The Thing Is... STORY Bree James

This month it’s Mother’s Day, the one day of year when Mum is showered with extra love from her children and a day off doing mum duties. Treated like a queen, ready for a day of relaxation, peace and quiet reflection on how awesome she is.

The thing is, I actually think this is one of the funniest days of the year for most mothers. Whether you are a single mum, or you have a partner, in my experience, this day turns into a “I either have to laugh or I will cry” day. The morning often starts lovely, with hugs and sloppy kisses, breakfast cooked in bed, delivered with a knee to the vagina by one of your overly zealous children. You’re then watched like a hawk by your children as you eat yummy, cold breakfast whilst they wait for the “MMMMM this is DELICIOUS!” Then the kids start to get upset because they want to eat breakfast in bed too. Then someone touches someone’s foot and all hell breaks loose, your breakfast or tea gets spilt everywhere, so you then have to eat breakfast at the dinner table. Then it’s present time! Your gifts are nearly dropped as they are brought to you. You watch in fear that it’s something glass, and that their little hearts are going to be broken into a million pieces, like the gift, if they drop it. Phew, it makes it to you and you open it, “Oh yay!” I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but sometimes you get a nice thoughtful gift, sometimes it is just dumb crap, like a generic beauty pack that your partner grabbed at 5pm the day before because they couldn’t think of anything else, so it sits in the bathroom cupboard with last years one. Never the less, YAY! Then one child will start crying because it’s not their birthday and they aren’t getting any presents today and all hell breaks loose again. As the Queen you are, you then think, ok I am going to go and have a nice long hot shower whilst today’s plans are

executed. You sneak off to have some “peace”, sit on the loo and at least one family member will “pop in” to ask a pointless question. You deflect to another adult in the house and head for the shower thinking how good it is to deflect, you hop in and just as the water hits your hair, they are back with the biggest crisis that only mummy can solve. You take a deep breath and give up that hair mask and shaving all your bits that needed to be done two weeks ago, and give yourself an uppercut for thinking you could have a peaceful shower whilst they are awake. You compromise with yourself and commit to do it once they go to bed. You have a quick shower, put on a robe and ask, “What are we doing today, so I can dress for it?” The reply? “Well…. What do you want to do today? We thought you could choose.” You internally scream as you know all the fancy places are booked out in advance, then the kids start arguing putting forth what they want to do, so you end up with your hairy legs in long pants in the local food court so everyone can eat the lunch they want. Finally, there is five minutes of peace and you take a moment to look at your little humans and reflect on how being a mum is the best job in the world. And even though it is 24/7 365 days a year of non-stop doing, thinking and being, you wouldn’t change it for the world. Happy Mothers Day ladies, whatever your day ends up like, just make sure you take five minutes to celebrate you.

Going it Alone

Mum Power!

Being a mum is by far the most rewarding and challenging role you will ever take on. It is one that requires you to put someone else before you, to keep your head up, even when your motivation is down, and to unleash superhero powers that you didn’t even know you had (like being able to chase away monsters under the bed and heal a wound with a simple kiss). Like all mums out there, our featured Cairns mums go above and beyond every single day. Not only are they raising children but they’re doing it on their own, and proving being a great mum is not dependant on relationship status.

You may recognise Jojo’s voice as part of the TripleM Breakfast Show brekkie team. However, in addition to making us smile in the morning, Jojo is also an esteemed public speaker and M/C for Lorna Jane and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a promoter for Southern Cross Austerero. Jojo’s four-year-old daughter, Mia, sees her dad once a week and for the rest of the time, she lives in Trinity Beach with her mum. Jojo’s partner works FIFO, so for the most part, she is raising Mia on her own, her own way! What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns? The community aspect. It’s like one big family. Everywhere we go we will see a friendly face of someone I’ve known for 20 years. Everyone looks out for everyone else. What’s your favourite thing to do with your daughter? To go on little adventures. Exploring creeks and waterfalls. Heading on walks to the beach. And we love to cook together. Who is the person you look up to the most? I find inspiration from many different people in my life, and it changes on a daily basis. Strong women in my life like my best friend Gina, and also my mum. Mum never ceases to amaze me with how much she does for everyone.

FEATURE

Adriana Braid Owner The Painting Party

pakmag

Eva Grabner Managing Director, Elite Executive

In 2016 Adriana Braid gave up her career in the corporate world to pursue her passion – painting and creating. She started The Painting Party, an art studio predominately for adults but with kids’ sessions as well, which opened in February 2017.

Eva is the mum behind Cairns’ leading recruitment consulting firm, Elite Executive, a business she started five years ago. In addition to helping her clients with the recruitment process, she is also a mum to three-yearold Kai. Eva and Kai live in the Northern Beaches.

The Painting Party is something truly unique to Cairns. Not only does it provide people with the chance to learn or develop their painting skills, but it also allows them to break away from the daily pressures in a relaxed environment.

What is your favourite thing to do with your family?

In a few short months, Adriana has seen countless customers walk away from a session feeling relaxed and proud of what they have achieved. In addition to being a business owner, Adriana is also single mum to two children, Declan, 15 and Molly, 14. What is your favourite thing to do with the kids? We like being at home together. I love watching them feel relaxed in our backyard, listening to music with friends, playing in the pool and laughing. What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns? First, the mountains – the security of the mountains is definitely what has kept me here for 25 years. Plus, the community – we have a very giving and positive community here in Cairns. Are there any exciting plans for the future? We are going to do two painting parties for the volunteers from Reap this month. We are also going to Chillagoe for an off-sight painting party and looking to do more mobile parties in the future. I am also hoping to develop a program called The Retired and Wise, which will allow the older generation to connect through painting. To find out more about The Painting Party, visit www.paintingparty.com.au

We love swimming, cycling and exploring but we also really love the beach and the ocean. We love going on weekends away to various places like Mission Beach, the Daintree, Port Douglas and the Tablelands. What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns? There is so much to do here, we are never bored. Every weekend we try and do something new, especially now that my son is getting bigger and it’s easier to go places! It’s the most amazing place to raise a family. Tell us a little about Elite Executive: At Elite Executive, we find and place leaders within organisations across Australia and internationally. We have a huge emphasis on customer satisfaction when it comes to fulfilling our clients’ needs. As we are a niche in the recruitment field focusing on executives, it’s important our effort is on market searching for quality candidates who will truly benefit our clients, stay long term and really make an impact. Who is the person you look up to the most? In a business sense, I look up to Richard Branson. He is an innovator and extremely smart businessman who not only puts his staff first but he has fun every day in his job. To me that is so important, to love what you do. Personally, it would have to be my Gran who passed away nearly 16 years ago. She taught me grace, patience and persistence and to always believe in myself. I miss her every day.

PARENTING

pakmag

Ba n i s h i n g B e h av i o u r STORY Jenna Galley

Children misbehave for a number of different reasons. In some instances, there may be an underlying behavioural disorder at play. In other instances, the child may be acting out because he or she has not been taught otherwise. Although all parents can expect to deal with a few tantrums during their parenting journey, is it possible to prevent poor behaviour from becoming part of a child’s regular routine? Many parenting experts agree that, yes, it is possible to banish bad behaviour in children. It all comes down to knowing the best discipline strategies to resolve these behaviours before they become bigger problems.

When a child’s poor behaviour is ignored, Dr. Sears believes that the child learns that this behaviour does not gain attention and eventually he will stop it on his own.

Shaping Children’s Behaviour

Children learn by example. So lead by example. You cannot expect your child to watch you behave poorly (and get positive results) and not expect to do the same.

Parenting expert Dr. Sears offers several approaches to help parents handle poor behaviour in children in a gentle and non-threatening way. All strategies can be incorporated into your daily routine to help squash poor behaviour. 1. Practice praise, not criticism Rather than focus on the poor behaviour, focus on the positive behaviour. Dr. Sears also suggests that you praise the behaviour, not the person. Praise, however, is different to reward. Praise is a simple acknowledgment or a compliment so your child sees that you are paying attention. Dr. Sears recommends keeping track of how many times you praise your child versus how many times you criticise your child in a 24-hour period. If the criticism is higher than the praise, then you may be shaping your child in the wrong direction.

3. Check your own behaviour

4. Consider a behaviour chart Similar to a chore chart, a behaviour chart tracks the behaviour of everyone in the family. Good behaviour gets a sticker. Poor behaviour does not. 5. Teach consequence A child needs to understand that poor behaviour will lead to a poor result. This is an invaluable lesson in childhood and adulthood. For example, teach your child that if he doesn’t do something, then he loses out. If he doesn’t pick up his toys, don’t do it for him. Bin them (or hide them until he learns that this isn’t how things work). 6. Negotiate smart

2. Choose to ignore

While negotiating with your child may seem like you are letting them win, this isn’t the case, Dr. Sears explains.

Pick your battles, Dr. Sears suggests. Otherwise you will end up driving yourself crazy. Dr. Sears admits that in his household he ignores “smallies” which are behaviours that are annoying but do not cause harm to humans, animals or property.

“Bargaining with your child doesn’t compromise your authority; it strengthens it. Children respect parents who are willing to listen to them. Children must accept your authority— that’s not negotiable; but that doesn’t mean you can’t listen to their side of things.”

www.pakmag.com.au MAY 2017

13

Negotiating means having a two-way conversation with your child. Rather than it being “my way or the highway” (which works in some instances), children need to feel that their opinions matter and that they are respected too.

• Withdraw privileges

7. Withdraw privileges

Children often pick up a potty mouth from the people around them. Yes, parents swear. And yes, parents should be allowed to swear because we are adults. But kids don’t always understand this. The best way to stop swearing and potty mouth problems? Make sure the entire household stops.

Sometimes communication works. Other times, the only way to get your child to learn from his poor behaviour is to withdraw privileges. You swear, no iPad. You hit your sister, no scooter. These rules need to be established and understood before you can put them into action (see below). And they need to be followed through on, which means you cannot weaken, no matter what. 8. Hold regular family meetings Family meetings allow you to set up house rules. Make family meetings part of your regular routine where you look at different problems as a team and come up with solutions on how to prevent poor behaviours together.

Understanding Bad Behaviour Bad behaviour one: Lying Children often tell tales to gain attention. In other instances, they may tell a lie to avoid getting into trouble. Lying can easily turn into a bad habit for your child, especially if he is not taught that lying is not acceptable.

Bad behaviour three: Swearing

Discipline methods to consider • Chore charts (or swear jars) • Lead by example • Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings Bad behaviour four: Aggression Violence and aggression is a hard one to handle because often the reason for this behaviour comes down to emotions, something that can be difficult for children to control. However, aggression needs to be stopped before it becomes a bigger problem. Discipline methods to consider • Lead by example

Even if there is no malice behind the lie, it is important that you respond to an ‘over-exaggeration’ calmly and directly. Talk to your child one on one (and never in front of a crowd which could cause embarrassment) about why lying is wrong and why we don’t lie.

• Teach consequence

Discipline methods to consider:

Bad behaviour five: Tantrums

• Praise (when he tells the truth)

Tantrums are common in toddlers and pre-schoolers and are usually due to a child not being able to communicate what he or she wants. Sometimes children have tantrums to get attention or to try and get what they want.

• Teach consequence (what harm can lying cause?) • Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings Bad behaviour two: Defiance When a toddler mutters, “no” for the first time, it’s cute. But after hearing your child say, “no” for the 8 gazillionth time, it loses its cuteness and becomes a problem. Defiance refers to when a child purposely refuses to follow your instructions or rules. It puts you in an uncomfortable position as it tests your limits and your authority. It can also be embarrassing when the defiance occurs in public. All children are going to push the boundaries but it is important that parents put a stop to defiance as quickly as possible. At the end of the day, you are the boss. Discipline methods to consider: • Praise (when direction is followed) • Negotiation • Chore charts

14

• Communication during family meetings

MAY 2017 www.pakmag.com.au

• Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings • If the aggression continues, seek professional assistance

As a child gets older tantrums may not be as obvious. Rather than kicking, screaming and lying on the floor at Coles, older children may sulk, stomp their feet or slam doors. Discipline methods to consider: • Negotiate • Choose to ignore • Withdraw privileges • Communicate during family meetings Whatever your tact, and whatever your child’s personality, dealing with bad behaviour is inevitable as parents. Each child is different and their responses to certain discipline methods will be different too. The underlying theme and most important thing to think about when dealing with this behaviour is finding what works for you, and being consistent. Good luck, you may need it!

Making Mates STORY Jenna Galley Making friends when you are an adult is actually a lot harder than when you were a child. Whether you’ve just moved here, you’ve just had a baby or you are simply looking to expand your social circle, here’s what you need to know about making friends with other parents.

Know where to go Cairns is bustling with parks, playgrounds and indoor play facilities perfect for little ones of all ages. Even if you don’t know anyone, there is no harm in striking up a conversation with another mum or dad who is also supervising their kids at the same playground as you. The libraries often offer free child and parent programs that will give you another opportunity to meet other parents in your community. Find your neighbourhood park Have a stroll around the block and check out the parks in your area. Getting out of the house in the afternoons and going to a park is a great way to wind down and meet parents in your neighbourhood. Other children and parents at the park most likely also live close by and most likely frequent the park often. After initiating conversation, you could try asking if they want to meet again another day at the same time. If you are going to a park, you may want to bring along a bag of extra toys in case other kids are there. Often children will gravitate towards toys and this is a great way to help your little one socialise and also initiate conversation with the parents.

For babies, check out swimming lessons, baby massage courses or Gymbaroo. For toddlers, enrol in a mummy (or daddy) n’ me dance program, Kindergym or Tiny Tots, all of which will give you the chance to meet other parents who are participating in the program with their kids. The good thing about these programs is that they tend to go for a full term, which means you have 10-12 weeks to get to know the parents and children in the program. Check out our What’s On Guide and Regular Events Guide for a list of some of the programs and times. Join a club Finding other like-minded adults doesn’t have to be confined to child-related activities. Joining a club such as netball, soccer, volleyball or even non-sporting clubs such as drama is a great way to meet other adults and get yourself a new hobby at the same time. Cairns has a multitude of different clubs that you can join, so there really is something for everyone. Speak up Attending your first playgroup, mother’s group or club meeting can feel like you have returned to your first day of high school all over again.

Enrol in a program

Regardless of where you are going, speak up. Don’t be afraid to initiate a conversation, to offer your phone number or to ask if they would like to get together another time.

Attending a regular class every week is a great social outing to add to your routine. There are drop-in and scheduled programs for children of all ages, starting as young as infants.

Yes, your adult conversation skills may be a little rusty if communicating with your kids is your only contact with other humans, but you will most likely find that the other parents are in the exact same situation.

MONKEY BUSINESS WITH FRANK WOODLEY STORY Rose Foster

With the Cairns Children’s Festival on 21st May, PakMag sat down to chat with comedian, Frank Woodley, star of the hilarious Noodlenut show, about family, career and his newest show.

You’re one of seven children, how was it growing up with such a big family? It taught me humility because I think I was called my own name about four times in my entire youth. How did you get in to comedy? I started off in a trio called “Found Objects” with Colin Lane and a chap called Scott Casley. We did lots of shows in pubs and comedy clubs and then after about five years Scott left the group, and it was just me and Colin left. Then after 20 years Colin left and now I'm solo. So, if this pattern continues, quite soon I'm gonna leave as well and the audience will come and just laugh for an hour looking at an empty stage. What tips would you give any budding comics to get into the industry? Trust your instincts. Get on stage and perform as much as you possibly can in front of audiences because in comedy, it’s audiences that teach you how to do it. You do an apprenticeship and your boss is the audience. From where do you draw inspiration for your shows? Anything and everything. I would say about 80 per cent of the material in my shows is based on a personal experience or something that happened to a friend of mine. In my latest adult stand-up show, there's a story I tell about having my car stolen and then later on hitchhiking and being picked up by my own stolen car and the thief saying “What am I gonna do?" and me giving them a lift home. That really happened to a friend of mine and I'm sure nobody in the audience believes a word of it.

I tell a story about overcoming some bullies at school. And I also talk about a nightmare experience at primary school when “Show and Tell” went horribly wrong. The other half of the show is an epic story about a cheeky monkey called Noodlenut who uses his genius for problem solving to overcome a giant python that is bullying all the jungle animals. As I tell that story I project illustrations that I did for the show. How different is it to perform for children instead of just adults? I was worried about that before the show but I soon discovered that it's exactly the same. As long as the material relates to the kids I just perform in exactly the same way. In fact, there’s one bit where I try to put a slippery mango pip into a rubbish bin and it keeps shooting out of my hand. I tried this routine for adults and it fell a bit flat but I always thought it was really funny so I tried again in the kids show and they love it, so I feel a bit like, “Finally somebody who understands me, you lot are my people!" The show has been travelling around the country, do you enjoy touring? I love performing for audiences and I'm always grateful that people come out to see my shows and it's always interesting to meet people and see new places. However, I am a family man and being away from the family isn't always easy. I tried to organise for people all over Australia to fly to my home where I would perform for them but apparently, they weren't that keen.

Tell us about your new show, Noodlenut.

Themusic.com.au recently published a blog ‘contestants who would make ‘I’m a Celeb’ more watchable, and named you as one of their top picks. Would you ever go on a reality show?

It's my first live show specifically for kids and I'm loving doing it. Half of it is stand up for the kids, for example,

I appeared on the pilot of “So you think you can survive a panther attack" and that sort of put me off the idea.

HEALTH

pakmag

+ HEALTH Allergy Awareness STORY Rose Foster In Australia, nearly 20 per cent of the population suffer from allergies to some degree. That’s 4.1 million people. Since there are many different categories of allergies and many different reactions, the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia group seeks to bring understanding and awareness to all of these, kicking off with Food Allergy Awareness week from 14-20 May 2017.

Food Allergy Awareness

What to Do in an Emergency

In Australia, one in ten babies will develop a food allergy of some kind. This is a statistic that is increasing, making Australia a country with one of the highest instances of food allergies in the world. It is therefore more important than ever to make sure we’re all aware of food allergies, what a reaction looks like and how we can assist if we do see an emergency situation.

• Call 000 immediately.

Other Allergies Other allergies which can cause allergic reactions include insect stings, hay fever, or pet allergies. The reaction to these can vary from a slight itch and sneezing to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction which is potentially life threatening as it usually leads to the victim not being able to breathe. Signs of Anaphylaxis Signs of anaphylaxis vary from person to person but will generally include difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, tightness of the throat, dizziness. In some cases, this will also include swelling to the face, lips or eyes.

• Check to see if they have an epinephrine auto injector (or “epi pen”). Many people with severe food allergies will carry an epi pen but it is important not to inject someone suffering anaphylaxis if the epi pen does not belong to them – you may cause more harm than good. • Try to keep the person calm, and lie them on their back and raise their feet. • Loosen their clothing to make breathing easier. • Be sure to turn them on their side if they are vomiting. Asthma Asthma is sometimes grouped under the ‘allergy’ umbrella, as there are certain types of asthma which are triggered by allergic reactions (eg. pollen, mould, etc.). In the event of an asthma attack, keep the person calm, encourage them to breathe slowly and use their inhaler every 30-60 seconds (max. 10 puffs). If this becomes more serious or does not subside after using the inhaler, call 000 and continue to use the inhaler every 30-60 seconds.

Your Cleaning Regime and Allergies Do you know where it all began for ENJO Australia? For those of you who aren’t in the know, Barb de Corti, CEO and Founder of ENJO Australia, discovered ENJO when her son, Mark, was diagnosed with asthma at just three years of age. As there is no cure for Asthma, uncovering what triggered Mark’s asthma was key to controlling his symptoms. With a trial and error approach, Barb learnt that dust and cleaning chemicals were major triggers to her son’s asthma attacks, and a trip to Austria is when Barb discovered ENJO. Using fibre technology and water, ENJO was a healthier way to clean that reduced Mark’s asthma symptoms, so Barb brought ENJO to Australia in 1994, and hasn’t looked back! ENJO is now used in over 1 million households Australia wide, and has partnered with Asthma Australia, raising awareness and funding research to find a cure. If you are inspired by a healthier way of living and would like to see ENJO in action, contact Anne Naylor, your local ENJOpreneur 0438 362 561.

+ HEALTH Women’s Health: The Truth STORY Dr Liz Chappel FRACGP MBBS BSc Apple Tree medical Life today has many demands on us, and women are especially adept at putting themselves last when it comes to their health needs. This is not ideal. Astonishingly, 26 per cent of women have admitted they have delayed going to the doctor, mainly due to lack of time, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study. This is particularly damaging since many serious diseases and illnesses that affect women have the best results when treated early. Women are 50 per cent more likely than men to suffer from depression. Cervical cancer and breast cancer can be symptomless in early stages. Approximately 10 per cent of women in Australia suffer with endometriosis with many being undiagnosed. These stats may be shocking, but it’s even more shocking when put into context; women still avoid the doctors as they are too busy, don’t consider themselves ill or they just deal with their symptoms as a part of their life. And it shouldn’t be that way. As a GP, I encourage women to have a check-up, at least annually. The examinations and investigations that I do vary considerably depending on life circumstances and age. If a problem is detected early it is generally much easier to manage and treat. There are some government screening programs in place that women should definitely take advantage of, designed to detect early/pre-cancerous conditions. These include: • The Cervical Cancer Screening Programme. This is changing in December 2017 to an HPV test from the age of 25 and performed every 5 years. • Breast Screening. This can be arranged through Breast Screen (call 1800 354 209) from ages 50-74 years (although you can start screening from 40 ) • Bowel screen. The Government send out kits to screen for bowel cancer from the age of 50.

Spinal Health STORY Rose Foster With one in six Australians reporting back problems in 2015 it is easy to understand why the Chiropractor’s Association of Australia (CAA) are passionate about raising awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy back during the annual Spinal Health Week. From 25th – 31st May spinal health week seeks to inform and educate about spinal health and how poor posture can seriously affect your life. It is estimated that a whopping 90 per cent of people have poor posture so it’s not surprising that 70 to 90 per cent of the population will report a back problem in some capacity, at some point during their lives. Poor posture can cause the spine to move from its natural alignment and lead to a range of issues such as back pain, joint and muscle problems and even headaches and tiredness. Encouraging yourself, and your children to practice good posture is the first step in ensuring long term spinal health. During Spinal Health Week, the CAA encourages visiting a chiropractor to see how they can help you get “back your inner athlete”! So, book in at your local chiropractor this month and find out what your posture means for your overall health.

Birthing Options STORY Jenna Galley Giving birth is one of the most incredible (and most likely difficult) things you will ever do. You want to make sure you are comfortable, calm and content in your environment. In Cairns and surrounds, mothers have a number of choices when it comes to giving birth.

Public Hospital 73 per cent of mothers who gave birth in an Australian hospital in 2014 opted for a public hospital. The public system has everything you need to ensure a positive delivery experience, including highly qualified midwives, doctors, specialists and anaesthesiologists, if required. Public hospitals also feature individual labour wards with toilet and shower facilities, a private bathtub if you choose a water birth and additional facilities to help with your labour experience. Giving birth and post-delivery recovery at a public hospital is free to all Medicare card holders.

Private Hospital 27 per cent of mothers who gave birth in an Australian hospital in 2014 opted to go through the private healthcare system. Although it is available to everyone, there are large rebates available for those with a private healthcare provider, such as Medibank, AHM or BUPA. However, even with private healthcare, there will most likely be some out-ofpocket expenses to consider. Cairns Private Hospital comes with private recovery rooms, special meal plans and your choice of obstetrician to deliver your baby.

Doula and Home Birth Services During labour, you are going to need support. Many mums will rely on a doula to provide them with one-on-one guidance. A doula can join you in the private or public hospital or you may wish to give birth at home with the support of a doula by your side.

Only 0.3 per cent of births in Australia are home births. However, this number is most likely going to increase as more mums become aware of this option. Home births offer a personalised experience in the comfort of your own home; however, the main downfall is that you don’t have immediate access to medical staff and support.

Pre-natal and Post-natal Care In the lead up to the birth, you will be required to attend regular pre-natal appointments, which can also be done through the private healthcare system or public system. Through the private system you can choose which obstetrician to see for all of your appointments (and for your post-delivery check). Most obstetricians also offer a chance for a glimpse at your bub through an ultrasound every appointment. Through the public healthcare system you will see whichever midwife is on duty on the day of your appointment with one 20 week ultrasound scheduled (or more if your pregnancy is ‘high-risk’). After you have had bub, the public healthcare system offers a unique midwife service in which a midwife will come to you, check that you and bub are settling in and offer support on sleeping, breastfeeding and more.

One Last Thing… When it comes to childbirth, things don’t always go to plan. You may require medical care and need to go to hospital even though you wanted a home birth. You may end up delivering bub at home before making it to the hospital. When it comes to labour, anything can happen. So prepare as best you can and brace yourself for the wonderfully unpredictable experience of child birth.

Is there such a thing as too much praise?

Spinal Health in Babies

STORY Goodstart Early Learning national manager professional practice Greg Antcliff

May’s Spinal Health Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness of spinal health and good posture in adults, but it’s also important to remember that developing a healthy spine from a young age is extremely important for spinal health into adulthood.

For parents, most of us will say “well done” without even thinking about it. But research shows general praise like this may not help our children learn about what it is we want to encourage. Being specific is the key to promoting positive behaviour, self-efficacy and resilience in children. A key to giving praise is to understand the three types of praise – descriptive, praise for effort and persistence, and trait-based. Descriptive praise Descriptive praise involves making positive statements to someone about something they did. • “I like it when you …” • “Thank you for…” • “You’ve done a great job of…” Descriptive praise can make it more likely that a child will engage in positive behaviours and it can also strengthen the quality of their social interactions. Praise for effort and persistence Praising a child for effort and persistence can help children build a view of themselves as having malleable abilities that can be impacted by their effort and persistence. They are less likely to think their abilities are fixed and more willing to work harder to improve areas they can change. "I can see that you're finding it hard to solve the puzzle but you didn't give up and you solved it." Trait-based praise

STORY Rose Foster

Spinal Development When babies are born, although their vertebrae and spinal cord are present, there is some development needed to bring their spine into its ‘correct’ position. After birth, a baby’s spine resembles a ‘C’ shape, which begins to alter when bub begins to lift his head, as a secondary curve is formed in the neck. The final secondary curve, the lower back arch, is formed when a baby begins crawling. Knowing these developmental milestones is important for good spinal health, and giving your baby tummy time and ensuring you don’t place bub in carriers that restrict movement for long periods of time are essential. Problems Many baby car seats can be restrictive for baby’s spinal health development. Even bouncy seats, prams and swings can encourage baby to stay in a C position. Ensuring you have an ergonomic car seat and don’t keep baby in containers for long periods of time can go a long way to helping your baby develop good spinal health. Help at Home Tummy time is essential for babies to build up muscle strength around their spines, leading to reaching their spinal health milestones.

Trait-based praise such as “wow, clever boy!” can be useful in specific situations for a limited time or for the early stages of skill acquisition, such as an infant taking their first steps. However, trait-based praise can also be detrimental to children’s learning development and wellbeing.

It is also important that you don’t try to force milestones on your baby. Making him sit upright before he has the appropriate spinal strength means the entire weight of the head presses on the spine, which could lead to irreparable damage.

Tip! To set your child up for success in school and life, try to consciously build your skills in descriptive praise and praise for effort and persistence.

As your child gets older, it is important to encourage good spinal health by teaching your child not to slouch, providing a firm bed and ensuring a well-balanced diet.

SWIRLY PAPER FLOWERS

These cute curly flowers are super easy to create and are the perfect DIY gift that little ones will love making. What you’ll need: • Colourful paper • A pair of scissors • Craft glue

2

Step 1:

Step 2:

With your desired coloured paper, cut long vertical strips, keeping in mind these strips will make up your flowers, so make sure the strips are even to produce the best curls. Fold a thin crease (2cm) along one of the vertical edges.

Cut a fringe the strip of paper, making sure to leave the folded strip uncut and keep the fringes thin. Handy Hint: Fold the strip before cutting to save time.

3

4

5

Step 3:

Step 4:

Step 5:

To make the curls, roll each fringe all the way to the folded crease. This step does take time but is definitely worth the result.

To make the flowers stem, simply use a green sheet of paper and roll it diagonally from one end to the other, making sure the paper is pulled tight to create a strong structure. Secure the end with a touch of glue.

To complete the flower, apply glue to the underside of the flowers folded crease and wrap it gently around the stem, starting from the top and working down until the flowers end.

KID-MADE FLORAL PERFUME

Have the house smelling sweet and fresh with these KidMade Floral Perfumes. What you’ll need: • • • •

Filtered water Your desired flowers and herbs Spray bottles Essential oils

Step 1: Once you've decided what scent you would like to make, have your little one tear or cut (be mindful of sharp scissors) the herbs and flowers. Step 2: After all the flowers and herbs have been cut and arranged into their different scents, add them inside each bottle until it’s three quarters full. Step 3: Add six drops of essential oil to each bottle, then add in filtered water until each bottle is full. We suggest using a funnel to prevent any spillages. Place the lid on each bottle and shake well to distribute the essential oil. Add a handmade Mother’s Day gift tag, with a sweet message on the back for each perfume bottle. Handy Hint: As these perfumes are made from fresh herbs and flowers, the scent will only last a couple of days. This Mother’s Day craft is a sweet and educational idea for the kids to enjoy while creating a unique gift for their loved one. Thanks to www.hellowonderful.co

Local Gift Guide • FOR •

Mother’s Day

It’s time to show mum just how much she means to you with a gift that comes from the heart. Have a look at PakMag’s local gift guide to make her Mother’s Day the best one yet. This year we’ve uncovered our favourite places to eat, stay, play and shop for mum. Great Getaway Ideas Hey dads and kids…want to know what mums really want this Mother’s Day? Let me, let you in on a little secret. Mums want to spend the day with you. That’s right. Sure, flowers, chocolate and handmade cards are great, but what we really want is to enjoy quality family time without any whinging or washing up to do. So, how can you make this happen? How about by giving mum a weekend away? With or without the kids, here are our top picks for Cairns and the surrounds: Pullman Hotels and Vie Spa Give mum a night away from all responsibility with a voucher to the Pullman Reef Casino or Pullman Cairns International. There are great specials for locals who want to eat, stay and play in the heart of the city. Pullman International is also home to the indulgent Vie Spa, a relaxing oasis where guests can enjoy replenishing spa treatments, massages and therapies. There are a number of different gift voucher options for families on all budgets. Paradise Palms Resort Whether mum loves golf or not, one of our favourite local

destinations for a weekend away is Paradise Palms, located just before Palm Cove. Not only do they have great family specials, but they also have mini golf, jumping castles, swimming pools and playgrounds galore. Oaks Lagoon If you’re looking for a Port Douglas escape, you can’t go past the Oaks Lagoon, which is one of the only hotels in Port Douglas that offers private plunge rooms and swim-up pool rooms. The rooms are self-contained, clean and perfectly suited for families. QT Resort Another family-friendly Port Douglas hot spot is the QT Resort, which provides you with a five-star hotel experience for a fraction of the five-star price. Dining Out (and dining in) Options Another thing that all mums would love on Mother’s Day? A day off from kitchen duties. Whether this means the kids are in charge of the cooking (and the cleaning) or whether you treat Mum to a meal out, we’ve selected our must-visit venues in Cairns. Tamarind Restaurant If you haven’t tried Tamarind Restaurant yet, now’s the perfect chance! The food is not only delicious (and surprisingly affordable), but the atmosphere is amazing. Located on Wharf Street, the restaurant setting provides a relaxed vibe for Asian fusion fine dining and wine.

WHY BUY LOCAL? Any gift from the kiddies is special, especially when it comes from the heart. This is one of the many reasons why we at PakMag love to buy locally. When you buy local gifts, you are not only supporting the local artisans, but the community of Cairns as a whole. Plus, you can be sure that you are selecting a gift that is crafted with love and not mass produced. Local gifts tend to be built to last and have heart to them. You can choose a gift that is unique and personal. Plus, when you shop locally, you are also in for a more personal, less stressful shopping experience. Picking out a present for mum shouldn’t be a chore. When you shop locally, it becomes an adventure in selecting something that is special, meaningful and customised for that special person in your life – the one you call mum.

HEALTHY RECIPES

PUMPKIN & ROSEMARY CRACKERS

ROSEMARY & CHICKPEA CRUNCH

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups spelt flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 5 tbs nuttlex (dairy free butter) 1/2 tsp salt flakes 2/3 cup pumpkin puree (make sure it's not too runny) 1 tsp fresh rosemary (dried can be used here but fresh will provide max. flavour!)

1 tinned chickpeas - wash & pat dry with paper towel 1 tbsp olive oil (light) 1 1/2 tsp finely chopped fresh rosemary(I find fresh works better because there is lovely oils that come out on cutting however if adding dried rosemary do this after they are baked with a tiny bit of olive oil) 1 1/2 tsp ground sea salt flakes

HOW TO MAKE:

HOW TO MAKE:

Add spelt flour, baking powder, salt and nuttlex to food processor and process just until resembles crumbs. Add pumpkin puree and rosemary. Process on pulse and not too much – just until the mix comes together and is smooth. Be careful not to overmix as spelt still contains low gluten which forms what looks like elastic 'strands' (enables the product to hold together). Dough will appear sticky - that's ok.

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

Take it out of the processor and place in a bowl in the fridge for an hour or while you clean up - this will allow the dough to rest giving best results however if you’re impatient like we are you can go ahead and roll immediately.

Chickpeas are packed with protein so they are a fabulous alternative to chips when you are looking for that savoury hit!

Take 2 sheets of grease proof paper cut to the size of your tray. Divide you dough into 3 to 4 pieces. Place a piece between the grease proof paper and roll as THIN as possible. You can score or cut lines in our dough once rolled out or leave as a sheet and break into pieces when it has been baked. Repeat until all the dough has been rolled. Bake at 165°C for 20-30 mins. Turn your trays through out the process. The success of these delicious savoury bites is the baking time – getting them baked well before taking out of the oven will ensure they remain crisp in your airtight container. Keeps for up to a week.

Toss chickpeas with oil & salt - put on papered tray and put in the oven. Bake for 20 mins, turn and toss - return to oven. Bake for another 20 mins, turn and toss - return to oven. Take out and add rosemary - 5 mins back in the oven. Try not to eat them all at once!

IN CHILDREN STORY Rose Foster A Learning Disability is defined as ‘a condition giving rise to learning difficulties, especially when not associated with physical disability’. The description is broad and, although it goes someway to explaining the essence behind such disorders, it doesn’t really give a true sense of the spectrum of levels of severity which can be present. In reality, learning disabilities can range from difficulty learning to read and write to the more severe cases, where dependence on others for daily life is necessary.

Types of Learning Disabilities Disorders such as ADHD, Dyslexia and processing deficits are amongst the most common types of learning disabilities. Although they all come with different symptoms, they all impair learning for a child in some way or another. More severe learning disabilities need a higher level of care, with sufferers having little to no understanding of their surroundings or themselves. Assistance is often required with daily tasks that many of us take for granted like toileting, eating and bathing. Diagnosis

H E L P AT H O M E

Severe learning disabilities are typically diagnosed at birth or in very early childhood and generally, signs of developmental issues will be picked up by paediatricians.

Mild and moderate learning disabilities are sometimes harder to diagnose and are often not noticed until a child starts school. Looking out for potential signs of mild or moderate learning disabilities and paying attention to developmental milestones is important for early diagnosis. With early intervention, children often show improvements in their ability to learn and perform tasks they may have been struggling with. Potential signs to be aware of include: Preschool Age ●● Difficulty following directions/ learning routines ●● Difficulty controlling pencils or colouring within lines ●● Difficulty pronouncing words, learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes, etc

Age 5-9 Years ●● Slow to learn new skills ●● Difficulty telling time and

connecting letters and sounds

●● Difficulty with maths Age 10-13 Years ●● Difficulty reading and writing, especially reading aloud

●● Difficulty expressing thoughts aloud

●● Poor handwriting If you notice these things in your

child, seeing your GP is your first port of call. Early intervention can be the

key to ensuring children with learning disabilities have the best chance of

reaching developmental milestones.

Although some learning disabilities require professional assistance and care, there are some things that you can do to assist your child, if they have a mild to moderate learning disability. Communication with your child’s school is essential. Keep them in the loop, discuss learning options and styles with them and develop a plan to track your child’s milestones together. Remember: school success does not equate to life success. Children with learning difficulties may not achieve the best grades at school, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go on to achieve great things. Focus on the things your child likes and excels in and give them the opportunity to explore these things. Look after yourself too. When you’re focussed on ensuring your child’s needs are met, you can sometimes forget about yourself. Enlist the help of those around you to help.

I specialise in graphic design for photo albums, wedding albums and coffee table books. Why did you start “My Photo Album?” I still remember the moment I opened my wedding album, It felt so precious and so special. Is that me? I look so good! And when I flipped through the album, it seemed like I could feel and touch every single moment captured there. If this hadn’t planted the idea in my heart, the birth of my first baby in 2009 would be the inspiration for starting “My Photo Album.”

What makes “My Photo Album” special? My Photo Album offers upmarket flush mount photo album. I believe I am the only local supplier of flush mount photo albums. This is not something you can purchase from BigW or Harvey Norman photo centres. My connections to China enable me to offer very competitive prices without sacrificing any of the quality. BUSINESS Your Family’s Future: Wills and Estate Planning You may not think it, but if you have a car, house, a bank account or any possessions at all, you have an estate. And planning for what will happen to your estate once you’re gone is important.

Businesses Come Together for Entertainment & Sustainability The ECO Fiesta, an initiative of the Cairns Regional Council, is about “Celebrating Today and Inspiring Tomorrow”. This free event is a festival of fun, friendship and eco-inspiration on Sunday 28th May from 10am to 7pm at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. The celebration showcases our unique natural environment, tropical lifestyle and green economy.

It’s often something that is at the back of our minds, something we continuously put off, but making a will is possibly one of the most important things you can do in life. If you’ve not got one, you need to write one, now! Whether you’ve got a little or a lot, having a will is essential to ensuring your assets are distributed to the people you want them distributed to. Without a will, ambiguity over your intentions could mean your possessions end up in the ‘wrong’ hands. Often, this can cause fights amongst your family members, and at a time fraught with emotions, the last thing needed is tension. Having children is perhaps one of the most important reasons to write a will. Knowing that your children will be in the hands of a guardian of your choosing gives you peace of mind that they will be well looked after, loved and raised the way you would have wanted. It’s not something we like to think about, but tomorrow is not guaranteed. Putting off making a will could be tempting fate and may mean if the unexpected happens, you’re not prepared. Our tip? Check out your options for making a will now, there are plenty of will and Estate Planners in Cairns, many offering free consultations, so book in to see one today.

MAY 2017 www.pakmag.com.au

The celebrations include live entertainment, an ECO expo with over 100 stalls, local food, fashion and a dedicated children’s program with games and prizes. If you have a blank wall, try installing a set of shelves to display your unique collection of mugs or dishes while creating a decorative storage unit.

Bringing Nature Inside Make your kitchen feel fresh again by finally adding that potted herb garden you’ve been talking about. There are endless ways to display and decorate your kitchen with a herb garden, whether it be hanging from a wall structure or built into the kitchen bench, these gardens are the perfect accessory that are both practical and decorative.

Your kitchen, like a good outfit, needs the right accessories to complete its unique style. Try adding a pop of colour to your kitchen with bright stools or a decorative rug. Remember to use bright colours in your kitchen as dark shades are known to reduce natural light.

If you plan to paint your kitchen, stick to one or two colours; any more can make the space seem messy or cluttered. We suggest trying a pastel colour scheme, including shades of pink and blue to create a clean modern environment. Pair these colours with a white marble counter top and rose gold utensils to complete this unique look. Splashbacks A simple way to revamp your kitchen at an affordable price is the use of an effective splashback. If you already have an existing splashback, try adding a unique touch of colour by replacing it with decorative wallpaper with a clear glass panel in-front of it.

INTESTINAL WORMS STORY Jane Quinn Intestinal worms are common in pets like dogs and cats and can cause illness or even death. It is estimated that around 80 per cent of dogs and 75 per cent of cats carry intestinal worms, which is not surprising when you consider that some worms can produce up to 30,000 eggs per day and some eggs can survive in the environment for up to five years! Not only do worms make your best buddy sick, they represent a serious health risk for humans as well. Children especially are most at risk of infection as they are often closest to the family pet. The good news is, worms can be easily prevented by regularly worming your pet.

Types of worms found in dogs and cats Hookworm – The most dangerous of all intestinal worms, hookworms reach 5-19 cm in length and survive by burrowing in the pet’s intestinal lining and feeding on the blood and fluid released. Hookworms are zoonotic parasites that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Roundworm – The most common worm in dogs, roundworms can reach 9-19 cm in length and the adult worm produces a large number of eggs daily. These eggs can survive in the environment for many years. Roundworms are zoonotic parasites that can be passed from animals to humans. Children are especially at risk as they can become infected with roundworms by playing in dirt or sand that has been contaminated by dog or cat faeces. Whipworm – Adult whipworms attach to the intestinal lining of the large intestine where they live and feed on blood. On average, female whipworms produce over 2,000 eggs per day and these eggs can survive for up to five years in the environment.

Tapeworm – There are commonly two types of tapeworm that affect dogs and cats in Far North Queensland; Flea Tapeworm and Spirometra Tapeworm. The Flea Tapeworm grows up to 50 cm in length and it is the most common tapeworm infecting dogs. As the flea is an intermediate host, infection occurs when the pet is grooming and ingests a flea infected with tapeworm eggs. The Spirometra Tapeworm is more common in cats than dogs. Pets become infected by ingesting intermediate hosts such as lizards, mice/rats, frogs etc. Once infected with Spirometra, tapeworms ranging from 1.5m-5 metres in length can be found in the small intestine. Spirometra causes serious disease in frogs as well which means it is very important to treat your cats. Treating Spirometra requires a high dose of tapewormer – normal worm treatments just don’t work.

What can we do to prevent worm infestations? Dogs: • Worm puppies every two weeks until they are 12 weeks old, then monthly until six months of age.

• Worm dogs over six months of age every three months.

Cats • Worm kittens every two weeks until they are 12 weeks old, then monthly until six months of age. • Worm cats over six months of age every three months. Some worm tablets, worm pastes and spot-ons do not kill Spirometra tapeworm. Speak to our receptionists for more information on effective worming for your cat.

Other preventatives • Practice good hygiene when cleaning cat litter trays, making sure to clean trays every day. • Cover sand pits. • Pick up after your dog during walks. • Use flea prevention regularly to prevent flea tapeworm. • Always wash hands before eating, drinking, handling animals, etc. For further information on your pet’s worming needs, speak to our experienced staff at either of our clinics.
