a new addition and returning to the newborn stage after several years out of the ‘baby years’, the sheer amount of products available for babies and newborns can be overwhelming. Many new parents can feel it is difficult to strike a balance between feeling prepared with everything they may need or totally overdoing it and buying every baby product ever invented! After all, how many of us actually want to hide those gorgeous teeny baby feet with shoes before it’s absolutely necessary? It is important to remember there are some things that you absolutely will need, but others that can wait until baby is here and you know you will need them. A prime example is breastfeeding suppliers or a breast pump - while the majority of women want and plan to breastfeed, in some cases it may not always be possible and that expensive breast pump may sit in the cupboard unused. Vice versa, if you purchase bottles and sterlising supplies your baby may take to breastfeeding like a champ and you may find you do not need them for some time. Most experienced mums will tell you about all the things they were told they HAD to buy or couldn’t resist buying but in fact newborns don’t NEED a great deal. Clothing in particular is a grey area for most new mums. When first discovering you are expecting the urge to run out and buy a number of adorable outfits for baby is tempting, however many experienced mums will tell you how many of those gorgeous outfits ended up packed away due to bub growing out of them all to fast or not having the chance to wear them at all. To help separate what are the ‘needs’ from the ‘wants’, with the help of retailer Baby Bunting we’ve come up with a list of items that Parents-to-be
can take with them when shopping for the new arrival. Talking to an expert in the field can also be helpful when faced with making such extensive purchases and Baby Bunting is Australia’s largest nursery retailer and one-stop baby shop. Visit www. babybunting.com.au to shop online or their bricks and mortar store at Shop 2C, 103 Duckworth St Townsville. FOR THE NURSERY Must have: • cot or bassinet • mattress, mattress protector and sheets • baby sleeping bags / swaddles or blankets • baby monitor • disposable nappies or modern cloth nappies • nappy sacks and wipes Nice to have: • change table and mat • dresser or drawers, wardrobe and hangers • nappy stacker (if using cloth nappies) • nightlight and nursing chair FOR OUT AND ABOUT Must haves: • pram, stroller, sling or baby carrier • rear-facing capsule (0-6 months) or convertible car seat (approx 0-4/6 years) • nappy bag (with the essentials) Nice to have: • pram blanket • pram rain cover / UV cover / mosquito cover • pram liner • car window shade • rearward facing mirror • portacot
FOR BATH TIME Must have: • baby bath / bath support • baby nail scissors, brush or comb • baby towels (with hoods) • sponge and face cloth • baby toiletries Nice to have: • non-slip bath mat • bath thermometer • nappy cream NURSING AND FEEDING Breastfeeding must have: • nursing bras • nursing top • nipple cream Breastfeeding nice to have: • breast feeding cover • breast pads • breastfeeding support pillow • breast pump • breast milk storage bags and bottles • steriliser • soothers / dummies Bottle Feeding must have: • bottles and teats • formula • steriliser • bottle brush • bottle warmer • bottle carrier • bibs WARDROBE Must have: • newborn clothing starter set in 0000 and 000 • bodysuits / sleep suits in 0000 and 000 • singlets • sun hat • socks (or bodysuits with feet)

FAMILY FESTIVAL WITH A DIFFERENCE Bring your family and friends along to the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal on Sunday May 31 for the Cairns ECOfiesta - a fun, free day out with a difference. Hosted by Cairns Regional Council and James Cook University, the inaugural Cairns ECOfiesta weaves environment, community and economy into a day of fun, friendship and eco-inspiration. “ECOfiesta is a free community festival that celebrates and showcases our unique natural environment, tropical lifestyle and green economy,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “It combines all the usual festival favourites of live music, fine food and free entertainment with a huge variety of sustainable living stalls, displays and activities. It’s sure to be a great day out and a fun way to connect with those who are proving that we really can achieve more with less by living sustainably.” Inside the Cruise Liner Terminal from 10am to 3pm, festival-goers can see the ECOthreads fashion shows,
the ECOdrive car show, ECOeats cooking shows and explore over 80 stalls from local community and environmental groups including Far North Queensland Wildlife Rescue, Bungalow Community Gardens and the Alternative Technology Association. “All of the ECOfiesta exhibitors offer services and products that can help families save on their energy and water bills, reduce waste and generally make the most of our tropical lifestyle,” Cr Manning said. Festival food will showcase locally grown, in-season produce to inspire your culinary creativity and keep you energized throughout the day. Festival-goers can enjoy a jampacked line-up of live music on the waterfront stage throughout the day, with performances from great local acts including Leanne Tennant, Bosko and Honey, Secret Tuesdays and the Formidable Vegetable Sound System.

CARNIVALE FUN
for all the family Family fun is big on the agenda at this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale, a 10-day extravaganza showcasing the best of Tropical North Queensland’s lifestyle and produce. The pretty party town is just one hour’s drive up the scenic Cook Highway coastal road from Cairns, ensuring there won’t be too many “are we there yets?” from the back seat. The 21st Carnivale runs from May 22 to 31 with food demonstrations, sampling of local produce and a range of family friendly events devoted to arts, health, sports, fun and frivolity. The fun kicks off with the Macrossan Street parade, on May 22. It’s an annual Carnivale highlight where everyone gets in the party mood with carnivale dress to watch the floats and performers. Food stalls and fun fair rides will be in full swing at the Market Park and, of course, the parade ends with a big bang – the fireworks that light up the Port Douglas sky. Saturday May 23 is Family Beach Day, offering a choice of fun sporting events, from novice outrigger canoeing regatta, beach cricket and tennis, and dance and gymnastic displays. A dedicated Kids Fun Zone will host the legendary sandcastle building competition, treasure hunt and tug-o-war. And there’ll be plenty of food stalls too. The McDonald’s Major Stage Show on Four Mile Beach will see all the McDonald’s characters performing
on the beach. There will also be buskers, art happenings, pony rides, street theatre performers, a skydiving display and lolly drop from the GBR Sky Diving Helicopter. A must see will be the jousting and Yabusame Japanese horseback archery tournament, a colourful, exciting spectacle that thrilled viewers when it made its Australian debut last year. Carnivale General Manager, Roy Weavers, says the festival caters for all demographics including events for families, which was an important consideration in the planning stage. “We want families to come to Port and have a ball so we have ensured there is lots for them to experience and enjoy with free entry or very small fees to most events,” he said. “This year’s Carnivale will be fantastic for everyone. We have the World Motorised Cooler Championships, Jansz Longest Lunch, Seafood Extravaganza, the Radiant Life Festival and, of course, the Backyard Games, to name just a few events.” The Backyard Games on Sunday May 24 will take you straight back to your own childhood, with tug-o-wars, quoits, target putting and lots more, including Giant Jenga (wood block tower), Bocce and the tricky “Feed da
Goat”, which has been adapted for all footy codes. The sporting arena for this backyard multi-Games tournament will be the Reef Marina. This is where the inaugural World Racing Motorised Cooler championships will take place. The arena will be taped off with a gold coin donation securing entry and all games will be free to play. Mr Weavers says each game will have its own umpire, with winners in both adult and children’s categories being presented with trophies at the close of play. The two-day Radiant Life Festival is a new event to be held on May 28 and 29 at the iconic Sugar Wharf and adjacent grass area. Catch the breeze straight off the sea as you soak up the bazaar-type atmosphere and view the health, well-being and alternative lifestyle products on display. There will be inspiring talks, presentations and interactive workshops, as well as demonstrations, including yoga, healthy cooking, delicious and healthy food offerings and live entertainment, all whilst you relax on the grass and enjoy the seafront ambience. And a dedicated children's area will provide lots of fun with face painting and circus toys. For more information visit website www.carnivale.com.au

SIMPLE EGGS BENEDICT INGREDIENTS 4-6 English Muffins, cut in half 4-6 slices of thick cut bacon 4-6 eggs 1 jar of pre-bought hollandaise sauce
LIMONCELLO AND PROSECCO COOLER
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Put your glasses in the freezer if possible, or at least the fridge so that they are cold. 2) Put the raspberries on a plate; separated from each other and place in the freezer at least 15 minutes before serving time. 3) Gently 'smush' a couple of small mint leaves and add to each glass along with 5-6 of the frozen raspberry ice cubes. Add limoncello or premix lemon cordial, then the sparkling wine or mineral water.
1) Preheat oven to 200ยบ C. Spray a muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. 2) Place bacon on a fully rimmed baking sheet (edges on all four sides) that has been topped with a cooling rack. Bake for 15-20 minutes. 3) Add 2 tablespoons of water to each indention of muffin tin. Crack an egg into each individual indention, taking care not to break the yolk of the egg. Place in the oven along with the bacon the last 9-10 minutes of cooking. 4) Place English muffins on another baking sheet. Spread with butter and place in oven at the same time as adding eggs. 5) As your bacon, eggs, and muffins are baking, prepare your hollandaise sauce. Pour into a serving container. 6) To assemble Eggs Benedict, place English Muffins on each plate, top with one slice of bacon that has been folded in half to fit on the English Muffin. Using a silicon spatula, gently remove a poached egg from the muffin tin, draining on a thick kitchen towel before placing on top of the bacon. 7) Drizzle with hollandaise sauce and serve warm.

There’s no doubt about it - when looking to sell your home it is imperative that it looks the best it possibly can!
cabinetry and cutting edge furniture, likewise traditional or antique furniture would not sit comfortably in a modern, architecturally-designed home.
As a result of a competitive market, the industry of real estate and property styling is booming. In what may be partly due to the onslaught of renovation and interior design television shows gracing our screens, property owners are starting to realise that ensuring a home looks the best it possibly can prior to putting it on the market will not only assist with a timely sale, it could also increase the final sale price substantially.
Put yourself in the buyer's shoes and find a starting point. Chances are, whatever first drew you to the house will be a selling point for buyers now. Work to make the most of this feature and follow our handy styling tips to prepare for a successful sale.
Hiring a professional to cast their eye over and style a home may be well out of reach for the majority of us, but the good news is there are a number of things you can do yourself to increase the desirability of your home.

‘Styling’ a space for sale is not about throwing out all your old furniture and replacing it with new or rented belongings. Instead it is about refining, neutralising, decluttering and de-personalising the space. Professionals are often better placed to undertake this process as they do not have the emotional attachment to the home as the owners obviously will. However, it is definitely possible to step back and pass a critical eye over your space. Successful styling goes back to basics, considering the best way in which a home, may be used. Potential buyers are not sold on a house but a lifestyle. If your home can evoke emotion in a buyer - making them fall in love with your home so they can see themselves living there - you are just one step away from a sale! Decorating it to resemble something from a magazine or a reality renovation show may not necessarily be what buyers are looking for. A common misconception about property styling is that a home needs to be ‘pretty’ to attract the highest price. The house should instead be styled in a way that sits comfortably with the architecture and design of the home. There is no point trying to style a Queenslander with high gloss
10 styling tips to sell your home: 1. Neutralise rooms – strip the house of clutter, personal items and anything that interferes with buyers imagining themselves living there. 2. Ensure furniture and soft furnishings are in keeping with the property's architecture. 3. Ensure all furniture is scaled to fit spaces – smaller if the room is on the small side (a double bed instead of a king size), bigger if it's cavernous. 4. Keep spaces as open as possible. Don't back a lounge against a doorway and don't push furniture against a wall just to create roominess. Living spaces should centre around a conversation hub - perhaps with a rug to ‘ground’ the space. 5. Add pops of colour – fresh flowers on the table for open homes, throws draped over lounge suites, bright rugs or artwork can transform a room. 6. Invest in new accessories – cushions, throws and rugs can enliven a previously dull space. 7. Give the house a fresh look and smell – a coat of paint and a high pressure clean externally is a great idea. Give GroutPro a call! 8. Keep the driveway clear of cars - you never know when potential buyers may be driving past. 9. Hire a professional who isn't too close to the property and can introduce a dispassionate eye; one who knows the market you're styling for. Your real estate agent should be able to give you some pointers. 10. Enter the house as if you're a buyer not a seller and use this as a guide in what needs to go and what can stay.

So this Mother’s Day, why not bring the spa to Mum, by creating a simple ‘diy pamper pack’?
Mother’s Day
DIY PAMPER PACK By Sofie Buchholz
The hustle and bustle of daily life often leaves little room for parents to consider themselves. Mums particularly often place personal pampering last on the ‘to do list’. What day spa is open at 9pm when everyone is in bed and you have a moment to finally think about yourself?
The pamper pack featured has been made with relaxation in mind. A bath with some homemade bath salts will be sure to impress this Mother’s Day.
This Mother’s Day why not bring the spa to Mum by creating a simple ‘DIY Pamper Pack’? Consider making some simple homemade products and combine them with some inexpensive store bought products so mum can pamper herself at home. Your pamper pack could be made up of items specifically needed for a facial, pedicure or a general pack for relaxation. It is a great way for kids to be involved in the making of a gift. A homemade Mother’s Day gift is always a winner.
1/3 cup bicarbonate of soda
What you will need: 2 cups rock or sea salt 1 cup Epsom salts Few drops of essential oil Few drops of food colouring (optional) Airtight jar for storage In a small bowl measure out and combine rock salt, Epsom salts and bicarbonate of soda together. Add your chosen essential oil for fragrance and a few drops of food colouring if you wish to colour the bath salts. Stir all together and place into your chosen jar for storage and presentation.
Hint: When packaging up your ‘DIY Pamper Pack’ consider placing all items in a large jar tied with a simple ribbon. A jar of goodies is very much still on trend. Alternatively, the pamper pack could be set up ready in the bathroom for mum to enjoy straight away. For a more traditional pamper pack look, consider using a cardboard box or bag or a basket. If you wish to cover your ‘DIY Pamper Pack’ in cellophane consider buying a piece by the metre from a local florist. The cellophane quality is better and it will give your pamper pack a more professional finish.

PETS NEED DENTAL CARE TOO! Oral disease is one of the most common health problems treated in pets, with 80% of dogs and 70% of cats displaying signs of gum disease by the time they are three. All pets are at risk of developing dental problems, although small dog breeds and some breeds of cats are more likely to develop dental disease as their teeth are often overcrowded. Poor oral health doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth, it can put your pet’s health at risk and impact their quality of life. Oral disease begins with a buildup of bacteria in the pet’s mouth. This bacteria combined with saliva and food debris between the teeth and gums causes plaque to form on the tooth surface. As the bacteria grow in the plaque and calcium salts are deposited, this plaque turns to tartar. If the tartar isn’t removed from the teeth, pockets of pus may appear along the gum line and further separate the teeth from the gum, which allows more food and bacteria to accumulate. Without treatment, this plaque and tartar build up may cause irreversible periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes red and swollen gums. The gums often recede and bleeding is common. Bone destruction and tooth loss combined with severe pain and infection is often seen at this stage. Pets with dental disease can suffer from other illnesses when the bacteria from infected teeth and gums enters the bloodstream. The bacteria travels throughout the body, negatively
impacting vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver and lungs. Signs of irreversible dental disease • Bad Breath. • Yellow/brown crust around gums and teeth. • Pain when eating. • Pawing at the mouth. • Change in chewing and/or eating habits. • Loose, cracked and worn teeth. • Subdued behaviour. • Excessive drooling. Once your pet displays these signs, serious dental disease is likely to be present. Don’t wait for the signs to appear, ensure your pet has a regular yearly dental check-up with your veterinarian. What can we do to prevent oral disease? Before we domesticated the family pooch and puss they were hunting animals. Tearing at carcasses no doubt kept their teeth cleaner than today’s tinned and dry food. So what can we do to prevent oral disease in our pets? Preventative dental care is best started when the tooth surface is
clean. Beginning some form of dental care when your pet is a puppy or kitten is ideal but after a dental scale and polish is the next best thing. There are an abundance of products on the market, such as dental water additives, dental diets, toothbrushes and pastes, toys and chews etc. which can help you maintain your pet’s oral health. We recommend discussing your pet’s dental health with your veterinarian before deciding on a particular product. During a preventative dental care examination your veterinarian will assess your pet’s oral health and may recommend treatment to take care of any dental problems which may be present. They will also be able to recommend a homecare plan based on your circumstances and pet’s needs. Don’t risk dental disease, tooth loss and other serious health problems. Schedule a dental health examination at any of our three conveniently located clinics today.

TIME FOR A LAUGH
Baby Snake: Mummy, are we poisonous? Mother Snake: Yes, son. Why? Baby Snake: I just bit my tongue!
What my Mother taught me! My mother taught me RELIGION. "You'd better pray that will come out of the carpet." My mother taught me TIME TRAVEL. "If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!" My mother taught me FORESIGHT. "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident." My mother taught me IRONY. "Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about." My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM. "Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!" My mother taught me about WEATHER. "This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it." My mother taught me about ENVY. "There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do." My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION. "Just wait until we get home." My mother taught me about RECEIVING. "You are going to get it when you get home!" My mother taught me HUMOUR. "When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me." My mother taught me WISDOM. "When you get to be my age, you'll understand." My mother taught me about JUSTICE. "One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you"
What did the digital clock say to its mother? “Look, Ma! No hands!”
Son: Dad, do you know the difference between a pack of cookies and a pack of elephants? Dad: No. Son: Then it’s a good thing Mum does the grocery shopping!
Jack: What did the mother broom say to the baby broom? Bill: What? Jack: It’s time to go to sweep!
"BARK!" Mother to Son: I’m warning you. If you fall out of that tree and break both your legs, don’t come running to me! A mother mouse and a baby mouse are walking along when suddenly a cat attacks them. The mother mouse shouts “BARK!” and the cat runs away. “See?” the mother mouse says to her baby. “Now do you see why it’s important to learn a foreign language?”
